so so so so so do hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was uh some more of those uh brooklyn home movies uh with all those kids um it's really great i think we figured that the last film was from like 64 65 because they actually went to the the world's fair new york world's fair um so these were probably close to that time um these all came from a collector uh who bought them i think either at an estate sale or on ebay and unfortunately we don't have any information about the family so that's one of the reasons we think that people should hold on to their home movies and keep them in the family uh so that you get context of who these people were are where they lived and all that stuff anyways um hot in north carolina right now it's hot so let's learn about it enjoy now [Music] playing with snow is lots of fun but if you want to keep your hands warm you have to wear mittens or gloves because the snow feels cold take some snow into your bare hand the longer you hold it the colder your fingers get why is it because cold flows from the snow to your hands or because heat passes from your hand to the snow as people believed long ago if heat is an invisible matter that flows in or out of materials we should be able to weigh it this is the weight of a tray an ice cube and a cover the pointer shows zero all materials have weight in melting i should be losing weight does it there all ice is gone will the pointer show any loss of weight no evidently heat is not a material what then is heat it is a form of energy that can be used to do work that is to move things heat energy runs this earth moving machine if heat is energy what is cold since heat is invisible let's try to answer this by using light when you remove light from the room you are not putting darkness into it you are taking away the light similarly when you cool anything you are not putting cold into it you are taking away its heat order to find out more about heat let's experiment again with ice like all other materials ice is thought by scientists to be made up of very tiny particles called molecules the molecules of all matter including ice are constantly moving the speed of molecules increases when heated so when we heat ice its molecules move faster and faster till those on the outside break away to form a liquid water if we continue heating the water its molecules will move even faster in boiling water molecules are rushing about so rapidly that some of them shoot off into the air as steam which is a gas this experiment has shown that the same material can be a solid such as ice a liquid such as water or a gas such as steam heat can also change the size of materials watch what happens when we heat the wire the weight sinks the wire must have become longer when it cools off the weight rises the wire becomes shorter again let's repeat the experiment using a different kind of apparatus we've seen that heat speeds up molecules when speeded up they push each other farther apart and cause the metal rod to take up more space this we call expansion as soon as we stop the heating molecules slow down come closer together in the material shrinks this we call contraction let's continue learning about heat in a blacksmith shop when one end of the metal bar is heated the molecules on the heated end move faster they in turn make their neighbors move faster in this way heat passes from one molecule directly to the next this we call conduction metals are good conductors of heat the smith can light a match on the end of the metal rod which is not in the fire because heat travels easily through metals in contrast some materials are poor conductors for example asbestos the smith can put his hand safely into the fire when it is protected with an asbestos glove wool clothes are also poor conductors of heat air is another poor conductor but air can be heated in another way called convection here you see heated air carrying the tin foil upward and below colder air is pulling the tin foil toward the flame this shows convection sometimes you see heated air above a lamp or above a radiator the heated air rises because cold air is heavier and pushes the warm air upward but the sun heats the earth by a third means called radiation heat can travel by conduction and convection only if there is some material present rays from the sun however must travel through empty space by this third way by radiation this is how it works the large bulb is giving out radiant energy air has been pumped out of the bulb even so when its radiant energy strikes the thermometer it is absorbed and changed into heat energy in this film we have explored several things about heat we learned that heat is a form of energy caused by the motion of molecules the faster molecules move the more heat energy there is in a material we saw that heat may change the state of materials from solids to liquids to gases that it causes materials to contract and to expand and that some materials are good conductors of heat and others are poor conductors next time you play in the snow think why we say that even snow and ice have some heat in them yeah sorry the stability of that image wasn't great uh basically the the film is shrunk a little bit and so it's having issues uh going through the gate and the software for the scanner is not really doing its job so that's annoying but it happens um i'm sure you got the message as the receiver we've communicated to you but in case we haven't uh here's this film communication the receiver [Music] hi there receiver back in a minute [Music] in communication the sender shares an experience with the receiver the receiver is the target for the sender's message now i'm the sender and this is my symbolic message the receiver will be poncho message sent message received that's communication man but let the sender be intercede that's communication man but must the sender be in shooting distance or shouting distance of the receiver watch i'm a receiver this telegram is a message from a sender far removed in space [Music] i'm a receiver this is the message i'm receiving here is the sender pretty far removed in time even though he has a lot to say that we can benefit from he who hesitates is lost so without hesitation if communication is to take place a message must get from sender to receiver it's coming through i think i'm receiving the message a receiver can help the message get through or he can hinder it hello hello i've been cut off anyway if you're going to be a good receiver you ought to know some ways that a receiver can help or hinder the communication process let's begin by setting up a situation for communication why not imagine that the four of us are watching the film on television what film what kind of film what are we watching look [Music] that's communication man quick change channel not until we learn something about receivers for instance how some receivers avoid a message like you're avoiding the message on tv now yes i am avoiding the message i don't want to hear it in a figurative sense i've used my ear lids i'm not interested in what's being said so i'm shutting it out and now i'm shutting it off people often shut out messages that seem contrary to their beliefs and personal taste for instance here's a delicious pastry that'll tempt your palate these wonderful tasty chocolate-covered ants yes let me tell you about the high food value and nutritional benefits of ants as a steady supplement to your diet to begin i've stopped receiving skirts for men are the in things the most attractive patterns that men can wear i'm not receiving so you see a receiver who doesn't think you'll agree with the sender's message can block its transmission that's right i agree but there must be other reasons why a receiver wants to block a message indeed there are my friends let me demonstrate you ninnies you dumb bunnies you don't know anything you're poor excuses for human beings he's irritating i don't like him let's turn him off don't turn me off because you find me irritating and unpleasant you stupid idiots you bad looking petty good for nothing curse [Applause] he was irritating i didn't want to listen to him anymore he got on my nerves mine too it isn't much fun listening to someone who's irritating [Music] i mean it's not very pleasant listening to someone i mean you know if he's gonna be and if he's you know and all that hey [Music] well i guess a receiver can block a message if it's not very interesting you can save that again is that all is the program over not yet television can show us a lot about getting attention for instance don't anyone make a move i want your attention you got mine because you talked loud and clear you got mine because you look really impressive what did somebody say something shook why can't i get him to receive my message he seems unwilling to pay attention he seems to have other things on his mind that's such we television brain doctors know three television brain doctors know a receiver with other things on his mind won't pay attention for instance this receiver has a lot on his mind which explains why he wasn't receiving the message for another reason why messages are not received change channel i haven't known you very long i hope we'll be able to communicate i hope that you care about people like i do that you're considerate and mannerly gentle and quiet that you have a good sense of humor what i mean is i hope that we share the same values and attitudes tell me what do you think [Music] a communication failure perhaps because my values and attitudes as a receiver are so different from yours as sender i really got a point there i think it's all very honest to show you more about the role of the receiver in communication here's i heard a funny one on the way to the studio alpha maupin off of papa's happiness rapper frappe got parappa topper up and zappy bop it grab a bop it up and dup hot whooping how far are you dropping the doctor up and floppy robin bop [Music] if you didn't understand it the problem is that you as receivers weren't aware of the code that ida was using she's speaking english but using the syllable op before every vowel if the receiver can't decipher the code the receiver can't receive the message well sure but how does that apply to everyday situations this program is for the select intelligentsia who deem the issue of egregious conceptions maximally innervating it is for sesquipedalian untimorous poetic construction it is for etymologists and phonologists it will captivate the phonophile who seek zizzle people hey they've stopped receiving me what went wrong why did they stop receiving me the receivers didn't understand your code language you used perfectly good words for receivers like me or i'm light years beyond them in vocabulary [Music] and these receivers had a short attention span when you exceeded it they stopped receiving the receivers created their own communication breakdown they stopped being receivers [Applause] can we help them become better receivers maybe if we can get them to receive the message we're sending anyway we're going to do our dermis to try like this well receivers howdy do here's a message just for you when a standard trust get a message through you can do a lot that's wrong that's the message of a song you can help communication break down don't let it break down be new to you please help a message try to get through good receiver and you'll say we are getting all the messages that come our way but how can we become better receivers are there any methods or rules where can we turn for help friends tired of people telling you you're not a good receiver well your troubles are over because it's time for that's the better receiving on this program people learn to become better receivers they win lasting benefits because they really communicate with others our first guest is zoro williamson zora i'll give you a clue and you'll see if you can tell all those people out there how to be better receivers let's begin now i'm a sender are you listening to me are you receiving yes i am suppose i make a little change my words no have your feelings about me yes they have you're scary and upsetting but i'm bringing you an important message about communication can you keep your feelings about me from interfering with your reception and evaluation of my message i'll try i want to be a good receiver then you've received the message i was sending what message the first step towards better receiving be sensitive to the sender our next guest is pancho sakira panjo i have a written message for you great but before i give it to you will you try to understand it in terms of the center's values attitudes interests and motivations i sure will all right [Music] groobies is the breakfast cereal that's good for you is it do you believe that message well [Music] who's the sender suppose i were to tell you that the sender is a television personality that's good for you well maybe she's more interested in selling than telling the whole truth what if the sender is someone you know very well blue beads are good for you grandma she wouldn't try to kid me but i don't think she knows much about nutrition or about cereals sorry grandma but what if i let you know that the real sender is you want to eat something that's good for you take it from me bluebee's is the breakfast cereal that's good for you dr kowalski he's a trained professional he tries to help people and i believe him glubies are good for me and you've demonstrated the second step towards better receiving evaluate the message and the sender our third and final guest is ida clark ida received this message it was toasted brilliant ring gimbal in the waist what is it so far i'm confused oh minty worth a faro grove what's the boro glow and the mom wrapped up grapes well it's some sort of nonsense poem when i think about it it seems to set a mood are you trying to tell me something about poetry i'm confused confused but you've taken the third and final step to better receiving send feedback you did that as you told us your feelings about receiving with feedback every receiver is also a sender letting others know how messages are being received and so we have three steps to better receiving one audience we've sent it to the sender to evaluate the message and the sender three good receiving isn't easy it's a hard job that takes as much work as being a good sender but you can do it you'll be a good receiver when you [Applause] [Music] carefully check each message is it correct and true send out some feedback you're on the right track communication is great with your [Applause] i don't know what they're doing [Music] still chewing pizza crust um one second all right yeah that um that's amazing um last you know the one we showed yesterday the message both of those are just zany and they consistently are zany um i don't think they they they still get their point across while maintaining zaniness whereas uh other films like those centron punctuation films start off zany and then get amazingly dry so kudos to don klugman films for uh doing that uh let's learn about some vibrations vibrations a vibration is a motion that repeats itself over and over again whenever an action is repeated over and over again with a more or less regular rhythm you can be sure something is vibrating we can see things vibrating we can feel vibrations and we can hear vibrations [Music] every sound you hear is the result of something vibrating [Music] for every different kind of sound there is a different kind of vibration this is a tuning fork [Music] you can hear the tone because the fork is vibrating when you strike a tuning fork it vibrates the vibrating arms hit against the surrounding air particles these particles in turn hit against particles of air farther from the tuning fork when the movement in the air reaches your ear you hear sound so so now most of the air is gone and we hear nothing but if we let some air back in here's a vibration the action is repeated over and over again with a regular rhythm it is a vibration but you can't hear it why not [Music] and why can you hear this vibration well you can't hear the vibration of the swing because it's too slow it takes the swing a couple of seconds to make one vibration you can hear this vibration because it's much faster this string is vibrating at a frequency of 55 vibrations per second this sound has a higher frequency [Music] the higher the frequency of the vibration the higher the pitch here is a dog whistle that can produce over 20 000 vibrations a second if you blow it you can't hear the whistle the dog could hear the whistle even though we can't can you explain why all objects that vibrate have natural frequencies for example this swing always vibrates at the same frequency even if you make it swing in a bigger arc it still vibrates from one side to the other at practically the same frequency this smaller swing has a faster natural frequency of vibration [Music] this string vibrates at its natural frequency each time you pluck it this string has a higher natural frequency of vibration [Music] this tuning fork will vibrate at still another frequency that's strange where's the sound coming from [Music] what we have here are two tuning forks that have the same natural frequency of vibration when i strike this one it moves the surrounding particles of air these moving particles of air strike against this one adjust the right rhythm to start it vibrating too the vibrations of the first tuning fork made the second one vibrate also [Music] here's another example of the same sort of thing [Music] a guitar string will vibrate when i pluck it and here are three tuning forks that will vibrate at three different frequencies this tuning fork seems to make the same sound as the guitar string i plugged we say that it's in tune musically with that string that means they both vibrate at the same natural frequency now let's put a small slip of paper on each of the guitar strings [Music] we know this tuning fork is in tune with one of the guitar strings [Music] well you know what happened because they both vibrate at the same natural frequency the tuning fork started that particular string vibrating what about this fork it must be in tune with the string that started vibrating that means they both vibrate at the same natural frequency and what about this one none of the remaining slips of paper moved so this tuning fork must vibrate at a natural frequency different from any of these strings to make music musicians have to produce vibrations with their instruments one thing that's true about all vibrations is that you have to do something you have to use force to make an object vibrate watch so [Music] you strike the bars in the vibraphone [Music] you strike the piano keys and the hammers strike the strings you pluck the bass strings you beat the drums and strike the cymbals you make vibrations and you hear sound you have to use force to make an object vibrate to start a swing vibrating you have to use force too it takes a lot of force to push the swing up this high when you let go the swing will return to its natural position but you know the swing wouldn't really stop here moving objects always try to keep moving it's not going to stop here either there's a force pulling it back to center but again it goes too far two things are needed to make a vibration one is a force that pulls the vibrating object toward a center position the other is the natural tendency for a moving object to keep moving the only reason a vibration like this doesn't go on forever is that friction slows it down friction of the girl and her dress against the air the friction of the chain against the hooks eventually friction will slow down the vibration until the swing stops this ping-pong ball on the string will vibrate at a natural frequency we can start it vibrating by blowing on it if you blow in rhythm with this natural frequency of vibration the ball swings higher and higher here is a bridge vibrating [Music] it's vibrating because strong winds are pushing on it and it has started vibrating at its own natural frequency all bridges are designed to swing a little but this one got out of hand if you want to build a bridge that will stay up you have to take vibrations into account i was expecting some like more cool jazz music to play it out but that did not happen all right sweet okay so behind me i have on the sintel i have another film which i have not changed the title for and this is called safety on the job enjoy [Music] dear [Music] foreign [Music] coffee time [Music] [Music] the financial costs of industrial accidents have soared to staggering proportions in recent years over 23 billion dollars in lost wages over 11 billion in medical expenses another seven billion dollars in fire loss now these figures are astounding but they don't begin to express the pain and suffering of the accident victims or their families and friends why do people act unsafely after all nobody wants to get injured well there is no simple answer but there are five major reasons people have accidents they may be careless due to an i don't care attitude or they may be reckless by nature they may be physically exerting themselves or just plain tired or they may be under too much stress the point is a serious accident can happen to any one of us stress can affect anyone whose problems begin to take on proportions beyond their ability to control them and an accident on the job can start with stress at home [Music] what's the matter honey nothing you seem so depressed depressed yeah you bet i'm depressed look at all these bills you know we're two months behind now there's a baby on the way and the car's broken you know we're never gonna get out of debt we'll work it out bobby we'll find a way oh we'll work it out look you know what man i'm sick of you nagging me why don't you just get off my back [Music] hey yablonski watch what the hell you're doing there you want to cut your hand off yeah i'll watch what i'm doing right [Music] yeah you bet i'm depressed you seen all these bills [Music] you know we're never gonna get out of debt let's just get off my back [Music] personal and family problems are only two causes of stress others include overwork and the feeling of being overwhelmed by increased responsibility stress can also come from conflicts on the job and by job burnout whatever its source stress is one of the major causes of accidents in the workplace today whenever a person is unable to cope with his problems it affects his on-the-job performance and he or she becomes a very real safety hazard i'll take care of it tonight but stress is not the only cause of accidents hey hey chuck what about that radio you borrowed sorry bill i'll get it to you tomorrow next day the latest he said that last week [Music] hey chuck see ya terrific negligent is not paying attention to what you're doing often it's caused by over familiarity with the job or equipment the day-in day-out routine of doing the same task can cause carelessness [Music] huh even small acts of negligence brief moments of inattention can quickly become major problems but recklessness can be an even greater problem because it often affects not only your safety but the safety of other workers as well a reckless worker is a real danger to himself and to others his actions often cause considerable property damage as well get out of here ah a little turkey today aren't we you want touchy i'll show you a touchy hey hey hey calm down cowboy and we don't want anybody to get hurt do we reckless individuals give no thought at all to the consequences of what they do they seem unaware of what is right or wrong behavior in the workplace they may willfully ignore established rules and procedures deliberately disobeying them [Music] you know i've been on this job three months and that stuff still scares the pants off me yeah what have you been here three years you've been drinking it no seriously have you ever thought about what happens if you slip up that's just 3 000 degrees they say the metal is so hot that it goes clear through the muscles straight through the bone and out the other side you've got nothing to worry about why not no muscle get out hey aren't you going to put your jacket on yeah it's too hot in here already hey slick if it's not too inconvenient you want to put on your jacket and get over here aye sir [Music] while recklessness is obviously dangerous fatigue can sneak up on you fatigue is mental and physical exhaustion that affects your stamina and alertness it can be caused by too much overtime long hours working on a tedious project anything that wears you down and the easiest cause to ignore his simple lack of sleep so then he juggles the ball for about five yards runs into his own man and then he runs into the call post and they rule it completely yeah i should have seen that oh yeah how was the wedding hey they're gonna rerun the game great great pretzels what's your pretzels good here we are hey jake you're going to miss it twice yeah i know but i told my wife i'd be home around 12. besides i've got to get denver right here you mean you guys are gonna desert me that's growing boys need our sleep you know it's the younger generation coming to oshanski gives the signal and there's the kickoff see it work tomorrow bob yeah yeah okay yeah butlik takes it at the 5 he's to the 10. the 20 no the 30. it looks like he's gonna break this one all the way i can't believe it he did it again it's football i don't know how he does it's all he thinks about well well it isn't the party person refill oh hey keep it down can't you see he's trying to sleep that's what i like about you guys sympathy yeah well you better hurry up performance been in the works since 6 30. oh great yeah uh bob you want to move those pallets out of the red zone because they're blocking traffic hey wait a minute i thought the night crew was supposed to take care of that they were but they forget so you do it uh-huh are you gonna be okay i can handle it [Music] fatigue slows your reaction time and how fast you make decisions its most dangerous aspect is that you may not be aware you aren't functioning normally [Music] hey bob [Applause] fatigue builds up gradually but over exertion occurs when you try to do too much at one time both endurance and strength are impaired and a job you did easily five minutes ago may suddenly become more than you can handle hey look dad slow down you're making me tired just looking at you sorry can't hey would you like to be a little more specific hey look you've been running around all day like the maniac hey what gives daniel flaherty jr a baby yep you're gonna have a baby you got it why didn't you say something too busy working you're gonna kill yourself because you're having a baby kid's got to go to college i should have expected that look you know as well as i do when this job's through there's going to be some layoffs now you got seniority i got hired with that group last may anybody gets fired it's not going to be me hey dan let me give you a hand with that i can handle it ah come on dad i said i could [Music] an accident is usually caused by more than one of the factors we've talked about by removing one of the causes you may prevent an accident some of the things we've talked about you can control others you can't but you can greatly reduce your chances of having an accident if you're aware of them stress negligence recklessness over exertion fatigue we've identified all of them as major causes of industrial accidents what can we do to make ourselves safer perhaps first and foremost is to be able to recognize that you may be in a state of mind that would cause you to have an accident ah come on dan i can handle it [Music] today workers may take advantage of counseling programs that can help them work out their personal problems before they seriously affect job performance i am depressed look at all these bills you can't avoid being negligent by concentrating on what you're doing and the possible consequences of making a mistake if you feel there's a bit of recklessness in your personality you should be doubly cautious on the job think twice before you act [Music] learn to recognize the signs your body gives you when you're doing too much or are fatigued employers and supervisors need to be alert and sensitive to employee problems an open line of communication from both sides allows complaints and concerns to be aired freely this can go a long way toward eliminating the conflicts and tensions that contribute to stress and stress-related accidents stress negligence recklessness exertion and fatigue major contributors to work related accidents tens of thousands of people are killed or disabled each year through their own mistakes and every one of them thought it couldn't happen to them it's up to all of us in the workplace to identify these attitudes and behavior patterns and to deal with them before they appear as on-the-job accidents at stake is the health and welfare of millions of men and women in the workforce the person next to you maybe even yourself [Music] so [Music] i can check back here in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be mincemeat by now what have i told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well i told him not to touch anything all right i guess i wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know i used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger joe [Music] i was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my tool box and i'll take myself a look i climbed up on a dozier with my mechanics pride said you can keep it running friend while i poke around inside [Music] three finger joe although i learned a lesson i forgot it soon enough the knicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones i was tough till another morning i was grinding on some steel [Music] step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made [Music] just to save themselves a minute i've seen them lose at all i've watched them caught in trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blues [Music] [Applause] my [Music] shake hands [Music] [Music] move around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends i used to know compared to them i'm lucky to be just three finger joes [Music] [Laughter] so i like the synth keyboard was in both of these films um of course you know i love this shake hands with danger uh re-envisioning um but that last film uh was uh was pretty great because of that synth soundtrack it reminded me a lot of the uh straight to video horror movies from the 80s that i have seen many of um had that same type of build up and suspense and then the the gore uh so i apologize for the uh the fake blood um but yeah what a great film i'm happy to show that to you and i have some others uh someone mentioned maybe doing a work safety uh show i mean i have done that in the past and i've certainly shown work safety films throughout but that one might be something that um if we did an evening show um uh yeah maybe i don't know we'll think about it i've certainly done it before when i did live screenings so but thanks nathan for the coffee uh and red toe of course you can
