so so so so so do do do so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is our 80 geeks lunchtime streaming show we just watched some footage from the ranger uh lunar probes uh ranger seven eight and nine um and so this was i'm not sure if if they were shot like with film or if it was broadcast i didn't really do a lot of research but anyways so that sound is when um you run double perfect film through a sound head an optical sound head so it's like black like black white black white black white so it makes that sound i figured i would let you kind of hear that hope it didn't give you a headache uh anyways um let's see we're watching old 16 millimeter films and so let's watch this one called magazine [Music] model [Music] well if i'm not all full of thrills my name isn't jesse wilcox the nearer i get to my destination the weaker my knees get maybe i was miss atlantic city and maybe i did rape first in other beauty contests but after all i'm just another girl from wilkesboro and the competition around here looks mighty but i bet i can be a con overcover girl too at least i'm going after a model job with mr conover and then we'll see [Music] just look at the glamour maybe i'd better go right back home no i won't grit your teeth now jesse and chin up here goes gosh what beautiful girls later i learned their names and what a swell bunch to work with that's yoona shoop and this one's pony adams this third girl is lillian bro call and this is chilly williams well they can't shoot you for trying [Music] i hope mr conover won't be busy much longer watching this fifth avenue style show is getting me down it must take real training to learn all the angles around here but my mind's made up oh dear i hope my nose isn't shiny and i wish my shoes were [Music] all right jesse wilcox here you go i was having the nicest dream just then too i dreamt i was already a cover girl well no time to dream now i've got to pass inspection by mr conover's personnel director miss thorley the first step on the road to making my dream come true miss thorin knew i was a little nervous and is she a swell person where was i from how old was i 18. did i have any photographs of myself yes a snapshot taken by my boyfriend now in the service well miss thori looked at it but it didn't tell her a thing she sent me to a photographer that would know just what was needed after arranging my appointment miss thorley told me to come back as soon as my pictures were ready i crossed my fingers she hadn't said there was no hope [Music] and now back with a test shot and did that studio gang up on me no makeup no soft focus a hard background anything to bring out any defects and to emphasize the bone structure of my face but that's what mr conover wants from these test poses he builds glamour mr conover was to see them next i didn't say anything for once i was out of words [Music] but mr conover wasn't at all frightening after i told him my name jesse wilcox it was decided that if i didn't mind he thought that since i reminded him of a stick of candy he'd like to call me candy jones i thought that one look at those it would be curtains for little jesse that is i mean candy but mr conover looked pretty carefully at the prince and said they were not bad at all and i should meet the promotion department the first thing i had to do was walk for eleanor dakin and was i all wrong for one thing i was all tensed up you must learn how to relax gracefully goodness would i ever be able to do it like that and my little sports model i dote on sports clothes and i thought this was pretty snazzy i'd always use lipstick and of course like all girls the minute i saw a mirror i got mine out and began to straighten up my lips but it seems a brush is the only thing that will apply color evenly leaving a clear outline [Music] you'd certainly think a girl would know how to put on her own makeup by this time but there are ways and ways that is if you watch your face in the covers of america's leading magazines you've got to learn the most alluring [Music] methods changes in makeup combined with a proper hairdos can change your entire appearance you can appear sophisticated demure come hither or a dozen other things in my bedroom that night i practiced all the makeup technique that the promotion department had taught me so i'd be letter perfect getting an exact outline with a lip brush was very difficult at first [Music] after several tries i finally had an even outline then i started my eyebrows when i'd learned to pencil graceful curved lines i smoothed and blended them with a brush now i was using makeup with intelligence satisfied with my face i tried different hairdos at last i felt that i could face mr harry conover with far more assurance than that dreaded first time feeling pretty slick i was ready for my first job i thrilled as mr conover had me the final symbol of success the hat box that is the mark of a model in it you keep your accessories in any necessary costume changes [Music] i panicked for just a second as i started for my first modeling assignment but the right clothes makeup do a lot for a girl's morale i was told never to walk in high heels all day too much of that and tired lines show up in your face [Music] now i was really ready as i arrived at pagano studio [Music] well as you can see not all beach scenes are made up at the beach [Music] finally the camera angle and all the lights were set and with some last-minute instructions i was ready too sitting for one of america's most famous photographers at last [Music] that beach scene was only the beginning of a long series of modeling jobs hard work going from studio to studio changing costumes keeping makeup fresh holding poses under hot floodlights winter and summer any and every style from country clothes to city chic but i love it one day mr conover said now for your first magazine cover and the excitement of regular modeling i'd almost forgotten i wore the cutest little shishy dutch get up we worked for hours shooting several different poses [Music] and at last there i was on a cover there's what i'd really worked for mr conover was just as tickled as i was he and his staff deserve all the credit they'd taken an inexperienced girl who knew none of the tricks and made her into a cover girl i hope you like and i hope the folks back home like their new jessie oops i mean candy oh so it's pretty easy to uh go sleazy and dark with uh a film about modeling uh our brains just went to the 70s and all the cocaine and all the uh the uh casting couch and all that stuff anyways that's our brains um so i was pretty great yesterday someone reached out to me uh who had a bunch of old films in raleigh and they're moving and they wanted me to have them so i have them set up on the tele some of them set up on the telecity there's a bunch of them and these are movie trailers so i have not seen these um so i don't know what they are i'll be standing by in case they get somewhat adult in nature um but these are uh miscellaneous film trailers and this is a world premiere well not a world premiere and so these are also tv trailers so they're meant to be shown on television so they tend to be shorter they tend to be they shouldn't really get that adult um but um yeah so let's see what these are and hopefully the audio thing will work out that's what we're hoping for so here we go [Music] i'm david suskind and i'd like to tell you about a different kind of motion picture if you like the unusual and the uncompromising in drama then a raisin in the sun is your cup of tea the prize winning play now on the screen a raisin in the sun [Music] i'm david suskind here to tell you about a challenging new motion picture a raisin in the sun you remember the acclaim given to this award-winning play now it's on the screen the prize-winning play now on the screen a raisin in the sun the prize-winning play now on the screen a raisin in the sun [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] be rocket in flight history is being made on the blast off in the biggest comedy bonanza in years [Music] to these pages i confided the events of the great adventure that began with the breakthrough the road to rome way ahead twisting through hundreds of miles of hostile mountains where a thousand guns guarded every mile and a desperate enemy bet his life we couldn't pass here i met the men who took that bet and for a brief moment shared their risks their dreams their laughter the intimate moments when a fighting man tries to forget here too in the wake of conflict i found a romance that surmounted every danger a man with so little time a woman with so much love two people who dared to fulfill the longings of their hungry hearts who dared to defy every force that kept them from each other's arms i'm going to live forever because of you if not longer and as long as i live [Music] tell me i don't know what time of day it is okay but don't tell me about women you look into that girl's eyes and you see your sister your mother i looked i didn't see anybody i know you've been up in the hills too long boy you're losing your touch you hate men i hate whatever it is that's degraded every relationship between men and women to something worth three cigarettes and no more made love a dirty word what's marriage names you can find kids you can adopt troubles you got you're in the army now so who needs marriage you know what z [Music] see the eighth wonder of the cinema world the startling daring wonderama in color by tactical [Music] oops so i used to have a print of uh 5 000 fingers of dr t but uh it was part of a collection library collection and the person i got the films with i kind of let them pick whatever they wanted from the collection and that unfortunately was one of the things that they wanted it was pretty great that's a dr seuss film and it's ludicrous and hans conrad is so good in it big fan of his work uh what we got oh yeah so this has been we've been showing some uh inside out episodes and somebody did some research and found that one of these 70s kids show um things that were shown on pbs that kind of explores emotions actually was banned by wgbh boston public station because it was too intense for kids and i think i know what scene it is so this is in my memory um it's about a young girl coping with her grandmother's death it's pretty you know it's great but there is definitely a scene in there i'm like whoa okay all right so here it is in my memory [Music] so grandma lived with us since i was five in a way she was my best friend i don't have any brothers or sisters almost every day after school we played hearts the card game two weeks ago grandma had a stroke and was taken to the hospital today i made a painting for her to help her get better [Music] [Applause] [Music] dad why are you home sonic linda as soon as i got to the office this morning your mother called they called from the hospital and said that grandmother was very ill [Music] when we got there grandmother was dead grandmother had something called pneumonia pneumonia is when it gets harder and harder for you to breathe especially old people do you understand when can i give grandma this picture grandma's dead [Music] later our relatives started coming aunt sandy and uncle bob came first they brought aunt betty grandma's sister holly is my favorite cousin it's always fun to play with her [Music] what you do you try and get rid of the hearts and say i put down the five of hearts will you try and put down the lower hearts so i can i just brought him for some fresh coffee and i'd like you to have some you hardly had a thing at dinner please end of the day whoever has your most hearts coffee aunt betty are you all right aunt betty i must have been daydreaming it's your turn would you like some cards it's your turn what a beautiful mother we had ros you take and remember the days when i played soccer back in high school and she was so worried you know about me about my getting hurt and then i remember that one why don't we drive this piece here scotty bloody and she was standing there right in the front door now i wish i brought my monopoly that's a fun game hearts are really fun once you learn how to play them pretty good do you know that i actually why don't we play gym i was just a little tight i stood up at the top of the banisters looking through i wasn't supposed to be there and there was sand down on his knees what's a stroke my dad says it's like a heart attack accepting your brain grandma couldn't talk right what's a heart attack like i don't know one thing we can always remember about grandma when she was alive she was really alive [Music] g'day cookout buddy what happens when you die [Music] that night i played with my old lady dog i made believe she was grandma but i knew she wasn't really it's time for bed now i couldn't fall asleep i just couldn't i felt dizzy in my stomach and i thought i might get really sick [Music] i felt like grandma left me alone like she didn't want to be with me anymore i kept thinking about times i didn't do what grandma said then i heard mom and dad's voices in the hall [Music] i'm afraid if i try to talk to her now i might break down let me talk to her i think it will be easier for me no we both should together uh i want her to know why i feel this way she's confused should we talk to her now no she needs to rest now [Music] by the next day most of my cousins came from out of town get [Music] bye [Applause] [Music] i had a dog once and i was about 10 years old and we were just sort of playing around you know chasing each other and uh we sort of ran out in the street again i got this close to fall i'm playing my own game [Music] get up we all know you're faking come on hurry up hey linda are you okay you're gonna get it you're gonna get it fooled you didn't i okay uh will you help me get ready for lunch i've got peanut butter with jelly and peanut butter without you please grandma scott go play okay but where's grandma just before dark i talked with my parents upstairs why couldn't the doctors make grandma well linda death's a natural thing [Music] everything dies things are born grow up blossom grow old and die are you going to die someday but not for a long time grandma died because she was old she got weaker couldn't cook for us had to take medicines what happens when you die your body stops working you stop breathing your heart stops pumping you stop thinking where do you go somewhere we believe but we can't know for sure what we do know is that grandma will go on living in our memories and we'll never lose those linda tomorrow is grandmother's funeral would you like to come with us [Music] oh the funeral was early in the morning there were lots of people i didn't know i guess they were grandma's friends all the while i kept remembering times with grandma [Music] [Applause] yes the other side [Music] i [Music] [Music] my mercy almighty god we commend this thy servant in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life for we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved we have a building of god a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens fear not i am the first and the last of the lord i am he that liveth and was dead and behold i am alive forevermore thanks be unto god and this is your mother's grandmother grandma it's weird to think about people from before i was born [Music] that's when i was still young everybody has a time to live [Music] and love of god and of his son jesus christ our lord and the blessing of god almighty the father the son and the holy spirit be upon you and remain with you always amen please let me know if there's any way i can help [Music] that night i still
