so so so so so oh yeah i'm running a show over here i got caught all up and look you can see my nephew behind me um he's making coffee sorry everybody i'm skip alzheimer and normally uh this is the indy geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch a bunch of 16 millimeter films but uh every once in a while i get caught up in moving a hard drive from one computer to another and uh yeah sorry sorry about that i hope it wasn't a black screen too long normally i set a timer on my phone but um i was moving a hard drive so uh anyways that last film was a 60 millimeter silent film from the oregon archive i just talked with a guy who runs the oregon archive and um he is going to be uh coming down hopefully in august so maybe we'll do some shows uh with him he's a character um so uh somebody asked me in thomas asked me in the comments um have i ever discovered a film that was lost or didn't know existed and it kind of depends because i'm discovering films all the time and rediscovering them so they're not necessarily like important yeah you know it's kind of hard to just to really answer that question uh clearly um because i often rediscover films and then try to show and give a new life to the films um an example of that is this film called felicia which is a interview with a young african-american high school student who lives in the watts neighborhood in los angeles just months before the um uh the watts riots uh and so myself and a film professor uh dr marcia gordon we actually wrote uh about it or she wrote about it and then we actually got to enter to the national film registry so you know that phone wasn't lost you can find copies of it it comes up every once in a while on ebay but you know just kind of bringing attention to it is really what we do here at av geeks as we kind of rediscover uh an example of that is a friend of mine went to an estate sale and bought a bunch of home movies of this professor and his wife traveling europe in the 30s and they're going through paris and they're going through an autobahn and then whoa they're at a hitler rally and you get a very close um shot of hitler talking um and that was something because that footage didn't really exist outside of that person's uh showing it so um i helped kind of give visibility to that um and you know i run across other stuff like well that's interesting that's important um but usually it's a specific niche thing so it's hard it's hard to give that a easy answer but um we are discovering stuff all the time uh excuse me all right let's watch this film which isn't rare it isn't lost but it's still interesting nonetheless uh and that's one of the reasons i like the film showing films is not necessarily because of their rarity but because of what we forgot like this film was distributed to lots of schools in the 60s and 50s and um we kind of forgot about it and so i like films like this because they teach us about what was we thought was important at the time and you can kind of do a comparison contrast and say like well we don't care about that now or wow that has radically changed and so this one is notice how many times i recommend you wash your hair and think about how many times you wash your hair i wash my hair every day i probably shouldn't but i do um how many times did they say for us to wash your hair let's watch keeping clean and neat and find out [Music] class this is john anderson and arlene veal from the 8th grade they want to choose a boy and a girl from this class to be in their assembly all right put your hands down they'll have to choose whomever john and arlene choose you can be sure of one thing it won't be anyone who isn't clean and neat that's because keeping clean and neat is something everyone is expected to do and for a very good reason it's important to your health and to the health of those around you don may feel that he looks neat enough and that he's clean enough but let's go back to the start of the day and see what we can do there you are don back in bed this morning first of all form the habit of getting up in plenty of time keeping clean and neat as a matter of forming good habits and letting them work for you [Music] now don't stall if you lie in bed so long that you have to rush how can you expect to be neat and clean the most important thing of course is a daily bath in summer or in winter when you're less hot and sweaty every other day will do make it a shower or a tub whichever you like morning or night it doesn't matter just so you keep yourself clean remember your ears they need a soapy washcloth when you wash your feet be sure to get between your toes and the bottom of your feet and keep a fingernail brush handy for your nails you're not clean if your fingernails aren't [Music] then rinse all the soap off learn to make good habits work for you by following the same order every time [Music] and here's another habit wash your hair on the same day each week day saturday whichever day you choose use a good shampoo or soap and rub in the lather with your fingers not your fingernails lather up twice with a rinse in between and after the second lather when your hair is perfectly clean rinse again keep rinsing till every bit of soap is out [Music] there feels good doesn't it give yourself a good rub down with the towel until you're completely dry now before you brush your hair be sure your comb and brush are clean wash them the day you wash your hair your teeth if you brush them well last night they're clean now brush them again after breakfast so they'll be clean again until lunch one more good habit before you leave the bathroom see that it's neat and clean too towel and washcloth hung up to dry capped back on the shampoo bathtub clean basin clean yes everything is put away now your clothes your underwear should be just as clean as you are clean socks but look at those shoes they need to be cleaned and shined what you need is a shoeshine kit there you are you can make one like this yourself you know that's better isn't it be sure the top is back on the polish now to finish dressing oh that's no way to treat your clothes if they're clean enough to wear again hang them up fold the trousers neatly over a hanger put the shirts on hangers too hang them up in your closet look at that closet before you do another thing get busy and straighten it out hard work isn't it but if you learn the habit of keeping it neat you'll never have to go through anything less now then a clean shirt and you're ready to take a look at yourself hair combed face ears and neck all clean cuffs button clean hands nails clean and trim shirt buttoned and tucked in belt through all the loops trousers buttoned or zipped socks pulled up shoes shined and shoelaces tied not bad not bad at all quite a bit better than the way you looked in class this morning now how about you mildred let's see what habits will help you keep you need a weekly shampoo too of course girls have to wash their hair in the afternoon or evening so there's time to put it up don't go to bed with wet hair putting up your hair is something you have to learn and everyone does it differently it depends on how you wear it you may still need to get help from your mother on this [Music] this is a good time to trim your fingernails make a habit of doing it the day you wash your hair boys like to use fingernail clippers but girls can shape them better with an emery board and see that little sore place where you pulled away the skin next time ask your mother to cut it and you won't have a sore place like that [Music] don't forget your toenails after a bath is a good time to cut them because they're softer then cut them straight across and not rounded like fingernails oh meldrit look at your clothes well that's as bad as don was things that are dirty should go into the laundry things that are clean enough to wear again should be folded and put away make sure there are no wrinkles in it when you fold it and that dresser drawer you'd better straighten it out this very minute [Music] there if you learn the habit of keeping it neat you'll never have to go through anything like this and now that your room is neat and you're clean isn't it nice to climb into bed in the morning give yourself plenty of time you can't rush and be neat be sure your under things are clean your shoes should go on over clean socks and take a look at your shoes are they as neat as they should be before you put on your dress it's a good idea to brush your hair be sure you have washed your brush don't put a dirty brush on clean hair brush and brush and brush at least 100 strokes [Music] there look how it shines you did get all the soap out last night didn't you [Music] and now what dress to wear your dress has to be suited to the [Music] occasion no that's a lovely party dress but it's too dressy for school there that's more like it but would another color look better as you watch colors you'll learn what combinations look best on you and now how do you look you can see what a big difference a little extra care can make in your appearance [Music] [Applause] good appearance helps you get along with others but much more important keeping clean and neat is something we expect of everyone as a health measure for ourselves and for our community it's simply a matter of learning good habits and letting them work for you don't you think you can do it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] um i like that uh fixing it up um song good luck and let it lift it down [Music] hard work isn't it um it's it's a great uh i think back in our willful fist days uh when we were a bunch of people uh playing films and doing loops that was a favorite uh song to loop um this next film is an example of beautiful kodachrome courtesy of coronet films the titles clip though but this is beginning responsibility other people's property now this is different than other people's property uh the um centron film and what's weird is i don't have a title i'm not i wonder if that's actually a different name because it just doesn't seem like it hasn't much to do with other people's property i'm just wondering if that was mislabeled many many years ago all right anyways that's my internal um thoughts uh but anyways here we go beginning responsibility beginning responsibility other people's property enjoy people's things would you like to know why well it started one day when we found our playground swings broken no one could play on them how could the swings have been broken so badly way we could think of was this someone must have been angry and deliberately broken the swings broken something that belongs to the whole school the marking on the walls of our school was almost as bad some people seem to think it was funny to mark up the walls they forgot how much work it would be to clean the walls so we have talked in our class about taking care of things that don't belong to us this is one of the paintings made to show our ideas about taking care of other people's things mary jane painted it of course everyone in our class is painting and drawing pictures but mary jane has worked especially hard so let's find out what her pictures say the first picture shows a boy giving something to a man do you see well this is the story mary jane means to tell it begins as kenneth finds a billfold what should he do he looks inside to find out whose it is it's mr macpherson kenneth knows who it belongs to so what did he do with it do you agree with kenneth that finders should not be keepers seeing other people's things is important don't you think see how glad it makes mr macpherson that kenneth retail fold have you ever found something and returned it to its owner don't you think returning things you find is an important part of taking care of things that belong to others that's what mary jane means in her first picture her second picture shows a boy on a bus and this is what mary jane means to tell often we ride on a bus even our school bus we are careless we all like to ride in a good safe clean bus but sometimes some of us forget joe is pushing his foot against the seat in front of him and marking it up he isn't paying any attention he's thinking about what he and his friend are talking about he doesn't even see that he has pushed the seat loose see how much damage carelessness can do now joe sees what has happened and he's going to try to fix it there and luckily joe has an extra handkerchief he can use to clean the back of the seat doesn't that look better don't you think joe knows it's better to be careful than careless about things that don't belong to us yes it's much better to be careful that's the story mary jane tells in her picture the third picture shows a girl getting a book from her teacher it's really the story of something that happened in our class i had given a book to irene when she opened it she found oh look torn pages folded pages marked pages why the book was ruined irene brought it right back to me as she should i was surprised when i saw it of course the child who did it would have to give our class a new book but wasn't it too bad the book wasn't cared for irene was glad to get a book that had been cared for for she likes to take care of things that belong to the class and the school and learning to take care of books that don't belong to us is important to everyone don't you think so that's what mary jane's third drawing tells the last picture is about mary jane herself it shows her borrowing paints from her neighbor richard these are special paints that belong to richard he let mary jane use them on her special painting and she takes good care of them she's careful not to spill them covers on tightly so the paints won't drop shake the brushes and the paints clean she puts things neatly and she returns them as soon as possible that's the way to take care of things that belong to others isn't it i was so pleased with mary jane's painting that i asked her to let me show it to the class after all her painting shows important things that will make ours a better school all of us must learn to take care of things that don't belong to us return things and be careful of things we use yes mary jane's is a special picture she'll certainly want to take it home and show it to her parents after school mary jane can't help noticing how clean the walls are when everyone takes care of things we do have a better school don't we mary jane wants to get home quickly to show her painting to her mother oh be careful of your painting mary jane [Music] oh oh mary jane is having trouble with the wind and look her painting it's gone yes it's easy for any of us to forget and become careless where could the painting have gone too bad a few minutes later richard is coming along the same walk what what's that it's mary jane's painting can richard get it without damaging anything well if he's careful there now what would mary jane's painting be doing here what should richard do about it mary jane is home now and wishing she'd been more careful then mary jane it's lucky for mary jane that richard remembered about taking care of other people's things it isn't easy to learn to be careful but both richard and mary jane will try hard to learn more and more about taking care of things will you do you remember what the pictures tell do you remember how important it is to return things you find do you remember how easy it is to damage things just by being careless and sometimes you can fix things taking care of books is important anyone who damages a book should have to replace it don't you think so if we use something that belongs to someone else don't you think we should keep it clean and neat and return it just as soon as we can these lessons take practice but when we do practice them we are happier others are happier too when we take care of other people's [Music] things let me try that again with the microphone on uh so that reek at the end was uh because it was missing the leader at the end and so it just kind of pulled from the um the reel and made that sound so there you go uh you know speaking of school property and feeling bad about it uh this is a wonderful it's a longer film but it's great it's beautiful color and it deals with juvenile delinquents and we all love juvenile delinquents and this is uh one who is on the verge of being lost and what can teachers do and staff faculty do to pull back these kids before they're they're gone and they drop out and they become burdens on society this is called uh mike makes his mark uh let me just say before we start uh thanks everybody for tuning in thanks everybody for the coffee uh you can support 80 geeks by buying us a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash av geeks um as you could tell my nephew also drinks this coffee so it's it's a good cause all right and you can also hit like and subscribe those are great ways to say hey we appreciate what you're doing and i don't think it costs anything at this point so um go ahead and just hit that button all right so here it is mike makes his mark uh again we're missing the title and it rolls a little bit but it gets into the nitty-gritty and it's pretty great enjoy hey mike you want to be more careful you could hurt somebody keep your hands off me sorry mike didn't mean to grab you those teachers are going to have a rough time with that one hi eddie hi kid what are you doing here i thought you were going to make the old man get your work from he says they got to stay in school well nobody could make me if i didn't want to okay move it along so long kid be a good boy and uh mind the teacher [Music] new or not it's still just a school nobody can make me go if i don't want to [Music] okay so they made me late [Music] boy [Music] maybe some cleaning floor no one is to remove it i want it left there [Music] oh i am mr tollefson your principal i am glad to be able to welcome you students and teachers alike to our beautiful new school a place where we will work and learn yes and play too and we will learn to do all of these things together as responsible members of our school community however unpleasant as it is for me to speak of this on our first day of school i find it necessary to bring up something which concerns us all one someone of us here in this assembly has deliberately made a black mark on the clean wall outside the main entrance that mark on the wall is the first black mark against us against our school i have given orders it is to be left there every time you go in or out notice it think what it means that first week as the students began to get used to their new school miss dewey was beginning to know her students this was no haphazard process of her feelings and first impressions but a careful objective effort to understand each student's needs interests and where good teachers could best give guidance the cumulative record of a student his past achievements his aptitudes his health the suggestions of previous teachers were all a help miss dewey did not use these records to judge her students but only to help her understand and guide them there was charlie charlie big as any man but so awkward behind in reading too and anne quick brilliant a challenge to any teacher to keep her doing the best that's in her gene wanting to be liked but so shy i almost hate to call on him and see his blushing struggle to express his ideas freda such a pretty girl self-conscious because she can't afford clothes as nice as the other girls frank popular a good student you just know he'll be on the student council and then there's mike i wonder [Music] one thing no one's going to tell mike he'll make his own decisions if only he isn't trapped into making all of his decisions against things against the school against his parents against the teachers mike's cumulative record health apparently all right sight and hearing average work habits interests abilities music mathematics somewhat above the average achievement not up to what he could do two full years below is great in reading this will take some extra work [Music] mike fred [Music] nurse now both be there certainly judge i'm sure i'm sure we can work it out thank you sir and what's bothering this english literature and composition problems not really it's just that here's a boy i think you should get to know an ounce of prevention eh oh mike well mike's not a bad boy really it's just that the first paper he's written has some ideas about quitting school get a job and have money of my own he's behind in his reading too and he'll get further behind unless he has help [Music] i just think you should get better acquainted with it sure i'll make it a point to see the program at the new school soon began to absorb the students but mike mike just wouldn't go along school was still just something he had to put up with [Music] oh mike you like this electrical stuff well it's okay i guess anybody could do a better job than that oh looks pretty complicated to me ordinary 3-2 manful farm not even high-five well you know more about it than i do are you taking electrical shop no not till next time well maybe you ought to join the kilowatt club the meeting this afternoon i see oh what do they know well i gotta get back to my studies on well let's go down to my office i've got some books down there on electronics that you might be interested in of course if you've got some studying that you just have to do when mike first came to my office he was understandably suspicious what was i trying to put over on him anyway but a school counselor is in a good position with the kids my job helping them talk about problems stuff like this is all right but i don't see what good all that english and history and reading junk is ever gonna be those guys died a million years ago what do they know about things the way they are now once i get out of school and then the radio work all those all that reading joke won't do me any good at all you just don't want any more school do you mike maybe if you go around to some of those kilowatt meetings do some extra reading on electronics you'd be really ready for a job when you graduate i can get a job all right eddie frank did besides i know a lot about radio already mike all of us grow up and have an itch to quit school get a job a man named mark twain wanted to be a steamboat pilot he was one of those guys that lived a million years ago anyway there was another boy in his town a year or two older maybe you know some kid like this whenever his boat was laid up that boy would come home and swell around in his blackest and greasiest clothes so that nobody could help remembering that he was a steamboat man and he used all realities in his talk as if he were he forgot common people could not understand them this fellow had money too and hair oil also an ignorant silver watch joey brass watch chain but some of us could not get on the river our parents would not let us well what happened oh mark twain got to be a steamboat pilot all right and a good one it's all written down here for anybody who wants to read it you can take it along with the others if you like it's okay [Music] one of the good things about the new school program is that the teachers have time to meet regularly and discuss better ways of reaching students who have special problems and i've just about reached the end of my patience with him perhaps some of you could give me a little clue that would help me get closer to him i've been wondering how long would be until someone brought mike up in these discussions he shows absolutely no interest or desire to learn mass either i've had to talk with mike he wants to quit school go into radio work or some kind of electronics mike's record shows that he does have a special interest in math that'll work also seems interested in music apparently though he's never had any very special wreck any of these things you go up to miss trent in room 309 she can really make reading interesting mike do give her a chance okay oh and mike tell mr kendall what you decide about the orchestra nuts to this reading stuff i just walked out that didn't show how long is old man carlson gonna leave it there hi eddie well hi kid what do you say you looking for a job want me to pick you up with a boss me and the boss are just like that you won't wish to stay like that you just keep bending the handle of that shovel maybe you've got a job i could do look kid it's easy to grab the handle of a shovel it ain't so easy to let it go beat it kid you belong in school [Music] mr thompson i was wondering if you have a job i could do here any kind of a job i know a lot about wiring and tv sets and radios already all right mike if you want to come in after school sweep up burn the trash wash the windows anything to make yourself useful i'll pay you oh say 50 cents every afternoon you understand you've got to finish school before anybody will give you a real job oh boy when do i start [Music] sure working in a radio shop after school is fine but you told me that mr thompson says you ought to finish school and to do that you'll have to pick up on that reading i'm nuts why does a good guy like tatum have to spoil everything and what about playing in the school orchestra have you decided to try it well sure i guess um [Music] now i know we haven't been playing together very long but if we're going to be ready for the music festival it means that we've all got to practice our parts individually as well as with the others homeroom with miss dewey was turning out to be a busy interesting time here they got the school news arranged and planned their activities and learned and studied the things that we used to study only in courses labeled civics geography history or english and in spite of himself mike began to realize that quite often the class was working and studying and talking in terms of things that he really wanted to know also with the increasing population many home appliance stores including radio and tv shops has sprung up in the community the competition between these stores is very great some may go out of business but even so everybody expects an increase in the number of service and repairmen needed especially for television sets work like this requires special training on the part of service and repairment from all indicators yeah i can't just anybody monkey around trying to fix the television set [Music] even the reading wasn't as bad as he'd expected miss trent let him read about electronics showed him how to get more books and magazines from the library [Music] she even seemed to understand something about electronics just from helping mike reed [Music] but it was still a lot easier just to dream of having a job and money and a car like eddie franks [Music] of course there was the orchestra and practicing for the music festival [Music] mike let me show you how to operate a tube tester now first look i promised this for five o'clock here's the instructions on how to operate this thing you go ahead with it it's all written out right here with with off button that peppers that pepper said with a button that depper said but you got that done yet it's all right here in the book anybody should know enough to follow instructions now let me in here [Music] the heavy tangled undersea griffs that's a long o mike how do you pronounce o w o yes gross that's right often trap the divers that's fine mike you're getting to understand the vowels very well next time we'll just go on with this lesson mr can you read this let's see operating instructions for a tube tester with the off button depressed now that means you take the off button and push it down depressed means push down connect the attachment plug how could she know anything about radios just from raining right at the end of it yes i'm mr tatum mike's counselor at school oh has he got into some trouble again oh no no nothing like that won't you come in thank you mike and i've got to be pretty good friends i'm uh mike spock pleased to know you sir won't you sit down thank you it's really a part of my job to get acquainted with the parents not much just something that mike brought home it's about steamboats on the mississippi the guy that wrote it knew what he was writing about oh uh these are mike's sisters hello there are you coming to hear mike play in the orchestra mike didn't say anything about an orchestra oh please can we go please daddy now wait a minute mike's supposed to be in school to learn something you get ahead why is he wasting time in an orchestra some things are good to learn and do just for the satisfaction you get out of them anyway it's pretty important to mike well maybe my muscles are any good how's it going to pay off mike's always been musical i still don't see you i'm unlucky oh he's probably out with a frank like him eddie had told all of us he frank what to do it would be years yet before eddie even began to wonder if he hadn't missed something come on steamboat make your shot where you get this steamboat business just some guy read about in a book uh books [Music] nuts [Music] i brought back your book it's pretty good he's the best i'm sorry i wasn't home last night when you came over the old man's all steamed up out coming to the music festival even gave me dough to get tickets i don't see what all the fuss is about just coming to an old school throwing stuff around and banging things [Music] well so it was me that made the mark they don't have to leave it there forever what do you want to do about it mike let's go down and see mr thomas [Music] [Music] [Music] hi kid came around to see how you were [Music] doing [Applause] [Music] [Music] what makes the difference between a mic and an eddie [Music] other bleeding work and his father's question do good schools good teaching really make the difference perhaps it's the home maybe it's mike himself it's all of these mike has begun to show the mark of a man [Music] a happy ending there right um so uh you know this is made for teachers and faculty tenants school counselors it's it's to inspire uh also for ptas and for school boards to get them to realize the importance of like teachers this is what they do is they you know besides the three r's they they work on making uh their students protect productive members of society um and less of a burden on society later on in life so i'm a big fan of schools and public public uh education and trying to support them as much as possible because it's if you make if you give attention to even the the dumbest kid and everybody above then you're raising the society um and so um that's my soapbox uh and you can uh give us coffee for spouting our propaganda by donating here and buy me a coffee at avgeeks.com uh you can also go visit av geeks and see other shows that we've done in other uh propaganda that we put online and you can hit like subscribe ringing the notification bell uh and of course your comments are always appreciated i very much like uh what you guys have been saying the comments always uh funny but also sometimes very pithy and very interesting uh and so um we'll be back tomorrow not tomorrow tomorrow saturday we'll be back on monday and um so everybody have a great weekend uh great father's day um i'm gonna go visit my father on sunday and i'll say hi for you but uh everybody yeah have a good time and uh please rewind and love each other and uh we will see you soon all right take care eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight
