mix it up and show a french lesson i took french in high school as i've mentioned before and uh i remembered little to none of it i remember the first day um but i don't remember anything else um the uh but having visual aids like that like having a film or video to watch where you have people talking and interacting and just seems a little bit more for me i can latch on to it a little bit better and then showing if you could show caption subtitles of them talking and also i don't know if some of you have been watching this with subtitles uh automatically generated subtitles but it doesn't automatically know to switch to french and so um it makes sometimes for hilarious uh translations anyways i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the avgeek's lunchtime streaming show watch old 16 millimeter films uh like this next one which is hooked up to the telecini uh you can see it right there and uh we're gonna watch this one live uh it's very red and so this is um how power drives machines enjoy one morning bill and his father had planned to clean their attic but in an old trunk they had found a book a diary it had been by bill's great grandfather when he was a boy in the 1850s the sound of a passing jet reminded them that they still had a job to do in the world of today but the jet also reminded bill and his father of something else of one big difference between the past and the present that was power the power we used to drive machines bill knew that the many ways we use power today were not all known back in the 1850s back then in pioneer american communities most of the work was done by muscle power people depended on the power from their own muscles or from the muscles of animals for doing work but muscles were not the only source of power the power of the wind that blew sailing ships across the sea was also put to work to turn windmills which sometimes operated machinery for grinding grain but most windmills use the power of the wind to pump water from wells the power of moving water was also used to do work moving water was used to turn water wheels the turning water wheels drove other wheels these wheels operated machines which ground grain or did other work for the people of the 1850s people had used water wheels for many years but water in another form was coming into common use in the 1850s water in the form of steam in the world of bill's great grandfather steam first became important as a source of power to drive machines it was used to drive steam locomotives and to turn the paddle fields of steamboats now in the world of the 20th century bill's father showed him how steam is used in steam engines heat changes water to steam and there is enough energy in steam to move the lid of a pot now it was easy for bill to see how steam could be used as a source of power to drive machines in a steam engine there is a cylinder and a piston the piston moves up and down in the cylinder just as steam inside a pot can move a lid steam inside a cylinder can move a piston the moving piston can be made to move other things it can be connected so that it turns a wheel and the wheel can be used to move a train or to move a boat and so in this way in steamboats and trains steam was used as a source of power in the 1850s to drive machines by moving a piston in the cylinder [Music] steam is not as important as it used to be for moving pistons today in most machines the movement of pistons depends on another source of energy in an automobile for example gasoline is burned in the cylinders of the engine to move the pistons to show how burning gasoline drives a car bill's father covered the large end of a funnel with aluminum foil and put it on the stove he dropped some matches into the funnel and then put a piece of foil on the narrow end now the funnel was something like a cylinder closed at both ends then he lit the burner when the air in the funnel gets hot enough the matches ignite and produce hot rapidly expanding gases that push the cap off the funnel in the cylinders of an automobile engine expanding gases from burning gasoline push the pistons and they move up and down [Music] the moving pistons turn a crankshaft the crankshaft carries power to the wheels to drive the automobile while nearly all automobiles use gasoline for their fuel many trucks and other large machines burn a kind of oil in their engines this oil is called diesel oil because it is used in diesel engines expanding gases from burning fuel supply the power to drive this truck and many other machines that carry us and do work for us fuel is used in a different way in jet engines [Music] to show how burning fuel supplies the power to drive a jet bill's father wrapped some foil tightly around the head of a paper match and put it on a launcher made from a bent paper clip then he used another match to ignite the one on the launcher when that match ignites hot gases will rush out from under the foil and move rapidly to the rear watch as this rapid movement of the gases to the rear makes the mat shoot forward just like a jet in a jet engine air comes in at the front fuel is burned inside the engine then hot expanding gases rush out the rear this rushing of the gases to the rear makes the jets move forward and the jet engines move the airplane expanding gases that rush to the rear also supply the power to drive rockets power from expanding gases can be used in still another way in this turboprop engine hot gases from fuel burned inside the engine push against a wheel called a turbine the turbine turns the propeller a turboprop engine is one type of gas turbine engine this little propeller is turned by steam blowing against a turbine that is connected to the propeller the steam to operate this steam turbine comes from water boiling in a can on bill's stove in this water turbine model water flows through a tube to the turbine the power of the moving water will turn the turbine a turbine wheel isn't very different from a water wheel but it turns much faster bill could see that this spinning turbine is connected to a small electric generator the turbine operates the generator which produces enough electricity to light the little bulb at the top in the same way that water is used in this little turbine to produce electricity water is used at great dams and waterfalls to spin large turbines in powerhouses while moving water is important for generating electricity steam is also used just as steam turned the little wheel on bill's stove steam in large power plants turns great turbines to generate electricity the turbines are turned even faster than water could turn them bill's father reminded him that we depend on electric power to drive many kinds of machines in our homes machines such as electric mixers vacuum cleaners [Music] and can openers but electricity can drive more than small machines large ocean ships are also driven by electricity produced by steam turbines in this ship steam for the turbines is produced by the heat of atomic energy the power to drive most trains comes from electricity produced by diesel engines the power to turn this toy is coming from sunlight this is called a radiometer bill thought that perhaps in the future sunlight might be used to power large machines this would add another source of power to the many we have today yes the world of today is quite different from the world of bill's great grandfather and yet it's likely that when bill himself is a great grandfather the world will be even more different because of the power that will drive the machines of the future [Music] that was great man dad really didn't want to clean up the attic and someone said he trashes the kitchen um i would say that should have a heavy disclaimer you know the problem with educational films is that is you know why people make educational films is why you want to create a teachable behavior so that kids will behave appropriately and so i've always you know wondered about when the film shows kids going crazy on a school bus or kids going crazy in a cafeteria like that's just showing that behavior likewise with some uh explicit drug use films that show how to use the drugs and then show you know roughly what can happen like you know people watch that film and are like that's cool and they downplay whatever the dangers are or they feel like it's worth it um or that just adds to the excitement of it um this is an example of a film where if i saw that i'd be like huh interesting i think that i might want to do that so um you have to be careful uh this next film is uh about a horse pride enjoy [Music] yeah boys yeah careful skip whoa that's a nice horse aren't you going to train your horse no well every horse has to be trained for something all i want to do is ride my horse well if he's only for riding he's called a saddle horse but even saddle horses have to be trained what do you do teach them tricks no not exactly you boys want to hear how they raise saddle horses sure do grandpa come on over i'll tell you a story uh this is a story about a special saddle horse and how he grew up you know in some places there are big farms where a lot of horses live and on those farms there are pastures but in one of the pastures lived a little baby horse he was very young and almost always hungry so he drank mother's milk his name was pride because pride was so young his legs were a little weak and he decided to lie down it was nice to lie there with mother nearby but even then a small noise frightened him later they went to the pasture pride stayed close by mother here pride saw all the other horses that lived on the farm before long pride and his mother ran and played across the pasture and when the horses got hungry they went where tender grass grew pride's mother showed him how to nibble the good grass he learned how to use his lips to get a firm hole and bite off the grass near the ground with his front teeth some of the young horses had already learned to eat grass but to reach it they had to spread their long legs after eating they drank some cool water another treat for pride was the salt block he licked it the salt tasted good when pride was six months old it was time to leave his mother at first he missed her very much but soon he didn't mind because other young horses played with him [Music] what was that strange noise it was the farmer with his mowing machine this machine was cutting the weeds along the fence pride and his friend took one look and away they gathered across the pasture they couldn't get far enough away at last they slowed down and looked around what was this strange thing they wondered [Music] pride was curious about everything finally it was time for pride to get some new shoes these were made of iron and each one was carefully fitted they were fastened on with nails but pride's feet were hard and this didn't hurt him at all finally the nails were filed to make them smooth with new shoes pride was ready for his first lesson [Music] he was to learn how to hold his head up straight [Music] the trainer used a rattle to teach him this scared pride but soon he was not afraid and held his head high time passed quickly and soon pride was one year old he and the other horses ate lots of the juicy grass which made them grow pride rolled over to scratch his back oh that really felt good some days pride ran with the other horses in a herd across the rolling pasture some days he just stood and wondered what he would do when he grew up he didn't want to be a circus horse and do trick or be a policeman's hall or be a trotting horse [Music] or be a cowboys horse and help to herd cattle he didn't want to be a racehorse or be a jumper or be used on a farm he wanted to be a saddle horse [Music] the other horses got lessons too the trainer chose a very light saddle this he put on the horse very carefully so he wouldn't be frightened after this the trainer tightened a strap which held on the saddle pride's friend was surprised and a little frightened the helper walked him around and around so he could get used to the weight of the saddle after a while the trainer got on him [Music] the trainer gave him a gentle pat to show him there was nothing to fear around and around they went until the horse got used to a man riding [Music] after they were finished with the lesson the trainer put a horse blanket on pride's friend so he wouldn't catch coal [Music] after this lesson pride and his friends knew that they were saddle horses and that people would ride them pride decided he would try to be a champion saddle horse and then pride got a new teacher it was a girl every day they worked and before long pride could do the gate called a walk the trot was a little faster this was harder to do because of the way he must move his feet and then the canter first the front feet moved together and then the hind feet moved together pride learned his lessons well from his teacher at last the owner of the farm said the pride was so good he could be in the horse show the day of the horse show came first the people looked at the younger [Music] horses then everyone saw the pony and the trotting horses [Music] finally the saddle horse contest started and there came pride he held his head up high everyone looked at him as he passed finally it was time to judge the horses pride won the prize pride stood straight and proud he had worked hard to learn his teacher was proud of him too of all the horses in the show pride was the champion and that's the end of this story so pride was a saddle horse just like yours there let's see to teach them how they gallop [Music] yeah right there it is so you would use a film like this to teach um not only some fundamentals about horses and animals and life but also you can get kids who are really interested in horses particularly girls to engage and think about and write stories about et cetera et is it uh so this is an interesting film putting on the dog it's kind of a light um short it would maybe be shown before a feature film in a theater and then this was for a distribution on 16 for home use so it's called putting on the dog [Music] hunting dogs have been companions to men since long before the dawn of history but the most highly trained of all of these are the modern bird dogs here we are in the alder patches of southern nova scotia in quest of one of the rarest and most difficult of game birds the woodcock our dogs work carefully knowing exactly what is expected of them and then the point and what a picture and so far as we know the first motion pictures ever made of the woodcock in his native element [Music] hurry up you with a gun the woodcock's about to fly but chum the center stands as still as a statue [Music] here you see the dog the hunter and the most elusive of game birds dropped by a quick shot but it is not the thrill of good marksmanship that lingers the longest it's the memory of a man's favorite dog on point now let's journey down to pinehurst north carolina to see some of the most highly trained pointers in the country we're not going hunting this time just to witness what constitutes perfect performance by a couple of beautiful sportsman's dogs which are the result of long and infinitely careful training of many generations at the famous rito kennels [Music] first we'll go out in the training field with rido smasher he's taken from the kennels on a leash when turned loose however he stands perfectly still until given the signal to go bird dogs locate the game it's quail here by their sense of smell and when coming onto a cubby they freeze in their tracks like this [Music] nor must they move as much as a fraction of an inch no matter what happens until told to do so a friendly path or being lifted off the ground by the tail has no effect even when the hunter goes on ahead which is a temptation difficult for any dog to survive rido smasher remains standing like a statue in these same kennels there is also a setter who is master of the finest form and technique his name is rito major and what he doesn't know about the finesse of finding quail and holding a point in the best traditions of his breed few dogs have learned just watch the perfect stance of this beautiful center is it any wonder that their owner would not part with any of these dogs at any price [Music] one of the rarest of all the varieties of hunting dogs is the river toolers of nova scotia there are not more than a score of proficiently trained individuals in existence it is said that the primitive indians watched the wild fox entice ducks close enough to catch them and train their dogs which resemble the fox to do likewise hence we have river tollers or decoy dogs from behind an ordinary duck hunter's blind the dog is made to repeatedly chase a stick this believe it or not arouses the curiosity of the wild ducks to such an extent that they actually swim in close to see what it's all about the dog mustn't bark or stop to stare at the approaching birds and the hunters must stay completely concealed or the birds will fly away before they have come within range of the guns but in this way they have been enticed almost to the shore [Music] then when the guide gives the signal the hunters rise up and we'll have roast duck for dinner [Music] these dogs are also excellent retrievers although this particular one was so well trained that he had gnawed the approaching duck so completely that the guide had to point out to him where the birds had fallen whether or not the claim is true that by this method the fox ever was able to lure a wild duck in close enough to catch it or if the indians ever saw it accomplished really matters little the fact remains that these dogs are bred to resemble the wild spots and they are capable of luring even the weary black mallards in close enough for the hunter to shoot them [Music] another fine breed of hunting dog is the chesapeake bay retriever they take their name from chesapeake bay maryland although the type originated from newfoundland training puppies is sometimes a long and discouraging task they are first thought to retrieve a wad of cloth or canvas tied to somewhat resembling a dove later they are trained with real ducks in water when their education is properly completed they make one of the best of retrievers this is house pal american and canadian show bench champion owned by anthony a bliss of new york hal is going to give us a demonstration of just how a champion chesapeake properly retrieves the tame duck from the frozen surface of the training pond without injuring or ruffling a feather these dogs are very tender mouth and the duck in fact has done this so often that he believes it's a game that's a boy go on pal go to it and don't mind that old mallard laughing at you you're doing fine sooner or later you'll get him and then you'll have the last laugh that's a good boy keep up the good work stock it with the left you're almost there and after all remember you're a champion [Music] taking the duck gently in his mouth which is an important part of careful training of every bird dog pal comes home with the bacon or duck i should have said to the handler of a hunting dog a nice weekly has the same pleasant reaction as a home run to a baseball enthusiast but being a champion is just part of the day's work for how's pal [Music] now how do fancy poodles get in with these hunting dogs poodles with all their coquettish hair trimming are associated with silken boudoirs but they were once used entirely for hunting their original german name is meaning puddle dog these wonderful individuals are lackey niger the white one and champion grizzly library of piperscoff two of the best of their breed in the world and prides of the black king kennels at ketona new york just to prove they are not the [ __ ] dogs most people think and as expert and hardy as any other breed we put a couple of them to a severe test it is near zero weather and ice clinches the lake but breaking through into the frigid water cannot discourage these sturdy blue bloods from reaching and retrieving the wild duck that floats far out from shore it's blacking cafe parfait that's his name who reaches the first and proudly starts swimming in to deliver the bird to his trainer although the poodle is used today almost exclusively as a show dog or for theatrical purposes because of their extreme intelligence and facility for learning they are still used in germany scotland and england as retrievers these two however are among the very few in this country that have been trained for this purpose now we'll hide behind this vine for it's a stormy day and the ducks are flying there they come and watch them drop at the order to go and not before the dog is out of the blind like a flash and on his way this time it's labrador retrievers with which we are working they are built very much on the order of chesapeake also come originally from newfoundland and are black in color these fine dogs belong to major max speichman and are out for a day sport on a shooting preserve near ventura california [Music] here come more ducks a shot and a splash these dogs watch the flying ducks as closely as do the hunters and they mark the spot where the hitbirds fall when they have difficulty in locating a fallen bird they are trained to respond to directions from the handler or hunter although it is very seldom they need such assistance what's this we're about to witness a dog and cat fight [Music] well there he goes and he was such a nice dog but it just goes to show what good backyard manners a hunting dog can be trained to have and of course the cat deserves a bit of credit too all in all whether they be pointers chesapeakes poodles or kitchen hounds or champions or just plain mud a dog is a mighty fine pal to have around [Music] thank you uh william for the coffee it's great um maybe this next film is about you maybe not i don't know if you ever went by billy but the main character in this film is named billy uh and then it billy shows up in uh not the character but the name um billy shows up in uh sophie the germ fighter as well and this is thematically very similar this is billy the clean and so it's another like cowboy related kind of metaphor for being clean so i'm not saying that william needs to be clean but i'm just saying that it's coincidence that yeah all right here we go hey doesn't that kid over there look familiar the one in the football jersey yeah isn't that isn't that the kid that cleaned up his own backyard the kid had cleaned up his own room the kid that cleaned up his own self that's him that's billy the clean say yeah how come he's so dirty [Music] everybody gets dirty i mean you can't help it you play and you get dirty just like everything else [Music] i mean look at this car it gets dirty mr jordan washes it every week he soaps it he rubs it it shines like new for a while then it gets dirty again clothes are something you have to wash all the time mrs frost washes hers every week now they look clean and smell clean i like the smell of clean clothes don't you now dogs get even dirtier than kids sometimes this dog smells like a garbage can who wants to pet a garbage can he doesn't mind it because it makes him feel better he doesn't scratch so much it can be fun to wash things my sister even gives the dollar back [Music] almost everything looks better when it's washed including billy [Music] right now he's billy the dirty but he can't stand being dirty for long that's why they call him billy the queen we like it when other people keep clean too [Music] they look better they smell better they smile better and they feel better what other reasons are there for keeping clean think about what you get on your skin besides dirt germs go into the air and on our hands they also get on most everything we touch which means that we get millions of germs on us all over us every day because of germs we're careful to wash out any cuts or scrapes we might get and to bandage them so we don't get infections [Music] sometimes people get infections on their feet between their toes keeping feet clean and dry helps prevent infections from starting germs are one cause of cavities food particles help germs grow brushing removes things that hurt your teeth wouldn't it be nice if we had some really easy fun ways of getting clean [Music] when we're very young we don't have much to say about when we get washed it's done for us [Music] as we get older we learn to do more for [Music] ourselves most of the time it's easy to know when to wash like after playing [Music] and after working [Music] it's good to get in the habit of washing after going to the toilet too to keep your hands free of germs use plenty of soap and take time to do both sides wrists too get all the dirt off so you don't end up wiping it on the towel once you get in the habit of doing it right you hardly have to think about it what about when you're someplace where you don't have a wash basin or towels or washcloths you can still get clean just so long as you have some water and soap you can probably think of another time when you should wash your hands before each meal can you think of why it's important to wash before eating come along fine you probably know the best times to brush your teeth after each meal if you can to get rid of food particles that might cause decay it's also good to brush at night before you go to bed use a toothpaste that's especially made to prevent cavities if you can if there are times when you're out of toothpaste you can use some bicarbonate of soda from your kitchen instead brush your teeth well scrub them all over upper lower front and back using dental floss will help you clean between the teeth where it's hard to get with a brush keeping the ends of the floss wrapped around your fingers helps you to hold it tight rinsing when you're all done helps wash away germs and food particles that cause cavities my mom washes the sheets on my bed they're always clean so i wash and get clean before i go to bed you sleep better that way least i do a shower is just about as much fun as running in the rain usually i take a shower every few days if it's real hot i take one every day or if i play king of the hill or any of those other games where you get really dirty taking a bath can be kind of fun i don't try to wash my own hair usually mom or dad helps with that even when you're someplace where you don't have a shower or a tub you can find ways to wash all over just with a wash pan or pail and a bar of soap and a cloth and some water clean clothes are just like clean sheets on the bed they feel real good to get into especially after a shower or a bath [Music] i don't put on clean clothes every day but i do put on clean socks and underwear during the day i don't think too much about getting dirty i mean you play and it happens but it's also fun to get clean hey look there he comes the kid is it yes sir it's billy the clean why he's cleaned up again yes sir it cleans faster than any kid i ever saw [Music] this is the story of a guy who found out that even heaven makes mistakes are you kidding you're gonna put me into the body of another man that's me inwardly you haven't changed you're still joe pendleton that's what you and i see but ultimately your video funds and that's what everyone else will see mr bondsworth that works of course max i'm not farnsworth i'm joe pendleton farnsworth was murdered by his wife and his private secretary i'm not really leo farnsworth what why are you looking at me like that he's memorizing your face [Music] rated pg [Music] [Music] so a man who went to heaven before his time i'm not supposed to be here well you guys made a mistake and came back to life in the body of another man that's me inwardly you haven't changed you're still joe pendleton that's what you and i see but outwardly you'll be fine to us and that's what everyone else will see warren beatty julie christie i'm working for phil brooks they all do clever little gene wilder madeleine kahn harvey corman alex carris don delauise slim pickens and mel brooks in the funniest film of all time are you crazy they'll never go for it and then again they might the amazing blazing saddles rides again raided on blazing saddles is back are you crazy they'll never go for it and then again they might directed by bell brooks work work works and starring mel brooks cop.warp so who else is there to blame buttmill brooks yes what a nice guy we've gotta protect our pony bologna job gentlemen who can argue with that the amazing blazing saddle rides again rated r foreign burke reynolds and paul winfield two cops who use every trick in the book as they crack down on the nastiest game in town to kill those kids why'd you hear that old couple we're gonna make dog food out of you burt reynolds and paul winfield fight it and it's like nothing you've ever seen before bingo hustle rated r 30 number two revised [Music] burke reynolds is the cop who cracks down on the dirtiest game in town catherine deneuve is the call girl who plays that game they meet they love and it's like nothing you've ever seen before hustle we all do it rated r hustle um so those were tv trailers and you could tell uh at least during the blazing saddles that there was water damage you could see occasionally weird kind of noise like visual noise but also audio noise you'd hear about and what was happening was water got onto the reel and so it would like smear the emulsion um which visually can be beautiful unless you really are valuing that film and you don't want it to be damaged um but since it's an optical soundtrack that's that's what you're hearing and so as it got closer and closer to the hub it got closed it it periodically got and then stopped and then there was a new reel which didn't have water damage um so there you go um a quick thing is i met and introduced burton gillum who was in blazing saddles had a lot of amazing stories about how um uh mel brooks desperately wanted him to be in the movie and he was a firefighter and he kept getting phone uh phone calls at the firehouse he worked at by bill brooks richard pryor all these other people who wanted him to be play this role that he played in there which is kind of this villainous uh cowboy and uh you know he was like i i don't unders you know i i don't know if i can do this because i make certain amount of money being a firefighter and i don't know if i can take time off to do this you know gig and uh this was basically the role to put him on map um and uh anyways really fascinating uh mel brooks is is definitely plays with race and in ways that people don't necessarily feel comfortable nowadays but it it's uh it's fascinating nonetheless um and uh pretty funny i mean richard pryor was one of the screenwriters and so he really you know knew what buttons to push um and you know the film ultimately is i kind of when i intro the film i said basically here's a story about uh corrupt politicians who use racism to further their greed and then i said well but that's in the past we don't have to deal with that now um so i
