AV Geeks Lunch 6-1-2023

hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where I'm going to increase the volume a little bit so you can hear me uh is that any better technology man technology uh yeah so we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was uh some home movies uh uh from the Oregon archive um visiting uh Switzerland I guess all right let's go ahead and get things started with Sylvester the mouse with the musical ear enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] filled with wonderful sounds there lived a small country mouse his name was Sylvester he loved his Meadow very much for all his friends and favorite things were there on the north Little Birds fluttered in the dusty road and chirped with happiness in the morning sun in the South meadowlarks flew from tree to tree and sang special songs to each other Sylvester heard them and felt happy to the east there was a cornfield where winds blew Softly by day and crickets chirped all night long and on the west there was a silver Brook that bubbled and gurgled over rocks and under a bridge Sylvester loved all the sounds of his Meadow for he had a musical ear he woke with the sounds of singing birds all day he listened to the Waters of the brook and the wind in the corn at night he would sit and hum softly to himself as he fell asleep he listened to the chirping crickets One Day Men came from the city with big machines Sylvester was very upset before they dug up the little road on the North and made a big Highway the birds were frightened and flew away their music was gone and Sylvester heard only the zoom and whoosh of dragons men cut down the lovely Woods on the south to put up rows and rows of houses they chased away the meadowlarks who went to sing Somewhere Else that was just the beginning but the men cut down the cornfield on the East to make room for shops as the city came closer it left no room for chirping crickets or soft winds men dug up the silver Brook and stopped the musical gurgle Sylvester felt lonely and sad and he stopped humming to himself all he could hear was the zoom and whoosh of cars and trucks one day the men came back with the bulldozer they dug up the grassy meadow where Sylvester lived and they even dug up Sylvester that was the last straw I am no longer a country mouse I have become a city mouse said Sylvester I must find a new home and away he went it was hard to find the right place for a mouse with a musical ear all at once he heard lovely music and in he went it seemed just right for a mouse with a musical ear so he decided to stay inside Sylvester found a fine home with a little door and a wire fence in he went humming softly to himself for the first time in days he was a happy City Mouse he loved the house and the music he heard violin drums and pianos when he went out through his doorway he walked across his wire fence and made lovely music Sylvester was very quiet by day for he was listening to the music in the shop when the shop was dark at night he played on his wire fence he played all kinds of songs quiet ones and noisy ones people going by the shop at night asked the storekeeper who is playing music in your shop at night one night this listened very quietly in the dark and heard Sylvester begin to play his music he did not see Sylvester in the dark he saw that it came from the guitar a guitar that plays by itself why it must be magic he cried people heard about the magic guitar and stood outside the shop at night to listen far away in the West Tex heard about the magic guitar Tex loved singing and music but had no guitar a magic guitar is just what I need he decided away to the city went Tex it was a long way so he sang to make the trip shorter finally he came to the city and found the magic guitar he bought the guitar from the storekeeper and that made him very happy Tech sent off for the West with his magic guitar he traveled along singing as he went inside the guitar was Sylvester sound asleep that night Tech stopped to rest in a grassy meadow out of the quiet Darkness Tex heard music coming from the guitar [Music] he's looked up and there was Sylvester this is not a magic guitar cried Tex this is a Magic Mouse a mouse with a musical ear Sylvester stopped playing and looked around he saw a lovely grassy meadow and her lovely country sounds he looked up and saw a text they liked one another at once and soon became great friends Sylvester went home with dicks he played the guitar won't text sang just back from the city with my new guitar I'm just back from the city city oh so far they made lovely music together and traveled all around making music Sylvester traveled inside his house he would sit quietly at night humming softly to himself sometimes he was a country mouse and sometimes a city mouse but he was always a musical Mouse a mouse with a musical ear ending I guess um so behind me I have a uh oh yeah let me just say quickly so that whole thing about the somebody mentioned Reading Rainbow the whole thing of uh there's films that basically take the illustrations from a book and then they just pan or zoom in or do whatever that is called an iconographic film Western Woods did a lot of those um this was the first Golden Books one that I've ever encountered but this one had a little bit of Animation in it but it was mostly just panning and stuff so anyways behind me scanner and I have a film set up make sure I actually have it named correctly I didn't um it's called Bakery beat this was from a batch of films I recently got from the Chicago Film Society they were beginning to clear out their closets and they pulled films that they um not weren't really interested in and so I got them uh thankfully so kudos to them for packing everything up uh anyways uh Bakery assembly line footage uh so much so that when uh Katrina and I were in Portland Oregon a couple of weeks ago uh we were driving around late at night a friend of ours was driving us around and we drove past the Franz Bakery which has been around since 1906 and we saw like big windows so you could actually look inside the bakery so we asked him to pull over it was like midnight and we ran over and they were making um English muffins and they were going down the conveyor belt and it seemed like there was some problem because there was a bunch of English muffins on the on the floor so I'm not sure exactly what happened but uh it was very exciting very very exciting so obviously a big fan of that uh let's see what do we got here um many here and some listen this film is another one of those information processing films uh made and released by a Centron and uh these have not disappointed these are pretty great so enjoy foreign [Music] on the other hand Captain Dreyfus was not only innocent he was defended by a marvelous orator the result was precisely the same so then must you speak of one that loved not wisely but too well training is readily available in public speaking extemporaneous speaking and conversation in a variety of languages comparable courses in the art of listening are rare let's look at various styles of listening and some of the problems that listeners encounter see if they remind you of anyone you know take this enrollment card to section e upstairs in the South wing and tell Mr Damon that you wanted to drama too but if that section's filled you've talked to Mr Lee about switching to drama three but you better stop with the business what is really difficult is listening active as opposed to passive listening listening is presumed to be so easy and automatic that many people hesitate to admit they have not understood what was said when this student does get enrolled in a class her reticence about seeking clarification when she doesn't understand could add to her difficulties and she won't be the only one make the listeners receptive to what is to follow there are there any questions on that do I hear any questions do I hear any breathing this girl isn't necessarily a poor listener she's just reluctant to ask questions when she's perplexed poor listeners fall into several General categories three of these categories are called Joe Helen and Maurice Joe is a non-attender he specializes in looking wide awake and alert while thinking about something else right Joe what Helen is an assumer she always assumes she understands not only what you said but what you meant to say and even what you intend to say next I know what you mean I'm quick on the uptake right no you assume that my meaning and your ideas are the same thing you don't have to explain I understand perfectly [Music] Maurice is a word picker he picks out and zeros in on certain words he attends selectively attends I attend regularly I'm here every day that's not the point I'm making Maurice he said attends didn't he well that's what attends means being someplace everybody knows that you get Joe Helen and Maurice in the same room and what have you got probably an average audience Mr Myers has the task of trying to communicate to them some of the techniques of playwriting an incident is an everyday occurrence such as meeting a friend or going to the store an event is an unusual or significant incident such as being attacked getting caught shoplifting you see the difference I see what he means if something bad happens it's an event something good happens it's just an incident are you sure that's what he means Kim Helen only uses questions to reinforce her own assumptions she seeks only a yes or no answer every disastrous happens to you it's an event right by contrast an alert listener will seek more information or a more clarifying explanation before assuming what is meant can you give me an example of something good happening that would be an event sure meeting someone and falling in love that would be an event going to the theater would usually be an incident going on opening night to a play in which you had an important role would be an event in your life now the great plays usually consist of a series of major events not just minor incidents major events let's see what our listeners have learned Maurice the word picker every play has to have a a championship prize fight or a National Convention something like that a major event Joe the non-attender I was wondering if he's going to ask us to write a whole play what about the difference between event and incident well it makes a big difference to me because I'm just not very good at writing Helen the assumer I think Mr Myers didn't say exactly what he meant to the way I got it he was really talking about the climax of a play if you think we're exaggerating ask any reader of examination papers Marge Clawson an otherwise efficient secretary has a bit of the assumer and word picker in her nature she will ask questions yes and what time will that be fine no that's all right I understand her questions are few proud of being alert Marge generally assumes that she does understand Marge I'm gonna have to cancel that meeting this afternoon see if you can make it or sometime next week will you I'll take over Mr Jordan gosh I should wait to call those vice presidents at the last minute here goes [Music] Mr Ramsey Mr Smith are here shall I send them in who ramzan Smith I told you I couldn't see them our principal client has a problem that has to be solved this afternoon I have a meeting with four of their vice presidents in half an hour you know that no Mr Jordan I canceled the meeting you what you told me to I did not I said cancel my appointment with those two sales representatives no you said cancel the meeting yes my meeting with the two salesmen this is not a meeting this is a sales call I canceled that meeting oh [Music] Marge may make the mistake of assuming she understands when she really doesn't but John Jordan has a bit of Joe's weakness sometimes he is a non-attender here are your airline tickets and you have confirmed reservations at the travel man Hotel 2418 East Bergen travel man okay I don't arrive little 11 pm oh I'll be pushed what do you mean No Reservations my secretary phoned you she probably called one of the others did she tell you an address oh maybe if you did I didn't hear I thought all I had to remember was travel man I'll have to call the other places and see which one I'm booked into how many travel man motels are there in San Diego anyway 26. oh [Music] a large part of a marriage counselor's job is simply trying to get people to listen to one another sometimes a husband and wife will both be word Pickers drinking bothers me there she thinks I'm an alcoholic I drink like one or two beers is that an alcoholic she didn't say alcoholic Maurice you did the way she says his drinking it means the same thing does it no she thinks it's wrong to have even one see he says I'm wrong no matter what I say I'm always wrong he didn't say you were wrong he said you thought drinking was right his drinking is though she's calling me an alcoholic again is there something wrong with drinking one beer wrong see I'm wrong again I'm always the one who's wrong or a couple could even be two Helens both quick to make wrong assumptions then there was a time on our vacation he's going to tell you about the time I got lost no I'm talking about the time I wanted to go fishing was it my fault you didn't catch anything I mean before we even got started just as I was getting you know that let me tell you what he did on Christmas one time I I forgot to bring home a present until too late that's not the Christmas I mean I'm talking about last Christmas when I didn't come home until two in the morning I'd forgotten about that no the point is she doesn't like my kind of vacation that's their point you know what she's always saying that's not true I never say that she says it all the time sometimes they are a couple of Joes both non-attenders so I told her I can't stand having her parents live with us they're driving me crazy another thing Joe runs up bills he opens charge accounts her father thinks he knows everything here I'm working to help him through college and he's charging a new color television set instead hey are either of you listening to what the other one's saying the complaints about her arthritis but she just likes to complain and then he bought a motorcycle they're trying to run our lives we can hardly pay the rent and he's buying a motorcycle Mary did you hear what Joe was saying about charging things did you hear what Mary said Joe sure she likes having her parents live with us where oh where are the listeners fortunately there are some around just try to remember this the alert listener makes an active effort to listen and to understand he or she stays in focus on the speaker the alert listener willingly admits to difficulties in comprehension I'm not sure that I understand what you're saying asks clarifying questions you don't really mean that a play can never make use of incidents the alert listener is aware of the ambiguities of language that word subsidies bothers me how is it different from calling it welfare The Listener may even be wise enough to know that the person who loses an argument is the one who has gained a new idea maybe living with my parents makes Joe feel too dependent maybe that's why he buys things to show his his independence Could That Be Right Joe what [Music] where am I where'd it go um of course I'm a big fan of these films these 70s films especially uh that deal with interpersonal relationships and discussion and talking and things like that it's really big fan big big big fan ah let's see what do I want to show you yeah this will work all right uh another Centron film uh they a bunch of them showed up in the batch of uh cornet films that we've been scanning the 9 000 films of which we've only scanned about 3 600. uh so we find new stuff all the time but here's basic hand tools take notes [Music] thank you [Music] there is a growing need for workers with the skills to maintain and repair complex machines using basic hand tools this film will illustrate some of the most frequently used hand tools and demonstrate their correct usage let's begin with one of the most basic tools of all the screwdriver there are three common types the blade screwdriver fits screws having a single slot the Phillips type screwdriver fits screws which have two Crossing slots the positorx screwdriver fits screws that have slots that look like this each of these types of screwdrivers comes in an assortment of sizes it's important to choose the correct size for the job the blade should be the same width as the screw head and thick enough to fit the slot snugly if you use a poorly fitting screwdriver you may damage both the slot and the blade tip using the wrong size Phillips screwdriver produces equally damaging results it's just as important to use the right type of screwdriver if you use a positorx screwdriver on a Phillips screw this could happen so always use the type and size of screwdriver that fits the screw slot properly and to maintain the fit always keep the screwdriver vertical to the screw never try to drive the screw at an angle avoid using screwdrivers for prying you may bend the shank or break the blade making the tool useless for frying jobs use a pry bar it's made for such work and can take the strain the hammer is another basic and well-known hand tool the ball peen hammer is used for such jobs as riveting the claw hammer is used to drive and pull Nails in carpentry work special hammers with plastic rubber or Rawhide heads are available for use on surfaces which could be damaged by an ordinary hammer here you see the correct way to grip any Hammer the hand grasps the handle near the end this grip provides maximum leverage and allows you to strike the object with the full face of the hammer avoid gripping the handle close to the hammer head this reduces the force of the blow and causes the hammer to strike at an improper angle you can increase the accuracy of your aim by resting the hammer on the object before drawing back for a strike never use the end of the handle for hammering this can split and ruin the wooden handle tools used to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts are called wrenches open end wrenches are commonly used on cable ends and hose connectors most open end wrenches have the head opening at a 15 degree angle to the body this makes the wrench more efficient in places where its space is limited you can turn the wrench over after each stroke this reverses the angle of the opening so it fits the next two sides of a six-sided nut thus you can keep turning the nut even though the swing of the wrench is limited always make sure an open end wrench fits tightly on the nut or bolt head if the ranch is even slightly too large it will slip off when you apply Force unlike the open end wrench the heads of these six point and 12 point box wrenches completely surround or box the nut or Bolt 12 point box wrenches are particularly useful in very small spaces because they're 12 Point opening allows you to continuously turn a knot with as little as 15 degrees of Arc one disadvantage of the Box wrench is that it must be lifted off the nut and repositioned after each stroke therefore many mechanics use the Box wrench only when they begin loosening or finish tightening a nut the rest of the time if there is working room they use an open end wrench because it can screw the nut much more quickly than the Box wrench for this reason some mechanics prefer combination wrenches which have a box wrench on one end and an open end wrench on the other of course when there is sufficient clearance to spin a box wrench in a full circle there's no advantage in switching to an open end wrench when you must tighten or loosen a number of knots you can usually save time by using a socket wrench a special mechanism inside the ratchet handle allows you to turn the knot in One Direction and Ratchet the handle back for another stroke without raising the socket off the nut for this reason you can turn the knot very rapidly a lever on the ratchet handle changes the direction of ratcheting so the tool can both loosen and tighten nuts socket wrenches are sturdy tools but never hammer on them or use a pipe to increase Leverage you could damage the ratcheting mechanism in addition the toolbox of a well-equipped mechanic will contain at least one or two adjustable wrenches for use on odd size Nuts and Bolts this tool is similar to an open end wrench but has an adjustable jaw the wrench is placed on the nut and the adjusting knurl is turned to tighten the jaw on the nut the wrench should always be placed on the nut so that the pulling force is applied to the fixed jaw as shown here no matter what kind of wrench you use remember this rule whenever possible pull on the wrench don't push pushing on a wrench to loosen a tight nut can be hazardous a lesson many novice mechanics have learned the hard way on those rare occasions when you must push on a wrench use the base of the Palm with your hand open Pliers are tools you will use on many mechanical and electrical repair jobs these are some of the most common types they're all simple and easy to use tools channel lock pliers can adjust to two or more positions for gripping small or large objects they are multi-purpose pliers often used for grasping clamps and cables and for turning round Fasteners such as hose couplings diagonal cutting Pliers are useful for pulling and installing cotter pins their sharp diagonal Jaws make it easy to spread the ends of the cotter pin and cut it to the right length long nose pliers are used for bending wire and for working with small objects in hard to reach places most long nose pliers have a side cutter which you can use to cut thin wires but to cut heavy gauge wire you will need to use lineman's pliers which are specially designed for this purpose one final point never use pliers to tighten or loosen nuts this can damage the pliers Jaws always use a wrench on nuts this film has demonstrated the correct usage of several basic hand tools what you have learned will make you more skillful at a variety of Maintenance and Repair jobs [Music] [Music] hey get down from there now good hey turn it off [Music] what if it bumps that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with Danger ous [Music] I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my toolbox and I'll take myself and look I climbed up on a Dozier with my mechanic's Pride I said if you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside [Music] three finger although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nixon Burns and scratches show the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got chaos fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what made me real three fingers machine mechanics burning it on them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the Blues [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] around my mind [Music] [Music] there you go
