so foreign so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and look back with some hindsight um but also uh how glorious uh it is um the that film was a series of home movies from a collection that a friend of mine acquired i don't know if it was at an estate sale or on ebay and unfortunately we don't know much about the family um because the whole movie has been separated from the family so we don't know who those kids are the kid that was doing the i'm assuming was doing maybe the elvis uh kind of just rocking back and forth or might have been doing uh the beatles because that was like 63-64 because if we saw the world's fair um anyways i love kids uh hamming it up for the camera it's a lot of fun uh all right uh so we got some cornet films uh and this one is communication the message can you get the message joy hey i'm looking for a message anybody around here see a message here's something is this the message you're looking for okay pancho you found your message now what do we do in communication the message is information that's shared by a sender and a receiver does that give you any ideas about what to do sure does hey man i'm a cinder this is my message i'm sending my message and i'm the receiver i'm receiving the message we've shared the message that's communication man i'm sending my message i'm receiving my message i'm receiving and now i'm sending my message this is communication the sender the message the receiver well now class what else do we know about messages zora a message can often be something that's hurt or something to see like a picture or word and sometimes a message a mixture can be it's something to hear and it's something to see you're sending it audio visually you'll see what i mean on this bar graph now if we mix the two liquids together look it's double reinforced at the elbows you cheer up frames for your glasses at better opticians everywhere walk three blocks north then cross the bridge and it's the first building on the right that's the message the message the message the message [Music] so a message can be seen or heard or vote and another important fact about messages is hey i'm gonna say something important may i have a close-up please you see we can control the film you're watching the medium and that affects the message i wanted to be closer to you to let you know that a message is supposed to give information you can include the rest of them now now how are we going to communicate our message about messages well let's [Music] suppose ready ready hi glad you could make it as you know this is the first meeting of the direct action group we're here to work on skit science and posters urging people to clean up the neighborhood hey that's good for the film we're in because skits signs and posters are all different ways of sending messages their media and this film is about messages let's move on okay the first idea i want to communicate is that we should have a special theme that runs through all the skits and signs and everything that's a good idea but it needs a little work you don't like it i do like it i just think it needs more work like i said my dad talks like that needs a little work means he doesn't like it i do like it you don't i do don't do don't emergency emergency there is a communication breakdown [Music] well now let's see what the cause of this breakdown might be oh i think i've spotted the trouble the words the sender used needs a little work don't mean the same thing to the sender as they do to the receiver she doesn't like it since the words don't mean the same thing to the sender as they do to the receiver the message didn't get through as it was meant to there was a communication breakdown but if the sender is aware of the problem he or she may be able to adjust the message one awareness pill should do it let me put it this way i don't think your idea is 100 right but i think it's close and i think we should move in the direction you're suggesting oh i see why didn't you say you liked it before well i would have if i'd known my words didn't mean the same thing to you as they did to me thank you it's so good to communicate with you here's something else that can affect a message hey that's a great idea for a street theater skit we ought to put it on paper we'll take notes i'll do it i'll do it well you both use the same words but your vocal inflections were different were you able to notice the difference i'll do it i'll do it you see your vocal inflections were different enough to change the meaning of your messages you want to do it you don't i'm very perceptive so a person's posture can change a message that's interesting come now class you can make those summary points more interesting than that can't you well we can try posture and movement they make your message change and your inflections things they do are strange [Music] posture and movement and your inflections move [Music] they make your [Music] how important they are but the key to good communication is the message itself what can make a message effective or ineffective listen to bruce we have to get the people's attention and keep it well how in the world are we gonna do that a good question how does a message get and keep attention well we see and hear attention getters every day newspaper headlines arouse our interest this one arouses my interest it makes me want to find out more me too some people use the headline technique in their everyday conversation to get the attention of their manske listeners a terrible experience yesterday you know this quite a headline that really gets my attention in fact i'm all ears advertisers use headlines on television can a detergent be as good for your greasiest dishes as it is for your grimiest clothes advertisers use catchy headlines to interest you in their message for instance does someone have to knock you over the head for you to see that we have to fix up our neighborhood [Music] man that's a good skit it'll get people's attention it probably got your interest too it was humorous and humor is one way to arouse a receiver's interest in your message another way is to move closer to the person you're talking to or you can arouse interest with suspense the ghostly white shape came closer and closer the children ran faster and even faster then from out of the open grave came a low echoing voice that said what did it say and would you believe it it's possible to build interest by taking a new look at something familiar [Music] class all week we've been using this formula to find the perimeters of circles but do you realize we can also use it to find the approximate length of the groove on this photograph record wow so you see there are a number of ways to win a receiver's attention and hold it while you get your message through [Applause] and once the message is getting through you want to give it impact impact watch don't pass it by fix it up don't pass it by clean it up don't pass it by paint it up make our neighborhood a knockout don't let our efforts collapse impact they achieved it by illustrating their ideas by adding humor and through repetition brasilia the turkey coffee brasilia not bad not bad i think the message is almost getting through all it needs now is a little bit more repetition right right did you get our message do you think this message will get through i love you i love you i love you love your lover all that repetition gave his message so much impact to evaluate the impact of another message let's return to the meeting of the direct action committee well houses are okay but we say we want to fix things up you know i mean have you been down by the river and yards are okay but whose things are we talking about i mean what about allies you know what i mean what's his problem i know his message didn't get through but why didn't it i see by it has something to do with the order and arrangement of his ideas you see for effective communication ideas have to follow each other in a particular way a message has to have a logical structure it has to move from point to point in a way that receivers can understand and follow gosh gang give me another chance let me restate my message all right bruce try again so far we've been talking about fixing up houses buildings and yards those are personal properties but we have to get the people to fix up public properties too alleys empty lots and the riverside great bruce a logical structure gets the message through it communicates to everyone who understands the language and that brings up another point a lot of people in the neighborhood understand spanish better than english shouldn't we do our science in spanish too she's right you have to tailor a message to fit the receivers all the receivers messages can be tailored to fit people of different ages do you know what we're going to talk about today we're going to talk about rain snow hail and sleet today we're going to discuss the various forms of precipitation messages can be tailored to fit people with special values and goals you can't have all the money in the world but you can look like a million where luxuria the new synthetic luxury fur luxuria for the rich look of luxury if you're interested in wealth or status that commercial might turn you on and of course this film we're all in is a message the people who made it have tried to tailor it to fit you they've tried to win your attention and maintain your interest lay out points in a logical order and repeat them when necessary have we succeeded in communicating we hope so because if we've been getting through there's one more point about messages we'd like to make [Music] [Music] [Applause] we've gone a little far out but we've done that to share our message with you it's this don't make your message so entertaining that its point gets lost but do use our suggestions about messages to help improve your communication skills [Music] remember messages can help communication wow that was that was kind of crazy um it's almost like the centron punctuation films as far as the zaniness but they just keep the zaniness going and they don't um be labor uh grammar rules um that was kind of nuts and you could see at the end it was cornet films uh but it was don klugman films who actually did the production which is why it was kind of different than uh your normal coronet film even from the 70s standpoint it was it was very wow it was odd so i do have the follow-up film to this communication the receiver but we will not watch that today we'll we'll wait um but i do have behind me uh my scanner film scanner and it's hooked up and so we're gonna watch a folk tale called golden lizard enjoy weird let's try it again [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] many years ago there lived a gentle wanderer named pedro de san miguel he had nothing but the clothes on his back yet nature seemed to provide the food and shelter he needed [Music] [Applause] [Music] you have a blessed day myself what is troubling your heart [Music] what may i call you do you speak my language [Music] my name is juan garcia lopez forgive me i know of nothing for which you must be forgiven i can see that you're a man in need of help may i be of assistance to you senor i i know you are a holy man my family is hungry and we need shelter but i have no money to buy the things we need this is the truth can you help me you help me senor [Music] as you can see i live as one of nature's sparrows never knowing where my next meal will come from and unfortunately i have nothing here to share with you but just a few paces away from here i found a succulent berry bush and back on the desert the cactuses yield a juicy fruit this time but my wife and children [Music] i can see that you need more than would satisfy my legal requirements can you help me senor juan do you have faith faith in what don't move [Music] take this lizard to the village in the valley go to the first shop as you enter the town and tell the shopkeeper that pedro de san miguel gave you this [Music] when she sees this she will provide for your needs until you can earn enough to repay her faith and faith [Music] me [Music] [Applause] so [Music] i i have come to to [Music] on the road i met a man named pedro de san miguel well he gave me something and well he said if i i showed it to you you would what are you to show me well he said if i showed this to you you would provide my family with food and clothes till i could earn enough to repay you let me see what he gave to you i am sorry to be to be of trouble to you senora bring in your family but i have no monies in europe i can wait for my money choose what you wish for my shop [Music] well [Music] oh [Music] perhaps [Music] undoubtedly the finest work i have ever seen it must be worth a fortune how fortunate you are to have pedro de san miguel as a friend what he has given you will make you a rich man people came from all over the province to see juan's golden lizard the mayor felt that juan could be of help to the town senor you can do a great service to this community how is that in your college five years ago you would not recognize this village it was the center of trading for all the valley it was maravilloso in those days this was a deep water well provided water for all the town we were planning to build a school but that was then what happened the rains came less often and in smaller quantities of water people could hardly even farm now there's barely enough water here for the few of us who are left but how can i be of help senor you have wealth you are young i believe the well is still good but we must dig people here have lost faith maybe you are a sign that our fortunes may change [Music] what do you want me to do bueno here is my plan within a few days it was known to all the people in the region that a rich man was willing to pay the cost of digging a new well if no water was found the golden lizard would be sold to pay the workers if water were discovered everyone would share it they were hoping for a miracle [Music] we have a hit rock bottom there's no water here can't we dig deeper there's no using or the rocks will just all are too [Music] if only it would just then maybe the world would get started again we've done all we can say [Music] so [Music] [Music] with the rain the world came to life and the parched land in the valley could again be farmed after a bountiful harvest season the people celebrated [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] this [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Music] in the years that followed maria and juan started a small rancho the golden lizard was never sold juan kept it in his home for all the villagers to see it had inspired them to dig the well it may have helped save the town yet juan felt it truly belonged to the man he met on the trail so many years ago however by now he never expected to see him again [Music] [Music] hola stranger if you have no shelter you are welcome to stay in my home till the storm passes quickly before the sand fills my house [Music] maria a worn drink for our guests you must have had quite a time in the storm huh you've warmed yourself i have a few more tasks to do before i can relax here you are senor is there anything else i can get for you oh no thank you i just need a little rest my husband will prepare a bed for you juan no no por favor i am used to sleeping on the floor if you don't mind i'll just sleep here by the fire [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well i hope you had a comfortable rest buenos dias my wife has prepared a good breakfast for you oh you are so kind but i must be on my way here you can eat this on your journey may god bless you for your hospitality now i must be going our home is your home and your two young children whatever became of them oh they have grown into men they have families of their own [Music] maria where have we seen that man before i don't think i have ever met him yet it is strange he [Music] yeah i get that all right uh yeah uh so let's watch this uh nasa video about structures of flight this is from the lewis space center which is based in ohio which eventually became renamed the john glenn space center enjoy [Music] flight in the air or in space requires propulsion systems able to withstand extremes of mechanical stress vibration and temperatures designing these structures and matching available materials to the job has always been a complicated business and is becoming more solved requiring safety and reliability from structures needing minimum maintenance and having the least possible weight poses a basic contradiction which can be resolved only by the most sophisticated analytic methods the lewis research structures division is dedicated to advancing the state of the art of structures technology for aeronautical space and terrestrial applications the principal product of the division is the development of validated analytic methods to predict the behavior of structural components and systems for aerospace propulsion and power machinery the division provides not only solutions to problems encountered in current applications but also leadership in setting new directions for structures engineering to solve tomorrow's problems today the purpose of the structures division at lewis research center is to develop advanced credible design tools these tools can then be used by designers to design advanced concepts for future missions both in aeronautics and in space we developed these methods for use on high-speed computers and they are validated with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment we can predict the life that is the number of missions that can be flown by the advanced concept and we can optimize the design both from the point of view of minimum weight or from the point of view of lowest cost breakthroughs in flight usually follow developments in propulsion systems in the early days of flight structure's design was a combination of art and trial and error if you were developing a rocket you built an engine derived from earlier designs to be sure it didn't fail you made it sturdier heavier as technology advanced lighter stronger materials and improved manufacturing methods made the impossible possible but mistakes were still made and the results were spectacular and costly failures the job of the structures division is to make sure such accidents will no longer occur they do this by applying the latest scientific analysis possible and by using the most up-to-date testing equipment and methods available to do this the staff of scientists engineers and technicians of the division perform work in structural mechanics structural dynamics fatigue fracture and on projects and applications [Music] some of the work in structural mechanics includes characterizing the properties of metals used in propulsion systems by subjecting specimens to stress and varying temperatures researchers can predict maximum loading and operating temperatures and testing is performed at very high temperatures on materials that will be used as an example researchers in the division sonic map a ceramic disc and send the data to a computer the computer outputs a color simulation showing variations in density defining areas where fractures should occur later the disc is placed in a hydrostatic chamber and fractured the actual fractured disc is then compared to the computer model for verification division researchers also test advanced fiber reinforced composite materials under varied loads expected in aerospace applications data collected from these tests are used to verify mathematical models which describe the material behavior these models are then incorporated into nasa computer codes and used to predict the performance of composite structures in a variety of applications beyond solving the problems which can lead to failures the division provides leadership in developing new concepts and integrating information from many sources for application in areas ranging from windmills to the space shuttle main engines from fuel-efficient propellers to computer codes for production design and propulsion systems simulations the work of the division provides verified mathematical models and computer codes that are key elements of today's computer-based design analyses for flight propulsion systems as well as many other systems with similar problems using the products of the structures division designers can better predict the life of a component by constructing it on the computer thereby saving time and material while preventing costly failure future aerospace systems will require advanced capability onboard computation and real time sensors will combine to make it possible to monitor the health of advanced systems active elements could be included to make it possible to suppress dynamic instabilities structural tailoring to account for local stresses and local hot spots may be the only way to take advantage of the new lightweight high temperature yet very brittle materials computational simulation will allow designers to make rapid affordable and feasible designs probabilistic methods will allow designers to quantify risk and make trade-offs between performance and life combination these capabilities will allow those designers to operate and design closer to the limits such capability will allow us to build systems that we couldn't build before to carry out missions that conceivably couldn't be carried out with the development of these capabilities the structures division hopes to play a major part in bringing them a about combination of experienced in-house staff and facilities in the louis research structures division has been tailored to meet the challenges and needs of the new age of space flight and aviation the work of the division continues to evolve technology and will take us into the next generations of flight [Music] so we uh went into some video um but that this was part of a project i did where i digitized a bunch of video for lewis space center which became john glenn space center this big project we did over 600 tapes and you know everyone saw i want to throw it in there because found footage festival does not distinguish they will certainly show something that was originated from film that's now on video so they will grant me that same uh privilege i think all right so um let's learn learn about army ants um this is a study of social behavior and this is not by moody institute of science we saw um last week two weeks ago probably two weeks ago um uh moody's uh thing about bees where they started off with some of the interesting facts about bees and then they extrapolated about uh morality and ethics and social order um let's see if this uh somehow brings up the bible i don't think it will uh enjoy nomadic marauding tropical american ants whose patterns of behavior have been evolving for more than 50 million years they represent a highly advanced form of social behavior knowledge of which contributes to our general theories of animal behavior so how can we understand the organization of colony life in these ants the scientists way is to make observations in the natural environment to repeat an observation many times and to conduct experimental tests in the field laboratory under controlled conditions over a long period of time following an army ant column in the dim light and tangled growth of the forest is not an easy course but it is the only way to find the home site or bivouac of the colony a colony consists of a queen and many thousands of workers this golden yellow ant is the surface adapted species escyton hematum by clustering together the workers formed the walls and inner structure of the nest with their own bodies no other materials are used except the natural supports to which they cling nearly all the ants hang head downward in the structure opposed double hooks at the end of each leg enable the ants to hold on to different surfaces and to interlock their bodies the bivouac or temporary nest is the place where the study of these insect colonies begins from each vivoc the colony carries out its great raid of the day and emigrates at night how can activities so complexly organized and highly adaptive as these be accomplished by creatures as simple as army ants are in their individual behavior we will start our observations with the beginning of activities in early morning when the first light reaches the bivouac wall it stimulates and excites the ants once aroused the workers begin to leave the cluster for the ground this army ant colony is the species known as ecetan burchelli it too is adapted to live above ground this beverage is about one meter in width in this observation blowing on the bivouac wall excites and agitates the ants wind or rain would have a similar effect causing the bivouac to shift a little each morning workers numbering some hundreds of thousands as in this species swarm from the bivouac to pillage for food on the forest floor as their numbers increase on the ground the ants are pushed ahead by the pressure of those behind the sounds you hear are those of ant birds they eat insects stirred up by the foraging ants their calls are a useful clue for locating an ant swarm during the great exodus from the bivouac at the beginning of the raid the ants swarm out in all directions from the nest gradually this movement turns toward a dominant sector ants coming in from other areas move in columns and connect with the developing swarm or the bivouac as the ants move farther from the bivouac the pattern of the raid takes a roughly triangular or fan-like form with only a single broad column connecting to the bivouac at the height of the raid the ants in the swarm front may cover an area more than 15 meters wide and one to two meters deep they stream along the ground probing under every leaf and in every cranny for practically any living creatures unless very agile few soft-bodied insects escape the fast-moving ants few obstacles in the terrain stand in the way of their attack they advance swiftly across the forest tangle even climbing to the topmost branches of trees capturing their prey whenever an insect such as this katie did is overrun it is torn to pieces so that it can be easily carried by pulling together from all sides the ants dismember their booty they attack anything that moves under the weight of ants most efforts to escape are futile this large and predatory ponnarine ant will be fought stung and then taken apart limb by limb the buzzing of flies of various species is another characteristic sound accompanying a swarm raid by mid-morning the booty-laden ants crowd the principal trail as they move toward the bivwec parts of insects and other arthropods such as eggs larvaes and pupas of wasps and ants are hauled along in the procession how do the ants find their way with all the confusion that seems to exist in these masses of scurrying bodies there are no leaders yet at the height of the raid the ants may be out 90 meters or more from the bivouac here's a simple test that may give us a clue why do the ants stop short when the leaf is removed why do they continue when it is returned doesn't the action indicate that perhaps this is an odor trail and the chemical products on the ground mark the way we will try a similar test with the other ant species again behavior shows that a crucial stimulus has been removed how can the trail be restored from this and other experiments we find that the excited ant leaves a chemical trail on the ground over which it moves once this basic scent is laid down by the first ants that move into new ground sensitivity to chemical stimulation permits others to follow in the rush of two-way traffic from and to the bib whack some booty carriers have a difficult time returning if the ants are forced into moving on outlying trails they often deposit their loads in booty caches these storage areas may contain as much as a gallon of slaughtered food close in toward the bivouac branching trails have disappeared leaving only a principal trail over this now heavily traveled and chemically saturated path laden workers bring food to the brood queen and other inhabitants of the colony at times returning traffic may be dominated by unladen ants they have simply been moving back and forth following the scent of others on the trail this colony is in the statory or non-migratory phase of its nomadic existence during this phase which lasts about three weeks it remains clustered in the same sheltered site while maturing a pupil brood and undergoing early reproductive stages of a new brood what is the nature of the population living in this bivouac to find out we will take a sample for later study in the laboratory swirling the bag rolls the ants into a ball which can be poured into an observational frame one important section of the population is the brood it is present in any functional colony here is a small part of a brood in the pupil stage attended by workers in each colony there is one fertile queen who is the source of the immense brood depending on the species she may lay sixty thousand to two hundred thousand eggs in each reproductive period all workers are infertile females and all are polymorphic that is they differ in both size and form in this species they range from three millimeters to thirteen and a half millimeters in length majors are the largest workers intermediate workers are the most numerous they do the largest part of the effective rating minims the smallest workers spend most of their time tending the small brood within the bivouac size appears to depend upon the order in which the eggs are hatched and the amount of food which larvas receive the first larvaes to begin feeding receive the most food and grow to be majors they are characterized by their enormous heads and large sickle-shaped mandibles these needle sharp jaws together with potent sting are enough to keep most intruders away minims the last to hatch are fed the least amount of food the statory phase of colony behavior ends when a brood of new young workers emerges from the cocoons now the nomadic phase begins with daytime raids ending in nighttime emigrations to new nesting sites photography was possible only with battery-powered lights in late afternoon exodus from the bivouac begins as the excitement mounts ants hooked into the bivouac wall are released by the departure of other ants as the cluster gradually breaks down they pour from the nest and emigration begins over a raiding trail developed during the day late raiders returning to the bivouac are forced to change direction by the outgoing rush of traffic these immigrants are moving their own larvaes together with booty during most of the year successive broods contain only developing workers the ants carry the larvas and booty in their jaws slung under their bodies size of the workers roughly determines the size of the loads they carry except that majors never seem to carry anything they often appear to get in the way of others at the beginning of the dry season a bisexual brood of a great many males and a few young queens develops here the workers are carrying the very large male larvaes of the sexual brood in rough sections of the trail the column crosses on bridges made up of the bodies of clustered workers the large ants running in the column are winged males development of a sexual brood of new queens and winged males leads to a splitting of the colony into two new ones an important part of population control in army ants this emigration will be complete only when the entire colony is settled in a new place these ants are entering and adding to the structure of the new bivouac bib wax are not sheltered but are usually out in the open in the nomadic phase emigration such as this go on every night for more than two weeks usually before midnight a change in the character of the moving column indicates passage of the queen and her party she moves slowly under her own power through the masses of workers that surge over and around her but why do the workers respond so excitedly to her presence is this a chemical effect also let's try another laboratory test in this frame two circular areas have been marked a queen has been resting on one of these areas for one hour the other is our control now we remove the queen and her confining cover opening the closed tube-like tunnel permits the ants to enter within a short period of time it is clear that the workers are strongly attracted to their queen's odor in this test note how the workers follow the queen in a circular column and how the queen responds to the chemical trail much as does a worker now we will return a queen to the natural environment by releasing her close to a raiding column of her colony slowly a few workers are attracted to her order the many that follow and cluster over her indicate that the queen's odor is a central factor in colony unity if the queen had not been returned brood developments and consequently the nomadic function of the colony would end without a queen the colony can survive only by fusion with another colony of the same species these scenes of army ants in action illustrate how methods of field and laboratory research have been used to study problems of insect social behavior research on the swarm raids for example reveals how complex mass actions are organized through group interactions of relatively simple individuals perhaps the most remarkable finding about tropical army ants concerns the nomadic statory cycles shown by species adapted to surface life a colony is nomatic when it is stimulated to a high pitch by its active brood in the larval condition it is statory in the intervening time when the brood is in its pupil stage as brood follows brood through the year each colony passes through these successive cycles there are other kinds of army ants whose patterns of life are not as well known as those you have seen many species which nest underground as does labidis predator present important behavioral problems for future investigation and then it just ends wow that film had it all that was kind of nuts um i want to play shake hands with danger
