[Music] [Music] this special Aeronautics and Space report brought to you by NASA Mariner Maps entire Martian surface pioneer halfway to Jupiter surveying our earth's resources new advances in aeronautics and the last two Apollo flights to the moon 1972 a year of significant achievement these are the highlights [Music] the mysterious red planet Mars is not nearly as puzzling as it used to be thanks to this spacecraft Mariner 9 Mariner 9 orbited Mars continuously for more than half a Martian year probing sensing and photographing as the seasons changed below these are some of the things we've learned Mars has been geologically active with volcanic mountains there are indications that free flowing water may have existed sometime in past Martian history observed from above were huge impact craters and windblown dunes the more than seven thousand pictures returned by Mariner have enabled scientists to map the entire Martian surface and pinpoint landing sites for the unmanned vikings scheduled to soft land there in 1976 [Music] Jupiter a thousand times larger than Earth distinguished by glowing yellow orange and blue grey stripes it appears to have its own internal energy source and is so massive that it is almost a small star we launched a spacecraft toward Jupiter called pioneer 10 it's still a quarter of a billion miles away from this largest planet in our solar system as it flies by Jupiter in late 1973 its cameras and sensors will return the first pictures and data ever recorded at such a close range this is what the orbiting astronomical observatory named Copernicus looked like before it was launched last August equipped with sensitive precision instruments including a 32 inch diameter telescope this heaviest of our unmanned spacecraft is studying stars and galaxies to gain a better understanding of how they evolve and eventually die now in orbit above the Earth's distorting atmosphere Copernicus has a clear view of the Stars and is returning important new information to astronomers every day in cooperation with the Italian government NASA orbited another in the Explorer series of spacecraft the small astronomy satellite was launched from a platform in the Indian Ocean to study Earth's Sun interactions and especially search for gamma-ray sources [Music] eighty-four sounding rockets were launched from NASA's Wallops Island station in Virginia and other sites with payloads to study phenomena affecting the Earth's atmosphere these small relatively inexpensive rockets are telling us a lot about near-earth space below the region where satellites orbit a comprehensive program to study and make better use of our Earth's resources is in full swing high altitude planes and the new earth resources technology satellite are returning thousands of high-quality pictures of the earth as a result scientists hope to better understand our planet its forests crops geology and pollution a new Nimbus research and development weather satellite is taking the first vertical temperature readings from space through clouds it is also monitoring a mysterious disappearing current off the west coast of South America and thermally mapping the Earth's surface so geologists can better understand what's happening below the crust [Music] to commercial communication satellites were launched for the communication satellite corporation adding new telephone and television channels both craft become part of the global communication satellite network the a in NASA stands for Aeronautics with a wide range of projects underway for example this airplane is equipped with a digital computer that was developed for the flight control system of the Apollo Lunar Lander its use in planes of the future should make air travel smoother and safer many aeronautical problems are studied in NASA wind tunnels without having to test full-sized planes engineers can for instance test a tail or wings section to destruction knowing in advance where structural weaknesses are makes it possible to design out many problems before the first plane is manufactured to help relieve airport congestion nasa's test flying short takeoff and landing planes like this one stole planes as they are called need very little runway to either take off or land and may play an important role in providing convenient short haul intercity transportation research is continuing to make presently operating commercial jet aircraft engines quieter and also to develop the technology for a new quieter engine less noisy takeoff and landing procedures are another area of study much of this work is being done by NASA's Lewis Research Center in Cleveland and the Ames Research Center near San Francisco 14 times the wingless m2 lifting body was dropped over a dry lake desert near the Flight Research Center in California craft like the m2 are forerunners of the reusable space shuttle that will fly a space mission then returned to Earth landing like an airplane [Music] during his visit to Russia President Nixon signed an agreement with Chairman Kosygin of the USSR to conduct an earth orbital rendezvous and docking in 1975 between a US and a Russian spacecraft engineers from both countries have already begun working out the details of the mission to help pave the way for the longest Skylab mission next year astronauts Crippen Thornton and Bob Coe spent 56 days locked in a 20 foot long altitude chamber at the manned spacecraft Center Houston the purpose was to collect medical data which can be compared with that collected from the real Skylab flights Skylab crew training and spacecraft assembly and testing is also well underway Skylab will be this country's first space station it will be used as a platform to study the Sun the earth and man himself Apollo 16 with astronauts Young Mattingly in Duke and Apollo 17 with astronauts Cernan Evans and Schmidt marked the fifth and sixth times Americans landed on the moon these two flights also concluded the Apollo program but as astronaut Eugene Cernan said before Apollo 17 it's not the end but the beginning [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this special report brought to you by NASA the National Aeronautics and Space Administration hello everybody I'm skipper alzheimer of ATX welcome to another lunch streaming event we are well into our eighth week of doing this thanks for showing up and eating some food and watching some films so a short little story that last film was part of my collection 1972 NASA highlights there is a it's a s our Aeronautics Space report every year NASA would do that and they've been doing that since the 50s and so this was I think 1972 s version of that so this would be something that would be sent out for the general public to consume I have a little bit of a history with NASA at one point in my life I was tapped to help digitize all of NASA's film and video that project imploded did not happen but I went to a couple of Space Center's I talked to people I went to Langley which is in Virginia your Norfolk I went to Goddard which is in Maryland I went to the headquarters and I was gonna go the other ones and we ran out of money but I did get a bunch of stuff sent to me from the John Glenn Space Center like 600 videotapes which I digitized I also scanned a bunch of films from a local alumni alumnus of NC State who actually did PR for NASA one of the Space Center's and ended ended up digitizing probably a hundred films for them so I have a lot of NASA materials so if you're interested we could start put a date some NASA material to the next even stuff that was video originating because there's some interesting stuff that kind of came out over the years I'm a real NASA head this is this project I was planning on spending five years just completely just traveling the United States and going to all the space centers and this was my attempt my only attempt of being even close to being an astronaut is to look at all this material and there's so much material it's outrageous how much material there is but an even stuff that will never make it to the National Archives even at Langley that was stuff that was very old because Langley existed before NASA existed back when it was just a VA ssin research and so there was footage there of early aviation experiments and language also is supposedly the only NASA base that has a bar and I never got a chance to go to that bar I really wanted to anyhow you know maybe at one point I'll be able to do that have a mixed selection of stuff to show today as always this next film is a self-defense film for women called attack and what's fascinating about this is you know not making like of the fact that let me get attacked but the fact that this woman showing the different techniques her victim or the person that her attacker is being attacked and you can kind of see him kind of giggle a little bit during this I actually got contacted by the woman at some point and I'll talk a little bit more about that after we watch attack you have just seen a woman and robbed on the street she may be badly injured she may even be dead these attacks occurred dozens of times each day on the streets of America belts are injury rape or murder the least consequence of such attack is loss of personal property but that is serious enough some attacks on women are so surprising so brutal so suddenly complete that nothing can be done at the time but many attacks on women can be repulsed if only the victim knows one or two simple means to defend herself during the following minutes we intend to look at the problem of attacks on lone women and a few of the ways to defend oneself as the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Taft Broadcasting Company show how women can defend themselves from attack [Music] more and more the newspapers and news programs contain stories of assaults on women we all know the various results of such attacks we hear and read about them every day an alarming fact is that these crimes are on the increase and assaults on women robbery rape murder are not limited to the hours after dark true most attacks take place then but some daring or more insane attackers strike in broad daylight I'm Glen rile I don't pretend to be an expert on how a woman can defend herself but during the research and study for this program we've learned many simple ways for women to ward off the techies I don't think you'll like what we suggest we suggest you be violent we suggest you try to injure another person specifically your attacker to most of us inflicting injury is distasteful but if you are attacked and do not defend yourself you will become a victim a victim of injury or death we've been listed the aid of women who are experts in this field and with their help we'll show you a few defense tricks that any woman can easily do let's go back to the beginning of our program the woman walking along the street is mrs. barbara dimetric married and mother of two children she's five foot five and weighs a scant 100 pounds mrs. dimetric is a brown belt karate student and along with her husband our Covington Kentucky police officer and recognized self-defense expert she has been active in demonstrating and training women to defend themselves it's important to point out here that the moves we are about to see are not karate or judo these are simple intended to ward off or disable an attacker and require no high degree of skill or training during the first scene missus dimetric did nothing to defend herself this is all too often what women do this time she'll take action that's much different than the first time let's see it once more and have Barbara tell us what she's doing when the man grabs me from behind I kicked back with my foot to his leg then down trying to rake his shin with my shoe or heel by pushing down hard his leg will guide my foot directly to his instep and whether the heel is spiked or flat a hard blow to the instep will almost always force a man to let go when he does let go I can run or scream or hit him with something a purse is very good for this a large woman's purse is usually quite heavy and a good roundhouse blow with one will knock down most men that's an easy but effective action to take against assault don't practice it on your husband but keep it in mind and above all don't forget the stream the one thing that most sleek attackers want is silence a good long ear piercing spring will frighten many away our there are other ways to fight an attack from behind a sharp jab with the elbow is painful and causes an involuntary reaction on the part of the one who receives it the main trouble women have when they try some physical action is that they don't put enough into it with the elbow jab put every ounce of weight and bit of muscle you can muster behind it make the blow quick and hard and as often is not you'll break some ribs that really puts a man out of action then scream for help and run Barbara says a woman should scream if she's attacked we can't put too much emphasis on this one's simple defense greens greens green it might bring help and help for you put an end to your attacker every human being has a number of vulnerable areas one of the tenderest is the eyes you may think you couldn't intentionally try to harm someone's eyes but remember you may be fighting for your life and anything goes when your life is at stake whenever anybody comes at you from behind it's always best if you can turn to meet him face to face from the front it's very hard for a man to get his hand over your mouth you can scream and you're in position to use your best natural woman's weapon the finger nails that caddy expression I'll scratch your eyes out should be literally true in this situation use those fingernails and go for the eyes scratch and dig in hard scratch and scream to natural actions for women unfortunately far too few women do either when they're molested or attacked other scratching takes a little effort but what about the screen what if the man has his hand over your mouth bite that's the best fight just as hard as you can the thought of it may bring a smile to some lips but I guarantee the man you bite won't think it's funny if you bite hard you'll pull his hand away then you can scream as loud and as long as you wish we've been discussing ways to ward off an attack if one occurs the best thing of course is to never be attacked the answer to that is easy never go anyplace at least never go anyplace home whatever possible travel with a friend even if it's a trip of only a few blocks to the grocery now this is especially true at night practically never will two women be attacked by a lone man if you must go out alone at night try to be prepared avoid dark streets even if it takes you some distance out of your if you're in a car keep the windows up and the doors locked and don't park in some out-of-the-way dark place you still have to get to and from your car in strange or rough neighborhoods equip yourself with some weapon that you can use if you are assaulted a weapon in the hand that might be seen by some would-be attacker will often scare him off he knows you're prepared you'll be harder to surprise and surprise is one of his weapons when it comes to weapons just look in your purse the average woman's purse is full good tools for fighting off an attacker first and foremost a nail file sharp and strong it can be used like a knife a jab or two with this is not only painful but can be disabling a lipstick grinded into his eyes a comb raked across the eyes and nose it acts like a saw a pencil or a pen anything with a sharp point that you can poke or jab with or you might even want to prepare an envelope of cayenne pepper thrown in the eyes it burns and causes temporary blindness remembering any of these things might save your life sometimes a man will attack from the front when this happens a woman has a much better chance of fighting back if someone grabs you from the front get your hands and arms up this gives you more leverage and you can wedge them in between you and push away get those fingernails working and scream if a man does succeed in grabbing you from the front use your knee pull your knee up into his stomach or groin use all the force you can gather it's a bit more difficult in the tight skirt and the skirt might get torn but this is no time to be ladylike and delicate so use force all you can as Phillips by men on unsuspecting women are on the increase oh this is a crime it is very difficult for the police to prevent there are rarely advance indications that such crimes will take place and it's impossible for any police force understaffed as they are to be everywhere at the same time one point we must impress on you is your ability to defend yourself if only you will make the effort too often a woman considers her situation hopeless and makes no movers found to defeat her attacker remembering that none of these moves we have shown require any high degree of skill let's take another look at them this time in slow motion the first move mrs. dimetric showed us was kicking back breaking the shin with her shoe or heel and then down on to the instep simple painful to the attacker and more than likely will get you free the second was the elbow jab don't forget Barbara's advice about put everything you have into any action make the blow quick and sharp you'll probably break a few of the man's ribs that may not sound nice but it's all the better for you she advises you to turn and face your attacker a twisting motion is hard to stop and when you're face to face with the man you're in position to use that natural woman's weapon of fingernails scratch and dig in hard and don't forget the screen scratch and three if his hand goes over your mouth bite just as hard as you can we showed you some weapons weapons that can be found in the purse of women the nail file use it like a knife to stab with a pencil or a pen anything with a sharp point use it the same way a comb great to cross the eyes or an envelope of pepper to throw in his eyes any of these things might save your life finally missus dimetric demonstrated a knee in the groin this is especially disabling to a man and once again be violent use all the force you can muster and with this as with any other defense action streams drain any or all of these actions may be unpleasant to you because they inflict harm to another but in cases of attack there is no action too violent for a woman to use in defense we must repeat women you can defend yourselves if nothing else you can scream that's our hope that the examples of self-defense seen on this program will be a help to any woman who might be assaulted in the future if you can remember only as small parts of what we've shown here it might save you from much agony it might even save your life we urge you to consider what we've and said and to look further into what you might do to protect yourself and others from the perils of robbery rape or murder [Music] you so friends of mine actually sampled that for a their band they had a song called scratch and scream and so every time I hear those samples it kind of makes the hairs in the back of my neck stick up um so anyways I got a an email back in 2014 from somebody who was like where did you get this film I'm interested in it because I know the people in it and I was like oh tell me more so he basically said that it was hosted by WKRC in Cincinnati who did it because in the mid-sixties a rapist was loose in Cincinnati I also think that this is also when the serial killer killed all the nurses that it was around that time as well I'm not I found my serial killer names sorry so many ways he knew Barbara and her husband Dmytryk they actually had a karate studio in Covington which is right across the border from Cincinnati which is still in operation and so I posted on the comments in YouTube and Facebook a link to a photo of both Barbara and her husband circa 2000s supposedly during the film the husband whose name was Bill bill said that when they were doing these demonstrations because they would do these demonstrations around or women's groups and things like that that he said that Barbara would always kick the crap out of him especially the knee kick and the purse swinging the guy who wrote me and started taking karate in 1972 from Bill so anyways the Barbara actually reached out to me and after I sent her a DVD and sent me a book she has like autobiography about her training in this whole the whole experience with the karate because they supposedly had a specific school of karate but they brought from Japan that they were practicing and training so this is why I like to collect films and then put them online and show them because people reach out and I find out more information about who people are and what they did and the backstories behind the film so I love when that happens this next film is is also an assault as actually it's a date so it's how to have a date actually and how to the etiquette there's a couple of films that I have to talk about dining etiquette and it's almost always aimed towards women girls and how to go to a restaurant but also guys are involved in it as well trying to teach manners you think about dating now well dating recently it's you know it's not really about manners so here is date for dinner enjoy [Music] dating now okay bring menus for heaven sake you staying home for a change well I'm always home you know that and I know why you're here big date coming up maybe well I'm Kate and Cathy are in the dining room and Kate you remember my friend Linda Taylor why yes how do you do Linda I'm happy to see you thank you mrs. Jefferson it's nice to see you again I understand you have a big date Saturday yes I do and Cathy tells me you're a little upset well oh Linda there's really no need to be upset over how you should act may I ask you something sure mrs. Jefferson were you self-conscious when Jerry helped you with your coat golly no he always does when he's here and because you're comfortable with him you're not self-conscious isn't that right well it threw me the first time you did it really Jerry go on so there's the secret right there Linda the more often you do something the easier it is now what we're going to do is practice right here with you Kathie and Jerry first we'll set the table I'll need your help Cathy you get the placemats and Jerry you get the menus they're in the living room let's practice from the beginning now this will be the head checkstand you take over there Cathy and Linda you and Jerry put your coats on and enters from the kitchen [Music] the gentleman holds the door for the girl and lets her precede him into the restaurant they both go to the Hat check stand where it is proper if the girl desires for her to check her coat or she can keep her coat and drape it over her chair back after she is seated you wait at the entrance of the dining room for the hostess to guide you to your table the hostess goes first then the girl and the man follows usually the hostess will indicate the chair that provides the most desirable view for the girl sit down slowly to give your escort a chance to slip your chair up to the table if you're still too far away from the table rise slightly so we can push the chair closer don't just plop in the chair and expect him to lift you and the chair to the table he may not be a weightlifter a restaurant will provide more silver than you usually find on your dinner table at home and its place so you more or less work from the outside in toward your plate as the courses are served there is usually a soup spoon a coffee spoon and a dessert spoon then a butter knife and knife to cut your meat now on the other side you have your salad fork and your regular fork naturally you will carry a small purse that rests easily in your lap because you never put your purse on the table you immediately unfold your table napkin not all the way just half way so the fold is toward you then look at the menu you will have ample time to study the menu and you may ask about any dish that has a name you menus are nothing to be confused about once you become familiar with them notice that there are two price lists one for ala carte and one for table d'hote which is the complete dinner the left-foot items which means you receive only the entrée portion of the table d'hote the entree is the main course and Alucard includes only the main course potatoes salad bread-and-butter and sometimes a vegetable if you order ala carte the appetizer coffee and dessert cost extra [Music] the right side of the menu is for the table d'hote this cost more you will usually find several appetizers listed to choose from some of them you drink others will be served with their own spoons or cocktail Forks with which to eat them if there is no price beside it that means the appetizer is included with the price of the dinner and you choose only one if you choose one that has a price beside it the cost of it will be added even to a complete dinner after the appetizer the waitress will bring soup soup d'azyr translated literally means soup of the day and it's perfectly alright to ask what is the soup du jour you might not want to order soup if it's a kind you don't care for [Music] after choosing your entree or meat course you will have a choice of salad dressings so make up your mind whether you want french qilin vinegar garlic or Roquefort avoid using a knife to cut your salad it's preferable to use a pork you also have a choice of vegetables and you will be asked how you want your potatoes usually baked whipped french fried or cottage fried you cut one bite-sized portion of meat and finish eating it before cutting more if there is gravy left and you would like to eat it you may do so by putting a small piece of bread down on the gravy and then eating it with your fork as if it were any other helping on your plate most people prefer to wait and have coffee with their dessert when you've stirred the sugar and cream into your coffee be sure to put the spoon on the saucer it's bad manners to leave your spoon in the cup the same rule applies after you have finished your dessert if it is the kind served in a sherbet dish which has its own serving plate like ice cream fruit or gelatin your escort will give your order to the waitress and a well trained waitress seldom if ever asked the girl a direct question if she should however common courtesy demands that you answer has a little garlic in it will that be all right - with French dressing after the waitress takes your order she leans in the meantime you might like to have one of the rolls the waitress or busboy brought when you first sat down always break off a small portion of the roll butter and eat that before breaking off more you never cut a roll with your knife and if an accident occurs it's not the end of the world anyone can have this happen if you drop something you just leave the item on the floor and let one of the restaurant employees pick it up later in the meantime your escort will wait until your waitress is within easy hearing distance to say waitress yes we dropped a fork here could we have another one please of course sir at no time does he raise his voice nor tap a glass with silverware to attract her attention if he can't locate the waitress the hostess will notice and come to help when you finished your meal you may blot your lips lightly with your napkin avoid staining the table napkin with lipstick do not refold the napkin simply place it unfolded beside your plate although a minimum of makeup repair is permitted at the table your date probably would prefer confine all face fixing to the powder room in which case you say will you excuse me please [Music] your escort will take care of the check leaving a tip for the waitress equal to perhaps 15% of the bill [Music] he does not tip the hatcheck girl until you retrieve your coats then he may leave 15 cents or so for each coat that's all there is to it Linda easy isn't it it's all in knowing how I'll get it I think practicing this way is a good idea and Jerry I enjoyed the dinner well are you sure a big eater oh the phone calls for you Linda me thank you give me okay sis give me back my ordinary kind of pleasant summer's day of course there was a workday for some people take a good look at this woman what would you say typical American housewife a kind with no health from the house full of kids I guess so by the end of the day she won't seem so typical but at a while you'll see why a very youngest her name is Shirley Shirley just had a birthday and this is her very favorite birthday toy I ask you to take a long look at Shirley - this is going to be a big day for sure a very big deal but she doesn't know that yes here's another gal we'd like you to meet a girl in a hurry she's got an appointment and she can't be late sometimes when you're in a hurry you forget this girl found out let's get back to the park after all it's summer Anna parks a good place to be in this woman there's Jill there's Eddie where's Mike looks like Mike's found a friend her name is Sally she thinks Mike's a pretty cool character this might have been a real serious thing if it hadn't been for what happened that day that summer day but like the song says it's all over now this is the last time she'll say goodbye to and without searching looking around [Music] so here we are nothing to drama in this and how well it was composed and just little kids running up to the mother who's putting clothes on the clothesline and her realizing something is wrong and just yeah super amazing you know obviously this was created to perhaps show the dangers of the joyriding but you know I don't know if it would have been shown to teens or as much to just civic leaders and people in general because the mess there's a couple of messages here one message is don't leave your keys in your car and we see the woman going like oh where's my keys and I think we even see like a bumper sticker that says you know about locking up your car and I so I feel like that's an easier population to address is the and also that's it's tugging at the heartstrings of parents who you know would have a kid that could potentially be at risk it's harder teenagers are such a hard audience they are invincible in any like super over-the-top message like this they just kind of tune out so that's my take as why they made this film is that this was actually aimed towards adults who had the cars so this next film I love this film because I saw a long time ago and found eventually found a copy but it's always my idea that some science experiments are actually just practical jokes and so this is a wonderful film called living in a reverse world which basically shows what happens if somebody wears glasses that reverses everything and talks about the brains coping with that but also it's just they mess with this guy so bad so here's living in a reverse world versus everything and it is not at all easy to explain why you should perceive the motion picture screen to be in front of you images nothing but images are given to us by the eye no one can tell from an image where the thing is if I look at you through it to this way and then again this way the picture in my eye is the same nevertheless this way I see you in front of me and this way on my right how is this possible because I feel at once the different positions of my head and eyes in relation to the rest of my body what we take to be seeing really depends on another sense the body sense or touch in early childhood it was hard to learn to coordinate seeing and touching they cooperate with one another if one is not lightheaded but a few drinks are all that is needed to break up the proper coordination of feeling and seeing the simplest way to break up the cooperation of seeing and touching is a mirror looking into a mirror one sees in front what is really behind and therefore one reaches in the wrong direction but the sensation of touch produces a kind of reversal of seeing here is a wet sponge slapped on his back now he feels as if he had eyes in the back of his head it is similar when you feel things in this way in this case the fingers the sense organs are in front of you but nevertheless the touched object is immediately perceived as behind now for the second experiment the eyes perceive right and left with the help of the body sense a mirror prism like this makes a world in which right and left are reversed moreover everything tilts when you turn your head but with other things one notices the reversal screen to be in front of you what a great film I have another version of this experiment might actually have two versions of it one done by dr. erwin moon of the moody institute of science owned by the Moody Bible Institute where he does it he wears the glasses maybe it's in they could be in one of the bell science series the weird thing about the film we just saw is it was printed backwards so basically they got the silent footage and then somebody either as a joke or just didn't realize printed it backwards when they added the sound the sound was a separate thing so they took raw footage from this you know in in Vienna and they added a soundtrack in the United States an English soundtrack that kind of explained what was happening but they mess with that guy so much I mean the idea of like doing the test if like here have this water which is obviously beer so you have a glass of beer and he reaches for it and what's the other thing it's a cactus and then they give him the beer that he drops it they show him falling down I mean it's totally played for laughs here and then like when he takes his glasses off they totally mess with it by having an upside-down room it's oh great love that film I mean it has some science concepts in it that are fascinating but yeah I've totally played for laughs some of the best experiments are actually jokes practical jokes thanks everybody for
