all right there we go having some weird Behavior Uh since the after dark show uh with equipment not quite working the way it used to I guess that's what happens anyways hi I'm skip belzheimer welcome to the Ava Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and comment on them and that last film was made in 1928 it was called man and uh with a title like that you're like where are we gonna go with this um and so we went to a bunch of uh microscopic uh footage and footage of the anatomy and man we went all over the place with this uh it's it's kind of interesting that they pick such a generic name for something that was so skewed towards biology and biological functions um so behind me I have a film scanner film scanner and I've moved the web camera to a different place because I'm hoping that I'll have more eye contact and less of me kind of looking like this um but it may or may not work anyways so on the scanner I have a 16 millimeter film and the title is this is very provocative title I don't know anything about this film it's called but first this message so enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] we're in the process of seeing television become the top factor in a child's development at least as far as time consumption the Nielsen television index reveals that preschool children that is children between the ages of three and five watch television by the time he gets to be age five he has spent more time in front of the television set and the average college student spends in the classroom getting his liberal arts degree later on when he's in school after age five he usually watches television about one-fourth to one half of his waking time the only thing that exceeds television during this period as far as a time consumer is sleep I think Sigmund Freud once said if you give me a child for the first six years of his life he will be mine Ever After there's some cereal on television so I have cereal well the first time I watched it I had a nightmare when I just started to watch it made me scary like if I had just watched the real scary movie after afterwards I'd probably be thinking about oh what if it what if it was what if it wasn't a television show what if it really came in and then I'd probably just put the covers over my head he will drift pull me down and then die me and I won't be did I just will stand up again to to kill somebody do you think it's good yeah and there's a little boy who's fighting on them but I'm not I always shoot shoot shoot for um I feel like I have to watch some more like if you choose the unfold you um don't like to eat you just take like one a day we'll see commercial but Wonder Bread and I said if you eat a piece of Wonder Bread you grow big and last two years old I used to think that and then he bought so it was my mother brought some Wonder Bread and I ate a piece and then grow big because we've had other experiences we filter out those things which are not consistent or violently opposed other experiences the kids don't have the same background they're in the sense forming their values and their experiences children don't make the same kind of logical operations as do it as do adults they don't discount the fact that that that the advertisement that the advertiser is trying to put his product in the best light that that's a bit propagandistic and so forth a child sees what is presented on the ad and simply that's what the product is he very much wants it although he can't make the decision to buy it he's got to just pressure his parent into it uh and then I think one of the real tragedies about it is that once he gets the product that he that he's asked for and it doesn't work the way he's been told it should work or will work uh he blames himself he thinks that he he was wrong not the advertiser because he doesn't understand the whole the whole purpose behind advertising presumably the purpose is to inform the public hi kids what's this trick and what have we here Jiffy Pop popcorn pops right in its own fan it's the Magic Treat that's fun to make and fun to eat yeah it's great that sounds good sure it's Magic Pot The Magic Tree has much fun to make as it is to eat dream of beauty queen dawn has a new and fabulous beauty pageant of her very own and all of Dawn's other friends you've been collecting can compete too if you put sweet pebbles in your mouth you'll never have rocks in your head we're gonna play we'll be eating in the honeycomb hideout every day what's this place needs is more uh cheeseburgers the cheeseburgers hey fell a little sculptures food in the whole wide world is Beefaroni the first ready to eat gel dessert in a take-a-long pack wow hero a kiss yikes oh phew I'd rather have Gordon trusted and let her wrist across the water [Music] they're all gone Bonnie with the Franklin Stone section toy inside the specially marked Barn oh let's go can't they make up their mind I can't help it oh different prehistoric monsters Pony tiger says pour your frosted flakes so now everyone can join in the fun at Burger King to get your long play Pinocchio record send the dollar to Shasta all you do is add milk you're the pilot you control them without batteries of power listen to them scream someone could get hurt most ads for children's toys and television show a group of kids together having an absolutely unbelievable ball my child's really enjoying himself with a toy uh our belief is it most adults don't even understand his involvement you see because he's really you know people are usually not euphoric when they're adults when they're reading something they're really involved in it and the and this is not uh I mean it's and the toy is also always kind of shown on television as the Entertainer it's not having a interaction with a child a child's watching it so it's the nature of a lot of the kinds of toys they're doing everything's over dramatized well so you're limited by the amount of time that you have so they've got only 60 seconds they've got to show the most euphoric 60 seconds possible and the most uh and everything's condensed you see this is also I think one of the reasons that they are that the children's television commercials are as bad as they are but it's the whole dishonesty this idea to use the child as the salesman I mean that's absolutely outrageous and the kid says You Gotta Buy me this kid doesn't even know what it is I know this is from my uh nephews for instance that they say well buy me this one this week I don't know what it is but the guy said on television by me so they're you know and it's the only product like that I mean you don't see other ideas for adults and ads for soap we go back to the soap thing you don't hear go tell your husband to buy you this soap you know to do that because you know lady's got money in their pocket bike so kids hope kid is helpless six seven-year-old he doesn't have 7.99 his pockets 14.99 or whatever dad can I have this I lost my mom if I could buy it I keep begging her you know I just really I just like the time like to keep begging and then when it comes on when I see it on TV again I show it to her and then she'll probably say no like my mother she would get annoyed at me sometime because I just saw all kinds of toys on TV and I would just want them because I saw but I didn't really want them it's actually gonna be neat and cool it looked like it was fun on TV so it was on TV it looked like it would work so good and when she opened the box on Christmas it it didn't look like the game that you've seen on TV it doesn't feel like what you've seen on TV I went over to our house and and I spanked it and it didn't cry That's What I Call going from back to worse hey what's for dinner the vast majority of children's programming is it best very neutral and has minimal benefits and minimal effects as far as the child's intellectual development and stimulation specific examples of poor programming I think can be seen in snatches on television on Saturday morning in which monsters devour people or children watch adults assaulting each other and really bizarre and extreme manner the cartoons which are a main feature are quite variable there are some of them that I think are done beautifully and there are others at the other end of the scale where they they give the adult the impression that they're kind of lulling the children into a kind of stupor where they watch them there isn't anything that's not predictable there isn't anything in the way of wit there isn't any beauty there isn't there's nothing there but an appeal to the lowest common denominator of a young child and it bothers you to watch that it bothers me anyway you're able to leave haunted houses [Music] creepers [Music] quick get in the maximobile I think the commercial interest typically has to be reduced or taken off of children's television I think there would lock it in now to a very narrow approach because they're not really interested in appealing to the child and teaching him even in entertaining him in terms of his needs and abilities to comprehend the entertainment what they're interested in is holding on to his attention and there's a very easy way to hold on to a child's attention by presenting a lot of action a lot of movement bright colors bright pictures these will hold a child's attention for for a period of time but children watch an immense amount of television and and to hold their attention with this path with this gibberish well why do they do it because they want to hold it they want to hold attention to the broadest span of children that they can they're not really interested in teaching the child they're interested in holding his attention long enough to show him a commercial message it's the big wheel sound of Power with speed enough to Burge [Music] adjustable seat you ride low and neat look at that big wheel Orange foreign lovely lady and Linda those are all l words programs on non-commercial television combining most of the good qualities in children's programming that is Amusement interest stimulation a concern for the child as an individual an attempt to reach them as a person whether that's consistent with the advertiser's interest is a real question may really be that the advertiser's interest is not in terms of improving quality if that means reducing the number of children who will watch those programs television programming has not been specifically to various developmental levels of children but rather is designated to catch with quote child market end quote that is the criteria for success is keeping the child in front of the television set and I might say parenthetically so that he will be available when the commercials come on and receive the real message which is being brought across 1971 oh man what's going on what's going on hold on things all whacked out there I am uh I was five but man I watched some TV certainly watched some TV uh so I love watching films like this they talk about the the dangers of watching too much television and uh especially programming that was aimed towards children I mean it's outrageous like I wrote a article about sugar bear with a film professor and we talked about the history of sugar bear as far as marketing the children and uh sugar bear and specifically uh uh super or sugar crisp cereal was one of the first uh cereals that successfully marketed to hold on it's very frustrating all right let's try this sorry everybody um it was one of the uh cereals that successfully marketed to kids and kids then uh basically nag their parents and their mom to buy stuff and they realized like wow this is a very viable market and the entire cereal industry was based on that and uh one of the factors of it was that um they would show uh cereal commercials would show kids with lots of friends being very popular and also having super strength and so the Federal Trade Commission intervened a couple of times to basically say like no you can't say that you can't have commercials that infer that so um anyways it's fascinating uh and I we talked about it uh it was a found footage Festival um their Saturday morning cartoon show uh where we talked about cereal uh all right it is time for this whacked out animation Pandora's Box enjoy [Music] thank you [Laughter] [Laughter] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] foreign foreign [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] foreign we're gonna try this again uh with a different webcam see if this works there I am never dull moment here um yeah so that was awesome and it could have been a student project it could have been calarts animation um it seems like they were showing off a lot of different uh aspects could have been a final project um pretty great uh let's see what do we got here oh yeah okay um one of the things that I collect is old Venero disease films films about uh sexually transmitted diseases or STIs I think is what they're called now it's actually transmitted infections um and this one was made in the 80s and it kind of has like a weird uh uh what would I say it has kind of a weird vibe uh let me change I'm gonna change this uh heading while we're talking um almost like a sitcom like there's characters uh it takes place in a VD Clinic uh and there's like sub plots and yeah it's it's kind of interesting kind of interesting thing a way to express information in an era where the cheers existed so it's like is this cheers an STD clinic I don't know uh so this is not a game enjoy [Music] did you know that despite all the news reports about the dangers of AIDS sexually transmitted diseases are being spreaded an ever-increasing rate I work at an STD clinic think about it follow me room B my favorite I know thank you Patty nurse Simmons thank you Nurse Simmons you're welcome Mr Phillips a doctor will be with you in a minute oh nurse Simmons tell me the truth how do I look awful Patty can I catch a lift home tonight I thought doctors were supposed to drive big expensive cars that don't break down so did I can I catch a left sure why not Ted Phillips again room B how is he yes I think I'll do this one first whatever you say you're the doctor don't try making me feel guilty it won't work I'm back late but back late hey two against one no fair who said life's Fair Patty isn't one of the rules whoever's late gets pre-med Ted rule 12. hey wait a minute and I've got patience waiting and so do you fine what can I do for you honey nothing wait believe me there's nothing to be afraid of here you don't even have to say what's wrong out loud I promise but I do need you to fill out a form everything here is confidential but we have to have some background medical information so we can do our job better and a way to file this so we don't lose track of anything you understand that don't you okay let me get you a pen and the form uh would you like some water or some coffee or something no no thanks okay I'll be right back okay you're never that nice to meet you never deserve it nice to see you again Jill and you Rick wish I could say the same one you lied to me didn't you huh I didn't catch this from a toilet seat Joe it won't do you any good to blame each other right now what we have to do now is to get the two of you healthy again right I am healthy I mean if I've got anything which I doubt I hardly even notice it so I should be in pain every time I go to the bathroom or maybe even end up sterile because you because if you two don't mind I really want you to understand what this infection is and what we'll do can't you just give us the shots or pills or whatever and let us go no I can't Jill is Right chlamydia is possibly linked to a number of problems including increased cancer risk and sterility and you're not getting out of here until you understand just what's going on inside of your body because of this disease now I have some information for you in case you have any questions later ah hand out no lecture can I sleep now does he always fall asleep this fast usually chlamydia is a bacterium infection transmitted by genital oral or anal sex it's the major cause of potentially serious non-gonorrheal bacterium infections in men and women if it's so common what's the big deal the big deal is that Jill keeps having painful urination lower abdominal pains and a discharge and just because you're not showing any signs of it doesn't mean you aren't infected too in fact since Jill keeps coming down with the disease it's apparent that you keep reinfecting each other so we need to treat both of you at once does that make sense to you yes doctor recent studies seem to link chlamydia to much higher rates of cervical cancer and increased chances of arthritis cystitis pelvic inflammation and infertility I can read how nice why don't you read what it says about taking all of the medication I'm going to give you so it doesn't simply hibernate and come back later foreign do it not really do you have any questions so far um oh yeah I can't help it I have a question not all of us are know-it-alls or afraid to ask when I first came in here you were concerned that it might be gonorrhea what's the real difference between that and what we have for one thing gonorrhea is caused by gynecockus bacterium rather than the chlamydial bacterium gonorrhea is generally spread the same way through sexual contact and it has similar symptoms but usually more dramatic it often has a milky discharge that if it gets on your hands can infect your eyes and other membranes yuck one of the big differences is how we treat the two diseases what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the other that's why we got tested right but with gonorrhea it's even more important that we test procure before we go on test for what is much stronger than the chlamydial bacterium that means it's more likely to cause illnesses such as PID or pelvic inflammatory disease which causes chronic swelling of the inner organs and often leads to sterility it also means the Gana caucus is simply not as easy to kill particularly with the development of penicillin-resistant strains in the past 20 years so with gonorrhea it's even more important that we take a test again after treatment at least once preferably twice to make sure that you aren't infected before you resume sexual relations if you resume sexual relations if Ted is waiting come on come on room B remember second on the left did I ever tell you how lovely your eyes are would you like me to drop kick you in the right direction I'd never let you do this if you didn't make my hormones rush so uncontrollably okay Ted so what is it this time did you know that human papilloma Virus Infection is up 500 percent in the past 15 years yes I'm a doctor I just found out is that what you have this week or it's positive and with the increased evidence that these warts can cause cervical cancer in my partners and the fact they can be transmitted by any physical contact with the warts I'm very worried I see symptoms itching redness small almost undetectable sores did you know that genital warts is more common amongst teenagers in the U.S than chlamydia and gonorrhea put together yes Dad and it's very trendy under to have them are you sure it isn't hemorrhoids why wrong part of the anatomy oh anyway I know we have several options for treatment I really like the concept of laser treatment burning and freezing don't seem right for me and ointments are messy true now surgery do you think it's that bad I don't know yet why because I haven't made my diagnosis you haven't no you made the diagnosis okay Ted why you don't just take preventative measures instead of going through all this I'll never understand okay Ted drop your pants so we can shake these warts out sooner we start treatment the better let's take my word for it [Music] [Music] this way have a seat I'll just write your prescription then are you allergic to anything yeah doctors Lisa could you take this one right away I was going to write out I'm afraid she's going to leave she's so nervous and embarrassed about what you win the doctor will see you now miss hey I'll be with you in a minute while you're waiting why don't you go over the section on prevention come on have a seat hi my name is Lisa I'm the doctor you're Roxanne yeah yeah I'm going to tell you something very embarrassing about myself although I'm a doctor and I should know better I have this incredible ritual every once in a while I get a pedicure buy new underwear and get my legs waxed because I have to see my gynecologist I think it's funny too now we're going to have to talk about some pretty intimate things here and you can't afford to be too embarrassed to tell me anything okay cough oh okay Ted you can pull them up warts right warts wrong are you sure yep but Ted you said you've been itchy lately and my Skin's been turning red with little bumps where I itch I know it's herpes isn't it it's classic before the cold sores come there's a burning sensation itching and redness all I haven't had pains in my legs buttocks or testicles yet but not everyone does I also haven't had a watery discharge from my urethra at least not that I've noticed oh and if I just waited a few more days before coming in I would have seen the watery blisters develop then ulcerate and scab over ten do you mind yes I mind herpes is forever for the rest of my life this virus this tiny little foreign organism will live inside my body and pass through my sores into the bodies of other people and not just by sexual intercourse but also by casual contact and kissing I know doctor you feel bad hey I understand how bad you feel that you can't cure this you can treat it with some drugs so the outbreaks won't be as painful for the rest of my life during times of stress I will probably develop these sores won't I no you won't has there been a breakthrough dad why are you in such a hurry to have herpes what herpes may not be fatal but it's not exactly a picnic outbreaks don't just mean sores they're usually accompanied by fevers or general tiredness that can make life harder to handle life is hard enough and even with the drugs that can lessen the pain and even with herbal soothing herpes can seriously impact your life and what'll I do 10. just because you've been itching doesn't mean you have herpes no what does it mean it means we're going to have to take some tests to find out what we do next you think it's AIDS too knowing you it's not that simple very often different diseases have the same symptoms for instance you're definitely running a fever and you've been sweating a good deal at night that could mean anything from the flu to some of the more seriously sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis hepatitis and AIDS your swollen lymph glands are symptomatic of AIDS but they're also symptoms of syphilis sometimes hepatitis and any number of non-sexually transmitted diseases if you're trying to make me feel better it's not working that's okay diseases are scary and like I said we're going to test for several of them including a test to see if you're exposed to the HIV virus that causes AIDS I don't feel good just relax breathe deeply okay you okay I guess now you show some symptoms of AIDS like the swollen glands and low resistance to minor infections and even though you don't have the purple lesions that we often look for and you really haven't lost much weight we're going to test just to see if you've been exposed to the HIV or Aids virus I want you to understand before we even take the test that being exposed to the virus doesn't mean you'll come down with The Arc or Aids Arc it stands for AIDS related complex it's a milder form of the disease like AIDS it means your immune system does not do its job against fighting other infections and it's these other illnesses that cause the pain and sickness and even death if it is Arc you should know some people come down with Arc before they develop AIDS some people have had Arc for years and never come down with AIDS but right now a lot of experts believe that Arc will eventually turn into AIDS it's not very comforting is it Roxanne even though AIDS is a frightening disease it's not really a hopeless one there are advances made against AIDS every day and anyone who has AIDS or is even exposed to the HIV virus has to put their energies into living with the disease not dying from it I'm still scared I know now all of these symptoms can be something else entirely but we want to test and make sure what else could it be well even though you're not jaundiced and it's most common in homosexual men I'd like to test for hepatitis B just in case but he wasn't gay maybe not but hepatitis causes tiredness glandular problems running fevers and left unchecked it can cause permanent damage to your liver so I'd rather be safe than sorry and test for it okay if you say so I also want to test for syphilis syphilis syphilis is called the Great imitator it goes through different stages and during any of them it can easily be mistaken for something else during the earlier primary stage the most common symptom is the appearance of a Shanker or sore on the genitals or wherever the bacterium enters anus mouth lips breast fingertips I haven't had any sorts they're very difficult to identify if you aren't looking for them and often they're internal for women and with men they can be hidden under the foreskin of the penis but once they've disappeared the secondary stage starts which is where swollen glands or sore throats or fevers or hair loss or any number of things can develop as symptoms then finally after a period of years possibly it will become totally symptomless but invading the inner organs till finally in the late stages the most serious effects of syphilis such as heart disease blindness crippling and even Insanity may occur but with all those things how can you tell if it's a symptom or not sometimes you can't do you think maybe he didn't know he had anything I mean maybe it wasn't that he just didn't care about me maybe he just didn't know maybe not everyone puts together the fact that they've had sex with the symptoms they've begun to feel I've gotta accept the truth don't I doc instead you do it's herpes isn't it no it isn't it thanks a million Doc it's crabs oh no yes no the itching you've had is from crabs and the redness from the itching ah what will I do I'm gonna write out a prescription for a shampoo that'll get them off your body but you've got to get them out of your clothing your bedding your toilet and any place else they might be ah I can't believe this I shouldn't even be telling you this I mean I know better being pre-med and everything but feeling clean how could she maybe she didn't know or maybe you got him from an unclean toilet seat a toilet seat are you kidding nope crabs can very easily be transmitted by inanimate objects clothes sheets even toilet seats that's not fair is it so what am I supposed to do just what you're doing right now getting yourself tested even if there's a slightest chance that you might be ill so you can be treated and won't infect anybody else yeah yes you're being here and taking care of this right away might make sure that someone else doesn't have to go through the same pain you're going through right now and it might mean that your chances of being cured from syphilis or hepatitis with a minimum of complications are much higher and if you are exposed to the HIV virus you can get treatment to try to stop it from developing into AIDS you make it sound so simple then let me complicated do you know about how these diseases are transmitted how you know tell me how is it transmitted Roxanne if it turns out you've been exposed to the HIV virus those people you might have infected will want to get help too if it's a syphilis then we'll have to contact all of them for treatment so we have to be very clear about either of these diseases I just want this to be over do you know what I mean when I say the exchanging of bodily fluids yeah you mean that you can only catch AIDS from intimate stuff nothing casual right unprotected sexual contact and sharing of needles so that blood is exchanged are the main ways people become exposed to the AIDS virus but I don't understand how could you have protected sex you do want me to go over this prevention material with you no out I know so what's the best way to avoid STDs let me guess abstinence amazing how easy it is to avoid sexually transmitted diseases by not having sex isn't it are you going to tell me to just say no no no I'm going to tell you that not having the sex is the only sure way to avoid worrying about sexually transmitted diseases or if you absolutely have to have sex have safer sex I still don't know what that means isn't it funny I mean you hear about it so often but I don't really know what that means yes oh it's easy when you get the hang of it since most STDs are spread by bodily fluids like blood and semen just make sure you don't exchange them I don't believe this one way to do that is to use a condom in fact why don't I give you a couple you no thanks but look we use a Supremacy we don't need these things spermicide alone won't necessarily kill a virus or a bacterium the suicide is great for insurance but use a condom too what do you say no way they're not foolproof they're just going to break not if you use them right use them right sure do things like use a lubricant both inside and outside to make sure there isn't as much friction putting a strain on the condom like Vaseline Heavens no Vaseline is oil based and oils break down the particles of the rubber in fact according to the latest tests oil-based lubricants make it so that within 60 seconds a condom won't keep you protected from a virus like the AIDS virus so what do you use something water-based not just water soluble but water-based like KY Jelly or just read the label to make sure oh more stuff to read great and you want to know another trick make sure you put the condom on his erect penis before any contact and roll it all the way down I don't believe this and make sure you pull out while you still have an erection so it doesn't spill out or leak and then use a spermicide again so Ted see you next week I hope not foreign great now we can finally get out of here I'll just write this up for you then forget it I've waited long enough I'm leaving now hey she said it would only take a minute I don't have another minute to waste with you people what all this Panic pedaling you people are doing about sex is a waste of my time and your time and everybody else's time so I'm not putting up with it anymore Panic pedaling you can't convince me that this is as much of a problem as you make it out to be listen as enjoyable as it may be sex is not a game we're talking about something that can create life as much as I had to say it something that can end life too you know what separates men and women from boys and girls they take responsibility for their actions they take responsibility for the people they love and they take responsibility for the people they make love to think about it [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] all right so that got a little bit more explicit in description than I thought it was going to go um but uh yeah and that's when so this is when Cornett and MTI came together and MTI used to be a police training film uh company uh it was Motorola Telecommunications something uh and so they would yeah so it would be police training stuff so they kind of merged together and then they were owned by Simon and Schuster for a little while and so uh kind of pop pop back uh what's interesting is I used to work at the national AIDS hotline and uh so a lot of this stuff came up wow I was working there and um Arc I think at that time we weren't even using that as a terminology anymore so anyways there you go not a game uh thanks for tuning in today uh uh I'm sorry I'm kind of reading comment I shouldn't be reading comments while I'm talking to you that seems counterproductive anyways thank you for tuning in uh we appreciate your eyeballs uh your itchy eyeballs and if you like what you saw you can hit the Thumbs Up Button the
