so hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh live from my archive i'm back um i'm kind of in a side room what used to be the laundry room and um slowly kind of setting things up moving a bunch of computers and equipment um i don't have the telecini here yet um i'll hope to move that later today and have it set up by tuesday or wednesday um but i have so much footage that um i've not shown you that i've been digitizing and and all that stuff so we got a lot uh but basically this is i'll just kind of brown in there beyond that window is a kitchen um you know there used to be a washer dryer here there's a bookshelf filled with a variety of different types of media there's a window there's a lot more light in this room and so uh working on some stuff trying to get some stuff up and running um i might actually get a better microphone because i don't know how boomy this is but um my apologies to youtube for not clicking go live there's just this red button and i click it and sometimes i miss it i don't see that it's not running until everybody's like hey it's not running hey it's not running so thank you for all the heads ups on that um there's a lot of cables and technology so today is a fun day it was kind of like the first day of school for me i was i woke up very excited like oh what i'm coming back this is great i have to pack a lunch and all that stuff so uh thanks for joining me uh for that uh so later in the broadcast i will announce what won the toe tapping tournament and also talk about uh what we have planned as far as competing with footage festival in the meantime here's a drug film verdict at 132. [Music] [Music] the letter was from the coroner's office standard procedure matter of fact and as always slightly inhuman dear dr corville the brains in the appropriately labeled containers are those of miss x age 22 and mr y aged 44 both were killed in an automobile collision on may 22nd his car was struck by an oncoming car driven by miss x both victims were dead on arrival at the hospital mr y had been driving erratically here to the collision the question arose whether the diffuse hemorrhage found at odyssey occurred prior to the collision in the case of miss y very little change was found in the brain and the question here is whether any factor other than the injury itself contributed to her death since there is legal action pending we will appreciate your earliest examination of these specimens the police reports are enclosed for your perusal the brain of a man aged 44 according to the police report this man we will call him darcy entered canyon road from the west side at approximately 1 30 on the afternoon of may 22nd [Music] darcy had a history of alcoholism [Music] [Music] so [Music] so the accident occurred at approximately 1 32 according to the police reformer was a dr mcguire dr mcguire had been retained by the insurance company which was carrier for the dead girls maguire explained that he understood the man involved in the fatal collision had been an alcoholic the insurance company would seek to prove that he was solely responsible for the accident mcguire asked if he might witness the examination of the two brains [Music] dr corville is a recognized authority on neuropathology the nervous system the brain the brain of a girl age 22. according to the police report the girl we will call her julie left the restaurant at approximately 1 25 on may 22nd she had driven across canyon road to meet her fiance for lunch during this hour she had two cocktails her fiance had to leave early so julie finished lunch alone the drive across canyon road to the aircraft plant where she worked as a secretary normally took her 15 minutes [Music] julie annion roads from the east at approximately 1 30. [Music] the police report states that julie was dead when the ambulance arrived her inability to make a split-second decision had sealed her verdict at 132 the brain of a girl aged 22. dr mcguire suggested that the two drinks julie had would not have affected her dr corville explained that alcohol always affects people and the brain the nervous system is the target but the brain of a young person such as julie had been would not yet show the ravages of alcoholic poisoning unless she had been drinking heavily over a long period of time the brain appears to be generally normal there is no hemorrhage indicating no visible effective injury no thickening of the meninges and no evidence of shrinkage of the brain tissues dr mcguire listened but obviously he had already made up his mind the brain showed no evidence of alcohol therefore she had not been affected dr corville reiterated his statement that alcohol always affects the brain only the degree of effect varies [Music] obviously this young girl was not a heavy drinker to see the devastating effects of alcoholic poisoning on the nervous system no better example could be had than the brain of the dead man darcy this brain discolored by a massive hemorrhage is testimony to the long-range effects of drinking dr corville noted that bleeding is more profuse in an alcoholic the younger man regarded this as a further point in his client's favor darcy had been a drunk an irresponsible menace on the highway this is the human brain after 20 years of abuse the brain was examined in detail changes in structure due to alcohol were apparent the exterior of the brain showed the severe hemorrhage but as the brain was cut into sections it was noted that blood also came from the central cavities or ventricles this indicated intracranial hemorrhage or bleeding inside the brain it was pointed out that this bleeding occurred in all the sections observed dr corville noted that the frontal lobes of the brain contain the control centers for our intelligence our memory judgment decisions and inhibitions these are the first to be affected by alcohol the individual convolutions of this portion of the brain are shrunken opening up the depressions between them [Music] note that these spaces here separating the frontal and the temporal lobes are greatly wind the internal cavities of the brain the lateral ventricles are also enlarged this shrinkage of the brain is the result of a progressive breakdown of the brain cortex due to deterioration of the nerve cells dr mcguire stuck to his theory that since the girl's brain showed no evidence of alcohol and the man's did it was logical to assume that she had not been affected by alcohol and he had but dr corville patiently explained that they were talking about two different things the man darcy was an alcoholic his behavior pattern resulted from a repeated use of alcohol over a period of years the girl was not an alcoholic but the fact that she had had two drinks cannot be ignored if dr mcguire was interested in learning something about the effect of alcohol on one's judgment and reaction time he should see a man whose specialty within this area dr stuart knox is one of the nation's foremost psychiatrists his patients include many persons for the background of alcoholism pat age 25 is a moderate drinker she has agreed to act as a guinea pig in a test to show the effects of alcohol on coordination normal coordination was evidenced by such tests as these path was then asked to type the same sentence three times the sentence read dear sir this is a test to determine the effects of alcohol on a person's coordination path was given one drink containing one ounce of 100 proof alcohol 30 minutes later pat was given a second drink the same amount as julie had taken the day she was killed the contraction of the eye as seen by dr knox was now somewhat sluggish this indicated that pat would have trouble in judging the distance between objects in front of her and in the periphery of her vision the same tests were now repeated [Music] she was again asked to type the same sentence three times [Music] there were now five errors in the typing after the second drink dr mcguire asked if a glass of beer would have had the same effect the answer there is the same amount of alcohol in a bottle of beer as there is in a glass of wine or a shot of whiskey dr mcguire was beginning to wonder the following day dr mcguire attended a lecture given by dr corville at the school of medicine loma linda university because of his preeminence in the field of neurology dr corville's concern with the growing impact of alcoholism on society has helped to focus attention on the problem dr corville was discussing the characteristics of brain changes leading to atrophy or shrinkage such atrophy causes irreparable damage to the brain [Music] this slide shows the cerebellum of a chronic alcoholic these large cells show degeneration some are missing entirely these are the cells which govern our sense of balance their deterioration leads to unsteadiness here the nerve cells of the cerebral cortex show the degrees of degeneration from minor changes to severe these changes are shown in greater detail under this higher magnification some cells appear almost normal others have all but disappeared [Music] the process of progressive deterioration leads to this ultimate change in the brain the lower half with membranes removed presents the shrunken convolutions with widened spaces between them in the upper part of the brain we see a thickening of the covering membrane a sign of an aged brain aged in this case by alcohol after the lecture dr corville asked dr mcguire if he would like to see some 16 millimeter film taken at a sports car gymkhana a gymkhana is a sports event designed to test the skill of expert drivers under various conditions the gymkhana was held in the san fernando valley california and was based on tests conducted by the dade county florida department of public safety to determine the effects of alcohol on drivers these drivers are members of the sports car club each man is driving his own car each man drove over the course three or four times before the tests began again it should be noted that these men are expert drivers having thoroughly familiarized themselves with the obstacle course each driver was given a drink containing one ounce of 100 proof alcohol one half hour before he drove the course here is what happened after the first string for purposes of clarity we have concentrated on the footage showing the red morgan driven by the white helmeted driver this driver's score at the end of the gymkhana was average here he comes he knocked down only one pylon but this slight error could be dangerous if it had occurred on a freeway or turnpike at the conclusion of the first round the drivers were given their second drink after an interval of one half hour they continued the test [Music] [Music] remember this particular driver's performance was quite typical some were better [Music] and some were worse but without exception all drivers showed an increase in errors in an increasing number of states the law says a man is not under the influence until he has an alcohol reading of 0.10 but to have such a reading this driver who weighs 150 pounds would have to consume approximately six drinks of beer wine or whiskey we have already seen what happens with one two three drinks based on these tests and on those conducted by the dade county department of public safety it is apparent that the legal level for judging a man under the influence should be lowered dr mcguire was now convinced that the dead girl julie had been affected by the two drinks she took before the accident here in this section of the girl's brain now discolored by exposure to air in the laboratory the central cavities or ventricles were small as they should be the mans were large the surface of the girl's brain presented a normal contour with closely approximated convolutions in the other brain these convolutions were narrowed and again here the space between the frontal and temporal lobes narrow in the case of the girl and wide in the case of the man julie was not an alcoholic but her reaction time was affected by the drinks not much it is true but enough to render her incapable of the split-second timing necessary to save her life the man darcy was an alcoholic the brain clearly shows that but the actual cause of death was massive intracranial hemorrhage the rate of bleeding was increased by the presence of alcohol in the blood it is possible that had he not been an alcoholic he might not have led to death [Music] an age of split second decision judgment and coordination the man or woman who says one drink won't do any harm just doesn't know these people didn't know [Music] those were my computer reading glasses yeah everything feels new and different because i'm not in my space uh yes that last film was at first i thought it was a drug related film and i'm confusing it with uh 11 59 one moment to choose which is about heroin um and um no so this was uh drinking and driving by a temperance association plus it had yet another let's watch people drive an obstacle course while they're drunk so that's at least three or four that i have in different films uh there's um alco beat there's five uh drinking drivers and then there's another one that i have so um pretty great okay so uh what else do i got for you let's lighten it up a little bit um uh with a cornet film we're good friends at coronet how to find an answer [Music] almost every day we need to know how to find the answer ten dollars a month for 12 months would be 120 yeah that can't be right but where'd i make my mistake or did i miss something here let's start at the beginning just what do you want to find out well how many months i'll have to pay and what facts will you need to find the answer with these right here total price down payment monthly payments carrying charges maybe i better set these figures on paper so i can work with people total price sixty three dollars down payment twelve dollars say that leaves about fifty dollars to pay let's see balance fifty one dollars why even with the five percent charges i shouldn't have to make any more than six ten dollar payments that's a good estimate alan now can you figure exactly how many payments well i think so let's see five payments will take care of fifty dollars and the sixth should take care of the other dollar of the balance plus the interest that means interest will be figured for six months five percent of the balance of fifty one dollars is 255 interest for a year then divide by two because it's only six months interest will be 128. my last payment should be 228. then i can't pay for the lathe in six months yes just as you estimated pretty good if i didn't make another mistake i'll check over these figures and if they're right i'll buy that lane good enough alan oh mother that's wonderful and there's a nine and a half yard remnant at that price yes just a minute i'll measure the windows and see nine and a half yards it's a wonderful life that'll be enough let's see five feet and one more six feet altogether six feet and two windows two drapes for each nine and a half yards hello mother can you call me back in about 10 minutes i just can't figure this out all right goodbye oh nine and a half yards sounds as if you have a problem bonnie i sure do it's about this remnant of material mothers found i can't figure out or they'll be enough to make new drapes or not and that's your problem yes i think i have all the facts i need the drapes to be six feet long we'll need four of them and the material is nine and a half yards long i can't figure any further than that oh don't give up you do have all the information you need but you've forgotten one thing the relation between a foot and a yard so four drapes six feet long 24 feet of material needed oh nine and a half yards and we'll need 24 feet well that's eight yards they'll even be enough to allow for hems better check it i'll do that right now how do we work out our problems well let's take a look at one more person let's watch for the step-by-step procedure he uses oh harry would you explain just what your problem is sure you see we want to put tile squares on this floor i'm trying to find out how many boxes of tile to order now to know that i need to know the dimensions of this room the size of the tiles and how many come in each box well i have the figures here i measured the room it's 14 feet by 9 feet then i got figures on the tiles from this catalog each box holds 48 tiles and that's enough for 27 square feet of floor the tiles are 9 inches square now that i have all the information i need i want to make an estimate make a guess at the final answer like this the room is 14 by nine feet now if it were well 14 by 10 feet that would mean 140 square feet a box of tiles will cover 27 square feet i'll say 30 to make figuring easy and there's my estimate about five boxes that's just a rough estimate of course i could be wrong by as much as one or two boxes but you know that your answer won't be as high as say ten boxes that's right well you have to cut and fit these tiles and there's some waste so we can't figure exactly by square feet we'll have to figure the number of tiles you know sometimes it helps to visualize a problem let's place a few and see how many will need the tiles are nine inches square that's three-fourths of a foot so for every three feet in the length of the floor we'll need four tiles four tiles in the first three feet four more and four more 12 tiles so we might say that the room is 12 tiles wide now for its length we have 14 feet tiles for every three feet no that won't come out even we'd better figure it out fourteen feet and each tile is three-fourths of a foot how many three-fourths are there in fourteen or in other words fourteen times four-thirds equals what eighteen and two-thirds of course i'll need a whole towel for that two-thirds so what i'll need is 19 tiles a long way that will be um 228 tiles now since there are 48 tiles in a box we can divide 2 28 by 48 and the answer is 4 nearly five so i'll have to buy five boxes of tiles and i'll have a few towels left over that checks pretty well with my estimate but it's a good thing i figured it out so that's my answer five boxes good enough harry now let's review the exact steps to use in working out the problem once the problem is formulated first decide what data you need harry did that first of all second obtain and organize the data harry obtained data by measuring the room and by checking a catalog third estimate the result get an approximate answer to guide your work fourth perform the needed operations add subtract multiply divide whatever is necessary to obtain an answer from your data and finally check your answer make sure it is correct these are the steps harry used in a way alan and bonnie used them too alan decided just what facts he needed then he got those facts and organized them so he could better understand how to interpret them he made an estimate of the answer carefully performed the operations and checked his answer bonnie too decided what data she needed and then obtained the facts by measuring then she did something very important she organized her data and translated the data into units she could compare directly she was then able to estimate the answer perform the operations and check yes this is the procedure we should use in solving any of our mathematical problems [Music] sorry i'm eating an apple i mean it is the 80 geeks lunch right so sorry about that it's very impolite um anyhow well my hair is crazy i'm gonna have to get a haircut uh so the reason i'm back in the archive is uh fully vaccinated and uh waited two weeks and um that's great i feel really awesome it's been very exciting to uh visit friends um i went to a party and kind of hung out outside with people i hadn't seen a long time so there you go um so it's time to talk a little bit about uh what transpired on friday friday is was the elite eight of the toe tapping tournament and um so here's how it broke down uh so uh acid trounced drugs are like that um you know an ad for lsd which is what that asset song sounds like was enough to really beat it um in my mind um lots of great comments from folks about that and how it was just a rave and people was uh people were very excited um duck and cover got trounced by malaka powell to do skip too which is surprising to me because uh duncan cover is easily one of the most popular educational films that i have in my collection um so many people remember it and reference it and um the uh i think the the kind of folksy hippie like insane uh malacha palika do skip two took it whereas uh and you know my wife was wondering about the visuals like was it were the visuals contributing and it's fine if they did because i don't you know i think that it's the whole package uh then books are for burning of course trounced a telezonians pick up the phone um you know having it in a giant in a disco and having a really phenomenal song that immediately when it starts playing like i started like bumping my head and tapping my toes i get that uh and then of course the hardest competition that was kind of neck and neck for a while which shake hands with danger versus vd is for everybody and everybody commented that this was hard very very hard um and uh so um and you know if we had planned out the brackets better which we kind of did kind of didn't my wife actually did a lot of it and she did it based on duration which was kind of a weird way to do it but if we had planned it out um we could have put vds for everybody in a different bracket so that they would have they both would have made the final four but you know it's what happens so um if you read in the middle of the chart you'll see that uh the toe tapping intercontinental belt showdown has been announced and it's going to be a live event and it's not going to be normal during normal 80 geek lunch time it's actually going to be at 9 00 pm eastern daylight time on thursday may 13th and it's going to be hosted by the found footage festival and they are because they have more eyeballs and they've been doing this longer so um but i'll be a guest on that show also a jim stringer the guy who wrote shaken hands with danger is going to be a judge i think we'll see how it plays out we'll see how he is when it comes to judging his own song um and we're gonna take on some songs that uh found footage festival have uh ponied up and um i say that we can trounce most of them except for one which is uh super duper pooper um is from the video it's potty time and um it was a favorite at the house i used to live at with when i started collecting films um it's potty time we used to bring out every single party that we had um and super duper cooper was a really popular song so it's gonna be tough gonna be tough all right uh let's see what do we got um let's see i've depressed you with a bunch of brains um let's see how to find the answer um yeah let's watch some insurance spots uh uh tv spots for different types of insurance just give me one good reason why i should have blue cross hospital medical protection you're sick when you need it you're better off with blue cross just give me one good reason why i should have blue cross hospital medical protection it's a boy when you need it you're better off with blue cross how'd he get in well officer the guy must have come up the fire escape and jimmy the window uh-huh what's missing oh gosh our portable tv the silver and some cash i had around by watching my jewel case boy i hope you kids have some insurance if you rent a house or meet you just relax ed things are going great at the office i've taken over your accounts and the clients couldn't be happier so you just lie there and get better you're here you've got it pretty soft ed any messages for the boys at the club or shall i just say you're gonna hang around here for a few weeks remember me clark from allstate your brand new car is a total loss but i brought you a check monday morning and gordon has a customer to see 200 miles away and joanne is taking little jimmy to the dentist for them and millions of other families two cars are a must and a major expense in the household budget hello i'm ed reimers here to tell you about one good way to cut the cost of owning two cars it's this the allstate two-car discount here's how it works when you insure two or more cars with an all-state policy you get a substantial savings on each car you insure [Music] so if you own two cars then see an all-state agent about the all-state two-car discount give me one talk to the good hands people um yeah so that's uh i've been grouping together some of the public service announcements and tv commercials that i have a little chunks i'll do that more um found out a way to do that with this software that i have uh so i got a little bit of time left here and um normally you know i start with a a silent film but i want to end with this one this one i just recently found again and this is one that's from my collection it's not a home movie of me but it's something i bought on uh ebay because of the screenshots and i was like oh my god i have to have this it's called the joy of working and it looks to be um some sort of charity thing that this couple does and they decided to document it and there is some serious nightmare fodder in here it's it's glorious i love it so here here's the joy of working so ready to be loved again um the uh images of all the dolls that's what it was posted on uh ebay and the uh i was like oh my gosh look at all those clowns look at all those santas look at oh boy um so i had to purchase it i can't remember how much i paid for it but you know it's it has some chilling imagery when taken out of context but it is very quaint and sweet you know they're trying to rehabilitate dolls so that they'll give them to children at the children's hospital it's very sweet but um and i'm sorry for all the triggering clown images but maybe i'm not sorry i don't know anyways thanks for joining us today this was exciting uh and this is going to be where we're going to be um you know unless for some reason numbers start jumping back up again and things are going crazy which uh knock on wool on a wall uh that will not happen uh hopefully things will start getting back to some semblance of um normalcy and anyways thanks for joining uh as always you can buy us coffee to say how much you like us now that i have two locations i have to have coffee in two locations i have two of these and i have to make sure that i don't leave them all at one location or the other because that's a problem because i have a coffee problem uh also tell the world that you like av geeks by hitting like subscribe click the notification bell um comment share all that stuff thank you so much again for those of you who've been watching since mid-march of last year um this is a long journey we're not through it yet but um we're seeing we're seeing on the horizon something and i'll be here and i'll be continuing to do this because i very much enjoy showing these films to you and i enjoy your comments and um it gets me to show my collection more which is what i wasn't doing before so thank you so much and uh everybody have a good rest of your day uh as always uh please rewind and love each other um now that i'm back at the archive i might be able to find some more film cans that have more uh little glimpse of of wisdom and um so everybody take care and i'll see you soon bye five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six
