so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where i am not at the archive i'm actually with my family at the beach while my assistant slave away at the archive um anyways uh yesterday we talked about lasagna and my mom talked about lasagna and today i was trying to figure out like what type of show i would do i don't normally do themed shows but something struck me this morning and that is the fact that uh with all the people my family here each of them has their own unique way of making coffee um so we're gonna do a quick pan of the counter at this beach house um hopefully you can see it so this is uh some hazelnut cream coffee that my stepfather d likes then we have traditional coffee uh with a mr coffee then we're gonna make our way down then of course uh katrina and i when we make coffee we use the french press built-in french press and then my assister and brother-in-law and nephew uh use the keurig and they use their own variation on that so we'll all be talking about that as we um make our way through the beach house but first we're going to talk with uh dee who we've had on the show before id he's good hi say hi to everybody hi everybody um so when did you start drinking coffee i started drinking coffee when i was a kid um did you your parents introduced you to it or did you say it okay my parents introduced me to it they would let me have a cup every now and then not all the time though so would you load it up with sugar and cream oh yes yeah so it was basically like a dessert yes but then in the marine corps i started drinking it black and i was drinking a pot a day a pot a day hotter day and smoking [Laughter] just to stay awake or to just just because it felt good okay how did that how did that handle with your gut drinking that much coffee every day went to the bathroom a lot yeah i bet you did and that was not a flush toilet was it no it wasn't yeah all right okay so uh today i pulled a bunch of films about coffee and i should say that one way you can reward av geeks is by buying us coffee at ko-fi.com av geeks alright so it is time for coffee enjoy everybody [Music] [Applause] [Music] we americans know what we like and we really do like coffee did i say like well we use more than three billion pounds of coffee every year where does it all come from mostly from south america so let's fly down and get the story firsthand there's a typical plantation now [Music] many of the remote villages depend upon the plantations for their existence life is pretty much the same as it has been for generations today of course each village has its own schoolhouse and the standard of living is immeasurably higher with increased knowledge naturally the education of its youngsters includes learning all about coffee at an early age [Music] they learn that coffee begins with a little plant or tree these trees thrive best in rich red soil when transplanted from the nursery they're about two years old set in shallow holes eight to fourteen feet apart the tree must grow for another two or three years before bearing its first crop [Music] brazil alone has more than a million square miles of coffee country an area larger than all the united states east of the mississippi this is a coffee blossom eight to nine months after this blooming the coffee fruit ripens and looks very much like a cherry picked by skilled workers who know just when the ripe berry should be plucked the average tree bears enough coffee beans to make about one pound of roasted coffee a year [Music] each plantation has its assembly points where the day's pick is brought in to be weighed and bagged this is just one step in more than 24 major operations required in bringing your cup of coffee to the table [Music] the berries must go through a crushing and washing process which takes place on the plantation [Music] crushing removes the protective red covering with which nature has enclosed each coffee bean then they are washed the beans float while skin or pulp sinks to the bottom providing adequate water facilities on a tropical plantation is a necessary and costly requisite in producing high quality coffee [Music] now encased only in its final hull or parchment the coffee beans are spread out to dry in the sun this takes from eight to ten days men must rake and turn the beans so that they all will dry evenly then packed in bags the dried green coffee is ready to be sent into the city here it is unloaded at a warehouse where it will be inspected sorted and graded for quality this initial grading is one of the most important operations in the selection of coffee today mechanical methods are so perfected that coffee is sorted by machines with great precision [Music] each bag after it is stamped with its country of origin name grade and destination is ready to go to the seaport where final tests are made before shipment to the united states [Music] [Applause] using an instrument like an apple corer a checker stabs each bag and withdraws a sample for testing the anp has its own coffee experts right on the spot to test and grade the contents of each bag to see that it meets the company's quality standards samples are flown to the united states together with the experts appraisals of grade and value [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] testing also includes roasting samples of the green coffee and actually taste testing it for strength and flavor today many of the great cities of latin america have been built largely upon the business of exporting coffee which is one of their most valuable commodities [Music] the people are modern up-to-date and eager to trade with their good neighbors to the north [Music] when the coffee crop is good business is good for coffee means the same to these people and their ability to buy the things they need as wheat to a farmer in nebraska or corn to iowa and kansas [Music] [Applause] [Music] my [Music] while its miles of beautiful beaches and modern cities lure thousands of people to latin america nothing intrigues the tourist more than a visit to the waterfront to watch the ship's loading coffee for shipment to the united states [Music] now a cargo of coffee is loaded aboard ship with the same care you'd use in storing food in your home you know some foods must be kept dry a sudden drop in temperature upon leaving the tropics could cause dampness in the ship's hold this moisture could injure the coffee unless the beans are carefully stowed so loading a cargo of coffee is also an important operation in getting this beverage on its way to you [Applause] [Music] new york new orleans and san francisco are the principal ports through which coffee arrives in the united states [Music] here licensed graters spear each bag for fresh samples and taste test the shipment to make certain the coffee they've bought compares with the reports and samples from south america [Music] based upon the findings of these experts one coffee is mixed in the blending machine with another to produce the bouquet the aroma the flavor desired [Music] from blending machines the green coffee is introduced next to huge automatically controlled roasting ovens hundreds of pounds at a time done to a turn cascades of precisely roasted beans are released at just the right moment ready to be freshly sealed into packages the very same day in this way you know the coffee you buy is fresh and ready to be custom ground just right for the way you make coffee [Music] yes we north americans really do like coffee we drink around 120 billion cups a year after all drinking coffee is one of life's pleasures a pleasure that cannot be duplicated by any other beverage [Applause] [Music] uh so dee you wanted to follow up uh you were in uh vietnam and you wanted to talk about how you made coffee back in the day yeah we had a mess tent and we would put a five gallon pot of water on let it come to a boil take it i believe it was three pounds or five pound uh military coffee dump it in stir it up let it sit when the grounds drop to the bottom we would then scoop it off the top and drink it it was really good yeah like campfire coffee but now you're kind of the hazelnut cream that's no that's your mom's coffee i drink regular oh you do coffee oh but i make that for her some so here on the trip we're just unhaving to drink hers yeah so mom didn't drink coffee when i was at home so i didn't learn how to drink coffee until i was in college we got married yeah all right you drove her to drink coffee that's great all right so now we're going to um make our way the magic of uh talking to dee's uh children brett and becca um and brett um and becca hi hello and becca you're coincidentally wearing a special shirt today the av geeks shirt that's great that you use as a night shirt you said they do because because it's big that's nice so um quickly who are you guys and what do you do uh i'm becca i'm a woodworker at a furniture company so i do hardwood furniture and i'm brad i'm a woodworker as well then i do commercial casework and no work so tell me about your coffee drinking habits uh daily um as much as much as i get in my um in my good stuff and where do you get it normally yeah compare foods or compare foods uh or your local uh mexican grocery store yes uh becca what tell us about your coffee drinking habits i'm a one cup of pers i one cup a day first because if i have two nobody likes me um so how do you make your coffee uh usually it's a coffee machine and recently i've been laughing to use chock full of nuts i think it's kind of fun and old-fashioned and sometimes i even use eight o'clock coffee like grandma used to well we just featured a film that had eight o'clock coffee being manufactured so but she used a percolator all right it was very hardcore coffee she didn't put creamer sugar and she drank the whole pot she was a very active lady wow i can't do that great um and so you're uh both you guys you were using the mr coffee here at the beach is that correct no that's fine it's good it's easy it's new it's it's good technology all right so um it's time for another cup of coffee and this is a film that just tangentially is related to coffee it's really more about i think life insurance so enjoy [Music] good [Music] thank you [Music] so [Music] hello prudential what would be this morning coffee yes gracie cup of coffee before i start out [Music] so [Music] why the worried look worried oh no gracie i was just wondering where i'm going to find some more prospects prospects what are they prospects gracie are people who need insurance well don't look at me i just took a policy from you last week remember more prospects where am i gonna find him i'm gonna get him take it easy jim old man take it easy you've gotten over tougher hurdles than this before prospects are all around you wherever you go is that so of course it's so take this store for instance take walter smith who owns it oh i know he's crowding the retirement age and he's protected with business insurance family coverage and retirement income you helped him set it up you've done a swell job with walter smith adjusting his program to fit the changing conditions through the years and well he isn't exactly a prospect himself walter smith is a source of prospects as a satisfied owner of life insurance he's actually a booster for you and prudential you might call him a member of your unpaid sales staff walter smith is frequently with a word here and there in casual conversation paving the way to prospects prospects willing to talk to you and trust you because they trust walter smith uh oh jim step here a minute will you please uh mrs hardy uh meet uh jim reynolds he's an agent for the prudential how do you do mr reynolds i'm very glad to meet you mrs hardy are you a newcomer to our town yes jim mr hardy is the foreman at the new plant uh out on the south side i see you're getting a prescription filled i hope no one in your family seriously ill oh no judy has a slight touch of the flu oh i'm sorry to hear that i hope she gets well soon everyone in town seems to have it and our kids seem to get everything that's going around well perhaps when she's better you'll allow me to call on you and mr hardy to talk to him about his life insurance oh well i'm sure he wouldn't be interested in buying any insurance i don't think it objected talking to you if you want to come around we live at 195 benson thank you mrs hardy perhaps i can give some service to him and offer him some suggestions on his present life insurance i look forward to seeing you again thank you oh just with that in my account he said goodbye goodbye mrs hardy thank you very much mr smith you're welcome prospects are the foundation of this business the success of every prudential man depends on prospects people approachable under favorable circumstances in need of insurance able to pay for it and acceptable as risks that's right jim old man success comes from sales sales come from interviews interviews come from prospects there are really five fundamental factors in successful prospecting remember one prospecting requires awareness it's the ability to spot people to get information about them and to translate that information into their total insurance needs remember prospecting must be a continuous process you must constantly replenish your list of prospects remember three prospecting requires the systematic coverage of all sources it's a part of every contact in every conversation practically every house every place of business every shop is a source of good prospects remember four prospecting requires the recording of information prospects is so important to your success you can't depend on memory alone remember five prospecting is the key to sales sound prospecting opens the gateway to outstanding production yes prospecting and sales go hand in hand the five fundamental factors that make prospecting the partner of successful salesmanship lead right back to walter smith he's a center of influence in his business he's also a center of influence in his family his children are grown up now grown up and making homes of their own their new prospects for you [Music] in this business you're constantly face to face with a future it's the first baby for jane and she's happy happy because it's a boy and her husband wanted a boy here is prospecting in the raw and a most opportune time to talk insurance needs for dad as a prospect now there's more family and more need for life insurance on dad's life this little fellow might be president of the united states but whether he will be or won't be he's sure to need life insurance the same as his dad so let's start his program now when he's old enough he can become a partner with his dad and help pay for his own insurance with the money he makes from odd jobs it will help him learn the lesson of systematic thrift in addition it may be the first step in providing for his future education a college education costs money but it'll pay big dividends and extra earnings if he has the opportunity to get one dad is a prospect and this is an ideal time to discuss his family security program with him and remember this little fellow is a prospect too yes sir a seven pound six ounce prospect and growing bigger all the time make a note of it something new has been added to the family it's a brand new house for bill smith as beautiful a place as any man could ever hope to call his own in another twenty years when the mortgage is paid off well he can card his own home anyway what's the difference the difference is making sure with mortgage redemption insurance and that makes you bill smith a prospect for specific coverage prospecting requires awareness and generally it isn't something the size of a house that tips the information it's usually a little something that drops easily in the course of conversation something perhaps about the neighbors gossip a gag even the translated means insurance needed when prospecting is a continuous process with a prudential man when it's automatically a part of every contact in every conversation the family of one prospect leads to the families of friends and neighbors that new doctor in the neighborhood he's building quite a practice hmm he ought to be a good prospect yes prospects are everywhere and by the way bill smith that raise and pay that gave you the courage to buy this new house should also make you interested in some additional income insurance for your family make a note of that too prospecting requires the recording of information for intelligent selling and service prospecting requires the systematic coverage of all sources and that of course includes the newspapers today there's a story about sam mckay's daughter graduating with all honors from high school she's going to college too it says sure enough her dad has an endowment policy maturing there's another prospect now he should be able to go further with his life insurance program without endowment premium out of the way the endowment check on that policy taken years ago will help him put mary through college wise father lucky girl sam wouldn't have taken that policy years ago except for some prospecting prudential man and he probably wouldn't take any more insurance now without another prospecting prudential man of course sam knows the value of insurance everybody does it's just that sam is human he's just like so many other people he puts insurance off postpones it has something he can pick up anytime he and his family would be in a bad way if the prudential man felt the same way about it sam needs the prudential man and the friendly service that ensures the future sometimes it's hard to tell where prospecting stops and selling begins not that it matters what matters is those sales the proof of positive prospecting prospecting is the key to sales behind every application for insurance lies the five fundamental factors that make prospecting the necessary partner of successful salesmanship prospecting requires awareness prospecting must be a continuous process [Music] prospecting requires the systematic coverage of all sources prospecting requires the recording of information prospecting is the key to sales that coffee must be stone cold by this time huh what i said that coffee must be stone cold by this time oh no no gracie uh it's wonderful coffee another cup [Music] no gracie i've got a lot of prospects to see thank you gracie um so i like films like this because this is obviously a niche film made for insurance salesmen uh and it also reminds me of the film more dates for k where uh it's a coronet film where k takes every possible human interaction to try to turn it into a date um i'm sure that this guy the salesman um annoyed his friends and family so much that he had to relocate to another town um kevin thank you so much for the coffee uh we are showing lots of films about coffee today uh because we like coffee and i'm staying with my family and they love coffee uh you can support av geeks by going to ko-fi.com av geeks and we are here with my sister heather there we go there she is right there um we share the same genetic code we're not twins but we are uh so when did you start drinking coffee oh lord probably in college probably just as a stimulant bikini or whatever but now i really like the taste of coffee so i find myself drinking decaf some of the time because i really like the taste of coffee and i drink it black well that's great um so where do you get your coffee normally costco costco yeah costco brand coffee's pretty good yeah or kirk is it kirkland yes sorry so um you guys use keurig yes and the first time i encountered a keurig i was like this is an amazing waste of packaging i was amazed that you could only get one cup of coffee per a pod yes and you guys have addressed that happen we have these refillable pods that we got from an online sales player we we've ordered like 15 of them and so what we do is we just fill it up with our coffee and then what i end up doing is i saved the coffee that we brewed and put it in our yard so this is a good way to you're not wasting right the packaging and you're not wasting the coffee because it's really good for the ground that's great and so um have you your husband also drinks coffee too is that right oh yes and now he's in love with the decaf i'm telling you this decaf tastes like real stuff the trip this trip i've i've started introducing a little bit of caffeine so i do a little half half calf half decaf and you've passed this on to your son nate nate and so we gave him our old keurig and um gave him some of these pods and so um yes he uses it as well but i don't know what brand of coffee he buys well hopefully i'll be able to get him off his phone and we can ask him directly um well thank you heather for sharing your coffee experiences i mean wrong i forgot i'm backwards on the camera um it's it's phenomenal how how many different there's different people have different ways that they make their coffee here and we all have decided to just let we have enough counter space where we can say like sure yeah you can make your coffee that way because we have a lot of counter space some of the other beach houses would not have been and we've also tried like making one pot and sharing it and everybody likes their different strengths and so yeah we just gave up on that yeah probably a year ago yep thank you heather um and so um [Music] we've got uh or i've got i did a project where we digitized a bunch of uh maxwell house commercials for duke university's ad views uh archive and so here are a bunch of maxwell house commercials including my favorite featuring paulin enjoy [Applause] memorable moment at the and maybe we'll join us for some of the shows that we'll be doing when he's with us this summer um nate why don't you tell us a little bit about your coffee um you said you didn't drink coffee never drink coffee and what are you drinking now i don't know how to describe coffee um so how do you uh your mom said that she uh gave you the old keurig do you use that when you make coffee or do you go to starbucks well i used to use it and then it ran into issues so i just switched to a french press and then my roommates got a cure oh nice good cool what is your favorite flavor of coffee just regular yeah i just drink it black so it all tastes the same pretty much nice unless it's really bad yeah really bad like folgers right um is that the worst coffee you've ever had or have you had um i would say so okay my favorite coffee is the coffee from the carts in new york city when we were up there and well when we go up there i try to i gotta go to the cart get my cart coffee i'm usually a vacation coffee drinker not a everyday coffee drinker not a habitual coffee drinker like myself i think my first time having black coffee oh yeah with us oh nice was it in one of those little cups that says that like greek lettering that says we are happy to serve you no but it was a really tiny cub i do remember that it was like this big oh yeah nice so katrina you brought um the instrument this is the so friends of ours designed this i know skip has told you about it before it's called the impress and it's basically a travel mug but it's it's got a built-in press so we use um it's got a gasket and a thing and a thing and he puts the coffee in and he puts the hot water in from our kettle and lets it steep and then presses it down and voila nothing gets thrown away except for coffee grounds which we compost and the thing is also when the coffee it stays in there for a little while and sometimes in the afternoon i'll take a swig of this super super saturated uh coffee and it gives me an instant caffeine headache it's great so the moral of the story is we are a caffeine coffee caffeine family hence the buy skip some coffee yes yes and thank you jeremy for buying us some coffee you can go to ko-fi.com av geeks to buy us coffee because obviously we have a problem um thank you for supporting our habits um thanks for joining us and for my family for uh allowing me to take an hour out of your day to do this thing that i do um hit like the thumbs up button hit subscribe comment share it's great i'm happy to have you guys on vacation with us because uh this is what i like
