[Music] [Music] [Music] the Daytona International Master smote er Speedway into the clan of 500 featuring America's fastest drivers and stock cars the meeting before thousands of racing fans for the richest prizes but in all the history at the famous daytona raceway the most incredible event was run before empty grandstands there were only a handful of they were destined to rewrite the pages of history it was called the comet durability run a triumph at Daytona [Music] behind it a red white and blue idea especially equip and prepare a team of American racing cars for high speed driving start them around the world's fastest track at record-breaking speeds falls only for pit stops and see how far they could run a public torture test that would help to build better safer cars for tomorrow and an openly staged all-out assault on the world's speed and distance records which now rested on to be official any speed or endurance run must be sanctioned by proper authorities a top organization for international speed records is the fédération Internationale de l'Automobile FIA and it's American agent the automobile competition Committee for the United States Bacchus the National Association for stock car racing NASCAR would supervise the United States record attempt the cars were powered by the optional new comet cyclone high-performance 289 cubic inch v8 engine they also were equipped with optionally available heavy duty transmissions drive shafts and axles and with variable rate auto light shock absorbers and their suspensions were specially stiffened to cope with the extraordinarily steep banks of the Daytona track racing tires and roll bars were also installed according to NASCAR safety regulations when the cars had been checked and tuned by expert mechanics they were turned over to NASCAR and FIA officials to be sure all safety precautions were observed and all parts were conformed to product certification filed with the sanctioning body and then it was h-hour at Daytona on the morning of September 21st time for one last official briefing session for the crews the NASCAR officials who would not leave the track until the last car called it quits and the launching timers veterans of the world's top sports events who would be responsible for exact timing of each car for every lap and then final instructions for the drivers who would go night and day as long as the cars would run and the mechanics who had gas in serviced the cars around the clock now the traditional slap on the roof good [Music] left turn [Music] drivers stretch out in the cars thunder by lap after lap the open [Music] twelve miles [Music] white four to two five nine yellow work new tuna from the mobile timing unit begins the special : sounds of an important international trial from the first lap each car records this lap speed as it passes through the electric I forty four times each hour the automatic tape registers each car speed spotters identify the cars allowed as they complete each lap batteries of timing devices check speed to the one hundred thousandth of a second this official timing procedure continues minute five minutes twenty four hours a day for the duration of the run [Music] radio contact between driver and engineer provide a valuable record of the car's performance at the builds of tremendous stress and strain during the run [Music] by pre-plan on the end of the second hour and every two hours thereafter the pit crew is alerted and the cars peel off one at a time for a pit stop refueling routine maintenance any necessary repairs and a change of drivers via the window because doors are bolted shut for NASCAR safety regulations other rules prescribed at all maintenance or repairs be carried out in the pit area with standard tools that all spare parts must be carried in the cars themselves any major repair to a car will make it ineligible at that point for world records NASCAR officials are on hand at every pit stop to see that the rigid regulations are observed [Applause] the crews work fast because tip time is included in running time but maintenance procedures are those used in the comet owners manual six pit stops later and the run is 12 hours old daylight fades into a purple Florida sunset [Music] the head and the guardrail lights as a guide a cars roll along [Music] and against the sky a giant Daytona signboard faces the car the first long night [Music] it stopped the change of drivers official checkup and gradually the routine is settled the drivers and cars charge on through the darkness dawn 2,200 miles in an average speed of over 106 miles per hour including time for you [Music] now affright new morning that seems to slip by a slow overcast second afternoon mile after mile lap after lap into the second the signboard totals the average speed for the first 40 hours [Music] remember doll may as the first to the rain swept night dawn a new day another and another number 26 the fifth day with 12,000 600 miles under the Bell has compiled in the official logbooks [Music] Ted stop son of them crazy patterns of guardrail lights no dog breathe stop the time begins to run together now [Music] suddenly it's the eleventh day with a team logging over 28,000 miles more than once around the earth Ilhan and AH they streak through day and night [Music] you get what you're getting for you everything is been born it's the sixteenth day the cars have passed 39,000 grueling miles hour by hour now new world speed and distance records are being tabulated for final FIA approval [Music] hours later like the 40,000 mile mark subject to final FIA approval teen high speed endurance records formerly held by foreign cars come to America or nights later October 10th on the 20th day 15,000 miles flashes on the record board [Music] Hurricane flora flashes into the news and still the comments race on into the teeth of the gale wind an hour after hour of tropical downpour and now the strain of nearly 500 hours of run is beginning to tell but out of the build-up of fatigue a kind of toughness and pride begins to grow [Applause] as the days pass and the cars incredibly race on they know that they are part of something to talk about to brag about for the rest of their lives they drive day and night and the run is 26 days old with over 67,000 miles at an average speed of over 107 miles per hour [Music] no American cars ever attempted an endurance run of over 50,000 miles before hours later the comet team blasts the 70,000 market over 40 miles an hour faster than the previous world record holder and on they race [Music] trouble at 646 miles a broken valve spring and engine repairs closed the official record books at this point for the 4th car but after repairs it too continues the run [Music] 82,000 miles October 22nd 90,000 miles on the 26th [Music] ninety-eight thousand miles on the 29th [Music] and it's October 30th the fortieth day dawning bright with a good omen and there's a special coffee bloom on every face hours away is an unbelievable goal on the track again again and the engines roar full throat minutes away now finally one more left and the lead car clicks past the ninety nine thousand nine [Music] and under the flag or began a fantastic continuous journey more than 40 days ago over 960 hours ago [Music] cars take the checkered flag ending what must be counted as one most astounding performance automobile history why a hundred thousand miles well they had to stop somewhere could the cars have continued much further the drivers and mechanics say yes how far no one guesses [Music] what happens now the cars go back to Detroit for engineering analysis which will guide the design of new and even better safer family cars for tomorrow final scoreboard all for participating comments finished the one hundred thousand mile run at an average speed of over 108 miles per hour three of them will establish pending FIA and NASCAR approval over 100 world speed and distance records the common durability run an American world triumph at Daytona [Music] you hello everybody wow that was exciting for the Mercury Comet it was a big PR thing and for Ford Mercury to introduce this car and to show that it's durable and it's sporty and you know all the things it's a big public relations publicity move and in 1964 and I've posted a link to the talks a little bit more about the event but yeah so this is a film document of this and I'm sure that this was then distributed to four dealerships mercury dealerships all over the world and you know introducing the new 1964 Mercury Comet yeah I'm skip Al's Hummer I collect old-school films and I'm showing them to you for lunch this is something we've been doing for 11 and a half weeks no ten and a half weeks and happy to do it man we have so many films we just yesterday watched our 300th film in this series and so we're still going I'm gonna keep going and you know eventually at some point I'll probably stop so I can scan more films and this has been a lot of fun and I'm just gonna keep doing it until at some point I have to go back to work bulletin boards man bulletin boards what a great communication medium in elementary school this film talks about that and it gives me a lot to think about as far as webpages as far as you know other more recent versions of a bulletin board and bulletin board still exist in schools so last time I went I saw I saw one so here they are bulletin boards [Music] the bulletin board is just a file for Miss Smith but Miss Jones plans her bulletin-board she selects her materials organizes her arrangement evaluates the display and then uses it as an effective teaching device let's see how to plan a creative bulletin board first decide on the topic then plan and sketch the bulletin board layout this saves time the bulletin board is one of the best means of visual communication we have in our classrooms don't sell it short by lack of planning make several workable plans then select the one that sells the idea best using display materials that provide exciting texture line and color keep your ideas simple keep to the point [Music] select creative display materials here are many different textural services in scrap and inexpensive materials that are available build up such a collection for continuous use so that you can provide variety when changing displays a chip to a building supply company will provide many of these samples to give that added punch to make your display eye catching appealing and distinctive decide on the appropriate lettering for captions a brush lettering pen crayon chalk felt nib pen or pinup letters can be used the lettering pen comes in many different sizes break the crayon and use the flat side for a wide line the felt nib pen is always filled and ready for use the brush is effective but takes a little more practice chalk gives a pleasant soft line [Music] cut paper letters can be used with both two and three-dimensional effects if the budget allows a supply of three-dimensional plaster letters will add distinction to any arrangement try your arrangement is it what you want this layout is commonplace it lacks punch because it is too formal here the informal layout is too scattered the paper shapes and the blank areas are too evenly divided here the same material is used but there is a tying together of shapes through line movement [Music] notice the balanced distribution of blank areas [Music] by placing illustrations on the pieces of cut paper we can see how important the blank areas are to emphasize the illustrations [Music] choose the proper fastening devices plastic head stick pins are easy to use map pins add color the plane pin is least expensive and most commonly used masking tape is a must it can be rolled and used to adhere to paper surfaces together tape with adhesive on both sides is also useful these tapes are excellent to use when a wall should not be marred the automatic stapler and ordinary desk stapler are very handy for mounting clippings neatly to any bulletin board all of these devices can be obtained at your local stationery store always use simple easy to read lettering to make the catchy caption or headline a part of the whole layout a piece of plasterers screen is used for textural interest note that a wrist pin cushion saves time whenever possible ask questions to involve the reader in getting the point across [Music] try to limit the information and illustrations get to the point in a simpler way as possible [Music] plain pins have been used here but the material is pulled out to the head of the pin giving a pleasing three-dimensional effect always evaluate the display is it attractive and does it hold attention is it well organized and neat is it easily read does it say what you want it to say now let's look at some bulletin boards done by different classroom teachers and pupils [Music] construction paper has been used to add color to black and white photographs the branch and leaves of a tree provide a three-dimensional effect which is in keeping with the subject here a quantity of information has been organized into an easily read teaching unit notice how the lettering has been related to the illustrations a mass content made in three dimension provide an unusual effect colored paper in an abstract shape holds the whole design together here again the reader is involved by a question simple lettering for children has been used the shelves have been constructed with yarn cardboard and pins milk straws have been used for the lettering and radiating ones the ingenious use of coat hangers for shelves provides an excellent means of displaying small three-dimensional objects strings easily locate the different rocks on display chalk has been used for the lettering colored string adequately gives the feeling of rain while wire shaped into flowers adds further interest starfish screen and rickrack create a distinctive feature let's look into a classroom where children and teacher are planning a display this motivates group participation in a creative activity and involves everyone in a learning experience which becomes vital and timely the children work with art elements such as texture color line form and space this stimulates interest in good design this also makes them conscious of beautifying their environment for everyday living in the classroom as well as in the home [Music] children can bring an excellent collection of background materials from home they should select and use them for a creatively planned bulletin board it is important for the children to help plan captions and then incorporate them into the complete arrangement doing the lettering with a felt nib pen is part of the learning experience when children help make bulletin boards they exchange ideas work with others use materials creatively and learn some basic ideas of design through discussion and experimentation the up-to-date teacher takes advantage of the bulletin board as an effective teaching device because it is a powerful communicating medium a teacher who follows these few basic suggestions can better work with children to plan evaluate and use a bulletin board I really wanted that to say calling all rockheads it said calling all rock hounds but it just in my head it was like yeah Rock heads yeah calling all right um yeah so that that's a magical film that I don't know if the bulletin board technology has changed that much I still think it's mostly construction paper and you could you know people are using printers to print out things but there's still some cutting and some maybe some gluing and maybe some pinning so that's one of the things that we can still look forward to is bulletin boards somebody asked about a 70s show called kid stuff I'm doing some research to see if I can find it in the meantime here is a one that is I've shown a couple of other ones in this series it's called friends and we've shown Philadelphia Atlanta this is Dallas hi I'm Walter Miller let's be friends I live in a big city I live in southwestern first in the United States in the state of Texas I live in Dallas this is the Dallas International Motor Speedway [Music] yes called Big D [Music] Dallas is located in north central Texas 250 miles from the Gulf of Mexico Dallas is a big city a big city has big buildings big city has lots of new construction [Music] big city has big industry [Music] big city has lots of city services [Music] a big city has lots of transportation [Music] [Applause] and the big city has lots of places to have fun this is Six Flags Over Texas [Music] so great that's the second time that we've seen Six Flags that was the Atlanta friends also had a visit to Six Flags as well so maybe some advertising there for Six Flags I love an amusement park one day I will go back this next film is is fascinating is a promotion it's a it's basically an advertisement for water softeners and it explains a concept of water softeners and it's targeting housewives basically who are trying to take care of some of the Drury nough sub their chores and they realize we realize for this watching this film that some of that Jurina siz related to having hot hard water and how water softeners will make our life soft as a cloud [Music] have you ever stopped to think what rain means to you if you're a farmer you have [Music] [Music] and if you're a weatherman you have [Music] [Music] but chances are when you're thinking about rain you're not thinking how important it is to you [Music] [Music] it's easy for all of us to forget that rain is so important that rain is water and without water nothing could live [Music] our entire lives revolve around water the water we drink oh joy mother said the wash your hands and face [Music] yes the father we wash with the water we wash our clothes with [Music] the water we cook with [Music] the water we clean with the water we all just take for granted yet the time has come when we should stop taking it for granted we're not getting the most out of our water these days we're not getting the most out of it because the water were using is old-fashioned water old-fashioned what no what do you mean look around you look at your home modernist tomorrow all these appliances to save you time and work yet you're ignoring the most basic time waster and work maker of all you're using old-fashioned water that streaks your glasses water that spots and stains your sink and leaves a ring around your bathtub water that won't get your clothes really clean or even give you a decent bath water that makes your hands rough and clogs your pores it sticks to your hair and makes a dull and hard to manage why the what are you talking about I'm talking about old-fashioned water hard water Oh hard water you had me scared for a minute our waters not hard all but really it is but then most water is hard somes just harder than others that's all look I'll show you what I mean the only time water is really soft in nature is here in the clouds when it's water vapor when it falls as rain it begins to absorb gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen from the air yet when it first reaches the ground rainwater is still soft and easy to use in fact for years folks collected it in barrels and cisterns to wash with instead of using the hard water from their wells because as soon as the rain hits the ground it begins to pick up minerals both as it runs over the surface and beneath the surface among the minerals in the ground are the two principal elements that make water hard calcium and magnesium and as they dissolve in the water they become tiny particles called ions thus when the water reaches your home through your well or through your city water supply it contains these hardness ions if it contained just a few your water would be almost as soft and as easy to use as rainwater but when it contains more hardness ions as yours does it's hard difficult to use inconvenient old fashioned now you can't tell that water's hard by looking at it but the chemists can tell by analyzing it if his measurements indicate that in 7,000 gallons of water only one pound of hardness minerals is present he says the water has a hardness of one green per gallon or it's one grain hard completely soft water has no grains of hardness but since water up to three and a half grains is relatively easy to use in the home most chemists agree that it can be called soft and they call water containing more than three and a half grains hard but do you the important thing is does the hardness in your water affect you and since soap and water are just natural go togethers around the house here's a test to show you just how hardness minerals and water react with soap [Music] first put a small amount of pure soap in the bottle of soft water and shake it right son because there are no hardness minerals in the water to prevent the soap from forming sense and see how clear and clean the water beneath the suds is to that's important now the other bottle use the same amount of salt that's right now shake it well why do you know is that the way hard water acts with soap yep that's it see how milky the water is that's because the soap is combined with the hardness minerals to form a soap curd and since the curd makes dirt stick to everything you can imagine how much harder it is to get close or yourself really clean I guess it would be hard to get almost anything clean with that do your clothes get clean when you wash them well of course they do I have a brand new automatic washing machine in it I'm afraid you're not giving your new washer a chance to do its best job for you what do you mean the bottle labeled hard water was filled from your faucet the very same water you thought was soft you're kidding no I'm not kidding but don't be so upset most people use water that acts the same way in fact the water in 85% of this country is hard in many places it's harder than yours and those people are battling Kurd all the time they can't help but know they have a problem especially today when people are using more water than ever before by in many places entire cities have installed municipal hardness reduction plants if this is only a start in the right direction you see hardness reduction plants just can't completely soften all the water a city uses economically so usually they merely reduce the hardness of the water to about five to eight grains and that's a big help in areas where the water is naturally 2030 or even more grains hard but five to eight grain water in your home is still hard enough to rob you of the benefits of truly soft water even though an entire industry has been developed to provide you with modern washing compounds that make suds in hard water yet in spite of his modern compounds you're cheating yourself by using old-fashioned water cheating myself exactly let's take a look at your washing machine as long as you're about to wash these clothes anyway I can show you what I mean I think that's enough for our demonstration now put in the soap well you mean detergent don't you I can't use soap in this machine the man tiny said that's one way you're cheating yourself it's not your machine it's your water that soap won't work in yet many home economists agree that soap is one of the best and least expensive cleaning agents there is and it's easy on clothes and on your hands too you have to use synthetic detergents sin deaths usually just called detergents yet if you had soft water you could use soap or detergents well let's suppose you have soft water in your washer when you put soap in the tiny particles go to work on the dirty fabrics immediately they break up the dirt surround it and float it away then the fresh soft rinse water washes all the particles away leaving your clothes fresh and really clean and since detergents work well in soft water you can use soap or detergents depending on your personal preference but suppose you put soap in your hard water look what happens the soap particles immediately join the hardness minerals instead of going to work on the dirt in the clothes and so what happens is the soap must soften the water instead of washing the clothes it forms a sticky curd that milky substance you saw on the bottle test the soap and hardness particles cleaned to the sides of the tub or still worse stick to the cloth the curd can't remove dirt in fact it actually holds dirt in the clothes so you have to add more soap it's only after all the hardness ions have been dealt with that the extra soap can start to wash but by now the sticky curd is all over everything and furthermore your rinse water is hard to so it reacts with the soap that's left in the clothes and tub and forms more hardness curd the rinsing action flushes out the suspended particles but much of the curd stays behind on the tub or more important spread all over your clothes besides curd can keep your starch from penetrating evenly and the curd can cause annoying irritations when it comes contact with tender skin did your little boy ever have a diaper rash when he was a baby boy yes he did you don't suppose it might have been and water as hard as yours you'd never get close really clean oh now I remember that must be the reason this came with a washing machine yes sucky softeners do a good job of softening wash water but remember it's pretty inconvenient to soften rinse water in automatic washers and a soft water rinsed is just as important to a really clean wash as soft wash water well then let's get back to my detergent it doesn't give me any trouble that's right it doesn't because detergents were developed for hard water and they do a good job but hard water won't let them do as much as they're capable of doing here I'll show you detergents aren't bothered by water hardness at first they go right to work on the dirt breaking it up and floating it away but hardness ions in the water interfere with these tiny particles and cause some of the dirt to be redeposited on the fabric although the hard rinse water can carry away the floating particles it can't budge the redeposited dirt detergents too would work better if you weren't using that old-fashioned water it eventually causes white clothes to discolor even though most detergents contain artificial height neurs and it causes colored fabrics to lose their brilliance but you're cheating yourself in other ways by using old-fashioned water it makes bathing a chore for every member of your family so cold lather when you wanted to and the curd is hard to rinse off the hand of course there's the old bathtub ring you have to scour it off and that doesn't help the glaze finish on your tab [Music] and if all that sticky film stays on the tub think of your skin when you wash your face and think of your hair even though the curd is minimized by some lotion shampoos and soaps it just won't rinse off completely as long as you're using hard water it's the same with glassware and dishes pots and pans silverware and babies bottles the deposits won't rinse off them easily actually curd can be a breeding place for bacteria and eventually hard water deposits can clog up automatic dishwashers besides making hand dishwashing really unpleasant some vegetables are shriveled toughened they actually act as water softeners absorbing the hardness minerals right out of the water and you know hard water can change the good flavor of coffee and tea but hard water causes other hidden problems look what it's done to the inside of your tea kettle goodness and I thought our water was soft too bad more people can't see inside their tea kettles then they'd understand what's happening in their water pipes especially there are hot water pipes this pipe for example had to be replaced after only a few years use in an area of moderately hard water just about the same as yours now imagine what your water heater looks like inside well that's not good for the heater is it I'm sure isn't hard water scales ruined lots of heaters [Music] and besides that it costs more to heat the water through all the scale [Music] why I had no idea that soft water was so important in so many ways well that's just it most people don't but then how could you you've never had the chance to enjoy really soft water if you had you'd know soft water is a dream a dream [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it doesn't have to be just a dream it doesn't not any more there's a way to take the hardness minerals right out of the water in your home with these tiny beads of high capacity resin already at work and hundreds of City hardness reduction plants high-capacity resins are now available for home water softening equipment a home water softener is simply a resin filled container connected in your plumbing system the resin works on a phenomenon of nature called ion exchange to completely remove the hardness from your home water supply these tiny beads are the secret each fairly bristles with ions of sodium and sodium isn't a hardness element when hard water flows through the resin the beads have a stronger attraction for the hardness ions than for their own sodium ions so presto the ions trade places with each other it's as simple as that the hardness ions calcium and magnesium become attached to the beads and in exchange the harmless sodium ions take their place so they call it ion exchange periodically the beads are rinsed with salt water to give them a fresh supply of sodium ions and to flush the accumulated hardness ions down the drain that's all it takes to keep the beads at work high-capacity resins have made home water softeners so efficient and economical that they take their place with other modern home appliances as practical necessities you can buy a home water softener rent it or subscribe to a soft water service well this certainly has been in education I just wish my husband had been here too excuse me there he is now honey I've just been hearing about it you lucky man you you just had us all rich [Music] old-fashioned water hmm I love that film because of its it's trying to describe scientific concepts and choosing beautiful animation to do it and it's it's framing it through the inconvenience of being a housewife you know my clothes are just not getting as clean the baby had a rash my hair is all flat you know the the dealing with the soap scum on the tub all that stuff the dishes the the coffee doesn't taste as good these are all the ills of being a housewife and what do you know water softener solves a lot of them thank God for water softeners I very much love this for that reason that idealic when she gets taken away to this the heaven of water softeners and how everything is glorious and nice and fun I'm gonna change it up a little bit and go straight for some just straight-up TV advertising this is for a car called the Opel cadet and some fun commercials related to them Monday morning and it's your turn to drive the boys to work and you know what that means well thank goodness you own Buicks Opel cadet deluxe station wagon the four-speed stick shift makes driving fun there's plenty of room for passengers plenty of room to carry things the bucket seats are comfortable and it only costs peanuts to run life would be wonderful if it wasn't for well even the Opel cadet can't do anything about a personality problem Buicks Opel cadet the minibrute some people never give up for two years now Buicks Opel cadet has faced an elephant in a tug of war and lost this year Buicks 1969 Opel cadet is facing an elephant again this time in a parking competition aah both contestants have spotted the parking place smoke the spunk of Buicks 1969 Abu cadet it's the new four ability it's spirit its burn it's not even going to be close in a daring maneuver uux 1969 over wins by a trunk which incidentally is quite roomy Buicks 1969 opal cadet it's a winner do occur that the mini Pro Buicks 1969 Opel cadet with the same beautiful bucket seats you loved last year exactly the same roomy inside seating five nice people and remember the beautiful styling we had last year it's the same this year and throws the spunky engine that gives you lots of miles to a gallon plus the same kind of economy as last year but also [Music] transmission is now available fully automatic gloriously smooth to make the Opel even easier to drive [Music] you that last commercial was so great it was like well we don't really have a whole lot to offer except well we have a time on automatic transmission so what can we do like didn't they just blow it out over the top with that excitement of that automatic transmission I mean it was a big deal having driven a stick shift on cars from the 80s I'm sure that I have an automatic transmission and know a lot so I have two potential films I could show I'm not sure which one I want to show I think I'm gonna show this one this was a another series that we've shown several films from this is inside out which was shown on public television and was made by public television stations across the u.s. mostly in the east and these are open-ended and they tell emotional stories and this one is really great it's called someone special under the supervision of MIT national instructional television it's national instructional television series the series and related materials were developed and supported by 32 educational agencies with additional support from Exxon corporation [Music] okay now what's 2 times speak you know that's not 7 David 2 times 3 sick alright ok I have 2 times 3 is 6 what do you go from there I had a teacher once name is Simpson and I thought she was the prettiest lady in the world you know I think he's on purpose write it down I think you knew that all along beautiful did everyone see that movement you feel like if something told us how to do things that were really fun things like nobody else knew how to do that's it very good ok your left hand around the bar around your fingers no that's a lie all right in your shoulders ahh and step up very good ok baby breathe eyes straight ahead [Music] I used to think about the pretty clothes miss Simpson war with all the pretty colors she looked like pitches and magazines there was one store where I used to look in the winner and make the lead she was there I tried as hard as I could to show her how smart I was don't forget as soon as you finish I took time I paid prior to school just to show her about 30 or 40 years old look at the colors I could beautiful colors do you think od I kept hanging around at this acting like I wanted to look at the time I knew she live with a mother and father but I didn't know where medicine five five five seven seven six every weekend I ride my bike pass a house I kept
