[Music] [Music] well hello mr mayor i certainly enjoyed your talk before the student body today hello mary well thanks i am always glad to speak of the importance of civic responsibilities especially to the youngsters you know there's too much let jaws do it something for nothing thinking going on around these days yes i know hello mr wilson oh hello mr robinson you know it seems to me that you're in a very good position to get to the trend of this merit right in the classroom well as a matter of fact this something for nothing attitude that you speak of used to crop up in my classes all the time now seeing miss robinson reminds me of an experience i had with it once if you have time i'd like to tell you about it it might be encouraging to you are you walking now listen well it all goes back to my first pta meeting now after i was introduced i gave a short talk you know expressing my general approach to economics and has been nice meeting you mr johnson good night it's nice to meet you mrs davis good night i think the board made a very good choice don't you oh i think he's cute well after the meeting we had coffee and sandwiches to help us get acquainted i felt as if i were perched in a glass cage i could almost feel eyes looking me over some of their appraisals i could hear danny don't you and mother want to meet the new teacher i don't want to meet him i don't like him i don't like my daughter being exposed to his horse and buggy horatio alger working wind baloney this pious prejudice against the welfare state is nothing but a front for special privilege i tell you he's the kind of a teacher that blocks progress well please mary that man actually glorifies the personal gain motive and besides that and there it was right down the line it was a shock but i was glad to know at the outset that i must be prepared for such as this you're supposed to be preparing for a new dynamic world daddy please he'll hear you i don't care if he does i have a right to express my opinions that's more than you'll get in his classes now class it's just as important to our economic health that all of us understand the mechanical operation of our economic body and how to avoid behavior injurious to it as a knowledge of the functions of our physical body and the proper treatment of it is to our physical health let's consider then the elements which make up man's material welfare and suppose we analyze now what is involved in building a simple log cabin like this what would we need think again trees come before logs that's right trees all right now what else do we need some elbow grease manpower right human energy what else well a man has to have something to work with doesn't he an axe a song that's right a tool well an axe is easier for me to draw there now this crude artwork illustrates that everything which contributes to man's material welfare is the product of natural resources plus human energy multiplied by tools man works that is produces goods and services by applying his energy to natural resources with the aid of tools the quantity and quality of those goods and services depends upon the quality and quality of the man's energy and the effectiveness of his tools is that clear now the man who works all day long plowing his fields with the help of an ox can probably raise only enough food for his own use but if the farmer works all day long plowing his fields with a team of horses he can increase his food production he can probably raise enough for three families and if the farmer uses a tractor to plow his fields he can raise his food production to enough for five families you can see that since the human energy remains the same in all three of the food examples the increase in man's material welfare is due to the improvement in the tool applied to the job this is a simple illustration to show that man's material welfare has increased according to the increase in the effectiveness of his tools of production and these tools came into being for the simple reason that people wanted to get ahead and they were willing to sacrifice to get the tools is that clear gail people no longer get ahead as individuals they get ahead as cooperative groups not trying to tear each other down but but build each other up no person can be secure economically as long as anybody else is insecure the underprivileged must be rewarded according to their needs and not just according to what they produce class gail is really quoting karl marx who said from each according to his ability do each according to his need what do you think about it sounds fair enough sure everyone has to eat [Music] all right class all right now i want you to think about this really think how it will thank you and we'll talk about it later in our next class i was more worried than puzzled how could i combat this kind of thinking what could i do to get back at the source of indoctrination of students like miss robinson it's my job there must be a way well at least i have until tomorrow well class there seems to be some surprise at the marks on your last test papers as a matter of fact in most cases those are not the correct grades they're simply the result of doing what we talked about yesterday and actually some of you do better work than others some of you might even fail while others get high marks but following this motto we've taken the high marks and divided them up with the low ones that way everybody passes even the poor students that's fine but i don't want my grade cut down i work hard for my marks and i want what i earn i know i did better than this we deserve credit for what we do my dad would cut my allowance the kids with the best grades get the best jobs it just isn't fair well suppose we give you a chance to think this grading system over and continue our discussion tomorrow talk it over with your parents if you want to hello dolly how'd it go today i really don't know mother oh that's a strange answer anything wrong no not really i'm just mixed up that's all what's the matter child well look hmm that is a little great for you dear oh but don't worry about it you probably misunderstood the question it could happen to anyone you'll be able to make it up it's not that mother yesterday the teacher was telling us that american prosperity was based on personal progress and private ownership of tools of production well i got up and said what daddy's always telling me that that real progress could only come when people's needs were recognized by the privileged class well today we got our test papers back with those grades teachers said he was following the rule we all agreed yesterday was the right one from each according to his ability to reach according to his knees this is the last straw i am sick and tired of the nonsense we get from your father around the house all the time from each according to his ability personal progress is the law of the jungle boushua just wait till he gets home and what will you do my love give me kiss what's your dinner now will you listen to me gail go set the table for dinner yes mom no you don't well i'm serious you've got to promise to quit filling this girl's head with all those silly notions that fly right in the face of nature you'll know we want gayle to go to college i don't know about that but even if she goes out to get a job after she's through school she's got to have good marks to get a good job what's this all about anyway she gets good marks doesn't she no she wouldn't if you had your way you'd have everybody knocked down to the same level now wait a minute what's got into you i've got to write any ideas i want yes even at your own daughter's expense well just look at the grades that girl came home with today you'll know she's a better student than that and it's just because her teacher agreed to follow some of your precious ideas oh i hope he's not serious about all this is this your real great gail well this is the great i earned daddy but in order to treat everybody in the class equally the teacher had to subtract 20 from my mark everybody received the same grade 75. that's just passing daddy do you think this is fair should i suffer because some of the other boys and girls don't study hard enough here's your chance to practice what you preach come on gayle let's get dinner on the table gail yes mother it takes a good deal of courage and determination for a man to face the truth when he's wrong when his ideas are found to be unworkable and it takes honesty to admit that you've been passing opinions along without questioning them but mr robinson was basically an honest man and he won out in the struggle with himself deal yes daddy you're not mad at me are you no daddy i want you to tell your teacher mr wilson that i i'm going to apologize to him and thank him i guess i've been preaching something that just can't be practiced it really backfired i'm very proud of you and you're much better than the average and i always want you to be thanks daddy well the next day gail made a little speech before the class that really warmed the cockles of my heart and the whole class agreed with her that incentive is an economic necessity when i asked them what would happen to production if there were no incentive for adult workers they answered that some sort of a policeman would have to make people work how's that for a happy ending it's a wonderful story so beautifully simple you know merit if you were eligible i'd like you to run for city council well thanks mr mayor but i do have a good friend who really knows the score that i'm sure you could interest well your recommendation is good enough for me who is he mr robinson gayle's father well [Music] hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunch time streaming event um that last film was backfire which is a uh it's a pretty interesting film it uh was made by an organization that was very pro american free enterprise and very anti-socialism and was one of the big voices that tried to roll back some of the um roosevelt policies and some of the things that were enacted during the depression and also during world war ii um and so very anti-commie mildly anti-labor um very raw raw usa um anyway so i collect old films and show them to folks like you and i'm excited to be doing this um today and this is week 11 that we've been doing this um and this next film uh shows us what goes on behind the scenes at a supermarket circa 1960s so here's behind the supermarket [Music] it's early in the morning before this large supermarket opens for customers i'm the manager of the supermarket and this is my son johnny this morning i'm going to show johnny what goes on behind the scenes here before the day's business can begin a supermarket is like many little markets or departments all brought together into one big building each department sells a different kind of food one of my jobs i tell johnny is to see that the market has plenty of food to sell i must also see that all the people who work in the market know what to do and that they do their jobs well my first job in the morning is to open the door to the rear loading platform where deliveries to the market are made watch this truck backing in johnny it's bringing some of the food the market will sell [Music] here's a man unloading vegetables and fruit from a vegetable or produce truck the vegetables and fruit are taken to a storage room in the back of the market here they are cleaned it takes a great deal of work to prepare the vegetables so they will be clean enough to sell to customers from the inside of this truck a roller track carries cartons of canned and paper goods into the market a moving belt inside the building carries the cartons to a second floor storage room here they are taken off the belt and stacked on storage shelves until needed johnny watches boxes of frozen food being unloaded from a refrigerated truck one of my helpers explains that a refrigerated truck is like a large icebox on wheels this is the market's frozen food locker frozen food from the truck is put inside this locker room to be kept frozen until it is needed for customers this truck is refrigerated too in it big pieces of meat are brought to the market the meat is hung on hooks from an overhead slide so it can be easily moved the meat is pushed into a refrigerated room to be kept cold and fresh until it is ready to be cut up for sale mr dale my meat department manager shows us the meat he is going to cut today in the meat cutting room the meat is cut to prepare it for sale this meat has been ground into hamburger the cut and ground meat travels on rollers to the packaging and waiting room in this room packages of meats are made ready for selling since food must be kept very clean the packages are carefully wrapped and labeled they are covered with cellophane and then sealed with a hot iron each package is weighed and the weight and price are marked on the label finally the wrapped meat is ready to be put into a refrigerated display case in the front of the market from it customers may choose what they want this case keeps the meat cold and fresh until it is ready to be taken home the vegetables are taken from their storage room as they are needed and attractively arranged in the display cases in front of the market many different kinds of vegetables and fruit too are displayed this shoot carries cartons of canned and paper goods from their upstairs storage room to the market's main floor cans of food are put on the shelves the price is stamped on each can so the customers and the cashiers at the checkout stands will know how much each costs the packages of frozen food are also placed in a refrigerated display case many different kinds of frozen foods are offered for sale meanwhile i check on some signs needed for tomorrow's sale i tell my sign maker what the sale price will be the signs will be used in the windows of the market back in my office johnny sees some of the other work necessary to help run the market this is my secretary she's working on the sales record of yesterday's business i must know how much food was sold the day before so i can order more if it is needed this is my bookkeeper she's adding up some bills for me to pay now johnny how would you like to open the market just push this buzzer [Music] the doors are open here come the customers of the first customers to come in this morning is johnny's mother she's come to do her shopping and to pick up johnny while i go back to work as they shop johnny tells his mother what he's learned about the supermarket how the big trucks come every day bringing different kinds of food to the back loading platform how the cartons of food are unloaded from the trucks and moved to the storage rooms how the vegetables are cleaned how the meat is cut and wrapped to keep it clean how the clerks put the food in the display cases and arrange it on the shelves what the office workers do and some of the things i must do before the customers arrive johnny and his mother have completed and paid for their shopping today johnny's learned that a great many things go on behind the scenes of a supermarket [Music] oops well that always happens i lose track um taking notes um wow that was the 300th film that we've shown over almost well 11 weeks so congratulations everybody for 300 films that's based on a list that i'm keeping of all the films that we've shown and there's some given taken there so it's roughly the 300th film um one of the things i should say that's going on after this is uh the orphans film symposium of which i'm wearing a shirt for from a previous orphans this was orphan's midwest that took place in uh bloomington indiana and um this year's orphans was supposed to take place in amsterdam at the eye museum which is their film archive um but that didn't happen uh and it's i'm sad i was tentatively gonna go but maybe not because it's expensive but obviously nobody's going um so it's all being done online which is a great opportunity for you to watch this stuff this amazing stuff stuff that has been unearthed people have discovered and learned about the backstory of um about the films and the next that's done in two hour blocks and the next one starts at 2 p.m eastern standard time and features mark quigley who we had as a guest a couple of weeks ago so i'm going to go ahead and put a excuse me i'm going to go ahead and put a link to the orphans um here in comments on facebook and youtube and um this is the sounds of copying and pasting i know you love it anyways there's there's fascinating stuff i watched this morning some great footage uh including some stuff that uh some people that we've worked with and digitized things for over the years uh and that stuff is actually on i think that first two hour block is online so it's something to watch um speaking of odd and orphaned materials this is something i got on ebay years and years and years ago and i really love finding films like this because this is it's really strange it um and i think it's for a commercial but it's the raw footage and outtakes uh and i so i called it dixie cup magician it doesn't really have a title it's just the raw footage and it is silent so um i would play some music but every time i've done that um the copyright hammer has come down and so i'm i'm just gonna let this run silent so here's a dixie cup magician i love that film every time i watch it uh the color is beautiful it's it's kodachrome so it's uh beautifully shot and it's raw material so there was no uh soundtrack at all um the sound would have been recorded separately on a tape this next film is for all you that are looking to be church ushers this gives you some basic pointers on how to do this enjoy whenever people gather in churches there's a need for dignity and quiet that is conducive to worship but occasionally things happen something goes wrong when this happens it calls for prompt action from one train to meet such situations the church usher [Music] the minister as prophet spiritual leader and preacher has the most important role in the worship life of the church he must direct the several activities of the service and create an atmosphere which will help the people achieve a spirit of worship in most churches the minister is assisted by ushers as doorkeepers in the house of the lord and assistance to the minister they have an important function to perform too but without careful planning and preparation the ushers can fail to be an asset to the minister and the service of worship he is directing they can even create more disturbance than order they may even become a disturbing element in the service such a simple thing as the way ushers are dressed can create an atmosphere of harmony and order but if each one is clothed differently the impression is one of confusion and disharmony well let's go back to the beginning and see how this should be done [Music] often the usher provides that all important first impression to the arriving people his appearance is important what the ushers wear may be a matter of decision made by the ushers and the minister in some informal congregations it may be proper for ushers to be coatless in the summer in others the proper mode of dress may be similar colored suits or even formal coats and ties so long as the apparel fits in with the manner of dress of the congregation and the dress of all the ushers is similar good taste can be the criterion uniformity of dress can also be a means of identification another means of identification is the small lapel flower one of the ushers should be selected as the head usher he may be selected by the minister the worship committee official board or board of deacons he holds a position of trust and importance and should be a person of mature judgment with talent for leadership it is his job to see that there are enough ushers on hand at every service to assign the ushers their individual stations to work out the procedures for directing special services and to instruct the other ushers in their duties an important part of the usher's duties is seating the persons as they arrive as persons come the ushers should find out how many are in the party that are to be seated together he will ask them to follow him down the aisle to a place he has selected the usher will stop by the pew in front of the one the people are to enter and turn to face them as the people enter the pew and not before the ushers should give them a bulletin he should wait until they are comfortably seated before returning to the northx for the next group if the people indicate that they would prefer a seat other than the one the usher has selected the usher should allow them to sit wherever they like always there are those who arrive after the service begins to avoid disturbing the service the ushers should suggest that these wait in the northx for a few moments the usher may be guided by instructions in the church bulletin indicating when late arrivals may be seated if possible seats should be saved at the rear of the church so that late comers can be seated without disturbing the congregation or embarrassing the late arrivers it is helpful if the usher can give them a hymnal open to the proper place so that they can join in the service immediately as the service continues those ushers stationed near the rear should remain at their stations they should look after the physical comfort and well-being of the congregation as inconspicuously as possible if a person becomes ill during the service the quick and quiet action of an usher is needed to avoid disturbing the congregation or embarrassing the sick person an usher should stay with the sick person until it can be determined what should be done in some cases it may be necessary to telephone for a doctor or an ambulance in some churches an agreement is reached with a physician in the congregation that he may be called out of the sanctuary if needed the actions of the ushers can emphasize that the offering is a solemn act of worship the ushers should not do anything that will call attention to themselves the keynote here is dignity and poise normally each usher will receive one plate and will proceed to an assigned aisle and begin passing the plate along the row of worshippers his partner at the other end of the pew will pass his plate down the next row each usher will remain at the end of the pew where his plate is being passed until it reaches the opposite end he will then move to the next row to receive the plate that has arrived there he will then skip one row and start passing the plate he has received down the next few [Music] if the pew is not filled with people so that the plate can be passed easily along the pew the usher may simply offer the plate to those near the end of his aisle and go on to the next few holy communion is received at the front altar the head usher must work out some plan for moving the people easily to the front and then back to the seats he will need to know how many persons the altar can accommodate at a time he will want to designate certain and i'm just missing my cues today um what a great film i think that was an usher well definitely not sure during weddings but uh usher um once and i learned the whole collection plate thing and so the idea with this is that you would show it to the new group of ushers uh who were assigned um and i'm guessing that this would be for a big church because uh someone to to afford the film and then to realize that this is an issue and to navigate you know hundreds of people uh who are trying to sit or are coughing or have babies that are loud or collection plate and communion logistics um anyways i love i love this film great great thing uh this next film shows our class exploring the moon enjoy [Music] food water air do you know what all this means it means that our class is going to explore the moon not really of course we're just going to pretend two of us will be leaving for the moon soon what do moon travelers need for their trip they need spacesuits of course they also need air because there isn't any air on the moon and they need water because there isn't any water there either and of course they need food because they'll be gone many days can we make a model to show the imaginary trip we'll take to the moon yes this represents the earth if the earth were this size then the moon would be only this big the distance from the earth to the moon is about as far as 10 trips around the world about two hundred and fifty thousand miles the trip will begin on earth we'll use a spaceship with rocket engines the rockets will blast off in just a few minutes the ship is going about 25 000 miles an hour now we can shut off the engines earth's gravitation starts slowing the ship but it is going fast enough to coast all the way to the moon it will take about two and a half days to get there then the ship will be turned around the retro rockets will be fired and the ship will settle down to its landing place on the moon to help them make the trip the two moon explorers will take a map which shows how they will travel from the earth to the moon now they are ready for their make-believe trip all right are you ready to pretend with us in the spaceship our class has made then imagine our travelers are in a real spaceship and ready to blast off here we go [Music] the spaceship travels faster and faster the space travelers can see where they're going through the view scope on the instrument panel here's their first view of space here are the stars and there ahead is the moon this signal means their ship will soon be traveling 25 000 miles per hour now engines off let's look at our space map here's where they are now for two and a half days they will coast at great speed through space to the moon as they get closer to the moon they can see it better and better they can see the dark places and light places that make the moon seem to have a face when you look at it from earth through the ship's telescope they see the light-colored places more closely these are the highlands of the moon the moon is very rough here the dark colored places are much smoother it's easy to see the holes called craters in these dark flat parts of the moon long ago people thought the dark parts were water so these places were called seas even though we know there isn't any water on the moon we still call these places seas around the seas we find the high mountains of the moon there are craters all over the moon in the smooth seas and the rough islands here's a large one there are craters of all sizes on the moon now nearly two days have passed where are the travelers now here almost all the way to the moon this far away from the earth earth's gravitational pull is very weak while the moon's pull on them is becoming stronger soon the moons pull on their ship will make it move faster toward the moon but what's that radar warning things are moving through space just ahead of the ship meteoroids they're big rocks that could be dangerous if they hit the ship meteoroids may have made many of the craters on the moon the meteoroids have passed and the ship is safe the moon is getting closer and closer soon the space travelers will be exploring it the sun is shining on the side where they'll land the sun makes the moon very hot because the moon has no air to shelter it but the traveler's spacesuits will protect them from the very hot sun when it's daytime on one side of the moon it's nighttime on the other side nights on the moon are very very cold if they landed on the night side their spacesuits would also protect them from the cold now they are just a few thousand miles from the moon it's time to get ready to land don't forget the air tanks they'll need them when they leave their spaceship the moon's gravitation is pulling them closer and closer faster and faster the signal to fire the retro rockets and slow them down should come any second now all right fire and prepare for a landing on the moon now their ship is on the moon be careful climbing down the ship's ladder [Music] look out [Music] falling isn't as dangerous on the moon as it is on earth the moon's gravitation doesn't pull you as much if you weighed 42 pounds on earth you'd weigh only 7 pounds on the moon that's why it's fun to jump you feel like you're floating look at the sky and you'll see another thing that's interesting about the moon [Music] you see the stars even though it's daytime here's something else that's interesting about the moon you can't just talk to someone who is nearby sound travels through the air but there isn't any air on the moon so the space traveler has to use his radio to tell his friend to look at something in the sky there's the earth 250 000 miles away and 93 million miles away over there is the sun we know the sun makes day and night on the earth just as it does on the moon but daytime on the moon is two weeks long nights are two weeks long too now the explorers are going up to the top of the hill they're on from here they can see the parts of the moon they saw through the view scope when they were in their ship over there are distant mountains many miles high there's a high cliff they didn't see that before far off they see big craters nearly a hundred miles across and little craters nearby just a few feet wide and here's one of the seas of the moon but there isn't any water in it they can see that exploring the moon is a wonderful adventure as the moon slowly turns the part they are on is turning away from the sun the cold night is coming now it's time to go back to earth their exploration of the moon is over the rockets are firing and we're on our way home again [Music] and finally we're back on earth again right in our classroom the trip was fun now that these travelers are back the others in our class want to ask them many questions about their make-believe trip even when you're only pretending there's much to see and much to learn when you explore the moon [Music] so if i had seen this film as a kid my head would have exploded i really really like this film a lot um what i like about it is it just drills right into the imagination of you know having little kids go to the moon and like well what if i was one of those little kids and what would i experience and and it slowly throws in some science facts uh that make it really interesting and just lodge in there you remember them because you're so invested in this in this experience and this travel and you want to do it um what's the color of this film is really quite nice i i can't think of many cornet films from that time period that just give me goosebumps where i'm like whoa that's awesome um so kudos to whoever did that um all right uh this next film is uh made by aaa uh and it talks about the final factor what are all the factors that lead to a car accident uh these are not gory these are um dramatizations and so there's no dead bodies in this um this is not uh highway safety films this is uh aaa all right enjoy final factor [Music] every time we drive there are factors that work that could contribute to an accident [Music] the minor driving errors that we all commit are factors they can build gradually or suddenly pop up anywhere anytime in any type vehicle most drivers can handle at least one such factor many can cope with two even three successfully and some even more but these drivers all experienced and cautious are about to face emergencies emergencies not necessarily caused by violations of the traffic laws but by the addition of that one factor that they cannot handle safely [Music] this is the final factor we can get an idea about how factors add up and combine by looking at this familiar situation two drivers at the scene of a minor collision many of the factors that led to this accident will never even be known by the drivers involved let's see what those factors really were factor one was contributed by jane hoffman jane is always nervous driving her expensive car especially when getting on an expressway and is often just a little too careful the driver of this car already on the expressway is not honoring the merging traffic sign and allowing jane to enter the flow of traffic he is creating factor two jane edging up decides at the last minute that she can't make it and stops meanwhile behind her bob kaplan assuming that jane did enter the expressway turns to check traffic for his own entry and that's factor three following closely behind bob kathy brewer now adds the final factor she chooses this moment to change cassettes in her tape deck at the exact moment bob hits his brakes finally seeing her opportunity jane entered the expressway unaware that she had anything at all to do with bob and kathy's collision if any of the four drivers had eliminated the factors they created the accident might have been avoided factors do have a way of building up watch as they build for benjamin walker returning with his wife from a weekend in the country factor one ben walker is tired it's been a long day he's been on the road since late morning he knows he should stop but he has to get home it's also dark and that's factor two factor three ben's wife who's also tired is resting on his shoulder this limits ben's control of the steering wheel factor four ben's wagon is overloaded ben doesn't know it but that extra weight is causing his low beam headlights to shoot high blinding the oncoming drivers they respond by flicking their bright lights trying to signal ben to dim his ben doesn't understand his brights aren't on and then the final factor one driver retaliates by blasting his brights at ben momentarily blinding him [Music] [Applause] fortunately it isn't serious but if any or all of the factors that caused this had been eliminated ben and his wife would have gotten home a lot sooner often an emergency situation develops and there's no one but yourself to blame for contributing all the factors take neil berman for instance neil is a pretty good driver but he occasionally takes risks up to now he's been lucky in dealing with these factors safely this time however it will be different factor one the weather has made the road slippery and treacherous factor two neil anxious to reach his destination sees no need to slow down factor three he's also unfamiliar with these roads and that map he's clutching is a distraction from his full attention to the road factor four neil is driving on almost bare tires and on a road like this if the brakes are applied suddenly he'll skid neil's dirty windshield is making visibility difficult factor five the worn out wiper blades are making it even worse still neil feels confident that he can handle these factors safely and he probably can but when we add the final factor an unexpected construction barricade which perhaps should have been more clearly marked but if neil hadn't taken so many risks he would have been better prepared to safely handle this emergency most accidents do occur when we're close to home and always when we least expect them case in point betty corwin on her way home from the shopping center with her three children betty knows that it could be dangerous not having little jennifer safely harnessed in the front seat betty isn't even wearing her own safety belt she says it limits her movements especially with two active kids in the back seat these will be factors one and two betty's not really driving fast although maybe a few miles above the posted speed limit but with these road conditions it's too fast factor three knows that she should keep her eyes on the road at all times but she has to keep an eye on her kids too and that's factor four betty's inattention to the road now let's escalate that rough housing in the back seat factor five [Music] and to this we add the final factor [Music] [Applause] who would have expected a bicycle out in weather like this and true the child should have been more careful before riding so quickly into the street luckily there were no injuries but it could have been much much worse how could this have been avoided now betty is safely belted in and jennifer is secured in an approved automobile safety seat even the two kids in the back are wearing safety belts and betty has provided a quiet activity to occupy them to eliminate other factors betty notes the road conditions and drives a little slower by so doing betty can now handle the only factor left to cope with she can stop in time without fear of endangering anyone in this emergency situation many times it is other drivers who contribute the factors factors that you are unable to control of course you too can be the other driver the car on your left is driven by phil cates phil always uneasy on a thruway is unsure of where his exit is and drives in the center lane that's factor one next to phil in the truck is ken gordon ken is not used to driving a truck and his heavy load is slowing him down a good deal more than he expected and a slow driver especially in a truck should never be traveling in the left lane forcing other drivers to pass on the right ken will contribute the second factor the car directly behind ken trying to pass is driven by beth wayson beth is rushing to a job interview and has waited too long before deciding to change lanes and pass ken on his right beth will contribute factor three pulling alongside bed is john kimball john is following behind phil's car much too closely and this is no time to be distracted either john adds factors four and five all these factors are building up but let's see what happens when the final factor is introduced phil has found his exit too late [Applause] [Music] [Applause] phil cates concerned only with getting off the thruway is not even aware that he contributed the final factor this emergency might have been avoided if just one of these drivers had eliminated the factors they created for example if ken gordon had been in the right hand lane where he belonged beth would not have had to try and pass him on the right or if beth had changed lanes earlier instead of at the very last minute she could have avoided the emergency john might have noticed the distance between his car and fills if he had been watching the road instead of beth if he allowed more space he wouldn't have had to swerve into beth's lane when phil slammed on his brakes and phil besides being in the wrong lane he should have gone on to the next exit once he missed his which would have prevented a potentially fatal emergency all these drivers have taken risks risks that they have taken before and yet have managed to drive safely these risks become factors which when combined with other factors could create emergencies remember this next time you drive you may be able to cope with one factor probably more but the more factors you consciously eliminate for yourself the better prepared you'll be to cope with that one factor that's beyond your control the final factor that was great yeah there was a uh tubular bells type of feel at the beginning that mike oldfield um song that was used in the exorcist um of made it all a little creepier than it than it was um so i have a couple of films that deal with uh the anatomy of what leads up to a crash and um some of them are the highway safety films there's wheels of tragedy which basically gives a backstory and shows what leads up to the horrifying uh and gory actual footage of bodies being pulled out of car and truck wreckages so this is a common thing that shows up in a lot of films but uh thanks people for tuning in today on
