foreign foreign welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show I'm skip Alzheimer and we watch old 16 millimeter films um that was an interesting film to me because it's it was made probably in the 30s um and it documents this woman making a woolly dog out of leftover stuff and it's one of these things where I can see the value of it uh but who who rented this like excuse me I mean part of this is it works if you have those discarded materials so to run it and show it to a room of 20 people or 10 people they have to have access to those discarded materials Plus somewhere in the catalog it doesn't list what discarded materials you need to make this woolly dog so I you know it's it's just kind of an interesting thing if you sit down and kind of think about it you're like who showed this film like what was the point behind it I mean ultimately I know the point behind it but it it just in the the actual use of it it doesn't make any sense to me but that's that's how we go here I love it so that I Delight in showing stuff like that where I'm like huh what okay sure whatever uh here's a uh from Craig Baldwin who is uh amazing underground filmmaker who's actually his work and life is being celebrated in San Francisco I think this weekend uh they're releasing a book a 500 page book about his work um called Avant live and uh so anyways he's been sending me films to scan uh and this didn't have a title so I don't know much about it beyond what it's about so here's a Untitled German newsreel enjoy the monks were Brewing their special beer here by the year 10 40. Ryan Stefan has had a brewing College here for several centuries today it's one of the Departments of Munich's Technical University modern scientific Laboratories now exist in this former Benedictine Monastery mastering these age-old Brewing Secrets requires eight semesters of study and students from all over the world come to Bayern Stefan to earn their engineering diplomas as Brewmasters Brewing is an old art records of it in Babylon and Egypt date back to the year 3000 BC beer was originally made utilizing specially soaked bread whereby fermentation occurred uncontrolled and its success or failure was more or less a question of chance ripe germs of wheat were then used for a while but today's recipes call for malt hops yeast and in most cases The Secret of that extra special taste the water the state's testing and experimentation organization the largest of its kind in the world advises over one thousand breweries in Germany and abroad the staff also teaches the Brewing of American beers and Czechoslovakian pills one Department Of The Institute tests a variety of malts before they are used in brewing and the Newfound knowledge helps to improve still more the quality of the beer in weinsteven research and production assist one another the state-operated brewery is located right next to the Institute in one building water treated malt is mashed as the Brewers say the future beer gets its peak and see through the filtering of this Mash a feeder adds Hops and the whole mixture is then cooked in the kettle at exactly 212 degrees Fahrenheit the spicy mixture is then cooled yeast is added then placed in the refrigerated fermentation Cellar and it's during this stage that the alcohol and carbon dioxide develop the next stage is the storage Cellar the beer undergoes a second fermentation and further refines itself or for those of you who may be experts it enables itself The Cellar Master continually tests each batch following storage the beer is then poured into kegs and bottles the lion Stefan Brewery produces nine varieties of beer including normal light beer a reference to its color and definitely not to its alcoholic content the dark so-called strong beer and their special champagne wheat beer and the history books show that beer production the world over is based upon the experience in fermentation contained in the recipes of this old Bavarian monastic Brewery foreign the day begins with loosening up exercises in front of a mirror this was followed by seven to eight hours of severe training these future ballerinas students of Isabella vanichi one of Germany's best-known ballet teachers expect and receive four strenuous years of training [Music] Madame Venice has directed the ballet school of the Hamburg State Opera Company for 15 years now in addition to complete Mastery of the body she explains ballerina's memories must be equally as well trained there are no prompters in ballet [Music] as a training exercise the Hungarian get one past the strong Bavarian defenseman but to no avail the Hamburg team won a great deal of respect from the home crowd for its courageous efforts right up to the final whistle but the Munich men go into the lead with a beautiful shot some 20 yards from the goal naveria wins 2-1 putting them into the semi-finals and um wow that actually was more than just about beer uh fascinating but I know so little about where it came from why it was made it's about obviously about a German uh and European um things but it's obviously in English and uh and for Americans so you know why does that exist was it a promotional thing for Germany uh was it like one of these newsreels that have they're kind of sponsoring um other things who knows I don't know it could be a military thing uh Army signal Corps but one thing I know is subtraction is easy and this film tells us why enjoy foreign Billy Thompson likes to play ball just as you and I do but that ball it isn't much good anymore is it Billy would like to buy a new ball but there are some other things he needs to buy first and he's not sure he has enough money Billy has counted his money there's two dollars and 23 cents he needs some paints that will cost 65 cents and he wants a bat that costs 1.29 added together they would cost 1.94 cents that's the same as 194 pennies for the paint and the back and he has 223 pennies can Billy buy the ball too how much will it cost Billy doesn't really have the ball yet but let's pretend it's here where we can see it oh that's a Dandy ball and it will cost 75 cents 75 cents will Billy have enough left to buy the ball just how much will be left after he buys the paint and the bat he needs 194 pennies and he has 223 pennies so Billy can subtract to find out how much will be left say just a minute Billy that was interesting but just what did you do let's make sure everyone understands how to subtract let's do it with your money on the floor the money is the same as 223 pennies here are one two three four five six seven eight nine ten pennies but it would take really a long time to count all the pennies and put them in piles of ten there ten pennies in each pile and three pennies left over now ten pennies are the same as one dime so we'll change each pile of pennies to a dime and put them in piles of ten with two dimes left over but 10 dimes are the same as one dollar so let's change each pile of Dimes to one dollar two dollars and two dimes and three pennies and that's what our number stands for the three stands for the three pennies this too stands for the two dimes and this too stands for the two dollars this is the unit's place this is the tens place and this is the hundreds place now what is the number we want to subtract 194. that's the cost of the paints and the back just what does 194 stand for the four stands for four pennies what does benign stand for what does the one stand for all right now let's subtract four from three we can't take four pennies away from three we need more pennies before we can subtract let's change one of the dimes to a pile of ten pennies now we have one dime and 13 pennies and with the numbers we'll do the same change one of the tens to ten units there is one ten left we can subtract four from thirteen four from 13 leaves nine now we must subtract the ten nine tens from one ten we have only one dime we can't take nine away so we'll need more dimes let's change one of the dollars to a pile of ten dimes now we have one dollar and eleven dime and with the numbers we'll do the same thing change one of the two hundreds to ten tens that leaves one hundred now we can subtract nine tens from eleven tens nine times from 11 dimes leaves two dimes next we'll subtract the hundreds one hundred from one hundred leaves nothing how much is left two times and nine pennies 29 cents two tens and nine units 29. now let's see if we can subtract again with just the numbers on the Blackboard four from three leaves will have to change one of the tens to ten units we have 110 left now we can subtract 4 from 13. now nine tens from one ten will have to change one of the hundreds to ten tens leaving one hundred now we can subtract nine tens from eleven tens then one hundred from one hundred and that's how much money he will have left but Billy should check to be sure he didn't make a mistake how should Billy check well let's see suppose from these nine pennies we subtract four pennies how many are left five of course now if we add four pennies to the five that are left how many do we have that's right nine pennies so whenever we subtract we can check our answer by adding now we'll add 194 and 29 there Billy checked his subtraction by adding and he found the same number he started with so he must have subtracted right and now we know that Billy will have 29 cents left after he buys the paint and the back can he buy a new ball too well the ball will cost 75 cents and Billy will have only 29 cents left that's not enough is it so Billy can't buy the ball until he has saved some more money if we subtract we'll know how much more Billy will have to save nine from five what's new change one of the tens to ten units nine from fifteen is six we used one of the tens so we have only six tens left two tens from six tens is four how much more money will Billy need to buy the ball now what should Billy do to check and be sure he didn't make a mistake why check by adding 29 and 46. let's all add with Billy now we know that Billy subtracted right Billy subtracted and found out that he can buy the set of paints and the bat and still have 29 cents left and he found that as soon as he is saved 46 cents more he can buy a ball too we found out how to subtract we know that this is the unit's place and this is the tens place and if we don't have enough units to subtract we can change 110 to 10 units subtraction is easy [Music] seem to be some uh Some Noise about uh that uh people not a fan um so here's leave school and be a fisherman like my father I'm sure that's what you want because our family have always been fishermen [Music] [Music] it's our custom that one day my brothers and I will be given Baba's boat he has been teaching me about fishing how to mannette where to set them the ways of the sea the tides and the wind are unhappy as they are catching less and less apparent enough fish these days and when you do get them you don't make enough money some say there are too many fishermen papa says pollution of the sea might be the reason me I don't know if fishing is finished her birthday it's like his story repeats in itself you see Simi was once famous for sponges then they run out the puppy the sponge divers the merchants they left see me on the boat building died my grandfather tells me that Simi was the richest island of the daughter Carnivor most days we built the best boats had the finest houses shops and Town Square and the drama theater but that's all possible please all of our goods come to us by faith and most of our food too the boats we call them coming food but they grow up empty we have nothing to send away there aren't any factories here and we don't make anything to sell to other countries not all of our meat is protein there are a few little farms in the valley above head thirst of the island is Baron and Rocky still they did manage to grow all sorts of things before perhaps it's too difficult now or people just aren't interested anymore mama says some things might be changing here but there's one thing that won't ever change and that's it the women of sin they will never sit outside with the cafes and Never Never Smoke in public she's probably right it's always been that way that's what the men should say when the Bells Fall slowly the whole town knows someone has died the funeral starts from the house and passes into the streets the coffin is left open so that we all get the chance to say our last goodbye [Music] after this it's custom for the women of the family to our blood for at least three years and sometimes for the rest of their life our church teaches us that the dead go to a special waiting place until God chooses who will have lives forever we have many priests here in sin that's because we all go to church father's fingers has the church of Saint evangelismos Around The Bay at yalos like us father sing us as a large family but he's lucky priests are paid by the government so he doesn't have to worry too much about money all his sons have left him to go and work in Australia except alexandros he has a good job in the carpenter so he won't leave good afternoon and like you notice it there's a loudspeaker on the town hall roof and the mayor often makes announcements to us about town Affairs you know sometimes it doesn't rain here for nine months and the mayor is trying to get water pipe to our houses from the new town many people are short of money and there's not much work here but at least everyone has a house so you can ask the Town Council for one of the government loans to improve your house then you can have tourists to stay our mayor is in his main way of keeping in contact with the government in Athens [Music] the donkeys spend their whole lives carrying goods especially to hurry up the upper part of the town they even know the way better than their masters Hustle octopus and Squids are great to eat but they're very tough so we beat them to make their flesh nice and tender then to make them even softer we rub them on the key until the Milky fluid comes out [Music] when Papa has a good catch he sells it in front of the old customs house after bath catches he keeps saying if only some fishermen hadn't used Dynamite a few years ago we might have had more fish now is one of my father's best customers he buys for his tourist restaurants he always wants lobsters because all the tourists like them but we hardly ever catch lobsters [Music] every summer more tourists come I like watching them they're quite different from us foreign for a few hours only and at three o'clock they go away again it's all over [Music] [Applause] policemen on that island are not like the ones I see on television where the police are always chasing gangsters with guns fast cars and helicopters nothing exciting like that's ever happens here there's never any bankruptcies well I suppose we don't really have any banks anyway there's no fear of any stealing from shops or houses [Music] all swimming women are very proud of their Atari that's their familiar rooms my mind's the same she never uses them though they've been passed on the family mother to daughter for hundreds of years we've got one sister Anita she'll get the house and all these copper things for her Dowry when she gets married my brothers and I will be okay because we live in our wife's houses for cousin Maria she's got three sisters so she'll only have half a house when she marries foreign [Music] through the week we have religious studies at school and on Sunday the whole school goes to church we all go to the same church as we're all the same religion that's Greek Orthodox there are over a hundred chapels or churches on our Island and there's only three thousand people love [Music] everything in our church there are a lot of free space we celebrate each one with a procession of Partners and the corners on the feast of Saint haranamos we show our Respect by kissing the silver Icona it's got some of Saint haralombuses bones inside the evangelio is The Golden Book of the story of our religion it's written in the earth Greek just as our services are spoken in the old creeks [Music] [Music] hello everyone loves the real fish after the service we always have Greek Donuts and the grown-ups have wine too [Music] [Music] my great grandma and my grandmother live at the very top of the hills behind the village so we only come up to see them about once a week great grandma is 85. her family have been Farmers for as many years as Abbas family have been fisherman both grandmothers still work on the land every day mama says don't be a farmer in Simi it's even harder than fishing I think she would really like me and my brothers to be doctors or teachers but there's only one doctor here and very few teachers so we couldn't stay in swimming [Music] near the house Grandma collects honey from herpes and keeps God especially while they have young ones but soon the grass will get all burnt up in the long dry Summer and the gods will have to be herded into the mountains to find crazy oh foreign [Music] [Music] some go forever to America Canada Australia New Zealand nearly everyone in the world many of the men go through Athens to work from the big ball to school one over half of seamless men are away working on the ships their wives and families wait and wait sometimes the men are away for a year or more of course they send money back but it's not the same as having your father at home once there were 10 times more people living here but now their houses are empty some just fell into ruin when people didn't return others were born in the last World War to film in a kind of a general film database and it says 10 times empty and then uh it says Greece um and the plot description is the same as this but then there's this Australia I really I'm not quite I
