so so so so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films i am not at the archive today i am just like the people in the film we just saw i'm on vacation for a couple of days um at the beach so um but of course you know i have to show films i still enjoy this is the the fun part of my day so i'm not gonna stop doing it because i'm on at the beach um so but we're just at a different location uh so today uh i'm gonna show show films in a series there's a film series that encyclopedia britannica did called joy's joy of growing and part of that they had a safety series a couple safety films and then they had health films and we've shown um several of them a couple of them actually probably three of them but i found recently because we're doing a job for encyclopedia britannica where we're scanning all of our encyclopedia britannica films uh i found a film that we have not seen and it is a lulu uh this whole series is kind of a lulu so we're going to get started with on some of these you have seen recently uh some of them over the last couple of years when we've been doing this but um the last one i'm going to show is you've not seen before and and believe me i know that we haven't seen it before so here is eye care fancy enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] you all have beautiful eyes really very beautiful eyes and they're one of the most important parts of your body without them you couldn't see all the beauty and the wonder of the whole world the sky the trees people cities especially the cities your eyes are most important to you there it's important for you to be able to reach signs like these your eyes help you to do many things in fact everything you do you use your eyes to do from the time you get up in the morning to the time you go to bed at night let me show you [Music] you shouldn't rub your eyes too much why not because your eyes are very delicate and you can hurt their surfaces by rubbing them see how careful that cameraman is with his lens well that lens is a thousand times dirtier than your eyes are that's just how delicate they are and that's why you have to be so careful with them [Music] what's wrong i have something in my eye come with me the safest way to remove a speck from your eye is to rinse it under cool running water now come on put your hand down here and then put your face all the way down to it try to blink it out is it gone yep there are hundreds of different ways people see the world because your eyes are so complex if just one little tiny thing is wrong your whole vision could be thrown off this is called peripheral or side vision it means that you can't see things in the center very clearly this is called central or tunnel vision you can only see things in the center clearly this is what is called nearsightedness it means that you can't see things in the distance very well this is what the world looks like if you're farsighted if everything was dark you wouldn't be able to see anything at all but when there is light you can see the light goes through the lens of your eye and focuses an image on the back of your eye on a place called the retina in some people's eyes the light isn't focused on the right place the light is focused here instead of on the retina they need glasses see why glasses can focus the light on the right place and bring everything back into focus like this there are glasses for each of these kinds of vision glasses are very important tim would you please spell the second word from the top i can't see it too well is something wrong with your eyes i don't know maybe may i take him to see an eye doctor [Music] doctor this boy can't see too well all right let's take a look at the problem tim is the blackboard easy for you to read or difficult difficult is your reading easy or difficult easy okay so it's only the blackboard that's giving you trouble let's take a look look at the chart now i'm going to look inside your eye keep looking at the chart tim i want you to continue looking through this instrument while we shine the light into your eyes is it getting easier to read for you yes very good now let's block off the right eye and work on the left is the chart getting easier to read again yes fairly good there for you yes and this is about the best there yes with both eyes open the chart is easy for you to read yes here's the prescription for his glasses i'll fill it immediately what kind of rims would you like rims let's see see things far away good when you're young it's often hard to tell if you need glasses or not but if you are getting headaches and can't see too well or don't feel good when you try to see something tell your teacher or your parents you may need glasses i do for reading i couldn't read a thing without them of course the best thing you can do for your eyes after keeping them open all day is to give them at rest at night and close them and go to sleep [Music] [Music] hey [Music] yeah wow okay that was odd um and again i am showing uh these that i've shown before and that intro um is certainly in some films that i have shown a lot in live shows etc uh the next film that i have is they they get crazier um and so uh we're doing uh the next film is dirt witch cleans up enjoy [Music] [Music] wow [Music] [Music] it in reverse light will be day and day will be night right will be wrong and wrong will be right the spotless in the clean i'll make them change before your site [Music] [Music] all right let's go you're there [Applause] it's so dirty i'll see why i got to be the one to feed you million things i could do i'd rather be doing clean up your mess [Laughter] [Music] three down set one three three two nine dirty i am and dirty you'll be and then you'll see [Music] aah i saw what you did oh no one has ever seen me before you didn't have to do what you just did i i never wanted to be different and dirty and a dirty old witch i never wanted to be maybe maybe you could help me would you help me please please help me if that's all you want it sure oh no are you sure yes i'm sure i think i think it will hurt no i do it all the time does your mother say got to clean your fingernails with this brush [Music] this is how you clean your hands [Music] now your feet this is how you do your ears now let's do your mouth we have to do all these things to make you good and clean take a look in the mirror in your face is this really me sure it takes one back to make it look like this [Music] um that was that was so odd um in the slow motion scenes of the kids like going and then them being sprayed off the the weird keyboard sounds while the witch is being bathed by the little girl it's our uh contemporary minds can't handle uh how nuts that film was um [Music] i would be interested if little kids watched it now what would their tape be on this um it is so great and again the reason why i'm showing all these films is because i found the final film in that series um in my collection and i have not shown that yet but before we get to that we're going to show you some clown footage um straight up unadulterated clown footage of a toothache of a clown so enjoy [Music] [Music] okay [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] listen [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] um [Music] come on in [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] wow [Music] come in oh [Music] here's your friend lynn he didn't have any cavities next patient please [Music] oh let's take a picture first a picture of your tooth mr clown hold the film for me [Music] there wasn't that easy uh-huh well mr clown you have a big cavity you'd better take better care of your teeth susie can i have a mirror open real big like an alligator big as you can oh really wow there's the cavity mr clown that's what's hurting let's put that tooth to sleep for you one more time [Music] a little pinch way back there how does that feel that should make it feel better [Music] wide as you can oh don't you worry now real good this will make it feel a lot better there we go now we'll get the candy bugs out of there okay real good you must have been eating a lot of sticky food mr clown did you know that the bacteria that cause decay live in sticky food and raise big families there we are mr clown do you know how to prevent cavities it's important that you keep the inside of your mouth clean at all times huh susie why don't you show them how to do it you should brush or rinse every time you eat you brush your teeth the way they grow down from the top up from the bottom you brush the chewing surfaces and the backs of your teeth do you understand that well mr clown that ought to make you feel better you take care of those teeth and you won't have any more trouble see you on your next checkup goodbye remember rinse or brush after you eat [Music] [Applause] uh [Music] yeah so there's a lot about that film um one somebody thought well kids are anxious about going to the dentist so why don't we show a cli a clown going to the dentist then there's that whole nightmare that he has this kind of weird fever dream um it's it's really something uh you know there's the films in this series really uh amaze me and this last one is is you know maybe not as good as toothache of a clown but we discovered it recently um as part of this process of this project that we're doing for encyclopedia britannica and um i was amazed that i had not watched this like it was in my database i'd walked past it many times and for whatever reason i had not watched it until we did this project so what this tells me is that there's still lots of gems in the archive that we just have we haven't watched yet so this one is about germs and it features some celebrities that you might know enjoy so weird huh look [Music] wow what is it let's go closer [Music] why don't you come in should we have you ever been inside a spaceship come on i wanna look okay okay blink lake excellent just stand right there [Applause] welcome blink blink hi i'm gleek and i'm double gleek bleak gleek blake we're from the galaxy of quadroclicholia and we need your help us our planet is getting too close to its sun someday it will burn up that's why we have to find a new one to live on let's show you around let's go well it may not be safe for us you see we are built quite differently from you and on our last visit here we found some things in your air water and soil that might hurt us microbes they are tiny little living things that you can't see unless you look through a microscope take a look the microscope makes the microbes look much bigger than they really are wow microbes huh you mean these things are all over out there once very much like them all over everything on the earth even on your skin and clothes it would take about five thousand of the biggest microbes to make a line one inch long can they hurt some could hurt you they're too small to bite but they can make you sick there are microbes that hurt you and microbes that don't microbes that hurt you are called germs all these are germs there are three main types of germs the biggest germs are protozoa protozoa are actually tiny little animals now these germs are the second type they're called bacteria they're smaller than protozoa bacteria are tiny plants the third type of germs are viruses they're the tiniest of all so germs are microbes that can make me sick if a lot of germs get inside you they can make you sick how do they do that well we studied your human bodies and found them to be made up of cells like a big chimney is made up of tiny little brick cells are the tiny building blocks that make up your body and your cells are so tiny that you can't see them without a microscope why uh they're hardly any bigger than germs look [Applause] germs can kill your little cells see those little white bars they are germs that got inside a body this is a cell like all the millions of little cells that make up your body and they're trying to get inside the cell they got in and they are hurting the cell so if enough germs get inside enough of yourself you'll feel sick these bacteria inside you can give you a very sore throat strep throat it's called did you ever have a strep throat i did take a look at these these will make you sick too here's a virus that causes colds how do these germs get inside us they get in through an opening in your body like your mouth germs can also ride in on specks of dust when you breathe and look they can enter through your mouth on the liquids you drink we saw you drinking that water yesterday by our glicobean they can also get into your body through a cut or a scratch but i've got it cut and i'm not sick yeah if there are germs all over everything even in the air we breathe how come we're not always sick we don't know we were hoping that you could help us find out why and that's why we wanted you to come in here we want to examine you in our glicoscope when it looks inside your body it tells us what's happening and shows us a picture here wow can i be first okay now we'll find out how your body defends itself against all those germs you have here on earth bye so long first i'd like to take a good look at that human skin of his my goodness fleek it's like a protective glove i don't see how any germs could get through that i'll shoot a few germs into the skin and see nope the germs can't get through the skin let's take a look inside his mouth okay aha his mouth and throat are wet and slimy and germs to try to get in that way get trapped look here there are tiny hair like things they're called cilia and they're in his nose and other air passages look the cilia move in waves and carry the germs right back out what i'd like to see is what's happening to the cut on ross's arm looks like some germs are getting in through that break in the skin covering what are those big things those are white blood cells they're eating the germs right the white blood cells are attacking and killing the [Music] look what the germs is saying the glicoscope is saying that the white blood cells have helpers they're called antibodies antibodies help the white blood cells let's see ah those white blobs are white blood cells and the black dots are germs uh the little black rods are the antibodies his body is formed see how they attach to the germs and make them clump together now the white blood cells can kill them then the antibodies are left behind to help if they're ever needed again so that's how your body fights off germs look what the glicoscope is saying double gleek this is what triplically tells we might find your earth doctors can help you make your own antibodies by giving you shots i'm sure both of you have had shots wow that's so defensive it's a good system but not foolproof there are three ways germs can make you human sick first if you're overwhelmed by a huge invasion of so many germs that your defenses can't stop them all and second if your defenses are weakened like when you're tired third if you haven't yet built any antibodies to help the white blood cells but you can help your body fight germs keeping clean uh like washing your hands before eating that would wash away big armies of germs by getting plenty of sleep so your body will be fresh to fight any germs that do get in and when you get cuts and scratches clean them and put disinfectant on them that kills germs that might try to get in that way good wholesome food gives your body the energy it needs to defend against germs don't put anything in your mouth but food no fingers no pencils they might have a lot of germs on them and finally cover your nose and mouth whenever you sneeze or cough that helps to keep the germs from going to other people and making them sick i'm afraid we wouldn't be able to stay alive here on your planet it's the germs and all those defenses that you have against germs we don't have any of them well thanks a lot for helping us we'll be going now step right over here boys gee i sure wish you could stay sorry bye [Music] bye [Applause] [Music] it's wow um it's possible that that was earlier in the series i don't i haven't actually looked at the copyright uh dates to compare but uh that was indeed michael lookingland also known as bobby brady and billy barty who was pretty much um if you saw a little person in the 70s on television it was probably billy barty um fascinating series man i'm gonna try uh to reach out to the encyclopedia britannica people to see if they have any information about why that series was created and why it got so whacked out with uh dirt witch and toothache because those films are just nuts um thanks for tuning in today we're gonna cut the uh the day a little short because i theoretically am on vacation um but if you like what you saw you know hit the thumbs up button the like button um you know subscribe you can buy us coffee uh i can get coffee here at the beach at ko-fi.com av geeks um and we'll be back tomorrow uh we have a something special planned tomorrow uh i think i might do a lot of special things i don't know i don't know what friday's gonna hold but tomorrow's gonna be a little special so everybody have a great rest of your day i'm gonna go into the ocean bye take care you
