um something changed over the weekend as far as how uh the youtube channel was creating new events and i don't know if it's something i did or something youtube did but basically i created an erroneous event and um hilarity ensued uh thank you rick for the coffee uh you can support any geeks by buying us coffee because sometimes we need it to sort through the intricacies of not only uh running 16 millimeter film uh in the 21st century but also running video in the 21st century um so yeah hope everybody had a good weekend uh that last film was part of a french foreign language series that encyclopedia britannica oh god i'm seeing myself behind myself hold on that's that's not gonna work that is not going to work all right sorry just do this how about that yeah there we go um starting off with a bang here at av geeks uh let's let's think about how to be uh [Music] keep mentally fit um yeah it's pretty great the title's clipped on this but it's still a pretty good film so mental health keep you mentally fit dorothy westerly has a tooth that needs fixing but she's in good health i'd say pretty good help that have helped them stay physically habits of cleanliness good diets exercise and rest but there's another side to good health and that's good mental health comes naturally to most people parents who are mentally healthy bring up the children to be mentally healthy too take tommy clark there he learned the first rule for good mental health a long time ago about not bottling up his emotions now when he works up a head of steam he puts it to work in a useful way instead of holding it inside when you try to do that it's bound to come out in some unpleasant way tommy learned that some years back just after his younger brother was born come on jimmy thomas eat your meat you haven't eaten a bite all day i declare i don't know what's got into you you heard your mother thomas now do it yourself finally his folks sent him to see me there wasn't anything physically wrong with him that i could find so i began to talk with him if you've got something on your mind tommy why don't you talk about it well well [Music] we all have our problems tommy but i can't talk about it of course you can and you know something the more you talk about your problems the easier they are to solve it's bottling things up inside this bad when you feel something if you're mad or afraid or worried you've got to let it out or it'll come out some other way like you lose eight not sleeping now what is it son gosh dr martinson this may sound kind of funny to you yeah i don't think my folks want me anymore they're planning to get rid of me what makes you think that sir i heard them say so one night they thought i was asleep everything was born well it wasn't easy to prove to tommy that he was wrong as in so many cases like this his parents were partly to blame the new baby was taking more of their attention than they realized i got a chance to talk to something that i turned out that they'd been talking about sending tommy to camp for the summer and he misunderstood them well we finally got it straightened out but it taught tommy a lesson that many people don't learn so quickly about not bottling up his emotions he learned that it could be easy to talk to his folks and that he didn't have to hide his lip good night mom good night holly well that is quite a few years ago today that says help him through many a tough spot of course we're talking of simple rules for staying in good mental health and that brings us to the second respecting yourself sounds easy doesn't it but look what happened to bruce matthews he went out for the tennis team a couple of years ago and while he had a lot to learn he had the makings of a fine player but he wasn't satisfied with slow steady improvement oh he expected himself to be perfect right from the start missing a point would make him boil over at himself well the coach finally caught on to what bruce was doing to himself with his demand for perfection sure i think it's fine to keep wanting to improve i understand that but i think you're going at it the wrong way how do you mean well did you ever stop to think how good your game really is yeah after missing that last point that's just what i'm getting at you're worrying too much about the game and you don't enjoy it but coach i know i can do better sure you can but the point is you shouldn't let yourself get mad every time you miss a point even the world's champion can't make every point you can't be perfect you've got to learn to get more pleasure out of this game so take yourself as you are and instead of expecting yourself to be perfect it took a while for bruce to get what the coach was driving at but little by little without setting up one bit to improve his game his skill rather than fret over his occasional miss he's learning that second important habit for keeping in good health good mental health i mean the habit of feeling right about himself along with that goes a third important habit feeling right about other people too that means getting along with others having fun with them being part of the group there's no room for bashfulness in good mental health to look at otto marcol there you'd never guess what he was like a year ago for some reason or other he was convinced that people just didn't like him much he never tried to make friends or to be one of the bunch it was miss reinert who came to otto's rescue i think you'd enjoy getting into one of the school clubs i don't know i really don't have any time i hear they're playing to organize a camera club you could help with that i'm not very good with my camera i don't think they want me in the club of course they would the more the better when you're organizing a club gosh miss reinert you're certainly doing well in chemistry and that's important in photography i don't know chemistry's different from photography i think you'll find they'd welcome a good chemist like you in a camera club but you'll have to do one thing what's that offer to help do all you can to help get the club organized get some other students to join oh i couldn't do that of course you can and you'll find that they are like you as much as you like them i knew about otto's problem because his parents had come to see me about the same thing of course they have to share the responsibility for otto's bashfulness what do you mean george i don't quite get what you're driving in no well i'll tell you art i've been watching you with that kid a long time you're demanding too much from it nobody can be perfect so don't ride him so hard when he does something you don't like remember he's a person in his own right his way may be just as good as your way i do think you've been hard on him at times arthur oh but he doesn't toe the line the way he should he has advantages i never had when i was a boy he has an opportunity to amount to something but let him do it his own way you've got him feeling now he isn't as good as the next fella that's why he hesitates to make friends you know those cases and many others i've known talking with the parents was important in helping to get things straightened out he's learning the third basic rule for good mental health feeling right about other people that means that in any normal group of people there is a feeling of give and take there's an interest in the group as a whole there's no distress or dislike of others just because they happen to be different well there's one more rule for good mental health and i see that nancy's finally learned it well enough to get a diploma that's the habit of doing something about a problem as soon as it comes up gosh what i don't know about the civil war period i even cracked a page in two weeks i'm gonna have to dig into this one too come on over to my house tonight let's study it together oh i just dread getting into it let's put it off till tomorrow well all right tomorrow never came for nancy that quiz dave found her completely unprepared but barbara had faced up to that quiz the day it was announced even so worried about this exam i just can't sleep oh i hope i passed there's no point in worrying about it now nancy not only had double trouble with that quiz she had triple trouble before during and after she'd got busy just as soon as it was announced instead of just worrying about it it would have been a lot easier for her yes people around here are learning some of the basic rules for staying in good mental health first rule is don't bottle up your emotions like love fear anger express them naturally of course emotions like anger have to be expressed with consideration for others above all don't carry a grudge get it off your chest the second rule is to respect your own abilities always try to improve but remember that you're human the third rule is to respect others treat them as friends and finally when the problem shows up face it at once calmly reasonably and honestly and remember that one of the best rules for good mental health is talking out your troubles and problems with someone whose opinion you respect your parents your family doctor your school teacher or advisor your clergyman may be the right person to talk to on many things whoever it may be talking is one of the best tonics there is for good mental health another good time it gives an interesting hobby gives you a way to relax a chance to accomplish something you can be proud of well those are some of the rules for staying in good mental health of course they're just the abcs of a subject big enough to feel whole but as more and more folks get to know these abcs and follow them they're going to be able to look at a group like this someday and feel that they have a greater chance than ever for the kind of happy useful life which will make our world a better place to live in it's kind of spicy but uh still pretty great um a friend of the doctor knows everybody's problems and is happy to tell them to you before hipaa uh was enacted um i have a really nice color print of this film and i haven't i don't know if i've transferred it um it's kind of looking for it recently um but you know what you know i was thinking it's been a while though uh since we've shown a film about steel let's watch a film about steel making enjoy it's got beautiful color many many things are vital to our living and to our standard of living only one but a big one is steel we could do without it but not as well because it does a lot of things for us try naming them sometime you'll find it hard to stop the steel mills are amazing complexes dependent upon mountains and mines of iron ore high grade coke baked from bituminous coal limestone a common stone but as costly as any to transport and utilize making good steel isn't easy it takes the best materials the best machinery the best men men at the blast furnace the open hearth furnace men of science men in the rolling mill men at the electric arc furnace men who are proud to be called steel men it takes raw materials from all over the world to make steel this iron ore may have come from any one of ten states or distant mines in other countries the first step in producing steel is to make iron in the blast furnace raw materials are taken to the top of the furnace in skipped cars loaded at the bottom of the furnace this car carries raw iron ore sometimes the ore is centered or pelletized to facilitate blast furnace operation this skip car carries coke coke produced from coal that may have been mined in any one of 19 states the next car carries limestone it may have been quarried in alabama michigan pennsylvania ohio or utah or coke limestone charging a blast furnace that can produce more than 3 000 tons of mold and iron every 24 hours within the furnace and inferno rages a man controlled inferno of chemical reactions in diagrammatic animation we see blasts of hot air raise the temperature of burning coke to 3600 degrees thereby supplying the heat required for the chemical reactions to take place carbon dioxide is produced and reacts with the excess carbon present to produce carbon monoxide gas that is carried up the furnace near the top of the furnace the temperature is only 700 degrees fahrenheit as the burden settles downward and the temperature increases greatly the lime from the limestone combines with impurities from the ore and the coke and carries them to the bottom of the furnace as slag the slag and molten metal collect in the hearth of the furnace the lighter slag on top the heavier iron underneath every few hours the slag is drawn off through the slag notch several times a day the molten iron is cast from a separate opening [Music] 400 tons of white hot iron at a time for this furnace the gushing stream of iron runs into an insulated transfer car where it is kept molten transfer cars move the molten iron from the blast furnace to the steel making furnaces where the iron is changed into steel here the transfer car tips to pour the liquid metal into a ladle which will carry the hot iron to the open hearth furnace the open hearth furnace is a versatile tool for steel production before the furnace is ready for the molten iron a charging machine loads the furnace with limestone iron ore and steel scrap scrap comes from old automobiles machinery railroad cars steel rails and other pieces of iron and steel that have outlived their usefulness [Music] the ladle of molten iron from the blast furnace is added after the limestone iron ore and scrap scientific controls help the melter meet the most exacting specifications to get a better look at what happens inside the open hearth let's diagram it with the top off we see that the molten mixture is held in an oblong shallow hearth [Music] burners at each end of the furnace alternately send long tongues of flame across the surface of the mixture searing flames raise the temperature of the charge to about 3000 degrees and chemical reactions take place that change iron to steel [Music] the appearance of the slag on a heat of steel is important to the melter there's no substitute for experience it takes a real pro with all the help he can get from scientific instruments to judge when the chemical reactions have gone far enough to give the steel the exact composition required by this time the melter has a lab report which he checks against the production order this heat meets specifications a parameter gives him further information measuring temperatures far beyond the range of an ordinary thermometer that cable hanging from the back of the handle runs directly to the control panel with only a glance the melter has to be able to read and interpret the recordings of precise instruments instruments that tell him what he needs to know with a signal to his crew the melter goes to the tapping side of the furnace that whistle says be alert the tapping hole is located at the rear of the open hearth furnace the man places the shaped charge that will blow out the refractory plug and release the white hot steel the wire from the charge is connected to the battery so the melter watches the steel carefully to be ready to add the alloys that are specified for this particular heat carbon steel can be changed to make steels for special purposes by the addition of such elements as chromium or nickel introduction of oxygen by lance improved the efficiency of open hearth production to a significant degree but its most efficient application is developed today in the basic oxygen process a basic oxygen shop can turn out high quality steel much faster than open hearth furnaces molten iron is charged into the basic oxygen furnace followed by scrap dropped into the mouth of the vessel in the basic oxygen process the chemical and physical reactions take place very quickly after about 20 minutes the nature of the flames confirmed by computer calculations indicate that the reaction is complete and the furnace is ready to pour another important tool of steel making is the electric arc furnace this is used to make stainless and many other special steels scrap is its basic diet after the furnace top is moved aside and the furnace is charged with scrap an operator uses fingertip controls to direct powerful machinery that slides the huge top back into place when the current is turned on the power surging to the electrode sways the heavy cables in fact you could light a fair-sized city with the electricity used in a single electric arc first here too the melter is the master chef who controls the recipe for the special steel he's making [Music] carefully measured amounts of nickel chromium tungsten vanadium or other alloys are added to give each customer precisely the kind of special steel he needs the charging machine adds limestone and other materials to remove impurities when the furnace is ready to tap the melter goes to the pouring side he pushes the lever and the whole furnace tilts to pour the steel into the waiting ladle whether the steel flows from electric furnace bof or open hearth it moves next to the teaming area but this is only the beginning for different steels acquire still more varied qualities in the treating and shaping it to come here steel from an open hearth furnace is poured into waiting cast iron molds then the ingot molds are moved to the stripping stand [Music] here huge hooks remove the mold from the [Music] ingot the ingot is still hot but solid enough to hold its shape next stop is at the large furnaces called soaking pits where the ingots are brought to uniform high temperature for rolling [Music] when the rolling mill calls for steel the ingot is ready 2300 degrees hot top to bottom inside and out in these operations ingots generally range from four and one-half to 24 tons that's from 9 000 to 48 000 pounds [Music] ingots are rolled into a bloom or a slab [Music] blooms give the world structural steel structural steel for skyscrapers bridges and other structures blooms are also rolled into billets another common shape of semi-finished steel [Music] billets are formed into tubes and bars of many shapes and sizes from which manufacturers make drills hand tools and hardware billets to make rods rods to make wire steel wire for baskets paper clips coat hangers fences window screen and countless other things slabs from ingots can be rolled into plate plates may be used in the strong hall of an atomic powered ship storage tanks a giant crane road building equipment or heavy machinery [Music] conventional processing now goes to work on the ingot skilled men manipulate the mechanical monsters that shape and form the ingot into slabs some slabs continue on their way immediately other slabs are kept in storage until they are needed before being further rolled these slabs must be reheated to the proper rolling temperature in the reheat furnace when the slab reaches 2300 degrees out it comes headed for the scale breaker then it continues through the roughing stands the slab is squeezed flattened and edged as it passes through one set of rollers after another the slab that was once seven inches thick and 12 or 15 feet long now is a sheet of steel over a quarter of a mile long and only 1 16 of an inch thick traveling about 20 to 25 miles an hour the sheet races down the run-out table where water sprays drench the steel with a thousand gallons a minute to cool it to proper coiling temperature the steel at this stage is known as hot rolled for which there are a variety of uses however most steel is processed further it may be pickled to remove oxide it may be cold reduced annealed temper rolled galvanized or coated with tin more and more a cold rolled sheet as seen here is being shipped to customers in huge coils customers stockpile coils right in their own plants to have a supply of steel on hand when they need it steel like this but with many technical variations according to the needs of customers continues now in every direction to lend beauty and style and strength to automobiles to provide tough steel that will stretch without breaking and form the wash tub of a washing machine to make billions of cans each year to bring us beverages food and countless other products [Music] to give polish and durability to kitchen cabinets and appliances or to form the clean and colorful surfaces for the buildings of today and tomorrow [Music] no other metal perhaps no other material is as versatile as steel and yet it is not easily produced the investment of many thousands of share owners is required to build and keep modern the mills the imagination and patient continuing research of many trained minds is essential to the development of new and improved products and methods but above all steel challenges and attracts the dedication of thousands of men proud to be called steel men proud of their contribution to a world in which the progress of man is so closely associated with the progress of steel of course i was kidding that we show a lot of films about stila some of this has to do with uh getting films from oregon archive which is based in pittsburgh and they got a bunch of u.s steel films uh and then steele just shows up and lots of films that we have so that was pretty great though somebody asked me a question about uh they saw at the beginning uh title it said uh technicolor and they wanted to know the difference between technicolor and kodachrome um so here's the the kind of weird thing about technicolor is they shot it in technicolor which means that they shot it with a technicolor camera that had three negatives that were mono film and they had a prism that would split red green blue and so what you would do is you would shoot uh the raw three strip technicolor negative then they would uh process it and then use technicolor had their proprietary dies that they would use based on the three strips and you would have this vivid color and what's great about that is the fact that since it's monochrome um the negatives are monochrome that means that they don't fade uh the disadvantage of that is that if one of the three strips gets damaged or begins to shrink a little bit then you get this weird kind of offset um and there's restoration software that's designed for that and there's also people who are when they're printing from original technicolor uh negatives they're they're trying to offset that and figure out ways to compensate for that uh so that's pretty interesting now in the 16 millimeter realm there is certainly uh technicolor prints but um i have run across prints that say that they're technicolor in the titles but they have faded red uh because they were actually they were shot on technicolor but they were printed on eastman color or ektachrome uh this could have been printed to technicolor it could also have been printed to kodochrome it's unlikely that this was a shock to ectochrome um so there's there's the geek part of the av geeks part of the show today um technicolor is uh an amazing process big pain in the butt because you have to have a giant camera that has three separate uh reels of film so it's huge then you had to shield it for sound because you had three whirring machine gears uh motors kind of wearing uh at the same time um and so you had what's called a blimp that was kind of this enclosed thing that went around the camera so it wasn't so loud um and uh yeah it was expensive too it's super expensive to shoot on technicolor which is hollywood did it but then um and technicolor still kind of exists and i've seen technicolor halloweens like where they've processed it but they've really just processed like kodachrome or ectochrome or something and you know so there you go all right it's time for um inside out uh looks like it accidentally made itself halfway through so let me restart it um all right uh anyways inside out that popular 70s show that was on public television also shown in schools um there we go traveling shoes the series and related materials were developed and supported by 32 educational agencies with additional support from exxon corporation [Music] you know i've lived there all my life i would never want to leave here [Music] when i get a little bit older i'm going to help my daddy on a crab boat we're going to be partners [Music] it's really hard working on the water sometimes it's good sometimes seems like you can't catch nothing them crabs got a mind of their own if they ain't biting man you just don't make it and you're gonna lose money [Music] working on the water is not like a steady job you just don't get a paycheck every week [Music] leaving this place would be awfully hard i was born down here i've lived here all my life but a man has to make enough money to support his family [Music] even with the family working the garden we just can't make ends meet [Music] hey big man how you doing hey mama yeah let's get in the house it was hot out here really had a rough day today good night they're coming in the next oh come on let's gather round sit down hurry up daddy i want to go yeah well i got something very important to tell you your mother and me have been talking about something that's very important and i know that uh you all have been suspecting something so i thought this would be a good time to tell you about it uh we're going to move what i can't make enough money here i can't take care of the family on the money i make working on the water uh the little bit we get from the garden just won't do uh we're gonna have to move to the city i have a job already and it's a good job and i get a regular paycheck we're gonna need everybody pitching in to help your mother get everything packed so that we'd be ready to go i don't want to go i want to stay at grandpa's house stewart the whole family's going that's it do you understand we're a family and we're going to stay together as a family we're all going okay that's enough of that it's getting hot let's go to the beach okay yeah let's go come on [Music] i know it'll be hard leaving the friends and family we have down here [Music] there's so many memories around here like that old school over there that's where grandpa went to school when he was a little boy all these animals in the open spaces it's going to be the same but it won't be so bad we'll have good times up there after all we can always come back and visit the folks down here [Music] my father's getting a new job dead everything man we're gonna have ourselves a bad apartment air conditioner i won't have this hot air on me no more i'm gonna have a room to myself i think i'm gonna put it all in blue and then i'm gonna have y'all come up maybe we could party all night i know a child i bet it's gonna be parties all over the place won't be dull like this place i'm gonna meet a whole bunch of boys and i'm gonna get three of them just for y'all forget dude and we learn how to drive too and then we can get a car and go all over the place we'll be going to parties and everything hurry get all this talk y'all let's go swimming come on on [Music] day could i have your bike could i have you both you three guys don't have to worry you're not getting into my toys i'm gonna tell my papa all about it tonight i'm not going you better watch out i heard that those balls are pretty tough up there i don't need to worry i'm not going we'll see about that i'm older i'll take you out partying with me because we you never get any rips and people i'm sick of the whole thing i just want to go in a nice cool air condition and let me know and you know my dog's going to get killed i'm not going oh i wish they let me stay here with grandpa but i know they won't oh what's gonna happen to me i guess there's nothing i could do about it i just gotta go traveling 70s uh for fresca lucky light beer and tab at tab commercials nut um and then prior to that we just watched uh inside out traveling shoes uh which you see a brother and a sister reconciling the fact that they have to move and how excited the sister is and how acceptable the brother is i went through this in the fourth grade i went to three different fourth grades um so i went from suburban dayton ohio to rural north carolina to a little less rural north carolina um where i stayed middle college um but yeah it can uh be rough so um it's interesting to watch that you know the inside out series is a lot about the emotions processing emotions about different things and don't necessarily give answers to the questions that they bring up which is why i love it um thanks everybody for tuning in
