foreign adios Palma de Mallorca adios um hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks uh 16 millimeter lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and then we think about them and we talk about them and uh yeah that was uh from the Mogul Brothers Library made probably in the late 20s early 30s and distribute it on 16 millimeter um yeah interesting travelogue by Burton homes Burton homes was a uh did a lot of travel logs in early Cinema um and would originally would travel along with his films and would show them and do lectures so basically he was you know it was a glorified like this is what I did on my vacation but he did it enough that he kind of had an error of uh authenticity to him and eventually then he had his stuff distributed and he sold his footage to other entities who um sold it and so it got shown in other places uh time for some polka [Music] friendship Glory for every girl and and every boy [Music] and yes friendships [Music] friends [Music] thank you make your little hearts so happy I'm good you will write us I love the Milky Way [Music] um it just kind of stopped regrettably this is part of a collection from Craig Baldwin and he tends to only have access to Snippets uh he is a resourceful guy uh and his uh experimental film works are awesome but when it comes to having a beginning or an end um not so good so sorry about that um but that that young girl could sing Holy Cow uh this is an interesting film uh it's called visual perception and failure to learn spatial dyslexia uh and I would say I haven't actually gone through the test but I would say that I have a little bit of Dyslexia um and it has impacted me reading um it could be related to some who knows what but um my heart goes out to anybody who has any aspect of Dyslexia uh thankfully it's beginning to be more understood and um yeah so let's see how they treated this back in the late 50s early 60s [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you for a child who has disabilities in visual perception no task is easy [Music] [Applause] in particular school learning depends upon adequate visual perception yet at the kindergarten and first grade level 10 to 15 percent of all children suffer from a disability in visual perception or a delay in its development [Music] foreign [Music] visual perception does not refer to eyesight the images focused on the retina of the eye but to the brain's interpretation of the incoming visual stimuli the eye sees lines and surfaces but the brain perceives them as forming specific shapes and objects with a particular location in space a child may have perfect sight and excellent intelligence yet his perception of shapes and objects and their positions may be distorted the numeral five to begin with six seven eight good nine nine make a nine stiff a balloon and a stick right ten when soon he soon Billy saw at the wheel where's house hello said he called called [Music] visual perceptual disabilities will be reflected in a child's work because he fails so often they will also be reflected in his behavior [Music] [Music] we find out whether children who fail to learn who withdraw or clown or fight have disabilities in visual perception it is necessary to test them visual perception is a complex process this test evaluates five areas of visual perception a disturbance in any one of these may affect a child's ability to learn in school the first subtest is for eye motor coordination children like Roger who have difficulty in coordinating site with hand movement will have difficulty in learning to write letters and numbers a sort of turn in it now see if you can go from beginning to end of this one without stopping without coming back without touching the same okay Roger Now find one star in this picture here outline it with this pen and then a circle no just one star here keep just on one star nothing else if you can go right on top of the lanes in the star okay that's one all right now I give you another kind of pencil see if you can go right on top of the lines of one of the other stars the second subtest is for figure ground perception this is the ability to perceive an object as distinct from its surroundings children with disabilities in figure ground perception will have difficulty in games and sports my wife said rabbit bunny who now can we help little chick get get across the pond the river in learning to read or write children with figure grounds disability may change the order of words or lose their place because the word on which they should be focusing does not stand out from the words around it over the side they ran ran now can I get a crossed bunny the third area is constancy of visual perception this involves the ability to recognize an object no matter from what angle or distance it is viewed in the subtest for constancy the child is first shown the difference between a circle and an oval and then asked to Mark just the circles he is then shown the difference between a square and a rectangle and asked to outline just the squares together a child with a disability in perceptual constancy might fail to recognize words he has already learned if they are in another color size or style of print or in another context Randy has difficulty in recognizing on flash cards simple words he can read in his textbook or when he sees them written on the board know that one let's see what's that one very good see which of the one is it looks exactly the same as this one some are different but one of them is the same find the one that is exactly the same perception of position in space is the fourth area evaluated by the test by position in space is meant the way an object is oriented in relation to the Observer yeah find the Box on the bottom row that looks exactly like that one okay you see that that this is pointing that side right yeah it's pointing that side now you take the triangle and find another triangle which is pointing that side you take that triangle let's put it over here and let's go and find the triangle which looks just like that does it look like that Joe put it on it and let's see if it looks just like that let's go come on move over here bring it over here does it look like that Joe no let's go back and check each of these numerals and you tell me if it's written correctly is this written correctly all right now how about this all right see if you can write it again foreign look at it again is that the way a six would look to you yeah that's more this so I can't that's the best that you can do what do you think is different about this thing it's wrong I will try it once more and then we'll go on to another new rule what do you think is wrong about it backwards all right well then if it's backwards how would you fix that like this is there another way you could fix it what's up zero did that look like a six no oh Club more sex that looks more like a pig uh let's move on to seven is that right someone's right Devin is Right children with disabilities and perception of position in space reverse numbers and letters they are confused by letters of the same shape but different direction such as p and B and they frequently try to read words backwards boat said boat fan or off vote and just make a picture over here look exactly like the one over there joint exactly the same dots okay Okay so what's this picture first okay now the bottom one you see join the same dots on this sign that are joined on here make this picture look exactly like that the final subtest is for perception of spatial relationships this means the ability to perceive the positions of objects in relation to each other as well as in relation to the Observer you have to copy and make over here on this page to an exactly the same dots of the join over here and make protection on exactly the same and you are going to do the pattern I'm going to do watch me okay now let's see if you can do what I'm making can you make a pattern like that to me let's try this [Music] what else find out whatever foreign did you make the same one children with a disability in spatial relations like those with poor figure ground perception have difficulty with even the simplest everyday activities they will also be Gravely handicapped in learning to read spell and do arithmetic and I show you how it should be it should be 11 I skip here because it's fine now 2000 We Begin here [Music] you see and now 30 and here [Music] now 11 is still the one two hundred you see it goes by color you see a live match you can add by columns Roger was exactly seven years old but his performance in the different areas of the frostic test of visual perception ranged from the four-year level to the sixth year and three month level from the scaled scores a perceptual quotient was obtained Rogers PQ of 76 is well below the average of a hundred test results such as these pinpoint the specific areas of visual perceptual disability and enable precise remedial programs to be put into effect [Music] I movement should first be checked and trained if necessary [Music] training in body concept body image directionality and sensory motor skills is essential yes training in visual perception itself begins with three-dimensional objects and leads to systematic step-by-step pencil and paper training an essential preparation for academic learning such a program can be used as a preventive measure in regular preschool and primary grade classes or it can be precisely geared to test results and used remediately turn it around like this that's [Music] okay to use this finger here see no I don't know that's a six see it again training in visual perception should not be delayed if it is provided at The crucial time when children are first faced with learning to read write and do arithmetic it will be more likely to alleviate learning difficulties and to prevent the emotional disturbances that so often accompany failure before very good you see which way around it is okay now do it again with your eyes closed this time see if you can do a six with your eyes closed good look very good perfect so I'm trying to determine if that's a British film Canadian film American Film uh there are mentions of the Los Angeles Center and Churchill films which was based in Los Angeles but um you know the narrators British the some of the teachers are British but the kids are American yeah I don't know trying to figure that out all right so uh I'm trying to get this film behind me right there on the scanner to thread up so we're gonna give it a shot um yesterday I showed Zero Hour which was a Ray Bradbury short uh then at the Alamo I showed uh two short films um All Summer in a Day and ugly little boy which were also sci-fi shorts but I'm gonna go ahead and show another one or try to show you another one uh the belt let's see if this works um if it doesn't then I've got other stuff I'll show all right let's give this a shot fingers crossed foreign [Music] Georgia we should look at the nursery oh what's wrong with him I don't know well then I just want you to look at it is all or call a psychologist didn't look at it now what would a psychologist want with our Nursery the nursery is different now than it was fine all right sure sure come on let's have a look [Music] at that that's unbelievable every time I see this it amazes me it's Africa no I don't see anything wrong there lions yeah they've been eating I don't know what looks like um some animal a Zebra baby giraffe maybe are you sure it's a little late to be sure there's nothing left with clean bones now they're on their way to the water hole did you hear that scream it's green no a minute ago on our way down the hall no I'm sorry I didn't look he's coming over to pay his respects hey oh no wait look it's all over the phonics and Sonics and uh dimensional super action behind glass screens no look you uh you think of something and uh bam it's here in the wall hole I'm afraid it's too real you've got to tell Peter and Wendy not to think anymore about Africa sure you promise of course and lock the nursery for a few days until I get my nerves settled then you know how Wendy and Peter feel when I shut off that room for even a few hours gotta be locked now all right there it's locked come on you are very tense relax now you are very tense relax you must relax every muscle you're growing calm now very calm every muscle is relaxing every muscle is relaxing in even working too hard you need a rest I don't know maybe I don't have enough to do maybe I have too much time to think why don't we shut the whole house off for a few days and take a vacation I mean uh does that mean you want to fry my eggs for me and darn my socks and sweep the floor yes oh yeah Oh I thought that's why we paid so much money for this house so you wouldn't have to do anything but that's just it I feel like I don't belong here [Music] this house has become a wife and the mother and the nurse maid I can't bathe the children as quickly as the automatic scrub bass can [Music] how can I compete with the African belt and it isn't just me it's you two you've been drinking too much you take more tranquilizers every day more sleeping pills every night spending less and less time with the children you're beginning to feel unnecessary too when George's Lions can't get out of there can they hey no no of course not it is 8 P.M 8 P.M what do you want for dinner the children won't be home to eat I imagine they're across town at the plastic Carnival don't don't they bother to tell us anymore when they're not coming home you forgot the ketchup I apologize you know I think I can smell those Lions way out here where are you going foreign go away go on scram [Music] all right um the principle of this room is that you uh you send out your thoughts and whatever you're thinking appears on a screen right all right let's have um let's have Aladdin and his magic lamp come on room will you change come on I demand Aladdin you out come on room change now the room's out of order it won't respond or or what or it can't respond because the children who thought about Africa and lions and killing so much that the rooms locked in maybe or maybe Peter said it deliberately to remain that way he said it he might have got into the machinery and fixed something there's no machine honey you know how bright he is I don't understand that room myself how do you expect him to China the kids are late for supper we're full of strawberry ice cream but we'll sit and watch hey um oh you want a french fry no listen uh why don't you guys tell us about the nursery the nursery how about Africa and everything I don't understand well your mother and I just been traveling through Africa there's no Africa in the nursery We Know Better 100 memory Africa do you Wendy no Francine comes out Wendy come back when do you look and come tell us she doesn't have to tell me I've seen it so I'm sure you're mistaken nope here I'm not mistaken it's not Africa and we'll see about this come on [Applause] you heard me what's that oh it's nothing it's an old wallet well it's been chewed look at the tooth marks what's this smear all over it it's blood isn't it let's go to bed [Music] foreign yes Wendy changed it of course from a village why why what's your wallet doing in there don't know anything the room's supposed to help them work off their neuroses in a healthful way yeah yeah oh well I'm starting to wonder we've given them everything they've ever wanted oh they're insufferable submitted you're spoiled we're spoiled thank God I'm David McLean come look at Africa it's not Africa now this it is Africa broken back into the nursery sound familiar let's get them out No not tonight no not tonight I smell cat I smell cat [Music] it is seven a.m 7 A.M [Music] father [Music] yes you're not going to turn off the nurses for good are you well that depends on what when you your sister I want you to try any place any place besides Africa Sweden perhaps or or China I thought we'd feed players we wished are you are within reason I wouldn't want the nursery shut off ever Lincoln as a matter of fact we were thinking of turning the whole house off for about a month you may not have to tie my own shoes yep and brush my own teeth and give myself a bath I think it'd be kind of fun for a chick no it would be terrible you took out the picture pair last month that was because son I wanted you to learn how to paint on your own I don't want to do anything go play in Africa you don't mind then not at the moment no will you shut off the house sometime soon we're considering it I don't think you'd better consider any more father good morning Lydia good morning am I late no not at all can I get you some breakfast oh I'm happy yeah what's uh what's wrong George hi George hi how are you okay what's the problem well listen uh since you're a psychologist I thought that I'd like you to take a look at our Nursery um when you saw it a year ago did you notice anything the usual violences tendency toward a slight paranoia nothing out of the ordinary for children let's take a look all right we'll be right back I locked the nursery up yesterday the children broke back into it last night I let him stay so that they could form the patterns for you to see there it is run outside Kate don't change the metal combination leave the walls as they are come on come on get I wish I knew what they were eating you know sometimes I can almost see how long has this been going on a little over a month my advice is to have the whole room torn down you know how much it's cost and have your children brought to me regularly for treatment is that bad I'm afraid so George if you let your kids down in some way no no what I wouldn't let them take a rocket ship alone to New York what else I've taken a few machines out of the house I I threatened them with closing up the nursery if they didn't behave George you've let this room replace you and Lydia and your kids affections this room is their parents it's far more important in their lives than the real mother and father can I do turn off the house unplug the machinery do things for yourself do things with your children walk with the fly kites they'll forget about this room delicious let's get out of here I don't suppose there's any way the way what that they could become real the Lions of course I mean some law on the machinery it's just that George it's only machinery well I don't imagine this room will like being turned off no come on I'll pick you up in an hour in my helicopter I'll take you to the lake myself that'd be nice David thank you is it this yours no no it's Lydia's all right I'll be back in an hour to videos [Applause] leave the nursery on for just a few minutes and it stays off this whole house dies Here and Now let's go a voice box oh my God [Music] 2 A.M [Music] please relax [Music] all right all right one minute one minute and then off forever thank you Father [Music] I'll go get ready [Music] how quiet the house is never realized it used to hum all the time well in a few minutes we'll be on our way to real mountains and a real lake with real fish in it how did we get involved in all this I don't know Peter windy yes Peter kids it's locked it from the outside come on kids don't be ridiculous let's go George I can't George [Applause] Lydia George I'm here yours Lydia foreign Peter where are your parents Oh They'll be long sir good we have to get going Mr McLean [Music] a cup of tea [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] oh wow um so I believe when this came out uh Bradberry he wrote in 1950 uh was talking about technology and kids and you could say like well let's talk about television and impacting kids on television or radio or comic books or I mean you could say tick tock nowadays has turned our kids against us it's doing more it's parenting our kids more than we are so it's always something oh video games too of course so fascinating fascinating and was that Jason Bateman I so what's interesting is I looked on IMDb and they didn't really flesh out the plot or the uh the cast so I don't know if that was him or not um look like him in the eyes oh somebody said yep well there you go um so let's see couple things Kenneth anger passed um brilliant experimental filmmaker also royal pain in the butt to deal with I know several people who were cursed by him personally in working with him very temperamental difficult a little on the scammy side but that's kind of part of his character I think um really that's what's great about early experimental film or experimental film in general is that you have people who are real characters shysters um and so the world was made a little bit more interesting by Kenneth anger so rest in peace or whatever whatever you desire Kenneth um also uh yesterday I sent out invites to the AV Geeks after dark screening which is going to be on Saturday nine o'clock Eastern Standard Time if you have not received one please email me at Skip avgeeks.com and this is only open to people who voted during the toe tapping tournament or people who contribute via patreon and patreon is a wonderful way to support us patreon.com avgeeks you can also hit the super thanks button thank you Kevin for doing that um that money goes towards buying uh DVD cases what else um Sharpies um you know a wide variety of different things that we've used to run the this archive uh you can also go to ko-fi.com avgeek symbias coffee which we will drink um but everybody have a great rest of your Wednesday we'll be back again tomorrow one o'clock Eastern Standard time or
