based on a show that Dennis nyback did Dennis nyback was a film collector and also ran the Clinton Street Theater for a while I think he actually owned it for a while um and so anyways it's kind of a is are you ready for marriage a cornet film boing um then a Brigham Young University film are you are you the one choosing the right mate and then finally are you ready or not a first aid film in um well let's go ahead and watch these films and I will see you after enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] laughs [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] mm-hmm [Music] [Applause] [Music] hahaha [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] no no no no no no no no no no no no no no [Music] no no no no no no no good morning [Music] [Music] whoa wait a minute everybody sit down Johnny please don't play with those erasers Mary put the books back in the bookshelf please thank you David didn't I tell you to shut the door foreign we seem to be having a little problem with listening and following directions so let's play a little game let's pretend that I am a mouth and you are all ears and good morning children how are you today that's good now here's what we'll do today we're going to find out how important it is to listen and follow directions being a mouth I can give you directions to help you learn things you are all ears you can hear directions and flim properly now I am going to give you a Direction if you want to go to the zoo you must wiggle your ears [Music] please follow directions on how to cross the street if you don't you might get hurt are you listening first always stop before crossing the street stand still and look to your left [Music] to see if any cars are coming or to listen to remember now stop before you cross the street look and listen for cars and when you are very sure there are no cars coming you may go thank you [Music] Susan where's the tablecloth I asked you to bring why didn't you bring it I guess I wasn't paying attention when you said it Stan I'm sorry I wish I had listened now what will we do we'll have to sit in a pile of ants for our picnic I suppose no we won't wear the table and chairs I asked you to bring oh no I wasn't listening either when you were I remembered to bring the table quiet thank you thank you [Music] it was a good thing that boy listened or they might have been sitting in an ant bed to have their picnic [Music] now I want you to listen to The Sounds you hear in the zoo and tell me what animal you think you hear [Music] that the sound of a bear [Music] a monkey [Music] a bird [Music] or a lion a lion [Music] a giraffe [Music] a zebra foreign [Music] [Applause] or an elephant an elephant [Music] don't run Scott you will hurt yourself watch out Scotty you must learn to listen and follow directions another thing you should know about directions is that there is a right way and a wrong way to give them now this is the wrong way Ray will you try to finish this up just as quick as you can now that's not the way to give directions nobody likes to be bullied this is the right way to give directions Ray will you please finish this job just as soon as possible what if you couldn't hear directions some people can't hear sound at all for people who can't hear sound at all and for people who can hear but don't listen there are directions you can see [Music] [Music] it's a good thing to listen and follow directions it makes things much safer nicer and happier are you listening out there [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you foreign [Music] thank you very isn't it exciting about our getting married [Music] walking on a pink Cloud so I asked her last night at a graduation prom and she said yes we're going to be married in August wow married just finishing high school and you still have two years at the University that's a tough road Larry what are you going to use for money well as soon as folks we're going to pay something to put her in junior college here in town for two years so we'll have that but instead of going to college you'll get a full-time job in campus town I think she doesn't care anymore about education so with that and my part-time job will get by here soon now you two probably want to be alone oh Larry well what's the matter it's the folk state we had a terrible scene I couldn't sleep a wink they don't approve they say I'm too young they want me to finish two more years of schooling before I even get engaged oh Larry oh [ __ ] up sweetheart they can't stop me relax and act normal for your graduation next week then I can borrow Phil's card we'll go down to Greenville there's a Justice of the Peace down there really love honey but Mary I wanted a church wedding and all the parties and showers for me too and my folks that would break Mom's heart well we're the ones that are getting married not your folks I don't know Larry I read somewhere that a marriage without parents approval has two strikes on it from the start but if eloping's the only way no maybe it isn't maybe you could convince your folks that you should get married but how Larry how IE I'll bet we could get some advice from the marriage counselor over at the church his name is Hall Bill told me about him he teaches a course in marriage and family living at the college do you think he could help me with my folks it's worth a try isn't it [Music] my folks don't understand the way I feel so that's the story Mr Hall do you think you can help us get married why I'm in favor of marriage in fact I spent a good deal of my time helping people to get ready for marriage now let's see you've known each other for three months one week two days and uh 17 hours and you're 18 through and 19 Larry have either of you ever been in love before well but not like this this is the real thing yeah I had a chairman College who had the real thing with eight successive girls oh it's all right if you have it fine it's a very important factor in building a happy marriage but tell me how do you know it's real love the kind you can get married on why ever since I first met Larry I haven't wanted to date anyone else the whole three months now and besides I haven't even had one quarrel with them no quarrels why not no differences of opinion are no opinions what do you talk about on your dates oh movies and popular songs orchestras dancing and Mary's chosen profession engineering no no I don't understand so you felt that way it seems you too may have some things to talk over and settle Mike will ask yourself some questions before you get too serious about marriage what do you mean what sort of questions well questions for Cupid you might say he should ask them before he fires those arrows we call this Cupid's checkbook first do you have similar backgrounds similar basis for your ideals and standards second are you real friends comrades Pals through thick and thin and third do you both understand marriage oh not the kind in most movies or most popular songs but the real everyday kind of marriage between real people do you understand it well golly Mr Hall I don't know the answers to all those questions I just know that I'm in love with Sue is that bad no that's good and it's good when you recognize that you don't know the answers it's a good sign I don't know I think we're friends and maybe we can understand marriage but backgrounds how do they affect getting married well come over here a minute perhaps I can show you what I mean what's that I call it a marriage development board it represents the psychological distance between a husband and a wife from the time they are born until they die but what does it all mean well let's set it up for you and Sue when you are born you inherit a great many differences from your parents that's part of your background that makes sense all right no as you grow up you each develop separate and unique personalities your mental growth your emotional Outlook your standards and ideals Larry you're distinctly masculine outlook on life and through your feminine way of looking at things Your Capacity is to love and be loved these in many other ways you each acquire a background so that when you first met you were probably farther apart probably more distinct individuals than when you were born but I don't want to marry a girl like me I want to marry a man like him so even though we're close together here we don't know how far apart we are there that's right when you two met there was probably an early physical reaction a romantic attraction that pulled you together a love appeal that hits you sort of boy how did you know well it happened to me it happens to some degree to most couples who become happily married but it takes more than this Boeing for you see if you're too far apart psychologically if your backgrounds are not similar enough it can cause a great deal of argument and unhappiness until it's gone where'd it go that's what you'll be saying about your romantic love if these other things cause a breakup no sir this is forever with Larry and me fine I hope so but don't you think it's wise to take time to find out how much strain these differences might put on your romantic love but there isn't any time Larry's going away in a couple of months yes did you two ever see these figures on length of Engagement and how it relates to chances for happiness in marriage two separate studies showed the chance for happiness improves with a longer engagement period it's fair for six months better for a year or two years is that because there's a better chance to find out some of these differences and become real friends yes a chance to find out if your relationship will wear well yes but can't we settle these differences after we're married if you aren't successful before you become too deeply involved find out if the distance might turn out to be too great here's another angle that should interest you both how age when married affects the chance for happiness you can see that the chances are better after the man reaches 21 or so the same study showed that the woman must be 19 or 20 before the chances for happiness begin to be good but why what's the difference between 19 and 21 or so the difference is in you the next few years you Larry and you sue young people seem to change and mature in these years from 18 to 21 or even later so that a person you might marry at 18 or so will seem like quite a different person to you a few years later gee huh doesn't take an engineer to see that they're on the bad part of the curve of these crafts all of them yeah yeah I see our chances aren't so good now what are we going to do I thought you were going to help us get married I believe I can I think you two have a lot of what it takes to build a successful marriage and yet you wouldn't try to plan and build a house in three months would you shouldn't a marriage have better planning if you two are going to build a successful Family Team it will last for for 40 or 50 years how long do you think it should take to get ready for it all right how do we know when we've done it when the two of you are ready for marriage you're such a new feeling between the two of you United as a pair thinking as one unit acting as one unit in the building of a marriage and a new family your sense of parents shows up in the way in which you consider what's best for the pair of you over what you want individually for yourself you speak of things from my point of view instead of ours how often you say I want instead of we want I guess it wasn't my folks that made it convincing it's me I mean it's us isn't it Mary yeah we'll say and so in terms of the checklist for Cupid Larry and Sue began to examine their Readiness for marriage do we have similar backgrounds do we agree in our religious belief s for the same feelings about religion in general do we have the same ideals and standards and tastes [Music] do we enjoy the same friends do we share the same interests [Music] what about suing me are we real friends do we have a real happiness in being together talking or just doing nothing together as each of us really want to make the other one happy [Music] do we have a real interest in each other a sense of pride in each other [Music] we know each other's peculiarities do we both have a spirit of give and take can we quarrel and and come out of it with something better than before do we really understand marriage do we understand the social aspects of marriage have we an understanding about money matters and how important it is to have enough money to do more than just get by do we understand the physical aspects and the family side of marriage do we know how much work there is to a marriage and overall do we have a feeling of prepared Unity those questions were helping us to find out just how strong our relationship was and helping us to strengthen it so the next time we called on Mr Hall we realized how much he had been helping us he had been talking for some time with our parents and there seemed to be General agreement that Sue and I now had a much better idea of just how much psychological distance still separated us if you want to sue your mother and I we can make arrangements for you to begin school at State U this fall with Larry instead of at the junior college if we want to then if you two get along in school that is if you continue to reduce the psychological distance then perhaps at Christmas vacation or at Easter vacation we'll be glad to announce the engagement and then we can be married when Larry graduates in two years I mean one year and 10 months and three days yes if the engagement period gives you two the opportunity to work things out together if you both still want it I guess you might think we're engaged to be engaged and Mr Hall I we both want to thank you and say now do you think we have anything more than flying why yes I think you've made a good start towards getting ready for marriage [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] I wish I knew I Need Your Love to do [Music] I wish [Laughter] [Music] that's a good one okay that should do it hey you know I better get you back they'll think I've abducted you oh would you try me yeah I think we'd better get back come on [Music] foreign [Music] 12 years they've been married and there's still a lot of honeymoon gee that's great I hope I can have a marriage like that could I see your necking license please I have some marshmallow sticks I hated that walk bring back your appetite Doug here's another sandwich no thanks you keep it she'd have me as big around as I am tall oh you can just thank me that he's alive today you know when he first started boarding with us three years ago he was he was hungry looking stupid and then surely went to work on them and like with everything else she does she was arousing success well thank you hey kids come on over here marshmallow time [Music] for you hey how about us well here you go genius is fun thanks a lot for inviting us I'm glad you could come we uh sort of like to demonstrate the joy of family life as often as possible you sure do a good job of that Doug never stops talking about YouTube well he couldn't have a better example than Michael fire and I hereby present him with a marshmallow speech I like you thank you [Music] well you know I wonder why my folks never took us on well I don't know the way you describe them they don't sound much like picnic people to me what do you mean well honey our picnic's a pretty conventional thing your folks aren't dad that isn't fair honey it's nothing against your parents it's just that they're different different from what for one thing your folks isn't everybody oh no what do you mean your father sounds like the closest thing I've ever heard of too Queen Victoria come on how did we get on this by you're attacking my parents um excuse me I meant to attack their daughter nah oh um Queen Victoria didn't teach you much not a thing oh wonderful what wonderful thinking of Doug Esther I really think this is it you know what I think we're gonna be late for work if you don't get a move on as of last night I got it all figured out what figured out my marriage Wyatt die oh I'm sort of performing an autopsy in this marriage class I'm taking yeah I know now how good marriage can be and I want to be ready for her when the chat comes again I've been batting my brains to figure out what I did that was wrong what he did that was wrong like that drive it did that was wrong but when it comes right down to it it's this we just should never have gotten married in the first place oh it was no good it was just a lousy match of course we were kids then we didn't know what marriage was all about but now at least I'm more mature I think I'll be better able to judge well weren't you in love with Bill love sure if you mean did he turn me on wow but let me tell you something sweetheart contrary to popular opinion once the marriage not as tied making love is not your only occupation but could you have known all this beforehand all these differences sure if I've been smart for instance we went to visit his parents they didn't like me and I didn't like them felt out of place huh like a pork chop in a synagogue Genie Doug and I haven't he met each other's folks yet so far we're neither one too impressed and first another thing that bugged us I didn't like kids and he couldn't in fact we never agreed on anything important I guess the only thing we had going for us was sex and even that can get to be pretty unjustifying if nothing else is right well just don't make the same mistake the second time right and don't you make it the first time don't worry mama hey how about this for the dance tomorrow night cute the one for me forever [Music] alone [Music] I wish I knew [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you so yeah that's a beautiful dress do you like it it's nice you know it's going to take some rich man to keep you in the style of which you're becoming accustomed it's working in that dress shop the thing and put yourself on a budget look how boring you may have to someday I'll think about it tomorrow hey there's real butter in this frosting Margaret no bakeries these days use butter oh Dad there are some people who take pride in your work who like to put out a good product not in the business world you get as much as you can for the least effort okay what's the matter I'm just wondering how it would be to have a cynic for a husband no more challenging than demeria Pollyanna someone who's naive and gullible but what about children Doug don't they need to grow up feeling secure knowing the world's a safe place is that safe of course it is okay okay speaking of children I promise surely I take the kids off our hands tomorrow she's got a club meeting how about you and I taking them to the zoo sure I love the zoo [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] no oh come on Doug I'll buy the hot dogs for them look honey I told Shirley I do what she said now the kids have eaten nothing but John Dave because her mother's going to have dinner on the table in half an hour if they're full of hot dogs she won't be happy whichever a child Dad what's a visit to the zoo with our hot dog out of this what part of the ritual and what these kids need more than hot dogs is a little self-control now many people could use just a little self-control meeting me you said that you know you'll probably spoil your children rotten and why not children are entitled to a little spoiling before long they're adults and it's all over and if they're spoiled kids they'll be spoiled adults children think the whole universe has to revolve around them these days no but I'm not going to be mean to my kids but I do want to help them develop a little self-control and responsibility let's see that I don't see what all this has to do with having a hot dog at the zoo I think you're mean [Music] hi kids you have a good time yeah [Music] go on now you do get washed up did you and Shirley ever disagree on much before you got married nothing important we uh sort of took our time and got to know each other pretty thoroughly well there was the time I wanted to dye my hair and Michael about had a fit did you do it no it was a struggle but he finally convinced me I was gorgeous just the way I was you have to think a like on the essentials and then with the minor things you well you have to be able to give and take are you in Maryland having troubles Doug sort of for instance what if we had children in didn't agree on how to raise them he believes in spanking and I don't grow up neurotic don't we all you know what else sometimes I think we just look at life differently he thinks I'm gullible and well sometimes I think he's a little bit cynical now I why don't you come with me tonight where my marriage class this is exactly what we're talking about how to find out if you're a good match if you're compatible and it's informal we all just discuss things oh I don't know all that scientific stuff bores me besides I don't want to marry deranged by a computer you'd prefer one arranged by a glands look Marilyn I don't go for the cold calculating approach either but this time around I'm gonna be just a little more intelligent about it you know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and I got the pounds to prove it okay why not and hurry so far I've got a perfect attendance record for sitting right by the most eligible boy in the class this morning I found a good comment on Love and Marriage if of all words of tongue and Pen the saddest are it might have been more sad are these we daily see it is but had not to be you probably all know at least one marriage like this we counselors see them all the time people who have they have been better matched would have been spared a lot of grief and had much richer lives Story of My Life much as you try to avoid it mismatching will occur frequently the couple involved just gets Carried Away by their emotions every marriage has both positive and negative elements and the more compatible two people are the more positive their marriage will be now we've already mentioned temperament what are some other compatibilities needs for instance my mother needed you really needed to belong to every social club and and committee there was a round or thought she needed one year she was president of three women's clubs we nearly starved that year and she was always after dad to try for this or that even wanted him to run for a county office drove him nuts he couldn't have cared less about all that well another compatibility that's important is role conceptions and believe me on this one I know what I'm talking about last year I was engaged to a boy who wanted a wife to be a housekeeper a cook and a babysitter he wanted to make all the decisions and I was supposed to wait on him hand and foot before long I realized that this setup wasn't for me but would this boy be a good night for another girl well sure he'd be okay for a girl who wanted to settle for that now that's an important point someone who isn't the best match for you might be quite compatible with the next person any other compatibilities what about values like uh how do the two of you look at life look at people feeling the same about religion family size leisure time and like my folks for example they could never agree on how to spend money mom would have bought books all the time books and paintings and if he could have Dad would have had a dozen sports cars money that's a tough one gosh with all these things to worry about it's the Wonder anybody's married I know but remember needs values Etc are just the specifics we can point to in discussing compatibility there's something else that governs the way people get along a kind of the overall personality reaction you have to tiptoe around in your relationship you embarrass each other or are you comfortable enough together to air your troubles without feeling rejected are you honestly proud of each other if so you can be flexible enough to adapt and to help each other grow so how do you get answers to all these things run your date through an IBM machine not your date just your data as a matter of fact there are some things you can do to get to know your perspective mate better things we too often ignore [Music] now then are you all warmed up then let's have the first group move into place and we'll take our compositional studies foreign thank you [Music] hi Kayla have you finished your composition how do I get it it was interesting you hated it well no I didn't 15 good looking girls in black leotards how could I hate it I I'm not sure I understood it but you you hated it I knew you would well no I [Music] don't know I and it's a challenge a real thrill to dance a lot more productive way to spend your time than fishing you hate it I knew you would I don't hate it it's just boring dancing is relaxing and creative at the same time besides I want to teach it someday I thought you want to get married someday of course I do but that doesn't mean I still can't dance or teach does it I guess that depends on who you marry all right what's your wife going to do do your wife and a mother seems to me that's enough of a career women can vegetate that way Doug we have been emancipated you know look what's more important jumping around with a bunch of women in black leotards are taking care of a whole new children it's not an either or thing Doug you can do both but not well how come we've never talked about these things before this never came up I guess hey Doug is that all we have in common that's a pretty good start it's not with us it's not only where we start but where we end up some growing relationship we've got I'm talking all excited about it I will get excited if I want to um sorry oh Esther it looks awful is he mad at you oh no he doesn't get mad he just stays calm and Collective it makes me feel like an idiot in fact we're alike in practically nothing competitive wow oh Marilyn I don't know this is gonna sound pretty square but maybe it's better to find out now than later huh but Esther I don't want to break up with him I love him I think what do you mean I love him sure you melt when you're in his arms but what else one day he'll be a 70 year old man what will you two be sharing then look breaking Up's no fun that it's a picnic compared to doing it after marriage but maybe he'll change Esther or maybe I will he could decide it's not so bad for women to work a little outside the home and I could change her mind about disciplining children and things like that well people can change but I wouldn't count on it I couldn't get billed it changed so much as his table manners if you're gonna marry Doug marry him for what he is now there are some things you can help them to change if your relationship's right but there are some things Doug can't change and there are some things you can't change either [Music] foreign foreign [Music] [Music] I think maybe we hadn't better see each other for a while anyway I know we don't seem to be making it do we I like you a lot I guess we're just not terribly compatible yeah yeah I've been thinking about it I know I'm really not what you needed a husband and there are other girls I guess that are closer to what you need in a wife Maybe the thing is Maryland I know that marriage can be great if the match is right and if you work at it well that's what I want from me I want the same thing for you I just like you so much I want you to be happy I really do I know I'll always remember you Doug and all the fun that we've done together I hope we can still be good friends I'm sure I'll check back now and then who knows what might happen in the years so yeah let's not waste that music [Laughter] [Music] it is generally understood that it's best to call a doctor in case of an emergency rather than attempt first aid ourselves but what about those particular emergencies where immediate action is required Civil Life and there's no time to seek help are you ready or Not by learning to follow a few simple steps you can be ready to cope with most emergencies you may encounter foreign [Music] driving along minding your own business suddenly you spot a body beside the room are you ready or not stop the car what's the situation what should you do she's bleeding badly and they're probably broken bones she shouldn't be moved now what first check her heart to see if she's Alive by listening or feeling for a heartbeat thank you [Music] next see if she's breathing always make sure there's nothing around her nose or mouth to prevent her from getting air [Music] Now quickly check for excessive bleeding and broken bones foreign [Music] she could die from loss of blood if it's not attended to immediately but what should you do regardless of the location on the body direct pressure on a wound will stop even the most severe bleeding use the cleanest cloth available fold it into a path and place it directly over the wound apply pressure by tying it firmly in place where wounds in the neck area apply pressure with the hand only [Music] if the pad becomes blood soaked don't remove it just make up another one apply it over the old one and re-tie firmly [Music] in cases of severe bleeding you should never leave the victim always wait until help happens by after you've checked and treated for stopped breathing and excessive bleeding you've done all that's necessary to save a life now treat for shock which usually follows an accident if it's possible and safe place the victim in a prone position and cover her with a cloth or blanket the idea is to prevent her from getting cold not to make her warm these procedures are simple and worth remembering especially when it can mean the difference between saving a life or death [Music] this could be you on your way home from school [Music] thank you and this could be anyone playing a kid's game or is he what's the situation he's alive he's breathing there's no bleeding or broken bone there's nothing more to do but go for help there should be someone at home [Music] all right [Music] that looks like it is it's poison [Music] there's a phone call for help in strange surroundings even the simplest antidote can be difficult to find if this is the case the safest procedure is to dilute the poison with water or milk until Health arrives otherwise follow the recommended antidote do not induce vomiting unless the antidote requires repeat do not induce vomiting the combination of vomiting and certain types of poison can be more harmful than the poison itself before administering liquids make sure the victim is conscious otherwise he could drown from it [Music] in following a few simple steps this young lady possibly saved a life do you recall what those steps were making sure he was alive she quickly checked for breathing excessive bleeding and broken bones satisfy these were not the source of the child's condition she went for help upon discovering an open bottle of poison and unsure of the whereabouts of an antidote she did the safest thing possible she deluded the poison until Health arrived [Music] this could be you far from the crowded city alone with your bowl or girlfriend are you ready in case of an emergency you'd better be because there's no one around to call for help [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] this could be an emergency right now [Music] what's the situation what should you do first check your heart is she alive can she breathe if not check for debris in her mouth wrap something soft around your finger and thoroughly wipe out her mouth [Music] you have less than five minutes to get her breathing before the lack of oxygen causes brain damage press your thumb under her chin forcing the head back so the chin is facing up wrap her sharply on the chest to shake any obstructions loose breathing should resume if it doesn't continue by forcing the head back again pinch the nostrils completely cover her mouth with yours and force air in until the chest Rises indicating she's getting air if she isn't hit her sharply between the shoulder blades and Begin Again by cleaning them out thoroughly it only takes a tiny piece of matter to cause spasm in the throat and restrict the air Passage some under chin forcing the head back this clears the tongue from the air Passage wrap her sharply on the chest if breathing doesn't resume head back pinch the nostrils to keep air from
