so [Music] hello i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um we just watched a film that was titled uh gay sierras and some of you noticed uh this is this was home movie footage um but it was shot by a professional who shot was a professional filmmaker who did educational and promotional films and uh so there were some beautiful camera work in there uh and also some fades so they shot the footage and then they uh edited it and then sent it to a lab to do the the transitions um so very pretty uh and the whole thing with the loose tooth at the end uh was pretty interesting um i like you know home movies document stuff like this and even though this film was probably not necessarily scripted but was definitely um uh deliberate uh and formalized uh i do like that there's kind of moments of uh just kind of people hanging out because that's what we like people hanging out uh this film is about wildfires [Music] [Music] floods raging carrying irresistible sweeping down on helpless communities but what causes lie behind this annual destruction of lives and property the mountain area of any community provides one of its most precious assets worth millions to the residential sections in the hills and in the low lands beneath whole cities often lie immediately below these hillsides beautiful homes and estates directly in the path of floodwaters floods are often regarded as acts of god but why should man blame providence for his own shortcomings floods are usually the direct result of fire and fire is almost invariably caused by man's carelessness let us show you the campfire man's first step towards civilization yet uncontrolled it can easily destroy much of his later progress the fire patrol car an agency established by man to guard himself against his own carelessness the alert fire patrolman has spotted a violation of the fire regulations educating the public is one of his major duties each car is a fire department in miniature equipped to control minor fires a campfire should never be left untended even for a short time and it should always be completely extinguished before leaving bury all embers using dirt that is free from combustible material pour on plenty of water and soak the ground well around the edges few forest fires start without human aid most of them are caused by agents careless smokers alone destroy millions of dollars worth of forests and other property each year [Music] fuel gas is rare in these areas so ash disposal presents another problem very often ashes that are supposedly cold retain smoldering embers that need only a slight breeze to fan them into menacing flames faulty incinerators cause many fires and spark arrestors rusted away are useless open rubbish fires are always dangerous even in the wet sea and should never be left unguarded permits must be secured for all open fires and in most places there are specified hours for burning hours when the humidity is the greatest a burning cigarette heedlessly discarded could be the cause of untold damage the thoughtless smoker drives away the cigarette still smoldering another motorist his mind intent on other matters he carelessly tosses aside a lighted match and thus sows the seed of death and destruction the seed sprouts then blossoms into the deadly flower of conflagration but vigilant eyes soon spot the result of his carelessness look out stationed at strategic points keep constant watch over our mountains and forests science steps in with map and fire finder to establish quickly the direction of the fire while the lookout knows the direction he can only estimate the distance he calls the central alarm bureau and gives his reading this bureau acts as a clearing station to coordinate and direct equipment properly added seconds now may save hours later a string establishes the direction on the map a second lookout discovers the fire by using his finder he determines the direction of the fire from this point he phones in his reading two strings a cross bearing the exact spot of the fire hauling the nearest patrol station all information about the fire its location extended equipment necessary is transmitted to the mountain patrol station with cool and hurried efficiency the veteran firefighter checks and double checks his instructions but now is the time for speed [Music] [Music] uh [Applause] [Music] dry brush for humidity ideal conditions for the rapidly spreading fire extra men are called from other stations an emergency water tank a pitiful thousand gallons to oppose this blazing holocaust with such tanks few and far between water plenty of it is the only really effective weapon against fire civilians are recruited to aid the firefighters but manpower alone is not enough one modern fire engine can replace many men but may be helpless without water strong winds add to the difficulties flying ember start new fires [Music] [Applause] despite all efforts the wind-driven planes get far beyond control valuable property is threatened more help is badly needed [Music] the heavy equipment rolls standing helpless as the all-consuming flames sweep on toward their homes the fire front a living surging wave of destruction merciless relentless leaping swirling down the mountainside cherished possessions doomed for lack of transportation trained buildings and wooden shingle roofs other refugees innocent victims fleeing in dumb terror from the enemy which they recognize but do not understand [Music] a few months ago someone's home now a blazing skeleton even the firefighters must retreat from the advancing inferno as a last resort backfire is attempted the bulldozer helps clear away during the work of menendez backfiring putting fire with fire even by experienced men is always dangerous but with insufficient trails and motorways with fire breaks neglected and overgrown and above all with the water supply limited backfiring is often necessary on a sector the last flames are knocked down by our most potent weapon water the fire is nearly out except for a few scattered remnants but a dense pall of smoke still curtains the face of the sun [Music] and then in the wake of the fire desolate ash covered slopes the graveyard of dead trees where once there was green beauty flowers and charming but this is not the end of the destruction here is a region right huge floods and soil erosion the watershed gone rainfall runoff of a brush covered area is normally only twenty percent but can be eighty percent in areas denuded by fire fire then is the prime cause of floods by reasonable care we can prevent fires and thus avoid floods metal receptacles should be provided for disposal of ashes be sure the lid is replaced and fits snugly [Music] incinerators should be of the approved type and in good repair all cigarettes and burning tobacco should be extinguished and placed in metal receivers put it out one match can summon the four horsemen of destruction fire the red enemy drought the aftermath flood the destroyer and death the reaper um yeah i'm gonna show that film about wildfires before the wildfires really start taking off this summer seems to be something that we're dealing with now um which is unfortunate uh so it's pretty great i like that over dramatic music and the again the yelling the event um let's let's calm it down a little bit let's uh let's relax a little bit and uh let's learn about english children [Music] do here in england in summer you're likely to find boys playing marbles boys like tommy watkins and his friends they're in our schoolyard and it's play time our girls have their own games of course here's tommy's sister joan and her friends it seems a shame to be leaving the outdoors this fine summer afternoon but inside the school it's not bad either we have very pleasant school buildings in our city many of our boys and girls like to draw and that's what tommy's class is doing today tommy's pretty good today he's drawing a big steam ship like those he sees when he goes to the seaside it isn't long till school is out and here is tommy watching his brother frank playing in a game of cricket it's frank's turn to bat he takes his place at the wicket waiting for the ball the bowler ball's a fast one but frank makes a hit here he goes that's one run for his team and that's another and now frank's going to bat again here's another fast one but good it sir and he's off again the fielder fumbles but but he throws the ball back and the umpire signals frank out too bad thanks tommy but frank has put up a good show not far away at the grocers sister joan and her mother are shopping the apples are quite nice today mrs watkins will have some of them and that'll cost mrs watkins one shilling and seven pence there are 12 pennies in a shilling you know and joan gives the grocer one shilling one sixpence and one penny now the shopping done joan and her mother are off for home the boys are on their way to meet their father they're walking along the old city wall built long ago to protect the city from enemies beyond they can see the railway yards and behind them stretch the rooftops of our city it's called york an old city in the north of england across the oldest part of the city here below you can see the towers of york minster our cathedral now the boys go down to the station and here comes father mr watkins is an engine driver this afternoon he brought a train in from scotland now here on this pleasant street is where the watkins family lives joan is cutting flowers for the table she loves to choose and arrange the flowers mr watkins always has many flower beds in his garden it's one we like to look at as we walk along the street in the kitchen mrs watkins is buttering thin slices of bread for tea she has the meal almost ready now at the stove she makes the tea from the kettle she pours boiling water over the tea leaves in the pot and then it's ready for the table in the dining room mrs watkins has the table already laid is everything here yes there's cold meat and tomatoes bread and butter jam and cake it's six o'clock time for tea franca is in to switch on the wireless but tommy's eyes are all for the good things they're having to eat in the series talking sports sports report was edited by angus mackay and was introduced by raymond glendenny this is the bbc light program next we present ted heath and his music [Music] father says he's on holiday next week and are they going to the seaside yes mother replies grandmother's expecting us [Music] oh can i take spot with me too asks tommy of course says joan who would feed him here spot is in the back garden waiting patiently for his tea but he doesn't have long to wait and it doesn't take long for father to finish tea he likes to spend the long warm summer evenings working in the garden the holiday has come at last it's a rather gray day as all it is too often are here in england but our friends are at the station early looking forward eagerly to their day at the seaside with tommy and spot in the lead they hurry past the ticket collector and just in time here's their train the guard opens the carriage door tommy hurries up the steps and down the corridor to find an empty compartment this compartment will do nicely frank and tommy back seats nearest the window [Music] there's a lot to see as they go along soon they're racing through our pleasant yorkshire countryside passing houses and farms fields and hedges [Music] now here's the harbor at the seaside and the boys lose no time getting down to see the fishing boats they've had many happy holiday visits here before and most of the boats seem like old friends every day in good weather our fishermen sail these boats out to sea for fish just now all the boats are resting here in the harbour the fishermen are old friends today they're mending the big nets that they use to catch the fish perhaps later the boys will get these hardy men to tell exciting stories about their adventures on the sea now the watkins family goes up through the narrow streets of the town to the winding steps that lead right up to the top of the cliffs above the harbour [Applause] this is the way to grandmother's cottage [Music] so [Music] and here is grandmother's cottage at last it's a snug place appear above the town joan and tommy can hardly wait to see their grandmother and here she is glad to see them too grandfather is in the doorway to give one and all a warm welcome the trip is over and now they settle down around the cheerful fire in grandmother's pleasant living room for a rest and a cozy chat it's really going to be a fine [Music] holiday so pastoral so chill there no crazy uh forest fires maybe an occasional uh bog fire but um yeah so i yeah very idyllic brings the blood pressure down not that bombastic last film uh this one is longer but i've really wanted to show it because the color is so good and honestly it has my name in it the main character is named skippy now my my name is actually skipper um i think only my sister calls me skippy and um it drives me nuts i won't let anybody else get away with it uh it is skip or skipper or john that is my real name but only cops and doctors call me john um in the irs uh yeah so this is skippy in the three r's and it kind of follows like skippy's first day at school what's school going to be like and like i said it's in beautiful kodachrome so here's skippy in the three r's when you're the parent day of school you suddenly find yourself hoping very hard hoping that he has a good teacher but the classrooms open warm you wish you could go with him as you did yesterday but you do want him to grow and you encourage his independence [Music] [Music] [Applause] well here it is school and here you are skippy gordon first [Music] grader [Music] yesterday when mother came with you to sign up miss temple said you could feed the fish [Music] careful not too much she said you could and she remembered then she asked you to find seats around the table the first day of school the first day of a planned routine which will envelop you for half your waking hours and which will continue for the next 10 15 or even 20 years of your life what time and thought and effort we have put into our public schools all this that you skippy gordon shall learn reading writing arithmetic and many other important things learn them yes but even more important learn to use them naturally and easily throughout your whole life miss temple is a good teacher professional competent skippy and the others are going to learn their three r's some will learn sooner than others but they will all learn for miss temple has a plan miss temple knows that skippy will learn best those things he himself wants and needs to learn good morning boys and girls well here we all are and we're going to have lots of fun finding out things together i suppose we start by finding out each other's names let's start at this table here i want you each to stand up so we can see who you are and tell me your name now i'll write it up here on the board now who will be first my name is gail gail my name is skippy skippy skippy watched miss temple right that was his own name she was writing up there of course he was skippy gordon and that was his name it would be stretching a point to say that skippy can read his name but he knows that those letters are his name one down from the top in the third row right where miss temple wrote it later that day miss temple read them a story miss temple knew that by listening to and liking stories the children would begin to understand the many interesting things to be found in books and would want to read books for themselves and all the time this temple read his name skippy go there on the board where miss temple had written it when this temple finished reading the story they talked about it how many fish did the little fisherman catch how many fish already miss temple has made a beginning on the three r's reading the story writing a simple lettering and arithmetic how many [Music] well skippy what did you learn in school today that's a big question skippy did find out some things but he hasn't labeled them today i learned what's the matter don't you like school well it won't be so bad once you get used to it not like school won't be so bad is school supposed to be something he's not to like during the first week skippy and the others learned that clay paste scissors and crayons were more than play things clay can tell a story as well as words joan brought some snails for the aquarium to help keep it clean [Music] they learned a new game to play at recess [Music] they took turns and found that by taking turns everybody had a chance they listened to music tried out sounds and rhythms [Music] [Music] so they painted pictures and skippy made a picture of a house his house [Music] yes the children learned many things and miss temple was learning too learning which children were ready eager for the next steps which children were puzzled needing patience and understanding to help them along trying [Music] what a nice picture we can make an s or skippy [Music] yes but his whole name skippy was up there on the chart of course it was his picture and should have his name on it [Music] [Applause] s k [Music] i [Music] [Applause] [Music] s k i p p y there skippy [Music] this temple would be the last to say that skippy has learned to write but he has made a beginning and more important he has done it because he skippy gordon wanted and needed to do it [Music] me [Music] some things you learned quick and hard the boys were right it is a baby strike [Music] dad how much does a bike cost well you've got a good tricycle what's the matter with that i need a real bike with two foilers i don't want a baby strike well we're going up awfully fast aren't we can i can i have a bite a real one we'll see maybe when you're a little older a real bike costs a lot of money he's silly you're skipping you're still thinking about what you're going to draw maybe we'd like to draw some of the things that we made yesterday miss temple knows skippy well enough by now to see that something is bothering him she does not insist that he get to work or pay attention for she knows that his attention is on something that is bigger more immediate importance to him she'll keep an eye on him and help when the opportunity offers things have been going well for this year's first grade the most responsive group she's ever had of course every group seems to be the best once you begin to know them as individuals they continually surprise you with their alertness their eagerness to learn with the understanding they brought with them to the school yes they're coming along not all at the same speed and some are better at one thing than another but things are proceeding proceeding according to plan part of miss temple's plan is to know each child better to know what each needs and how best to help him she knows that joan is quick to grasp a new idea but loses interest quickly too [Music] sydney seems to understand how things fit together writing and telling stories will permit him to explain the things he knows eileen waits to be told what to do she's just beginning now to do the things she herself would like frederick needs experience in just being with other children and doing things together [Music] linda was well along in reading and writing when she entered the class and she takes pride perhaps too much in being best [Music] to help skippy find a reason of his own for learning is a part of this temple's plan [Music] after several periods of planning and discussion the group has decided on a trip downtown this will give them a common experience one they can share the stores were full of exciting things and skippy saw a bike a real one a two-wheeler [Music] all right now another story hardware that's right hardware now what do we buy in hardware stores yes bicycles a reason for learning skippy has given miss temple a clue reading writing arithmetic spelling can be dull things indeed if skippy has to put aside his desire for a bike in order to learn them but if these things can become a way of knowing more about a bike well learning becomes something skippy wants to do by the trip to the stores miss temple has led the group into a common experience each child knows firsthand what the others are talking about and in talking this way a child learns to express himself clearly [Applause] perhaps they could make stores right here in school who would like that if they divide into groups they could make a whole street of stores let's see who would like to be in the hardware store there's lots to think about and decide and perhaps they should decide on a certain time each day for work on the stores yes there are many things to be learned from the stores and the bicycle is a part of it all now [Music] carolyn what did we say here where did we go we went to the store that's fine right we solve people by things that's right gail we can buy thanks too good marry we buy things with money reading and writing go naturally together ways of finding out and then telling about things they do and see and think and feel these simple words have real meaning based on the child's own experience and as he writes the words he begins to learn the shape and form of his letters this natural easy approach to the three r's is all a part of miss temple's plan snack time offers practice in simple arithmetic [Music] blocks a way of learning and working together and as the days pass the stores begin to grow and take shape it's satisfying to build things for yourself and you do have to get the stores built first if your meanings that lie behind the words is the basis for much of skippy's future learning this temple knows that some children learn to read more quickly than others she gives the quick readers plenty of material who reads more slowly pictures develop an interest a desire to know what the words say some children can paint a story better than they can tell it sharing a common experience enables the children to make a story of their own and as for reading from real books they are available and ready but there should be no hurry for to read well a child must be ready must know a tremendous lot of things things which he brings to the printed page to give the words meaning some of the children have read several books among these simple stories are the planned pre-primers which build vocabulary of simple but necessary words drawing painting modeling building are all ways of communicating and working with these materials helps children become ready for the meanings which we attach to the symbols we call the written word [Music] eyes muscular control of the crayon and understanding must all be ready for the complicated task of writing [Music] [Applause] see my bike skippy gordon is not the first six-year-old to want a bicycle miss temple remembers other boys and ways a professionally alert teacher can use the child's own reasons for learning just what is a bicycle anyway a bicycle is travel it is history it is economics its geography a bicycle can be anything and everything and for skippy gordon it can be a reason for learning but is a bicycle something which skippy can actually hope to achieve will his parents want him to have one see my bike well that's a fine picture but bicycles cost money you know i think skippy's getting big enough to need a regular allowance well i i guess anybody can make a picture like this is old enough to have an allowance would you save it to buy a bicycle oh boy can i well how long will it take to save enough money it'll take quite a while daddy now talk it over hello now it's time for you to go to bed what a kid the holidays march across the calendar [Music] by spring skippy and the others have learned many things [Music] some have learned more quickly than others but they've all learned skippy has begun to read more important he does read he has discovered that books tell him many interesting things he once told has begun to write and he does write he has found out that writing is a way of telling things to other people and he has learned some arithmetic not separately as a special subject where numbers are as natural as words a way of telling and knowing things how much is a buy four seven five oh i'll take it four seven 5 0 all this is the beginning of [Music] arithmetic how much is 4750 it's quite a lot more than four times as much as you've got here but you've done fine to say this much so soon besides how do you know you can ride a real bike [Music] hey how much got there one twelve dollars smoking okay i'll sell it to you for twelve dollars and 50 cents let's place my dad [Music] first have thought the little guy would stick to his saving find the bike he wanted make the deal himself well it just goes to show goes to show what that another boy has a bike [Music] perhaps it shows that miss temple's plan really does work that skippy's interest in the bike could be used to help him learn reading writing arithmetic yes and much more that modern teachers understand this way of teaching gets better results than memorization meaningless drill and stern discipline and best of all miss temple's plan is no secret other teachers know this way of teaching and as skippy grows and learns through the grades they will be there waiting to help and guide him as he meets new problems [Music] yes gibby you're really on your way [Music] we wish we could go with you skippy just once again [Music] [Music] those tiny nips
