[Music] your name is James Bryce and you're in a hurry you didn't really have to stop for that sign there wasn't a policeman in sight and no cars coming the other way but you did stop almost mechanically without thinking I [Music] it began a long time ago James Bryce when you look like this things happen to you then a whole series of things that told you the same story little incidents like this one Jimmy look who's come to fly with you hi well aren't you glad to see Henry get up and say hello Henry go play with Jimmy while mommy's gone they'll be ok Helen well thanks a lot Jean stop that what's the matter with you that's very naughty Jimmy it's not your fire engine it's Henry I want it it's not yours you can't have it unless Henry gives it to you making give it to Li no it belongs to Henry you'll go play with your truck that belongs to you don't why well don't play with anything then but behave yourself I'm ashamed of you [Music] you're Jimmy Bryce and you're angry you wanted something and somebody said no just because it belonged to someone else and so now you're being scolded too bad if only you weren't a human being if you were a monkey for example this problem would never come up if you wanted something you take it and may the best monkey win no mother monkey around to say naughty or you know better or I'm surprised at you or if you'd been born a social insect like a bee there'd be no problem either the social behavior of a bee is largely fixed by heredity and instinct no moral problems no trouble no rebels no criminals no non conformists in a beehive [Music] but back here in human society there are problems social behavior has to be learned usually the hard way the moral rules that govern human society are transmitted to the young through speech and writing [Music] animals society when it exists is founded on instinct physical differences and imitation these play a part in developing human society - but words and other symbolic means that the communication are more important and parents are not the only teachers of moral norms the group to which a human being belongs from his very earliest years is also responsible for some of his social education you're Jimmy Bryce and you're five years old now like it or not you've become a part of a social group today James Bryce doesn't even remember an incident like this one and it was one of many it was just one of those days those bad days life in the kindergarten was pretty doe finger-painting seemed like stuff how about a little action you're feeling pretty strong this morning anybody wanna fight there that ought to start something same old story grown-ups always spoil the fun all the old words to be a good boy ashamed of you how would you like it if somebody did that to you but Jenny's still looking for trouble and if at first you don't succeed well [Music] words haven't worked very well on Jimmy and so now the teacher tries enforcing moral norms punishment by separating in from the group Jimmy is pretending that he doesn't care but he's looking to the group for their reaction most of all he wants attention but he's not getting it now the other children have become suddenly indifferent and Jimmy is disappointed at recess time Jimmy's formal punishment was ended but then the children took over they didn't like his bullying behavior and they led him north they applied one form of social sanction against him exclusion exclusion or withdrawal is an informal kind of punishment used especially by children and adolescents but fear of it continues to exercise a restraint throughout adult life another kind of sanction is forced and Jimmy has gotten so far out of hand now that the teacher applied it she tells him that the other children don't like him right now but they will if only he'll behave a little better [Music] but by the time mrs. Brice came to get Jimmy after school that afternoon some of his cockiness had returned as a result he is about to have another sanction applied to him by his group ridicule which in this case takes the form of mimicking his strut in some situation ridicule is highly effective like withdrawal or exclusion it is a sanction ordinarily applied by children and adolescents but the threat of it continues to operate in adult behavior the fear of both exclusion and ridicule learned in childhood remains a powerful motivation for adhering to moral norms in later life fortunately the learning of moral norms is not always an unpleasant experience as Jimmy learned at recess a few days later [Music] Jenny didn't know it at the time but he was beginning to learn something essential to the whole basis of order in human society a member of society must cooperate in order to participate give in order to get Jimmy didn't learn all the rules from this one experience many incidents of the same kind were needed for his social education for example not long afterward there was that business about the tricycle sure I just want you to remember one thing to me I don't want you ever to cross a street not any street understand it's dangerous because of the automobile so you mind what daddy says but a few days later temptation confronted Jenny one afternoon he and his friend Betty were racing each other on their tricycle the forbidden territory across the street suddenly seemed very inviting over there a whole world of excitement lay waiting [Music] the call of adventure proved stronger than the rules laid down by Jimmy's father [Music] but Jenny's father came home from work early that afternoon and the culprit was caught red-handed Bettie fields highly virtuous says she sees mr. Brice reprimanding Jimmy for a misdeed that her own conscience had not let her commit and so once again Forrest is applied to Jimmy and he's brought home once again he listens while his father explains the danger of crossing the street the next day Jimmy received his punishment he was not allowed to use his tricycle and play with the other children Jenny is learning that if he breaks the rules he gets punished and punishment is an important factor in moral education in childhood however in adult life the educational aspect of punishment is relatively unimportant its main purpose is not to reform the criminal its real value is to reaffirm the moral standard for everyone else [Music] when Jenny's punishment was over and he was allowed to ride his tricycle again temptation presented itself once more [Music] again the life of forbidden joy calls to him and he would probably get away with it this time not a grown up in sight why not why not because Jimmy has begun to grow a conscience and it is beginning to take over in making decisions between right and wrong it will continue to operate often unconsciously throughout his life you're James Brice now not Jimmy aged five and most of the time you stay within the moral norms of your society your conscience is no longer just a barrier now it's a part of yourself expression relating itself to the various roles you play in your society the roles of husband and father demand that you provide for your family the role of businessman demands that you get to work on time and the roles of friend and neighbor require you to be courteous even when you're in a hurry you're James Bryce a social being at long last because your parents teachers and group did a good job of socialization without this socialization and without the sanctions used to achieve it there would be no basis for moral order in human society [Music] hello everybody hey I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a/v geeks lunchtime streaming show event I don't know what you want to call it anyways I collect old educational films and show them to folks like you I've been doing this for more than 25 years collecting old stuff old films old sixteen and I collect them mostly to show and because they all at first are funny but then there's kind of interesting little cultural nuggets or great lines like this this last film with Jimmy and the beginning of conscience what was I have to get it right it's it's a great line the life of forbidden joy calls to him so poetic and so I don't know I you know it adult motivations that's you know that's a lot big that should be Las Vegas is slogan the life or forbidden joy calls to ya calls to you alright anyways we've been doing this for I think this is on our tenth week and I appreciate you guys tuning in and this next film is a it's a compilation reel of films that were advertisements that were either shown on television or were actually meant to be shown in a theater and so I got this from someone in Memphis who got a collection of these films that were meant to be shown in theaters there were ads that were shot in that word on 16 millimeter and this was like a demo reel that the salesmen for these ads would like take to local dealerships and say hey this is what we're thinking you know we could have you you could feature the new car and then we could have a slide at the end or we could have a you know a thing at the end that mentions or even shoot like what it looks like at your dealership so this is called chevy demo reel [Music] but one way to pack a load like this boys and that's in a 67 Chevy van roomy easy load chevy vans they're great for a normal-sized load but you got an extra long but one thing to do and that's stretcher exactly what symbol a bit 467 made the new longer commercial with the volcano was awesome oh really Wow 1967 that was the year man year after I was born but there were some awesome commercials thick I have some others from those batches to see if there is good I don't think they are although there are some weird Opel cadet ones that I have well we're having fun but not nearly as much fun as these girls who are playing volleyball this is fun playing volleyball any girl can develop the fundamental skills which will enable her to enjoy this sport you too can have fun if you learn to play competition and enjoyment of vigorous movements jumping reaching twisting and body control an official team has six players three forwards centre forward and left and right forward three backs centre back and left and right back this team is in position to receive a serve the players are alert and ready here the team is about to serve the ball the players are watching the server since volleyball is primarily a pad one of the fundamental skills to be mastered is that of volleying or deflecting the ball with the hands to a teammate or across the net to an opponent the use of two hands is advisable since it gives greater control and accuracy in handling the ball there is a low volley and a high volley when a ball is received below the chest a low or underhand volley is used in passing this player handles the low volley with ease she is always in the position of readiness note her balance and I hand coordination the whole body takes part in the act as she jumps upward giving force and direction to the past these drills are fun and give practice in analyzing and developing the coordination necessary in using the underhand pass in the game the girls get underneath the ball by stepping into the pass changing the weight from the rear to the front foot eyes are kept on the ball the hands are in front of the body palms up fingers extended forward and held fairly flat under the ball the contact is made with the fleshy part of the fingers not the palm this will avoid fouling by lifting or throwing the ball rather than batting it as the ball reaches the hands the entire body participates test yourself by counting the number of consecutive taps you can make in 30 seconds in the high volley the position of readiness is important to the hands reach the ball above the head I jump up and forward is made and the ball is hit with a fleshy part of the fingers hands and fingers snapped forward to give extra force and control to the past practice in this skill drill against a wall and a line 7 and 1/2 feet from the ground will develop strength and eye hand coordination the player stands three feet from the wall the serve is the method used to put the ball in play and teams must rotate the service whenever a team is awarded the ball each player on that side rotates one position in a clockwise direction the right forward moves back to the serving area for the serve the right back moves to the center back position the center back to left back left back to left forward left forward to Center forward and Center forward to right forward this server continues to serve until her team loses the ball in the underhand serve the ball is held in the left hand waist high in front and slightly to the right the right arm swings back and then forward the heel of the hand batting the ball in an upward motion the weight shifts forward knees straighten and the arm follows through in an upward and forward in learning this basic serve beginners will increase their control and accuracy in placement by practicing correct techniques beginning near the net and working back to the serving area note the weight is always transferred to the front foot as the hand hits the ball thus giving needed power for distance the ball gets its direction from the angle at which the hand strikes the ball and the follow-through the ball may be hit off the left hand or from a slight toss the to end girls are hitting the ball from the hand and the middle one is using a little toss the overhand serve requires more power skill and practice to learn accurate placement but it can be mastered the ball is tossed into the air above the head and batted forward with an overarm swing similar to the tennis serve the stance is one foot slightly forward the ball is tossed directly overhead high enough to be able to strike it just above the head a spike is a jump in the air to reach the ball before it falls below the top of the net and a drive into the opponent's court the player times her jump and at her height the body twists toward the net and the ball is hit before it reaches the top of the net on her side she drives it into the opponent's court being careful not to touch the net these girls are tossing the ball to learn to time their jump spring in the jump is important to gain height here the girls are working in threes one sets up the ball for the second to spike while a third one retrieves the ball the setup for the Spiker must be close to the net and three to six feet above it the smash may be made with either hand striking the ball on the top leg muscle strength and accurate timing or essential for a good spike the defense against the spike is called a block the opponent jumps high extending both hands in an attempt to block to pass correct timing is important eyes watch the ball closely a ball maybe played off the net to do this a player must be close to the net and under the ball hitting it up high enough for a teammate to play this is it in drill form the knees straighten as the ball is hit giving force to the pass the arms follow directing the ball upward over the head the player behind receives the pass and sends it across the net if you watch closely you will see how one player recovers the ball from the net to gain possession of the ball for her team perhaps the most important principle of team play which must be learned early is every player must know the definite area she must cover and if she moves out to back up a teammate she must return immediately to her own section of the court the forward stay close to the net the center back has the largest space to guard the left and right back worked together they must watch for balls falling between them if the ball falls between two players the girl who can take it on her right should play it the backs play defensive by taking the speed out of the ball and converting it into a playable pass to a teammate the forwards are the attackers they transform the defensive pass into an effective shot over the net either by an accurate placement pass or a spiked team strategy consists of varying plays the three pass play back to forward four set up to net player to pass or spike may be interchanged with a two pass play and is good game strategy another good play is to return the ball without relaying it a sudden shifting of the ball in play may find the opponent off guard warm-up activities such as these help to increase muscle strength balance agility and general coordination a good player learns to shift her weight quickly with the play of the ball establishing a rhythm as here adds fun to the learning of an important skill good spring in jumping starts from the ankles these exercises will help develop ease and height in jumping and skill in reaching for high passes and the spiked practice and these will increase your endurance two tests can be fun and a challenge to improve ones record since the serve is a point getter skill and placing the ball where you want it to gold is important the court is divided into nine areas and scoring is one to six points the back and side areas score higher than the center and net in this test the BAC sets up a high pass to a centre-forward who jumps making a turn in the air and hits the ball across the net ten trials are given here the player returns the ball over the net attempting to place it in predetermined areas as you have seen volleyball is a game of fast action it offers excitement team spirit and game strategy fun from this game will increase with improvement in skills learn to play good volleyball and have fun [Music] you have fun so that was a one of the reasons I like collecting 16-millimeter is that people would often use the home movie equipment to shoot footage and then they would edit it into something that they distributed professionally and so I don't know if you noticed I'm sure I solved one comment the focus would go in and out and so some of the field footage was shot with the wrong lens and was out of focus then you know they've jumped to the charts or the the graphics and those would be sharp focus so that's something there's lots of amateur filmmakers that kind of transition into doing some sort of things that they would distribute and they would sell in educational film journals so I very much enjoy those so we've shown other ones in this series this is the inertia of motion excuse me enjoy he's going to break a pencil with a dollar bill would you like to do that trick then keep watching hello young neighbors welcome to junior science you know that when a car starts suddenly you are thrown back against the seat and you know that happens because of the inertia of rest because an object at rest tries to remain at rest that explains why you fall backward when a car starts suddenly your body has inertia and tries to remain where it is while the car moves out from under it but it doesn't explain why when a car stops suddenly you fall forward that happens because of another aspect of inertia what is it well today we're going to find out you know that when you are rollerskating you sometimes grab at something in order to stop but your body is moving and tries to keep on moving if you try to stop by grabbing someone's hand you may pull him along with you when you're playing baseball you very often overrun your base because you can't stop yourself well just as an object at rest tries to remain at rest so an object in motion class to remain in motion you see inertia is not just resistance to starting it is also a resistance to stopping an object resists any attempt to start it if it is at rest or to stop it if it is in motion and this resistance in either case is called inertia inertia of motion is shown by a moving object that tends to keep on moving even when there's something in the way to stop it to demonstrate this my friend here who isn't really very strong is going to do a sensational strongman act he's going to drive a nail through a piece of wood using only his hands first he prepares for action and also shows that there's no trick involved nothing up his sleeve and nothing up his sleeve now he places the piece of wood on two other blocks to support it then he puts a folded hexif over the head of the nail to protect his hand he holds the nail head firmly against the joint between the first and second fingers of one hand then he clenches the rest of that hand with his other hand and now watch carefully he raises both hands over his head then brings him down quick the inertia of motion of his Swift moving hands forced the nail right through the board and now here's a trick to show to your friends and it depends on the fact that a thing in motion tends to remain in motion you're going to break a pencil with a dollar bill but this one is really a trick because there's a secret to it I'll tell you what the secret is after you've seen the trick give someone a pencil and tell him to hold it tightly by it since now fooled a dollar bill in half the long way and you break the pencil with a food and bill now I told you there was a secret to this trick it's a secret that involves the inertia of motion and this is what it is when you raise your arm slip your forefinger into the folded bill so that you don't really hit the pencil with the bill you hit it with your forefinger now if you hit the pencil slowly your finger doesn't have very much inertia of motion but if you bring your finger down quickly now the inertia of motion isn't use just for stunts here's an everyday use for it suppose you're digging in a garden and some sticky mud gets on your trowel you can get it off easily if you know about the inertia of motion just knock a towel against something the trowel motion is stopped but the mud keeps on going because it has inertia if the head of a hammer comes loose you can tighten it easily just by pounding the end of the handle on a bench let's loosen the head again so you can see how it happens this time in slow motion now watch the head tighten itself here's a useful way you can apply your knowledge of inertia of motion have you ever wanted to break a string and couldn't do it because you had no knife or scissors well here's a way to break a string with nothing but your hands just pull one end of the string up behind your hand then pass it over the front of your hand now loop the loose end of the string under the other one like this wrap the loose end around your fingers to hold the loop tight now watch what happens to the string when you pull quickly because the inertia of motion of your fast-moving hands is too much for the strength of the string the string breaks what's it again in slow motion so we know that because of inertia everything tries to stay as is whether in motion or at rest I think in motion tries to remain in motion I think at rest tries to remain at rest now knowing that you should be able to predict what happens here suppose you are about to carry a plate of soup if you start forward suddenly will the soup spill toward you or away from you do you have your answer well let's try it and see it spills toward you now which way will it spill if you stop suddenly watch it spills away from you where does this happen well when you start forward the soup spills toward you because the soup has inertia of rest and tries to stay where it is while the plate pulls out from under it when you stop suddenly the soup spills away from you because it has the inertia of motion and tries to keep moving even though the plate has stopped when you are riding in a car and the driver stops suddenly you goes forward because your body has inertia of motion and tries to keep moving even though the car is stopped if you want to see how this happens try this wind up a toy truck and stand a little toy man in the back start the truck slowly so the little man won't fall let him gather speed then buckets back the man topples forward because of his inertia of motion now here's another interesting fact about inertia the amount of inertia a thing has depends upon its weight the heavier it is the more inertia it has and here's a toy you can make that will show this to you it's an inertia car and here's how you make it just put a ball of modeling clay in the bottom of a toy car put a stick in the clay and attach another stick to it loosely with a nail like this put a ball of clay on each end of this stick but make one ball much bigger than the other now when you start the car the heavier weight which has more inertia stays back farther when you stop the car the heavier wave comes forward more the heavier an object is the more inertia it has and now you know about inertia and have many stunts to try as soon as you get the chance I really like this series because it's it's Assyria teaches science basics but is also a bunch of pranks and things you could pull on your friends which it's really really fun and that guy there were some comments about the guy's beard I would love to rock that if I could grow right here and let it just kind of that was well if if I go great that's the look I'll go for this next film is a made by a local filmmaker someone in Charlotte North Carolina this is Walter J Klein and his company and I think this is probably written by his son and it features a comedian character actor that some of you might know from the 70s late 60s Avery Schreiber and this is preventive dentistry and be sharp my stroke just a minute that starts there that's that that's that Wow what is it maestro it's been rumored and I can see rightly so that you've been working laborious Leon your newest and most brilliant concerto whatever in the scale of C gave you that idea cdefg it was Hilde it wasn't it that blabbermouth not exactly Mildred Zelda Jerry Mary who oh I give up yes I admit it I am writing my most ingenious symphony today ingenious whatever mm-hm and do you know what inspired me Hilda no you silly my smile a real beauty isn't it mmm yes I call my music preventive dentistry in B sharp it's original to say the least fantastic to say the least there I was one day looking at the mirror wondering how I could improve my perfection and then it came to me it wasn't my classic nose or my soft flowing hair or even my forgettable music no it was that other set of ivories in my mouth I mean where would I be without my teeth but my stroke just a rich fit but nice job just a rich brilliant genius in a world of rich brilliant geniuses cuz I worry nothing's going to happen to them ah that's how much you know you silly teeth are a living part of you if not looked after they'll be as useless as a dill pickle oh or a dull piccolo but my teeth feel fine everything is not as it seems take me I seem to be a humble likable calm sort of a fellow but inside I'm a raging turmoil of yeah yes you see your teeth may peel Pines but could be slowly breaking up and breaking down instead of marking time I work at maintaining them I practice preventive dentistry well how about helping out some of your fans no no no autographs today I lose more quills that way no mice Joe I mean could you tell us how to take care of our teeth so that we may emulate you that all will see that you are the most benevolent the kindest the most generous man Desmond up already that I should see the day when I would become a dentist well where should I begin a pill pill who's teaching this class sorry no as I started to say if you chew on a disclosing tablet you can see the plaque that has been accumulating on your teeth this closing tablet plaque but this closing tablet is a pill this pill those portions of your teeth that have black plaque my told their friend is an invisible coating on the teeth when bacteria and sugar combine they form a plaque coating which is difficult to remove since you didn't see it it may remain too long in an undisclosed place and the bacteria will begin to eat away at the enamel now don't put the arpeggio before the horse when plaque builds up it hardens into calculus at the gum line calculus builds up and it contains more and more bacteria eventually the infection it spreads deep into the gums and into the jawbone which is bad like a lost cause so you get disposing tablets from your dentist oh you just use food coloring to dye your teeth so you can spot the plaque on Mike that's how to identify the cause of gentle troubles but how do we prevent it business is there's someone out there he'll build up we figuratively speaking must be Susie sure you've got a big I shall tell you how to take care of your teeth then you forget your Hemi Demi semiquaver out of here okay the first and most important thing to remember and to learn for proper oral health is knowing which foods to eat and which foods to use with caution the bones that support your teeth need lots of calcium and phosphorus milk and green leafy vegetables have plenty of it and teeth are helped by chewy foods even carrots celery apples me so with the right diet I'll receive the correct nutrition to be healthy from the inside now what about the outside of your teeth that correct food that you just ate he probably left remnants between those bicuspids in those molars so Betsy there's only one thing to do brushing is one way brushing brushing brushing brushing at least once a day thoroughly and effectively that can remove plaque from accessible tooth surfaces just be sure to brush after the last time you week each day so that none of that plaque goes to bed with you because doing your sweep the mouth is drier and the breakdown is greater a toothbrush like this that has soft nylon bristles with rounded ends they're the best then just brush away no no you don't just brush away like you so so glibly said it takes skilled practice like playing the world too clever leer place the head of your toothbrush alongside your teeth with the bristle tips angled about 45 degrees against the gum line now move the brush back and forth forth and back back and forth with short strokes using a gentle scrubbing motion for the front teeth brush the inside surfaces of the upper and lower jaws by tilting the brush vertically and making up and down down and up up and down strokes with the front part of the brush any questioning but yes you said brushing was good for getting rid of plaque on accessible surfaces but what about those hard-to-reach spaces between your teeth step floss I beg your pardon for my de governor what I meant was dental floss dental floss cleans between the teeth especially at the gum margin where a toothbrush can't reach break off about 18 inches and whined most of it around one of your middle fingers the other end winds around the same finger of the other hand to take up the floss as it is used use your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss between your teeth holding the floss tightly use a gentle sawing motion to insert the floss slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth until you feel resistance never snap the floss into position while holding the floss tightly against the tooth move the floss away from the gum by scraping the floss up and down against the side of the stone do you know about intradural devices no but if you hum a few bars of it I'll take it that's a little inside joke that we use on the on the strengthening circuit insert dental devices such as the specifically shaped toothpick and rubber tips may be used to clean between the teeth just under the government toothpaste only with white wine I mean which time the Council of dental therapeutics of the American Dental Association has recognized that some fluoride toothpaste can help prevent dental decay now let me ask you something how do you know if you already have any type of gum disease I guess if I feel some pain did you see that's why I'm the maestro I know this heavenly warning buying do you have Zelda do you have bleeding gums when you're brushing your teeth do you have bad breath are your gums soft swollen or tender is there pus from under the gum line when you press do you have any loose paper your gums shrinking away from your teeth is there any change in the way your teeth come together and is my answer is yes to any of those seven symptoms I might have gum disease Mike you betcha Philippa knee but there's only one sure way to know and this is an important point in preventive dentistry visit your dentist regularly your dentist can tell you if you have any disease or if you're simply not getting proper nutrition and once plaque has been converted into heart calculus only the dentist or dental hygienist can remove it your dentist can clean and examine your teeth he spots dental problems long before they become too serious to be corrected should I tell you my teeth look and feel fine rejoice but what about when your oldest reading these teeth were meant to last a lifetime with proper care I don't know about you but I don't want to need dentures for the rest of my life this is what your concerto is all about correct a dedication to my teeth and their care [Music] and now preventive dentistry in Asia [Music] [Applause] you yikes the the thing about the preventative dentistry and actually about Walter J Klein films in general is that they're a little zany but not really zany enough yeah it went on way too long the joke went on way way too long but you know I do covet those kettledrum teeth giant teeth sculptures I don't know where those came from but those are glorious I would love to have those I don't know how I'd incorporate them into my life with my wife but I have a basement I can put it in the basement excuse me so what do we got here this next film is is part of series that used to show on television there was two series that I have there's probably more like you know I say two but their's was inside out which I've shown things from and then I've shown some for a an older it was an older group of kids called self incorporated and so they are very similar and how they talk about the feelings associated with being a kid in the school environment school climate school echoes echo system and often are very are open-ended which is very frustrating for adults and the idea is you would watch this film on television and then your teacher would have discussion points and we'd talk about it and write about it so here's by whose rules [Music] I'm only using this tape for my own information no one else we use it just so I can get the quotations right hey mr. Langston what do things stand now I've agreed to present the whole matter of the Board of Education at their next meeting mrs. : Matt will be there where do things stand now we've agreed to discuss everything with the school board well what is everything first of all every school policy which affects student rights and how'd you get a new election declared and get the suspension take it off my record well tell me Matt how did it all get started well it actually got started in history class project well questions group 1 ok very good what's making poop cheese hey come on man we don't have much time ok our subject is political reform and the way that we could start political reform is to change things in this school ok thanks to reform one with what more of an open school what do you mean that more open school trend like being able to go off on school grounds during lunchtime [Applause] okay - we don't think we should have hall passes does that mean we can go to the library anytime we want to almost go over it okay okay okay look everybody be able to get into their ideas and questions later on okay finish up three three we don't think we should have grades okay we thought about the real political party than their convention they put together platform it's a list of things that they plan to do and we thought if everyone run for student offices in the school we'll put out a platform then the other students would know what they stand for I think the problems with this platform idea we're obvious right from the start anybody anything done I think they had a good idea about going out for lunch but with the time we have now it doesn't make sense to go anywhere we have to have more times we can get back yeah I think we should have just much prior to teachers and if we have a bad teacher we should be able to send the teacher here you have these rowdy young people first thing getting up shouting in class disorderly showing no respect whatsoever we want the ones who are making the noise we were just trying to present our ideas to the class mm-hmm and that's what free speech is all about you don't stop one group from presenting their ideas because you're afraid of what someone else will do in order to have a good learning experience you have to have an atmosphere of freedom really fast and you're gonna take chances I'm sure my being a lawyer has been some influence on Matt we talk about politics at the dinner table everybody's encouraged to develop his own opinions I think of politics is my hobby it's my job to anticipate trouble I've got to protect the rights of the majority to get an education I propose to the student council they make it a rule there anybody who runs for any kind of student council office has to have a platform any questions I guess Mike will you define platform before us platform is like if somebody's running for certain offices or something they tell what they want to do if they want to change rules or make better than the rules that are there or get something done I think people just lie they'll use that line vote for me and I'll set you free they're lying don't vote for him you can tell when people are lying okay anybody do you think mr. Waxman will let us try to change all his rules well Eve I think you should try and find out okay who's our for it who's all against it two-thirds of the student council the most responsible students in the school voted against the idea yeah what if they hate it I would still have to ask myself whether or not in good conscience I could turn this school into a political arena you know don't you that the student council voted against having everybody run on platform right yeah well Matt and I decided that our platform was good and we were gonna run no matter what and once we knew that we were running I thought well why don't we get other people to run for the other offices and then we could all run together and be a slate and then we could really get something done so you got to give this slate of candidates in your history class right was it the same group they thought off the platform idea yeah we were all friends were all pretty political hey how about an alliance or constructive teaching Hey and I'm Nation action yeah yeah but it kind of seems that you know the subject really isn't about teaching it's about right so that's what we're trying to do think of something there right reform is it's going to happen soon sure dude unified for Rights of expression this late was I ran for president Tracy for vice president Terry for Secretary Monica for treasurer what next I wanted to get known so Tracy wrote up an article for the school newspaper this article is the opinion of a special interest group if I print this opinion I've got to print everybody's opinions but this will make it more interesting I think it would get out of hand pretty quickly a lot of stuff they print in the paper nobody reads isn't the Chess Club special aren't you screwed what about the watch these groups are open to everybody look at sports if you're not good enough you could just just don't get into all that okay try to see this thing from my point of view for a minute I've got the whole community to answer to I've got the school board I've got your parents I've got other everybody else's parents and I don't think for a minute they're gonna stand by and watch the school attacked through the school newspaper we're not attacking this red hoodie thing puts up the money for the school newspaper it's the school boy just relax - were not attacking the school I'd say you've got some pretty negative ideas about some of its policies well I'd say we've got positive approaches to making better rules it seems to me you kept pretty calm yeah we all decided before when then nobody get mad we did he just throw us all out and say I told you so they're all just a bunch of troublemakers I would advise any student who's going to stand up for his rights to do it calmly politely and constructively if you attack why then the people have no response other than to get mad at you and sometimes they have a lot of power over you if you're reasonable then they have a chance to be reasonable back Matt ask some that you didn't take mr. Langston's advice and drop the whole thing no but you did give up an article we made our own memory a graph of it how did you feel about the Shu students handing out slating platform they were within their rights I tried to tell them it was bad judgment but judgment is a funny thing nobody can be right all the time no matter how wise and experienced a person is he needs to listen to the ideas of others that's the ideal of our democratic society these kids were taking the education that they learned in the classroom and using the real life that's what it's all about because history is not something that just happened 200 years ago it's happening today tomorrow Tracy and I proposed to the student council they make the sheer slate official candidates in the election how did that go there again you had the existing student council voting heavily against their proposal it's proof something what would you say it proves it proves to me that we already have a pretty good way of installing student officers what was the norm of procedure for nominating candidates for office well the student council nominate two people for each office and they have to be approved by the principal and the faculty advisor I could have vetoed the nominations of Matt and Tracy right then but I respected their right to get nominated by the normal procedure and you got nominated for president and Tracy for vice-president anyway right could chisel that on my grade this man believes in thermal procedure how did this use Lake run its campaign well we handed out a few more memory graph sheets well I wanted to put up posters but my feeling about the posters was that some of these kids hadn't been nominated by the normal procedures and didn't have a right to put up posters we were a group that stood for something we wanted to campaign some of these sure candidates really didn't have a chance they were just trying to ride in on the popularity of Matt and Tracy Tracy and I wanted to put sure after our names on the ballots but he wouldn't allow that either find it Matt and Tracy but sure after their names on the ballot they would have had a tremendous advantage because of the publicity I was already getting phone calls from some of the parent because of the mimeograph sheet what happened in the assembly well every officially nominated candidate is supposed to make a short speech before the student body Tracy and I made an agreement to talk about sure and ask the people to ride in the names for Terry and Monica if I'm elected vice president I would do my best to get the things done that you feel and I feel should be changed [Applause] keep whistling and the yelling down please your applause will be sufficient our next candidate for our vice president and the student council is Tracy wine [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Thank You mr. Langston and thank you everybody the first thing that I would like to say is that I'm up here as part of the sure slate which stands for [Music] I want to make a couple of ground rules right here I had hoped it wouldn't be necessary and the one there would be no campaigning for any candidate our slate except I was officially nominated I kind of got disgusted because well I didn't think it was right and plus and I didn't know what to say next and I was WOW that clear to you alright you may proceed in I there's nothing else I want to say thank you [Applause] I was scared everybody knew I was the other person mr. Langston was talking to our last candidate is candidate for president of the student council Matt Cole yeah [Applause] speaking softly what'd I say I believe is right I think he's wrong for them to forbid me to talk about sure please just take your seat [Applause] quiet please alright you have heard the speeches of all the candidates you may have an opportunity to vote for the candidates of your choice this afternoon during six-hour class please do not vote for Matt code as disqualifiers not Westeros this kid was so intent on a ram running through this sure thing they did directly disobeyed me in for the whole student body and disrupted the process of student elections now if I let this go by how am I supposed to run this school run a minor help count the votes said I got a lot of votes anyway and you guys have been for two days second I think the suspension ought to be taken off Matt's record I consider it very detrimental and substantially unfair to him I'm not willing to do that man is a responsible person and he did what he did mr. Langston you forced Matt into a confrontation no one forced man and do anything you forced him to back down on everything he stood for I consider that a confrontation mrs. Cole I'm not saying I did everything right here I'm saying that what I did I believed was right now if you wish I'm willing to take the whole thing and put it before the school board what if the school board decides against you well wouldn't feel very good about it we would have to think out everything very carefully and decide if we want to take it any further yeah if the school board decides that next year we'll have slates and platforms I can live with that yeah it would give us time to have orderly change would you do it all over again sure south incorporated was supported by a consortium of 35 educational agencies this program was produced by ket C television st. Louis Missouri under the supervision of a IT agency for instructional television that kid is destined for a world of trouble I can identify a little bit I was always just questioning what was happening with adults and and all that I can I was fairly quiet kid but yeah I was always like well that's just not fair that's just not fair and yeah so yeah it's all downhill for that guy so thanks everybody for tuning in today for lunch and I will see you on tomorrow Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. we have a Friday guest announce it's Melissa Ullman who is a longtime friend of mine and also she is at UNC getting her PhD and has a couple of films for my collection that she has she's writing about one of them and has notes about the other ones so that's Friday that we're gonna do that if you liked what you saw and you're on youtube please please like and subscribe that means something to YouTube also you can go to AV geeks calm and you can see what we've broadcast in the past they've been all archived there and sure enough the copyright hammer came down because I showed Herculoids yesterday Herculoids cartoon and got an immediate like we're gonna block this so I had to delete most of the Herculoids so if you're watching on on youtube you'll see a little bit of the Herculoids intro and then it cuts away Warner Brothers owns it now and they were not happy about it being on YouTube so there you go patreon is a place to donate to where you can support what we do we actually bought a film on eBay and have been contacted by people who are on to send us film so we're paying for shipping to get those films to come to us so patreon helps with that it's a way to kind of pay for increasing the collection and ultimately digitizing them and getting more stuff out there so thank you for those of you that have contributed in the past and thank you for watching and thank you for sharing that's another way is to share with your friends and family what we're doing means a lot to have you tuned in and we will see you again tomorrow everybody have a good rest of the day good bye
