so so so so so so so so so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was kind of an experiment um so there were two reels of film that said encyclopedia uh i'm said well it's like computer pretending um american express when was the a-roll and one was the b-roll and so the idea is that you have this back and forth you have image on one reel and then at the same time on another reel you have what's called slug and it's basically black so what you can do is you can optically print having the two things going at the same time and um this creates a you know a seamless uh trend you can do transitions where you're fading you can do uh things like um you know just these nice cuts without seeing a uh splice line and so ideally that lined up so that if it was i think i noticed it was a little bit off one way or the other um but yeah they would all line up until you get this this complete transition now unfortunately i didn't have sound with this so i don't know what this is about i think it's american express trying to court uh people in the military um because there's a lot of people service people uh wearing uniforms so i think that's the goal um i don't know a lot beyond that i don't know when it was made none of that stuff but uh yeah it's it's kind of uh kind of fascinating to see stuff like that um so i've been showing stuff that is related to uh uh the um well what have i been showing oh i've been showing illustrations by these kids that are homeschooling that uh tune into the stream but can't comment because they don't have they're not old enough their kids uh and there's a lot of them that are showing me uh obsessing over lasagna um that's peter here's one i'm shopping for lasagna but it's sold out um and then finally another peter and that was by steven this is another uh peter one where i'm a big roly-poly guy um who is i'm stuck on the ground like a turtle and i'm trying to move my head towards the plates of lasagna which are just out of reach um yes it's true they were sold out of lasagna so i got uh ravioli oh i should i should cover that because i'm not really endorsing chef boyardee but uh i do have some lasagna on order so i'm gonna eat ravioli today in the meantime let's watch a nasa film that talks about flight directors enjoy [Music] johnson space center in houston what you are watching is a simulation of the first space shuttle flight now scheduled for later this year this is a rehearsal for the real thing a flight control team of some 75 people will work here round the clock from just before launch at the kennedy space center florida to touch down on a dry lake bed near the mojave desert with a request these rehearsals are taken very seriously by the flight control team each person knows that they may be called upon to make quick accurate decisions under a lot of pressure the simulations which are done repeatedly help them to learn to deal with nearly every contingency columbia houston through gold stall for six and a half minutes okay hank hear you loud and clear pete frank is chief of the flight control division simulations are very interesting uh events that occur here in the control center they're first of all to say they're very realistic very high fidelity simulations especially from the flight controller's viewpoint uh the flight crew of course don't get the same physiological sensations that they would get in space flight in their but their data and everything that's presented to them in the simulator it's very realistic but here in the control center uh of course we don't have any peculiar physiological things to to have to simulate so by presenting the data on the uh on the display system and having the rest of the system respond in a way that it would would also respond during a flight to a flight controller here it can get so realistic that it there are times when you actually forget you're simulating and and you become so involved and so wrapped up in the simulation it's it really uh sometimes feels like it's the real mission it's it's that high fidelity thing the youngest member of the flight control team is 19 year old jackie parker she is working toward becoming a data processing system flight controller with responsibility for the space shuttle's computer system i don't think the toughest part is the mission itself because i think by the time we get to the mission we will be very well prepared and we have such we've learned and built up such confidence in our team um that that it that is not the most difficult i don't feel right now i think is the most difficult it's the learning the system is very complex it's not the type of job where you come to work you are have a project you finish a project and you get a pat on the back or a stop on hand or whatever and you're done with the project and then you go into another one it's not at all like that your training process is never ending you're always learning you're always studying and i think that's it i don't get them we don't get immediate feedback we we just don't and it's very hard um in that we're so used to instant rewards and things that we do and it's not the case and it's just a process of accepting that and continuing on and learning without the instant feedback there will be little room for error during the mission so when a lead flight director detects a problem in the simulations he lets people know about it you guys better start getting these things on mission notes i'm getting five requests from five operators and the capcom's trying to talk and we're trying to listen to the ground we're not going to get there gentlemen start writing them down just trying to really find out now if it's a true nasa's flight control team preparing now for the critical part they will play in upcoming space shuttle missions okay [Music] all right i like that uh that music it's pretty great uh so behind me oh god so the webcam is it's not like a mirror it's it's flipped and it's just really annoying um so behind me is uh my sintel film scanner uh and we have a film set up which is also kind of loosely related to what we just saw it's called a trip to the planets made in the early 60s and i think it's encyclopedia britannica now it's super faded red so i tried to uh tweak it a little bit but um it's you know the colors are not going to be great now it is something that later we can when i capture the i can actually tweak the colors and make them kind of pop a little bit better so here's trip to the planets enjoy i am willing as one days i watched years ago become everyday fact now i want you to come 20 years into the future journey to the planets the journey is fiction but the facts about the solar system and about the planets are as accurate as science can make them today minus 45 seconds minus 40 seconds telemetry in large condition perimeter minus 35 seconds [Music] poised above the powerful booster rockets ready to begin our trip to the planets ten nine eight seven six five four three two one fire mark our trip to the planets has begun the smaller streamlined shuttle boat carries us through the thick atmosphere of earth toward the larger interplanetary ship [Music] in the vacuum of space the interplanetary ship coasts in a parking orbit waiting for our space taxi we slowly overtake the giant ship and to attach ourselves to its side so we can board it [Music] our spaceship roars out of its parking orbit back on earth when we plan a trip we know that san francisco will be two weeks from now where we left it today and we know that we will find london world war three years in space our destiny we're headed towards the sun very much like going downhill because the sun's enormous gravitational field pulls our ship toward it just as it pulls all of their bodies in the solar system to orbit but as the planets were sun centrifugal force counterbalances the gravitational attraction these two forces centrifugal force and gravitational pull are opposite and equal which keeps the planets in their orbits and prevents them from flying out or from approaching the sun too closely the sun's gravity and our own momentum have taken us as close to the center of our solar system as we can safely go so the captain turns the ship around [Music] [Applause] [Music] the engines are fired in the opposite direction to reduce our speed the sun is gigantic if it were hollow a million earths could fit inside it and it's noisy too this tape recorder is reproducing radio waves from the sun of our ship all the energy in the solar system but how does it produce this tremendous energy scientists believe the sun is mostly hydrogen and the tremendous weight of such a huge mass creates super pressures and super temperatures within its center under these conditions of enormous heat and pressure hydrogen is turned into helium but in the process a small amount of mass is released as energy this energy works its way slowly outward to the surface relayed from atom to atom it might take 50 million years for this energy to reach the surface of the sun but it will take just a little over eight minutes to get from the sun to earth moving on past the sun we approach mercury the smallest planet mercury is barely half again as large as our moon while venus is almost as large as our earth scientists speculate that when mercury was still a rotating and condensing sphere the sun's strong gravitational pull caused huge ground tides on the planet's still soft surface when mercury finally cooled these bulges hardened and began rotating with the rest of the planet until the strong pull of the nearby sun on these bulges slowed the planet down now it can no longer achieve complete rotation but only yaw slightly from side to side keeping one face continually toward the sun on the sunlit side the sun's rays strike directly and eternally against the rocky surface and raise its temperature to about 700 degrees fahrenheit in contrast the temperature on the dark side is 450 degrees below zero fahrenheit [Music] the next planet out from the sun is mysterious venus hidden for centuries from our optical telescopes by dense clouds until we actually penetrate the cloud layer we can only speculate about the surface of the planet but we know energy from the sun filters through the clouds heating the surface to 800 degrees fahrenheit however the heat which comes back from the surface is trapped under the clouds raising the temperature of the atmosphere this heat once caused speculation that if water were present the surface of venus would be a vast boiling ocean [Music] the first mariner space probe indicated that venus is a dry lifeless desert since water could not be present at a temperature of 800 degrees fahrenheit already venus appears smaller as we speed onto our own earth a day and a half later just beyond our earth mars looks like a red star still later as we approach its orbit we see that mars has two tiny moons the largest only 10 miles in diameter [Music] each spring dark areas of the planet have been observed turning into a green blue color and scientists are fairly certain this seasonal change is caused by a simple form of plant growth we're leaving our spaceship in a parking orbit about the planet to take the shuttle boat down for a closer look [Music] the red coloring of the deserts of mars may be caused by oxidation of iron in the large patches of sand and rock [Music] even in this thin martian atmosphere the winds develop high speeds and with so much light sand on the ground dust storms are frequent it's a desolate landscape and yet one can't help wondering if long long ago before the planet lost most of its air and water there was ever intelligent life on mars a larger ship than ours with a full team of geologists and their equipment may one day give us the answer when we leave mars we leave the group of inner planets these planets near the sun including our earth and pluto the outermost planet have certain characteristics in common they are all relatively small solid bodies composed of rock and metal because they are earth-like the latin word for earth terra is used and they are called the terrestrial planets just beyond the inner planets is a ring of thousands of orbiting rock metal fragments ranging in size from a grain of sand to several hundred miles in diameter these are the minor planets or asteroids beyond the asteroids is the first of the gas giants jupiter in fact jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system the enormous speed of jupiter's rotation pulls the gaseous surface into bands the great red spot may be clouds over a huge floating mass of solid material if we compare the sun jupiter and the earth we realize the great differences in size between the sun and planets jupiter has 12 moons the largest two are each as big as the planet mercury some of the others are too small to be seen without a telescope even this near the giant planet we put our ship into a parking orbit again and take the shuttle boat for a look deep inside jupiter's atmosphere we don't really know what lies beneath the thousands of miles of atmosphere but we're fairly certain that jupiter and all the other giants are predominantly hydrogen the surface temperature is very low these outer clouds of the planet are probably made of frozen ammonia crystals suspended in an atmosphere of hydrogen and methane gas violent electric storms and winds of cyclone force churn the atmosphere a blast of wind catches our wings it flips our shuttle boat over and over pulling us down deeper and deeper into jupiter's unknown depths the captain fires the rockets and the boat surges forward gradually moving upward to the outer edge of jupiter's atmosphere now we must travel more than 400 million miles further out from the sun to get to our next target saturn surely the most unusual planet in the solar system besides its beautiful rings saturn has nine moons one of them titan is the largest moon in the entire solar system larger than the planet mercury and almost as big as mars it is the only moon in the solar system known to have an atmosphere and this atmosphere is mostly methane a gas poisons to man at this enormous distance from the sun ammonia and some of the methane is frozen and looks like snow the rings of saturn are nearly 200 000 miles wide but they are so thin they virtually disappear when seen on edge from a telescope on earth they may be no more than 10 miles thick and from a distance look quite solid but the closer we get to them the less substantial they appear as our boat coasts into the outer ring we find ourselves surrounded by billions of particles the size of grains of sand most of them are ice crystal and they all glisten brilliantly in the sunlight the remaining gas giants uranus and neptune are much like saturn except they have no rings but since distances even in our tiny solar system are so immense there isn't time to visit them for even at a million miles an hour a trip back to earth from pluto at the outer edge of our solar system would take five months [Music] approaching earth the captain turns the ship around one last time the rockets are fired to slow our descent to earth it's good to us it has an abundance of oxygen and of water and of the things we need for life we're used to the length of its day and to the changing of the seasons yet we cannot help being curious about the planets and one day one of you who are watching now may be on the ship that makes the trip which was only imaginary today [Music] all right so that was um i had to stop at the beginning because i don't know if you noticed the frame was doing this and there's some internal stabilization software that sometimes freaks out as it's misreading um uh perps so i had to fix that so yeah we had our obligatory german rocket scientists talking who wasn't uh werner von braun he was another guy probably on the von braun team though um let's see what do we want to talk about now let's talk about feelings of rejection enjoy well don't enjoy feelings of rejection but enjoy the film that is about feelings of rejection to avert appearances quiet competent girl but still she is not well she is troubled by hezy spells she tires easily these are not uncommon complaints but most thorough examination has shown no physical reasons for them such as tumors anemia or infections because of the possibility of emotional causes she has been referred to a psychiatrist but i do have these awful headaches i don't just imagine them of course you don't tell me about your most recent one it was only last night i left the office at about the usual time there was a good movie on and i decided i'd see it after supper [Music] hello daddy oh my good you bad omar hello jenny [Applause] how's my handsome daddy tonight i'll go on let me read my paper no virginia i don't want you sitting on the arms of chairs oh mother i won't hurt the old chair oh she's all right william have you fixed the furnace why do i have to remind you of everything margaret you look tired i'm all right mother well come to supper all of you [Applause] girls are not feeling very well will you do the dishes and finish the ironing oh mommy i can't i've got an important date i have to get dressed my aren't you the popular one guess i'll do it won't you says yes i'll do it [Music] uh [Applause] [Music] so [Music] so so i couldn't finish mommy i'm not feeling very well another headache let me get to an aspen dear i'll be alright i got when i go upstairs giving up a decision to see a movie in order to help with the housework is not out of the ordinary in itself but when this is followed by feelings of more than usual tiredness nervousness and discomfort it suggests emotional difficulties which the patient herself does not understand you didn't have the headache at the office or on the way home not until after dinner no weren't you disappointed not to see that movie well yes i was well tell me more about your headaches i had an awful one last week it was so bad i couldn't go to the office party everyone was going the girl spent a lot of time talking about it i was going to get a new blouse to wear with my blue suit it was a sailing day before the party i was going after work and then miss henderson asked me to stay and do some extra typing for one of the girls i know you won't mind dear barbara's still anxious to get off on time i just gotta get my hair done for the party yes thanks mark you're a deer she finds no comfort in agreeing she simply cannot disagree yes mother what kept you so late i had a lot of work to do did you get the blaster mother well when i get time now don't forget dear i want you to look nice for tomorrow the next day i went to the store there was one the sales girl wanted me to buy it reminded me of one of my mothers she said it was just right for me i wasn't sure the inability to say no easily persuaded against her own feelings she accepts other people's choices and not her own for which she suffers [Music] result in the familiar headache and the feeling of utter weariness [Music] as the interviews continue memories of earlier life reveal the same inability to assert herself it gradually becomes clear that this developed from the fear of losing love and of not being wanted a school friendship she was wonderful so popular and pretty we used to go everywhere together everyone liked her but i was your best friend the friendship gave the patient a feeling of being wanted and useful she enjoys her friend's successes without exposing herself to dangers of competition she dreads competition but living through the friend she cannot satisfy her own need for expression there was a boy who took me out once in a while he was very nice i guess gene got quite a crush on him because she flirted with him a lot i guess she got to like her too i remember one time when i was going along the street they were standing talking to some other people and they didn't even say hello i felt terribly hurt did you say hello no i didn't want to vote in when they didn't say hello i felt awful [Music] afraid to join them she has not noticed she feels wrongly that she is not wanted always this inability to stand up for herself in situations calling only for normal competition i remember once when i was about 12 we were having a school play i wanted to be the princess i practiced alone in my room until i knew it perfectly [Music] all right now we want to choose a princess who wants to be first all right gene a fairy went to marketing she bought a colored bird it's saying the sweetest thrill of song that ever she had heard she sat beside his pants cage and listened half the day and then she took then she then she opened up the door and let it fly away all right margaret it's your turn a fairy went out and marked marketing she bought a print a colored bird it's saying that we just shriller phone but ever she had food all right dear i guess you don't do it very well afraid to compete for fear that she might lose friendship gradually margaret with the doctor's help discovers what her childhood has made her act and feel as she does now margaret was sheltered too much as a child her well-meaning but over-anxious mother often discouraged her by exaggerating the dangers of everyday life margaret stop that you'll burn yourself child mommy doesn't want her darling baby to be hurt as she hears the all too familiar don'ts her normal need to learn by doing is curved she clings to her mother for safety no margaret it's sharp you cut your hand you mustn't do that you'll smash your thumb margaret how many times must i tell you not to climb you could fall and break a leg those are sharp scissors you'll cut off your fingers marker little girls don't climb on gates you'll hurt yourself and get all dirty mommy wants you to be her good little girl and keep neat and tidy love mommy she depends now too much on her mother's approval it is safest to avoid all activities which seem dangerous or which her mother wouldn't like a little sister now mother's affections must be shared the baby takes up time and attention that otherwise would have been hers [Music] [Music] when she feels insecure she seeks protection but too often she chooses awkward moments to ask for it [Music] no no go and play daddy's busy can't you come and get this child normal rebuffs are exaggerated by her feeling of insecurity she has too few devices to turn to normal activity has already been too much discouraged when she cannot get attention she feels she is not wanted she competes for the attention she feels she must have mommy and daddy don't love little girls that show off to show off is bad if you are bad no one will love you [Music] she tries other ways creative ways to get attention and affection but finds no encouragement whatever i've never seen a bear looks like that but mommy robert take your dirty paints away i don't want my laundry all messed up her parents don't understand margaret's needs and this rob serve an outlet through self-expression because her self-confidence has already been damaged she gives up easily can't you look after this child look after yourself i'm busy now be a good girl i'll follow you she learns to be a good girl to do what she is told this gains her very little but she runs no risk of losing approval margaret's parents are not unusual parents who are fond of their children can still discourage them from growing up active and competent [Music] you've been a good girl by the age of eight she is a model child what she is being made she now is she never quite grows up even as an adult she is still the good child in order to grow up she must learn how to face up to her difficulties the model child does not necessarily become the happy adult she's a good girl um [Music] by now she is able to work out her personal problems with others in a group under guidance in this understanding environment margaret finds that she is not alone with her difficulties she feels that she belongs she is no longer so afraid to express her real feelings and to assert herself one is featured in many of the fashion magazines it's the new spring shade in blue it's a very sensible walking shoe and yet a very dressy shoe i have your size in this she is not so bound by the crippling ties of childhood [Music] no as a matter of fact i don't like any vote at all please show me something else please don't feel a little dare [Music] with new understanding her headaches bother her less having fewer conflicts she has fewer symptoms in all her contacts at home in the office and with her widening circle of friends she is beginning a new life some lessons of childhood can be learned too well and carried over into adult life sometimes they can become the source of illness which has no discoverable basis in physical conditions through increased understanding of these factors the individual learns how to stand up for himself he becomes more and more able to take part with confidence and satisfaction in the world of his fellow men [Music] so [Music] [Music] blame the mom the mom did it um it's fascinating uh these films about you know they're really trying to be progressive and talk about you know what your current state is is based on your previous state you learn behaviors and and all that so it's uh it's kind of great um i'll tell you what's great is uh stephen um these guys pay attention these kids pay attention these homeschoolers and so there's a picture of me holding a film and i'm super happy and it's count spyro spirochete so he actually looked up how to spell spirochete and remembered that that's one of the films that i was actively still trying to find uh that it went for a lot of money on ebay and i'm sorry that i didn't do the maximum bid and like really because i haven't seen it again and it's a venereal disease film and so um it's sad another thing that popped up is this was the day that i said um that i liked i was gonna get a hot dog last week i think it was like yeah a week ago uh we went to clues which is a favorite raleigh hot dog place uh and i'm excited because i have a film in one hand and hot dog another but i don't know if you can see there's a very sad lasagna in the corner because i've changed my diet and then also here reveals their little tour this is did this stephen also did this if you open a door in the archive i don't know if you can see here there's a bunch of looks right here there's a bunch of coffee under the microwave but then there's a closet that is filled with uh lasagna so there you go they know more about me than i than i know myself so this uh film answers the question um it's not really a question but it talks about it's not where you're going it's how you get there enjoy [Music] hello i'm ozzie olson one of america's biggest recreational sports is boating in cooperation with the united states coast guard office of boating safety i'd like you to see a film on one aspect of safe folding both trailering before we see the film i'd like you to meet some very good friends of mine whose life so many times have depended on a thorough knowledge of their equipment and that safe and proper use jerry grant and dan gurney two of the most famous men in auto racing and scott carpenter the famous astronaut aquanaut let's hear from them for a moment that safety its importance in their lives and how it parallels boating safety ever since man has been designing machines to ride in safety has been his concern but safety is a function not only of machines reliability but the training of the men who operate them even dan gurney's eminently safe cars can be terribly dangerous if the driver doesn't know what he's about so can your combination of boat trailer and car if you don't know how to handle it it can be dangerous learn how you know in in one of the important parts of the whole operation has got to be transporting the race car to the reef race track in a safe manner oh absolutely [Music] we have heard of many cars which have been actually completely destroyed and it hasn't been in a race it's been going to a racetrack transporting across the country with an inadequate trailer and that is a real shame and it's a very poor judgment it's a beautiful day you're on the way to your favorite launching site and a day of fun and relaxation on the water with your wife and kids all's right with the world or is it suddenly your trailer starts to fishtail and sway you fight for control but it's a little late that perfect day has come to an imperfect end with your boat piled up on the side of the road luckily this time injuries and lives have been spared but will it be different next time 1582 deaths occurred last year as the result of boating accidents and that is something to think about seven hundred thousand new boatmen arrive on the water each year this number is not surprising considering the popularity of boating but the surprising thing is that less than half less than half of these seven hundred thousand new pokemon receive any kind of training before launching their new boats small matter well safe boating is tied to a lot of small matters like wheel bearings for your trailer wheels when they're submerged in water as your boat is being launched or recovered bearing grease can wash away another small matter perhaps but just as suddenly as a boat flipping a wheel can seize causing an axle spindle to snap and a trailer wheel goes rolling down the highway looking for an accident to happen small matters well here's another one a canvas cover for your boat a good thing to have but will it resist or fire you'll easily find out if someone tosses out a lit cigar or cigarette butt a little bit of smoke at first and then fire you frantically unhitched the trailer but it's a losing game a fire extinguisher could handle the whole problem but where is it in your boat if you'd had a course in boating safety you might have learned that an extra extinguisher should have been in your vehicle or at the front of your trailer and maybe you could have saved the day is boating safety important is knowing how to trailer launch and recover your boat important you bet it is for a moment then let's go back to that first big day the day you bought your boat a big day in your life one you've saved for you like the feel of the boat the touch it's like buying a new car maybe even better but there's another requirement the trailer you'll haul your boat with in many respects it's a more important purchase than your boat your safety that of your family and that of others can depend on it a key phrase is this match your trailer to your boat it is an absolute must and you'll probably agree it's nothing more than common sense still people spend a great deal of money on a boat and then cut corners by purchasing trailers that aren't quite what they ought to be jerry grant dan gurney and scott carpenter spoke of the need for the balance of components of a machine and the parallel this has between a boat and trailer we saw the parallel a boat flipping from a trailer there are a number of ways this can happen how you take a curve or drive a corner breakage of tie downs or improper boat handling but in this case the trailer was simply undersized for the boat and that perhaps is most dangerous of all so work with your boat or trailer dealer and make sure the trailer is right for the boat you're buying it's forward planning for fun ahead forward planning also includes federal and state regulations for boat trailers these regulations include lights tie-downs directional signals and many others it's as much your responsibility to see that your trailer complies to regulations as it is the selling dealers you might also check the vehicle you'll be using to tow your boat you may need heavy-duty shock absorbers a special rear end heavy-duty springs and vehicle manufacturers call this a trailer package a good man to talk to is the dealership service manager he'll also advise you about mirrors you'll need when towing another good man to have a chat with is a knowledgeable coast guard auxiliarist for u.s power squadron member the boating tips he can supply come from experience and training for example how to back up your trailer and vote practice on a supermarket or shopping center parking lot use boxes or something similar to simulate a launching ramp and other backing situations backing is basically a matter of this turn the steering wheel to the right and the trailer will turn to the left turn the steering wheel to the left and the trailer will turn to the right simple well not really practice this and often you should practice often enough so they become second nature go back to your driveway again you're all ready to go but stop before you ever leave is everything secure what about the safety chains properly attached the chain should cross from right to left and left to right they also should have proper slack proper slack is approximately six inches above the road this allows plenty of room for negotiating curves turning corners and backing another check off item is tie-downs are they all secure check this and use your tag or bow line as a trailer tie-down for additional security while trailering check the fire extinguisher then inspect the boat for placement on the trailer chocks is it properly in place at the bow midship and stern check the stern tie-down strap how about the gear you've loaded is it secure don't overload your boat either on the trailer or in the water overloading can be dangerous when towing and fatal in the water also are your trailer lights working properly left turn right turn brake lights license plate light hazard warning signals the trailer you see here has a strap for additional security at the bow and stern if your trailer is not so equipped run a nylon line through the bow eye of your boat and wrap it around the stanchion then you're finally underway everything is ship shape but still there are other precautions keeping your distance with all the weight you're pulling it takes longer to stop so keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead drive safely and at your launching area park your outfit away from the ramp this is a matter of ramp courtesy in addition remove the canvas cover and prepare the boat for launching when it's your turn to launch remember your backing techniques use mooring lines secured to the boat there a safety measure should the winch line part and they allow pulling the boat to a mooring after it is waterborne now with your trailer in the water release enough slack line from the winch to launch and slide the boat into the water check the boat for required federal equipment the coast guard auxiliary and or power squadron will give you the requirements they are life jackets fire extinguisher horn and running lights now let's discuss recovery of your boat the person in the boat should use a paddle to maneuver the boat to the dock or the trailer you can then put one of your crew ashore to secure the tagline next with your trailer in the water you're ready to secure the winch line to the eye of the boat then with your passengers out of the boat start taking in on the winch crank the boat onto the trailer until the bow rests against the stanchion stop then the winch man should secure the tagline to the trailer stanchion check to be sure the boat is properly on the trailer if so pull away from the ramp remember that other boatmen may be waiting remember also to pull the drain plug allowing bilge water to drain check everything again just as you did before leaving home as an additional precaution you should carry a spare tire jack lug wrench and a spare wheel bearing a bearing can be a difficult part to obtain on a weekend take care to maintain proper tire inflation and if your trailer is so equipped maintain proper hydraulic brake fluid in your trailer's brake system well there you have it you've heard from mr olson jerry grant dan gurney and scott carpenter now let's hear
