foreign buddy buddy I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films uh that were sometimes filmed in black and white um and uh we Delight in that because early Motion Picture photography um there while there were experiments in color uh in the 20s 30s and before uh it wasn't readily available and it was very uh not very cost uh it was very cost prohibitive to try to do something like that at that time period when that film was shot which was probably in the 20s or 30s anyways um that was from the Mogul Brothers collection uh we love the Mogul Brothers collection because it's a variety of different things uh that have uh it was at a film library in New York that you could rent or you could buy films from and uh it ended up at Anthology film archives in New York City uh in the Lower East Side and then uh part of it went to the prelanger archives part of it went to Library of Congress part of it went to the Oregon archives and we've been scanning the Oregon archives uh copies of stuff so at some point there'll be a bunch of Mogul Brothers stuff online all right let's see one of the cool things about visiting Los Angeles when we were on our road trip was it had just rained and everything was Lush there were beautiful wildflowers everywhere and here's a film that kind of talks about that a little bit kinda flowering desert enjoy thank you foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] there are two bands of desert regions that circle the Earth in the northern and southern hemispheres trade winds and mountain barriers limit the rain that would normally fall Within These bands there are dry lands in the southwestern United States and deserts somewhat like the Sahara Arabian and Gobi Desert along the Pacific coast mountains block off rain from sections of the Interior to create such deserts as California's Mojave and Colorado deserts many people think of deserts as flat Sandy Barren and hot and deserts are often just that here in Death Valley we see that a desert can also be Rocky and mountainous and just as a desert can be unbearably hot in the daytime so it can be freezingly cold at night a desert is usually dry the annual rainfall is ordinarily less than five inches sometimes rain may not fall for several years yet cloudbursts May suddenly fill Deep River beds for an hour or so often the winds are so strong that bushes are uprooted or buried under drifting Sands under such conditions of barren soil of slight and only occasional rains of great heat and freezing cold life would seem impossible but life adapts itself to the conditions of the desert just as it does to the cold of polar regions and to the heat of the Tropic zones at a first glance the desert seems Barren but a Second Glance shows that the desert supports an amazing array of life flowering plants shrubs and trees Birds insects reptiles mammals as compared with zones having more rainfall the plant life is squat yet under the favorable growing conditions of Springtime of rain and lower temperatures the desert blossoms magically with brilliant flowers coreopsis and mallow and hundreds of other plants that lie dormant the rest of the year the shrubs Blossom too this is the Mojave Yucca commonly known as Spanish dagger because its leaves are sharp and piercing young shrubs May grow very rapidly and their flower stalks May shoot up like that of this Whipple Yucca or Lord's Candle but in general the growth of shrubs is slow like the growth of sage Greasewood or their sokotillo which protects itself during dry periods by shedding its leaves then when rains come and are soaked up by the ocotillo's Corky Roots lying close to the surface the leaves and flowers appear again desert trees like this Mesquite or the Cottonwood and Ironwood have long roots that dig deep for water some trees like the Smoke Tree and the Palo Verde have very small leaves which are soon lost are the function of the leaf is taken over by the green bark of the branches other trees such as the Washington Palms have large leaves that remain green the year round as do those of the Joshua Tree a number of desert insects make the Joshua their home and among its spiny leaves are built the nests of many desert Birds the bluebird Ren owl Oriole and woodpecker the tree does not bud and Bloom every year but only when the rainfall and temperature are favorable then the seeds are produced they are carried by the wind and by wood rats to propagate Joshua Forest that sometimes spread for many miles also spreading for mile after mile are the flowering plants of the desert when The Rains of spring bring them out of their winter dormancy the flowers paint the gray somber desert with Vivid colors like that of the golden poppy called by the Spaniards of early California copa de Oro Cup of Gold the desert becomes a sea of color this scene could easily be mistaken for a bay and the blue of ocean waters actually the color is that of purple lupine these flowers of the Mojave Desert like the Lupine and owls Clover and San verbena grow at elevations ranging from two to five thousand feet some plants are blossoming each month of the year but most plants grow fast Blossom and produce their seed within the few weeks of the spring rain they cannot withstand the Heat and dryness of the desert summer they have no means of storing moisture and unlike the desert shrubs and trees these plants have no way of reducing the evaporation of moisture through their leaves the flowering plants can only grow mature then cast their seeds onto the Desert Sands to await another favorable spring but during their Breeze Day flowers like Verbena and Primrose give to the austere face of the desert an almost unbelievable Beauty the flowers like the desert candles and desert dandelion are found in Greater profusion than one would expect some are tiny like this one with flowers the size of a dime others are large like the Indian paintbrush not all of the flowers are native to the desert some like the Western gypsum have migrated to the Mojave from the mountains lying west of the desert sunflowers like the deserts Prickly Poppy maybe a family is found in every desert but whatever their Source the spring flowers of the Mojave put on a spectacular show of color that forever contradicts the idea that the desert is barren in the Colorado desert smaller than the Mojave and lower in elevation the spring flower show extends to the cacti Mount San Jacinto is in the distance cacti like the Barrel Cactus flourish on the Gravelly soils that receive seasonal rains and in the spring put forth their waxy blossoms despite the Fearsome appearance of cacti their flowers have a rare Beauty the leaves of the cacti are usually reduced to needles as are seen on this choya cactus these sharp spines give the shrub both armor and shade the skeleton of this choya is a very porous wood within which water is stored cacti such as this mammalaria have adapted themselves to lands which became arid gradually they have no clear-cut relationship to other plant families but there are suggestions of relationship to such widely differing forms as the rose and Myrtle there are over 1200 species of cactus such as this Hedgehog and they're all Native to the American continent they are abundant in the Southwestern State but almost every state in the Union has some species the prickly pear Bears a fruit that is delicious if prepared with caution other types of cactus can provide moisture and food in emergencies but they are usually acceptable only to cattle the stem of the cactus such as this pencil choya has two Chief functions one is storing water the other is the function that leaves generally have the manufacture of food in storing water the stems thick and waxy give up water to evaporation only very slowly in manufacturing food the chlorophyll or green coloring of the stems turns sugars into starches by photosynthesis as leaves do and thus provides food for the very slow growth of the cacti such as the beaver tail tapata how about an introduction to a field of Botanical study that is comparatively new yet highly fascinating since the varieties of flowers Armament shapes and sizes is tremendous the flowers are the cacti such as this night-blooming serious are often so beautiful that they seem in strange contrast with a forbidding appearance of the rest of the plant yet in this contrast of beauty appearing amid barrenness they may be considered symbolic of the desert a final example of adaptation of life to the desert the Saguaro of Arizona largest of the cacti it grows up to 50 feet high and its weight is measured in tons the fluting of its columns is like accordion pleading during dry periods when the cactus is living on its stored water the pleats deepen the Saguaro contracts like an accordion when rains arrive the Saguaro fills out again and like other trees shrubs and plants of the desert it too puts out flowers rich and striking again presenting Beauty for it might not be expected in a land that is by turns burning hot and freezing cold a land of strong winds and little water a land where life could not seem to endure yet as we have seen the desert has a life of its own strange but strong [Music] I feel like that's the narrator from uh Skipper learns a lesson uh that the film company did a series of shorts about ghost towns in the uh from the Gold Rush period and um it was the same beautiful color so basically uh I guess they spent some time out in the uh in the deserts in the west uh in California all right so what do we got here what do we got here uh behind me I have a film scanner and we're gonna watch a film about Leisure Time photography enjoy [Music] [Music] thank you the one with the camera around his neck is world-class photographer Freeman Patterson it's his contention that his photographers most of us don't reach our potential we're Bound by rules and a reluctance to risk creatively that limits our ability to see by altering his perspective to that of a dogs Freeman is picturing the world in a way few of us take the trouble to see I'm doing two things here I'm overexposing the picture because the of the lightness and delicacy of the light and also because of the subject matter I want to keep this feeling of lightness and airiness in this photograph the sun's just coming up this very moment [Music] especially at Sunrise and at Sunset it sometimes sounds really it looks really easy to get a photograph but I think those are sometimes the most difficult of all situations because you've got to be very very thoughtful about exposure you've got to not simply rely on the color and try and get everything into a really fine composition and and sometimes it just isn't possible you have to give up and go away and live with the fact that you're not going to be successful but just getting out and trying is great there are there are lots of times when I come down here in the morning and I make maybe two rolls of pictures and then another morning I'll come and it's just as good but nothing seems to work I can't sing you know I'm a lousy dancer I really can't paint and yet when I was given one of these little machines about 20 years ago I realized that right away I had a tool that I could work with to express myself now I'm not saying that all of the people who Who start to make pictures are people who are not gifted in music and painting and this kind of thing but the what happens is that for a lot of people the camera offers a creative Outlet more than a hobby a place for them to not just get away from work and and from bills and all of that kind of thing but a chance to to express themselves and um the people who who learn the skills which are very easy really to learn and who who practice find that it is a median that just offers them unlimited opportunities for self-expression yeah but you see in a different way I mean should you take are a lot different from um well I think it's it's something that that some people are born with that they perhaps is a greater natural talent but I think that perhaps too much is made of that certainly be since I started photography about 20 years ago my ability to see things has improved dramatically and it began very quickly when you look through that little viewfinder you have a space a rectangle and you you're responsible for organizing where everything goes in that and you begin to realize quite quickly that there are good ways and not so good ways to organize things thank you my point is that you don't have to go to exotic places in order to take pictures that anybody can take them right around home my kitchen is not really any different from anyone else's and and there are all kinds of picture possibilities here the trim on this refrigerator for example picks up the colors of all of the things in the room and I could make it the center of Interest this is a just a red tea box that's sitting on some black and white it's like black and white marble as I stand over it all kinds of things come up in the way of designs the teapots the spice racks the pot holders the knives there's just all kinds of things here this is Freeman's kitchen through the handle of an ordinary beer mug okay can come right in close come right in close to the daisy and and get down just as if a butterfly were Landing pretend you're a butterfly you know one of the really nice things about working with with children and giving them a camera is they have such a completely fresh point of view in fact the people that I enjoy working most with are our children are people who have never had a camera in their hands before because they're they have no bad habits they have no preconceptions they'll they'll try absolutely anything this is a place where we quite often practice because it's uh it's a very lovely wood but you'll notice that all of the trees there's just there's so many uh trees and black trunks that there it couldn't be a very confusing situation if you just sort of set up and and try to photograph it Without Really analyzing it so I'd like to have us go down here and pick out some of the uh the trunks select those and try and make them represent the whole thing again here's a place that I think is quite good okay two things first the whole point of this is to not hold your camera steady okay so the first thing to do is literally jump up and down bounce up and down and click the shutter as you go okay okay now try that try it again because the second picture won't be a bit you've all heard the rule hold the camera steady okay but by breaking this rule you free yourself you're open to results that you can't predict your experiment created make it go up and down the tree talks with the camera like that it's actually a little that's the spirit okay I got my head going too right well you have to okay like that it doesn't always work but exercises like this lead to a greater understanding of your camera is a tool of self-expression is really very nice yeah and then the uh the the wood of the tree above it is sort of a difference yeah can I see what you fellas are talking about come on in oh boy you've got more imagination than I have I guess that's nice well let's take a look at yours what it's a little conventional well it's just very very different uh take a look at this Ellen see how completely differently he's approached this very sort of very vertical compared to mine it's just an example of how two people see completely differently and I think in the same situation I'll take the shot yeah do something about this one too before it goes away now the best light in this kind of circumstance is always when the sun is not shining and this is kind of what we have here today [Music] okay [Music] Red Wings do you see it I guess oh there's so much purple yeah that the yellow becomes a distinctive accent point and establishes Itself by the very fact there isn't very much of it oh right see so it's it's kind of this yellow flower is kind of like uh a piece of silver jewelry on a blue dress okay yeah it's that kind of thing [Music] all right I'll come right ahead I think Evan's done a nice job [Music] it's it's all in the point of view um we had uh a friend here last year who took on us at an assignment her tent she was tending in the backyard and she did two things with it first of all like the outside part was Blue the sort of the upper roof and then the inner roof was red and she shot between them and the blues and the Reds mixed and they were ripply and it just looked like the sun a sunset screaming across water it was all it was was red and blue another good example is the Gravel Pit right behind our house which I consider to be an Abomination because it's an ugly thing that breeds noise and dust and all that sort of business but the class goes down there from time to time and they take pictures that looked like the Sahara Desert or Grand Canyon Grand Canyon and make great things out of it it's really amazing hi what do you think have you made any pictures here yet oh it looked through the camera a bit doesn't look very promising I know because people are not really careful they they they're very sloppy they have no pleasure in taking the real pleasure and taking the picture in the first place they got their negatives back they're they're unhappy again and it turns them off photography you know like to really go out too fast immediate results this is true but I think that no matter what you do if you're if you're a dancer if you're boating or you know canoeing or taking pictures if you you have to be careful and disciplined and that's where the pleasure comes in you know you really see yourself improving but if you just sort of go out and say oh well I don't care you know and oh that looks nice you know it's you know then then it's uh there's no discipline there's no place here because you can't you can't see yourself growing and improving today and it's up to you to do absolutely anything that you want with it you know what I don't want is an egg put on a piece of paper and just simply photographed in other words take that egg and take the label off it stop thinking of it as an egg because as long as you think of it as an egg all you'll ever photographer see is an egg I used to just take pictures of my kids with my camera I had a simple little camera and I took pictures but I always wanted to be able to do something more so Freeman had this photography course up here and I thought my goodness here you live right handy why don't you take the course so my husband encouraged me and finally I put my name in I can't believe the things I learned in in just a few very few days I couldn't believe what I was seeing and I couldn't believe the films that I got it was just fantastic that I had taken them myself I've lived here and I didn't seen any of these things well photography to me is an outlet for my creative Energies not only from the standpoint of the photography itself but I can use my photographs as as design elements in in other work that I do in in fabrics and and crafts of other kinds of a perfect example of how same time Naima would how what depth of field would you give this I'd be tempted to give it very little yeah absolutely there's another one for you James this girl oh I mean they're everywhere you can just work on that you know all over the place oh I can't wait to get a zoom lens learning photography and being sure that you're going to get successful pictures is like anything else it's a matter first of learning the basic craft and then of practice and as soon as you achieve a little bit of facility start to get excited and that is the biggest guarantee success of anything of anything because you develop the motivation are you doing the just working in the uh in the reflection in the reflection of the car window yeah gee I want to know how to be able to get a fantastic sunriser I really want to be able to to photograph wildflowers well and as soon as you're motivated you'll learn you don't have to be born with you know buckets of talent get out there and and do it photography for me has been a medium of discovering the world around me and it's also been a very real means of self-discovery put this in my New Brunswick book when I get around to doing it there are so many things like skiing you can't ski in your backyard you can't do all kinds of things in your backyard and just the cost of going and staying somewhere are tremendous these costs you don't have to involve yourself in when you're doing photography you can if you want to if you really want to go to Grand Canyon photograph it you can pay the money and and so on but it's not necessary for the pleasure and the pictures you get of Grand Canyon probably won't make you as happy as the ones you took in your own flower garden or or you took in off your apartment balcony of say the city at night I think that photography is the most accessible of all of the hobbies and Leisure Time activities it's something that literally everybody can try and can become involved into some extent or the other uh it's something you can do at home no matter if you live in a high-rise apartment or if you live in a little house on the edge of the city or if you live in the country you don't have to go to Australia you don't have to go anywhere the opportunities for pictures are not increased by the the distance you put between yourself and your home see how the light the highlights picked up on the back of each Pew and that's that's just as much a part of this church too as the handbooks or the or the beautiful arches very straight right about there and see what kind of composition you get oh yeah does that have a nice symmetry yes yeah that's nice like five or six arches behind on the other side plus these arches here framing it and I think it would still be very much like your eye sees it oh [Music] try that that isn't that nice that helps a lot well I think that that people get both a mental challenge they get a physical challenge out of Photography and they're involved in in a creative artistic Outlet call it a hobby if you will I think it's more than that as you get serious that that is very very stimulating you you literally start to see and appreciate the world around you in ways that you never suspected foreign [Music] come on spread your wings and fly why don't you live oh live it all you can give you can get it all right [Music] see what I need what I mean [Music] no toe Tapper oh um that's too bad so that's interesting uh definitely has a 1980 feel to it not quite 70s 70s haven't gone away but we're on a new New Path um it's all right you know I think it's interesting this film why it interests me is this the sense that to take a photo you had to get this piece of equipment and then you had to buy this other piece of this material to put in the equipment and take a picture then you had to take that that material and have it processed uh before you could see it in the sense that we all have technology to capture imagery on our device that we use to communicate with people is is significantly different uh what is captured is different why we capture also I think it contributes to the ephemerality there's so many photos that people take that they get lost because there's just so many and you know somebody loses a phone or somebody uh account gets hacked or whatever and in the sense of having a physical uh photo means it lasts longer potentially um and so that's the same with the Motion Picture film and the 60 millimeter films that we have is that they're physical things and so it you can't just accidentally uh throw something away it's harder to do that that being said uh this next film is our 4 000th film that we've shown during this lunchtime streaming show 4 000 films since uh mid-march 2020. and you've been there watching them so I didn't pick anything special I just picked something um that we had next in the in the batch and this is a Coronet film I believe called a bike a birthday enjoy [Music] thank you [Music] or else we can go around this domain are you crazy [Music] [Music] good idea gracious take your mark you're ready Fred go [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] he's complaining about his brakes and his tires and the adjustments on the cables he'll be in about four o'clock can you take care of him yeah sure where are you going to be I gotta run to the warehouse okay hey do you know what happened to those 24 inch frames the um the orange ones yeah uh yeah we put them out back no no they're in the garage now that's right okay well if anyone calls I'll be back about 6 30. all right hi you like it yeah yeah birthdays in a couple days well maybe your parents will buy it for you how much is it well this one's a five speed with a special padded seat this one's ninety dollars this three speed over here and it's only 75 and uh that one up there is 55 dollars I don't know well I tell you what I want you to take this home to your folks have them look at it see what you like okay Jimmy has this one that this one's sword except it's red this one's nice I think they're all nice well I don't have a bike you're too small I am not you fall off and hurt yourself I rode Kimberly's bike you did not Julie it's not your turn to take off fuzzy I'm gonna wait until I finish my coloring book all the kids have them all the kids well some why only some I don't know maybe they can't afford a bike can we afford one we'll see 90 91 92 994 99 what's the largest three digit normally in order 100. 00 999 what's the largest four digit numeral you know under a thousand Bobby what's the largest four digit number one thousand nine thousand 999 is the largest four digit numeral there's the four columns and what would happen if I wanted to say ten thousand what would I have to do I'd have to add a whole new column right 100 000. then I could do 99. who knows what the number is one thousand left okay Jake sounds like a number that is one thousand left of fifty seven thousand six hundred thirty eight fifty six thousand six hundred fifty six thousand six hundred and as many of you commenters have said man it resonated uh hard with me the Snoopy sheets those bikes with the banana seats the the oft often uh dreamed about well I didn't dream about it but I definitely wanted a uh bike with a gear shift for some reason um all that man holy cow I think I was 10 when that film came out um yeah uh so so great but okay uh let's watch another film real quick before we wrap things up what time is it no let's go ahead and watch we'll just watch another one this one has incredibly awkward narration just like uh yesterday enjoy [Music] Dad yes I like going to work with you well I like taking you [Music] oh yeah maybe I'll put you to work today yeah I'm not sure let's see what happens foreign would you like being a dolphin keeper I don't know maybe [Music] [Laughter] I like seeing the dolphins with no one's here so do I thank you there's a right-hander and stand over here like that is that warm it feels they feel kind of like rubber not like a fish well you know he's not I know that's his blowhole on the top of his head they only open that when they're going to breathe tea do you remember how he hears behind the eye there's a slit he hears through that I know another way they use sound oh to locate things right by The Echoes The Echoes tell them when they're getting closer things are moving away how good can they see underwater well we know they can see through the window of watching us right now when they swim up to the top they just take a little breath of air then they come back down hi Mr porpoise I mean dolphin you remember the difference so dolphin is the long nose kind of like a bee corpses have blood heads well their tails are horizontal instead of vertical like a fish and they're swimming that lets them come up to the surface for a breath of air a lot faster steer with a little fence in front of pectoral pins the whole balancing devices I like watching them underwater yeah you can see more of what's going on here [Laughter] oh Steve you remember our other Keepers Ed and Chuck hi Steve how you doing are you staying for the show Dad said maybe I could help oh he did did he why did you stop by helping me get the fish ready how much fish does a dolphin eat about 16 pounds a day wow that's a lot does the dolphin know what what's happening when he comes to the window yeah they keep an eye on us and as soon as we start going upstairs with a pail of fish they already know that and they're waiting for us up there you still want to help all right stay with me I'll show you what to do [Music] those whistles chirps and grunts are the Dolphins welcoming you to the Seven Seas Panorama this building is the first artificial home for dolphins built away from the Coast we try to maintain a salt content of three percent and temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees the animals in the tank are bottlenose dolphins more commonly known as porpoises we'd like to start the show Vicki bringing her belt okay this is coming up right now to get the Bell [Applause] let's get back over here huh [Applause] what we're going to stay with the retrieving here [Applause] trying to go along safer caps out on the water all three dolphins have a cap we have to help them out a little bit by putting that cap on the right way [Applause] you're gonna help you can just put those sailor caps out on the wall [Music] [Applause] everybody they say up there by moving that tail back and forth underwater and when they give us a good dance they get a piece of fish [Applause] and he's going to stay up in her tail right now let's see if she stays up there for a long time [Applause] [Music] thank you and right now we're going to have you go and help with the boat that's floating on the water all the way around the tank very good now when he comes back with the boat take that ring away from him and give him a fish [Applause] okay do it now [Applause] everyone wants to come back in here to get a couple more bits and then we're going to have them all play a few different types of jumps [Applause] now we're gonna get set for a poop jump okay we wanted to get up there part of the Moon [Music] [Applause] if they bump into that they don't get any fish and we have them do it again [Applause] they're all set right now they're coming around let's see if they make it [Applause] sure and everybody made that jump so we're going to take it up a little bit higher we need one more jump they jump there [Music] [Applause] famous [Applause] for everybody here in the tank all right we're gonna go out over the water and try and bait jump we use salty and Angie for this jump and you may get soaking wet on the bottom two benches on the other side of the building directly in front of us so feel free to get off the wing okay do you think they can do this I don't know here he comes [Applause] okay you can try to look over and see sand coming up out of the water okay that's always coming up [Applause] thank you [Applause]
