so so so all right now let me see if i can hold this better um welcome to the lunchtime streaming show heavy geeks i didn't have a chance to get my flatbed scanner working today but that is me um dancing barefoot with film reel in one hand and a piece of lasagna in the other hand um thank you sarah for that drawing um got a lot of amazing drawings uh and stories and comics um and i got a note saying from the kids that are homeschooling that they can read the comments but they since they're kids they don't have youtube accounts so they can't comment which is fine you know but sarah wanted to inject this into the comments and she made a little uh icon image of herself uh the kids have also been paying attention uh peter did a drawing of sean moore old radios and taran tots so it's not just me it's all you guys so it's very exciting very very very very exciting um uh they have identified that i do one of my favorite foods is lasagna so of course they made a lasagna geeks uh banner that i'll put up over there and then of course they made their own av geeks banner where they match the colors uh there'll be more from that including a story that they wrote really just floored me how phenomenal that was so um thank you kids uh peter sarah athena and we're not sure if that's really her name uh and um steven i think i got them all hold on there's there's a lot of them there's like four of them um anyways uh we're here to watch old 16 millimeter films that last film was from the mogul brothers collection via the oregon archive um this next film is uh courtesy at school and if you're homeschooling then it's courtesy at home school enjoy [Music] [Music] so it's easy to recognize curtis and you see it it's even easier to recognize this courteous act jerry didn't mean to hurt anyone he was just in a hurry he didn't think of anything except what he was trying to do get to the ball field first he didn't think of anything else or anyone else that's why he was discourteous courtesy means thinking about other people and showing that you think about them too and courtesy is what jerry's class talked about that morning they talked about what courtesy means some thought courtesy was like kindness another said it was just thoughtfulness someone else said it was chiefly caring about other people all jerry's classmates thought courtesy makes the school more fun and while they went about their work jerry thought about courtesy about how many school rules are based on courtesy getting off the school bus in an orderly fashion is important to safety of course but it's also courtesy it's thinking about other people being careful of playground areas not interfering with others games brown rules they're also courtesy being courteous doesn't interfere with fun it means more fun when boys can get a game started quickly everyone gets to play everyone has more fun taking turns following rules thinking about others all are a part of courtesy in the halls where there are so many of us we have to be especially careful about courtesy but because most of us are courteous we're able to move about get to our rooms and not have much trouble at all in our cafeteria you can see many examples of courtesy we take turns the line is orderly we go to the tables carefully and you can always count on someone helping you with your chair yes in our school you can find courtesy anywhere you look you can see courtesy helping us enjoy ourselves when we go to the auditorium courtesy has a great deal to do with how much we enjoy the program listening quietly is a part of courtesy keeping your attention on the program not bothering others that's being courteous too everyone enjoys the program that way when the end of the program comes it's courteous to applaud clapping your hands is a courteous way of showing that you enjoy the program when the time comes to leave it's courteous to wait to talk about the program until you get back to your room here it's fun to talk about what you saw how much you enjoyed it how funny something was even though you're having fun you take turns speaking when one is speaking the rest listen this is courtesy it's thinking about others and it helps all of us we are courteous and listen even when one of us has a hard time saying just what he means courtesies like these help us all the time they help us when we're working together in the classroom sometimes one of us is doing a problem and we make a silly mistake as joe is doing he isn't changing the inches to feet in his answer we don't laugh and make fun of him instead we help him we get the answer we need and joe feels good that's what courtesy does it helps us work together it helps us make friends and keep friends it helps us to act grown up and it's based on thinking of others at least that's what jerry has decided he's been thinking hard about courtesy this morning you remember why remember how he forgot about everyone else and thought only of what he wanted remember how discourteous he was well he's been trying to think of reminders for himself ways to help him remember to think of others courtesy begins early jerry drew this to remind himself to start the day thinking about others it shows him leaving home in the morning for school courtesy begins early jerry must remember to leave home on time so he can meet his friend jim they can walk together to the bus stop that's the way with courtesy you have more fun more friends at the bus stop you remember that others want to get on just as much as you do you wait so that everyone can get on quickly these drawings should help jerry begin today thinking courteously don't you think so courtesy helps on the playground jerry's picture shows two boys holding a ball back have you ever done that have you ever settled an argument or begun a game this way if you accept the results the game can be started quickly courtesy helps on the playground all the time jerry's next page reminds him that courtesy works in the school building here a boy is helping a girl at the drinking fountain there are other things that jerry could show too he could remember to walk not run in hallways he could remember to be a little patient at his locker if someone else is in the way it takes only a moment it makes you feel good and it makes others want you around the last page reminds jerry that courtesy keeps us friends in our classrooms but there's no picture yet of course there are many pictures jerry could draw he could show how we work together courteously how we listen courteously how we greet visitors to a room taking turns as host and hottest yes there are many examples of courtesy in our classroom for jerry to choose from instead of watching to see what he does why don't you tell about one way courtesy helps in your classroom it will help you to remember how important courtesy is in school [Music] so um it looked like somebody who was drawing some of the uh illustrations of good courtesy had a like dennis the menace because there's a couple of dennis the menace looking kids with the cowlick and the denim overalls and all that uh so um this is a drawing from stephen i think yes uh skip get stuck in his new telecini um which is behind me um i don't want to get stuck in there there's not really any room for me but um there is an interesting there's some interesting stories i have a story here that uh i'll read eventually about getting stuck in a telecini um anyways uh so on the telecity it's actually a scanner but you know whatever uh i have a film set up statue of liberty let's watch and enjoy [Applause] [Music] today i gave my son a souvenir a very important keepsake the small model is much more than a toy there's a very special reason for getting this memento for my son it is almost as though i'm repaying a debt through this souvenir of the statue of liberty [Music] yes today is a pilgrimage a sentimental g [Music] to see again the lady with the torch that image of liberty one of the largest and most inspiring sculptures in all the world for it was here in new york harbor 33 years ago that i first saw the statue of liberty i was just a lad of seven an immigrant coming to the united states and like thousands of hopeful immigrants before and after i was thrilled by the sight of the great lady this goddess of liberty this symbol of freedom i told myself that someday i'd come back and visit the wonderful statue that welcomed me to the land of opportunity and land of opportunity it was for i kept so busy for 33 years growing up strong and healthy going to college to become a history teacher in this great country of ours that i never had time to make the pilgrimage back to the statue that is until today of course and now my son is with me the same age as when i first saw the great lady whose torch reaching more than 300 feet into the sky lights the way to liberty and freedom who proudly holds the tablet representing the declaration of independence emphasizing that all men are created equal at whose feet the shackles of tyranny are symbolically broken one must not forget that the most famous statue in history was once an immigrant herself as my son soon learns when we go inside with her tradition of freedom france had helped the united states to attain her independence in the revolutionary war a french writer eduardo lavalay suggested in 1865 that a monument be built in the united states a gift from the people of france to commemorate the birth of america's independence this statue of liberty enlightening the world commemorates the alliance of the two nations in achieving the independence of the united states of america and attests to their abiding friendship signed a goose buttholding sculptor it was this french artist who envisioned and made the first rough sketches of this famous creation as he came into new york harbor in 1872. bataldi designed and constructed the famous monument which was first built in france at the cost of a quarter of a million dollars then disassembled and shipped to the united states and finally erected on what was then known as bedlow's island on a granite pedestal financed by popular subscription of 225 thousand in the united states dedication came in 1886 110 years after america with the aid of france fought hard to win the prize of independence almost immediately this imposing statue became a symbol of freedom and hope to refugees from all the world the poet emma lazarus caught the spirit in these inspiring words give me your tired your core your huddled masses yearning to breathe free the wretched refuse of your teaming shore send these the homeless tempest tossed to me i lift my land beside the golden door now we're going to go up through the granite pedestal so we can go into the statue the elevator is taking us about 90 feet to the foot of the statue itself before we climb into the statue we read one of the inspiring statements the words of the eloquent world war one president woodrow wilson i would rather belong to a poor nation that was free than to a rich nation that had ceased to be in love with liberty yes and because of what we have seen today my son and i can more deeply appreciate the importance of liberty a guide of the national park service tells us that the statue is made of 100 tons of copper sheets as thin as a silver dollar which are riveted to an iron frame securely supported by steel columns and beams why is the statue green my son wants to know that's a patenter the guide explains caused by the oxidation of the copper in the moist air in her attractive green robe miss liberty stands 152 feet tall it is 305 feet from the ground to the tip of her flaming torch her handsome face is 10 feet across her strong arm is 42 feet long big yes indeed but as big as the statue of liberty is the concepts of liberty and democracy are even bigger and now to climb to the crown of liberty to see her proud view of america 168 winding steps will take us the 12 stories 110 feet to the crown as we climb tourists from our 50 states and from all over the world are coming to battery park at the tip of new york's manhattan island to get aboard the little white ferries which run on regular frequent schedules for the 20-minute trip through new york harbor to the island according to polls taken in new york city the statue of liberty is the number one attraction for visitors for many years holiday crowds sometimes run to more than ten thousand persons in number of visitors the statue rivals the tower of london and the eiffel tower even though those two sites can be reached without a ferry ride many faces many heritages many racial backgrounds but all americans the destination once known as bedlow's island is one of a group of tiny isles near the mouth of the hudson river an island which had a colorful 300-year history under many flags as a hospital a fort an ordnance depot in 1956 congress renamed it liberty island and here the 12 acres of the statue of liberty national monument are ably administered by the national park service of the united states department of the interior the home of the mohegan indians 300 years ago the island is still occasionally invaded by hostiles from high in liberty's crown my son and i can see the passengers coming to pay their respects to the great lady this is where we are high above new york's busy harbor and this is what we see from our perch in the sky the skyline of new york one of the world's largest cities in front of it the main channel through which past the great ships of the world the giant verrazano narrows bridge the largest single span suspension bridge in the world [Music] historic staten island guarded by forts hamilton and wadsworth acres and acres of tanks and refineries one of the largest oil refinery centers in the united states but eventually we must do it and allow others to view through liberty's eyes the land and sea gateways to america on our way to the boat we passed the administration building of the national park service whose smartly uniformed personnel are the guardians of miss liberty my son brings home more than a souvenir of liberty he has seen a great symbol of freedom and independence as a history teacher as his father i hope the statue will remain in his memory strengthen his efforts in the years ahead as a responsible citizen in our democratic land and when my son is safe in bed tonight protected not only by his family but also by a country and a way of life that are strong and free because of our liberty and great democratic traditions the statue will be alive with light her torch a sending out beams that surely reach the most distant corners of the earth [Music] beams of light beams of hope to all men everywhere who love freedom and liberty all right pretty great um so the lut the look up table i'd set up didn't work for that film it made everything yellow so i need to figure out what's going on with that but uh here's a here's a story that was uh made by stephen skibs adventure one day a man named skip was setting up his film on the telecini for his uh lunchtime streaming show while lasagna was cooking in the microwave he finished setting up his film when he heard the microwave beat because his lasagna was done he walked from his telecenter to the microwave and said ooga-booga as he was reaching for his the microwave door uh opening button as he pressed the button he vanished at the speed of light what happened was a very rare occurrence you see telecinis are highly complex machines with some magical properties i would say that's a true assessment uh since he had a telecinium microwave plugged into the same plug he and his lasagna were transported um into the film as soon as skip touched the microwave button skip was confused so the uh so he started gobbling down his lasagna of course uh he was inside a cornet film about table manners so the guy with the sweater came and started yelling at him to have better table manners um yeah the one with the cool coronet sweater uh that has the deer on it uh skip thought he was hallucinating from bad lasagna so he traveled into the next film which uh was his books are for burning song and he was terrified so he went to the next film which was skipper learns a lesson he interfered with the film so now skipper did not learn a lesson uh a thought came in sky to skip's head all of a sudden perhaps the musics were being li the films were being live streamed on his show when he as he was on the inside of them he thought if he played copyrighted music youtube would stop the film and he would get transported out of his computer screen he started playing some of the films with copyrighted music in them and youtube stopped the film wow that's the first time it's been actually useful he was then transported out of his computer screen and into his chair he tried telling his audiences his experiences on the inside of the film but he forgot to turn his microphone on so they heard nothing thank you stephen for encapsulating uh what i think is the um quintessential av geeks experience me being teleported to another place and then uh eating lasagna and then uh youtube stopping what i was doing thanks so much uh this film is called the departure enjoy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] so [Music] a beautiful sight isn't it son and as long as that ship is in your vision she's yours to command proudly you direct her course as part of a great tradition the merchant marine as part of a vast fleet sailing under a proud house flag 41 vessels over 70 000 miles of sea lanes more than 50 ports of call [Music] yes proudly you direct your course yours is a big job a big responsibility but sailing with you is a staff and crew experienced and dependable the finest in the merchant marine and the ship on which you sail boasts the finest most advanced of modern equipment the piercing electronic vision of radar technology's answer to foul weather [Music] the effortless constant propulsion generated by modern steam turbines at your command power to drive the great propellers that furrow the oceans of the world immediate communication at all times with ports and other ships a big job you bet but you earn it there are no shortcuts to becoming master of a ship just years of experience [Music] yes proudly you direct her course but now she's out of sight your voyage is over until another ship another day perhaps tomorrow [Music] [Applause] [Music] sailing on schedule this means a great deal to you as a businessman this dependability is part of your stock and trade but clockwise schedules are only one reason for your feeling of assurance [Music] you know your shipment is in experienced hands and sails with the finest most modern fleet carrying the commerce of the world but did you know that in years past most cargo moved in freighters slow ships with no special routes the word schedule did not exist a shipper's promise of delivery was at best a guess but seas and from the highest to the lowest to watch and labor with devotion for the safety of the property and the lives committed to their skill and fortitude through the hazards of innumerable voyages horizons are limitless and by now the hours are spent with many new friends amid luxurious surroundings as the great ship sails smoothly safely on the moment you arrive in manila you feel welcome a warm and friendly people the philippine citizens have emerged from conquest and war a free nation and a republic like our own they're proud of their country and want you to see it [Music] again you will see contrasts the old way of life the new but always never forgetting the past [Music] another british crown colony you'll visit is colorful singapore at the tip of the melee peninsula one of the most important ports of call on the train routes of the world [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the shops of singapore are famed for their lack of wear poison a [Music] ivory porcelain and jade [Music] penang farther up the melee peninsula is a principal port of call for the rubber and tin industries of malaya [Music] and then a visit to one of the large plantations where the rubber trees comparable venice the streets of venice are canals close to 200 of them flow into the grand canal [Music] the beautifully ornate cathedral of saint mark's is here dominating saint mark's square [Music] an example of the byzantine influence on venetian architecture with mosaics of solid gold inlay [Music] then in contrast to the quiet beauty of venice a trip to irrepressible paris capital of france to many the capital of the world arbiter of women's fashions producers so much of the world's art and literature lovely gay poor rich alive with living you'll long remember paris homeward bound it ended too early my mouth is full of uh of salad so i have this in place wow i'm chewing so this is uh sarah's uh rendition of watching this on youtube me and then there's a bunch of comments here
