can't get the webcam come up hold on all right hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show um I'm back and you can tell because of all the technical problems um yikes um had a really amazing time traveling with with Katrina we went to a lot of really awesome places it's all really amazing things and amazing people including some of you which was really great um I'm gonna try to switch over to the webcam again because this is annoying to the other webcam there we go a little bit better maybe now I'm yellowish anyhow we're back we're gonna get started with uh something on the uh the film scanner I saw I saw a bunch of film scanners uh on my trip I was itching to show you guys something live so this is a United Way campaign call and it's called they believe and there might be a song in this I don't know we'll see enjoy a scanner is not threaded right trying bear with me all right we're gonna watch uh Birds of Prey instead until I can figure this out all right enjoy during the day barn owls are throughout most of the United States they usually hunt their prey under cover of night the eyes of the barn owl unlike those of most birds are set so that it can look in Only One Direction without moving its head the barn owl has Keen eyes it can see mice or other prey at Great distances it's highly sensitive ears can hear the movements of a field mouse far away the wing feathers of an owl have a soft Fringe such Wings make no noise in flight thus the prey has no warning a baby born owl just hatched naked and quite helpless later a white down appears the mother barn owl starts sitting as soon as she lays the first egg the largest in this brood is 12 days older than the smallest baby born owls are always hungry when half grown the young still have the Downy white coat but later Wing feathers appear and also the head feathers here is the entire brood of seven again days later when six to eight barnung are ready to leave the nest the great horned owl is found in all parts of North and South America the year round the ear Tufts resemble horns hence the name great horned owl it is large powerful and ferocious it is often called the tiger of the air this great horned owl in Arizona has hatched its too young in an old abandoned hawk nest here in the Southwest the parents often catch rabbits to feed their young even at this age they are ever on the alert for dangers if a stranger approaches the young owl lowers and spreads its wings as if ready to attack the screech owl is found in all parts of the United States this one has a nest in a hollow fur tree its plumage matches the bark the baby Screech Owl has a coat of down when half grown It is Well feathered a less common owl the snowy owl nests near the Arctic Circle only during severe Winters do these owls go Southward as far as the United States and then usually only as far as the northern states the snowy owl is white except for dark markings the turkey vote scavenger feeding mainly on decaying flesh it is often seen circling high in the sky above a carcass the young turkey vulture has a white coat of down which is later replaced by black feathers during summer turkey vultures are found throughout most of the United States but they move Southward in winter the black vulture is found only in the southeastern United States and Southward the black vulture also is a scavenger the head and upper neck are bare young black vultures have coats of gray down but this will be replaced by black feathers when they are three months old the sparrow hawk is one of the smallest Hawks in Canada but many migrate to Southern United States and as far south as Central America in winter the sparrowhawk commonly nests in a hollow tree this sparrowhawk has just hatched feathers appear as it grows older but the brightly colored feathers do not appear until the second year the marsh Hawk usually nests among the Reeds and marshes throughout the northern and western parts of the United States and North to the Arctic Circle the winter home extends from the United States to South America during the nesting season the parents are busy providing food Marsh hawks live almost entirely on field mice the mother holds the mouse in her claws and with her beak tears the flesh the rough-legged hawk winter is almost entirely within the boundaries of the United States but in summer migrates northward to nest in Canada the rough-legged hawk sometimes nests on a high cliff a brood usually consists of three or four Young these young are nearly grown the parent Birds often bring rabbits or squirrels to the nest but when food is scarce they may attack other birds these young rough-legged Hawks are tearing apart the remains of a sparrow hawk a case of Hawk eat Hawk the red-tailed hawk is found in all parts of the United States [Music] in mountainous country the red-tailed hawk often nests on a high ledge the red-tailed hawk prays largely on small animals including snakes and fish two months after hatching these young Red Tails are nearly full grown and they are learning to fly okay now we're gonna try to watch they believe all right let's try it again during the day barn owls are throughout most of the United States no no no [Music] the Festival of Arts and Laguna Canyon have always been associated with the Better Life in Orange County I've been involved with that festival for a long time but let me tell you it's not all good life around our County I'm thurl Ravenscroft and today we're going to share some stories about what else goes on we want you to meet some people whose lives have been touched by the United Way there's Gloria McDonald Juan Sid Elaine Panos John Ramirez Harry bub and Jim Ellis just to name a few they believe I believe in the United Way system the way it's uh it's being run today I think it works well the allocations process is a very important process in the overall United Way effort they primarily fit in as a function to check and make sure that the funds are allocated properly to all the member agencies of United Way we need to find out whether or not those Human Services which are being delivered by the agency are in fact being delivered the portion under the special need for Clinica Jim Ellis full-time executive and part-time volunteer is that an increase over last year he heads one of 12 committees that decide where the money goes for Orange County's United Way their meeting is in progress Nika we have the responsibility to give some guidance to agencies even hold back funds where we feel that there might be a question as to the job that they might be doing in the community you'll be serving less people the 1981 it's not a question of just giving a normal increase each year to a particular agency but it's more a review process of the entire program of the respective agency it's very very hard to pinpoint and say boy this year I know we're going to do exactly these um a number of units of service and transportation or an escort or a nutrition volunteers are doing most the work they're not receiving any compensation so for the maximum dollars that someone is contributing to this organization we can put the maximum money back into the agencies one of the more than 85 year money helps to support I would say 95 to 98 of the population that we serve is Spanish-speaking only so it's really a Melting Pot of a lot of different Latin groups from all over the world he's energetic he's full of life he's really a moving forest in the center Amen to tell you the truth there are few places like abrazar one of the best programs that the Community Development Council of Orange County is set up is a doctor's office on wheels it's set up to do blood pressure testing flu vaccines you name it it's free of charge to the clients the only thing that people have to do is show up is a second home for us because we know so many friends not only friends Brothers people that care for one another like this we have one doctor over here once a month and the doctor is very nice person [Music] everybody's poor over here 90 cuatro take care and that's important the United Way is an integral part of abrazar when my parents moved out here a little over a year ago of course they had us to kind of guide them along and they have had to try and find their own way their own life but there was something missing and now they found it they've been rejuvenated [Music] they do the three or four mile walks every day they visit the Senior Citizen Center and the fact that they can associate with people that speak their language makes life a lot easier for them [Music] play Somebody's love [Music] where can you turn for help if someone in your family has cancer where can you go for help if your house burns down can you turn to if your marriage is falling apart what can you do to help fight heart disease where can you turn if you have a child with a speech or hearing defect [Music] where can you get help if you're a single parent the answers are all the same the United Way it's more than a charity it's a way of life our United Way provides the most comprehensive package of human care services available in Orange County so many there's a directory to know where to turn we're in this together the Stanton Athletic Club is one of the smaller United Way agencies [Applause] Ramirez is a member laborers union and he serves as the club boxing coach we started this to keep the kids off the street age coach at the average probably donates about 20 hours a week some of the kids that can't afford the fee or some that can't you know afford to buy shoes will you buy shoes one with the money that we receive from the United Way Daddy yeah the laborers union helps us out they do why they Club gloves and they let us use their ring three four times a year we have tournaments to raise money to buy equipment for the kids all the coach you have are volunteers who get involved sometimes if you have a problem that has something to do with the Box you know with school and this and that maybe you're left and right you left you're right Joy right there we're there to help it's rewarding it's well worth it to donate your time for kids I have two children a boy and a girl and my husband's in the Marine Corps and when I came on day shift I needed to find a babysitter that I could afford and with two kids there's not too many places that you can afford most people want to charge you 80 or 90 dollars a week and it doesn't really pay for you to work if you're gonna have to put out that much for babysitting finally I got a hold of an organization called Pride development and then the kids have been going there ever since every week Rockwell takes a deduction out of my paycheck which goes directly to the United Way my need is different than somebody else's they might need something else so if other people are supporting and they're helping my need why shouldn't I turn around and support the same thing and help somebody else with their needs [Applause] I can take them to school in the morning drop them off and then I'm free of worry for the rest of the day when they went camping and they were laying down to sleep one night and what y'all said Angelina tell me a story we need the day care centers because low-income families cannot afford babysitters same quality of Education or the same quality of whatever the daycare so the supplies for their children is the same as the upper income we have young people from the colleges to come in some of them are doing their student teaching and they volunteer their time to help tutor these children in the afternoons with times the way they are now it's hard for anybody to make ends meet it's hard to put a family through the United Way helps the daycare center who helps me and then in turn I work for Rockwell and they also support United Way many smaller agencies depend on United Way for their bare existence but the larger Health Care organizations count on your support even more an umbrella agency like United Way makes certain everyone gets their fair share the American Red Cross the American Cancer Society the American Heart Association they all rely on United Way and so does the United Cerebral Palsy Association this year's General campaign chairman Harry bub found out just how much those funds help when he visited UCP [Music] our needs are certainly far greater than we've demonstrated an ability to meet although we've been making good progress in Orange County we are in no way immune from the problems of our entire state in society whether that's alcoholism child abuse or any one or the other ah come on Russ that's good regardless of both the physical and the mental disabilities they're not giving up they're making an effort however simple and however basic to achieve yeah let's be careful you don't want to get that on the table you've done such a great job there we go how's that all right I believe United Way is absolutely indispensable that's critical hey I like that I like that ending Rusty that's great yes okay [Music] I don't know what we might do to more effectively give individuals the same experience that we had here today you can attempt that through film television but I don't believe there ever can or will be a substitute for actually going through that yourself please [Applause] foreign [Music] wow thorough Ravenscroft uh amazing um he of course said the voice for Tony the Tiger he sang the song You're a Mean One Mr Grinch he was in I can't remember the name of the singing group that he was in but he did a bunch of stuff for Disney um and uh he did a version of the Kermit the frogs It's Not Easy Being Green which is really kind of interesting um wow but Orange County yikes uh during that time kind of rough but uh some great punk rock came out of there so there you go uh let's watch uh about the relief of pain with some catchy uh intro music enjoy [Music] at sebogage research scientists create products which enrich the quality of Our Lives products to increase our food supply dyes and pigments which surround us with color Pharmaceuticals to improve our health which reaffirmed the value of science to mankind it's part of its Contin ued support of Science Education seba Geiger is pleased to present tissue of the science screen report [Music] screen report developments in science engineering and medicine that help solve the problems of modern life foreign a sensation everyone experiences but no one fully understands currently at least one person in 10 suffers from chronic pain arthritis migraine headache mental pain lower back pain and other types today pain is a major area of intense scientific research this is a report on new advances in this field of study science versus pain [Music] in some early societies individuals were conditioned to accept pain by enduring stinging ants these children were prepared for life's discomforts foreign [Music] other cultures develop special disciplines for dealing with pain [Music] techniques that researchers are still investigating today [Music] two thousand years ago the Greek philosopher Aristotle discouraged the study of pain for him pain was not a sensation but an intense emotion the opposite of pleasure in the Middle Ages physical pain was often depicted as deserved suffering or punishment the reason for pain was a moral matter not a mystery for science to solve by the 1800s Physicians had begun to use ether and nitrous oxide to relieve pain in dentistry and surgery such anesthesia remains a major Triumph of medicine at the same time doctors began to find medications from aspirin to Morphine to control pain ideally they combined great potency with minimal abuse potential and side effects to better understand pain doctors Patrick Wall of MIT and Ronald melzak of McGill University proposed the gate control pain Theory much simplified the gate control pain theory states that millions of sense receptors throughout the body send data on temperature and other conditions to the brain receptors and brain are linked via an intricate nerve Network the network converges on the spinal cord where a gate control is thought to exist this gate usually stays shut and drugs can close it blocking pain signals but when it opens the signals register in the brain as pain Sensations pain gate theorist melzak comments we are now beginning to understand how complicated pain mechanisms actually are there are opportunities for pain signals to be modified and modulated in the course of their transmission from some damaged part of the body to the brain where pain is perceived for instance when stimulated once of nerve cells or neurons is known to deliver a quick burst of pain signals causing the person to react before damage becomes too great while microseconds later a second separate set of neurons delivers additional pain signals causing a dull ache which leads the person to care for the injured part and perhaps to learn to avoid re-injury in the future [Music] hmm sponsors are also known to be affected by what the organism is doing at the time sleeping or grooming feedings mating fighting each evokes a particular reaction to the pain stimulus she'll be working together the gate control theory is applied to help surgical patients by being told the types of pain to expect and the medications to be used the patients can better mobilize their own body's resources and I want to stress you that pain in this setting is normal that we will be taking care of you to lessen the problem primarily we will be giving you for your anxiousness pre-operatively a tranquilizer after surgery explanations and support also help shut the pain gate thus to some extent the gate is under the pace conscious control is it better than it was a team it's imperative that you get a hold of me right away the worst thing you can do is to delay much research today is concerned with individuals who suffer chronic pain either as a distinct malady itself or due to other health problems such chronic pain has no useful function but only produces stress anxiety sleep problems depression [Music] one answer is the pain clinic a team of health professionals each applying particular Therapies unfortunately neither surgery nor long-term medication may be sufficient Instead The Chronic pain may continue month after month foreign biofeedback pain control is one recent pain clinic treatment the electrodes taped to this woman's fingers pick up my new changes in skin resistance which may vary with the level of pain so the monitor's sound signal indicates the Pain's intensity [Music] somehow the patient then learns to mentally control the signal to go with it and so learns to reduce the pain itself in a sense biofeedback pain control is a scientific form of the Indian yoga's self-discipline besides biofeedback hypnosis and meditation have shown limited but useful results in pain control [Music] recently experts at the University of Aberdeen and Johns Hopkins University made a major discovery that further explains the ancient mystery of pain the discovery the brains billions of neurons employ chemicals called neurotransmitters to place messages in particular sites called receptor neurons the body's sense receptors and medications carried by The Blood also act at these specific sites one such brain chemical called encephalin known to relieve pain and produce Euphoria originates near the spinal cord [Music] another found in the brain itself at 200 times as powerful as morphine is called beta endorphins [Music] both are parts of the pituitary hormone called beta lipotropin a person's sensitivity to pain is thought to depend on the body's ability to produce these chemicals the brain chemicals act in receptor neurons at the base of the brain when pain signals begin to arrive shown in red the brain chemicals shown in green are released and plug into the receptor neurons blocking them as a result the next pain signals may cause only greatly reduced pain Sensations this laboratory research film courteous of Dr Terry Olson is evidence for the existence of the brain chemicals the red light at lower right signals a mild electric stimulus given the monkey's tooth a man-made toothache so the monkey hits a lever that turns off the tooth stimulus now a mild brain stimulus indicated by the white light is given via the cables to produce quantities of brain chemicals a second man-made toothache note the light at lower right is applied but this time the monkey is indifferent rain chemicals now block the receptor sites and the monkey appears to feel no pain more knowledge about the brain chemicals was gathered by Dr Bruce parents sponsored by the national research Council of Canada his studies dealt with the Oriental Healing Art called acupuncture [Music] Dr pomerantz found that acupuncture doesn't work on Just Animals lacking these brain chemical sites or lacking the critical chemicals themselves he proposes that acupuncture works by stimulating production of the brain chemicals if so acupuncture has been given a scientific basis which may lead to its becoming a more effective medical tool the newly found brain chemicals may also clarify the operation of electronic nerve stimulators under pain management technique one Theory holds that such devices stimulate the body's own production of anti-pain brain chemicals acting as a sort of pain control pacemaker a typical nerve stimulator produces current pulses lasting 50 to 250 microseconds too brief to be themselves painful stimulator and battery pack weigh a quarter of a kilogram described only by physicians they must be used with follow-on Health Care programs not all cases respond but the devices are helping significant numbers of pain sufferers [Music] permanently implanted stimulators are another new answer here a surgeon positions the electrode and adjusts the stimulus level until the pain decreases again this approach is effective only with some patients [Music] for almost all of human history people have had to accept pain as their fate in life today such advances as pain gate control theory pain clinics biofeedback pain control the new science of brain chemistry and pain control nerve stimulators offer New Hope one current project is studying and synthesizing brain chemicals a step towards new pain control medications other work focuses on their possible role in drug addiction mental illness and other Behavior some experts believe that ultimately the study of brain chemicals will reveal that what we call thoughts and feelings are immensely complex electrochemical reactions in the brain as always in science and medicine the challenge is not simply to unravel old or new Mysteries but to apply what has been learned with skill Vigor and compassion science screen report has been presented by synagogi's Creston Rhode Island plant producers of more than 100 chemical products including Optical brighteners for detergents and pharmaceutical active ingredients [Music] sorry about the monkey test footage inside of a children's board there are many Wards of this kind in hospitals throughout the country these youngsters are victims of home accidents Burns a fall poison lacerations eye injury most of the accidents occurred between the hours of 4 and 6 pm to children ages one to five every one of these accidents could have been prevented let's examine some accident facts and the circumstances leading to the near fatal mishap of one of these youngsters two-year-old Richard Danbury [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] at the Children's Hospital in Boston a research group recently completed a year study of its serious accident cases the findings revealed a set of emotion charge circumstances which set the stage for an accident [Music] most accidents were traceable too simple everyday occurrences heading this study was Dr Robert J Hagerty now chief of pediatrics at the Strong Memorial Hospital University of Rochester you know parents can do a great deal to prevent accidents we as doctors can immunize your child against a lot of diseases like polio tetanus diphtheria things that used to be such a problem to children but only you as parents can immunize your children against accidents which are the greatest cause of death and trouble with children today now let's look back at Richard and see what some of the causes of his accident were and how they could have been prevented the day got off to a bad start the family alarm clock was a half hour slow it put Bill behind in the schedule [Music] look I've got to get out of here I've got to be at the office at nine o'clock but you have to have some breakfast I don't have time oh all right pour me a cup of coffee that's all I have time for Phil you'll have to forget the coffee there isn't any make it juice that'll be okay [Music] there's just enough juice for the kids how about some milk well I'll get something to eat when I get downtown [Music] no [Music] bro have you seen those papers I was working on last night they have to be here somewhere the children haven't been in here and you left them here well I've got to have them at the office oh my God I'll get along without them you're never gonna find anything in this house [Music] you gotta get those pills finished today oh we'll never get away on vacation all right bill I'll try and get them done today [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah okay put it in your pocket ready go out and tell the bus driver we're coming careful crossing the street had a good time foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] why did you do that for Ruth had no time to sympathize with Richard [Music] there were clothes to be checked and packed for their vacation trip bills to be paid and the house to be tidied before her mother-in-law a spotless housekeeper arrived for a visit foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Ruth was so busy that she forgot about Richard's nap [Applause] he was so tired that he balked at letting granny hold him by the time granny left Ruth was behind in her dinner preparation and her tension was mounting [Music] is that you Belle yeah did I ready almost oh it's kind of late isn't it well it's just been one of those days and everything's gone wrong got those bills paid yet [Music] okay all right now here take your cookies take your things off and go in and watch television hurry up bro where are the towels I'm in the shower [Music] Richard what have you done Bill call the doctor Richard Danbury was the unfortunate victim of Dr Haggerty answers this and other questions on how to make the home a safe place for children in the study that we conducted at the Children's Hospital in Boston we found that most accidents could be prevented if parents would observe the eight danger signals now let's take a look at these this is danger Situation Number One the hungry child the most dangerous time is the hour just before supper at that time small children are tired and hungry and they will eat anything even if it's a poison what to do well try and forget the clock feed the child even if it makes dinner for the older people wait a bit the second cause fatigue is almost as dangerous as hunger in three quarters of all accident cases of young children the children involved are either hungry tired or both forget exact Knack times when a child is obviously tired or when you when you're ill pregnant or it's just one of those days you can't be as watchful as usual you just don't have the energy on those days try doing just the things that are absolutely necessary another high accident time is when your family is vacation bound children are excited and this excitement can lead to accidents be especially careful at these times if you go out leave your child in the care of a reliable babysitter who knows your child's ways and who really cares for him too many parents have returned home only to find that the babysitter underestimated what their child could do or did not pay enough attention the problem our study found that accidents often occur in families when the parents argue with one another especially when the children are around children have a way of knowing when their parents aren't getting along and it bothers them and it's at times like this that accidents occur next is the overactive child particularly the toddler and the two and three-year-olds to keep him in one piece requires constant supervision and finally another cause of accidents is failure of parents to recognize the developmental stage that their child is at children grow and develop very rapidly and it's hard for all of us as parents to realize that our little two-year-old has grown up to the point where he can climb up and get into the medicine cabinet and get at those poisons probably warnings such as don't do this and don't do that won't help very much but they may at times even trigger off an accident what I think is important is that we recognize that these accidents occur at the time when things are going wrong in the family if we take things a little easier at these times this will prevent accidents only in this way can we prevent what happened to Richard let's make this accident the exception rather than the rule [Music] thank you for uh Tide Pods that look like candy kids were just eating anything as we know um now that was a great film I uh I hadn't actually seen that surprisingly uh even though that was one of the first uh I would say that's in that first batch of 500 films that we got um and just kind of got lost in the mix uh anyways thank you Triangle but also you know try to figure out ways to come to your town um if you live in a major metropolitan area or at least an area that is interesting uh or that might host us um but no it was really phenomenal and so I really appreciate being able to do this with you guys uh remotely but I also appreciate that one-on-one kind of feel um to hear you gasp and giggle and chuckle and nervously laugh uh in that show that I did on tour was the uh now I know why you're scared which was a lot of really intense uh trigger warning stuff that was shown to kids that probably should not have been shown to kids um it was over the top and in the last screening we did in uh Los Angeles there was a 10 year old in the audience so I kind of followed up with him afterwards and talked to him and his
