[Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] just about every college in most high schools new movies for coaching football movies have been one of the most effective coaching tools ever developed every move every strategic play can be recorded and then analyzed later but while football has been proving the value of film analysis nearly every other sport has been left out in the cold and you know this is strange because analytical movies can be just as valuable to any other sport as they are to football movies can in fact help any coach to improve all athletic performances movies can show a team how to work as a team can pinpoint plays that come off just right and those that go wrong slow motion studies can help develop coordination improve balance and timing and can show up the kinks that happened so fast that they can't be detected by any other means all the advantages that movies give to football our just as applicable to every other sport perhaps there have been pretty good reasons for those other sports being left out in the cold sometimes movies haven't been too practical from a budget point of view and then too they usually required a certain amount of photographic skill to get usable pictures but those problems are over now let me show you the new movie system that Kodak has come up with a system that's just right for all sports we've dubbed it the super 8 sports analysis team it's a complete system a coaches camera coaches film and the coaches projector together an automated system each component has been designed to take all of the fuss and complications out of moviemaking with this equipment in your athletic department each one of your coaches can benefit from movies of his sport because this moviemaking system is foolproof is economical and it pays off in results you've undoubtedly heard about super 8 the dramatically improved 8 millimeter film format pioneered by kodak super 8 is a real improvement it gives you all the backwards and forwards for critical reviews or freeze the key part of the action you can project your film just as it was shot or use the high-speed control to race through the footage to the next particular shot you want to review [Music] now we've been preoccupied with details the last few minutes so let's stop and reconsider what we're really trying to accomplish that is to provide every coach of every sport with a tool to help his boys reach their top potential improve their individual performances gain maximum rewards from the time and energy invested in athletic programs every one of us who has used sports film knows for a fact that when a boy sees himself on the screen he has an insight and understanding that can be gained in no other way film doesn't lie it never forgets but it does leave an accurate lasting impression [Music] one side light when this picture you're looking at was being made the cameraman was besieged by the boys to see the results if we needed any proof of the value of these pictures the concentration with which they were received and the impression they made furnished it now before we wind up let me toss in one or two tips for your cameraman for games floor or ground shots can be dramatic but to see all the action and all the play on both sides get your man up high if possible give him plenty of working room so he can follow the action freely if he's jammed in somewhere the crowd is bound to get in his way particularly if the going gets exciting again here's a quick kick from the ground nice shot of the picker but that's about all here's the same kick in slow motion and from a high angle you see every man every assignment and you see how the play turned out for football basketball soccer and similar games the best general rule is to set your zoom lens for a picture just big enough to catch every significant man in the play and no more for individual performances keep in tight and slow of the faster actions down with your speed controller with the foolproof codec sports analysis team these few tips and a little experience any student or faculty member can get shots like this every time [Music] so I guess that's about all I have to say for today but my one last word to every coach who wants his boys to live up to their full potential in what coach doesn't analyze your sport with film [Music] you you sorry I was trying to adjust the light here not very spotlight II not very conducive to video sorry you figure this is like week nine right you think I figured all this out but everything sometimes something changes like I have to move a piece of furniture whatever anyways I'm skip I was Homer Bailey geeks we collect old 16-millimeter educational films and show them to folks like you and we've been doing this for I don't know 25 years ish or so the the fact that we are doing it from the basement of my house and doing it from the internet is something that we just started doing 9 weeks ago so thank you for joining us and I'll try to keep what we're showing palatable yeah that last film codec advertisement for how great their products are for capturing sports footage and a lot of people noticed it's all about boys because this is before title 9 before funding was actually going and encouraging and mandating women's girls sports so that was part of that super 8 was relatively new when this came out and it was certainly something that Kodak was pushing more and more I have a small portion of sports films that were shot mostly football mostly high school football and they're shot up high and they're really literally for coaches to watch and to show his team and they would show it back on a analyst projector that would run slow and sometimes would you could you'd have a little remote and you could advance it a frame at a time or reverse at a frame at a time analyst projectors are really are really awesome but man if you don't thread them right it will shred a film that was my experience with the analysts that I had that eventually just fell apart anyways yeah sports I mean there's lots of stuff captured by I got from a diversity in New York a bunch of sports films that they had on 16 that they had already digitized there's like here we're just gonna toss these you can have them and so there's a variety of different things you know there's traditional baseball basketball football but then there's wrestling and then there's crew and all this stuff lacrosse you name it sports um the next film is a science film it's really kind of cool so this is a million-to-one enjoy you need it splits this is a hollow metal can the rubber stopper and we filled that can with dry ice that is solid carbon dioxide now you know solid carbon dioxide is very cold this white stuff is just frost that's gathered on the outside of the can now as the can absorbs heat from the room the carbon dioxide evaporates and turns into a gas the gas takes up more room than the solid so it has to go somewhere can't come out the top so it comes out a little hole here in the bottom of the dish now you can't see it coming out the hole but if I make a flame I think you can see that there's gas coming out and blowing the flame now if we put the disc with its stream of gas coming out at the bottom down on our table top which is made of a very smooth piece of plate glass we can wait a moment while the gas coming out builds up pressure underneath which it has to do in order to escape by now of the disc is floating on this film of escaping gas that film is so thin that I'm sure you can't see it from out there I can scarcely see that thick see a space between disc and the glass myself but if you'll come and look over my shoulder I think I can show you that there is a space by slipping underneath the disc this piece of tinfoil I took off the chewing gum wrapper now will slip the tinfoil between the disc and the plate glass top of the table showing that there is indeed a space a thin film of gas between the disc and the glass upon which its rest the purpose of this is simply to reduce the friction to a point where we won't have to worry about it or measure it in our experiments today it's fun to play with this thing let me show you I'll give it a little push just a little one and there it goes moving sedately no sign is slowing up come on back same thing the other direction it takes only a very tiny force to start it in motion let me show you that [Music] [Applause] [Music] you so just that little musical interlude there might have knocked out some of Facebook people I'm sending a message but Wow a flea circus I love this is one of the reasons I love collecting films is to see this little cultural thing I don't know where that was I don't know if that was like in Times Square area or you know where it was but you know to see that neon for the flea circus and you know it how it got pushed to the back and there's all these arcade games up front is really just phenomenal so there you go science love it um speaking of science and the dangers that technology can bring us it's not just fleas you know giving fleas the ability to carry heavy books eventually giving them weapons to fight I feel like that jump I made haha here's another example of a wonderful useful technology and how it could go horribly awry this is conveyor belts be careful [Music] modern transportation systems on land [Music] sea and in the air are vital to our way of life to move people commodities and materials in this jet-propelled age people are in a hurry with an urge to go places quickly they become impatient rightly or wrongly they demand the right-of-way frequently losing sight of the hazards of haste and taking shortcuts modern transportation systems are in use throughout the mineral industry in both underground and surface mining they are essential for moving mine products workmen and supplies to fit the fast tempo of mechanized mining belt conveyors like all other forms of transportation have specific hazards for which safeguards must be developed to avoid personal injuries equipment breakdown and loss of production [Music] belt conveyors are not a recent innovation they have been used many years for all sorts of industrial applications in mine transportation belts have been used for more than a quarter century their use has been stepped up in recent years because they offer continuous rapid transportation for the flow of products [Music] belt conveyors present hazards inherent and man-made their wider use under new conditions has been accompanied by an increase in the number of moving parts such as reduction gears rollers and idlers [Music] drives and pulleys around which conveyor men must work the greater number of moving parts not only increases maintenance requirements but also increases the chance for accidents usually an accident happens when it is least expected injuring someone who least expects it like this workman for instance [Music] with the belt running mic was cleaning up around the Beltline when he noticed that a roller was sticking he tried to correct the situation using a screwdriver [Music] investigations reveal that one-fourth of conveyor belt accidents occur at the head pulley and troughing idler to reduce such accidents hazardous areas must be effectively guarded lighting installed to permit visual inspection without entering the guarded area and bright painted signs should be posted where needed a common belt installation is one for transporting or from a dumping point to the main haulage road where it discharges into cars for transportation to the surface one of the most dangerous practices around a conveyor belt is to take a shortcut over it while the belt is in motion guarded crossovers are usually provided at points where it is necessary to cross over moving belts but workmen don't always use them in addition a bell control line by which stop switches can be activated should be provided along the entire length of the belt [Music] when workmen decide to take a shortcut over a moving belt rather than walk to a crossover they invite trouble his buddy hurries to pull the stop line but it's too late there are three steps necessary to discourage the unsafe practice of workmen taking shortcuts over moving conveyor belts first a survey should be made of the places where men ordinarily crossed the belt lines [Music] second crossovers should be installed at these places and third we should insist that only the crossovers be used here is another conveyor belt accident the foreman instructed Tom a conveyor man to clean up the spillage around the drive motor and mechanism at the drive pulley Tom noticed some spillage inside the guarded area so he attempted to reach inside the guardrails with his shovel [Music] 84% of conveyor belt accidents occur during cleanup operations in order to reduce accidents of this type much care and forethought are required sometimes a basic hazards are overlooked a conveyor man may forget that a moving belt is dangerous but if all gears fittings shaft ends couplings and guards are installed the necessary work may be performed in the vicinity with little possibility of personal injury another common type of accident occurred when three conveyor men were repairing a splice on the tailings load-out belt [Applause] the belt on which repairs were being made was 18 feet above the ground two of the men were on the belt the other was on the walkway alongside the belt a small refuse belt line was in operation but it became necessary to stop it when a chute feeding into it became flood [Music] after the chute was cleaned an employee unfamiliar with the conveyor system was sent to start the refuse belt he mistakenly started the main belt line instead one workman was safe but the others suffered severe multiple injuries accidental starting of machinery under repair can be prevented by providing maintenance men with safety locks to lockout control switches this procedure should be strictly enforced accidents happen when least expected an investigations reveal that they occur with a higher frequency when work is being done in a hurry by someone like Clarence who today arrived at work 15 minutes late [Music] he did not report to his supervisor but proceeded to his routine work of checking and cleaning around the belt and pulleys he was seen doing this cleanup work shortly after he arrived using a long bar with a steel plate attached to one end when he observed built-up material on the tail pulley he used the bar to clean around it the bar became entangled he stumbled and fell and was pulled into the space between the tail pulleys and shaft ends the direct cause of the accident was carelessness the failure to stop and lock out the belt before attempting to remove adhering material from the pulley conveyor belt fires especially in underground installations greatly endanger life and property numerous belt fires have broken out during off shift periods after belts have been shut down a common source of conveyor belt fires is heat developed from electrical defects in the driving mechanism which is transmitted to the belt also heat from friction can develop that drive or tail pulleys and at frozen trough or return idlers one started a fire involving a clam about belt usually spreads rapidly the combustion produces high temperature and dense highly toxic smoke to combat conveyor belt fires workman's should be trained in firefighting and the use of proper fire extinguishers [Music] fire extinguishers should be maintained in good working condition and should be available at convenient locations [Music] frictional heat is also caused by belt slippage due to faulty belt tension foreign particles and overloading the belt frictional heat developed at the drive pulleys tail police and at frozen trough or return idlers is often caused by worn-out bearings or lack of lubrication frictional heat may develop at any place along a moving belt where it rubs against a stall part or obstruction this can be overcome by having control switches and the driving motor installation that will automatically stop the motor when the belt slows down slips or stops to prevent belt fires all belts should be fire resistant and the entire belt system carefully aligned to prevent electrical breakdowns and overheating the importance of first-class electrical installation including properly rated switches circuit breakers resistors and conductors cannot be emphasized too strongly when two or more belts are in series automatic means is necessary to start and stop the belts in proper sequence [Music] all moving rollers and idlers should be inspected frequently and lubricated to minimize the occurrence of frozen are stuck parts to eliminate spillage certain mechanical aids must be installed around hazardous areas feeders must be so designed to evenly distribute the load across the belt [Music] skirt board should be placed to prevent side spill at discharge points special containers can be installed to catch dirt cleaned off pulleys by scrapers and effective wipers that clean belt should be placed so that workmen cannot clean them while the belt is operating [Music] extended grease fittings and other mechanical aid should be installed so that work can be performed from a safe distance and not as shown here maintenance and repair men should be provided with safety locks for the purpose of locking out main control switches while repair is being performed [Music] safety rules should be posted conspicuously and employees instructed to obey them a positive approach on the part of workmen and management is necessary if conveyor belt accidents are to be reduced safety minded management can work out solutions to new or hazardous problems safety conscious supervisors can translate the solutions into action and safety minded employees can perform the work according to plan safely supervisors must provide leadership and by good example encourage safe belt operation they must also caution workmen frequently about the hazards the crux of an effective belt safety program is keeping the workmen alert and willing to do his part to prevent injury to himself and to others [Music] you um everything you wanted to know about conveyor belts but we're afraid to ask some amazing lingo being thrown out there and man definitely some danger there are some Widowmaker types of situations totally around and worst of all he's such a show-off he's a loudmouth clown and then there's Laurie you can't tell what she's thinking but she thinks nothing of cheating she tries to get away with everything good look at yourself in the mirror [Music] [Applause] anteye clown film think clowns have their purpose in society and somebody pointed out that see even this film doesn't like clowns well there's a difference between not liking clowns and being terrified of clowns I don't know where I really sit on the clown political spectrum but clowns man all right so this next film is actually made by a North Carolina filmmaker this guy Walter J Klein was is based I don't know if he's still with us we did a retrospective his stuff in Raleigh he showed up and he was I think he was in his 80s anyways he had an ad agency in the 50s and then started making sponsored films films that were basically paid for by somebody to sponsor to advertise whatever but as some of the key things he worked on he helped do the ad campaign for south-of-the-border Texas Pete chimney rock and some other key North Carolina businesses and so the deal with this and what I learned he wrote a book called the sponsored film but I also we learned during the qat is that he would come up with a script or his team would come up with a script then they would shop it around to different companies to see if they wanted to sponsor it and they would say this is how much it's gonna cost we will make these this many films and we will distribute them to schools or we will distribute them to TV stations and this would be free programming for a TV station and there would be an ad at the beginning and at the end and maybe a product placement in there somewhere I'm gonna sneeze excuse me pollen so anyways almost all his film have some sort of sponsorship at the beginning and at the end and sometimes a sponsorship has something to do with what the film is about sometimes it's just out of the blue so this next film is called the big yellow fellow and it is wacky and it was filmed in Charlotte North Carolina and let's see who sponsored it enjoy the makers of charms pops have helped make this film for you it's our come home and say mommy daddy look what I brought home a snapping turtle not Jackie he brought home his school bus a great big yellow fellow other parents might have been shaken not Bethan high school bus Jackie nobody brings home a school bus for us boy just follow me home well your mother's trying to find the rightful owner I mean where would we keep it how can I afford another engine to feed no luck nobody's lost a school bus how did anybody lose a school bus and not realizing I mean it's just too big Oh yellow know what notice can I keep it dad and may i sir may I keep it sure you can I love you Wow wait until the other kids hear about their judges I never had felt like this before dad well I guess you can keep the big yellow fella son you promised to learn all there is to know about the care feeding and kind treatment of school buses I promise but who will teach me well well your mother I get to keep you big yellow saw all sorts of things you have to know about school that's the Sun hold it some of the things you need to know have to do with what happens before you get on like making sure you're on time for your bus in the morning when you're going to school the big yellow fellow hate to be late so give yourself plenty of time to get up get dressed and have breakfast if you have to walk along the road to your bus stop remain on the left side of the road facing the traffic and stay on the sidewalk or paths while you're waiting for your bus stay off the street the street is much too dangerous a place for you to wait we don't want your hurt okay now I'm on the left side of the street but here comes my big yellow fellow on the right side that is a problem we'll have to cross the street now let's make sure that we look both ways before crossing all clear has the best really stopped good question be certain that it has and be sure that all the traffic is stopped great let's go that's a pretty big best dad should I go and find it behind it or under it in front always and make sure that the driver can see you oh and if you drop anything underneath or in front of the bus tell the driver before you get it Hey look who's driving today mom watch your step and use the handrail when you get on and off the bus Jackie you don't want to fire flip Hey if mom can drive the bus I guess anyone can hold it young man not just anyone can be a professional school bus driver it takes many hours of driver training physical examination and first day of study around the wheel [Music] your school bus driver wants to get you from home to school and back safely you want your driver to pay attention to the driving a rocking little fellow like me do you have big people like you drive a bus huh hey hey you mom don't talk so loud that you're disturbed the bus driver it's especially important to be quiet at railroad crossings so the driver can hear the train is near then when may I talk to my drivers saying good morning is a nice way to start when you leave the bus tell the driver if you've seen any damage to the bus anything torn or broken or if there's anything left behind if you want to open a window on the bus be sure to ask the driver for permission oh no problem what's that well what if the little fellow like me riding a big yellow fellow like this need to talk to someone and the drivers busy sometimes there are special people on the bus ready to help your dad is here to tell you a little bit more about riding a school bus we want to make sure you stay safe on the bus Jackie remember keep your head hands and arms inside the bus you could injure yourself very seriously if they're outside you kids be quiet sit down get your heads and arms back inside that bus you know there's something else that should stay inside the bus and that's anything you'll bring on board don't throw things out the windows but maybe I'll see a friend of mine and I'll have a piece of drum I want him to have so I'll just toss it to him no throwing any kind of object after the bus window can be very dangerous and as always against school rules when you have trash save it until you leave the bus and take it to a wastebasket and don't throw things at the bus either a snowball or a rock isn't funny if the driver is distracted and loses control the lives of many children including you Jackie are in the drivers hands so drop the snowballs and rocks and don't bring any snow sticky things loose foods or anything else that could spill melt or stick to the seats or floor maybe if I'm not a fireman astronaut or president of the ice date nights odd to be a school bus driver an honorable profession I assure you but don't forget drivers have important responsibilities accidents can happen on the bus should be a first aid kit fire extinguisher flags and reflective [Music] practice drill should be held by the school to help children know the best way to leave a bus in case of trouble the driver will usually be the last person off the bus to see that no one is left behind well I guess I know everything now right big yellow and I will get along just fun it might be true Jackie if you were the only passenger Joey Millie Billy and Lily Fran and Jen and red and Ed all of you riding with me lots of children ride the big yellow fellow that's why we have rules to keep everyone safe and happy don't bring real big things on the bus there might not be room on the bus for you if you have very large objects and someone to drive you to school keep the best I have credible objects we don't want anyone to fall on the way to a seat keep your books and legs out of the aisle we want to keep the aisle clear in case of emergencies also boys and girls should always stay behind these bars don't try to do your homework on the bus you may hurt yourself in somebody else with pens and pencils when you're on the bus X if you're in the classroom sit quietly and don't misbehave save new seat until the bus comes to a complete stop and if somebody does misbehave and doesn't follow the rules talk to the driver later [Music] you know just as there are rules for getting on the big yellow fella there are some things to do when you get on that's it use the handrail again and watch your step when you get off walk away from the buck about ten steps ahead of it along the edge of the road stay in sight of the driver so he knows just where you are at all times yes sure is a lot of think about just to get it right in the skull the most important things are to treat others thoughtfully sit quietly and listen to your driver well having a big yellow of my own seems unfair I mean some children might not even get in school because of me [Music] are you naughty but how many times now if you've done this to me Nick time I'll take away your key by the week this bus belongs to you sir indeed it does my card sir poppers pedigree picking these puppies I'm glad you said it I never could get it all out I've run on a beach in school and these are my students well sir my son Jackie's become quite attached to your bus we're all gonna miss it the lad recovered today I know he'll miss it same if he got a pet an animal of his own exactly well he once had a spider bold in itself yeah and now remember Jackie enjoy him take care of him take him on your real school bus home and thank you for taking care of my big [Music] [Music] dad and you and mom teach me how to take care of my dog the way you showed me about the school bus you bet we can Jackie you know taking care of a little life like this can be almost as much work as taking care of all the lives was a Walter J Klein film it was actually written by Richard a Klein who was Walters son who I met and there's there are some wacky films that they did in the 70s and 80s but also did some really fascinating advertising films in the 60s I'm hoping to work he climb donated all his films to the North Carolina School of the Arts or University of the Arts in winston-salem and the plan was before covin was we were gonna go and pick up a bunch of films that Klein had done and we were going to scan them but things didn't work out so this will probably be in the fall that we'll start doing that we did already scan the stuff that we do have in our collection and we have quite a few Kleinfelds in our collection some of them are safety films some of them are general information films dental
