so so hi everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh where we watch old 16 millimeter films and we just watched a film about a uh raccoon that was probably made in the 30s maybe even the late 20s um and it was from the mogul brothers collection which was a film library in new york and then it made its way to the oregon archive where um we scanned it for them and so yeah there's that um so last night we had the toe tapping tournament versus uh found footage festival and it was it was pretty rough a lot of good songs went down i am not going to say who won um uh but uh we're gonna they're gonna premiere it may 20th which is not this friday which i was hoping but next friday so they can promote it um they don't do daily shows like me so um anyways it was it was rough i there was there was i think we had because of your votes we had very strong candidates but uh they some of them the songs fell and it was it doesn't really make sense to me why they fell so anyways i'm not going to dwell on okay so let's do things that we can control uh let's see so i did a test earlier today on youtube because i got a copyright strike uh thanks to the mr wizard incorporated people who took down a film that i believe is in public domain and i have to now research uh and look at the this big book which is a uh the copy catalog of copyright entries to see if it was copyrighted and then to see if if the copyright number if it's been renewed anyways i've had i've gotten copyright strikes in the past which i have cleared by reaching out to the entities that gave me that copyright strike and in all cases they were strikes that were not deserved they were uh they did not understand how copyright worked and then i had to explain it to them which just bums me out that i have to do all this work when uh what i've done is not breaking any laws what what a day uh okay anyways you didn't you didn't come here to see me blather on uh let's uh wake up with the circus enjoy [Music] um [Music] it's early in the morning the circus is just waking up let's go along and watch we don't need any tickets now but we must be we'll get it going in a second what fishing what is performers jumbo and daisy get a fresh pail of water instead of orange juice hmm are they thirsty the pony gets a haircut and so does his trainer everybody's cleaning up look jumbo's getting a shower [Music] did you ever see anyone enjoy a bath more and now under the big top rehearsals are starting first the jugglers this always looks easy can't understand why it never works when i try it here comes thunder the wonder horse takes practice patience and a piece of sugar to teach her the tricks that make her one of the greatest circus horses in the world [Music] and now here's a really hard trick walking backward on her hind legs [Music] young acrobats have to learn their abcs too back to the center ring where we can see jumbo the elephant rehearsing jumbo is the special favorite of the boys and girls you should hear them laugh when he answers the telephone [Music] high up in the circus tent the flying minnellis are rehearsing their act even when they practice they must be perfect everything must be exactly right [Music] foreign [Music] i'm out for lunch nothing much just a light snack [Music] [Music] here comes the trainer to talk to his lions [Music] [Music] um [Music] he uses kindness and gentleness with his lions no commands no chairs no whip cracking oh [Music] rehearsals are over under the block everyone is preparing for the great show the arena is covered with sawdust [Music] the clowns get ready [Music] costumes are put on [Music] um [Music] they are ready to start and now it's time for us to leave but we've seen a part of the circus that no one with tickets ever gets to see we've seen a certain [Music] [Applause] well that film was a mess um for a couple of reasons one obviously there was a splice break when whoever uh my whatever intern i used uh to transfer it uh it broke while they were transferring it and then they repaired the splice and they just continued recording um oops and i don't even know who i could maybe do research and figure out who it was but it was probably years ago that's the thing with some of these uh these films that i've already recorded like i don't know what their status is so it's at this point it's hilarious and also that was a very dupey print like everything was it was in the shadows or it was super white um plus you know circus footage can be exciting but it's also just documents poor treatment of animals but uh let's go ahead and change it up and let's learn how electricity is made enjoy [Music] have you ever thought about lightning maybe this has happened to you is it the same as lightning what do you notice here rubbing the shoes against the wool rug caused a spark we could see rubbing the comb against hair made a pull an attraction and made sparks we could hear this is a kind of electricity we can try rubbing many things together to see this happen where does the electricity come from the plastic cup the water is it in the balloon [Music] the shirt is it in the wall experiments like these have helped scientists learn that electricity is a part of everything sometimes some of the electricity in one thing can be rubbed off onto something else then we say that thing is charged with electricity it has extra electricity that charge can attract or jump to something else as a spark or lightning we can build a machine to rub two things together continuously happens then does this remind you of lightning what causes lightning in the sky perhaps now you can find out electricity we get by rubbing is interesting but it isn't very useful light for us or heat or to turn motors we need electricity that can be controlled electricity that will flow when we want it to how can we make it flow we know we can get a current of electricity by using dry cells with this meter we can measure that current but now watch here is a penny made of copper and a dime made of silver two different metals of course there is no current flowing in the wires and none in the coins either electricity just like that from the flashlight cell though much much weaker instead of salt water suppose we try something else a lemon the two different metals can produce an electric current in lemon juice too this time the current is flowing the other way how about two coins or metals that are the same when the metals are the same there's no flow of electricity how about a nickel and a quarter they are different metals and let's try something else instead of the lemon there is a chemical action here that is causing the electricity to flow is this the way the cells of batteries work in a flashlight cell we've cut open we can see the parts that are similar to the cells we have just made this center pole and the whole case in closing the cell are like the different metals the penny and the dime with a quarter in the nickel and this damp paste between them is like the salt water the lemon juice or the damp apple do you think this cell can still produce an electric current even split open like this let's see can you tell why a current can still flow from the cell why breaking it open didn't ruin it the electric cells we made didn't produce enough current to light a lamp so we used a meter but if we didn't have a meter there is another way we could find out whether a current of electricity is flowing this compass points north because it is attracted to the north pole of the earth watch the needle of the compass when a magnet is brought near the north pole of the magnet attracts one end of the compass needle but the south pole repels that end and attracts the other see if this wire has any effect on the compass now see what happens when we connect the ends of the wire to a dry cell and the current flows through it and see what happens when we switch the direction of the current when the wire carries a current does it act like a magnet you can make a simple meter by winding a coil of wire around a compass let's see if it works and if we reverse the current we have been able to make something to show when electricity is flowing because the current made the wire act like a magnet if we coiled wire around an iron bar could we make that act like a magnet too let's try it we could do this with a nail or anything else made of iron or steel doesn't work this way let's see what will happen when we put an electric current through it the current isn't flowing yet when we connect the other end of the wire the current can flow what will happen when we stop the current we have made a new kind of magnet one boy once called this a sometimes magnet because it only works some of the time when we wanted to or we might call it an electricity magnet or to make it shorter an electromagnet do you think electromagnets are very important think of all the things that run on electric motors without electromagnets these things would not be possible all electric motors from the largest to the smallest work in very much the same way let's see how do you remember what happens when two magnets are close the poles that are different pull toward each other but when the poles are the same see what happens by changing the poles we can make this magnet turn around and around the poles of an electromagnet change every time the current is turned around first north pushing away the other north pulling the south now switch and itself pushing away the south pulling the north how could the direction of the current be changed without using hands here is a coil of wire around an iron bar now look at this part see how it's split into this is a commutator one end of the wire coil is connected to one side of it the other end to the other side when a dry cell is connected to this post the current will run down and across this metal strip down this side of the commutator and into one end of the wire it will flow through the coil and come out the other side if we turn the coil this metal strip or brush will touch the other side of the commutator and the current will go into the other end of the coil where before it came out every time this happens the current will go in the opposite direction in the coil what will that do to the electromagnet this compass shows us that the pole of the electromagnet near it is north now let's move the coil just enough so that the current will go in the other side there now the pole has switched to south now north now south if the south pole of another magnet were near what would happen here we have placed the north pole of a magnet on one side of the coil and the south pole on the other let's pass a current through the coil and see how push and pull can make a magnet spin this spinning electromagnet is called an armature electricity flowing into a motor made the armature spin now let's see if spinning the armature will make electricity flow out of the motor do you see what is happening would you like to know why here is a magnet and a coil of wire attached to a meter that shows when electricity is flowing suppose we put the magnet near the wire the needle shows there is no current flowing but did you notice something there for a moment let's try again watch the needle there and there again can you see what is happening the meter doesn't show any current when the magnet isn't moving but there is a flow of current when the magnet moves and the flow in the other direction when the magnet moves in the other direction does it matter if the coil is moved instead of the magnet a coil of wire a magnet and a way to turn one of them and you have a machine to produce electricity a generator if you built this generator large enough you could light an entire city but of course you'd have to find some other way to keep it turning what are some other ways water power is one thing you might use at many waterfalls and dams huge generators have been built they're far bigger than our hand generator but they make electricity in the same way with coils of wire magnets and turning wires carry the electric current great distances to our homes that can work for us that can be changed into light it can be changed into heat it can be changed into sound it can be changed into motion to run so many different things [Music] even the machine showing this movie that can change electricity into motion into sound and into light [Music] i love it it uh it's it's got a different pace to it than uh some of the other encyclopedia britannica films um yeah i i don't know i can't put my finger on exactly what it is but um nonetheless uh so behind me i have my uh my film scanner and some people noticed the pictures i had to hang these last night so we could display them for the toe tapping tournament because they uh were mistakes if i if av geeks lost then those would go and so um i'm going to keep them up for a little while um but i'm not saying how things are came out that i'll anyway i'll stop talking about them uh anyway so i've got a the scanner uh blackmagic scanner and then also today boy i just love going off screen today to the other video podcast that you have people were like hold on i'll be right back a minute um [Laughter] oh boy i didn't even comb my hair today all right um this showed up today uh a film scanner it was in a box uh in the driveway it showed up two days early it was supposed to show up uh this friday but uh it showed up this morning and it was just sitting there like i'm glad it wasn't raining but anyways so that's why uh boy this scanner is um where it is because um the new scanner is taking its place uh and the thing is i don't think i'd be able to use the new scanner to do the streaming show because it doesn't have the ability uh like this has the sintel has a hdmi out and the hdmi out is actually going into a box that allows me to just capture it in and upscale it a little bit because it's this full frame um so anyways so the other one i don't think it has that ability so we won't be taking advantage of that at some point i might give you a tour of it once we get up and running what it can do but um oh yeah and thank you william for the coffee coffee is is what we need uh today uh so you can go to inexpensive way to say yes i like this um it messes with my algorithm it messes with your algorithm algorithms all right anyway so i have uh set up on the uh the scanner this film light and color enjoy [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] red paint green paint and blue paint you get a brownish mess but when you mix the same colors by eye you get a color that's very nearly white if you want to understand color you'll have to learn something about light because light and color are very closely related the sun is an excellent source of light and i can use this mirror to reflect some of that light onto the screen inside and there you see it appears to be white now here's a piece of clear plastic shaped like a triangle it's called a prism i'm going to use the prism so that a beam of the sun's white light passes through it and is reflected by the mirror onto the screen inside watch the light from the sun looks white but when this white light passes through this clear prism we see a spectrum of colors light and color seem to be connected so in order to learn about color first let's talk about light here is a panel with different shades of gray painted on it you can see the panel because the light is shining on it and some of the light is reflected back to your eyes but why do we see different parts of the panel as different shades of gray well the answer seems obvious enough it's because it's painted that way but that's not a good scientific answer to the question we still don't know exactly why the paints on this end look dark to us or why the paints on this end look light now here's a white card which i can make any shade of gray that you like watch this how did i do it easy i simply change the brightness of this light which shines on the white card by moving the light farther away when a lot of light shines on the card a lot of light is reflected back to your eye and the card looks white when less light shines on the card less is reflected back to your eye and the card looks gray let me show you we don't have to change the brightness of the light shining on the panel to see different shades of gray it's already painted that way but what about these paints why do some look darker to our eyes than others could it be that some paints reflect less light than others i can show you a piece of evidence to back up this idea here are two aluminum frying pans let's paint one white and the other black and your lights both exactly alike and very powerful i'm going to shine one on the white frying pan and one on the black if what we've said is true the white pan is reflecting a lot of the light that hits it a lot of light is bouncing off of it back to our eyes and that's why it looks so bright the black pen isn't reflecting as much light and that's why it looks so dark but if it doesn't reflect the light that shines on it what does it do with it does it in some way soak up the light and the heat produced by the light let's wait about 15 minutes and see after 15 minutes the two frying pans looked the same as they did before but watch this the white pan reflected most of the light that has been beating down on it and so it hasn't gotten particularly hot although it would be warm if we touched it the black pan soaked up most of the light that hit it and as you can see the light has made it very hot now that's not a very efficient way to cook an egg but it does serve as a convincing piece of evidence it suggests that things that look dark to us look dark because they soak up or absorb more light than they reflect and the things that appear light appear that way because they reflect a great deal of light back to our eyes now we can talk about color you've already seen one piece of evidence suggesting that white light that is light such as you're looking at now and light from the sun are really made up of many different colors of light now let's see if we can mix colored lights together and make white light again here are three light projectors a red one a green one and a blue one now let's mix the three colors mixed together in this way the red green and blue lights look very nearly white so it seems that white light like this is really made up of light of different colors where's the red light coming from it's coming from here white light from the spotlight is hitting the card red light is being reflected off the card onto the boy's face the white light of the spotlight is made up of light of all colors including red there must be something about the red paint on this card that makes it able to reflect the red light and at the same time makes it soak up or absorb all the other colors besides red isn't it logical to think that the green paint on this card absorbs all the colors that make up the white light except green it reflects the green light the same with yellow and blue if what we have said is correct then the red part of this color wheel looks red to us because it absorbs all the colors that make up white light except red the red light is reflected back to our eyes the green part looks green because it reflects green light to our eyes and absorbs all the other colors and the blue part reflects blue light and absorbs the others too in white light we can see all the colors of the color wheel let's look at it now in green light look what happens when the color wheel is lit by green light only we see the green section of the color wheel clearly because the green section reflects green light back to our eyes but the red section and the blue section look almost black the red section and the blue section look dark because there is no red or blue light for them to reflect and they soak up the green light what do you think has happened now the green and blue sections are very dark but the red section is quite bright we have turned off the green light and turned on a red one what do you think will happen if we turn off the red light and turn on a blue one now the blue section is bright and the others are dark now you've had a chance to observe the effect of colored lights on colored objects perhaps the most important role that color plays in science has to do with atoms each different kind of atom has a different set of colors no two sets are alike and so these sets of colors act kind of like fingerprints for atoms let me show you what i mean here are three small wire baskets each filled with a chemical if i light this gas jet notice it burns with the usual color but watch what happens when i heat up these chemicals sodium chloride turns the flame yellow cubric chloride turns it green and lithium chloride turns it red any material can be identified by its own unique colors this line spectrum was made by heating up a chemical and sending a narrow beam of its light through a prism every different kind of material has a different set of these colors no two are alike astronomers are able to take light from stars billions of miles away shine it through prisms and by using these color fingerprints discover what materials the stars themselves are made of [Music] so a film like that is hard um because it it talks about color so when you're doing color correction on a faded print um there's some leeway in trying to make it look right and you might not be able to get it 100 right the more work you put into obviously the better it'll get but um yeah the specifically saying like oh well this gel will make this color do blah blah blah it's like oh boy um but anyways so you saw i applied a lut a lookup table uh to the uh stream and it took the red away but made everything kind of greenish and it's because that lut was made with a different film that had a different level of fade to it so that's how that all came to be all right um i've been hankering to know more about a hawaii our 50th state and thankfully this film is going to help me with that thanks enjoy pacific and then the flooding ocean cracked open in a cataclysm of fire and steam molten rock gushed forth from the earth's hot inner core spurting from this deep crack for millions of years rock piled upon rock one day the first peaks of land rose above the sea it was then that the hawaiian islands for the first time felt the warm light of day [Applause] [Music] [Applause] um through eons of time the land rose and the winds and the sea formed it into what mark twain has called the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean streams have carved the land into rugged and spectacular forms lofty mountains push upward into the clouds towering over thirty thousand feet above the ocean floor these volcanic islands are but the exposed peaks of the world's highest mountain range most of which lies beneath the sea sailing their outrigger canoes across thousands of miles of pacific the polynesians were the first to inhabit hawaii migrating from other islands in the 11 years the polynesians lived here unknown to the western world until their island paradise was discovered by the english explorer captain cook in 1778 lying 2400 miles across the pacific ocean from the american mainland hawaii at its own request became a territory of the united states in 1898 congress granted full statehood in 1959 and america's 50th state was welcomed into the union of the 23 islands recognized in the hawaiian chain today only seven are inhabited hawaii the largest island maui molokai lanai oahu kauai and nihihau a land area about equal in size to the states of connecticut and new jersey together on the big island of hawaii kilauea and moanalua are among the world's most active volcanoes still erupting pouring molten rock across the face of the land and into the sea much of the land on this island is covered by the lava flows on the island of maui haleakala the world's largest dormant volcanic crater has lain silent and naked as the face of the moon since its last eruption nearly 300 years ago oahu is the most important island over three quarters of the six hundred thousand people of hawaii live here the city of honolulu on oahu is not only the capital but it is truly the crossroads of the pacific center of transportation and commerce for the whole pacific area a rapidly growing city of over three hundred thousand people the aloha tower stands in the harbor to welcome ships of many nations which call at this port of honolulu linking hawaii with the rest of the world [Music] most manufactured goods must be imported but in spite of this prices are little more than on the mainland seven airlines link kawaii with the mainland australia and the orient honolulu airport is one of the busiest in the entire united states transportation between the islands is almost exclusively by air the furthest island from oahu is only an hour away in many ways honolulu is not unlike any other american city people work in stores and banks and offices and their average income is much higher than it is in many states on the mainland they pay taxes vote attend church play football ride buses buy the same soaps and drive the same cars as do the people of kansas city or miami they attend excellent schools and universities listen to a number of different radio and television stations read any one of seven daily newspapers have hamburgers at a drive-in or dine at a fine hotel here life combines the conveniences and advantages of our modern industrial society with the ease and calm of bygone times the sea is never far with an annual average temperature of 74 degrees there's swimming the year round exotic flowers grow in profusion nurtured by an abundance of sun and rain which falls in great amounts in some areas rain clouds may hang heavily in one place while only a few miles away the sun shines forth from a clear blue sky here gentleness is a way of life and there's a basic sweetness in the character of the people though pure hawaiians or polynesians now account for only 17 of the population the traditions and culture of old hawaii remain the hula its story told through the motion of the hands is the universal dance of the islands [Music] a luau is a feast in which a roast pig is prepared in the ancient hawaiian manor [Music] statues commemorate great hawaiian kings like kamehameha and streets are named for them the iolani palace former home of the kings and queens of hawaii is the only royal palace in the united states many hawaiian words are used in speech and print cow cow means food [Music] although buddhist temples are strange to most parts of america oriental religions and traditions are common in hawaii chinese and japanese shops and restaurants line honolulu streets hawaiians of japanese descent now account for about one third of the population their native customs provide variety and color most japanese were born here and are as american as the citizens of any other city in the united states their skills have been an important factor in the growth and development of the islands another third of the population is descended from several different races among them polynesian chinese filipino korean about a third of the people of hawaii are of the white or caucasian race nowhere in the world do so many races live so harmoniously and productively together there is an almost infinite variety of combinations of the various ancestries many of the people can count english dutch chinese italian korean and some many other nationalities among their ancestors this fusing of the races is going on in one of the most helpful climates in the world under the american standard of living the result is as handsome and friendly of people as you'll find anywhere on earth agriculture is hawaii's main industry sugar is the most important crop bringing in more than half of hawaii's income from exports the sugar industry is hawaii's biggest taxpayer employs the most people and pays them the world's highest wages for agricultural workers efficient sugar production has been made possible by a high degree of mechanization and intensive scientific research sugar requires an enormous amount of water it takes over 250 gallons to produce just one pound of refined sugar irrigation experiments are constantly underway portable aluminum flumes are the newest method of carrying water to the fields while overhead irrigation has proven most practical in some locations automatic machines plant the seed cane pieces apply the various liquid and solid fertilizers necessary to produce the high yield and harvest over a million tons of sugar a year most of it is sent to the mainland where it is refined and marketed in hawaii sugar is indeed king pineapple long a symbol of hawaii is the second largest industry the islands of oahu kauai molokai maui and lanai produce about 75 percent of the world's supply of pineapple before planting strips of paper are laid across the fields forming rows the paper helps prevent the growth of weeds conserves moisture and fertilizer and increases soil temperature slips from mature plants are distributed along the lines of paper and the planters begin their operations it requires about 20 months for the plants to mature and bear fruit now comes the work of spraying fertilizing and controlling weeds to guide the plants through healthy growth to a successful harvest when peak harvest time comes in early summer many seasonal workers are employed in the fields trained pickers walk along the rows selecting only the fully ripe fruit when the bin on the harvester is full the machine is raised so that the truck hauling it may drive away at the cannery the bins are lifted from the trucks and the pineapples dumped on conveyor belts to begin their way through the processing plant in the form of juice whole or sliced pineapple well over a hundred million dollars worth is exported each year over 30 million cases to be loaded aboard the ships a reminder of the vital role this fruit plays in the hawaiian economy is the giant pineapple which looms over the honolulu skyline pearl harbor and the rusting hulk of the battleship arizona are grim reminders of the japanese attack in 1941 which claimed so many lives the national memorial cemetery of the pacific is the resting place for more than 14 000 who lost their lives in the pacific war and in the korean conflict among them are the graves of many hawaiian japanese who died defending america [Music] today the marine corps air force army and navy in hawaii are an important part of the economy hawaii is the center of our highly complex pacific defense system stretching across the pacific to japan and china the armed forces in hawaii are important as the first line of defense for america's west coast units are trained for constant combat readiness [Music] visitors to the islands have made tourism the third largest industry and most rapidly expanding activity few places on earth offer as much to the visitor magnificent scenery quiet beaches in a climate where it's always spring the beach and the sea at wikikey [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] visitors thrilled to the unique mood and atmosphere of hawaii distilled from its history and geography and the wonderful gentle people who live here with all its beauty brilliant mosaic of cultures thriving industries and military importance hawaii offers much to all america as the fifth of the union that's nice i like all the uh brady bunch uh references in the comments um i like that's where you went to first uh in the hawaii five o of course uh no magnum pi though i don't think right he was in hawaii um anyways i've never been i would love to go someday maybe when i uh fulfill my dream of doing uh home movie day 50 50 50 where we go and do home movie day in 50 states and in 50 weeks then i
