foreign ER welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and think about the ramifications of what we're watching uh but before we get started in doing that I wanted to show you and announce the winners of the toe tapping Tournament of the Final Four so um people working with data got beat by the ZIP code song which I totally understand and it was a closing competition between keep the promise and run for your life but the ELO knockoff beat uh Pita beat the um the anthem the Pillsbury anthem so we have uh the final zip code song versus run for your life that's hard um many of you in the emails that you've been sending me have been talking about how difficult it's been that there's been a lot of back and forth and for me yeah it depends on what mood I'm in depending on which one I'm I I like the most but um yeah send us your votes for which um which you vote for as the final one is it zip code song or run for your life if you don't know what I'm talking about um Watch yesterday's show and I show all the songs and uh you can vote there or you can send me an email at Skip avgeeks.com and say what are you talking about love your emails and I in downtown LA and would love to see you there if you're in town but today we're going to be watching a bunch of films about bananas uh the first film is uh naisa de banana and this is silent um the next one is a journey to bananaland then uh a film that when I show it people get really mad so I'm gonna show it again it's called banana one and it is a parody of a language uh foreign language uh training thing kind of like a sunrise semester where they would teach you Spanish but in this they conjugate the verb banana and then um yes bananas and then of course lunchroom Goes Bananas which is one of the most whacked out Coronet films about um lunchroom manners and courtesy that I've seen uh and then I sprinkled in some advertising that I digitized for the Duke University ad views project related to bananas so um enjoy if you like what you saw you can donate some coffee to KO Dash fi.com avgeeks or patreon.com avgeeks or hit the thumbs up button or there's a super thanks button you can click that um but just uh yeah enjoy all these films about bananas take care bye we'll see you tomorrow bye [Music] lately I've been off my nuts I keep hearing nothing but yeah we Have No Bananas and I'd like to find the guy who can hold that lullaby yes we Have No Bananas I wish that I could go to the Cabaret or snow where the one wouldn't come along and sing that song I got the yeah we Have No Bananas [Music] [Applause] it hasn't got a bit of sense [Music] I wish I could break up a million piano bananas every time that Greeks meet freaking fear we've got an open on an opener yes [Music] and peaches and plums I can stand for any kind of fruit that comes yesterday somebody kept asking me they want the vegetable starts with p I gave it up and I asked him to tell when he said bananas I just had to yell I got the yeah we have no banana blue I've got the blue and when I hear it oh how I feel it it's just like here in bad news [Music] bananas bananas I wish I could break up a million a day by day and week by weeks every time that Greek meets Greeks idiot we have an open up an open arms [Applause] [Music] [Music] lately I've been off my nuts I keep hearing nothing but yeah we Have No Bananas and I'd like to find the guy who composed that lullaby yes we Have No Bananas I wish that I could go to the Cabaret where someone wouldn't come along and sing that song I got the yeah we Have No Bananas [Music] [Applause] it's just like here in bed it hasn't got a bit of sense and I go wild when they come in bananas banana I wish I could break up a million pianists day by day and week by week [Music] but each plant Bears only a single bunch of bananas bananas are Harvest of the year round the men usually work in teams of three one is called a cutter here is a team starting out to work [Music] the cutter uses a sharp edge tool on the end of a pole as the plant bends the bunch comes down on the shoulder of another man who is called a backer each Bunch weighs from 50 to 75 pounds when a man has to carry this load on his back it is easy to understand why he is called the backer the fruit must be cut at just the right stage of growth when the bananas are not too fat the bunch is made up of clusters called hands each hand has from 12 to 20 bananas and each Bunch has from 6 to 14 Hands now how many bananas are in the bunch [Music] the bunches are laid carefully on padding to keep them from being bruised rough handling at this point leaves bruise marks on the tender fruit the whole operation right from the first cutting is planned and timed or from the moment the truck arrives to start the bananas on their way to you everything runs on schedule even as the bananas are loaded for the first stage of their Journey a ship of the Great White Fleet is on its way scheduled to make port at the same time the bananas arrive from the plantation notice how padding is placed over the bunches at all times to protect them from the Sun to keep them from being scarred by rough handling [Music] here is a tractor trailer on its way to a place on the plantation where each bunch of bananas will be washed and inspected before being loaded into Freight cars for the trip down to the coast in the waiting steamship thank you see how each punch is dipped several times great care is taken to see that the bunches are clean before they leave the plantation [Music] that is their principal food crop only a few have their own cattle and the farmer who owns an ox is a rich man as you can see their way of farming is very simple compared to ours on Higher Ground we find the Cocoa Tree in Spanish it is called cacao here is a cacao pod the bean grows in this pod it is from this Bean that we get our cocoa and chocolate the sharp knife he uses to open the pot is called a machete now you've learned another Spanish word after the cocoa beans are spread out in the sun to dry They are packed in bags and shipped to countries all over the world people drink a great deal of cocoa but Americans drink more coffee here are coffee beans being stripped from a bush did you know that they look like little red berries although we call them coffee beans they really are seeds that grow inside their red fruit [Music] coffee is one of the biggest exports of Middle America large plantations may have a million trees and employ thousands of workers coffee grows best on high ground with good drainage and is found only in the tropics carts first bring the ripe berries or seeds to drying pits where they're unloaded to dry in the Sun [Music] here is a typical drying plant where coffee beans are spread out in the sun the outer holes are removed by washing here you see men pushing the beans through a watering trough this washes away the hulls or outer parchment when they are thoroughly washed they are spread out in the sun to dry after they turn green in the Sun the beans are split packed into bags and shipped to Coffee Roasters all over the world we all know what happens to coffee after that now huge streams of water being sprayed over a banana plantation is our first introduction to why this Rich area is called banana land banana plants need a great deal of water in the dry season they have to be watered in this overhead way another method of bringing water to the plants is by surface canals this is called irrigation [Music] here is a large banana plantation and now before we go any further let's take a look and see where bananas first came from bananas originally came from the moist tropical region of southern Asia Alexander the Great found them here in time banana Roots were taken from their original home to the east coast of Africa from here the banana was carried Westward across Africa by the Arabs Portuguese explorers before the time of Columbus found them growing here and took them to the Canary Islands off the North African Coast around the year 1516 father Tomas de balanga brought them to the islands of the West Indies and later to the mainlanders from a place we call Banana land fully now the ship is about ready to leave afford to have or to buy here's how the banana is planted holes are dug a foot deep and 15 to 18 feet apart a banana root a bit looking very much like a tree stump and weighing three to five pounds fighting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in the 1500s Spain dreamed of linking her many new world colonies by joining the oceans ships might sail from Ocean to Ocean without making the long Voyage around Cape Horn the place to build a water path there remained only one way to ship goods by water from east to west around Cape Horn a long trip of three to nine months in the 1800s the United States began to grow people businessmen carry passengers and goods across the Isthmus of Panama to waiting ships but a better way of crossing the isthmus in 1881 Ferdinand de lesseps the great French engineer attempt to overcome the problems of building a Panama Canal for the main Block in the path of the proposed canal de lesseps French company planned to cut through all with its dread diseases dense vegetation and stifling heat and humidity here drink Eights in the early 1900s this country realized its growing Naval and Merchant fleets these historic films of the Canal Zone show how hundreds of work much of this work was supervised by George Washington Goethals a United States Army engineer also important was the contribution of Dr William gorgas who directed The successful fight in overcoming health and sanitation problems Dr gorgas had pools and swamps drained to destroy the mosquitoes that carried deadly yellow fever the Warriors completed the great task of building the canal in 1915 the first cargo ships went through the canal today the Panama Canal remains a vital link for sea travel between two great oceans this ship is in one of the locks or steps that make up the canal today we're going to discuss a very interesting verb the verb denier benir b-a-n-a-r with a tilde over here to Banana we conjugate the word dosely like any other verb we have discussed previously bananas now the verb has very many possibilities because it may seem Limited in that it just deals with bananas but it has many different varieties we have here the banyas female and males we've discussed that previously and then you can see here a mixed Bunch we have in the back from Little bananas like these but in the throne we have the bigger variety the full grown bunions bananas or banyano now when we talk about gender we're not necessarily talking about male and female banana because look you can tell the difference but so what we're talking about is General it's just practicality science gender now when okay let's say let's give an example is the best way to learn anything two born Japanese walking down the street you tell me what this situation is what was wrong with that statement what was wrong with it is that the big bananas said hola banyas big bananas don't have to treat little bananas with respect the little bananas have to three big bananas with six respect soyuz the informal that's the difference and we we see there's really no word in the Mexican language for appeal it started bananasco because Mexicans reverse they were imported but they will not eat it they will talk to it but a banana cannot answer that's the thing to remember bananas can talk through themselves because of the gender but they can't talk to each other so if we have two bananas working Dentistry the situation should be hola banyas instead this could be a group of children we don't say group we call them bunch a bunch of bananas this is a bunch of bananas and they were walking down the street but it's very unusual to see this because they're going to come out in night time and if if you're walking down the street and you see the bananas walking down the street you've got to remember important things that the banana it breaks off the bunch and then it's a singular verb this is a plural verbanya you see the difference one is one one is a lot and so you have to use the plural or the in plural now if you're talking about a bunch of bananas we don't really need the stickers when we're discussing them when you're talking about a bunch of bananas you've got to remember that they uh would would flow like this they come apart I don't want to break this Bunch apart because it's a nice Bunch but they they're big ones and there's little ones I think I might have said that already but I cannot over stress their points because the if the gender we're speaking of here you know what I mean when I say gender and that is what's most important in the whole discussion of being here let's go over the conjugation once more two banana [Music] and now it's very important that you don't overreact to the banana that you treat them with respect and that you don't let it get carried away with you either because you could go on and you could you could you can think about what you're gonna say but you can't overthink in English when we speak to a banana in English it's worthless because they do not understand this predominantly Mexican fruit with sure some grow in America but these are not worth speaking of because they will not understand the language they will not understand the verb that they're discussing about so that's the way that's the most important thing to remember about the verb and that's the thing I want you to remember when you see a banana you talk to it formally informally that's all we have time for now [Applause] here's Beulah cheerleader at the championship game oh something's wrong oh dear I forgot the cheer But Here Comes Elsie to help b-a-n-a-n-a b-a-m-a-m-a noon banana bowl ice cream it's barden's great new ice cream that tastes like a banana split made with creamy smooth banana ice cream with strawberry running all through and lots of nuts and chocolate chips mmm bordens very big on flavor this is the only time of year you can get banana bowl so ask Mom to buy the big half gallon today kids you'll really cheer for Borden's banana bowl ice cream [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] heading Southward to the tropical Crossroads of the Caribbean we arrived in the land of bananas a gift of the tropical Americas to the world [Music] millions of them are cultivated in Central America upper South America and the West Indies [Music] suitable side in this jungle area is selected and the dense tropical forest is cut away to clear the land for the new banana plantation experts on tropical soils test and record the fertility of this area meanwhile the survey department at Plantation headquarters charts the portions to be planted with this razor sharp Blade the machete the native workers attacked the tropical undergrow to clear the way for planting for banana plants cannot flourish if choked by the surrounding jungle foreign Ing and staking operations call for skilled laborers the distances between plantings are measured off accurately in each Direction by a pole 14 feet long [Music] thinking of drainage ditches is necessary in this humid country where the annual rainfall is from 80 to 200 inches bananas thrive in water enriched soil too much moisture May ruin them the ever faithful mule showed us a burden of rootstocks for planting as the seeds of the banana are rarely developed planting is done with these root stops of another healthy plant [Music] These Eyes similar to The Eyes of a potato develop into shoots two months after planting the strong the shoot will develop into a large banana plant the others are cut away [Music] thank you before the young plants lift their leafy shoots to the Azure Sky the forest trees off held this may be one man's work if the trees are small but these large tropical Giants have resisted the axes of six men for many days together [Music] constant cleaning up of the jungle growth around the new three-month-old plant is necessary to ensure proper growth after six months the plant Towers high above the native worker [Music] because of improper cleaning up operations of these two six-month-old plants the one on the right is smaller [Music] we are cutting away a section of a nine-month-old plant and here we see the stem which actually Bears the fruit going up through the center by removing the outer layers of overlapping leaves we expose the plants one bunch of fruit in embryo form for only one stem of bananas grows on each plant [Music] the banana plant because of its size is often called a tree this is not true as the plant contains no wood its makeup consists simply of tightly wrapped overlapping leaves in 12 to 15 months the plant has developed mature fruit ready for cutting during this time the stem or Bunch has increased in weight to nearly 65 pounds has bent over and the bananas now Point upward and outward relying on Modern radio stations Plantation managers are able at all time to coordinate cutting orders with the arrival of the fruit chips with the latest radio order just received cutting Crews each consisting of a cutter backer and mule man enter a plantation's interior experienced Cutters can tell by the size and color of bananas when they are ready for cutting adding a special knife with a long handle the cutter carefully Nicks the trunk of the plant [Music] [Music] the weight of the bunch of bananas pulls the upper part of the plant down to the backer who receives the fruit on his shoulder [Music] after the bunch has been severed from the plant and its blossom end cut off it is stacked waiting to be carried by mule bag to a loading station of the Tramway even for use in the tropics bananas are always cut green and ripened off the plant the plant-ripened banana is unpleasantly mealy and has little flavor [Music] emerging from the plantation area with a load of freshly cut fruit the mule man leads his sturdy mule to the tram car loading platform where the green bananas are unloaded at the nearby siding foreign [Music] railroads are so important to Banana plantations first by tiny gauge trance and then by medium gauge fruit train the bananas must be carried from the plantations to the docks loading of a fruit train is done with considerable care the interior of a car is padded with soft banana leaves for protection and careful inspection must take place before the bunches enter the cars where the overripe fruit is rejected as fast as the fruit is harvested clean loads containing thousands of bunches a whole to the various loading ports where air-conditioned ships call almost every day in the air [Music] the arrival of a banana boat in the Caribbean always causes considerable excitement the wharves bustle with activity fifty thousand bunches must be dispatched in about 12 hours foreign [Music] inspection and Counting of the bunches ship is loaded both by means of this fantastic loading machine of soft canvas pockets and also by continuous Bells before the fruit reaches the depths of the ship it is given a final inspection with our cargo safely on board a specially designed refrigerated steamship wave anchor constant care is given the fruit on route day and night the temperature and the storage compartments is checked and recorded so that the fruit may not ripen too quickly the cargo of green food arrives at one of the many banana ports in the United States the unloading Machinery is lowered into the ship and canva shields are used to protect the fruit from cold winds or hot sun during the unloading operation taken from the pockets of the unloader are thousands of stems representing millions of individual bananas several hundred men in one day can unload and classify a shipload approved according to Quality condition and the number of hands or clusters on each stamp there are enough bananas in this ship to fill 100 break cards [Music] contain the proper temperature in these insulated cars they are heated in Winter and Ice cooled in summer to prevent improper ripening in transit special inspectors board the trains periodically to check the fruit's condition from the railroad cars the bananas are transferred to ripening rooms where they are ripened to a golden yellow color before being sold to millions of consumers serving as banana scallops fruit plate tea bread baked bananas cream pie coconut rolls and as mashed ripe bananas now recommended by Leading Physicians as one of the first solid foods for babies once regarded as a luxury to day bananas find a place on everyone's table yes bananas a gift from tropical America to the world [Music] severally fresh banana cake who could resist it fresh bananas blended throughout the cake for real banana flavor topped with a buttercream frosting one of six irresistible dessert cakes [Music] here's Elsie's family in the big question looks like Beauregard and his sister Bueller are having a little uh discussion banana says Beulah fudge says Beauregard banana fudge well At Last Here Comes their mother Elsie mom which flavor tastes best banana or fudge they are both delicious that's why bordens put them together for their brand new special flavor of the month Borden's banana fudge ice cream gold and smooth tasting banana ice cream and good old-fashioned chocolate fudge mixed together to make Borden's banana fudge ice cream now doesn't that look good oh it tastes good too sabul and Beauregard a real different taste you'll like add Zelmer ask your mom right now to get the package with my picture on it that's Borden's banana fudge ice cream in the big half gallon package [Music] hey [Music] and now a PB TV News special good day Wendell Walters and Morgan the rat here this is the day we've all been waiting for the eyes of the world are on the students of Plum Crest school as they wait the outcomes a strange and unbelievable events that began just two weeks ago because pbtv seals this is such an important story we present this short recap for all the tape tape is rolling it All Began two Fridays ago it was a gray and rainy morning I get going hey Robin [Music] if you guys know what's going on around here your lunchroom's blocked it oh and we're trying to find out what's going on I mean you don't know who's walked you out of the lunchroom yeah okay [Music] TV TV news here um can you identify yourself and tell us uh what's going on yeah I found this but I don't know exactly what's going on I'm real hungry but the lunchroom's locked we got out and came out for lunch why would anyone want to lock up the lunchroom I don't know no Inspirations no nothing it's never happened before so Frankfurt is downstairs right now trying to work things out when he gets back I'm sure everything will be all right [Music] pardon me I'm uh well Frankfurter the principal I mean I help you gentlemen um well thank you Mr Frankfort we do fair to comment on the problem here problem what problem well we understand he's been locked out of your lunchroom oh that that's not a problem as far as I'm concerned that's the best thing that's happened all year I don't think I understand well about that lunchroom that lunchroom has become the biggest problem in this whole school it isn't even a fit place to eat the way these kids carry on in there that's a pretty serious charge when you care to elaborate yes I'll put it this way every day we work hard to try to prepare that lunchroom for lunch to make it clean orderly quiet place and then the lunch bell rings [Music] foreign [Music] who wants you the food wants me yes in the cafeteria they said okay come on come on you guys oh the Press is here glad you could come come on out boys we've got a problem this lunchroom has become a terrible place to eat we used to be happy show em boys [Music] oh [Music] and just look at us now we're down in the mouth some of us have been reduced to tears foreign a few of us have even gone mad so out of business we've had it throwing running shouting wasting we quit the lunchroom is miserable and an Attila this summer respect around here we were on a strike we hereby announce the first official food strike in the history of Plum crafts it certainly go on strike if you were treated it decently wouldn't you change stick around a couple of weeks and you'll see we can change I think we can change I think we can all change just give us a chance we talk it over as a class we can probably change a little bit well I don't know what do you think boys and not a day longer there you have it friends unbelievable but true experts have viewed the videotape and have no explanations for talking food and now the food is threatening to strike well it was clear to students at plumquest that they had a big job ahead of them but they were determined our news team stayed close to the story if you don't do something about the cafeteria the food is gonna quit I don't know what happened down in the cafeteria the other day but I see a lot of problems down there do you see anything happening in the cafeteria that bothers you classic people are just taking the food and throwing it away if they don't want the lunch they don't even take it and leave it on the table for somebody else to eat it what else is happening that you see in the cafeteria Bridges they're taking food at its cafeteria and squishing it especutioner are there any other problems that you see happening down there Lucy there's renting in the cafeteria and they can get hurt that way Serena [Music] I agree with you it's hard there are people littering people littering in the cafeteria so not cleaning up after themselves what else [Music] people throwing food in the cafeteria what do we think about that yeah what can we do about the problem of running that we were talking about in the cafeteria Travis we can set a good example for people really by doing what Zoe well if you knew the person you could ask a nicely to stop running Serena if somebody runs in the cafeteria they don't get a lunch for that does anyone else have any ideas about what we can do to help Aries I think we can make posters and hang them up in a cafeteria oh don't be a smile s make the way don't plan Walk Don't Run we're back in from Chris School talking to the children who are trying to improve their lunchroom and they're here and they've made these signs and I'm going to talk to a few of them hello there what's your name and uh that's very pretty sign if you guys are going to put this up and try to improve the lunchroom so the food doesn't go on strike and what's your name Anthony you're probably in charge of putting all the signs up right hello there could you help with the signs what's your name it's a very pretty science would you put them up for me [Music] I'm back at Plum Crest Elementary School two weeks later surveying if the lunchroom problem has been solved and frankly from here it looks pretty good I thought we could make it better but this is great I think it's great too good morning that's not the end of our story because the last word here belongs to the food will they or will they not strike for the answer we switch you to our remote cameras at Plum Crest School that's right not us now that the kids have shaped up we're happy as can be remember no fighting and throwing keep it at a walk don't waste and enjoy your food [Music] thank you thank you
