hello everybody I'm skip alimer welcome to the a geek's lunchtime streaming show um except that it's not lunch um I'm actually recording this the night before as uh we are going to be traveling to New York City and I'll be attending the orphans Film Symposium at uh the Museum of the moving image which is in atoria uh orphans has been this is the 25th year so I'm pretty excited I haven't gone to all of them but I was at the first several and um so I'm excited to go see some of my old friends film collectors and archists and academics and um hopefully throughout the week I'll be showing some some stuff or talking to some people and um having them on the show so that'll be great but uh today we're going to watch films about New York City and so the films we're going to be watching New York's Harbors world's busiest port story of a city New York around the world in New York and New York vacation city and finally an aerial trip over New York all these are fascinating films I think these are all post war so uh late 40s early 50s I don't think any of them are dipping into the 60s I think these are all 40s and 50s but but um some great stuff in here I tried not to duplicate what I've shown biggest and greatest Port here Rose a Colossus whose position today stands time Commerce just as the spires of masonry on its wat's Edge stand unrivaled as a familiar landmark Forin more than 1500 square miles embracing parts of two states and scores of communities almost any of its eight separate Bays as large as most European Harbors its 650 M Waterfront an everchanging mirror reflecting the work of the world and its needs and tastes trucks from Detroit and L and Norway tires from akan and hemp from [Music] India but such goods are only part of this Mosaic of global traffic the broader picture also reveals the human cargo which makes its entrances and exits no other Port welcomes as many Wanderers to a new life or starts as many Travelers on their way nor is any spot too distant or inaccessible for the more than 100 steamship lines which serve almost 200 World ports direct [Music] from but the visiting Voyager Cannot drop anchor as blly as he pleases there is a fixed reception for those their ship is escorted first of all by a pilot who boards it at Sandy Hook 25 M through a maze of marine traffic through treacherous shifting currents the he knows as well as you know your own [Music] backyard and what a vessel a lot of interest in it Harry dering collector of the directs the receipt of $200 million yearly from duties levied on incoming Goods under Mr ding's control New York collects half of all such duties paid in [Music] America these are Customs Brokers agents lined up to make their payments here too the steamship lines must pay entry fees and tonnage dues where Customs experts inspected for quality and fair price sometimes an importer must pay heavier Duty than anticipated or he may get a refund Customs work is a 24hour a day responsibility 800 Port Patrol officers guard every pier in the harbor their attention focused chiefly on smuggling and narcotics men of the four to midnight Patrol getting their assignments here do not learn until the very last moment where they will be sent nor are they ever assigned to the same Pier two days in a row considerably more Authority is vested in a customs officer than an ordinary policeman including the powers of arrest search and seizure people are not allowed aboard ship and even those who are may be stopped and questioned any time at the guard's [Music] discretion nor immune from search this Customs inspector is making himself more than at home in the crew's quarters and he can scour the engine room room The Galley and even the captain's cabin if he wishes not that this particular ship is suspect this happens to every craft that hits [Music] Port classic conception of customs duties of luggage of passengers from foreign ports not only for narcotics but Undeclared dyable merchandise new and spectors are briefed on the Slick tricks used by Smugglers secret holes in luggage shoe heels with a built-in safe deposit [Music] Vault a false trunk back to accommodate Jewels here now another battle to be waged and won the battle against disease as a boarding party meets an incoming vessel at quarantine if a ship carries no doctor to vouch for all Personnel everyone is inspected chief concerns chalera yellow fever small pox epidemic typhus and bubonic PL any passenger or crew member who is sick of bed must be thoroughly examined by the health officer meanwhile below decks a sanitary inspector seeks traces of one of man's worst enemies a rat bearer of the flea which spreads the dreaded Bubonic plague Ships coming from plague suspected ports are subjected to almost microscopic search here a rat has left proof of his presence but one rat or a dozen there must not be this chance of his leaving the ship alive a fumigating job will endure that rat guards slipped over the haers forall an otherwise simple tight rope Jaun to shore barriers keep the vessel from actual contact with the pier the interior of the ship has been ripped apart the most likely nesting places exposed and when D-Day on the rodent Beach head it brings a task force that does a job in 4 hours visitors aren't welcome deadly cyanide gas is the weapon and a few whiffs will kill humans as well as rats the cyanide discs are chemically treated to release their fumes on exposure to the air quickly the cans are ripped open and the discs tossed below the ship will remain under gas for 4 hours and then fresh air will be flushed through [Music] it now no Harbor could operate efficiently without adequate policing furnished here by the Coast Guard it is important for first of all for the Coast Guard to know where every ship in the port is birthed and to make sure that vessels lying at anchor are in the right areas another concern is pollution of Harbor Waters a serious offense and any evidence of oily build water being pumped overboard is promptly [Music] reported also in the Coast Guard Province are aids to navigation the maintenance and servicing of thousands of lights and channel markings setting out new signals resetting those moved by shifting tides and currents and replacing those damaged by ships are NeverEnding and vitally important [Music] jobs nature too must be reckoned with as sand bars shift and pile up on the Harbor floor channels up to 45 ft deep must be maintained for the Marine mammoths that call here and soundings are taken and shs marked by the US Army Engineers who direct Harbor improvements the shs consist principally of mud and silk to remove them Hopper dredges with giant drags fitted onto the ends of suction pipes are lowered to the bottom huge quantities of water and silt are picked up and forced into The Hoppers where the solids settle and the water flows overboard when the bins are full The Dredge goes out to see where the material is [Music] dumped another of the serious and often unseen dangers reduced by the engineer Corp is Driftwood which floats into the harbor lying half submerged it can easily rip open the hulls of smaller craft and foul propellers daily Patrol sift the entire Port area to collect this debris and almost a million cubic feet of Soden wood are pulled out and burned [Music] annually but if a craft does suffer damage of a not too serious nature a mobile repair vessel whose assuring shipside manner is much in demand when a hurry up job is needed to permit a sailing on schedule for major repairs the port offers some of the greatest shipyards in the world where gigantic dry ducks are seldom without a tenant today much of the work is reconversion from wartime to peacetime structural [Music] needs and up the East River shipyards of a more exclusive nature the Navy yard at Brooklyn where some of the mightiest carriers and battleships are built and repaired but even the world's greatest Harbor could not begin to enjoy that distinction without the adjunct of arterial connections with the interior rolling into the port are 12 major railroads and every road is accessible to every Pier but it takes more than an address stamped on a crate to get goods from Iowa to Stockholm the car detached from its train is shuted toward a classification yard and eventually reaches the railroad lighterage terminal from there the freight will be lightered to the proper Pier side along with other shipments Bound for the same [Music] destination through the port each year moves the Titanic total of 12 million tons of Commerce a traffic unmanageable without the mechanical Marvels to expedite it such as an extremely mobile crane a tractor trailer a fork truck or a carrier which can nully straddle and grab up enough lumber to build a two-car garage and for hoisting jobs demanding really stupendous power floating dcks can swing up to 300 tons this locomotive tender is simple but a port needs plans as well as muscle and machines to that end works the port of New York Authority headed by a commission staffed equally by New York and New Jersey an agency created 25 years ago to unify terminal operations and to promote and protect the Commerce of the port it builds and manages Freight facilities tunnels Bridges and plans Port [Music] development the Holland Tunnel is one of two under the Hudson river which expedites the flow of vehicular traffic between New Jersey and New York the safe operation of these tubes 42 ft below the river bottom means constant [Music] engineering a huge ventilating system blows a complete change of fresh air into the tunnels every minute and a half draws out carbon monoxide fumes from car [Music] exhausts and should you run out of gas any place in the 9,000 ft long time tunnel Port Authority police bring into instant action a powerful tow truck hauls you out in a hurry without charge for a car to be stalled more than a minute would mean a tie-up in traffic and traffic is a ticklish problem with millions of vehicles yearly pouring into New [Music] York for authority projects go over as well as under the Hudson the George Washington Bridge is one of the agency's four magnificent structures which span the various rivers and Bays of the port one of the nation's greatest Bridges costing $60 million the George Washington like the tunnels entails a Monumental task of Maintenance supporting cables must be checked [Music] religiously and of such magnit ude is the paint requirement that a complete job takes a 4-year cycle just as soon as the painters finish they start all over again this then is the sum total of a superbly coordinated Enterprise an effort evaluated not only in the metered measures of a mechanical age but fused with simple sweated toil [Music] this is New York a miracle city a city of tall buildings narrow dark streets magnificent Parks broad Avenues homes and schools stores and theaters and palatial hotels a fascinating City and incredible City the commercial Financial trading and cultural heart of a great nation the United States of America to many of the world's peoples New York City and the United States are one and the same its skyscrapers traffic filled thoroughfares and crowded sidewalks are thought of as typically American a monument to our nation's Restless energy to our passion for things big and great for New York is both a big city and a great City the largest city of the Western Hemisphere second largest in the world it is home to almost 8 million people and to millions of Americans it has become the symbol of our country what is the story behind New York why is New York once a Little Dutch settlement the great City it is today there are many answers to those questions and one of the most important lies in the city's location on that day in the year 1626 when the Agents of the Dutch West Indian company paid the Manhattan Indians $24 for the island now named for them they did so mainly for commercial reasons even then the advantages of the small trading post's geographical position were apparent it commanded the outlet of a Broad River the Hudson navigable for many miles Inland it boasted a superb Harbor sheltered deep water Bays affording safe Anchorage for the largest ships it stood asde an obvious route of trade that would someday connect the new world with the old and the most densely populated areas of North America with both Central and South America and it dominated a back country of vast potential wealth in the short 300 years of its history New York City has more than fulfilled the wildest expectations of its Founders today the city comprises five districts or Burrows the island of Manhattan Remains the nucleus and center of interest of Greater New York heart of the city's commercial and financial business the Bronx sometimes called the burrow of Industries lies on the mainland to the north and east across the river from Manhattan lies the burrow Brooklyn which in turn is flanked by the burrow of Queens both of these Burrows are on the southern end of Long Island and are for the most part residential in New York Bay located near the New Jersey Shore is Staten Island which is known as the burough of Richmond the least popular ated of the five burrows Richmond forms a connecting Link in the Overland motor routes leading from New York City to the Western United States between Staten Island and Manhattan ferry boats ply all day long carrying passengers automobiles trucks and bulk Freight from the deck of one of these boats one may catch a glimpse of the great statue of Liberty a figure that has stirred the emotions of countless immigrants to our Shores here in New York's Harbor dock the ships of the world This Magnificent water gate open the year round deep enough for the largest vessels and spacious enough to hold the entire United States Navy without obstructing normal traffic has been of great importance to our entire National economy without this natural Advantage New York itself would never have advanced to its present position for waterbor Commerce has contributed much to the growth of the City by every measure the port of New York is the biggest and busiest in the world it is estimated that any six of the other leading ports of the globe could be placed within it and yet leave room to spare its oceangoing craft touch about 90% of all foreign ports bringing practically all of the silk good Goods Furs cotton and linen manufacturers jewelry gems chemicals coffee sugar and cocoa sent to this country over 5,000 foreign ships dock here each year about one every half hour of each day carrying almost half the entire foreign trade of the United States the majority of the nation's important railroads as well as its major Truck Lines enter the port in some manner here they load and unload every conceivable kind of freight the freight cars alone entering and leaving the area each year could fill eight tracks across the continent from coast to coast in keeping with its position as the leading commercial city of the United States New York is also the financial center of our nation Wall Street and other streets of the financial district are deep narrow Canyons of tall building buildings the homes of the country's great banking houses the Continental Bank the banker Trust Company branches and agencies of foreign banks on Pine Street is one of the two largest banking institutions in the United States the chase National Bank but it is the New York Stock Exchange on Broad Street America's greatest Securities Market that perhaps typifies the business of the Wall Street District on the floor of the exchange's Great Hall stocks and bonds are bought and sold over a million phone calls a day are handled here and each transaction is carefully recorded to be communicated by Telegraph radio and cable all over the world but Commerce and finance are not the only occupations of New Yorkers the city is a busy manufacturing area and the leading wholesale and Retail trade and Export Center in the nation New York's clothing business the city's leading industry and fourth largest in the United States crowds the center of Manhattan here are produced three out of four of the ready-made coats and dresses and four out of five of the fur garments worn by American women the streets here are packed with trucks while through narrow traffic holes push Boys Guide hand trucks of metal pipe with clothing swaying from their racks clothing that is worn by millions of Americans with more theaters schools libraries and museums in any other American city New York must be ranked as our nation's cultural leader the Metropolitan Museum of Art perhaps the greatest Center of classical art and learning in America exerts an influence that is worldwide while the Museum of Modern Art exhibits displays of modern painting sculpture and photography and is the repository of a unique and valuable Motion Picture collection yet for all its imposing size and activity New York is a city of people people and it is the city's people that make it great here in New York live people of over 60 different National Origins more Germans than there are in Breman more Irish than there are in Dublin more Italians than there are in Genoa here they live together work together play and go to school together in the tall apartment houses that line Manhattan's Park Avenue live many of New York's wealthier residents one of the broadest of New York's thoroughfares it is the main artery of its locality it is constantly filled with non-commercial traffic buses DRS and trucks are limited to traveling but two blocks in One Direction in order to make delivery of goods possible the street itself is supported by gigantic steel stilts above a two-story railroad yard leading to to one of New York's major rail terminals the Grand Central Station the burrow of Queens occupying part of Long Island is perhaps typical of New York's residential areas across the East River from Manhattan it is reached by a number of bridges and tunnels among them the 59th Street or Queen's burrow bridge and the Queen's Midtown vehicular tunnel morning and evening as the residents of Queens commute to and from their offices stores and places of employment in Manhattan these arteries of travel are crowded with traffic in addition to private means of transportation the city of New York has interb and Interurban bus lines plying its streets while underground a municipally operated electrical Railway system spreads through four of the five burrows with the trains leaving the Subways in some areas to travel over the streets on giant steel elevated structures the people of New York May travel mile after mile on this integrated system on either local or Express trains for only 5 cents for each trip by far the greatest numbers of New Yorkers travel to and from work by means of the Subways the elevated and the bus lines in the burrow of Queens the homes of the New Yorkers may vary in size shape and type of construction they may be single homes or apartment buildings but regardless of type they are much like the homes of people living in the residential suburbs of any other large American city here one may see the same familiar supermarkets and the same familiar neighborhood schools and the same familiar milk truck and on certain days of the week even the same familiar family wash lines that one sees in countless cities across our nation but New York again like any modern commercial and industrial city has its less attractive areas Manhattan's Lower East Side has been traditionally the district where live the poorer people as well as the newly arrived immigrants the human story of the Lower East Side is a familiar chapter in The Epic of America here have lived the people whose hands built the city's Subways its bridges and its skyscrapers its tenements and crowded streets magnify all the problems of big city life yet not all of the district is blighted for from its dark tenements have come generations of American workers men and women of many different National Origins who have given their lives to the building of America and from it too there have emerged an amazing number of national figures great Statesmen like Alfred E Smith onetime governor of New York State Joe Davidson Jacob Epstein sculptors of international reputation George Gershwin and Irving Berlin in composers whose songs all Americans sing housed in this historic imposing building is the executive branch of New York City's government like any other City New York has its elected and appointed officials charged with protecting the persons and property of the city near the city hall is located one of the most elaborate groups of Civic buildings to be seen in any city outside of Washington DC the municipal building one of the group is a magnificent structure 40 stories high in these numerous buildings are located the headquarters of the various branches of city government the efficient fire department its men trained to protect life and property in the world's highest buildings its World Fame Police Department whose members are numbered in the thousands its Public Utilities of gas water electricity and Central Steam for heating buildings the largest Municipal health and hospital system in the world and its remarkable Department of Sanitation which is responsible for the disposal of refu and waste the clean in of streets and the removal of snow with its tremendous Fleet of motorized equipment but the greatness of New York is perhaps most spectacularly seen in its buildings for here on the island of Manhattan is the most impressive concentration of stone and steel masonry the world has ever known the vast number of people who have crowded into this District have made for a scarcity of land and a consequent high value of whatever land has been available While others said these have spread outward New York has been forced to build upward from the bay the skyline of commercial New York lower and Midtown is an extraordinary spectacle and the effects of hundreds of towering buildings crowded together along the narrow island is one never to be forgotten tallest of New York structures and the tallest in the world is the amazing Empire State Building it Rears its 103 story head 1,250 ft over the sidewalks below it has 7 mil of elevator shafts and 73 elevators which travels so fast that a passenger entering one at the street floor May reach the 80th floor exactly 1 minute later one of the most famous hotels in the world is the Waldorf Historia 80% of the building is over the tracks of the New York Central and the New Haven railroads and private railroad cars carrying guests of the hotel may be shunted to a special entrance located in the subbasements 47 stories high and containing 2200 rooms the Waldorf atoria Hotel has been called New York's unofficial Palace Rockefeller Center a group of buildings occupying Three City Blocks is the largest building project ever undertaken at one time by private Capital it is a self-contained City with business offices centers of international Commerce theaters and its own post office the central RCA building is in area the largest office building in the world and so large is Rockefeller Center itself that its estimated daily population is over 100 50,000 people from the one room Log Cabin of a Dutch Trader to the multi-story buildings of Midtown Manhattan that is the story of New York a fabulous City a fascinating City New York is a great City for many reasons its strategic geographic location its tremendous Harbor flanked by Marine Highway air and railroad tributaries have made the city one of the world's greatest Transportation centers the commercial capital and the international trading capital of the United States here too is concentrated much of the banking wealth of our country for the city is the financial center of the wealthiest of the world's Nations it is supreme among our cities in the volume of its retail trade which is diverse in interests and in the character of Commodities the raw materials for which are drawn from the far reaches of the world sometimes only to be fabricated and subsequently redistributed in new form in diverse directions likewise New York's wholesale trade calls upon all parts of America and the world for supplies eggs from the middle west citrus fruit from Florida and California vegetables from the south and New England to feed the people of New York and the people of other countries it is one of the greatest manufacturing and processing areas of the nation the nation's foremost center of culture the city of museums and a city possessing hundreds of Acres of public parks for the rest relaxation and health of its millions of residents and thousands of annual visitors best known is Central Park in the burrow of Manhattan with its Zoo its playgrounds miles of shaded walks and drives and its restful Lakes New York with the most complex Municipal School System in the world with churches of every denomination with homes of variated pattern ranging block by block along miles of streets Avenues and boulevards with multi-storied hotels to welcome business visitors and tourists it's tall buildings housing International and National communication systems it's thousands upon thousands of young people who tomorrow like their parents before them will continue to create a great story the story of a great city the city of New York everybody dreams of traveling all of us can dream but only a few get the chance to travel to far away places [Music] City [Music] Baghdad on the subway that's what oh Henry called New York the town where East Meets West amidst the babble of aund tongues New York is where the Latin Roomba shares a juke box with a beer barrel PGA Manhattan's Lower East Side is a living example of America's Melting Pot in action and has become a new world version of the Old World Bazaar bargaining between Merchant and customer Still Remains an art here individuals appraise the quality of the goods and test each other's wit and willpower even the young learn quickly that it's each man for himself in a world where panties and pickles live side by side [Music] but even this old world marketplace of all Nations has bowed to Yankee flavor and Rhythm hurry hurry hurry hurry the world is so full of a number of things and we don't want to miss [Music] any the Spanish FR equivalent for an ice cream cone is Baga for a few pennies the street corner vendor shaves the ice and from a rainbow of flavors your own choice colors the Frosty [Music] Cone here's a cooling treat that satisfies the Sweet Tooth common to youngsters the world over the smile for Shadows Delights to come yet sugar and spice and everything nice is just a SM part of New York Life for young Puerto Renos some earn extra money selling shopping bags or with a shoe shine box on a busy Corner when life becomes hard and problems are puzzling one is willing to accept some outside guidance to success and happiness poly the fortune teller relies on chance rather than reason song and music too help to carry the burden of the day and musicians performing in the Public Square have delighted people for thousands of [Music] years man cannot live by bread alone and the soul is nourished by art as well as spiritual [Music] inspiration England raises her Heroes on the playing fields of Eden but The Sandlot or New York Central Park does nicely for Americans of all Races even the World Series cannot Excel the spirit of this game between two Puerto Rican neighborhood [Music] teams it won't be long before this youngster will be right in there Banting him out and who knows the greats the dagos Robinson's campanell and Williams got their start just like this from bull fights to sandlot baseball exciting sports are favored around the world by people of Spanish descent in another part of town the game of Bo an outdoor bowling game imported from Italy still finds favor with the oldtimers two teams Bowl in competition points are scored by the number of balls closest to the small ball or palino here there is no Reliance on an umpire's quick eye inches are carefully measured but even the ruler cannot prevent discussion B means to knock an opponent's ball out of scoring position and oh how they [Music] try Body English comes naturally to veteran players you must try to control the ball as long as it is in motion a close decision can lead to as much argument as a rhubarb in a baseball game this could very well be Rome or Naples but it's still New [Music] York though in this country B will hardly outlive the oldtimers younger Generations find their common meeting ground in a red hot game of [Music] stickball for foods with foreign flavors this is a wonderful town for [Music] marketing New York's many National Origins have enriched the city with a World of Variety in foods and among the finest stuff are the Specialties of Italy mozzarella a cheese product is a must in the preparation of mouthwatering manotti a Neapolitan dish not easily duplicated by unknowing [Music] hands macaroni is first stuffed with ricotta something like cottage cheese and then with mozzarella then it is saturated with a well simmered tomato sauce whose recipe has been handed down from generation to generation finally topped with a sharp paragano [Music] cheese the dish is placed in the oven for an hour to let all the flavors Mingle and then with Papa's approval bapao a little bit of Bavaria clings to New York's Upper East Side here is Yorkfield brow house with its singers and its gut kite the shoe plat or Slap Dance is traditional and so is the Beer Drinker toast Alo Bret minin the dancing is full of humor and just like this beer stein it's Lusty and full of the European flavor and now the spirit of the Schnitzelbank a musical audience participation game it doesn't make much sense but everyone has a lot of fun with all the different backgrounds that make up New York there's one day in the year when everybody is Irish St Patrick's Day of course it's a proud day for New York when its milliion turn out for the wearing of the green to the tune of the Jigs and the sound of the bag pipes officials of church and state review the Marchers from the steps of St Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue but the real dignitaries of the day are the Kelly and the Ryan the oconnell and the O'Brien it is their past and their future which all New York workers celebrate today as friends and [Music] neighbors Chinatown calls up memories of subtle Foods Aromas of Oriental delices linger in the streets news stands which carry the community these five Chinese language dailies helped to give these streets a foreign appearance but Johnny Lum like any other American kid has his own reading [Music] habits and this could be any Street in New [Music] York beautiful Oriental handicrafts attract thousands of Travelers who in many ways are the most amusing sites in [Music] Chinatown the really big event in this community's life comes with a celebration of the Chinese New Year when Eastern customs and Eastern symbols turn this section of New York into a corner of the Far East [Music] [Music] St firecrackers are an old Chinese invention their explosions are joined with the sound of drums and clashing [Music] symbols all the noise serves to encourage the dragon as he tries to drive out the evil spirits of the old year to clear the way for the new all this is New York City where you can make a trip around the world in the shadows of the [Music] skyscrapers from the deck of a giant ocean liner Vis of Manhattan Island along Lower Broadway celebrities are recorded a typical New York welcome Wall Street a man Canyon in the heart of New York's Financial District at the far end is old Trinity Church one of the oldest landmarks on the island the original church was built in 16 97 and replaced by the present structure in 1846 grav Stone still stand tribute to some of the ear settlers at wall and Nassau on the site of the old Federal Building is the sub treasury it was here that George Washington took oath of office as first president of the United States at Broad and wall is the imposing Stock Exchange the financial post of America where ticker tape measures the fluctuating Fortune of the nation dominating New York City Hall is the municipal building an
