graduated from high school so you'd rate a good job all right stack them up take them down push them around that's a good job today a good job for a guy with your abilities is a job in electronics nuclear power communications aircraft mechanics computer technology radar even sonar all you need is some special training if you have what it takes the navy can be your open door to a great future listen to me man i'm lou laws you have the smarts to get your high school diploma so you stand a good chance of passing the navy's entrance test they aren't that tough if you apply yourself and instead of pushing crates around you could be an electronic school like these brothers of course everybody has to go through boot camp [Applause] you get checked in on that top line in a space marked name print your last name first name and middle initiation and you get threaded out and your schooling starts right here good morning man [Music] chief petty officer this morning i'm gonna give you a lecture of course you have to get the old boat in shape you know what i mean [Applause] and you learn to swim yeah swim man you dig nobody's going to shove you in the pool and let you sink i mean they will teach you how to handle yourself in the water you know you may not make it to the olympics but hey man you will be able to stay on top side of the water you know what i mean also at boot camp you'll take a few more tests to find out what you do best if it's electronics you might be sent to a school like this one at great lakes illinois if mechanics is your thing you could go to aircraft mechanics school like this one in memphis tennessee now back at great lakes they call this a steam generator lab here you'll learn how to turn steam into power communications look what the navy has for you in fact the navy has over 70 vocational training schools that could be open to you and don't forget you're getting paid all the time you understand what happens after your specialized training the fleet has the good job you've been looking for now you're working as an electronic specialist with all the responsibility and respect you deserve all you working those cool navy jets aboard a carrier [Music] [Music] of course communications are essential as i said the navy has over 70 areas that require good well-trained people you could be one of those people and think of the value of this training in civilian life i'm petty officer second class donald christian i've been in the navy 10 years and i've been on four ships as it stands now i'm the senior barber aboard this ship and i'm also the minority representative i can sum equal opportunity up as such for the young black that comes in the navy today he has to have a good educational background he has to have an initiative goal he has to have self-discipline and he surely has to have self-motivation with this combination a young black in today's navy can achieve any particular goal he so desire don't let anyone tell you that you'll be put on board a ship and left there for months and months you'll be stopping off at exotic ports famous historic cities all over the world and there's something else to you don't have to go alone the navy has what they call the buddy system where you and a friend from home can join the navy together and that's a gas so think it over [Music] how long have you been on that machine brother two years three years are you beginning to feel like you'll be there forever you know you're really quite a guy man you did well in your math and science courses in high school and after that the trade school was easy because you know you have some kind of a know-how but you soon found out that doing the same thing day after day is a trash why don't you go into something like nuclear field i mean it man you might be just the guy the navy's looking for and it's nuclear field program and it's far out here's what it's all about after boot camp in a short tour at sea you start going to school i'm just saying going to school is like saying the ocean is wet right listen that schooling you'll get is about two years and the best training the navy can provide fifteen to twenty thousand dollars worth of training man that's a lot of dope your first schooling will be in electronics or communications or seagoing engineering your basic nuclear power schooling will be at land-based nuclear power plants you'll take some breaks now and then short stretches of sea duty and you can even take leave between school terms when you complete this training you'll be ready to join the navy's modern nuclear fleet the navy's nuclear field program is no snap there are brothers just like yourself doing it you could do it too man do you ever get the feeling you're going to be in a steno pool the rest of your life why don't you get into something that is interesting important and a challenge like computers photojournalism dental technology lithography air control or one of more than 30 different fields of navy office all this is yours in the new navy and you will receive the same pay as a man doing the same job and get the same advantage as a man it may sound a little scary and unfamiliar to you now specialty schools will take care of that they lay it all out for you it isn't a case of passing or flunking on your own the instructors are there to help you over any hang up they work with you because they want to see you make it after completion you may go on to advance training or into interesting work as an air control tower operator or a link trainer instructor or photographer or wherever your specialties point you know your duties may take you all across the united states or to england italy hawaii or other choice overseas locations remember what i said earlier pay that's equal to a man's advancement equal to a man's hey man hold it wait a minute got a job to get to huh then study all night classes tomorrow then work again if that's too much of a hassle hey it's got to be another way those two guys you just passed back there the ones in the navy uniforms but they are freshmen just like you as a matter of fact one of them plans to major in political science just like you the other fellow is going into engineering but they've got an edge something else going for them they're both in the naval reserve officers training corps they are free to choose their own majors from a selected list and the navy picks up most of the tab that's what i mean you know they pick up the biggest part of the bread and the navy pays for their tuition fees books uniforms and then gives them a hundred dollars a month to put in a slide beside you understand they attend some classes in the naval sciences each week and they go on a six-week cruise in the summer that's a gas that's a great cruise and it gives them a chance to stop off at some interesting ports sure it's something in addition to their regular college work but you know what one midshipman said it gives you something that other students can't get they aren't going to graduate for almost four years but they already have jobs they don't knock themselves out just meeting expenses and when they graduate they'll be commissioned incidents in the united states navy or they might be second lieutenants in the marine i'm not telling you the nrotc takes everybody that knocks on that door but if you have what it takes the navy recruiter is the man to get you straight so you're a law student huh you got a future ahead of you you'll join a big law firm then there are the years of doing leg work for the more senior lawyers and handling briefs in the back room then if you prove out you can carry some other lawyers briefcases around well there's a law firm that will give you valuable courtroom experience almost immediately if you're ready the name of the firm the u.s navy in the navy jag corps you will go to work as a practicing attorney and that means at work in a courtroom you understand my name is trevor g bryan i'm a member of the judge advocate general core united states navy this is probably the only area where you can start off as a young lawyer handling your own cases and get the wide variety of experience that i've had one of the things i will say again as regards being a black lawyer in the navy is that requests are coming in from all over almost all over the world actually philippines anywhere for black lawyers to represent black clients and uh it's a very serious matter and uh i think that an individual who is reform minded who is interested in the problems and issues that face military people who was issu interested in challenging legal issues and challenging trial practice could find uh much in terms of experience uh much to grow on in in the practice of navy law if you haven't completed your degree the navy has programs that will enable you to finish law school the navy recruiter has all the answers so if you're a graduating law student or have some law school left and you have what it takes the navy has a practice for you you don't know where it is all around the world next month you step up and get your big fat diploma beautiful the next step is a big job you may not believe this but the navy has been waiting for you to graduate yeah you this you know the navy has something special for you a chance to be a navy officer and that's more than just a job it's responsibility at the management level it's decision making leadership personal participation it's rewarding too you know satisfying it can happen all over the world you could be working in public affairs or meteorology or information in education counseling communications data processing personnel supply administration whatever your talent suggests actually it doesn't matter what you studied in college whether it was music or mathematics the important thing is that you have what it takes to get an education that means you have what it takes to become a naval officer um taiwan the navy provides very spacious living orders but the trend is now to cut out and find your own apartment you know girls still like to privacy on their own pad you know and a place to entertain their friends as a naval officer candidate you'll get your indoctrination training here at the newport rhode island base and you'll be going to school with demand officer candidates as a matter of fact except for some of the engineering courses in pt all the classes are now co-ed you dig most of the courses will be navy studies along with science math and leadership and yes you will go on a navy ship on completion you will be commissioned and instant in the us naval reserve congratulations again [Music] you've already done the hard part you almost completed college now step on up to the navy hey brother would you like to fly that's right fly fly navy navy air is something else and the men who do it are a special breed in all the world only a few thousand men have mastered the skies from the deck of a ship [Music] it all starts right here in pensacola florida the annapolis of the air here at naval aviation schools command you'll get your basic indoctrination [Applause] instructions in aviation science and physical training the navy doesn't need dead heroes you know what i mean so they teach you how to stay alive on land and in sea you'll get dunked muddy cooked and chilled you'll find that when you're hungry enough common weeds taste like soul food you dig and keep you going you'll survive which is the idea of the whole thing you know what i mean and you'll graduate with a commission of insulin in the navy about here you begin to specialize in a special type of aircraft maybe you're a jackman or a multi-engine type selected to fly the long-range patrol anti-submarine or logistical support planes or maybe it's helo's for you you know kilos instead of helicopter whatever you go on to intensive training and you come out with wings on your chest you understand you've joined the elite now you are no longer just someone you are someone special but maybe you take a different tack and train to become a naval flight officer an ad crew member who operates the complex electronic systems of the aircraft early warning systems operations electronic countermeasures tactical data systems anti-submarine tactical coordination bombing and in navigation or radar intercept and that's a whole lot that navy flight training is really special my name is fred boone and i know i completed navy flight training some years ago and i know it to be the best in the world not only do i know it to be the best in the world but most airlines know it to be the best in the world too just six weeks after i was discharged i had a job with one of the best companies here in america and the main reason i was hired i tell you was because i was trained by the navy navy flight training also prepares you for many other fields in addition to the one i'm just in that it prepares you for anything you want to do in life it's not only the technical training you get it's the sheer confidence that it builds in you it uh gives you a sense of pride that will let you uh do it just about anything that you choose to do with your life but maybe flying isn't your thing okay i understand you'd still like to move into the irresponsible decision-making leadership position and immediately right one-third in civilian employment you might be a trainee for a long time navy officers candidate school is for men who want to move immediately toward responsibility responsibility of a division officer aboard ship that picture there on the wall is of jessie l brown he was the navy's first black naval aviator and the ship that we're on is named after him and that represents the navy first there are quite a few firsts in the navy these days i've been around for about 16 years now and i've seen quite a few important changes occur in the navy i think that from my own point of view most of the changes have been positive but i think what we're talking about is uh the kind of improvement that is important to a black man and that is the fact that if you are capable and if you are able to get a job done that you can do it in this man's navy today the kind of thing i'm talking about is a guy that's willing to get down with the program that if he knows what he wants to do or is willing to let somebody offer something to him that he can do then all he has to do is have the initiative and the willingness to get with it the opportunity exists the responsibility of taking charge of the work the welfare the advancement of 10 to 50 men you might be in operations where you'd be responsible for communications navigation and tactical operation of the ship you could work in the executive department become a staff officer an oceanographer civil engineer meteorologist specialist in naval intelligence your salary even as a junior navy officer is competitive with civilian employment and with it comes use of officers club and navy exchange tours airline discounts and medical care all this and you earn 30 days paid annual vacation you can expect promotions and pay boost on a fairly regular basis you get in addition regular pay increases due to time and service if excitement adventure travel responsibility and advancement appeals to you talk it over now go see your navy recruiting officer the navy's been waiting for you to graduate both of you the whole world's been waiting too well that's it it's what's happening in the new navy it's opportunity advancement good pay equality and a lot of things that count the new navy is together all together and another thing when you see that brother associate the recruiting office do me a favor with them tell them do raw send you [Music] hey hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to our lunchtime streaming event um we've been doing this for this is into our fourth week i'm skip alzheimer and i collect old educational films and show them to folks like you all over the place so thanks for joining us today that was all together which was a navy recruiting film aimed at african americans in the early 70s um blue rawls narrated and uh he is hip you dig um i had the opportunity to actually show this film with uh african-american uh professor at the hunt library at north carolina state university and he commented on this film uh because he was in the navy when this film came out and so he was saying that while opportunities were better sometimes in the navy they weren't great and um he had to deal with commanding officers who were still very uh stuck in the early 20th century and were racist and i think at some point there was actually a strike that they put on it wasn't a mutiny but it was definitely a strike because of the unfair conditions um so it wasn't totally rosy uh even in the 70s but i like this film because it is trying to everything it can possibly do to try to get african-americans to consider joining the navy because of the opportunities the opportunities being getting educated getting legal representation um having a place to live a better salary and also an opportunity to meet your partner man or woman because most of the classes are coed you dig um so i i like this film because it kind of shows you like what was happening at the time um but uh i guess one of the the attractions here was that you could learn to be a commercial pilot through their flight training this next film is a film made by northwest airlines made in the mid 70s and it kind of shows what it's like to fly northwest so this is only way to fly enjoy [Music] western airlines western airlines new york to our friends of every nationality welcome to farmers of america and it has a giant hamburger in it i love it and it kind of says where everything comes from so here's uh all-american meal enjoy [Music] you know we can tell a lot about people by analyzing what they eat [Music] how could this meal become so important in our way of life [Music] i think the biggest factor for me is that i'm a teacher and i when i get home from school i'm extremely tired and i don't have um i'm totally wrong this is another film uh the film that i was thinking of is called food for america which i'll show another time this is actually a an indictment of the american diet which is a fast food so here's nutrition an all-american meal enjoy [Music] you know we can tell a lot about people by analyzing what they eat [Music] how could this meal become so important in our way of life [Music] i think the biggest factor for me is that i'm a teacher and i when i get home from school i'm extremely tired and i don't have the energy patience or time to cook a real meal for my family so we'll often go to a hamburger place and get it because it's quick and convenient and easy and the food is usually pretty good so for me it's it's that i don't have enough time to cook a real dinner like my mother used to cook me when i was a kid [Music] as one culture differs from another so do their foods differ telling us about their lifestyle their values and their resources [Music] if it is true that we can tell a lot about a culture by what they eat what is the so-called all-american meal of hamburger french fries and soft drinks say about us [Music] what is a hamburger french fries and soda pop well everything that we have all of our objects the house the clothes the car all say something about us and what does a hamburger french fries and soda pop say about us we eat a lot of junk we're lacking thoroughly in imagination we're lazy we don't like to cook for ourselves we don't care what we eat i think this says that we didn't take the time anymore to sit down to a decent meal and the meal break with it to interrupt the daily hustle and bustle for the hour or hour and a half lasery enjoyment they say is that we're always on the go we're always in the car we're a mobile society and we eat on the run yes we do eat on the run and the quick food stands and restaurants that specialize in hamburgers fries and soft drinks are serving more of us more often than ever before [Music] since what we eat helps determine whether we reach our potential physically it is important to understand the nutritional disadvantages of the meal most often served by all these quick food restaurants among other things nutritionists claim the meat has too much fat and the bun has lost valuable roughage and nutrients due to the use of refined flour [Music] the soft drink adds usually unneeded calories and no other nutrients while weakening the teeth with acids and yet more and more people eat this same meal more and more often [Music] you know a lot of people eat that same meal twice a day and that's the problem sure the hamburger and the fries give you some nutrients but not all the nutrients you need and the way we hurry through the meal is not very good for the digestion the more we hurry the more we demand fast efficient service and the fast food chains give it to us why are we in such a hurry i can answer that in one word the automobile it's accelerated our whole pace of life [Music] so [Music] few developments during the history of man have affected us as much as the automobile since along with the automobile came a whole new lifestyle a new set of values as the auto increased in importance the pace of our lives increased speed and mobility became more important than nutrition [Music] since we eat this meal so often it's a good idea to think of some ways to improve it nutritionally one way is to use lean meat the leaner the better since most of us get too much animal fat in our diet another improvement would be to use buns that are whole grain for added roughage vitamins and minerals foods such as lettuce and tomatoes also contribute important vitamins and minerals cheese is an excellent source of protein as well as other nutrients and so we have a sandwich with foods from all four food groups the meat group the milk and dairy product group the fruit and vegetable group and the bread and cereal group this is the main attraction of the improved all-american meal whole grain bun lean meat cheese fresh fruits and vegetables another way to improve the meal is to make the french fries in polyunsaturated vegetable oil to avoid excess saturated fats and finally if for the soft drink we substitute juice or milk we add still another source of valuable nutrients [Music] so fast foods aren't necessarily junk foods the so-called all-american meal is not really a bad meal although there's a pretty good case you could make against the soft drink the real problem is too many people eat that meal too often and don't get the variety they need and variety is more than just the spice of life variety is a nutritional necessity the other problem with the fast food meal is we miss out on other values the traditional meal was a time when the family and friends could get together and for companionship communication we're losing that now we're losing the art of conversation not to mention the art of cooking [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] if our reliance on fast foods is really taking us away from some of the values that are important to our health as well as our culture then where will we be tomorrow a hundred years from now they will be looking back at us and say we have been eating a lot of junk i think they would say that in our time we were always ate in a hurry we were thinking more about convenience than we were of our health i think they'd probably say they why was it so slow they'll probably have faster service foods [Music] oops yeah so sometimes uh the titles of the films kind of smear together in my head and so that was definitely not food for america um a different thing also although it's it's fascinating that uh thematically it worked really well with uh only way to fly somebody pointed out that there was these musical montages with still images and panning across the screen and things like that really kind of fascinating um how that happens like occasionally when i do a theme show there's this sub theme that appears and it's maybe it's subconscious maybe it's just a serendipity but i love when that happens this next film is about rats enjoy [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] no hey it's dark in there yeah it gives me the creeps if you're scared of the clubhouse don't join the gang man hey what's that something's in here come on chicken no see for yourself will something's moving over there hey yeah i think i see him it must be a million of them they're gonna get us i'm getting out look at them all just leave them alone man stay away from them they won't hurt you yeah but look what they're doing to our stuff hey red get away get out of here square ow hey he bit me he really bit me this really hurts hey joey look at the blood you better get to a doctor i don't want them but it sure hurts it stinks it stings like i never had hurt so bad i'm telling you joey you gotta see the doc you could die from a rat bite he's right you better go man i told you let them alone but they were messing up our stuff will yeah did you see what they did to your men boy you could kiss that baby with that well we'll take care of that later going home so your mother can take you to the doctor after the doctor we'll start planning how to get back at those lousy rats brother this is war how we get them don't know but we'll find those rats and we'll let them have it yeah how we don't even know where they went listen stupid i know one thing that rat that [ __ ] you has his own game and it's gonna be war here's gang against man we'll fight him to the dead of guns okay well we're with you when we figure out how they operate find out what they do and where they live when will johnson and his gang get set for war those dirty rats won't even have a chance first we gotta be sure what they look like spot them before they see us they're brown dirty smelly things with lice and fleas crawling all over them they got long tails sharp nasty claws then sought a big bigger than a mouse but not as big as a cat a doll where do they come from anyway oh from sewers and dumps any place you find dirt and feel there's old man red sneaking around looking for food and stuff they're mean and smart this red gang is powerful and dangerous they get weapons to fight with we gotta look out for hey will you know that teacher mrs wilson she's cool she's okay what about her she said that iraq's teeth are one of his main weapons their razor sharp don't tell me man i felt those lousy teeth well wilson said that a rat's teeth grow all the time and he's got to grind them so they won't grow right through his head no kidding so he's always chewing to keep his teeth small and sharp man i could tell you about that what else did wilson say she said a rat's skin is worse than his teeth he always hangs around dirty filthy places and gets germs and fleas on it then he carries the germs and fleas to other rats and to people it's the germs and the fleas that really make you sick and cause bad disease bad enough to kill you rat diseases kill more people than all the wars put together right man and don't ever touch a dead rat because he could have fleas on his skin that might still be alive they jump on you and bite you and the disease that comes from fleas is the worst kind there is know something else they say there are more rats in the world than people a mother rat can have lots of babies in six weeks sometimes 12 at once you mean though mother ray can have 12 babies and six weeks later have 12 more yeah and it don't take long for them to grow into big dirty rats big enough to wreck everything in sight those stinking things hundreds of them can be born in just a little bit of time sure that's how they bid up their games before we have a chance to get back at them for the damage they do we gotta work fast or they're out numbers i saw them once in a big bunch down at the dump thousands of them big ones and little ones hanging around in a pack one thing for sure the more dirt and garbage and mess the better they lack let's track them down a little maybe get some clues like this mess yeah yeah thanks a lot red hey guys look at the tracks all over how to get there they're going right up the wall those flats are smart all right they use their claws to hang on for dear life dig right into the cracks and cling to everything shooting right up in pole without falling off they clamp fences and run right inside the walls imagine having claws sharp enough to do all that old man red likes to nighttime don't you yeah you don't see much you're in the daytime then he creeps out of his rotten hole at night and starts doing the damage wonder how they got in here doors claws they come right through a busting window or chew right through the doors and make holes in the walls with their stinking teeth they'll chew and know and scratch their way through anything to get a lousy scrap of food or a little water they'll even chew tv wires and rip up toys and clothes to get stuff to build their nests like our stuff look what they did to the clubhouse and all our things i'm really mad yeah makes you want to kill them the minute you see them but that's not the answer though when i start to shout it that's what made the big one bite me right joy i hear guys talking about shooting rats and giving them poison that's not the answer either there's too many and they move too fast i sure don't want to get bitten again it hurts too much i once heard about some reds going into a baby crib they got the baby too and they never would have gone near that baby if someone had washed his face and cleaned the crumbs out of his bed that's it you guys if the place is clean to begin with the rats stay away he gets a nose on him that smells food a mile away if we get food and garbage laying around we're asking for it right right will they're not getting any more to eat from us they need food shelter and water to keep alive can't exactly keep water from those reds drink dirty water from the sewers puddles and even lick the dew off the grass guess he can always find some place to stay because they're hoes all around but we can keep the food away and block up all the holes we know about hey no food means they'll stop to them right when they get that hungry either their go away or the bigger rats eat the smaller ones oh i say keep them out for good get that broken glass out of here and put a screen in let's really clean this joint up get all the crumbs in the litter and the junk off the floor anybody leaving food around us getting it right in the mouth you guys sweet and i finished picking up then we got to get that stinking garbage outside wheel rats can hide in the garbage and eat all the food they want those rich really use the garbage as a shelter it's gotta go i mean really gotta go we all gotta dig in and get all this stuff from around the kids and put lids on the cans man a garbage can without a lid is just asking mr rat in his gang to a big fat feast we can put food into metal containers [Applause] how about that good man a rather eat through wood and cardboard but he can't get through metal from now on at home and at the clubhouse too we store our stuff in cans and make darn sure there's no food around anywhere and clean up the table after meals put all the food away that'll drive the rats out get all the stove in all the shelves any place where there might be food and how it's about doing the dishes afterwards and cleaning out the sink and mopping up the spears remember old man rap goes after the smallest drop of water everything's got to have a can and a cover if we're going to do the job sweep up the crumbs we're starving to death and then they'll move out or die oh man randy's in for soccer we're going to clean him out our bus that's a good one will clean them out by cleaning up clean it's a gym or us clean them out drive them out make them run let's get them you guys this is the way no food no rats no water no rats no openings no holes no rats no garbage no filth no ribs rats are lousy they're dirty they stink they bring disease they bite people they destroy they even kill we'll look them we'll fix them by starving them to death we're gonna win this rotten war then move away or die clear them out by cleaning up i just wonder whose neighborhood whose house will they go to next [Music] sorry about that guys um so i have a couple of films about rats um one of them is called this one rats another one's called rattopolis which is a canadian film in it i in my brain i was thinking that that some of the scenes in this film were actually in that film um anyways um sorry hope i didn't spoil too many lunches with that uh it is a fascinating film though i love how they they talk about it they have kids it's you know i kind of wonder if if it's a woman who's kind of speaking for one of the kids um but the uh you know how do you educate people about this public health problem uh and this is a way to do it uh somebody uh asked for some young people vandalizing well coincidentally i actually have a film about that i have a lot of bus safety films that were made in pennsylvania i think they got a grant to make uh to make a bunch of bus films and this one is actually not about safety this one is actually about taking care of the bus this is old 23. enjoy this back is gonna have to be completely recovered huh well this patch didn't hold up i still say it's too good a bus to scrap just what would it cost to get 23 back on the road it's gonna cost about a hundred dollars a seat and there's paint for the inside plus all the labor checks what if we do the work ourselves what do you mean what if i get together with the kids and we supply the labor do you think with everything in tip top shape hurting would let us keep 23 going who's going to buy the materials we don't keep painting vinyl on hand well can we furnish the material that i'd have to clear with the boss hey jax telephone okay and there are strict guidelines as to what you can use can i look at the manual and see what's required if we can do it it sure could save the district some money might work i'm sure purden would be willing to listen i know he'd be interested in saving money hey where's 23. hey mr duggan where's our bus everybody on board and sit up front i'll tell you about it in just a minute [Music] [Music] you all want to listen up a second is this another safety lecture not this time the school district had to pull 23 out of service it wouldn't pass inspection some of the seats are torn beyond repair and the paint is badly chipped and scratched big deal the bus still runs good we didn't do it hold it wait a second i agree i talked to mr jacks at the maintenance shop and he told me that the bus is still mechanically safe yes [Music] how would you like to save old 23 for another couple of years well if we're willing to redecorate the inside ourselves at our cost the school district might let us put it back on the road and she'd be our boss for the most part yes oh it would be used like any other bus for field trips sports things like that but for the most part ours what color can we use any color you want however you want oranges blues pink you name it except we've got to use non-flammable no lead paint that's a safety regulation and no painting over the emergency door hey i saw this movie once about a bus it was painted all over in psychedelic colors rainbows spirals stars can we maybe paint the outside of the bus too yeah nope just the inside first of all the outside's okay second the law says that a school bus has to be this bright chrome yellow to attract the attention of other drivers are we gallery opposed to the seats ourselves yeah we sure are but i don't know how to upholster a seat neither do i but we could all learn together maybe some of your parents have reupholstered some old furniture and they could teach us as we go what do we use for fabric anything you want as long as wait a second anything as long as it's sturdy and fireproof another safety regulation well how about it you want to help me customize old 23 yeah [Applause] good tell you what if we get permission from the school district i'll send a letter to your parents explaining what we're up to i'll let you know tomorrow morning dr mason good morning bill i'd like you to meet jim dugan jim's a bus driver for the district nice to meet you dr mason how do you do jim i've been anxious to meet you oh sit down please an interesting idea you have here i don't believe i've heard anything quite like it before well i appreciate the chance to talk to you about it basically uh my riders and i would like to customize one of the district's buses number 23. i've checked with the maintenance shop and they've looked over the bus carefully structurally and mechanically it's still sound because of its age the district had it scheduled for replacement but i had to pull it out of service last friday yes bill i read your report the riders my riders and i kind of like the bus and we think we can save the district a few dollars if we customize the inside and keep it going for a couple of more years it is an unusual idea you are sincere about this i sure am and we can do it over a weekend have you thought of the safety requirements no outside paint no blocking any views no flammable fabrics of any kind that sort of thing jim's been through all that with me and with maintenance and we understand the requirements how much do you think an idea like this could save the school district a new bus could cost as much as 22 000 number 23 still a good buzz so if jim and his writers can keep it safely on the road for even one more year we could save almost two thousand dollars jim i think your idea has merit i think a project like this could be fun and it may even help stop some of this school bus vandalism you have permission to customize number twenty-three george put that one down over here [Music] kyle make sure you keep all the parts together okay all right [Applause] [Music] hey what's and customizing the seats oh yeah hey man we got a customized school bus sounds cool too bad i walk i never see it unless maybe get it for a game you won't believe it when you see it hey guys yeah old number 23 is unreal julie painted a huge daisy right in the middle of one of the walls and tony covered her bus seat over in wild blue vinyl and we have the mona lisa i mean man we had fun sounds like it hope we have fun tomorrow are you guys ready for jefferson well coach says so just a big game but oh man those guys are good they beat the pants off us the first time we played we're better now but don't hold your breath [Applause] who's that [Music] hey coach what do we do to get this rolling fun house i thought we got new buses for the games look you guys this is the only bus available so stop today give me one of those [Laughter] [Applause] [Applause] hey jim hello jonathan i understand you and your kids took 23 to the jefferson game yesterday yeah i know look jim i'm real sorry i saw the bus this morning a total mess must been a great win the kids won a tough game and they got carried away after the win they got a little wild i calm things down but by then it was too late i spent a weekend and the kids spent a weekend a lot of sweat and money and you and your guys blow it on one trip i'm sorry jim i can understand what it meant to you and your kids is there anything i can do i don't know i'll think on it there's got to be a way we can straighten things out but look jonathan when things get out of hand on a school bus people can get hurt sure 23 got a little beat up but your whole team could have been hurt i've got to talk to the kids this afternoon they've already seen the damage and they're pretty hot about it yeah i understand hey jim wait a second maybe i can help things out i've got time let's talk what have you got on your mind i don't care if you guys did beat jefferson what about our bus you know how many of us worked on that bus you know how long it took hey look we got to celebrate you know she won a big one you're letting loose yeah one run to win the game and one trip to wreck our bus oh come on terry you're talking about a school bus we won the game man again the game man what about our bus all right lay off the coach has already chewed us out about it fact is he thinks all his guys should help you guys fix it up yeah what do you mean some of us guys feel pretty bad about what happened you want to make things right coaches are to talk to your bus driver you guys really serious about this yeah bus yard next saturday deal come on [Music] jocks man um i uh i spent most of my uh grade school in high school life riding a school bus i didn't really get a license until i was in college um oh no i actually had a license but uh after i graduated from high school i got it but no i mostly rolled the school bus and would do homework on the school bus and saw all sorts of shenanigans on a school bus um my sister chimed in on one of the comments uh and was asking me we there was a song that we would sing when our school bus which was number two would would come and it was a variation on the here comes the king um budweiser song i won't sing it for you because i could just barely remember it but uh yeah that's that's what we used to do uh so i feel bad about the uh rats film um i feel bad that i uh portrayed all rats is bad uh film is uh it was a canadian tv show that's beloved by canadians i showed it once and people from canada were freaking out um it's part of a series called tales from riverbank and let's have a see you tomorrow bye so [Music] so on a quiet pleasant afternoon nothing at all was happening oh well nothing that is of a particularly active or strenuous nature the hamster was engaged in perhaps his second favorite occupation time time time the wrath was quietly whiling away the time reading a romantic novel well let's see big clean up for my friend oh just in case any of our friends drop over roderick why are we expecting them oh no but but it would be very nice if they came [Music] well my goodness hammy why don't we have a party oh roddy when why uh we'll send the invitations out right now oh body can i help the rat threw down his book and briskly walked over toward the typewriter stopping to ask the hamster who he would like to invite why all her friends roddy everyone who will fit into the house that is the eye tight roddy the rat tried to explain to his friend the the difficulties involved in using the machine and that it required a certain amount of skill but the hamster was not to be deterred and so roderick moved off to make way for him the rat was truly amazed at the way hemi tackled the job i believe you're supposed to sit at it not on it my friend with a vim and a vigor known only to hamsters he pounded away at the keyboard and the invitations rolled out at an incredible rate meantime the rat took his position at the little desk beside the typewriter and began to sign the invitations that his friend was typing the hamster sat back to admire his work justly proud but eventually there were simply no more invitations to type and many other things to be done so he set about doing them with a vengeance roderick proceeded with the invitations to the mailbox he uh considered taking the boat but then decided that it was a very fine day for a walk through the woods [Music] he hadn't gone far when he was stopped by a familiar sound [Music] good morning hornet uh would you care to join us in the party this evening be delighted to come mr rat but we're throwing a little swarm of our own tonight thank you very much [Music] a roderick nodded politely and proceeded through the forest yeah he asked the flowers and they replied that they would love to come but for really in no condition to travel roderick understood the bee was working so hard and buzzing so loudly that he did not even hear the rat calling him i say shouted ronnie we're throwing a party oh we workers don't have very much time for that kind of thing but we'd be glad to supply the honey the offer was accepted and roderick moved on then suddenly he stopped and looked very embarrassed i hear that you and hammy are giving a party tonight mr rat roderick stammered well uh yes and we would like to have you dear only only you know that i'd never be able to get through your front door well now that's all right roddy i understand now please don't feel badly about it say hello to hammy for me there was a spicy flavor in the air that made the trip seem very short and with a leap and a pound roderick found himself at the hollow stump which served as a mailbox for the community he deposited the invitations then dashed back to help hammy prepare for the party in the kitchen the hamster was having a ball everything you could think of was on the table waiting its turn to be mixed into the cake well i see things are well underway my friend anything i can do to help the hamster replied that he would like to do it all by himself thank you but roderick would be welcome to watch if he chose so the rats had a grandstand seat for perhaps the most amusing demonstration of cake making ever seen along the riverbank [Music] so [Music] so [Music] uh hemi are you sure you need so much flour why uh the last time i baked a cake i have me please my friend please do control yourself oh buddy oh so exciting i just get carried away oh my now what have you got in mind well i i i've used everything but the kitchen sink and i thought just for good measure we might try the rad explained that this was just an expression used by some people who'd never known hamsters and suggested that the batter was quite well seasoned without it in fact he said the mix looked as ready for the oven as it probably ever would and so hammy rewarded himself by licking not only the bowl but his own paws as well [Music] the tantalizing smells that came from the oven set hammy's nose twitching as it had never twitched before well i think it's about time my friend well before roderick had finished speaking the hamster had the oven door open and was sniffing away at the contents bring it out we'll see what kind of a cook you are old boy said the rat well hammy needed no urging he was into the cake as though he had not eaten for days amy i thought the cake was for the party cautioned roderick oh roddy forgive me but i just had to taste it [Music] the task before them was a discouraging one indeed oh my we will never get this all cleaned up in time for the party moaned hammy the red assured his friend that there was no such word as never the hamster struggled with the broom and managed to clear up most of the debris in short order alrighty i i've always wanted to dust may i may i please desk the [Music] avere room the hamster might make her very fine duster indeed so hammy started in and the dust fairly flew ahead of him there now what can i do next well you might try scrubbing the floor suggested rat who had uh suddenly realized that the soapy water might be hard on his hands hammy explained to his friend that that he was an expert in scrubbing floors and it would be quite an order for roderick to sit out and rest for a while while he carried on but things didn't work out exactly as he had planned oh oh i'm sorry roddy i i guess i overestimated my own strength roderick had proceeded with the final part of the job he was perched on top of a very tall stepladder hanging paper streamers and lanterns to give the room a gay and festive air the hamster watched with great interest can i help roddy oh no my friend replied the rat who enjoyed this type of work it's it's just a matter of getting the right bit of paper in the right place i i think i can manage roddy uh do be careful it's it's awfully high i'm quite used to it oh ronnie please don't fall ronnie mr hamster you're just an old fuss budget why are you no look how funny don't lean over so far the wrath was a sorry sight and looked very much ashamed of himself for all his overconfidence a few moments ago are you uh um al all right my friend he asked rather sheepishly oh i i'm fine roddy i i hope you didn't hurt yourself and he moved out from under the pile of paper toward the raft roderick assured hammy that the only damage had been to his pride and that if nothing else he had learned a great lesson from the accident and hoped that hammy had to and hammy assured roderick that he was always learning great lessons from him and for this reason watched him very closely at all times well upon hearing this the rat resolved to be much more careful in future about falling off ladders and other things after mutually consoling one another the two friends started in again a very reserved rat on top of the ladder and a very helpful and devoted hamster dashing hither and yarn below getting together all of the things that the rat needed to complete the decorations eventually the room took shape even as hammy watched it was transformed before his very eyes into a sort of fairy palace food for a banquet was laid out in the table with every conceivable kind of thing to eat and brightly burning candles gave the little home just the right atmosphere for the party the animals arrived and conversation began games were played and everybody talked and laughed and had a lovely time finally when the food was served they dug in with true animal fervor [Music] the hamster and the rat congratulated each other on a highly successful evening and it is here that we must leave them now or it's getting late in the tiny house and it looks as if the party may continue for some time [Music] so [Music] so feel free to have a party with the rodents in your life thanks everybody for coming out i will see you hopefully again tomorrow bye so you
