oops oops i hope it wasn't black too long that's the problem with these silent films is i don't get a cue um when the film has ended and if i look away and do something which i often am doing because i'm i have a little add going on um then i miss the end so my apologies i'm skip alzheimer uh and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show thanks for tuning in today that last film was from a uh friends uh at the oregon archive who we've been scanning their films and um this was a teaching film that showed the logging process lots of widow makers i would say lots of opportunities for someone to lose a limb or a life in the logging process in the sawmill process in the pulp and paper making process and of course in the um press room the uh the giant printing presses definitely widowmakers um so on that happy note um we're watching some old 16 millimeter films uh from my collections and from some friends collections uh this next film is encyclopedia britannica and it's the fundamentals of acoustics and if you dug the illustrations and animations in the last film this one is awesome it's it's really kind of great so here's fundamentals of acoustics now unfortunately this film had a lot of surface noise so there's a little bit of noise reduction on it and so it kind of goes wow wow but otherwise it would just be lots and lots of so here's fundamentals of acoustics [Music] acoustics is the science that deals with sounds in this film we will interpret some of the basic principles of acoustics invisible waves of sound behave much like visible waves of water when water is disturbed waves form that move away from the center of disturbance the waves move until they strike an obstacle and are reflected back or until their energy is dissipated sound waves travel in a similar manner sound in air travels about 1100 feet a second since light waves move much faster than sound waves the cause of a sound may be seen before the sound is heard reflected sounds are called echoes echoes particularly indoors are not distinct because the successive reflected waves interfere with the original waves upon striking an obstacle such as a wall part of the wave's energy changes into heat heart passes through the obstacle and part is reflected the dash lines represent reflected waves that are nearly dissipated you have been hearing this explanation under nearly ideal conditions if the walls of a room are lined with a hard non-absorbing material they reflect most of the sound waves the sound in a room of this kind is distorted because the reflected waves pass back and forth before the wall many times before they are displaced if the walls are covered with some thick porous material they absorb much of the energy of the sound wave sound produced under this condition lacks the live quality that usually characterizes indoor speech the live quality is lost because there is so little reflection a curved surface in an auditorium may be detrimental to good room acoustics because it reflects and focuses the sound waves much as a curved mirror reflects and focuses light weights here echoes follow the original sound by an appreciable time interval and interfere with clear reception such an obvious structural defect can of course be avoided in the construction of a building often there are other conditions that affect listening enjoyment to study some of them acoustical engineers may use the oscilloscope this instrument pictures invisible sound waves by translating them into visual patterns then the visual patterns can be studied here for example is the pattern of a group of woodwinds [Music] musical sounds produce regular patterns noises produce irregular patterns even at low intensity noises tend to irritate the listeners musical sounds tend to be enjoyable if the study of sound wave patterns reveals undesirable components steps may be taken to control them [Music] audible sounds are transmitted to the brain by the ear sound waves first reach the outer ear this is the part of the ear that collects sound waves and directs them to the eardrum changes in pressure caused by sound waves affect the eardrum as they would affect any other diaphragm so the pressure changes caused by longitudinal waves of sound in air or in fluid cause the eardrum to vibrate just beyond the eardrum is a cavity called the middle ear in this part of the ear are the three small bones that transmit vibrations of the eardrum to the inner ear the inner ear which is spiral in shape is filled with fluid when the bones of the middle ear vibrate the vibrations are transmitted to this fluid within the spiral shaped inner ear is a membrane in which nerve endings of the auditory nerve are located vibrations in the fluid excite these nerve endings and transmit nerve impulses along the auditory nerve to the brain when the sound wave impulses arrive at the brain the person experiences the sensation of hearing the healthy normal human ear is sensitive to a wide variety of sounds we can represent the range of human hearing on a graph normal hearing ranges in audible intensity or loudness from the faint rustle of leaves represented by the lowest part of the curve to the boom of distant artillery represented at the top in terms of audible frequency the average person hears from about 20 cycles to about 16 000 cycles that's considerably more than the writ of the piano scale the range or area of hearing varies between individuals as shown by the zone between the two outer sets of lines modern electrical reproduction approaches the audible frequency limits of the original sound employed when normal amplification is reduced in volume hearing is affected notice the change of quality and speech caused by this unnatural volume eliminating the lower frequencies makes another change in sound this causes an unnaturalness particularly in the vowels eliminating all frequencies above 3000 cycles causes another important change this change in audible frequencies affects the consonants and finally here is sound with both high and low frequencies eliminated this kind of distortion produces a very noticeable effect on musical sounds as well as on speech [Music] foreign in singing the overtones of the highest note may reach about 7 500 vibrations a second these sound waves of course are audible the oscilloscope can also reveal sounds that are not audible to our ears one way to produce inaudible sounds is to use an audio oscillator first the dials are turned through the range of audible sounds now the oscillator is producing a 30 000 cycle sound we can't hear it but this is how it looks on the oscilloscope screen and here's a 50 000 cycle sound such frequencies above the range of hearing are supersonic or ultrasonic sounds supersonic devices called sonar are used to detect objects underwater wartime detection may lead to the destruction of enemy submarines in the air the supersonic sound barrier has been overcome so that speeds greater than the speed of sound are now attained acoustical research progresses on many fronts for example this room called an anechoic chamber is constructed to absorb nearly all sound waves the absorbent materials are packed into cones in this room engineers can test the acoustical properties of microphones loudspeakers and other equipment with almost no interference from echoes the results of acoustical research can be applied to all kinds of situations involving sound principles of acoustics are of particular significance for it is through the application of these principles that sounds are transmitted from their sources to the listener yikes sorry about that i knew it was bad but i didn't know i got that yikes um and i the noise uh suppression filter probably didn't help it probably created some sort of weird slapback that made it even more all right um somebody's talking about ed asner um i guess related to lou grant but ed asner was in some encyclopedia britannica films and then somebody said oh well uh ed asner was also in you are there coincidentally i have an episode of you are there uh threaded up here now this is from the 70s so i think ed asner was already on his um on his way and um the you are there episodes tend to have upcoming stars or stars that are kind of going down um in this one let's see which uh celebrities you can find in this enjoy [Music] nr16020 to tower how do this is not the first woman astronaut getting ready to go to the moon she is amelia earhart the foremost pilot of her day who not only conquered frontiers of the sky but proved that a woman could do many of the things that only men had tried on july 2nd 1937 amelia earhart began a flight which was to end in mystery a mystery still waiting to be solved july 2nd 1937 the mystery of amelia earhart [Applause] [Music] it is july 2nd 1937. five years ago in 1932 amelia earhart burst into world headlines when she became the first woman to fly a plane across the atlantic ocean her present goal to fly around the world at its broadest band the equator more than a month ago amelia earhart along with navigator fred noonan took off in pursuit of that goal today they have reached lay new guinea not far from the australian continent in front of them is the pacific ocean which they plan to fly in three stages first new guinea to howland island then howland island to hawaii and then to the united states the first leg of this flight from new guinea to howland promises to be the most difficult we now take you to lay new guinea all things are as they were then except you are there well how's the weather look about the thing should i load my things yeah okay no shoots hey i got a few personal things in here uh that silver bowl take my advice hang on to that bowl you show up and open without a present for your bride the marriage is over hey just got started hang on okay i'll turn the shoot in walter this is david cohen at lea new guinea it's 9 40 in the morning here and the skies are slowly clearing yesterday amelia earhart and fred noonan decided to wait for better weather but finally they decided to delay their takeoff to howland island miss earhart yes you think you'll be flying today just waiting for the latest weather report if nothing threatening turns up probably go you seem to be eager to be on your way well we've been on this flight over a month now i'd like to get home miss earhart there is a rumor that you're performing some kind of secret government work on this flight and are you trying to stick to an official schedule nope i make my own schedules i do want to be back in the states by the fourth of july why one of my favorite holidays like to spend it with my husband and my friends why have you selected howland island as your next destination well it's just the right distance between here in hawaii but it's a very small island ah but there's a coast guard cutter standing right right off there for the very best radio equipment i'll have no problem homing in on them and if i do i'll whistle whistle well to get a bearing on an aircraft the ground station must maintain continuous radio transmission with that aircraft i ordinarily whistle you wouldn't whistle for us you're right i wouldn't basically then you'll be relying on your radio voice and morse code transmission and reception just voice neither mr noonan nora reads morse code what we're going to rely on is good navigation you've decided not to take parachutes well they'd be useless over water and we'll be going over water all the way now if you will excuse me five hundred one thousand fifteen hundred two thousand twenty five hundred twenty 600 and 50. this is david culhane cbs news les new guinea we switch now to the coast guard cutter itasca at howland island [Music] transmission completed sir right we should be getting an answer from san francisco any moment now mr black commander i'd like to talk about that high frequency direction finder oh i uh put a 24-hour watch on it and there's an open circuit here if you want to talk to them something coming in from san francisco sir walter this is morally safer in the radio room of the coast guard cutter itasca anchored one mile offshore of howland island a few moments ago a test transmission was sent to san francisco in order to verify radio signal strength and the two men waiting to hear the results of that test are commander w.k thompson commanding officer of the itasca and mr r.b black a field representative of the department of interior they're assigned to coordinate all activities in the pacific on behalf of amelia earhart's flight san francisco to the itasca message received signal strength three please acknowledge good acknowledge and then switch key transmissions to seven five zero zero kilo cycles well they're receiving us very well in san francisco i'm sure they aren't commander unfortunately miss earhart's radio receiver isn't quite that powerful yes but she won't be quite that far away either now if you'll excuse me i have some details to take care of mr black yes in your conversation with commander thompson you mentioned a high frequency direction finder yes the navy asked me to install it on holland island it's designed to pick up miss erhart's sending frequency so we can get a bearing on it did miss erhardt ask you to get that equipment no actually 100 questions no special radio equipment be used to home in honor why was that i don't know but uh we thought it was important to uh bring one in anyhow for emergency coverage oh commander thompson one question isn't it unusual for the department of interior to be involved in a private flight even a flight as important as this one howling island is under the jurisdiction of the department of interior but with a coast guard yes it is highly unusual riggs the man who will be in direct communication with amelia earhart is radio man first class stephen c riggs radio man riggs what exactly will you be doing well i've turned my key transmitter here to 7500 kilo cycles and my voice transmitter here to five kilo cycles and i'll be transmitting by key and by voice every half hour on the hour and a half hour and i'll be listening to miss earhart's transmissions on this receiver she usually transmits uh quarter two and quarter past the hour you're gonna be a busy man i'm looking forward to it i saw the lady once in hawaii a couple years ago just before she broke the hawaii to oakland run she's quite a quite a flyer she's quite a woman have you ever spoken to her oh no no i'm going to just on this radio but that's good enough for me just a few moments ago miss earhart's plane moved down the 3 000 foot runway at la new guinea it became airborne just some 150 feet short of the cliffs which marked the end of that airfield among those waiting for news of this flight is a man with a very special interest george palmer putnam amelia earhart's husband and personal manager we switch now to oakland california cbs news correspondent hal walker is there well i appreciate everything you've done no no i'll be staying right here until she lands at holland right good thank you mr putnam have the tensions in the pacific influenced either the timing or the course of this flight tensions well japan is said to be building up its strength on certain islands well i don't know anything about that she's not doing any kind of government work government work intelligence certainly not but you'd sit down with u.s government representatives before this flight of course when you fly around the world you need government cooperation from this air heart is a private citizen so the choice of holland island has nothing to do with the international situation these decisions aren't made lightly for every hour in the air miss earhart and i spend 50 hours planning talking evaluating this era heart takes careful notes before during and after every flight as a matter of fact these notes will be the basis for a series of radio broadcasts that i just signed a contract for miss earhart will appear personally and discuss various aspects of her flight now we've limited ourselves to magazines and syndicated newspaper features in the past but this time radio will bring the story to the world with greater impact and immediacy and eventually of course there'll be a book perhaps several books thank you mr putnam this is hal walker cbs news oakland california it's now 12 hours since amelia earhart left new guinea the aircraft is out of radio contact should be for several more hours while we're waiting we'd like to bring you an interview taped shortly before she left australia talking with amelia earhart is cbs news correspondent richard c hodland ms earhart you've had quite a welcome here in australia were you surprised well people have been very kind to me everywhere we landed they've really been very warm they've been very friendly that's been one of the most gratifying parts of the whole flight you've now finished almost three quarters of your flight around the world how does this compare would you say with your earlier flights well it's been very difficult we sometimes i can't remember what city or what country i'm in when i wake up but fred and i are pretty tough and the aircraft has been holding up beautifully you've been a nurse a teacher and a social worker why did you want to fly i suppose i wanted to prove that there's nothing about a woman that makes her inferior to a man as a pilot but then i started flying and well it's exhilarating i can't imagine living without it i feel at home in the air i'm sorry to interrupt that interview but we just received word from the itasca that they possibly picked up a transmission from amelia earlier a few minutes ago a faint voice was picked up here which might have been amelia earhart's since then we've all been listening but there's been nothing but heavy static that could have been another ship cloudy that's her that's got to be her you heard check her position in eta hi sir khaqq from itasca kha qq from itasca what is your position when do you expect to reach howland itasca has heard you please acknowledge this broadcast looks like maybe we won't be needing that high frequency direction finder of yours excuse me commander what is your position what is your eta at howland please acknowledge okay get back on that phone rigs hi sir kha qq from itasca khaqq from itasca itasca has heard your phone what is your position when do you expect to reach howland please acknowledge khaqq from itasca what is your position when do you expect to reach howland please acknowledge sir what is it race she can't hear us we can hear her okay but she can't hear us at all it is now six o'clock in the morning at howland island amelia earhart's lockheed electra has been airborne 20 hours though there's fuel aboard the aircraft for at least another four hours a serious communications problem seems to be developing for a report here is cbs news correspondent morley safer on the itasca walter for over two hours now there has been no word from amelia earhart mr black has gone to howland as lieutenant george felix the itasca navigation officer the task will swiffle into life about 200 miles out call black on howland and tell him to check that direction finder and see if they can pick up a bearing on her are you receiving the whistle did you i see yes sir call in if you get a bearing [Music] they didn't get a bearing she didn't whistle long enough briggs get back on that phone teller to use numbers and to stay on longer hi sir khaqq for my tasca khaqq from itasca cannot get bearing signal again using numbers khaqq from itasca signal longer using numbers go ahead please go ahead please [Applause] [Music] standing by in burbank california is cbs news correspondent alan jackson with the vice president in charge of design for lockheed aircraft alan are you aware of the situation developing at howland island yes walter we've been following it very closely here sir can lockheed explain the radio problem ms earhart seems to be having well i could only guess uh uh that radio was uh originally equipped with a 250 foot real type antenna uh which was discarded miami discarded yes uh miss earhart and uh and fred noonan decided it was more trouble than it was worth if they should be forced to land in the ocean to ditch how long will the aircraft stay afloat well here's the same plane it's a sturdy craft as you can see uh huzza's equipped with uh buoys and uh special air compartments it it should stay afloat for quite a long time but there are several hours of fuel still aboard uh we provided special oversized tanks right thank you sir we switched now back to the uss tesco earhart to italy we must be on you but cannot see you gas is running slow then unable to reach you by radio we are flying at altitude of 1 000 feet that message you just heard from miss earhart was the first received in almost an hour signal strength indicates that the aircraft is quite close but it still has not been located we are circling but cannot hear you go ahead on seven five zero zero kilo cycles well they still can't pick her up or on scheduled time all right send out that homing signal on seven five zero zero killer cycles why sir she's gotta hear this he's gotta hold in on this hey [Music] if we only could lady [Music] see if you can get her to speak again on three one zero five kilo seconds aye aye sir k a t h q for my task must hear you on three one zero five go ahead you know that direction finder isn't picking up anything they must have run out of power and there's no generator i tasked it from earhart i tested from airheart we are in line zero kilo cycles [Music] north and south but where all right switch to six two one zero kilo cycles and no transmission when she comes in pick up that bearing i said switching to six two one zero there's nothing sir i asked her to speak again on three one zero five kilo cycles aye aye sir k-h-a-q-q from my task good transmission that's all we need one more good transmission do not hear you on six two one zero do not hear you on six two one zero maintain signal on three one zero five go ahead on three one zero five your signal okay on three one zero five go ahead with position on three one zero five no further word was heard from amelia earhart a huge air and sea search ended 30 days later when she and fred noonan were declared lost by the united states navy many elements of amelia earhart's last flight are still a mystery today why was tiny howl and island chosen as her landing place was she on a secret government mission why didn't she know about the direction finder how well did it work why didn't she want any equipment honing in on her and why if the ditched plane could have stayed afloat for many hours was nothing heard from amelia earhart and fred noonan after 8 a.m when there was still some fuel aboard all these questions plus the fact that no trace of amelia earhart fred noonan or the ill-fated electorate has ever been found have created one of the great air mysteries of all time the date was july 2 1937. what sort of day was it a day like all days filled with those events that alter and illuminate our time and you were there [Music] great young richard dreyfuss practicing his uh his form that would later show up in jaws and close encounters etc um yeah i love those they have a great because it's like 71 they have a great 70s vibe even though they're sent in these different time periods um and it features lots of actors and then all of our favorite cbs correspondents that we remember from 60 minutes and and other other things it's kind of great okay so uh i've been working with a photo stock footage researcher who has done lots and lots of work with pbs's american experience and all these other things and we've been slowly going through a collection of stuff that he's gotten from the national archives so he doesn't have he has a collection of films himself but these are um films that he got from the national archive and yeah a lot it's a lot of war stuff it's a lot of um atomic safety stuff well not atomic safety but atomic blasts like we have a whole lot of documentation of the crossroads um test the bikini atoll um and some some of it's interesting but i haven't felt like i needed to share anything yet until i stumble across this today this is a film that i saw at a film conference and it blew my mind we often talk about how a drug education film could potentially be just an advertisement for drugs basically if you show it to the kids at the right period of time they will look at that and say like huh that's really interesting my life could be uh changed by something like that because i'm bored um and so this is an example of that this film is whacked out and this was government made it's called curious alice and of course uses the alice in wonderland uh metaphor which was very much used by jefferson airplane um and was crazy trippy and i don't think that the cautionary aspect of curious alice makes up for the fact that it's so trippy so here we go curious alice [Applause] once upon a time in a famous story a girl named alice got very curious about a little white rabbit who passed by she followed him and soon found herself falling down a very deep hole into a strange place called wonderland wait i'm late i'm late too late nowadays there are still girls and boys whose curiosity leads them to strange places what a curious paw i can't tell where this is going i'm late i'm lee i'm too late [Music] american cabinet what's it doing here aspirin anxiety gives me when i'm sick prescriptions mommy has to get those from a doctor i wonder whose they are oh cigarettes i know they're not good for you curious liquor a liquor cabinet that's not good for kids either but but oh maybe cigarettes and alcohol are like medicines i didn't ever think of that they're all things that make you feel different that changes curiouser and curiouser what kind of place is this oh wow mommy if the doctor wouldn't have anything to do with this this stuff just looks like he could hurt you oh that must be where that rabbit went but i'm too big [Applause] if i could change myself [Music] gee i don't know maybe maybe if well here goes oh oh wow [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh wow [Music] it's weird everything's different even me i'm not [Music] and today being all different sizes is confusing i don't know how i'm supposed to be anymore how do you want to be no i guess i don't want to be that kind of pie why do you what what kind of question is that you're just a kid aren't you sure i'm still growing up and i'm supposed to ask questions why does it make you so angry don't you know why you do it i'm not angry i'm not angry i'm not angry but you haven't answered my questions either [Applause] everybody at home is probably worried about me by now i don't think i'll tell them everything that's happened i'll stay just a little heroin and it could mean habit it must be hard to write what what's happening look the jack of hearts is trying to escape and he's even trying to get the others to go with him friends friends who's he scary you just kind of come all apart inside well it's very nice of you to offer them to me offered them who offered them these are mine [Applause] [Music] oh i'm glad you're waking up i'm not oh my new face do you use a barbiturate sleeping pill oh no should i no why in the world would you want to wind up why is it he's a blue bird like like a bottle cap you shouldn't waste time with riddles and haven't got any answers listen i can tell you more about time in seconds than you can hear in years like time time what time is it what should i know time time six o'clock tea time time to take a pill dynamite dynamite keep this under your hat friend but she doesn't know what we're doing yes i do you live here in this beautiful place it could be wonderland and all you do is take those pep pills sleeping lsd marijuana heroin do you know what you're doing what are we doing time is it six o'clock tee time time to take a pill why just take a few impediments and you can be like me or freak apart for tender brains by taking lsd sleeping pills are beautiful heroin is king everything is clearer now just let me do my thing you may blow your mind completely but won't you take the chance won't you you can understand my excitement and finding this in uh some of the film films that i was going through with this guy um it is uh it's over the top it's not as depressing as say dead is dead um and there are some other drug films that i have that that are even more uh heavy-handed ham-fisted uh hammer to the head but this one kind of skirts it a little bit there's certainly a downside that's talked about but honestly um you know someone who's looking to escape man this is a wonderful uh introduction to the world of drugs um and how to deal with that 19 early 70s boredom um yeah anyways uh
