[Music] [Music] bob huh the radio still doesn't play right huh that's funny what's funny well a guy signs up for six years in the navy i see you weeks of training electronics and still a gal can't get him to fix her radio i'll fix it before i leave great [Music] dear bob thanks for fixing the radio it was very nice of you it plays just fine i think [Music] you're a very [Music] special man [Music] it is pleasant to agree with an attractive girl and in the case of bob wilson and hundreds more like him the navy does agree these are very special people filling very special needs they are the ones who make it possible for today's ships to see to speak [Music] to hear to compute to fight with the weapons of modern war on or under the sea very special men indeed members of the advanced electronic field vital parts of the electronic nervous system of the modern navy all hands to quarters for muster inspection and instruction all hands to quarters for muster inspection and instruction all right man we've got division duty today jones you're easy duty division and good weapons department president california very well gentlemen the day we have been anticipating a rise tomorrow you inform your leading petty officers that zero 800 observers will arrive to conduct an operational readiness inspection as you are well aware an ori is an annual competitive event used to great us against other ships of our class cunningham is the best ship in a squadron let's prove it questions post [Music] operational readiness inspection the time when every area every piece of equipment is measured against the unrelenting standard of combat readiness when you and your team prove the day-by-day efficiency of your own efforts martin get up to the bridge and check out the captain's radar repeater okay right away you all set on the main power supply check out graves looks all right to me reads okay on a test equipment good let's keep it that way and that's the way it goes here and in the nerve center of it all the combat information center where all the systems come together where each serves the other and all serve the total organism that is the ship itself yes martin what is it maybe you better have a look at the captain's repeater yourself something wrong no i don't think so all right let's take a look looks all right to me it's just that it's team to come up a little slow that's all well it's nothing to sweat over martin is there something else on your mind i was wondering if you might have a little time when we're through with our checkout it's uh a personal matter we're just about checked out coffee on the mess deck say half an hour fine combat information center where when the chips are down the ship is fought from where each electronic system feeds the others and all together feed the demands of the ship itself to carry out its mission cic where you and the other very special men the ones able to analyze test repair and maintain the electronic nervous system find a man's place doing a man's job [Music] how you doing martin thanks for coming down wilson glad to be of help if i can what's on your mind it's about my future in the navy when i enlisted i figured i'm putting in four years and then getting out i had qualifying marks for the advanced electronics field and my counselor even suggested it but but six years seemed like a long time right right but after working with the guys in the radar gang i'd like to put in for the full treatment and you'd like to have some idea of what you're getting in for is that it well after all you've been there in that case let's begin in the beginning okay if you had gone in at the time of your recruit training martin you would have extended your four-year enlistment to six years why because to develop the kind of man this navy needs that's the required time as you know you could come out wearing an electronic technician rating like mine a data systems rating a fire control technician rating or his missile counterpart whether you hack one of those or instead a gunner's mate missilemen rating a rating as sonar technician a missile technician finally a communications technician the accent is on one word technician not a glorified screwdriver mechanic or repairman but a man qualified to use test equipment to analyze a problem and to make the necessary repairs or adjustments and you get a top flight education in electronics one that you can't buy anywhere else in the world oh yes you get something else too call it challenge you'll get it first in your a-school instruction all the way from initial theory to practical work most of it on the same kind of gear you'll find on shipboard one thing you will learn in fast the men doing the teaching are men who have been there through school in the fleet and most of them called back to instruct the way i could be myself or you could be someday they have only one goal in mind to make you able to do one of the big jobs that this navy needs done they know that when the chips are down your discipline judgment and knowledge are going to be the things upon which the skipper of the ship will often have to depend and when you move on into your advanced schooling you'll specialize in communications or in data systems the brains for all the other systems or radar you work with the same gear you find aboard ship and you get the same kinds of problems months of them use the test equipment to find the problem and analyze it study it out in the schematic get it operating again again and again until you can do it in your sleep or the way we might have to do it in the ori tomorrow or in actual combat conditions it sounds like a rugged course it is but it's well planned do your day's work every day and you stand a good chance and you can go a lot further from advanced school you can move into one of the seed schools for training in specialized operations or maintenance another eight to 16 weeks so that when you are ready for the fleet you have the finest electronic education available anywhere today slice it any way you want you've got everything going for you a career in the navy and an education good enough to put you well up the ladder if you should decide to go back to civilian life later on bob could go on for quite a while and if he did here is one of the major points he would make as made by the officer in charge of the school you men are here because you are the best the navy has the best the country has to offer to answer the question every one of you in this room who completes his work here and maintains a clean military record should be a first-class petty officer at the end of his six-year enlistment some will make it sooner than that the navy is not only willing but anxious to promote you it has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into the finest electronic equipment it needs men to keep it running as it was designed to run you are those men you can move up faster in this field than in any other field in the navy you may become eligible for a college program sponsored by the navy leading to a commission it might interest you to know that the majority of the officers in this school came up through the enlisted ranks all of us at one time or another sat in a room such as this and the opportunity is available to you the only limitation is the limitation that you place on yourselves you take on a big responsibility to yourself to your shipmates to your commanding officer to the navy and to your country you're going to work hard because if you do you find out one thing martin that nothing but yourself stands between you and any goal that you choose more than anyone else the navy wants you to succeed well there's just one thing bugging me yes can i hack it can i make it i thought you were going to ask something new every man who begins the advanced electronic training course asks himself the same thing you well you've already shown through your test that you're qualified to join a select group of very special men and if they've hacked it there's no reason in the world why you shouldn't good luck [Music] oh yeah [Music] people have a lot of names for ships but to those who know and work them a ship is an organism grown to do a special job and the way that organism works depends on the men who worker for without the men a ship is a lifeless thing with them it is an eager willing part of an overall capability called the navy see where the ship is going is a primary requirement with radar eyes here backed up by other eyes here in the central nervous system through which all information must flow from the air from under the sea from hostile and friendly elements in this operation information coordinated used and distributed to the entire organism aye sir right away martin yes stand by the phones the bridge repeater is giving trouble okay electronic control shifting phones you wish there had been no trouble but as you move toward the bridge you figure the problem sort out the possible answers and alternatives you wonder is this a true breakdown or is it a test set up by the inspectors you will never know the answer to that one you hope it is an adjustment it is up to you to know you have seen this before it is an adjustment not overhauled or repaired and you work and you work quickly and well you know what you're doing once again the ship has eyes to see with we'll function properly now sir that was real fast service wilson thank you as the ori wears on the nervous system functions as it should seeing at long range at intermediate range at target range for approaching aircraft answering the attack problem with information computerized calculated in microseconds to meet the airborne threat preparing to fight back through electronic information supplied by gunfire control [Music] bearing its weapons against undersea attack sensed and calculated by the electronic nerves of the ship and coordinating the maneuvers with other ships through the voice of electronics radio [Music] and when the operational readiness inspection is over secure the gear put it on standby you know that your ship is ready to meet any situation and you wonder wonder if your ship will wear the navy e for competence because if it does you know that a lot of the credit goes to a team of very special men electronics men men with a great responsibility in today's and tomorrow's navy and opportunities even greater opportunities open to you now today [Music] we missed you at the beach this weekend everyone says hello thanks again for fixing the radio i still think [Music] you're a very special man [Music] so quaint writing a letter um the courtship has has changed uh radically um hey i'm skip alzheimer of av geeks uh welcome to our lunchtime streaming event uh we've been doing this for a while this is in in the fourth week and i appreciate you guys joining us and hanging out and having your lunch and watching some of these old films that uh i've collected and thankfully have digitized so we have thousands of films that i've digitized i'm not at the archive which has 27 000 films over the years we've been working diligently to digitize a lot of the collection um but we've still only done like maybe three three thousand films so we've got a ways to go anywho that last film was a very special man which was a navy film to encourage uh their sailors to potentially pursue a career in electronics and to re-enlist and i have a couple of films that deal with that that concept of what while you're in the in the military how you can advance your career and and look to to be a career military person um so that was entertaining he fixed that that woman's radio okay so um quite accidentally i ended up programming a lot of films that have songs so i don't know what it was i just was like oh i want to do this one i want to do this one like oh these all have songs in them so this next one i try to show a film about food this one is kind of about food it's brought to you by a baby formula manufacturer but it's about nutrition so here we go and it's got lots of singing and dancing and it is totally from the 80s so enjoy uh eat good feel good this message brought to you by meat johnson nutritional division the makers of infamil and prosobi because we care about what you eat and how you feel [Music] oh hi we were just going to have a snack whoa wait a minute what have you got there a candy bar i tell you what steve what i'll trade you this apple for that candy bar no way i want that candy bar all right yeah okay what do you want to be when you grow up a baseball player a baseball player huh well you'll have to be really strong and healthy to be a good player don't you think that's right you do and this apple is a lot better for you than that so what's it going to be steve the apple [Music] eating right doesn't mean you can't snack it just means being a smart snacker picking foods that are nutritious with plenty of vitamins and minerals and fiber like apples instead of ones with lots of sugar and fat which can mean lots of calories and you know that sweet sticky snacks can cause cavities another reason to snack smart i know it may sound complicated but it's really easy as a b c abc one two three oh after school i get a feeling in my middle feels kind of empty and a crowd just a little it's my tummy talking cause it wants a little [Music] brownies and candies not for you not for me and cookies and cakes and lollipops bubble gum sweet rolls and soda pop no no when it comes to there are good ones just cause they're good for you don't think they're not fun good snacks are smart snacks so why not try some smart ones [Music] popcorn bananas and celery good for you good for me oranges and tomato juice have vitamin c carrot sticks are low in calories and raisins and nuts are high in energy when it comes to snacks there are good ones just because they're good for you don't mean they are fun i'm a smart snack person i stack smart [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey everybody gather round come on around gonna show you a thing or two i'm gonna teach you about snacking that's what i'm gonna do there once was a young guy named pete who wanted an afternoon treat give me brownie said pete or anything sweet [Music] but sweet raisins make much better eats why you've got a baby cocoon when baby gets hungry boo hoo she's depending on you for nutritious food when you can't breastfeed there's formula too thank you now we all know that we should eat better so let's follow these rules to the letter avoid sugars and fats and calories that might make you gain weight you'll regret her ah that doesn't rhyme they can't all be good rhymes okay people let me demonstrate a little sleight of hand or should i say light of hand i'm gonna make these nutrient weak foods disappear just like that [Applause] now [Music] i'm gonna give you people all these nutrient rich foods and i want you guys to make them disappear now how are you gonna do that huh [Applause] very funny [Music] [Music] smart snacks win every time and you can be a winner too just avoid foods high in sugar and fat and low in nutritional value like potato chips and candy bars soda pop caramel corn and be careful not to add too much sugar and honey butter and margarine to what you're eating and teach your children and teenagers good snacking habits there's nothing easier than keeping fresh fruits and vegetables cheese and crackers around the house snacking smart exercising it's all part of feeling great now if you'll excuse me it's time to do my exercise [Music] so i can imagine that one of those dancers on the resume it says you know did a dancing opening for baby formula uh public service announcement it's good work when you can get it um so i can imagine one of the answers on the resume i have to mute my uh volume otherwise i'll start freaking out anyways so that is part of a series i have a couple of films uh in that series that talk about different aspects of nutrition that one was about snacking healthy um i have one about calcium one about iron i think another one too much escapes me but um yeah so there's some music in there and there's some awesome costumes uh this next film is uh is fascinating to me because it is also a commercial but it kind of looks to be a bigger thing excuse me um basically it's made by the arrow shirt company and it's trying to bridge the generation gap that was happening in the in the 60s in the uh late 60s uh in the early 70s and it's also i think part of a promotional campaign that arrow did to try to also bridge that gap like arrow was popular among one generation but the next generation didn't really care so how do you market to them and uh what's also fascinating about this is the song the song you will recognize and what i did is some research determined that this song was written before the popular version that you've all heard and it's written by the same guy but the lyrics are different so enjoy replay [Music] down [Music] [Music] the children are confused not enough parent supervision far more liberty allowed to the younger generation i don't think they respect anybody yeah i don't understand them i had much more fun i had much more clean fun wholesome and it was fun all the way through i don't consider it dancing at all [Music] i think it's just shaking your body [Music] [Music] they look uncapped not to the shoulders they're not in curls it's just like a lion has a mane they can't look like a man i don't like the long hair probably because i don't have any i stand quite a few good songs today popular songs but not the type that the beatles or any of those organizations i've never liked them i understand they're supposed to be good musicians that was their thing as they call it today they had to have that long hair and something guitar c to make a living i think they're a rotten luck too much noise [Applause] i don't like the way out uh uh fashions they don't send me very much oh they're crazy i think it's about time that men started being more colorful and i think i'd like to move back the way it is now is different from the way it was before or is it i'm not sure the way we live now is different we make love instead of war or do we [Music] everybody does his thing today what more can you say but the way it is [Music] all right that's the way they want to grasp i believe that the bible gives us our social position thank you i hope to prove worthy of the tyler miss america in 1935 and that is second to the man we must always let the man be the head and lead the way and make the decision civilization has made a great mistake in giving the woman the right to vote it's fine if the women feel they should be liberated the women would well i think they've had too much already but if they like it they should be pushed out and made act like a man and take it like a man if she has no children then she should sort of take up some kind of a hobby and i present you with this scepter the movies well i've got more boulder when i was a kid you didn't see anything all you seen was cowboy movies the movies uh that used to be underground of course are able to be put out on the main street they're expensive uh they're in poor taste they just can't compare with the classics of the past there's not a decent movie to see i remember the time we used to go to a theater there and have to deal they used to cry today they're uh well it's different there they're all more open and you know they're more to the fact let's face it thanks we can't see any of this filth in the movies i think there's too much pornography everything is sex today my grandmother wouldn't let me go out the corner look at one of theirs let alone go to the movies i i really think they're ridiculous they seem to emphasize sex a lot which is a normal thing according to why i see things no we pull a good number of stunts ourselves but not to the extreme that the uh don't you hit that down there until i'm ready children are going nowadays are you ready what we call fun in our time uh let it go it would be rather uh boredom for the trial of today our children have had a great deal of fun nice clean fun just like we did when we were young and i am now starting a school to train these children to develop these powers while they are young [Music] i'd like to be a teenager right now i think it's wild kids kids are really aware [Music] oh this is a kind of a necklace that i made made out of chicken bones not a groovy huh is perfectly wonderful oh very it's kind of heavy you know is it yeah but it's you know i decided yeah it doesn't collect light and just shoes [Music] i'm not sure maybe life is a replay maybe life is a replay maybe life is a replay [Music] la [Music] [Applause] [Music] ah the sun will come out tomorrow bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow there will be sun yes so this film predates that um and it's written the music was written by the same guy who who did annie um fascinating film fascinating a bunch of dirty hippies um montage at the end it's like oh no you're about the same it's like are you are you really the same um love that film absolutely love that film because it is an advertisement for arrow shirts um and this is why i collect films like this is that this was a very niche uh audience it was made for a very specific time period and it actually got into distribution into libraries and so i guess they thought the message about the generation gap kind of went beyond just selling shirts arrow shirts so um fascinating stuff uh so i'm going to ask a question and please answer uh please answer in the uh comments somebody was talking about the tv show uh friends but not this the sitcom but the show that was in the 70s that came on saturday morning is that person on line because i i have found one of them and i'd like to play it um probably after this film but uh this next film that i'm going to show we're going to continue the trifecta of songs um this was a series that has a lot of songs in it and deals with uh kids emotions and trying to talk with kids about their emotions or sing with kids about their emotions so this is i'm feeling scared [Music] feelings every day and it's all right to have feelings feelings every which way cause [Music] how do you feel right now how do you feel right now [Music] for there are serious times and furious times jealous and even envious times glad i'm so mad times how do you feel right now everybody has feelings feelings every day and it's all right to have feelings feelings every special person and i'm feeling this way today [Laughter] [Music] there are so many things i'm afraid of scary things night and day maybe some things really can't hurt me is it all right to fear this way come on hurry up it's not that high [Music] oh come on i did it it's real easy [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] i'm afraid of worms that are icky and my dogs who jump at me my friends say worms can't hurt me still i'm scared as can be [Music] sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings [Music] don't be scared i'm all mixed up and afraid [Music] what have i been called to the office it must be a mistake i bet i don't think i'm in any trouble but why are my hands soaking wet sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared you're all right people say but when i'm called to the principal's office can i feel scared and afraid anyway okay okay [Music] all of my friends said this would be easy from up here things look small i think i'll jump off tomorrow better climb down on my phone sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared you can't do what they say but what if i should hurt myself badly maybe feeling afraid [Music] couldn't find her did she leave me here alone i'm scared what should i do now i don't know how to get home sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings don't be scared it's all right people say she says my mom never would leave me but i feel scared and afraid anyway [Music] mom and dad drag me to a party i know that i won't have fun all the kids probably won't like me i'm scared i wish i could run [Music] sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings there is nothing to hear people say why am i scared of meeting new people i'm all mixed up about feeling this way [Music] what was that who's in the doorway i should not be here alone is somebody coming to hurt me i wish i were already home [Music] sometimes i have scary thoughts and feelings careful now be on guard people say i think sometimes fear can protect me maybe feeling afraid is okay [Music] uh here [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] yeah there's not really a resolution there it's just kind of creepy it's just kind of creepy oh and it doesn't really it just shows a bunch of kids really scared um a lot of films will resolve this uh but yeah i forgot about this series it just shows and discusses and it's the idea is then you discuss what you saw with uh a teacher and talk about that and process it but yeah it just shows a lot of kids being scared and singing about it in a really and the music is super creepy um so sorry if that triggered anybody but uh yeah as i said it's a whole series uh of those four or five films of which i think i did one about being mad um which i'll show at some point because it's it's really good um yeah so this uh next film goes out to bill who we were i can't remember what we were doing we were watching some uh some films saturday morning stuff and and somebody talked about um this series and the idea was that um in saturday morning in the 60s 70s uh there was a lot of parent groups that were complaining that basically saturday morning was just advertising just shoving advertising down kids faces down their their gullets uh for toys and for cereal and for candy and you know whatever and that even that the shows were just basically making they were just ads for whatever toy that beared the likeness of the the thing um and so there was this kind of mandate that came down that um educational content had to be added to these films and in the 80s and 90s we saw it by them adding that little tiny segment at the end of a cartoon that you know has gi joe and his team talking about i don't know anything like safety bike safety um or that would go through and try to pull out plot points in the uh the cartoon that uh talked about something positive uh but in in the magical time in the late 60s early 70s there were a lot of little short things um very special person oh most important person that was the series over watching tasting party which in that used to show i think on cbs uh so this film uh series uh my friends it shows kids in different parts of the united states and kind of shows their culture and this one is philadelphia so enjoy hi i'm stephanie rosenbaum let's be friends i live in an historic city i live in the eastern part of the united states in the state of pennsylvania there's a playground in my school it's on the roof [Music] wow [Music] so [Music] i live in philadelphia [Music] philadelphia is located in the eastern part of pennsylvania on the delaware philadelphia was founded by william penn in 1681. when america was a colony of england philadelphia was the largest city in america the first congress from the 13 colonies met here in 1774. the center congress met here in independence hall on july 1776 congress adopted the declaration of independence the united states constitution was signed here in 1787. philadelphia was the case of the united states from 1790 to 1800 betsy ross made the first flag in this house and philadelphia's most famous founding father was benjamin franklin philadelphia is a city of first the first hospital the first bank the first newspaper [Music] [Music] hey [Music] [Music] yeah a short little segment um that i remember distantly um and yes someone commented schoolhouse rock was part of this um i would show schoolhouse rock on here but uh that content's all owned by disney now and uh i am purposely not showing disney material because the hammer comes down very hard uh the times that i've done that and so we're going to unfortunately not uh show schoolhouse rock on here i uh i did a show it was a sing-along and it was a lot of fun um of all the schoolhouse rocks that i have i have some multiplication rock i have some science rock i have some uh history america rock um great stuff man uh singing the preamble to the constitution i started like tearing up a little bit it was it was real good anyways uh so unfortunately yes um no schoolhouse rock on this broadcast um because their robots will come and kill me okay so um i know that many of us are working at home and and really this is why uh i'm doing this is that i'm working from home and i need something a little bit of structure for my day a little bit of reason for me to go take a shower brush my teeth change clothes wake up at a certain time although i forgot to set my alarm and i slept way too late and i'm kind of irritated about that anyhow uh but you know we need sometimes as reminders about why it's important to maintain personal hygiene even if you are not in a social space if you're just surrounded by your family um you know it kind of sometimes helps to be reminded and this film is specifically made for boys in the 70s and the metaphor that it uses uh is pretty great so this is personal hygiene for boys enjoy [Music] your body plays hard [Music] your body works hard [Music] your body works something like a machine like a big eight with a quad your body like this machine needs good care you wouldn't like to let this engine sit idle but maybe you're like rick who takes better care of the car than he does himself well you're probably smarter than rick just as you run the car you run your body you get the exercise you need to keep your body healthy and strong and you know that just as a car needs the right fuel to give its top performance you need the right fuel for your own body to function at its best for your body fuel you need a balanced diet if you've forgotten what that is you can check it out again so we can assume that your machine-like body gets the fuel and exercise it needs you also know that your body needs rest eight to ten hours of sleep and if you don't get rest well you might just lose your healthy good looks your posture might look sloppy or your disposition may turn sour so take time to turn yourself off by getting the rest and sleep you need okay so you take care of your inside body with the right exercise food and sleep but what about your outside body how your body looks is important too how do you get your body looking good right take the same good care of it that rick takes of the car why bother because people particularly this kind enjoy looking at attractive things okay what can you do to look better keep clean and that may not be as easy for you now as it will be later on in your life right now maybe you're like rick and don't think that keeping clean is a big deal but at your age you have special problems hair is one it's begun to grow on certain parts of your body to keep the hairy parts of your body clean you need plenty of soap and water and spread that soap around your skin has between two and three million sweat glands they're always working so you know what that means your whole body has to be washed just about every day to prevent body odor body odor body odor body odor flowers smell sweet enjoyable fresh pancakes smell great but the smell of sweat well sweat is something you ought to get rid of not just for your sake but for other people as well your body sweats as much as two quarts every day that's a lot of sweat you can't just leave it on your body and your body includes your feet too they sweat inside your shoes don't forget your feet and dry them carefully that lessens the chances of getting athlete's foot a fungus disease drying your skin helps your body because it removes oil and dead skin cells that's especially important if you have an acne problem acne can pop out any place on your body where there are a lot of oil glands like your back and your face the best thing you can do for acne is to keep yourself clean by washing and of course eat a balanced diet and don't pick but everybody tells you that right if your physician has prescribed a skin medication great but if you're treating yourself be careful some products that are supposed to cure acne may irritate your skin daily showering or bathing is your best insurance for a clean body and clear skin okay but what else can you do well an added protection against body odor is a deodorant that covers up odor or an antiperspirant that keeps you from perspiring but some people don't use deodorant because they have sensitive skin so now with just a little effort you look and feel pretty good of course if you don't practice cleanliness you won't die but you may smell like you did the hair on your head also needs special care whatever style you have but even if your hair style is no style you may want to do your hair to keep it healthy combing and brushing your hair remove dust dirt and dandruff while distributing the natural hair oil brushing also stimulates the circulation of blood in your scalp it helps make your hair healthy of course the important part of your hair care is done at home you can wash your hair every day if you like but twice a week is a fair average but instead of using regular soap you might want to use shampoo after a good washing be sure to rinse your hair well to get all the suds out that also helps prevent dandruff what about that hair beginning to grow on your face that needs care too if you don't plan on cultivating it you'll have to shave if you use an electric shaver it sometimes helps to dry your skin before starting some special pre-shave liquids and powders do this when you shave follow the instructions that came with your shaver some work best with your skin kept loose others are better with a skin pull tight if you use a safety razor it helps to wash your face with soap and warm water first washing softens your beard making it easier to shave you don't need a whole lot of ladder to get a good shave a little bit a long way with a safety razor pulling the skin tight helps keep you from cutting yourself and gives you a good close shave if you do cut yourself you can usually stop the bleeding with cold water or a styptic pencil it has an ingredient that stops the bleeding and seals the cut but it'll sting a little while you're working on your face how about your teeth one thing you can do for them is keep them clean ideally you should brush your teeth after each meal brush your teeth the way they grow brush down on the top teeth brush up on the bottom teeth that way the bristles get between the teeth and take out food that's stuck there brush across on the chewing surfaces the other thing you can do is see a dentist twice a year for a checkup of course if you have any health problems a physician can probably help you good personal hygiene includes not only how you care for your body but your attitude towards it why deliberately mistreat your body you know that drugs can be misused and you know the same is true of alcohol and tobacco one more thing don't overlook your clothes clean clothes are part of personal hygiene too if you can change them daily take a good look at yourself are you taking care of your body [Music] so this is probably shown to to boys and teenagers um potentially when you know they split by gender and the girls got to see a promotional film for uh menstruation brought to you by modis or by tampax or by some other company that was looking to market their product to girls so they get their talk and the dudes are sitting around in a room and they get you on this film about washing their pits and not picking at their face um i think excuse me i think nowadays actually i've been told that they don't separate the the boys and the girls and then they both see films about um puberty uh for each of them so they get to learn about the other person's body and the embarrassing and horrible things that they have to go through to become adults um yeah that was a great film i love it uh body odor um and i think that that's actually uh referring to a commercial that was around that time about body odor uh let's see what else we got uh i think i'm gonna all right i got one more film and this is gonna be a longer film and this one goes out to all the nurses um who are i'm sure everybody has a friend who's a nurse who's uh overworked and nervous and scared in this film was made i think in 1942 and it's trying to um get nurses it's trying to recruit nurses um just in general just to con for in a movie why in a movie i want to be a nurse if you love people you want to share their fun help helps in the mario i want to do something worthwhile the cool hand on the fevered row well maybe you've got something there at least it's real oh merrily i wish you'd be serious maybe the real thing is better than any old make for me joni we've been together all through school we've had a lot of fun i'm gonna miss you terribly look if you want to be a nurse then well i'll think about it anyway what do you really mean oh if you're only good when we said our goodbyes at school that morning i was awfully anxious to get home and discuss my plans with mother [Music] joan yes mother so nice having you home again and your decision to become a nurse has made me very happy i'm so glad you're like your father when you say that he always did things for others oh if he were only here now i feel sure that he'd agree with me mother i think he would he'd help you pick the best school don't you worry merrily and i have talked with miss martin at the oslo memorial hospital she was very nice to us why not talk to dr lawson you know he brought you into the world and he took care of dad during his last illness all right mother i'll see dr lawson tomorrow wait a minute i'll call marylee maybe she'll go with me morning dad well good morning if school trains you to get up this early we'll send to know that you're sure in your own mind this time i think i am dad i'm going with joan today to see dr lawson and get my health certificate i'll ask him well dear marilyn if that's what you want to do that's what your mother and i want you to do that's what i call a thorough examination well it has to be now tell me what made you girls decide to become nurses well it's all her fault it's really as much your fault doctor as anybody my fault you see when i was a little girl you were my secret passion was i indeed you're what well anyway you always seem to bring happiness into my life you take the pain and the trouble out of life for everybody i decided i wanted to be like that to have people look at me the way they do it you my dear that's one of the finest things that's ever been said about me where'd your girl decide to take your training at the oakland memorial hospital oh that's a splendid hospital that has the approval of the national nursing organizations and the american college of surgeons you couldn't do better all right well thanks ever so much it's been a pleasure to have you [Music] yes joan and narrowly i know just how huge and forbidding the hospital looked to you that first day you couldn't know then that beyond those doors you were to find a host of sincere men and women with high ideals and with whom you would share so much of life's richest experience you were greeted warmly everyone seemed glad to welcome you and from the beginning you were made to feel at home you were delighted to learn that each of you was to have a room of your very own where you could surround yourselves with your personal belongings [Music] when you were ready to have a look about you found the house mother waiting for you anxious to acquaint you with your new surroundings and have you meet your classmates bedtime came all too soon [Music] and so came the dawn come on sleepyhead it's a shining new day and breakfast is waiting [Music] and soon after breakfast your first class [Music] wasn't there a lot to learn in just making a bed [Music] anatomy and physiology were fascinating subjects you both made excellent grades you were taught how to employ many of the techniques of precision taking joan's blood pressure seemed a serious business didn't it merrily [Music] in the diet kitchen you learn the significance of nutrition in maintaining good health subjects such as history of nursing ethics and psychology were important but the many phases of work in the chemical laboratory tests which reveal so much about the patient's condition these were a never-ending source of interest a new world unfolded under the microscope a world of minute organisms which you were always trying to identify [Music] the gymnasium was great fun and its benefits were most apparent when the time came for your periodic physical examinations everything was done to keep you well and happy [Music] will you ever forget that beautiful capping ceremony i've seen it many times and each time i remember the day when my big sister handed me the land and i realized its significance that i as a younger student was entrusted to take the light from one who had gone before to keep it brightly burning in my heart until i in turn might pass it on to a younger sister a big lump always comes into my throat and i'm thrilled anew with my profession [Music] that was when you realized that you had chosen a life's work that is real worthwhile important it's better than any make-believe isn't it narrowly [Music] your first accident case a crushing's hand injury and how carefully you were supervised in the preparation of medicines [Music] the first blood transfusion and the flush of returning life the patient and painstaking care of your instructors well-regulated routines produced an appetite which was satisfied with good food and those informal after-dinner get-togethers in the recreation room never penetrated to the peace and quiet of the library when it was necessary to do a little quiet cramming for an examination the most cheerful place in the hospital and the babies often set their elders a good example oh i feel perfectly terrible oh i don't know why you can make these videos my dear i do mean red footbeds without wrinkles as big as my finger oh i suffered and suffered you suffered nobody [Music] feel oh good the visiting nurse capable tender human everyone in the community loves her [Music] those handsome interns discarded their professional sternness at the frequent dances [Music] a little child restored to help what was more dramatic than your duty in the operating room everything moved with split-second precision and all precautions were taken to ensure the well-being of the patient here nothing was left to chance [Music] and was there any more satisfying experience than placing a tiny new life in the arms of a mother there was nothing make-believe about that was their marriage [Music] and joan had there been any doubt i know they were speedily dispelled when that charming patient in room 119 kissed your hand [Music] those final examinations merrily had trouble spelling sulfamilamide so uh oh well she made a good try at it anyway [Music] i care so did i never before has the opportunity of the nurse branched out into so many channels will be sought after in many fields in the homes of the rich in hospitals schools and industry i adventure in the spirit of service will attract many to the armed forces not so long ago young women were left at home but through the american red cross today the nurse can render a priceless service to her country by the gift of herself her trained sincere resourceful interest in human beings in our fighting men and when victory comes it will be said that she gave aid to her country in fullest measure the cause of justice and right might prevail and that free men might once more hold up their heads and human decency sweep clean the sky [Music] thanks everybody i'll see you tomorrow have a good rest of the day you
