foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and try to figure out what's going on um so that is one a film that we scanned from the Cornet collection but it didn't have a soundtrack with it it was kind of raw materials and um so we're looking for it we're trying to find the soundtrack because uh visually it just man 1977 working class America yeah just so much about that just resonates with me like growing up in that time and all those things um and you know would love to know more I did post a kind of a description of what the film was supposed to be about um if we heard the sound but um yeah so maybe one day we will find it and we will Premiere we'll marry the two the soundtrack with the the film and uh we'll we'll watch it again and understand what's going on um uh so behind me I have a film scanner film scanner uh and I've got some films uh set up the first one is Flipper the seal Flipper the seal I need to change I'll start this then I'll change what the title says enjoy out in the cold deep ocean seals swim and fish thank you with thick fur that keeps them warm and Powerful flippers that make them fast swimmers they spend most of their time in the water but in the spring of every year they come out of the ocean and go on to the land where they have their young our story is about one of those baby seals [Music] this is where our Story begins on the lonely privilege islands near Alaska home of the Alaska fur seals the islands are Rocky and have no trees but now in the springtime as the weather gets warmer flowers begin to appear [Music] seabirds arrive on the rocky Cliffs seagulls and other birds make their nests and lay their eggs [Music] it's the month of May now and out in the sea the Alaska fur seals are making their long journey here to the privilege Islands the longest trip is made by the female seals from the coast of California northward to the islands a migration of about 3 000 miles nearly 5 000 kilometers they'll reach the islands in early June but the male seals the Bulls don't have to travel as far they spent the winter in Northern Waters and so they get to the islands first each bull picks out a spot on the beach and then tries to make sure that no other bull will take it every bull fights to get his own place on the beach his own territory biting and slashing with sharp teeth foreign ERS carry scars [Music] each bull becomes the master of his own territory [Music] now they begin to watch for the females in June the first females the cows arrive the female seals are much smaller than the Bulls each female will give birth to a baby seal on the island but first the scrambling and scrapping begin again as every bull tries to round up as many females as he can [Music] these bulls will be the fathers of the baby seals that are born next year some bowls mate with only one female some with five or six and some of the strongest toughest Bulls May gather a hundred or more females foreign within a few weeks every female gives birth to the baby seal she's been carrying for almost a year and this is the baby we'll call flipper [Music] flipper was born just a few hours ago so he's still a little wobbly thousands and thousands of these baby seals these pups are born every year [Music] first meal will be the rich thick milk of his mother like that [Music] wow [Music] he's learning to use his flippers like the big seals do for scratching [Music] for Fanning to keep cool but when you're small big flippers can also be a problem [Music] and so can big ceilings [Music] being a seal pup isn't easy you get slapped and stepped on and walked on until you don't even know where your mother is and trying to find her isn't easy either [Music] he won't get any help until his mother finds him and it's good that she finally does because now he's stuck [Music] grabbing flipper by the skin of his neck doesn't hurt him [Music] feels take good care of their pups but they also have to take care of themselves [Music] whenever they want to eat they have to leave their pups to find food [Music] Flipper's mother will swim out many miles catching fish tonight she'll be gone for several days flipper has now been alone for four days and it hasn't been easy he's getting hungry but these mother seals don't want to be bothered by a pup that isn't their own [Applause] [Music] finally his mother returns thank you [Music] she'll protect him and feed him again [Music] little by little he'll learn to take care of himself as the days pass flipper and the other pups Gather in groups that are called pods there's one thing all the pups have to learn how to swim sometimes a female seal will take her baby swimming whether he wants to go or not [Music] With a Little Help from mother the swimming lesson is over for this baby seal [Music] thank you today there are almost 2 million Alaska fur seals on the pribiloff islands one reason there are so many is that the United States Canada Japan and the Soviet Union have an agreement to protect them biologists who work for the United States government check them every year what are the jobs they have is to count the seals [Music] [Applause] they keep track of the number of full-grown seals and the number of babies like flipper then the biologists round up some of the seals they select certain ones to catch they use Nets so the seals won't be injured then they fasten a small tag to the tough skin of a flipper it doesn't hurt the seal the tag helps the biologists keep track of that seal year after year biologists can also keep track of the seals in another way they put a harness with a small radio in it on the animal the harness doesn't hurt the seal the radio sends signals that will let the biologists know where the seal travels during the year oh my God biologists are learning many things about the seals about where they travel and how they live in the ocean and on the land in November when the weather gets colder flipper and all the other seals will leave these islands and swim South to warmer parts of the ocean [Music] spring comes seals will return and the story of the baby seals will begin once again [Music] so many of you in the comments uh were commenting about the uh the pretty uh The Bullying the brutality the uh the Frat party-esque uh aspect of it um yeah seals man all right uh this next film features puppets you've been warned [Music] looking for Cosmo Tahoe well let me see right now I think you might find him with his friends in the forest Town schoolhouse oh now before the Bell Rings I'd like to say that we're all looking forward to the yakimo clubs band concert next week class dismissed have a nice weekend everyone thank you Miss Bunny come on gang basketball practice Yeah [Music] foreign trying to eat my pizza in peace and uh the film built up what we call Pottery it kind of warped and came off so uh let's learn about the glory of spring enjoy [Music] [Music] thank you foreign spring is the beauty and profusion of its colorful and fragrant flowers the loveliness of blossoms Is Not Mere adornment but a vital factor of plant survival petals brilliant collars and floral perfume attract insights particularly bees moths and butterflies which incidentally to the pursuit of nectar carry pollen from flower to flower thus ensuring cross-pollination and the production of next year's seeds each in its own special way flowers have become marvelously adapted to the size shape and habits of their welcome insect visitors in this strange and wonderful yet unconscious Partnership of animals and plants some people see The Guiding hand of a greater power among the first insect pollinated flowers to bloom is for severe a shrub of the olive family Flores with four petals are not as common as those having three or five the buds of the Lilac begin to swell it is a little hard to believe that from these small buds great clusters of flowers and leaves will soon come forth [Music] the Lilac is so much a part of our American scene that we are prone to forget that it is an immigrant from Eastern Europe and it was not an American but a Frenchman named Le man who developed the first lilac hybrids he did his work in narsi during the Frank of Russian war while the city was surrounded by enemy troops [Music] the individual lilac flower is too small to attract insects banded together in clusters the tiny blossoms make a showy display like the Forsythia the Lilac is four-parted a typical member of the olive family [Music] the Japanese quince is a member of the great Rose family which not only decorates our Homes and Gardens but keeps our fruitful full of Ruddy cheeked apples juicy pears mouth-watering peaches and a whole array of smaller fruits plums cherries strawberries blackberries and raspberries for many years the bridal wreath another member of the Rose family with a favorite foundation planting used to cover the lower margins of exterior walls here again the individual flowers aren't large enough to attract insects but grouped together in communities they do a good advertising job this slender Bud contains the miniature leaves and flowers of the nanny Berry it opens with a beautiful gesture [Music] the name Nanny Berry refers to the order of the flowers which is unpleasant reminding those who get a whiff of it of goats past their Prime [Music] foreign [Music] and here are the nanny berries themselves we should rarely find a bud larger than this inch long Whopper of the magnolia the flower unfolds dramatically [Music] a prettier sight than these sunlit Magnolia blooms would be hard to emit [Music] uh at the edge of the forest grows the Wild Plum Tree another member of the Rose family and a Native American the Wild Plum has thorns that threaten the tender noses of grazing cattle which might otherwise make a meal of its leaves typical of members of the Rose family are the numerous statements which will produce great quantities of pollen of which only a few grains will have a successful landing on a stigma [Music] there are many varieties of the crowd like the Wild Plum they grow at the forest margins and are members of the Rose family with thorns that discourage greedy cattle without the help of the time lapse camera we'd never see this pretty belly like an animated Chinese screen the unopened blossoms are pink [Music] once open the flowers are white like those of the Wild Plum [Music] the Bechtel crab is a mutation a variety that suddenly departed from the ways of its parents it cannot reproduce itself except vegetatively the flowering dogwood is another small tree of the forest margin the brown scales that enclose the flower bud and one pair outside another pair Within separate grow turn white and array themselves around the center like petals true Petals of the Dogwood are yellow and very small they are on the tiny flowers crowded into the center Rosette [Music] about to unfold before us is the drama of the horse chestnut tree flowers and the leaves spend the winter folded and packed in Sticky Buds like this gluey substance is protection against the core bees use this gum to mend their hives when the blossoms appear the bees will return to gather pollen and nectar and unknowingly to carry from flower to flower the grains of pollen adhering to their bodies wasps and bumblebees will also visit the flowers on errands of Their Own and while so occupied perform a service indispensable to the production of the nuts from which new trees will grow foreign [Music] [Applause] at first the pollen receiving parts of the flowers the pistols are held erect to brush from the bodies of visiting insects the pollen grains they've brought from other blossoms this accomplished the pistols move out of the way and the stamens the parts that produce pollen thrust themselves in the path of the insects dusting them with pollen to carry away to other flowers the movements of pistols and stamens create this pretty dance [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] inside these burnished green floors the nuts are forming they are the fruit of the Horse Chestnut and contain the seed of the tree in October the green husks will break open uncovering the smooth and shiny nuts well before the fruit of the horse chestnut has ripened most of the flowering shrubs and trees will have finished making their miraculous little buds which hold and keep safe throughout the winter the leaves and flowers destined to be the glory of next year's spring foreign some of you don't like time lapse photography so we're going to try the puppets again we're going to try this one more time the great piggy bank uh raid let's try it again fingers crossed enjoy [Music] looking for a cosmo title well let me see right now I think you might find him with his friends in the forest Town schoolhouse [Music] now before the of films featuring these puppets um and so there's just a lot of shots of like a clapboard and then this puppet appears and um no sound though uh wow okay um how much time do we have left all right uh this is part of a project that we did with the Library of Congress where we scanned some films for them uh for this amazing book where is it it's right here that came out many years ago probably 15 years ago called uh the field guide to sponsored films um this was by uh Rick prelinger but also others this came out in 2006 so what is that um 15 years ago uh anyways so that came out and then at some point we were like well how are people going to be able to see these things so uh we did work with library Congress to put these things on some of these things online this film is not from our collection but it's still pretty great uh because it has uh animated tuberculosis germs in it this is goodbye Mr germ enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you oh boy what a nice time [Music] well what can I do for you put that old book Away dad oh come on are they supposed to be pictures that that my dear young man is a picture of the germ that causes tuberculosis tuberculosis TB to you oh that little thing for that little thing comes out awful busy it doesn't look like much to me no no do you know that that little thing is alive ah blow me down quiet please and it eats as you do and it breathes oh if that germ could only talk what a story it would tell but germs don't talk no but suppose he could suppose I could invent in my laboratory a special radio that could hear what he might have to say yes that's an idea all right laughs [Applause] thank you good morning good morning good morning how are y'all well I suppose you'd like a piece of this banana wouldn't you it's good Come Along come on yeah yeah all right now where's my Julius come on Juliet come on yeah yes we're not here here have a piece of carrot it's fresh and full of vitamins come on come on Junius come on yeah see now okay can you all keep very quiet today because I I want to talk to TB the gym this morning yes sir he'd be the girl [Applause] with my new germ radio invention hooked up to my microscope and I've learned German language too clever fellow these gems laughs [Applause] now quiet everybody [Music] and [Music] um hello hello TV hello there professor well well there you are tell us about yourself sure I love to talk about myself exciting full of Adventure your incubator up there is a pretty snug place for an old-timer like me Professor but I remember when I was a Youngster I lived in the lung of a nice lady ant Matilda yes yes of course trooper I remember Aunt Matilda she never seemed very sick but she did have a cough never thought much about it though didn't she have a little nephew right oh Edgar was his name dear Aunt Matilda used to feed him tastiest food for him to be sure it wasn't too hot that's how I got into little Ann's lungs watch professor howdy and once in Edgar's mouth of course I made my way into his lungs [Music] well what happened then lost so warm and pink and cozy of course I was lonesome but sorter so I got busy you know we germs raise big families and fast food all we need is a dark place in the body where soap and water turned can't get at us oh how soap and water kill us and Edgar knew nothing about all this oh no I guess he didn't even feel sick but soon as in edger's body got busy and started to build walls around us oh yes that's how the human body protects itself the cells of which it is made lock up the germs so they cannot scatter elsewhere in the body so there we were all bottled up jugged like ordinary thieves Edgar's body one [Music] one uh-huh that's what we scientists call a tubercle oh what a tubercle a tubercle in a medical book looks like this a firm round capsule and in the center the germs but go on TV what happened next well ironed and starved some of us managed to stay alive for years I guess yeah [Music] Edgar grew up to be a handsome young man had a girl too worked awfully hard to make good was careless about his meals didn't eat right stayed out late at night when he ought to have been in bed all that put a strain on his body and one day something happened we germs saw our chance to escape Edgar paid no attention even though he had a coffin last week we multiplied so fast and just sales couldn't keep up with us so we spread and spread and staped out new plot his girl was the first to take notice the boy had no appetite and he had no pep tired all the time then one day weed germs broke through a pipe an artery that passed through long land and a great flood of blood poured out Edgar coughed up some blood that scared him at last he went to a doctor who sent him to a sanatorium there he rested nothing to do but get his body strong sad news for us oh yes I remember Edgar in the sanatorium that's where I got you by the way that's right Professor that's sanatorium is a bad place for germs like us no chance at all they don't let any of us Escape every patient has his own paper cup and you know what they burn these cups Shore dance poor terms how is it you weren't destroyed too well the nurse sent some of it just sputum to the laboratory to be examined and I was in there so the man in the white coat gave us a new home a culture he called it experimenting I guess he kept us in an incubator when it was warm and there we grew well I guess that's the story and it was the man in the white coat who gave this culture to me do you know if Edgar got well professor oh yes he recovered completely he's happily married and has a boy of his own now that's good another Edgar I may die soon but my tribe will get him too we'll get young Edgar I know you won't things have changed TB Edgar senior had learned his lesson so he took young Edgar to the doctor and headed tuberculin test made well what on Earth is that just a simple skin test it tells if there are any germs like you present in a person's body you don't say smarty the currency is hidden away so they invent this clever test ah well this test was negative no germs in young Edgar's body suppose it had been positive professor in that case the doctor would have had an x-ray picture made of his chest as he did with another of his patients Mary a sweet young girl from high school her test came back positive and the doctor had this x-ray picture made of her chest gee let me see it too there you see the ribs and here is the healthy lung tissue and there see that spot that's a little tubercle like the one in Edgar senior's lung it's hard and firm now no germ will ever get out of that tubercle and once every year until she's grown up the doctor will make another x-ray picture but Professor what's to become of all my tribe with that kind of thing going on sorry Old Timer but you're almost through when all young folks get a tuberculin test and those who react positively yet an x-ray TB germs are going to die out this is a fight to the Finish and man is going to win this fight Goodbye Mr germ so that's our finish I see the day when tuberculosis will be lit I see happy healthy children growing up without the fear that their lives will be ruined by it I can see parents happy with grown-up children parents who in the old days would have died and nearly dead I can really see this ancient misery disappearing how about a cookie and a cool drink oh thank you dear oh mother Daddy has just told us another of his wonderful stories and and when we are all grown up our children are not going to get tuberculosis are they daddy no indeed my dear thank you foreign so I would pay to see feature film featuring that uh that doctor and his lab [Laughter] that could be a pretty good horror movie especially a reboot of it nowadays um you know going in down into the lab where he's got monkeys running around and various animals and just chaos um maybe see him talking to uh covet uh the coronavirus uh it was really really an amazing different time um but thanks for tuning in today thank you retro gamer for the two pounds uh for coffee one way you can support us is by hitting the super thanks button that will buy us coffee splicing tape little cores these little guys not not the beer but those little plastic cores um lots of other things uh Banker boxes uh Etc but uh yeah you can also hit the Thumbs Up Button the like button you can watch other films that we've posted on the YouTube channel that have some a little bit of annoying advertising on them but that annoying advertising the little bit of the soul that it steals from you uh translates into pennies for us so thank you for that um but uh everyone have a great weekend uh it's first weekend in April it's my wife's birthday and so we're gonna figure out a way to celebrate uh maybe go to first Friday see some ought tonight but everybody have a great weekend be back on Monday and um yeah don't forget I
