tobacco well down and best word into Missouri and is divided into three major reach misters the so-called Britania the Carolinas Georgia and Florida tobacco types are determined by different soil rainfall and temperature type most widely grown using the largest annual tongue is called bright tobacco sown a color of it's cured leaf right tobacco is heat treated on racks in a curing barn this process gives it a mildness and flavor that provides the base for a wide range of different smoking blends [Music] from Maryland comes another major strain of tobacco grown in just five counties of the state in blending it serves a double purpose it has a flavor found in no other tobacco and it burns more freely [Music] Missouri Kentucky Tennessee and Ohio grow the third major strain of tobacco Burley famous the world over for its fine smoking qualities the Burley leaf is more like Maryland than bright and like Maryland is cured simply by hanging it in well ventilated barns prized for the spice it imparts to the blend is the highly aromatic small leaf strain of tobacco known as Turkish millions of pounds of Turkish are imported for Chesterfield from the near East every year they've grown primarily for exceed the flax fiber is brought by train loads to be processed and acoustic new streamlined paper mill mixed with pure cold mountain water the flax is shredded and pounded to a creamy poke it is passed through mixers and condensers until it is ready to behind mesh screen where the water is drawn off and the pulp passed on to be formed into cigarette paper miles and miles of it [Music] the leaves must have their moisture content adjusted to a uniform level so the racks are passed into a chamber for an exact amount of oil fineness Western fir into head is pressed about grown what type it is and when it was bought for many who understand tobacco as a business and as a way of life one must enter a home which tobacco was built and where an entire family's life moves with the growth cycle of the crop of the many farmers in tobacco land Claude Whitehead of Chatham Virginia is one of the most progressive the tobacco cycle begins in January and plans for the year's operations absorb the interest of the whole Whitehead family winter is waning and the time has come to get ready the tobacco seed bed tobacco seed is almost microscopic about the size of the poppy seeds you get on bakery rolls the farmer mixes the seed with neutral soil to ensure an even distribution in the sowing his seed has been selected after many years of experimentation and improvement not only by the planter but by government agencies the three great types of American Tobacco Maryland Burley and Brite were each developed regionally by natural factors but variations within each type have been scientifically adapted to help the farmer get the best and the most abundant heal from his particular acree [Music] while the seeds are germinating there will be plenty of time for many small spring chores around the farm [Music] it is a great day for the farmer when the seed beds protective covering can be drawn back to inspect the first leaflets of this new year's tobacco crop but before the seedlings can be transplanted to the fields many more warm and sunny days must pass [Music] [Applause] while the fruit trees flower all of tobacco lands farmers prepare their fields to receive the tobacco seedlings a farmer usually drives his own tractor to plow his own acres for like all farmers the tobacco planter loves the soil then to tobacco is a crop requiring infinite pains farmers like to say that it takes thirteen months a year to raise good tobacco months of planning and preparation months of careful attention to the growing crop dawn of the first transplanting day comes as a zero hour for the tobacco farmer he will be up with the Sun and will breakfast heartily for before nightfall tens of thousands of his tobacco seedlings must be taken from the seed bed and set out to grow at stake in this operation will be farmer whiteheads biggest cash crop and the bulk of his income for the year ahead all hands are needed in the fields and of the seed beds on this day to lift the baby plants gently out of the earth and carry them to the planting field to set out his tobacco seedlings precisely and individually and neat rows and at exact intervals but it uses an ingenious device which although slower than automatic trans planters enables him to see that every one of his plants is healthy and gets a proper start in life on this day or on days near it the entire South land will be stitched across with a delicate green petit boy [Music] now a prayer for rain tens of thousands of thirsty shoots need water [Music] [Applause] [Music] again the Southlands mountain ranges come to the aid of the farmer in lifting the damp winds from the sea to be cooled and condensed into the blessing of rain [Music] [Applause] more spring days pass the critical period is over tobacco's seedlings and struck root and are growing steadily until they get too tall they can be cultivated by power machinery carefully steered along the contoured roads the earth must not be allowed to harden and caked around the young roots weeds must be discouraged and for this work there is no labor saving substitute for the good old fashioned hole even in a mechanical age no one who rests a good life from the soil can avoid diligent work nor would they want to while the men are busy with tobacco mother Whitehead has some rows of her own to hold like everything else about the Whitehead farm mrs. whiteheads Department is thoroughly equipped to make the most of nature's bounty time was when folks only can their vegetables or laid them away to drive mrs. Whitehead can take her vegetables garden fresh and deep freeze them so that the whiteheads can enjoy fresh vegetables all next winter farm life need not be as tiresome as it used to be a farmer's lady need not be a grudge between household chores there is time for many more pleasant things time for gracious living time for a flower garden time for the problems of the young [Music] like many of the ladies in Tobacco land mrs. Whitehead takes proper pride in her grounds and planting and this year her Garden Club holds its midsummer show at her home [Music] and for the young vacation is not all hoeing and we [Music] meanwhile the southern Sun shines the tobacco leaves fill out and the summer is a long lazy growing time frequently the county agent comes by to check with farmer Whitehead on the progress of his typical crop the plants are strong and healthy how many pounds does it look like to be acre because of their years of experience farmer Whitehead and the agent can quite accurately answer that question far ahead of picking time granted of course normal weather for the remainder of the growing season another turning point in the tobacco cycle comes when the stock is ready to blossom into a white flower which if allowed to bloom would make tobacco land even more picturesque but instead the budding stock is broken off to direct the plants full strength into growing richer and more luxuriant leaves this operation is called topping and each single plant of mr. white heads many thousands must be dealt with individually while the top tobacco is getting its final growth there is time to harvest other crops for the tobacco farmer of today however prosperous is not a one crop operator tweety may raise and other grains where the livestock will be a crop of hay not just stacked up but properly bailed mr. whiteheads hay crop includes some fine alfalfa dairy products form a considerable portion of tobacco land's output though tobacco use the most money still things can happen to a tobacco crop and thrifty men like Farmer whitehead use their acres wisely but tobacco and everything that affects it remains the central interest the pot of gold at the Rainbows end is a barn full of rich yellow tobacco leaves by early autumn farmer whiteheads crop of bright tobacco is ready to be picked tobacco men call it cropping and a curious array of mule drawn sleds appears in the fields to fetch the crop the rapist leaves those at the bottom of the stalk are picked first again the work is all done by hand in several stages as the upper leaves mature in their turn the magnitude of this task can be appreciated when you figure that there will be about 7800 tobacco plants to each acre and about 20 leaves to be picked from each plant thus only 10 acres of tobacco mean about 1 and 1/2 million leaves to be picked and handled separately and handled not just once but several times over the first handling is to string the leaves on long sticks to get them ready for the curing barn now man takes over from nature takes the lush green leaf and ripens it into the softest gold no other crop harvested by man is more tenderly handled instead of being left to caprices of the weather it will have its moisture content properly controlled [Music] from the field the Layton sticks are taken to the curing barn there the sticks are racked up across the rafters row upon row right up to the roof these curing barns 20 feet square and 20 feet high are the special mark of the tobacco farm wherever you go in the south they used to be built of logs kinked up with mud or plaster the barns of modern tobacco farmers are of a more efficient modern structure so built is to provide an ample even flow of heat through every part of the green crop the heat required to cure bright tobacco used to be supplied only by smoldering log fires which had to be tended night and day for four or five days when mr. whiteheads barn is full he simply turns on and adjusts an oil heater [Music] now the barns are full and the fields are empty abundance grew even with automatic equipment the curing of tobacco cannot be hurried four or five days is still the time it takes to change the leaf from green to gold but now the process can be checked accurately and as it progresses the barns temperature is alternately raised and lowered between 80 and 180 degrees Fahrenheit this makes the tobacco leaf breathe and a cross-section of a typical curing barn shows that all the leaves are allowed to breathe freely and cure even [Music] after it is cured the tobacco must be graded leaf by leaf with practiced eyes Farmer whitehead and his helpers sort out and segregate the different grades of leaf this scene is being duplicated at this season all over tobacco land to you and me these leaves all look pretty much alike but in the market there are many gradations determined by color size texture aroma and other factors the ability to classify and evaluate cured tobacco at a touch or at a glance is one of those arts that men acquire only through long years of experience it is one of the oldest and subtler skills in all the folk ways of America after the leaves are graded they are tied to make handling more convenient into what are called hands of tobacco a dozen or so leaves laid together and knotted around at the Stork end by another leaf [Music] now the crop is ready for market and when the owner judges his time is ripe he loads up his truck for the first of several trips to the auction warehouse [Music] presently all the highways are alive with truckloads of tobacco heading into towns where auction sales are held [Music] market time in each section of tobacco land lasts from 8 to 12 weeks it begins in July in Georgia and South Carolina and ends months later in Kentucky competition is keen among the many warehouses in market towns the farmers bring their crops to the trading floors and shallow baskets each basket is carefully weighed and checked [Music] tobacco selling has developed a system and a ritual all its own the baskets of tobacco are laid out in long rows each basket marked with the owner's name and the certified weight down the rows lose the auctioneer followed by the buyers beds are made with rapid and subtle hand signals the auctioneer sees in a flash whose bid is high and the sales proceed with amazing speed the auctioneers clerk drops a purchase slip on each pile as it is sold the farmer picks up his slip and takes it to the warehouse office for redemption in hard cash a man with money in his pocket is ready to have fun so market time is also County Fair time and tobacco lab the whole family goes to town to hear the music can ride the rides to gaze and gossip and see the sights [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] but the County Fair is not for amusement only here the progressive farmer can inspect an order the latest in farm equipment [Music] at the fair farm products are exhibited and awarded prizes for tobacco len can grow the best of everything it needs and plenty of it here farmers meet their friends from farm near and the perennial topics of farm life are discussed all day how did you make out this year what prizes did you win mighty fine tobacco you've got there brother whitehead surprising to the uninitiated is the number of refining and finishing processes to which it has been found necessary to subject even the best tobacco that money can buy prize-winning quality tobacco the choicest most fragrant leaves grown in the Southland are what Liggett & Myers tobacco company purchases for Chesterfield every year after their long Aging in the warehouse the hogsheads of prime leaf are taken back to the factory and knocked open the hogsheads are mobilised at the factory in a certain but somewhat complex order corresponding to the requirements of the secret Chesterfield blending formula so many hogsheads of bright tobacco so many hogsheads of Maryland and so many of burning as it comes from the aging warehouse the tobacco is too stiff them dry to be handled easily so it has passed into a steam chamber where it remained for about 45 minutes to become more pliable when it leaves the steam chamber the tobacco is still somewhat compressed the leaves must be pulled apart and fluffed out now it is passed into a second chamber where it is conditioned again intensively in smaller portions before anything further is done the tobacco leaves must now be rid of their tough fibrous stems and this whole building where the tobacco is first received at the factory is called the stammering quick fingered girls untie the pliant hands of tobacco and feed the loose leaves into a machine which pulls the fine tender body away from the tough stem and veins in the center the stems are recovered and taken away to be processed into other products by chemical companies miles of endless belting and other miles of gravity chutes and air pressure pipelines provide motive power for the tobacco on its journey through the factory after being stemmed the tobacco is reconditioned to get it ready for blending which takes place in big bins fitted with mechanical mixers first several types of bright tobacco are mixed together tossed and blended like a tempting leaf salad different types of burly are also blended in a separate operation before being blended with the brights the brights Maryland and the burly's are then brought together in other blending machines large revolving drums not unlike the drums used to shake up lottery tickets but here there will be no drawing of winning or losing numbers all the contents will come out on the winning side and a delicate uniform blend to which at the last moment just the right amount of aromatic turkiish is added the finished blend is now pressed into a solid cake ready for slicing by teen rotary blades these knives whirl around like an airplane propeller then out onto the conveyor belt pours the fluffy harvest of blended tobacco's for your cigarette [Music] in the cigarette making room miles of paper ribbon from the acoustic Mountain mill are racing along ready to be rolled around the fragrant tobacco a cigarette is fashioned in a twinkling each machine makes 1,200 cigarettes a minute or 20 a package full every second and there are hundreds of these machines turning out billions of Chesterfields each month when the cigarettes arrived at the packaging machines they are not wrapped up as many people suppose but are inserted 20 at a time into packages cleverly fabricated before the cigarettes arrive the package bearing the portrait could be with each stamp use the federal treasury seven cents the stamps required for just that money can buy to keep Chesterfield back to what it's best comes last of all and the red cellophane pull tab to make the package easy to open and so into cartons you're the finest cigarettes your money can buy ready to travel to the ends of the earth to wherever man come as autumn wanes in the Southland the Tibet I call has been completed now the tobacco farmer can take his ease pal that on him depends a major American industry an industry which grows and prospers in the new here in the basement and they're both working away because of a crazy rain storm that we had last night and thankfully we did not lose any trees our neighbors did and they lost power and Internet and so we were pretty lucky this time uh so anyways I'm skip bells hammer I collect old school films and I show them to folks like you all over the world thanks to Facebook YouTube Twitter and twitch and wherever else people are finding us we I just did some some math and this is the seventh week we're gonna be wrapping up the seventh week and tomorrow we're actually gonna have a special guest large Nielson who is a former North Carolinian and now is in Austin Texas and I work with him when he was at the Alamo Drafthouse and he is now with the Austin Film Society and he has some films that he picked he's an awesome person to know and so he'll be here tomorrow for lunch and next week I actually lined up another guest from UCLA another film archivist there who he and I have shared our interest in strange religious films so there's that so that last film was tobacco man USA and obviously it was a very long advertisement for Chesterfield cigarettes and for how great north carolina is i have a friend who is a film collector archivist exhibitionist in durham who he is identified i think four different versions of that film he has I think three of them and then my copy including so they kept remaking it and kept editing and using footage and adding new footage and taking footage and this film is very popular I got this film from Buffalo Public Schools so that's how popular it was why they showed it in Buffalo Public Schools I don't know it has a lot of glorious assembly line footage which of course we love and it's a wonderful ad for smoking so there you go this next film that we're gonna watch we're gonna bring back some animation and this is by Ray Harryhausen before he was doing his feature films he set up a studio in his garage and was making these little fairytale animated shorts which are glorious and this shows some of his early handiwork so this is the story of King Midas enjoy [Music] once upon a time a long time ago there lived a king named Midas - was a very rich king but he was not a happy king for with all his treasures of gold and jewels this greedy man still longed for more wealth all day he would think only of gold restless nights as he tossed about on his royal bed he dreamed of more gold he wanted above all else to become the wealthiest man in the world and often he would forget his young daughter marigold whom he truly loved very much and so for long hours little marigold played on and lone among the lovely flowers of the spacious palace grounds bright shining yellow flowers were her favorites and she fashioned each day a bouquet of the most perfect of them to put upon the palace tables [Music] the choicest flower of the lot was always shared with her father but greedy King Midas only sighed and thought ah if only these flowers were real gold instead of merely golden color then they would truly be worth to having but marigold loved the sweet-smelling flowers just as they were and she hurried to place them in cool fresh water lest they wilt the bright yellow color of the flowers reminded Midas of the golden coins and the treasures hidden deep in his castle dungeon and he worried that perhaps someone had discovered them [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] who are you and how did you get in here cried King Midas and great surprise it is of no matter sat the stranger but why are you not happy King Midas you had more golden treasures and more golden coins than you can possibly count in a day just what is it that will bring you contentment what will satisfy you came - King Midas side I have long dreamed of becoming the richest man in the world I have only one wish I wish that everything I touch would turn to gold then I could be truly happy very well then the stranger said I will grant your wish tomorrow morning at early sunrise you shall have what you desire you shall have the golden touch use it wisely King Midas and now [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] not wanting to go to bed less he oversleep the King dozed that night in the chair at the head of his dining table at dawn the golden rays of sunlight pierced the palace windows king midas awoke at once eager to tour of his promised golden touch [Music] at first the king could not believe it possible but when he rapped upon the chair he knew it to be side the wood then one slight touch of his hand and his throne to turn to glittering gold now King Midas knew that as long as he lived he King Midas would be the wealthiest man of the world for who could have more gold than he [Music] [Applause] the golden touch maid came by this very action but as he sat down to eat breakfast Mary goal came in from the garden with an arm full of golden flowers look father she said sadly what has happened - they are hard and ugly and have no friends at all wonderful my dear said the king they are real gold imagine real gold come now sit down and eat your breakfast King Midas was very hungry but has he reached for an egg it turned to gold at his touch [Music] and as he picked up the loaf of bread to get to turned to gold all this will never do thought the king to himself such a costly breakfast and not a thing to eat he was angry with himself for ever having wished for the golden touch and he was angry at the stranger for having granted his wish it's saddens marigold to see her father so she wanted to comfort him but when the old king touched her arm poor little marigold became a statue of rigid god king midas surrounded by all his golden treasures now knew how all alone through his sobs he heard the voice of the stranger well my friend so you have made a discovery Midas wept for through his own greediness he had lost the one thing he true which would you rather have Midas the precious golden touch or a glass of cool water a glass of cool water cried - the golden touch or a crust of bread said the stranger a crust of bread answered Midas eagerly the golden touch or your daughter all my child my dear dear child wept - very well then if you wish to be relieved of the golden touch wash your hands in the water of the river outside your garden then take a vase of the same water and sprinkle it over anything you wish to change back to its former state remember me and the stranger disappeared King Midas lost no time in obeying the strangers words he reached for an empty pitcher and ran for the river to fill it with the precious water shortly he returned and at once sprinkle it over Mary goes head soeul all traces of the golden touch were gone and he began to hate the sight of anything made of gold the only goal that he did enjoy was the gold in his little daughter's hair and so we are told they lived happily ever after [Music] well Harryhausen man so great look him up maybe I'll put a link to Wikipedia you can see his work I have some other fairy tales that he's done in fables that he's done and I will probably show more of those as we can keep going I know what you're saying skip Special West German police this 135 thousand watt transmitter three times more powerful than any radio station in the United States is beamed at Czechoslovakia it broadcasts on a medium wave band so pointed out the narrator Ralph Ralph Bellamy and some of you might know him Ralph was in 190 different films and videos or TV shows but he might be best known to you guys as where is he Randolph Duke from Trading Places he was one of the rich people that switched dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy's character and then he later showed up and coming to America as a bum so it's funny that he plays this kind of capitalist jerk anyways I've got several films that are basically either blatant Snipes at communism or subtle smut Snipes at communism after World War Two there was a push by some organizations to try to pull back all the safeguards that were put into place during the Depression regarding banking labor etc and tried to just basically get rid of anything that FDR had anything to do with and so some of these films are ways to talk about those things and it was all because Soviets you know that we're getting there dirty claws into us and so I might show more of those films in the future but you know fascinating and Radio Free Europe didn't I think I wonder if jazz had more to do with people converting from communism into like to hear jazz and longing to hear the music that Radio Free Europe played less than the actual news the news um all right well it's speaking of rules here's a film about rules Joey well that was our geography lesson for today it was very interesting
