thank you well that got dark towards the end um I don't think that baby was sacrificed I think that was made up um and as far as the uh Voodoo ritual that is something that's still done today uh I did some work for a professor from duke who documented uh rituals in Haiti and had footage of one of these uh several day-long events where people were dancing in a frenzy and this was in the 90s or 2000s and nobody was sacrificed but there was a lot of dancing and a lot of drums and it was quite something um but yeah that just made up I think they made some stuff up at the end um anyways uh I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and scratch our our beards and our heads and go like what was that what's the deal with that uh this next film is a little bit more self-explanatory this is inventions inventions in America's growth enjoy [Music] foreign in the year of Our Lord 1850 I was working in the sun when my grandson Jonathan brought me a piece of paper exciting news he said McCormick's patent Virginia Reaper is coming a wheat cutting machine could a machine really Harvest Grain well I've known a lot of machines in my day some of them made quite a change in the way people live well I remember when I was a lad born in Massachusetts I was about the time of the war of independence in those days most everything was made by hand each family would span its own thread it was all a family could do to weave its own cloth and sow its own clothes and raise enough food to keep itself going we had few machines but we did have Yankee Ingenuity and we were always ready to try new things in our house we had one of those New Heating stoves invented by Ben Franklin Mr Franklin had pioneered many new American ideas back about 1750. his experiments with electricity led to the invention of the lightning rod [Music] in Rhode Island I saw my first real machine when I was 10 years old sent into the town of Pawtucket I was apprenticed to a spinning School they called it a school but we children worked the new spinning machines in the factory these machines have been preserved in museums because they were the beginning of the textile industry in the United States the ideas for these machines came from England where new factories were spinning thread and making cloth a young Englishman Named Sam Slater filled his head with details came to this country and from memory built these spinning jennies the machine spawned so fast they almost ran out of cotton in New England cotton was scarce in those days it grew well in the South but cleaning out the seeds was a chore they needed a better way to get the cotton ready for our spinning meals the invention that filled the need the cotton gin was built in just five weeks by Eli Whitney a Yankee school teacher visiting in Georgia this was one of the first important American inventions patented in 1794. in a few short years The South was growing 50 times as much cotton as before the gin and in the north industry grew what were the factories spinning and the Farm's Jenning we put Mars hand Spinning Wheel out of business machine cloth was cheap enough for everyone and better too but our New England water power was not enough to meet the needs of more and faster machines a new kind of power came into use Steam we had heard about the marvelous steam engines of Mr James Watt in England his first was a pump to lift water out of coal mines then about 1782 he hitched the steam to a shaft and a wheel that could turn other wheels for power but even before steam began to power our meals and factories it moved us on the water at first along the Hudson River Mr Robert Fulton planned a steamboat Coral The Claremont built her in 1807. steamboats made travel and shipping easier helped spread the Nation West I know in 1810 I took my family on the Claremont from Albany to New York starting on our journey West travel was much harder on the land it was a long journey for many of us across Pennsylvania to the Ohio River here where we struck water again we built ourselves a flat boat and floated all our belongings down the lazy current the river brought many settlers down into Ohio with more settlers needing Goods like salt and iron and warning to ship crops back East the Ohio and Mississippi rivers heard a new sound around the bend the steamboat made us feel that the cities of the East were closer we were one nation instead of a group of states thousands more came West until for some of us it got crowded in Ohio so we headed west again out here to Illinois where plenty of good land is to be had for the settling land so every Sun can have his own Farm and there was another machine that spread people into the West the steam locomotive from many inventors in England and the United States came locomotives Stevenson's rocket there was the John bull the Lafayette why they went 15 miles an hour sometimes the Dewitt Clinton backed into Albany New York and gave regular service to Schenectady the railroads grew and connected with each other first in the east of course but soon reaching out to where we needed them to cover the great distances in the West life moves fast in our year of 1850 why just over here a piece they've strung electric wires for that new telegraph invented by Samuel Morse in 1850 Telegraph wires reach across all our states to the Mississippi River and down to the Deep South why a letter might take a whole week to get back east but now news travels fast the end of the Mexican war for instance was on the telegraph to our newspapers soon after it happened the invention of the telegraph has helped the railroads grow they can keep track of their trains and help prevent wrecks businessmen buy and sell on the telegraph why these slender wires tie our nation together yes machines mean a lot to us in 1850 what will this Reaper do for us well we need a good machine for cutting wheat a good man can Harvest about one acre a day if he starts before sunup but some years Harvey's time is only a few days long still with the high price wheat brings back east a man might plant a hundred acres even if he loses some harvesting by hand well let's see about this Reaper it came from Cyrus McCormick's new Factory in Chicago they're building them by the hundreds the agent says it's much improved over that first Reaper that McCormick built in Virginia in 1831 Can this funny looking rig really Harvest our wheat and it does five times as fast as a harvest hand with a cradle it's easy to see that Farms will get bigger wheat will be cheaper with machines like this there's no limit to how much we can grow we'll make this Prairie Land the Bread Basket of the world yes machines have brought us a long way since I attended those spinning jennies back in Rhode Island who knows someday there may even be machines for sowing lots of reasons have made the United States grow so fast and so strong but it never would have happened without our machines and inventions and this grandson of mine what will those excited eyes see in his time by the 20th century yeah that guy was affecting that accent for entirely too long that well back in mayday yeah too much um let's look into the 20th century and see what's going on this is energy power from the sea enjoy at siba Gaga research scientists create power [Music] today scientists and Engineers are developing advanced technology to extract this heat and convert it to electricity ocean thermal energy conversion otec in the near future such otec power plants would provide pollutionless almost unlimited supplies of energy this is a report on progress towards harnessing the oceans energy resources the oceans of the world are storehouses of enormous amounts of solar energy a century ago the French scientists are San darsenal valve proposed using the temperature gradient between the sun heated surface waters and the cold deep to produce Electric Power he suggested warm surface waters could vaporize ammonia as at right driving a turbine to make electricity cold deep water in the condenser at left cools the ammonia to liquid and the cycle is repeated part of the electricity drives the water pumps the Surplus is available for any purpose in the late 1970s the first ocean thermal energy conversion system mini otec was built and installed aboard a barge moored three kilometers off Hawaii after beachfront assembly of the kilometer long deep water pipe also used as a single point Mooring the pipe was towed out to the waiting ocean heat power plant barge foreign water pipe and Barge are linked and activated [Music] the hot surface water piped into the evaporator Heats ammonia which drives a turbo generator to produce electricity then passes through a condenser where cold bottom water cools it to liquid again and the process is repeated for three months many otec generator powered only by the temperature gradient 27 degrees Centigrade on the surface 4 degrees centigrade in the Deep produces 57 kilowatts of power 40 kilowatts Drive the pumps and other otec Machinery the Surplus 17 power onboard instruments many otec demonstrates the otech principle a reliable ocean Energy power source [Music] in the early 1980s The Next Step an oil tanker is refitted as a full-scale floating otec laboratory and renamed the SS ocean energy converter the test site chosen for the project otec 1 is 19 kilometers off Hawaii to Anchor the ship a 4 000 foot single point Mooring is deployed shown here with stop-motion photography meanwhile on a Windswept Hawaiian beach the cold water pipe is assembled its triple cluster of 1.3 meter diameter buoyant flexible polyethylene pipes is 670 meters long almost half a mile foreign [Music] buoyancy collar enables the pipe to stand vertically when released from the ship the pipe which can deliver up to 78 000 gallons of water per minute is assembled on Railroad carriages stop motion photography shows deployment of the deep water pipe the million pound conduit extending across the entire Bay [Music] thank you the pipe is then towed by tugboats to the otec one Mooring and ship during delivery the flotation collar keeps the high front end afloat [Music] foreign is supported by a barge [Music] arriving at The Mooring the pipe is stretched across the surface of the sea then slowly back down into the deep 75-ton weight keeps it vertical as it goes down [Music] once in position divers check the pipe's flotation collar [Music] and a line underwater TV monitors and its stabilizing system for link up with the ship foreign [Music] to the ship is critical the stabilizing system and flotation collar which link ship and pipe must be made to function effectively the stabilizer system minimizes the effects of pipe motions due to deep sea currents the flotation collar allows the pipe to float aiding recovery should bad weather Force the laboratory vessel to return to Port foreign the SS ocean energy converter carries full-sized heat exchanges condensers evaporators and pumps and could in principle generate a megawatt of electrical power unlike many otec however it lacks turboelectric generators rather its purpose is to gather critical engineering performance data it is a floating otech laboratory probing problems that must be solved before full-scale commercial low-tech plants can be built what are the best designs for pipes and Heat exchangers our might marine life and corrosion affect otec systems what are the impacts of otec on the ocean environment how can the efficiency of evaporators and condensers be increased [Music] in time the components and Concepts feel tested aboard otec 1 could be employed in 40 to 80 megawatt demonstration otec power plants which would produce usable power otech could also power offshore smelters or refineries or chemical plants electrolyzing seawater to make hydrogen liquefacting air to make nitrogen combining hydrogen and nitrogen to make ammonia to be processed into fertilizer [Music] energy from the oceans might also be extracted utilizing underwater windmills powered by ocean currents or ocean wave energy tapped using Dam atolls which divert waves into an inverted bowl-shaped collector spinning a turbine a proposed tidal energy extraction system employs Rising waves to compress air to spin turbines and falling waves to draw in air to maintain the spin a reshaped seabed could funnel waves focusing their energy to spin turbines directly still other ways to draw on the ocean's various energy potentials currents waves Tides ocean heat sea and land winds salinity gradients and others are being sought [Music] the first otec power plants will probably be cited near major islands such as Puerto Rico or Hawaii which currently use about 600 000 barrels of imported oil per day other near future otech locations include Guam French Polynesia Singapore and Rio de Janeiro as well as Florida and other Coastal States [Music] ocean surface temperature profiles suggest the best otec locations tinted red or orange are about 20 degrees latitude from the equator the Gulf of Mexico Coastline alone might generate as much as 50 000 megawatts of power in a few decades otec ocean thermal energy conversion an energy source which is continuous pollutionless almost unlimited and requires no new technical breakthroughs otec solar energy from the sea to benefit everyone another way of turning the sun's power into useful energy science screen report has been produced by siba Geiger Corporation with headquarters in Ardsley New York as part of its continuing program in support of Science Education [Music] foreign [Music] yeah so science um yeah I so a couple things going on here one is it's fascinating the company that made this film I found earlier films it made uh and they're all press release kind of newsreel types of things so they basically take a press release from some company like Sears or some company that makes tires and they create a news story around it and then they would shop it around and it would be shown on television or be rented and shown at Civic events or whatever or in school even um and so this is a more formalized version of it this a screen science digest which talks about 70s basically Technologies um and so it's the same thing it's it's really kind of fascinating and they found that they got sponsorship by Tech or industrial companies in a region so sibagi uh there's some power companies there's some foundries um uh and that would be then distributed to schools so this would be shown to a bunch of school kids and said oh well here's potential energy it's not oil and um what an exciting future and it's great that you guys looked it up on comments on YouTube to see what uh how it's manifested itself all right so I'm going to do this real quick we've been doing the toe tapping tournament and I've been asking you folks for um let super special except for four things my feet they always seem to get in the way somehow I'm always falling down and the other kids laugh at me things are never the way I want them to be never well can't you see that I beautiful inside can't you see the fear I tried to hide in real life I am never the things I want to be I'm not strange I'm just clumsy but there's no one who can see that in my dreams I'm a lion King of the beasts and there's no there's no in the jungle my keep peace of a flower and I talk to the birds [Music] singing songs that have no words [Music] in my dreams [Music] proud as me see that we're beautiful inside [Applause] to see I fear we try to hide [Music] I am [Music] beautiful that I am [Music] really glad that we like each other now Jennifer but but could you let go I can't breathe oh I'm sorry Courtney well it's all right if I had arms I'd do the same thing it's not easy to believe you're beautiful but if you're beautiful in your dreams and you're beautiful for real oh I just got my glasses all wet well at least you know when you lick of all the dreams you've ever had which is your favorite my favorite dream is that I'm writing the biggest most beautiful horse in the world and the playground put together my favorite is that I belong to the president's daughter and she rides me back and forth in a straight line and not in the circle I get the picture you want to ride and you want someone to ride you well this is as good a place as any for dreams to come true so Jennifer take corny for a ride no why not you want to don't you you dream about it I can sure you can who said you can everybody I'll show them they're wrong I'm too clumsy only because you think you are fall often everyone anyway I can't ride with these so take them off but I need them if they improve your vision glasses they're wonderful but yours are just frames there are no lenses in your glasses they don't help you to see they help you not to see yeah like your blinders help you not to see do you think so I know so if you want to do more if you want to be more you've got to see more and feel more and try more turn around the corner this way [Music] open up toe tappers in there there was definitely a big musical thing in there with lots of dancing and singing that I liked but again magnificent major is so good and I think it's the the grand polony or great polony like he pushes it way over the top but that's just me anyways I think I've only got two more unicorn Tails I have not found them yet but um then that's it I think I think that's the entire series I need to to kind of check against some things but again the guy at the beginning in the denim jacket uh brutally murdered in the late 80s so and there's a horrible um mini series documentary about it uh because he was one of the people that kind of trained Chippendale dancers and helped make Chippendales a national phenomenon yes um let's see I got some great votes keep voting click on this but it's crazy uh the number of uh uh watches for that it's just this is this happened last year with the film uh story of lead which was a 30 minute film about how LED his mind um uh so
