so so so so so so so hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show uh i've been busy tabulating votes from yesterday's toe tapping tourney um day one i'll have results uh later in this broadcast um it is the the voting has has ended for this uh first day but tomorrow we'll have the second day and you'll have more opportunities to vote um there's some surprising uh things in here um but anyways uh that last film was uh an untitled i think he just said cats written on the outside home movies cats and it was actually in a batch of educational films that i got from a school auction so i want to say it was like somewhere eastern north carolina near new bern um and there were a couple of home movies in there which is really interesting to me and has always been uh i think that that you know a big collection of films oftentimes attracts other films and other types of media um so for example when um they're we're talking about the universal fires uh years ago probably 20 years ago more than that um where they lost a bunch of films that everybody was saying like oh no no no we just lost some films and prints and it's okay everything's all right and i'm like no i think that there's something that was lost and what was lost was actually a bunch of master tapes for sound recordings um some pretty major things that just don't exist anymore uh which is very unfortunate but you know the idea is like oh well you have a bunch of racks with a bunch of media on it so we'll donate it to you so that's why i always am interested when i get these collections of films is it's like oh it's all library stuff and it's like except this real this is really odd um somebody commented like uh rich people this is back when rich people had home movie cameras that this is before and i don't have a date on this at all um and you can tell there's a lot of damage from it uh that it it has had a lot of damage over the years um but the fact that they spent so much time on cats tells me that they were rich because 16 millimeter film was not cheap and the fact that somebody shot multiple reels of 16 of cats and then processed it and then spliced it together tells me that they had some money to to play with um in the back in the days i've actually scanned 35 millimeter home movies of really rich people um it's like wow you know this is before 16 was available and they hired somebody to shoot 35 of um different events in their life and those are the very rich people um all right so uh this was a request uh this next film um from someone who i'm hoping will be a surprise guest on the attorney uh the final attorney with found footage festival and i'm not gonna i can't say much more beyond this because i haven't really pitched it to him yet um he's enthusiastic about coming on the show and which is great uh because he used to work with centron films and so it would be great to have him but anyways so this is something he requested mischievous marks enjoy wow [Music] hello and welcome to away you go first contestant come right in here sir are you ready your first question what do you call these curved punctuation marks [Music] that's wrong but you still have one more chance to play away you go what do you call the mark right before the s that indicates possess one more second ah that's wrong audience what's the answer of course well you've not only didn't win the prizes but sir away you go but for being such a wonderful sport let's give this gentleman a great big hand and that's the way we play away you go now remember ladies and gentlemen sometimes someplace somewhere you may be a contestant on a show like this so you would better watch and listen and learn the sign indicates the main idea or main context of a sentence the reason i bring this up is hold it who are you what does the i stand for interruption is that what you yes i was going to ask yes that's what i am an interruption or you may call me an insert i may call you an interruption or an insert either one what do you interrupt besides me sentences i interrupt sentences wow well i do it like would you show me that in writing sure i do it well by using my arm i see that indicates the interruption with a dash exactly right this is a dash this is two dashes i wonder if you could yes i can explain with two dashes i can insert a comment into the middle of a sentence show me okay let's pretend this represents a sentence and what is the main thing that satan says it says this game is vital and you are going to insert your comment into that sentence yes believe me now ordinarily if you wanted to insert a mild aside you do it with commas this game believe me is vital a very mild interruption i only get in there when i want my presence noticed and emphasized here's how i do it this game believe me is vital that is more emphatic when you separate the interrupting remark with dashes the reader has to pause and notice it exactly what if you don't want that much emphasis but you want more separation than you get with commas in that case i use the elbows i wedge in this way this game believe me is vital parentheses you elbow your way in with parentheses yes look now at the various examples parentheses give more remoteness to the insert than commas do and dashes give a more forceful separation than do parentheses i must say that seems purely a matter of choice yes often it is writer's choice here's a way of deciding which to use henry my brother is absent my brother is a casual aside not too remote from the rest of the sentence commas will do henry he's my favorite is absent he's my favorite isn't really related to the rest of the sentence it's a personal comment inserted by the writer it's remote from the main thought parentheses indicate that remoteness if you wish to give the added comment more emphasis henry good heavens is absent use dashes it's possible to write well without ever using dashes or parentheses but if you learn how to use them they do give you additional ways to express yourself [Music] it's gone fred what did you see my letter no i had a letter here it's missing of course it's missing i know that how do you know that because somebody put an apostrophe here huh an apostrophe people always put apostrophes where letters are missing what sure everybody does it i'll show you now ask me what time it is what time is it it is nine of the clock why do you say of the clock because that's the full expression you're just used to the fact that we condense it and write nine o'clock that's why it has an apostrophe to show that some of the original letters are missing when you read a condensed expression with an apostrophe in it how do you know what letters are missing well it's kind of a game and you have to figure out what letters are missing now have a seat and i'll show you some condensed words and let's see if you can figure out what letters are missing first a word that i just used when i said let's see what letters are missing let's when you said let's see you meant let us see so the missing letter indicated by the apostrophe is you good how about this contraction as in i'll show you i'll do something is short for i will do something the apostrophe indicates the letters w i are missing good try these contractions that's easy he is good she is fine it is right on now i understand why fred knew my letters were missing an apostrophe indicates where letters have been removed for another use of the apostrophe let's tune in on this commercial i'm a borrower but i like to know who belongs to what and what belongs to whom that's why i use apostrophe s that way i know that this is oscar's desk it's dixie's chair [Laughter] amy's lamp [Music] and i'm wearing jane's coat if you have friends who possess things give them the recognition they deserve give them apostrophe s [Music] remember for nouns that possess use apostrophe s the apostrophe s may also be used for the woman's shoe the boy's shirt and people's problems put a sense of belongingness into your life use apostrophe s let's see this is bill's cap but whose glove and whose hat when we're not definite whom we're talking about we use indefinite pronouns such as somebody or anyone so when making them possessive we treat those words like nouns and write somebody's hat anyone's glove so let's change our slogan a bit and say for nouns or indefinite pronouns that possess use apostrophe s hold on hold on i take exception to the statement that all nouns that possess take apostrophe s don't they note these words moses socrates the supremes here's a letter we see from the society of sibilance the sibilance society sincerely suggests words ending in certain sibilant sounds such as should not be made silly or sounding with additional s's quite right if we added an apostrophe and s to these words we would have to say moses's socrates's the supreme says so we make such words possessive by adding only an apostrophe we do not add another s so we can read moses mountain socrates society the supreme's album now that's much better than the supreme says album don't you think so we should correct our rule retake for correction action remember for nouns that possess use apostrophe or apostrophe s notice something all of our examples have in common the apostrophe and the apostrophe s are added to the original word the word ahead of the apostrophe remains unchanged cover the apostrophe or the apostrophe s and the original word is still there why is that useful to know i'll give you a problem that will show you why this word needs an apostrophe where would you put it well it depends doesn't it if we do it this way g i r l apostrophe s what does that tell us it tells us that the original unchanged noun is girl singular if we make our possessive case this way g-i-r-l-s apostrophe what does that tell us it tells us that the original noun was girls plural so we find another advantage in adding only an apostrophe to words that end in difficult es sounds it helps us tell singular from plural if it's one person as in the boy's overcoat we add apostrophe s if it's more than one boy as in the boy's choir add only an apostrophe look ahead of the apostrophe and you will see that in each case the original word remains unchanged thank you for your attention it's time once again to play away you go contestant how do you make the possessive out of this word and an apostrophe yes [Applause] but how do you make the possessive out of the plural form of this same word and an apostrophe only that's correct and away you go oh it's zany all right um yeah so there's others in that uh series the fearless punctuation series that uh centron put out and it's wacky um some people said hey that looks like slim good buddy no he's that's too tall i've met some slim good body and he's he's shorter than me um he's like around five feet and some inches but um very nice guy um i saw him perform with a bunch of school children at a um downtown um auditorium it was uh it was a lot of fun except he kept having technical problems um and was mad at the sound person who really didn't do a good job so there's that um speaking of famous people from the 70s uh here's a another peter thomas uh america's um sleep machine narrator i i know countless people that fall asleep to peter thomas and his talk of blood spatter and alibis and such so here's your chance to live and this is part of that civil defense series about disasters and this one's interesting because it deals with the psychological responses to a disaster and the long lasting effects of what happens afterwards so here it is [Music] [Music] oh [Music] so uh all of you are here because you have happened to have been in a disaster of one kind of another and all of you have developed some emotional problems as a result of it some people do and you are one of them and if you keep on silent or crying we will never know what happened and we will never be able to help you i would like you really to encourage you to start talking and tell us what has happened two summers ago we were at the beach and i was there with uh my husband al and our two children and we had a hurricane warning and i except it got very bad for lisa oliver and her family a late summer vacation at the beach began with every hope for a wonderfully relaxing week [Music] but suddenly in the wild pounding of hurricane winds and rains that bright hope turned into a tragedy of the loss of two small children [Music] for parents the agony of losing children is beyond anything describable but this agony is increased tenfold when parents blamed themselves entirely for the loss often the fact that the tragedy was caused by a natural disaster over which they had absolutely no control cannot soothe their minds they internalize their problems a normal existence becomes impossible was anyone living in the house yes and there's a oliver boy and his wife and two little children the little children they got drowned it's indeed very tragic i can understand you know how you feel and no you can't because it was my fault because i wanted to stay al didn't want to stay i wanted to stay i wanted to see that hurricane and i don't have any more children i was selfish i didn't think of my children i i thought of you have made a mistake but you could not have predicted of what would happen when you made it people do make mistakes but i think you are making another mistake right now you are holding it all in you are not talking about it to all and even maybe to other people and that's why you are here we want you to talk we want you to talk about it and tell us how you feel in disasters people very often are confronted by unexpected situations which may not affect them physically but may affect them emotionally these emotional effects vary in intensity from minor discomfort to severe anxiety today more attention is being given to people's emotional reactions to emergency situations mental health professionals working with individuals or groups encourage people to share their experiences this is the vital first step in helping these people understand why they feel as they do the vital first step in relieving an invisible but very real hurt you have to make a decision a decision is do you want to stay the way you are or really do you want to start again building up the trust you had in each other and the love that you have for each other and tell us about yourself what brought you here um i go to school out of state when i heard over the radio that there had been an earthquake in my hometown yeah i called right away and couldn't get through for two days and there was nothing i could do my mother works in the hospital and it collapsed around her i thought there was a good chance that my mother and my sister could have um been killed and the things that go through your mind and i just realized how much um i love them and what would i do without them so i decided to go home to be with them people not directly caught up in a disaster can nevertheless be affected emotionally by it people far away from a disaster people whose friends or relatives are caught up in that disaster can feel great anxiety because of their inability to help even though they may realize that their presence would have made little difference they are unable to escape the feeling that they should have been nearby to share problems and dangers with their loved [Music] ones but there seems to be some problem with this why are you here what brought you here uh well my mother see um i quit i i withdrew from school for a while are you going back uh when i um it just depends on how i feel right now i don't want to go back to school i just don't have any desire to be there i just i want to be with my um with my family my sister took care of your mother in the disaster but you were aware you couldn't do that so now you want to be the super caretaker and take care of yourself i just failed that um i make things a little i don't know i just every time i'm away from them i can't every time when i'm not with my sister or my mother i just i just think i'm really very good feeling to be always able to be of help sometimes it's not quite possible is it well i wasn't it of any help at all yeah as a matter of fact you were safe at the time in which your mother was in danger exactly it just happened that you were safe at that moment i'm wondering who's going to take care of you oh do you mean what i mean that at this time you are still very young and you are the student you are the child in the older child but you are in the fam and you want to take care of your mother don't you want somebody to take care of you to take care of me that's right um well nothing's happened well i guess that's why i'm here yes i think so because you really would like someone to take care of you but you feel so guilty about it as if this was unnatural on your part now you want to be still super caretaker and take care of mother instead i wonder is it really necessary well it's just how i feel the chuck you heard what ann said is it something like this that happened to you well apparently um i have some of the same kinds of feeling i happen to have been on a camping trip with my son and you know we are very close uh scott and i are uh have done many things together we go to movies together we play ball together we're very very close and we were planning this camping trip for quite a while and uh so we got up into the woods and suddenly uh there we were in the middle of this forest fire [Music] so even people who handle emergency situations with a great deal of assurance may still suffer emotional stress afterwards often they find themselves dwelling on what might have happened to themselves or others even though they escape physically unharmed they may still experience persistent feelings of anxiety due to the event of having been thrust into a frightening situation over which they have no control as a matter of fact from what you are telling me you did a terrific job not only preparing for the trip but actually saving yourself and yet you feel so bad and so guilty about it why what happened well i still look back on the possibility of um scott perishing in in that fight a couple of times i ran ahead of him and was very selfish in my actions i really didn't watch for him and as i looked back on that that could have been the danger that could have been the turning point in the loss of scott do you know what i think you are saying or doing from what you described about yourself and you know your son you were always on this big white horse and you were always the perfect father you were doing everything right and nothing has happened and suddenly you are off the horse and then you are saying to yourself gee i'm human and you're saying to yourself that's bad is it and i think what has happened is that he was always the perfect father and now suddenly he isn't because he has maybe made a mistake which i don't think he did maybe he endangered his son if she didn't do it on purpose with premeditation no none of us did of course not how about that you suddenly see that yourself don't you i know how it feels because you know i work at the san fernando valley child guidance clinic and in 1971 we went through the earthquake people should of course prepare themselves as thoroughly as possible for emergency situations the more thoroughly people are prepared the more realistically they will react in an emergency [Music] emergencies place an enormous emotional stress on people even those who deal adequately with day-to-day situations may find themselves temporarily unable to cope with a crisis generated by exposure to a major natural disaster or other emergency event for those who cannot cope with these frightening experiences a new recognition of their problems has recently emerged and along with that recognition the techniques available to the mental health professional can help this help begins with sharing not bottling up deeply felt personal emotions most people have relatives or friends a minister or a doctor who will listen to and understand concerns and fears engendered by an emergency spoken these concerns and fears tend to shrink locked inside they may grow but if sharing problems is not sufficient help from a private doctor or local mental health center should be sought for as surely as a broken leg must be set emotional trauma caused by exposure to emergency situations must be attended to you know with really understood today i believe how talking together about what has happened particularly in disasters or in any crisis can help people i just wish that um those people who really do develop emotional problems following a disaster or following a crisis could seek some help like you did that was really very good and i'm glad you came and and i and i hopefully that this session helped all of you i feel a bit better not even at least it's a start [Music] shame on skip that was a lulu sorry know i don't know what haven't come up really good vocabulary um because i'm not a sports guy and they're sports guys so anyways here's the bracket so far and we'll see who won uh so uncle smiley versus uh acid uh acid trounced uncle smiley there were it was surprising uh initially there were a lot of uncle smiley uh votes uh from people who i know groan whenever i showed uncle smiley so it was kind of interesting to see uh so asset has moved on to the quarterfinals uh drugs are like that uh trounce vd play it safe that really nice but love ballot about venereal disease so drugs are like that are there so they'll be taking on acid tomorrow uh no not tomorrow friday um let's see duck and cover trounce munchers uh although at first i thought that munchers was gonna take it uh so uh and then the um is a career in whatever the what you're gonna do song got beat out by malacca palika do skip two um and so they will be taking on duck and cover tomorrow no friday yeah i don't have my schedule right um and then so tomorrow i'm gonna highlight uh we've got books are burning for burning which is from magnificent major versus lsd insider insanity telezonia pick up the phone versus teeth are a good thing to have a song plaque shake hands with danger which is so popular is going to take on the canadian let's find something better to do and videos for everybody is going to take on destruction fun or dumb uh so tomorrow uh is the time to tune in and we'll probably start about 1 30 eastern standard time for that katrina and my wife will join us and it's funny everybody seems to have different criteria on how they're picking songs and some of them were definitely tough and so i appreciate your feedback on that and so that will happen at 1 30 tomorrow um i should say that if
