foreign hello everybody hi how's it going oh wait I'm supposed to look up there the camera's already there the camera's there not there yeah not there yeah there hi uh welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films about rural Quebec UE yeah I missed it yeah that was from uh that was Bell and Howell made that but it was distributed through Mogul Brothers collection which we did through the Oregon archive boy so there's lots of stuff there uh anyways uh Katrina hi everyone good to joining us today because we uh are announcing the winners of the toe tapping tournament and we're gonna go to the for first and second bracket uh uh the left and right bracket oh so we're gonna go to the the big board um this is who won uh so keep the promise in Jackson junior high keep the promise that a wonderful but weird slideshow Anthem by Pillsbury uh the gift and I'm mad at you um I'm at U1 uh Eat Your Heart Out versus seeing through commercials seeing through commercials one and different kinds of Love versus run for your life the ELO uh knockoff run for your life one so Lip Smacker one Lip Smacker yes commercials once and that was something that you and Kevin actually said oh this should be on the uh toe tapping tournament and I said wait a minute did I have it before and I didn't so that's why we entered that in uh that is a fake commercial uh so what we're gonna do is uh run through the songs real quick and for the next round or whatever yeah yeah yeah so the next round I'm gonna bounce this over um here are who's up um is it the quarterfinals so this is this is gonna get tough um because there was definitely some songs that were listed in that left bracket that were pretty tight and close so this is going to be even tougher and the reason why we're doing this of course is to pick uh our toe tapping uh tournament finalists but we're also going to pick the top four that are going to compete against the found footage Festival so which uh we spent time with them last week and uh we uh again said like look we're going to compete again but you guys have to dress as clowns and beat us Thanksgiving before the next competition right because otherwise they might try to get that off the table and which they already did Joe already said well maybe we'll just do double or nothing I said I knew you were gonna do that and no that's not the case all right so we're gonna get started uh we're gonna watch fast food and versus people working with data enjoy [Music] [Music] thank you now the story here is about a Gala look great but you got it in a hair that you ought to lose weight then she felt guilty about the stuff she ate Fab diet you name it he'd try it now her little brother Alex just wanted to be tall so one day he could play basketball bad move and he console himself with junk food now Alex thought Eric was strong and cool and it came for some poaching every day after school thought he'd try hold it hold it and it kept it quiet and then one day Karen spotted Derrick and went out of her board instantly she was overboard there are different sides of me before my personality I work with people and data and things and each side of me has a song to sing now I can be the kind of people who prefers to work with people helping you or serving in some ways [Music] and I'm the one who like to sing whenever I'm at work with things using things is what I like to do work with things of different size with different uses to work with things is what I love to do and I feel that there's nothing greater than to work with facts and data information is the stuff I use investigators gather Clues and commentators give the news data is the kind of work I choose so come along with me and see which of me you'd like to be people things we're all different sides of you know who we all fit together [Music] [Music] [Music] a zip code [Music] fewer mistakes no time ever lost a lot less handling along the way [Music] food groups every day I'm in the dairy group as you see you gotta eat some of my friends and me buttermilk and yogurt too cream and cheesy the yellow or blue food good [Music] food always fulfill the vomits [Music] won't let it grow [Music] by Road [Music] bill grow moving ahead working to spread the promises new day the feeling runs deep working to keep [Music] bubbles headed toward the goals bring it on him so we can take control [Music] be back give it back Jennifer you make me very angry you're playing bury me I want to throw the ball with you it makes me want to scream I feel like pushing and hurting the people that I see I wish I knew how to make them as angry as they make me what do you do what do you do on the outside what do you do with anger You Can't Hide what do you do [Music] foreign [Music] Lip Smacker candy bar so much fun when your tummy goes yum with a Lip Smacker candy bar let your lips let your lips yes [Music] laughs [Music] run for your life [Music] you catching the devil today [Music] no more [Music] oh you can't live much looser when you rise [Music] yeah it's hard I'm seeing it in the comments that uh people are already kind of racking their brains but I'm also getting emails for people who've made their decision including one Rick K who did it even before we started so some people feel pretty strongly about it um but yeah thanks uh for watching and please vote to skip at avgeeks.com you'll have until uh next Wednesday and uh we'll announce the the top four the Final Four and then we'll do another uh I don't know if we'll do another week or if we should just well we'll talk that through but figure it out yeah but uh yeah thanks for tuning in uh I'm going to reward you uh or punish you with this film about Wood Finishing oh enjoy don't make this deter them from voting [Music] suppose you have just completed this piece of work you're now faced with a question of how is it to be finished do you want an opaque finish or a clear natural finish should it be darker than it is will it be subjected to rough usage or excessive moisture or perhaps you want it to appear as a more expensive material there are wood finishes that can meet any or several of these requirements but if the Finish is not selected wisely all the hours that have gone into your project will have been wasted and the potential beauty of a fine piece of craftsmanship will not have been realized however before any finish can be applied you must have a smooth surface on which to work to smooth a piece of wood select an abrasive that is just finer than the coarsest scratches in the wood too fine and abrasive will do the job but will take much longer the abrasive you should use will take out the coarse scratches in the material and leave finer scratches the next finer abrasive you use will take out the scratches left by the preceding abrasive and leave still finer scratches and so on until the piece is as smooth as you desire dents may be raised by repeatedly applying a cloth soaked in hot water until the dent is raised slightly above the surrounding surface then it may be sanded down flush if there are small cracks called checks or nail holes they may be filled with stick shellac or wood repair that matches the color of the wood any such repairs must be sanded smooth all sanding should be done with the grain this process is easier if the Sandpaper is wrapped around the block power Sanders such as this one are fast and efficient but rotary Sanders tend to leave scratches across the grain the corner where a flat surface meets an edge is called an heiress the Razor Edge should be taken off however avoid excessive or uneven rounding of the heiresses curved edges should be sanded only with a forward motion with the grain after sanding clean the work first with a brush and then with a clean cloth and it is ready for the Finish the simplest finish to apply is paint and if the wood is not attractive or if you want to match other furniture or cover it for some other reason paint is a very effective way of doing so and paint can be obtained in any color however before painting cover knots and pitchy places with shellac or if you're using a pitchy wood such as Pine it should be given a first coat of shellac the Seal of the pitch in so it will not penetrate and discolor the paint if you are using an open grain wood such as fur you may want to apply a first coat of some commercial sealer whatever material is used the first coat will act as a primer and will raise the grain so you need to sand this coat with very fine sandpaper the object should get three coats of paint with each coat getting progressively thicker be sure that each coat is Thoroughly dry before applying the next if you like the grain pattern in your wood there are a variety of finishes you can use to show yet protect this pattern the piece can be bleached with one of the commercial bleaches on the market to lighten it however these are strong chemicals and should be handled with care if you want the wood to be darker or if you want a color change there are wood stains there are three types of stain in common use oil stain water stain and spirit stain any of these will bring out the Grain and enrich the color or change the appearance of an inexpensive wood such as red gum to that of a more expensive wood such as Walnut oil stains while they do not penetrate the wood deeply and have a tendency to fade are the easiest to apply and they come in a variety of colors water stains penetrate the wood deeply they are transparent inexpensive and give best results when used on hardwood however they raise the grain which makes sanding necessary between coats Spirit stains are pigments dissolved in alcohol they penetrate more deeply than other stains but will fade on long exposure to light Spirit stains are most commonly used in refinishing old furniture since they will penetrate a surface where some other finish has previously been used all stains are applied in much the same way Begin by testing the stain on a scrap of the same wood to be sure you will get the color you want for best results apply two coats this test should be run with all finishing materials since end grain takes stain more rapidly than side grain it should be treated with a dilute solution of the stain or in the case of oil stain with a coat of linseed oil this prevents the end grain from becoming too dark stain the under surfaces and lower parts first brush or wipe the stain on evenly and rapidly going with the grain brush toward the edges to avoid runs it runs occur Bryce them out immediately excess water stain can be mopped up with a brush but if the coat is smooth it should be allowed to dry into the wood if you are using oil stain wipe the surface with a clean cloth before drying begins this will help reduce an even shade if the color is still too light apply another coat allow sufficient drying time before a filler or sealer is applied in the case of oil stain at least 24 hours if you are using a close grained wood such as Pine sycamore maple or Locust it may be filled and sealed with a liquid agent such as shellac if you are using an open grained wood such as mahogany white oak or walnut a paste filler should be used the paste filler should be colored to match the wood or stain and should be thoroughly stirred and thin with Benzene or a thinner recommended by the manufacturer to the consistency of a thick paste the filler is brushed on with the grain and lets stand until the gloss disappears this requires from 4 to 10 minutes the filler surface is now ran in a circular motion to pack the filler into the pores the excess is then removed by rubbing across the grain with a rag streaks May then be removed by rubbing lightly with the grain after you have attained the proper color and filled and sealed the wood with a coat of sealer or thin shellac it is time to select your final finishing material shellac varnish and lacquer are the materials most commonly used white shellac is best for General use it sets quickly and becomes quite hard when dry however it becomes soft and turns white when exposed to excessive moisture or heat shellac can be applied over stained or natural wood it is used as a liquid filler or sealing coat or it can be used alone building up a smooth protective finish with several coats after cleaning the object thoroughly prepare the first coat of shellac made up of one part alcohol and one part shellac lay the shellac on in narrow strips with a good quality varnish brush about one and a half inches wide use long fast even Strokes working toward the heiresses if any spots seem to have been missed leave them to be covered by the next coat after at least eight hours drying rub the project down lightly with very fine sandpaper and steel wool use a small piece held lightly with the fingertips and work only a small area at a time clean the project thoroughly and apply the second and third coats in the same manner as the first using progressively thicker shellac for a fine finish use a felt pad and rub the final coat with pumice stone and rubbing oil and then with rotten Stone and rubbing oil always rubbing with the grain lacquer dries quickly and produces a hard surface and a fine finish that is not affected by changes in temperature it is comparable to good Spar Varnish when exposed to moisture in most cases it is wise to apply one or two coats of lacquer sealer before lacquer is applied because the ingredients in some lacquers may dissolve shellac paint and similar materials used as undercoats lacquer may be obtained clear or in a variety of colors like there may be either sprayed or brushed on however spraying type lacquer is not the same as brushing type lacquer and the two should not be interchanged be sure you have the correct one brushing type lacquer should be applied over a smooth coat of lacquer sealer with a good quality camel's hair or fish hair brush slow on the brushing type lacquer with the brush and do not brush over the same place more than once lacquer must be applied as rapidly as possible and the brush Strokes finished out to the heiresses after three or four hours for drying sand the rough spots lightly with very fine sandpaper and you're ready for the second coat two coats are usually sufficient when applied over a surface that has been sealed sand the final coat lightly with very fine waterproof sandpaper and rubbing oil for a smooth velvet finish rub and polish the final coat with rotten Stone and oil flat varnish dries in about four hours it acts as a preservative and retains the beauty of natural wood it produces a soft dull finish without rubbing and is used on interior Woodwork and furniture in applying varnish great pains must be taken to avoid dust the brush must be perfectly clean buy small cans of varnish and use a new one for each operation if possible as the scum will cause a rough surface do not apply Varnish in the shop but find a more dust-free room and never lay the brush down anywhere during the operation allow 21st for drying and sand with a small piece of very fine sandpaper do not do this sanding in the finishing room apply the second and third coats as you did the first sanding between each coat use a new can for the last coat and a new brush if possible rub on finishes are relatively new they can be applied over natural or stained wood they are fast drying and have an oil or wax base the rub on finish must be applied on a clean surface but unlike resin based finishes while this finish is wet it is relatively free from the ill effects of dust this dust free quality makes it possible to rub it on in a busy shop and still get a fine finish and finally to add polish and protection to any project apply a coat or two of paste wax in brief then be sure that your project is ready before you apply any finish decide what you want in colors and textures and experiment to be sure that you can produce them for safety's sake be sure to put all oily rags in a closed metal container take pains with every step of the finishing process so you know that everything will be just the way you want it Wood Finishing is difficult but if you handle these finishing materials in a skilled manner they will work for you and the resulting product will be worthy of a true Craftsman [Music] all uh toe tapping and dancing and singing and uh there's some solid information that we have to relate to you as part of our status as an infotainment or edutainment provider uh that's our tax status [Laughter] um yeah thanks people are voting already man it's gonna be close there's a lot of this back and forth back and forth uh it's pretty great okay so behind me we have a uh film scanner setup and um I'm gonna we're gonna watch a film uh Magic Hat this is part of the uh unicorn tale series and there might be some singing and dancing in here uh it'll definitely reek of the 70s so be prepared enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you The Emperor's New Clothes is a story about a king who wanted so badly to be a great and wise ruler that he was tricked into believing in a suit of magic clothes instead of believing his own eyes our modern version is about a lonely boy who made the same mistake Once Upon a Time trying let's have that Howard [Music] see you later [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] there it goes [Music] you and your hat foreign [Music] [Music] hey how come you're all alone no one will ever like me didn't I like you without the Hat yeah but you're different than anybody else everybody's different from everybody else uh this is a unicorn for example but it was just a horse well it could fool people into thinking it was just a horse if it removed its beautiful gold horn and sort of combed the tear over its forehead like that but he'd still be the same unicorn underneath it's just like whether you have the magic hat or not you're still the same Andy yeah but the kids wouldn't have liked me if I didn't have the Hat how do you know why should they little night I can see the magic everywhere [Music] baby so where's the magic where is the magic of me [Music] isn't there a special magic word I can say to make them see all of the magic where is [Music] it to believe you're special you're special [Music] isn't it the neatest [Music] you mean it even though I don't have that well looking at it scientifically the Hat didn't make us like how but we still like you when the magic [Music] I'm special [Music] [Applause] [Music] I am the magic of me [Music] [Applause] walk [Music] landed in the back of a garbage truck and I had to follow it all the way to a dump and Flushing I just wanted you guys to like me [Music] when the magic hats are gone and there's nothing of your sleep it's not easy to believe your special your specials [Music] I am imagine [Music] thank you Okay so lots of interesting things here uh the kid with the jacket at the end uh with a unicorn jacket uh was in over the edge he plays Carl he plays the main character uh if you have not seen over the edge and you want to see the next level of uh what Bad News Bears from the 70s would have turned into um where you have a bunch of high school kids middle school kids who are just bored because there's nothing to do in this Suburban development over the edge is so good it was Matt Dillon's first film I totally recommend it it didn't do well because it was I just don't think the the studio knew what to do with it but man it's awesome um the other thing is the guy at the beginning of the film that was kind of introded it with the denim jacket uh and the big thick eyebrows that was Nick denoya the director and producer of the Unicorn uh tales series who also um helped kind of create Chippendales as a national phenomenon he did not come up with it by himself but he kind of turned it into this professional Beefcake entertainment uh thing pop culture thing and then he was brutally murdered execution style uh okay there's a Hulu documentary about it which I don't know watched the first episode and then I don't I didn't feel compelled to watch the rest of it because I kind of didn't care but uh yeah that's uh that's the thing about films from the 70s is that they have long long fingers that connect to other things um and so that you didn't think that that was a toe tapping enough there was some good stuff in there but yeah nothing that like hooks like a magnificent major so there's still two or three more of these unicorn Tales uh films that I I've Unearthed recently that we can watch and maybe one of those is going to be better but I don't know um but anyways hey hold a cow you guys have really been um chugging away uh at the the toe tapping tournament uh the quarterfinals um We're not gonna play them again today but we will play them probably tomorrow and and Friday um thanks for tuning in it's very much appreciated thank you for the bus error for the um for the money uh he or he or she hit the button to do a super thanks uh but you can also hit the Thumbs Up Button just to say that you like it your comments are also really wonderful that's kind of why we like to do this is to have a live audience um even though all we hear is your chatter um you can also go to ko-fi.com and donate there uh to the AV Geeks uh there's a link right there or patreon.com avgeeks also but uh thank you so much for watching and we'll be back again tomorrow because that's what we do on the weekdays during lunch we show you 16 millimeter films um thanks for tuning in and we will see you tomorrow bye thank you
