foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and then Shake our heads about the insensitivities uh of the people portrayed in them um yeah that last film of fish and totem was a visit to kind of uh the northern reaches of our continent and uh you know wine hunt white Hunters do what they do which is uh try to kill things uh or take things that they think look pretty or interesting um yeah that's kind of what this is so I apologize if that kind of soured the beginning of the show in some way um yeah so we watched like I said 16 millimeter films Let's uh watch uh educational film about Northwestern States enjoy [Music] life in the Northwestern States has been shaped by geography the Prairies plateaus and mountains in the Region's eastern half the rich prairies of Kansas and Nebraska and the high plains of The Dakotas further west and higher the Wide Open Spaces of Montana Wyoming and Colorado and through Idaho and Utah in the Region's Western half the great Rocky Mountain Range of the six regions into which we may divide the United States the Northwest is largest it covers one-third of the nation's total area the Missouri river is the largest of the seven drainage areas in this region rainfall has always been a major concern half the Northwest receives less than 16 inches of rain annually the plant and animal life is just as varied as the geography on the plains grama and buffalo grass cottonwood trees and prairie dogs then on the higher plateaus sagebrush and in the mountains black bears other large game animals and a seemingly endless expanse of pine forests most settlers came to the Northwest after 1850. they were homesteaders from the middle States some from the other regions and Canada and then came the greatest numbers immigrants from Germany Russia Norway and Sweden settlers hungry for free land willing to work hard to keep it today less than half the population lives by farming five cities Wichita Kansas City Omaha Denver Salt Lake City have populations over one hundred thousand each of these cities is an important jobbing and wholesale Center the people themselves take pride in their colorful past the Northwest gave America The frontiersmen with his sod home the Last Frontier and the home of the Indian the American Cowboy the sheep herders and Cattlemen and the distinctive Mormon culture early Prospectors found gold which is still mined in South Dakota Colorado and Utah silver three-fourths of the nation's Supply is mined in Idaho Utah Colorado and Montana lead one half of the nation's Supply is mined in the Northwest and Utah and Montana produce about a half of the nation's copper and there are uranium deposits in Colorado Butte Montana is built directly over one of the world's richest mineral deposits Buttes Mayans yield copper ore which is shipped to the smelter the refined copper is cast into ingots for shipment to manufacturing centers the world over oil production on the other hand is only a fraction of the nation's output yet its money returned to these states is important bituminous coal and lignite belts underlie much of the region adding to its reputation for Rich mineral resources virgin forests and other Regional resource cover large tracts of the mountain areas much of it is now conserved in national forests and lumbered under strict regulations the White Pine Forest in Idaho is the largest in the world here the lumbering industry provides work for Many Men [Music] but the soil is the northwest's most valuable resource the soil was first exploited by the range cattle industry even today the farms and ranches of this region supply nearly a third of our beef cattle [Music] some of the cattle are shipped to packing centers within the region but a great number go to cities of the middle States particularly Chicago St Paul and St Louis the dress beef is distributed throughout the United States and Europe the Northwest raises a third of the nation's sheep and Lambs high on the plateaus between mountain ranges sheep herders and their dogs stand guard over the flocks in the spring the heavy wool is sheared the region produces more than a third of the nation's wool [Music] and Lambs by the thousands are shipped from here to packing centers wheat is the most important cash crop a third of the nation's winter wheat is grown in the area around Kansas more than three-fourths of the spring wheat is supplied by the area centered in North Dakota today much of our wheat is raised on large Farms almost every stage of its production is done by power machines plowing seeding and harvesting the wheat is hauled by truck to grain elevators for storage from here much is shipped by rail to the flower mills sometimes within the region but the bulk goes by rail to Minneapolis or by boat to Buffalo to be processed and made into flour that will be distributed to all regions of the United States and Europe part of the nation's great Corn Belt extends over into the Northwestern states of Nebraska South Dakota and Kansas much of this corn is harvested green for cattle fodder some is cut and blown into silos as winter feed for cattle indeed the silos dotting the open Landscapes are among the most distinctive features of the Northwestern region the Northwest is also the source of other important grain crops Rye used for bread and animal fodder flax cultivated for the seeds that yield linseed oil Alfalfa part of the large hay Harvest that is bailed and shipped to other regions in the Northwest large areas of the cultivated land receive less than 16 inches of annual rainfall this means that much of the agriculture has to be done by dry farming which permits the soil to lie fallow at intervals at such times the soil is frequently cultivated to conserve moisture for the next crop in certain Plateau areas the federal government has developed a great many irrigation projects this irrigated land is used for Orchards although most of it helps support the extensive Alfalfa crops and sugar beet Farms probably the best solution to the Region's lack of enough rain is further development of similar irrigation projects here on the northwest Great Plains is America's legendary Main Street numberless small towns and Villages each a trading center for the rural area around it most of the towns have the same features the grain elevators livestock shipping pens the busy streets when farmers and their families crowd into town to do their shopping and the public school an important institution in any Plains town which leads the way for many to the State University and the state agricultural colleges the Northwest must import all kinds of manufactured goods from other regions farm machinery tools ready-made clothing together with nearly all fruits and vegetables the Northwest gives to the nation and the world a vast surplus of food products beef cattle sheep grains such as wheat rye and barley and to millions of tourists each year the Northwest is the land of fabulous attractions Glacier Park Yellowstone Park the Grand Teton Mountains snow-fed Mountain Streams and the dude ranches where people can escape from their cramped City Life and relive the Romance of the Old West thank you the Northwestern States the land of Our Last Frontier and the breadbasket of the nation foreign some confusion about the Northwestern States versus the Pacific Northwest and yeah I I don't know I I would say Northwest I'd say like wow Washington State Oregon um Idaho but yeah that's why we have these films um to kind of eke all that stuff out and you know those designations might be changing over a period of time um maybe they're just called flyover states now who knows uh so this next film is a NASA film and this came out when uh Skylab was orbiting around the world around the Earth uh it was our Laboratory where all these experiments would take place and so whenever there was a facility like this uh our mission NASA would do um they would film some stuff while they were up there and then put together these educational packages that were distributed so this is conservation laws in zero g uh and the astronaut who's talking is the father of uh this guy Richard Garriott who uh some of you who are old at like me would know as Lord British the guy who did Ultima which was a game that I played a lot of um on the Apple too I didn't have an apple too but my neighbor did and I would be there playing that game like all the time one summer I think I I spent so many hours over there um so anyways there's your your connection so this is conservation laws in zero g enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] Garriott the scientist pilot on the second manned Skylab flight during the three missions of Skylab in 1973 and 1974 fellow crewman and I were able to demonstrate several of the fundamental laws of nature in ways not possible here on Earth [Music] Skylab gave us the really rare opportunity to conduct these demonstrations in an environment which gravity was really not a factor foreign [Music] Gibson spins faster with arms in just as an ice skater does [Music] and also tumbles faster after he tucks his legs in [Music] these changes in angular velocity are illustrations of the law of conservation of angular momentum a rotating body's angular momentum is a product of its inertia and its angular velocity and that's what I've got shown for you on this particular line here L the angular momentum is equal to the product of inertia and its angular velocity the moment of inertia is a measure of a body's resistance to rotation just as mass is a measure of a body's resistance to linear acceleration the moment of inertia about an axis of rotation depends on the body's mass and on the distance of that Mass from the axis of rotation when the body's mass is located near the Hub of a wheel we can see that it is relatively easy to set the wheel in rotation therefore its moment of inertia or resistance to rotation is relatively small however when the mass is located further away from the Hub it is more difficult to rotate the wheel we may say that it's moment of inertia has been increased [Music] when we combine these two images we see that the wheel with the lower moment of inertia rotates more rapidly while the wheel with the larger moment of inertia is spins more slowly foreign [Music] simple cases conservation of angular momentum means that the product of moment of inertia and speed of rotation remains a constant when the skater pulls in her arms her moment of inertia decreases because some of her Mass gets closer to her rotation axis her angular velocity must then increase in order to keep her angular momentum the same now some other demonstrations of the same conservation law the same action in slow motion [Music] [Music] [Music] here Ed Gibson is twisting his upper body in the opposite direction from his legs since his initial angular momentum was Zero he cannot acquire any overall angular momentum here is Joe Kerwin demonstrating the same principle an interesting example of a body with zero angular momentum here on Earth can be provided by an ordinary house cat did you ever wonder why a cat dropped with zero angular momentum can always land on its feet even when it's dropped with its back facing toward the ground well that's what we're going to show you now this is our own cat Calico belongs to my daughter and what we're going to do is to drop her upside down to begin with allow her to land on her feet and then play it back for you in slow motion so that you can see exactly how Calico performs this thief in always landing on its feet a cat maintains zero angular momentum by twisting the front and rear parts of its body in opposite directions somewhat as Ed Gibson did actually the movements appear more complicated involving rotations about several axes a rotating body may be affected by a conservation of energy as well as angular momentum as you have probably already learned when energy is transformed from one form to another its total amount is conserved nothing is lost now energy exists in a variety of forms including potential kinetic and heat energy a potential energy is defined as a body's capacity to do work by by virtue of its position in space whereas kinetic energy is contained in a body's motion through space we learned an important lesson from this Explorer one satellite which launched our whole Space Program back in 1958 just a few months after the Russians put up Sputnik 1. Explorer one reminded us that when a rotating body is not completely rigid its kinetic energy can be easily transformed into heat energy this can have surprising consequences Explorer one and that's a model of it that I have here in my hand it had a long cylindrical shape and it was designed to spin about its longitudinal axis just as it's doing here on the launch pad it had four antennas at 90 degrees from each other and here you see them before Explorer one was mounted on top of its rocket once in orbit the antennas were designed to deploy like this now scientists were very surprised after the initial Elation over the successful launch of Explorer one to learn that the spinning satellite was beginning to Tumble end over in at first the scientists were a loss to explain this unexpected phenomenon but after a week or so they had solved the mystery now they found that the reason that this had happened was that energy was being transformed into heat energy by the flexing of these antennas that were located around the midsection of the satellite the heat energy that had been generated gradually lessen the angular velocity although still we must remember the total angular momentum had to be conserved now this required that the satellite change its spin Direction so that instead of spinning about this longitudinal axis it had to be spinning or rotating about an axis which had a larger moment of inertia and that in effect was what explorer one had begun to do now let's look at another demonstration of that same phenomenon using this time a drink dispenser from Skylab now for this demonstration I partially filled a dispenser with an orange drink so as to allow for a little turbulence to occur when it was rotated then after I spun it along its long axis the turbulence caused the kinetic energy energy to be transformed into heat energy just as in the case of the antennas for Explorer one now then let's observe the videotaped results of the Skylab demonstration now we know that the minimum inertia axis of a long cylinder like this is along the axis of the cylinder and the maximum inertia axes are either of the orthogonal axes and it was found that if a body is spun about its minimum inertia axis it'll not stay spinning in that direction if there's any any energy loss mechanism available at all it'll gradually lose a little bit of its energy and not only flow down its spin rate but also begin to Tumble until it finally stabilizes spinning or tumbling about one of its maximum inertia axes and that's the first thing that I'd like to demonstrate here and this is much like our Explorer satellite looked some 15 years ago now it may take me a couple of times to get it spinning just right they don't want to get it spinning there's a pretty good one now blow on it just to keep it in the field of view here very gently and now it's just about stopped and you can now begin to see this as it loses a little bit of energy because I've got some water bubbles inside here that's flashing around of the water inside will gradually absorb just a little bit of energy and you can see now how this drinking device is beginning to Tumble just a little bit it's beginning to process and spin and not about its longitudinal axis where we started but instead about an axis just slightly off to one side and blowing just very gently right about the center of mass so as to not disturb it if I can and now I'm just about to do that we'll get a few more minutes here I've done such a good job of spinning it precisely but it's going to take quite a while for the energy to be absorbed just a very gentle breath as all that's required to keep it floating and stable but now you see it's almost converted to a tumble very little spinning almost none of it about its longitudinal axis so the minimum inertia axis that I was describing a minute ago to blow it back down into the middle of our picture here okay perhaps that's enough now you can see that all of the energy that it added excess available has been lost Hunter rushing around on the inside and it has floated stumble down so that the momentum has remained the same now if you'd calculate the amount of momentum it is to begin with and the amount that it has now the angular momentum should be the same but the energy has been reduced until it is just sufficient to give it this angular momentum now that we've seen both the Explorer and Skylab demonstrations let's analyze for just a moment the equations that explain precisely what it was that's happened now this is of course the equation we've been working with total energy equal a sum of kinetic potential and heat energies the kinetic energy can be expressed if we like is one half moment of inertia times its angular velocity squared potential energy and then Q is just the symbol I've used for the heat energy involved now we also know that the angular momentum L can be expressed as a moment of inertia times the angular velocity and then this inserted back up into the equation for kinetic energy if we should wish to giving us with this final equation which I want to talk about for a moment the total energy equal the sum of these three terms now we know from the laws that we've just been looking at that the total energy in the system must have been conserved and therefore held a constant also the total potential energy did not change because the bodies that we were looking at both our drinking dispenser and the explore satellite in orbit maintained their same relative position above the surface of the Earth so that the potential energy was not changing and then finally our other law told us that the angular momentum did not change during this time so the only thing that has been left to vary during the course of this changing in rotation is the amount of heat and the angular velocity well now we know that as long as there is any turbulence as there was for example in the drink dispenser and with the flopping antennas the heat energy is going to increase during the time it was rotating so that term had to increase and the only way that this equation can be maintained in Balance then is for the angular velocity Omega to have decreased and of course that's exactly what we saw happen the high spin rates of the drink bottle and the Explorer one did begin begin to slow down and the rotation rate diminish now the one other thing to keep in mind as Omega decreased is that the angular momentum L must still have been kept a constant so that when this went down in order to hold the momentum constant the moment of inertia I had to increase which meant that the drink bottle and the satellite did not spin any longer about their minimum inertia axis but instead began to Tumble and spin about its maximum inertia axis in fact its final stable condition was a spin about its maximum inertia axis at the minimum velocity which was consistent with providing the required amount of angular momentum and one in which there was no longer any turbulence generated so the Q could no longer increase returning to the story of the early Explorer satellites I should tell you that the flexible antennas on Explorer 1 were replaced with nearly rigid ones on Explorer 2. something like the antennas you see here on a small lunar satellite released by Apollo 15. so while Explorer 1 started tumbling in the first 90 minute orbit it was many days before Explorer 2 did likewise I hope you have gotten a little better feeling for the laws of motion governing spinning and tumbling bodies in space and that you will be stimulated to try and understand some of our final examples foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] could watch uh Skylab footage all day um it's just amazing uh and I have a film called spaceborn which is basically just Skylab footage uh set to music um but in case you didn't know Skylab fell to the Earth and I remember when it was going to happen I think it was in the it was late seventies I don't think I was in high school yet but it was in the summer and I was like half hoping that it would land near my house it was we had this giant kind of dirt field area that there was nothing there I was like man it'd be so great if it fell there but I think it fell in Australia um but yeah it basically the the orbit degraded and then it eventually got sucked in by the gravity and got all burnt up and some debris ended up uh nobody was hurt no animals were hurt I don't think but uh okay so um behind me I have a uh film scanner and I gotta say I'm surprised I'm excited because I found I was looking for something else over the weekend and I found more films from the Unicorn tale series of which magnificent major is part of that series and so these are these kind of interesting musical films made in the late 70s in the New York area uh by one of the guys who helped create Chippendales and who was murdered uh there's a I think it's on uh Hulu there's a mini series about it I watched only one episode which talks about his educational film stuff for like a second but uh I could not finish it because it was so horrible like I watch a lot of documentaries because I have a lot of stock footage in it and I was like I can't watch the rest of this because it is like the worst um because it kept recapping and then kept using the same footage they were very lazy in how they used their footage all that stuff so anyways uh this is uh the Maltese unicorn uh and I'm hoping there's going to be some music in it and I'm hoping that we're gonna find something that because we've watched two other ones I think uh happy birth happy like birthday Big Apple was one and uh Alex in the doo-wop lamp so I'm hoping that this is going to escalate and be as good as magnificent Majors music because I think magnificent major has two like kick butt songs all right so here anyways here's uh the Maltese unicorn enjoy foreign [Music] [Music] laughs catch up and Beggars get crowned and sometimes when you tumble [Music] meet again [Music] what's so special about being homes and Watson Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson they're only two of the greatest detectives ever they were what channel were they on what channel the English Channel oh [Music] the preclusion suspect oh no first we should go right to the scene of the crime well my house we'll go there too but don't worry we can miss we're homes in Watson [Music] when it came to sewing up a mystery homes and Watson let the big parade where were you when I needed you when I had a chance to crack take my hand in this way Watson glance I have you back we'll peruse the clues the best to use and have this paper tied up with a wink and a blink we'll find the link and both lands Sunny Side Up Make A Wish Come What May there'll be history [Music] [Applause] oh boy unlucky Mr Holmes says not to worry and he seems to direct me must see someone in the Avenue inside of me we'll regret haven't you ever heard of Holmes McGuffin homes McGovern wasn't that a luxury car in the 30s no he's a famous private detective but why didn't you just tell us you were a private detective then it wouldn't be private well I suppose you're all wondering why I called you here tonight what are we talking about we live here of course and that's what makes you all the perfect suspect odd the only thing that makes me sneeze is cat fur that's not a toupee is it you mean sucks The Maltese unicorn everyone can do that aren't you in enough trouble already Brian if you are innocence you have nothing to fear Mrs Watson you never liked that unicorn did you Mrs Watson of course I liked it I loved it no you didn't dear you hated it I hated it but I loved it but the same thing happened to Dick Tracy once in a submarine I know what must have happened I see it all now it's two o'clock in the morning everybody's asleep but you Mrs Watson you weren't asleep you hope if you smash the Unicorn you'll be able to get the Falcon you see it you sneak up behind it [Music] and unless I miss my guess no that's not true I didn't do it I must have missed my guess Brian I think we've had enough of this of course but tell me first Dr Watson what are these doing in the living room my bedroom slippers how Sleepwalker well yes sometimes uh I know what must have happened on the night in question you were walking in your sleep Outdoors [Music] tell me Dr Watson is this golf ball yours or no at least I don't think it is are those teeth marks obviously a very poor loser no Dr Watson you weren't walking in your sleep on the lawn you were playing golf in my sleep foreign but I don't play golf if you were sleeping you wouldn't know that it was you if I'm not mistaken no it wasn't I must be mistaken oh I noticed that you knit Grandma yes but I know what must have happened late for a birthday scar for some Christmas socks you were working all through the night [Music] no it's not true too bad it sounded so good too my this be yours yes but I'm starting to be a drama when I grow up I think I know what happened [Music] thank you no it couldn't have been me ask Mom and Dad I never do anything wrong of course the canary is always the last one you suspect he's acting strangely haven't you noticed looks like a guilty conscience to me don't worry I'll make this bird's thing oh good Heavens it's the Hound of the Baskervilles no it's it's Butler Butler oh my cat Butler he ran away in 1947 I thought he'd never come back over that he must have the other night I should have known the butler did it we really misjudged you I don't believe it there must be something you can yell at him for can you forgive us it's my fault that if I hadn't lied all the time you would have believed me you two more that I discovered that I didn't know existed that uh in my database they were not listed as um unicorn Tales things so maybe we'll spread them out a little bit but uh so some of you think the last song maybe it was a toe Tapper because he literally talks about tapping his toes um some people say that the there was a second song the song of denial was a good one um these would be candidates
