so so so so so so hello sorry about that i realized i had a speaker on on another computer and then we would have gotten this miserable feedback uh anyways that was uh some home movies the evelyn mcgovern collection um which were uh part of the oregon archive collection i think those were either donated to oregon or they were bought at a yard sale or whatever but the mcgoverns were in the tombstone business and they went to italy and they so there's a lot of footage of the italian tombstones and cemetery uh stonework uh i'm not sure of the time on this uh one way to tell which i don't have handy would be to do look at the edge code if this was shot on a kodak stock and then we could try to figure that out but um 20s 30s maybe i really not sure what makes it hard is i don't know fashion if there were there were a couple of cars in there but i can't really id and then once you go to europe man forget it it's all bets are off because europe you know depending on where you are in europe it could be the 1800s looking um because you know people are horse-drawn carts and the buildings were built in the late 1800s or earlier so it's hard to kind of date stuff like that um but uh it's interesting nonetheless i really enjoy looking at this and some people were talking about uh in some of the comments the still you know a still image and of people standing still uh and part of that is because um a lot of people that were shooting home movies and a lot of people that were being shot in home movies were used to photography like still photography where you had to stand still and they weren't used to the idea that they could move and the camera would capture them and not go out of focus so uh it's funny to see occasionally you'll see um with home movies somebody standing still and then you can tell the cameraman's like move there was this one a series of home movies i transferred where it was this old woman and she was just kind of standing there and you know she was really old back in the 40s like so she was probably in her 80s or 90s i mean you can't again you can't really tell with age um but she would just stand there and then at some point she would like you could tell that she was listening to the camera person who was saying like move and then so she would just kind of walk towards the camera and normally i don't notice that but it was lots of shot to that of like you know old relatives standing still next to a car and then they would just start moving forward and move towards the camera so it was really kind of funny uh wow lots of stuff to see today uh this one is awesome but it has some regrettable uh world war ii racist stereotypes in it um the asian the japanese um portrayal of course is very regrettable uh we know better now i would like to think so here's six lighted legged saboteurs [Music] [Music] well adobe [Applause] fellow actress members this is the opportunity famous right now [Music] men or insects be mosquitos us for super insects this is our pledge hey mosquitoes will do at least 100 million dollars damage to america this year humans mine where have you been but mission i have been out in sea cow country voila secret damage 50 billion frogs how much he's got in frank's marks well enough please hello this is a louse reporting from the front we're spreading tightness joints everywhere the place is lousy with us that's group sabotage reverse those charges lightness germs good will report people will do at least 125 million damage to their cotton crop in america this year signed thank you please psycho priests who are of fries will spread pollution and disease that will cost america 70 million dollars this year who are a human beings think their lives are priceless excuse please bottles they tie for the fry they are too cheap don't cheat of course all that was just a lot of tomfoolery maybe you think it's funny but don't get the idea that this insect access business is a joke something we can laugh off listen to what one of the world's most venerable scientists has to say about this of all the living creatures on this earth the insects are the worst enemies of mankind they destroy incalculable amounts of property in this country alone we lose over 2 500 millions each year and you realize that that means that the labor of one million men annually it really in the ultimate analysis goes to feed the insects next to the insects become the germs of disease and the germs of disease are carried by insects many of our most was dr l o howard world famous entomologist for 37 years chief of our bureau of entomology you see this is no laughing matter one million men working to feed insects and that's no joke look at this cotton field bull evil damage more than a hundred million dollars worth each year enough to buy us a battleship or 400 flying fortresses every cotton farmer knows what to do about that grasshoppers in an average year destroy enough crops in these united states to pay for 1450 millimeter anti-aircraft [Music] guns each year screw worms do damage to livestock in the south and southwest equal to the cost of five modern destroyers or 500 fighting planes smear 62 is the remedy [Music] the colorado potato beetle robs us of enough each year to pay for 75 four motored bombers or over 300 fighters [Music] the housefly carrier of typhoid and other filth-borne diseases costs us annually enough to pay for an airplane carrier or a thousand light tanks to destroy flies keep stables clean spread stable manure at least every third day or use a fly trap fit champion of all insects in damage done to the human race is the mosquito this is the anopheles or malaria mosquito the most dangerous animal in the world cause of more deaths than any other carrier of disease the deadly yellow fever mosquito is another constant menace to mankind mosquitoes all kinds cost us nearly 150 million dollars each year paris green kills malaria mosquitoes for yellow fever mosquitoes change water daily in bases and don't let water stand in tin cans or other receptacles in or about the house oil for the rest and of course for mosquitoes in general drainage of pools and swamps wherever possible make no mistake this is war your war everybody's war don't think that it's not important remember insects robbers of two billion five hundred million dollars a year to say nothing of countless human lives if all that could be saved it would buy 30 battleships or 10 000 flying fortresses a year it would buy 15 thousand billy mitchell bombers it would buy fifty thousand pursuit flames it would buy more than one hundred thousand forty millimeter guns it would buy one million five hundred thousand jeeps so don't think that it's not important and don't forget this insect pests are the most dangerous enemies of mankind and now they're all working for the other axis and in glove the mosquito and adolf the typhoid fly and tojo the bowl weaver and benito with apologies to the weevil [Music] it's your business to see that these six-legged saboteurs don't rob us of the food and manpower so urgently needed to win the war a little work a little oil a little of this poison or that you can all fight on this front smash the insect axis do it and do it now [Music] uh just like a lot of the cartoons from the uh late 30s 40s the it always ends up with a war [Music] and the image of all those are kind of like they look like vacuum cleaners but it looks like they're dispensing um ddt or paris green or something like that um yeah i mean but boy yeah the stereotypes they're horribly racist um but that's of that time and we know better or we are striving to know better aren't we uh speaking of usda uh this next film um is uh kind of so next week um we are doing the tournament um where we are going through our jingles and songs of some of our beloved films and we are going to have them compete with each other and you will be the judge um this is so that we can challenge the found footage festival guys who do did this with videotape and um they kind of in one of their shows said hey maybe we should take on av geeks and i was like yes because we will we will romp you uh because we have some real good real good uh jingles now uh we got a lot we got more than 30 that my wife and i have to kind of cull down this uh weekend down to the a sweet 16 a sweet 16 millimeter um and then we'll have these competitions and we'll do it monday wednesday and friday next week and then that following week i think we'll try to take on town footage festival but uh somebody i have been asking you guys to submit what your favorite songs were and somebody uh mentioned this and i have not included this in the list um but it's a big part of what we've been showing and has a major impact on people it is the mulligan stew um series and this is one of the films that i have not shown yet it's countdown four four three two and um so here it is rock out [Music] tomorrow [Music] tomorrow [Music] where do you think food will be going tomorrow to help feed the world population well this is a very serious problem because you know we have 3 billion people in the world today and by the year 2000 we're going to have 6 billion and that means that we've got 30 years to duplicate our food production that's taken us centuries to develop and so this is where space is going to come in handy so there's really kinds of food and all kinds of places in in the country in the oceans and uh on the deserts provided you that you irrigate them and in in land that's that's not being farmed now because we don't know about it but the space program is going to help us find out hey there's some land down there we've taken pictures of it it's got the water it's got the climate go grow things on it we can put sensitive sensors on board a spacecraft that can look down at the land and can not only tell you whether the land is tillable but actually what kind of crops will grow there we can search for water and for minerals and for oil from space we can do a lot of things from space that will help us grow food [Music] so [Music] a man [Music] every day our country and our world are growing here's the world population class we can see that our country is increasing at the rate of one new person every eight and a half seconds this means that every day there are ten thousand one hundred and sixty-five additional mouths to feed ten thousand one hundred and sixty-five new people needing balanced diets to live and grow four into three sixty-five carry the eight 6598 minutes plus uh 7.06 extra babies every minute more and more balanced diets means there has to be more and better sources of foods from all the four foods more sources of food from the fruits and vegetable groups more sources from the bread and cereal group more sources from the milk group and more sources from the meat group then times 365 days per year that's 1 460 servings from the fruits and vegetables group every year that's 1460 series from the bread and cereal group every year that's 1095 servings from the nuts group every year and 730 servings on a meat group every year how did you know that that's 4.32 every day just a great day little batting practice maybe i woke up my fastball and then you had a can of tomatoes two weeks vacation right at the best time of the year we could down to the lake and do some ambition that is of old mr arnold will let us use a lake again like last year also either i'm seeing things because that's the funniest sight i've ever seen in a long time is that what isn't that wait man i don't believe it yep here he is oh okay did someone call my name wilbur zoo right just what are you doing anyhow you look like you can barely stand up oh no i'm fine huh this is the way you're supposed to look when you go camping carrying you of course you know kids being in the great outdoors communicating with mother nature roughing it like our forefathers you know kids it's where it's at whoopee you can't be serious of course i am i am going to cam kickapoo before i came by here to ask if you would like to come along it'll be great fun setting up a tent i've got the latest camping equipment available with the way you load it up wilbur i don't doubt it and we we can gather natural specimens and go and go bird watching it'll be great fun two whole days me and nature wilbur can't be a short lot of fun but you have to do it right and carefully or you'll end up in a lot of trouble trouble me wilbur do right what trouble could i get into i'm completely equipped for two whole days well it feels like a year to my back wilbur ricky's right just be careful okay besides we couldn't come with you anyhow we planning to rehearse a couple of new songs for our next show sorry wilbur okay well then i'll see you in a few days when i return fully restored by the succulent bomb of nature's soothing peace and quiet a new man refreshed by the confrontation with the basic natural elements sorely lacking in our congested tense urban lives to again be one with nature camping beneath the arms of a tree sleeping on the mattress of our saying to the stars here i am here is mankind sometimes i think wilbur is losing his marvel me too let's just hope wilbur brings enough food and the kind that once spoil on him well he says only gonna be gone for two days what could possibly happen in just two days i don't know but let's just hope nothing happens for welbeck the time to produce fresher tasting longer lasting more nutritious food for tomorrow is today scientists and farmers are working to improve and develop new varieties of fruits and vegetables through the use of improved farming equipment and techniques larger tastier and more nutritious fruits and vegetables are already available for the consumer with many more coming in the future like a nectarine a delicious fruit that farmers and scientists have developed by combining a peach and a plum it's got lots of vitamin a too cereal grains are being improved too and cereals themselves are being packed and fortified with vitamins minerals and lots of other nutrients too all you add is fruit and milk and you'll have a nutritious meal any time of the day very interesting but what have you got to drink there are substitutes for fruit drinks such as grapefruit and orange which are available today these artificial drinks contain no real fruit juices and come in powdered and frozen form they're fortified with vitamins a and c and you just add water delicious and nutritious too in the important milk group there have been a lot of substitutions they may last longer and may be less expensive and more convenient take for example the widespread use of margarine for butter how about whipped cream for my dessert here try some of this oh thank you very interesting indeed there are also simulated substitutes in the meat group some are made from vegetable protein food products like simulated bacon made from soybeans in some parts of the country vegetable protein products are used in some processed meats such as beef patties sausages and meatless ham geez listen to that thunder the storm isn't very far away well that's why it's extra great that we decided to cook up our positively super favorite special dish the mulligan stew boy it sure looks good smells good too it's a combination of good nutritious ingredients which we print our mug and soup right on mickey right on manny flash game let's go the radio said it was over the natural forest natural floor they also natural force are you thinking what i'm thinking i sure am wilbur [Music] all by himself alone let's turn on the radio maybe there's a late weather forecast and bobby rogers was trained at cleveland along with our builder shoney isaacs and now the weather let's listen to the weather the storm that hit the natural forest today still is raging on with rain rain and more rain expected many areas will be sealed off from relief and supplies because of flash flooding fresh flooding [Music] oh no oh no and now back to the local scene the locals we gotta do something about wilbur but what they said that no one can get in or out of there that's right and rubber doesn't have enough food to last from the whole week he may have to stay there no food wow what do we do well first of all we've got to find a way to get food into wilbur hey i can go to the airport and check with the helicopter power's there he can help us great manny good thinking then we gotta find out what foods to send him foods that last and will be easy to pack together foods to last over two weeks if necessary and be easy to fix even for wilbur you'll need foods from all the four food groups to give his body the necessary nutrition he needs and that's exactly our problem food that won't spoil that'll be nutritious and that'll take up a small amount of room so that we can send wilbur lots of it i'll get the helicopter what are we waiting for gang let's go hey but what about the dessert did someone take dessert oh i'm so hungry [Music] [Music] everybody's body [Music] everybody's [Music] from your head down to your feet has to go back [Music] is [Music] is [Music] everybody [Music] today we are developing new methods of getting food from the sea scientists using new underwater equipment for harvesting foods and fish from the sea just as the farmers raise and harvest their crops and livestock here on dry land so just as farmers engage in agriculture sea farmers engage in aquaculture simple seaweeds will be an important food source of the future seaweed is surprisingly high in nutritional value it has all the essential vitamins except vitamin c and is high in potassium and iodine fish has just as much protein as meat baby and protein makes you look and feel strong and cool fish has become increasingly important as a present and future nutritious food source and with modern fishing boats sea farmers will be able to harvest vast branches of fish beneath the sea ranches you meet with cowboys and horses not whites with horses but there will be giant fish farms with fast herds of fish the sea ranchers may use trained porpoises and dolphins to lead the herds of fish just as sheep farmers use big furry sheepdogs right on salt is taken from the sea water and huge water processing plants and then pumps and deserts and dry plains producing fruits grains and vegetables where nothing has ever grown before more land means more and better crops providing us with fruit and vegetables grains and protein sources meat animals are being bred to produce more lean meat and more lean meat means cost savings for better food cross breeding and other techniques will produce more and better tasting meat meat gives us protein to make our body strong and healthy they'll be able to tell us about the kind of diet they feed to the astronauts right and we'll be able to find out how they manage to pack so much food the long space flights you know such a small capsule right and at the same time they get good tasting and nutrition too that's exactly what we're going to need to help wilbur well you've been cleared to see the space flight food experts dislocated and feeling the app thank thank you so you see dr smith we thought that some of the problems that you have to solve in planning the menu for the astronauts might help us well actually i guess our problems are quite similar in that uh our food has to be extremely lightweight and has to be stowed in a very small volume and highly nutritious and easy to consume without a lot of preparation a lot of time involved so i think i guess some of our problems are similar we have one problem that you wouldn't have and that's weightlessness because we have to everything we design must uh go into a it's going to be flown in orbital flight and there there's no gravity to hold the food to the plate or to the spoon or so we have to design special packages to ensure that the food can be consumed without the floating around and getting into the equipment does the astronauts get to choose from a large variety of food well yes actually we have about 120 foods that they choose from we'll show you how how we go about this and how they select their foods here primarily we try to determine what the astronauts basic food habits are we talk to their wives we uh much in the manner that we'll go through here today we go through a uh and let them eat the food and find out what they like and dislike and then uh develop a menu that is nutritionally balanced and will provide them with the necessary nutrients for a specific mission how are the astronauts food prepared and packaged which varies with the mission of course in apollo we dehydrate almost all of the foods to reduce the weight and make them shelf stable without refrigeration we use a flexible package so they can stow food items in small crevices and very small limited volumes where can we find food um similar to those found at nasa on the space station course we try to use foods that are very much like what the astronauts are used to so many of our items are right on the grocery shelves of freeze-dried soups dried beef fruit juices and beverage powders that are available in the grocery store and we adapt to a lot of them some of them we do not adapt it's only with a special type of packaging that we might put on it's quite a large number of the items that we use that are in everybody's grocery store thanks a whole lot really enjoying it [Music] so that's our problem whoever's in the forest somewhere we've got to get food to them food that'll have to last for two weeks but my copter can't carry that much food don't worry about that we're already finding food that take up a small amount of space and still be nutritious okay i'll be ready to go as soon as you give me the word roger i'm sure glad we met those food experts what they told us helped us buy food for wilbur that are small and compactly packaged we've got food from each of the four food groups like dry milk and pudding from the milk group and dry apricots and peaches from the fruit and vegetable group we've got processed meats made with vegetable proteins added like hot dogs sausages and others right on how about the bread and cereal group we've got that covered too with enriched cereals and breads straight from the supermarket we even have some peanut butter for wilbur let's get back to the clubhouse and help the boys pack the foods all together so that they can get it to the helicopter pilot over here mulligan straighten that out of this i gotta first let me untangle this road [Applause] here come the girls with some more food [Applause] wow it sure looks great boy is going to be happy please hurry someone cuz i'm so hungry i can eat the sandwich island okay let's get it all together ready well gang we did it let's take it down to the helicopter there's enough food in there to last over two weeks if necessary it represents a balanced diet and it's so simple to prepare even wilbur won't have any trouble well guys what are we waiting for hey where's maggie [Applause] i made a couple of passes over the area and i think i spotted him you sure yeah he was walking around in a circle holding his stomach like it was real hungry that's river all right okay i'll let you know how i make out i could eat a tree by sandwich stuffed with oatmeal with a side of standalone [Music] my a mango a helicopter come to save me throw me some food anything a bagel anything nutritious [Music] the helicopter is dropping me ah my package [Music] now let's see that's four servings from the bread and cereal group and that's four servings a day from the fruit four servings every day from the breads and cereals group if four servings from the fruits and vegetables group three servings from the milk group and two servings from the meat group that's four four three two meat group fruit vegetables group bread and cereals group that's a balanced diet [Applause] a good planner and a good camper a second time stage nine early to bed and early to rise to look to the future for nutritious good food i'll make sure i always have food from the four full groups so that even if i'm stranded i'll have a balanced diet and make sure you take enough foods just in case there's no problem after all now they have dehydrated fruits and freeze-dried foods oh heck i know all that stuff after all i'm an advanced camper well not exactly in a sense [Music] show you how
