so so so so so so so hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show um i was actually on a conference call with some swedes and some brits about some film restoration software and so um things got off to a little rocky start um i hope that's okay uh yeah so that film untitled scientist footage uh i don't i can't remember where i got that from that could have been from a renzo leader polytechnic institute in troy new york where they gave me a bunch of film they were like we we got all the film digitized that we want do you want this and i was like yeah and so i rented a van and drove up to troy and i think i did a show with um one of the yes men up there um who teaches up there and uh then hung out with some people there's this band called the books which are were based in uh massachusetts on the other side of these mountains um so anyways it's a good time but uh yeah i drove a bunch of films down uh and i'm still going through them and a lot of them don't have notes so it's like what is this i don't know if we watch it and it's like oh well that's underwat untitled scientist film footage um i think an intern actually named that so um i hope everybody survived 420 it was uh uh a good day mostly so um i guess i don't really smoke pot or ingest pot you know caffeine is my drug of choice as i've mentioned many many times every day that you see me um it's like give it up already skip we know you like coffee um anyways this next film is uh in my notes says it has a really great song and so we're still getting candidates for our uh competition against the found footage festival i did not see which film or which song they picked last night i'm hoping it's bank of ireland because i love that song very much um don't tell me in the comments uh but uh i'm so i'm trying to get candidates and i'm so i'm going through my database to see like which ones had potentially good songs and this one i thought i was showing the day before but i messed up this is for is food one two three four i think yesterday or day before i showed uh soap scents and i thought it was the food one so here it is this is definitely food one two three four and you guys let me know if you think is a good enough song to add to our list of 16 candidates that we are going to compete with uh next week [Music] two three four one two three four two three four one two three four what do you have to do to make you feel good to be healthy get lots of exercise have plenty of rest and sleep keep clean most important get the right things to eat we are very careful how we feed our pets we need to be just as careful to get the proper food for ourselves to feel good so that we will want to do many things our bodies are made up by the food we eat so by eating the right kinds of food we develop a good healthy body many foods are good for you as long as you don't get too much of one group [Music] eating the right things is a habit that starts when you are very young you probably like the food your parents like people whose families came from all over the world live in this country many of us eat the same food but it looks different because it is prepared in a different way it can be fun to eat food that's new for [Music] you [Music] all the foods we eat can be put into four groups one the bread and cereal group two the meat group three the milk group four the fruit and vegetable group all these foods are good for you but the secret of eating well is to eat some of each group every day it's as simple as one two three four one the bread and cereal group bread and cereals come from grain they can look very different [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] all these contain a large amount of carbohydrates [Music] they give you energy they help you to run fast and to be good in all kinds of sports also this food group helps you become taller and stronger [Music] rice is a cereal an important food to people in some parts of the world two the meat group [Music] food in this group comes in many different forms [Music] [Music] so [Music] why is meat so important it gives you protein protein builds your muscles and makes your body grow protein is a good repairman it helps a wound heal [Music] beams are high protein they help your body in the same way as meat so much so that scientists now make them a part of the meat group [Applause] nuts are a similar source of protein [Music] three the milk group milk is an excellent food there are many different dairy foods made from milk [Music] milk gives you good teeth it also helps you to grow strong bones the substance which does that is called calcium milk is especially good for you while you are very young it contains substances which help you to grow up newborn babies live entirely on milk now for the fruit and vegetable group there are so many of them you have a great choice and there must be some you really like [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] fruits and vegetables help you to stay well and if you are sick they will make you get well faster to feel good and to grow up you need vitamins you need them all through your life foods one two three four contain these important vitamins so by eating foods from the four groups you will get all the vitamins you need you need tiny amounts of minerals foods contain different minerals we already mentioned one calcium it is present in milk and needed especially for your teeth and bones another mineral is salt you need a little salt for your blood salt comes naturally in many foods for example celery [Music] spinach asparagus since salt is in so many foods we really don't need to add extra salt to some of our meals again all the minerals you need there are very many are all found in your four basic food groups see why they are so important most of the time you eat what is given to you but sometimes you can make your own choice duke is very thirsty he will have to make a choice between cola and milk [Music] [Music] did the dog select the drink that's better for him here are some snacks which one is a little better for you [Music] [Applause] your body is a fantastic wonderful gift take care of it all the time one way to do this is to eat the right food it will make you feel good and strong and look well [Music] we learned that you need cereals for energy [Music] meats for your muscles milk for your teeth and bones fruits and vegetables to make your body function your body receives all this nourishment through the four basic food groups what are they tell me one [Music] two [Music] three [Music] four two three four one two three four one two three four one two three go four two three four one two three four one two three four one two three [Music] one two three so nice little electronic jingles but i don't know why i made a note saying that the dairy one was good i really that that was no good um yeah all right well we watched it so there you go handle films um as an educational film company they a lot of the films they did in the 70s they they're just not they just don't have it they're just not interesting to me i have yet to find a handle film that i'm just like whoa that's awesome except that i've been doing some work with some films from the national archives and there's a handles film called atomic cities that is awesome it's so good but obviously that was made like in the late 40s so you know something obviously there was a change in whatever they were doing all right this next film is uh part of the your chance to live um features our friend america's uh talking sleep machine peter thomas and this is your chance to live heatwave [Music] enter the sun whose warmth reaches out across space providing the delicate balance which makes life possible [Music] enter man whose frailty as a creature of temperature is too often overlooked [Music] and here comes the weather report but believe me it won't be news it's just like the one for yesterday the day before that temperatures in excess of 100 degrees are expected to continue for at least the neck hey i got me some great idea why don't we go down to school and play some basketball can't you just sit still didn't you hear the man just say it was over a hundred nothing's moving maybe a hundred just maybe but let's go you gotta work on your left anyway okay let me fill the thermos with some water water you need water for you're young come on you're gonna have to learn to discipline yourself you want to be a ball player besides you can do without it if i can maybe you can do without it but my body says drink i want a drink you think taking a drink is copping out yeah you're nuts i know but it's too hot out here and you know what this heat can do to you i never felt better in my life that's what you're going to say the day you die is that you've never felt better in your life well i never have felt better in my life i won't work too hard i'll just put it around a little bit the thing is you shouldn't be out here at all in this heat you know what the doctor said why don't you come in and sit down and relax because i don't want to eat is just a state of the mind i won't be out here too long anyway okay you'll be sorry you know how sick you get in this heat so please just take it easy oh you sound like my mother [Music] so [Music] has trapped some pretty stagnant air here and it's not likely to move on for a while if you've got a respiratory or heart condition get some place cool and stay there even if you think you're too young and strong to be affected by extreme weather youth does not have a corner on doing the wrong thing when it comes to reacting to temperatures and humidity that are very high for a long time the old the young and the middle aged can all understand the danger they can see or feel a tornado or an earthquake for instance but when it comes to something like heat they sometimes don't take it seriously they should for man can live comfortably naturally only within very limited parameters of temperature anything beyond those parameters if not compensated for can cause illness or death what is so tragic about most people who get sick or die from strenuous activity in great heat or humidity or just long exposure to it is that it can be so easily avoided some people of course have to work out of doors when it's hot but these people usually know how to prevent loss of strength cramps exhaustion or stroke that heat can bring on they know enough to wear light clothes to drink water to take salt tablets to stay away from heavy foods it's those people who don't have to be out in the heat those people who insist on testing themselves against the heat who generally wind up in trouble [Music] temperature is 98 degrees it is expected to go over 100 degrees later in the day the record high for the state recorded in 1935 has already been topped reports reaching our newsroom indicate an increasing number of people who suffer from respiratory or heart conditions are being severely and adversely affected by the continuing heat humidity and bad air the national weather service does not expect a break in the heat for at least three days [Music] [Applause] man i'm just tired i'm going to sit down take a rest the point is that very few people have to be trapped by the heat they have alternatives the trouble is that they don't use them they can get where it's cool out of the sun indoors they can relax take it easy but all too often they don't and if they must go out they can be careful to replace their bodies depleted liquids by drinking water but too often they don't [Music] you [Music] [Music] so [Music] its effects build up over hours and days strenuous activity and high temperatures cause sweating and sweating dries out your body and drains it of the salt it needs this kind of activity regardless of the physical condition of the person involved can lead to painful muscle spasms you all right it still hurts a little bit come on man for most people listening to the warning signs sent out by their own body will stand them in good stead during times of extreme heat sapped energy means slow down relax being thirsty means drink being very hot means get where it's cool oh oh my god what happened to you oh honey i told you not to go outside it was too [Music] charlie you may not be able to do anything about the heat except try to avoid it and in the long run that's the very best thing you can do [Music] folks we just got this latest weather report in from the national weather service forget all early reports it's a new record for this day new high it's 105 degrees still climbing [Music] oops they made a mistake i have a film about it and maybe a catchy song let's person in the see wide world is you and you hardly even know you the most important person in the whole wide world is you come on we'll show you let's find out more about the things you feel and do you're the most important person in the world to you i was cutting with my scissors cutting out a picture of a painting i had painted a person's face i really liked it and i tried to be real careful the chorus in it out of every place and then it happened something happened and i felt so bad that i cried and cried yes i felt so bad cause i really tried oops you made a mistake that's all and making mistakes i made a mistake that's all and mistakes can happen to anyone i was helping set the table putting down the silverware and folding every napkin neatly by each place i got the glasses and i tried to be real careful as i poured the milk but i was just too late for it had happened something happened and i felt so bad that i cried and cried yes i felt so bad cause i really try you made a mistake that's awesome and making mistakes is never fun to say oops i made a mistake that's all and the sex can happen to anyone if anyone can make a mistake anyone can make a mistake every day and you never know when the thing to do when it happens to you is try to figure out what went wrong and try a little harder to make you go right when you start all over again i was building up a building taller than the tallest building i had tried before it grew and grew so hard i felt terrific and i placed my blocks real carefully one at a time then right before my eyes i saw it happen yes it happened and i felt so bad that i cried and cried yes i felt so bad cause i really tried [Music] anyone the most important person oops i made a mistake that's all i almost knocked over a monitor running over here for some reason i thought that that song had at least one more stanza to it but the scene of the kid drinking from the water fountain and the water just sprays him in the face is ah that just reminds me so much of all the mistakes made at a water fountain i mean god you want to talk about a whole film about everything like you know getting too close uh you know looking actually licking the water out of the metal uh getting close and like bumping your tooth oh man so many things with water fountain uh so what do you think about that song the not the most important person song but the oops i made a mistake song do you think that that's catchy you think that's a good candidate um i i definitely like the visuals associated with it and i you know that's going to be the challenge is like is it this the visuals that make this song great or is it the song and so uh my wife and i are gonna have to reconcile that we're gonna come up with a master list of 16 and then we're going to compete and we're going to have you guys vote on the individuals uh competitions taking place between the songs we'll do that next week um in the meantime let's watch some more films uh this one is about women in defense circa uh i think world war ii [Music] yesterday the pioneer woman helped to win a continent today with the same spirit of determination a men and women are working to save this way of life working to save the nation from the impact of total war working to build a sure defense [Music] american women are alert to the dangers which threaten our democracy today women trained in science are testing and observing and working to discover new ways to meet this threat other women skilled and unskilled are asking what can i do to help this film will show what women are doing and what they can do every woman has an important place in the national defense program in science in industry and in the home [Music] silk is vital to national defense its most important use is for parachutes and powder bags new substitutes are being perfected in the laboratory to meet the growing demand normal wear is hard on clothes but not so hard as a machine like this and there is a direct relation between an abrasion tester clothing and national defense durability and economy are important to american consumers called on to make sacrifices in this emergency [Music] defense is more than military equipment and armed forces defense is keeping the nation strong and healthy in this important work of defense our scientists are experimenting with small animals to find out things about vitamins a complete report of their reaction and growth is recorded after they are given experimental food formulas during which they are carefully checked and weighed new and health giving diets are being developed through this research this woman is a modern pioneer a scientist she symbolizes the tremendously important work of women in chemistry in bacteriology in physics in nutrition in medicine in hundreds of hospitals and laboratories throughout our country men and women who work on the production of our defense weapons must be well nourished good nutrition is not entirely a question of income thousands of women are attending free lectures on how to buy food and prepare meals which are nutritious and economical [Music] women working in industrial plants need costumes which are comfortable and safe around machinery uniforms which meet these needs have been designed two-thirds of the jobs in defense industries can be done by women today and officials of the defense program are advocating more extensive job training for women and girls these girls already trained in our new defense program are able to turn out small machine parts more women are being trained in mechanical trades to meet the shortage of skilled labor for drilled presses turret lathes milling machines planos and welding equipment [Music] women are being recruited daily to help make planes for the nation's air forces three million women in factories all over the country are making things sewing strong fabrics sewing control surfaces for our fighter planes in a war in which so many machines and tools and so much metal is required it is strange how much sewing there is women are bringing a natural skill to an important job their efficient contribution is helping us to speed up production of bombers and fighting ships [Music] one parachute takes 65 yards of silk only silk has the lightness and strength essential in making parachutes women who have had special training in the manufacture of this product are the only ones who can be employed in these factories a man's life depends on every parachute so there is no margin for error the nimble fingers of these women are capable of turning out perfect workmanship on unbelievably fast running machines [Music] [Applause] [Music] these highly specialized industries are finding women extraordinarily efficient and are using them more and more in the making of precision instruments which are so essential in war today all of these instruments require ball bearings or roller bearings bearings so precise that experts must use a microscope for assembly this is work in which women excel giving it constant care and alertness women's hands thousands of them skillful patient and are assembling parts precisely dimension without which no bomber could fly and without which no mechanized land unit could move [Music] every ship that glides down the ways must have electrical switches women today are assembling gauging sitting together riveting drilling and making them this work requires fingers that move with lightning speed every defense worker doing her job well that's the battle of production and the essence of defense [Music] [Applause] [Music] women are working side by side with men on the assembly lines and in inspection units of munition factories millions of shells are moving off the production lines in our great plants from coast to coast shells for tanks and naval guns shells for coast and field artillery shells for anti-aircraft defense women are skillful engaging and checking for minute imperfections mass production is important when you realize that a single machine gun can fire fourteen hundred rounds a minute again we turn to the women who are asking what can i do for defense the american women's voluntary services provides instruction in many basic skills to over 80 000 women soon the office of civilian defense will cooperate not only with awbs but with all other private and public agencies to aid volunteers in obtaining the training they want a training indispensable in war valuable in peace the red cross today is the culmination of the work of a woman who pioneered under the duress of a war clara barton its founder determined that the care of the wounded should not be left to the unskilled today true to its tradition the american red cross volunteers are responding to the needs of war distressed peoples 25 million and more surgical dressings have already been sent to europe [Music] medical sciences newest weapon against death is the blood bank thousands of women today are giving their blood giving the essence of life to save life [Music] our history is full of the inspiration which our pioneer women left us as a proud heritage and again today american women are stirred by that heritage serving their country in the laboratory on defense production lines in the civilian defense services and in the home which is after all the first line of defense women have always been the guardians of the home and the children the future of our country and they are determined that our democracy shall survive and that our precious freedoms shall be preserved [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] word is getting around i don't know who did that life as fragile campaign i didn't do any research on that but that's something to look up um yeah uh so the women in defense film is awesome so great holy cow i love films like that we're made for that time period and talking about the contribution that women would make to the war effort um and how important it was on the home front um and how after that time some of that still stuck around so women's place in the family for some families changed uh sometimes for the better sometimes the worst but it was uh beginning to realize the importance of women as resources um in the workplace they just weren't baby makers uh thanks everybody for tuning in today um yeah let me know what you think about that uh oops i made a mistake song in the comments and i'll look and see if it's something that we should mull over and think about that food one two three four sorry that was a waste i don't know it was good but you know as far as listening for potential songs um it wasn't that great and it wasn't even really great as far as even some of the films that i have about food groups not nearly as good you know mulligan stew is so good i'm sorry so good in so many ways but uh if you like what you saw you can certainly please hit uh like subscribe the little notification bell to say that you want to know when we're doing this again which will be tomorrow at one o'clock um you can also buy his coffee which we will drink um i actually went to bojangles which is a local uh well it's a chain east coast chain got a sausage biscuit and some coffee this morning and uh yeah it was good it was good um and so you're you helped pay for that so thank you for that um but we'll be back tomorrow uh everybody have a good rest of your day your 4 21 day um please rewind and love each other with a little smiley face that has eyelashes and it's it's cropped there but there is actually um there's a peace sign there um that somebody a board library student put a board students probably in high school working in the library uh got bored rewinding to film it had some magic markers so that's probably the reason that exists i love it uh everybody take care and we will see you again tomorrow five four three eight seven six five four three seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four three eight seven six five four
