[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] a nuclear attack on the united states could result in a great amount of damage many of our cities military targets could be heavily damaged however even in an extensive attack the total area affected by the blast and thermal effects would be fairly small in relation to the total area of the country this would not be the case with radioactive fallout the area affected by fallout would be many times larger than the area affected by the explosions radioactive fallout from enemy weapons could threaten life anywhere in the country radioactive fallout then could be a serious threat to almost everyone in the united states fortunately protection against this threat can be achieved at comparatively little cost per person by intelligent community planning to aid communities in planning and organizing protection against fallout the office of civil defense has set up a nationwide shelter program the object of this program is to survey mark and provision existing public shelter spaces and develop enough additional shelters to protect the entire population against radioactive fallout in case of attack before attempting to select or identify shelters however we must first understand what constitutes adequate protection against fallout fallout from a nuclear cloud can be expected to settle on rooftops lawns fields streets trees sidewalks on any surface in fact where dust might collect of course radioactive materials generally cannot be seen with the naked eye fallout is illustrated in this graphic to show it descending from this fallout will come different kinds of radiation the most dangerous of which is gamma rays gamma rays like x-rays are quite penetrating they're also quite destructive to human tissue and may produce severe illness or death to anyone not properly shielded from them and the danger increases in direct proportion to the length and amount of exposure or in other words the dosage since fallout may remain dangerous for a period of days or even weeks a shelter must be able to provide enough protection so that its occupants will not accumulate a dangerous dose of radiation during their stay in the shelter this ability to shield its occupants from radiation is known as a shelter's protection factor a shelter having a protection factor of 100 for instance means simply that a person inside the shelter will receive only one one hundredth as much radiation as a person outside with no protection at all if this man outside receives a dose of 800 renkins in a given period of time the man inside will receive only eight rankings during the same period in other words the man outside would probably receive a fatal dose of radiation if received in a short time while the man inside the shelter would be unharmed why because of the type and amount of material which lies between this man and the source of radiation generally speaking any substance will offer some form of protection against radiation but the heavier the substance the greater the mass the better the protection the shielding quality of any material is directly related to its weight per cubic foot that's why heavy dense materials such as concrete or masonry provide much better protection than lightweight materials of the same thickness such as wood or plaster even steel or glass have high shielding ability but they're ordinarily used in such thin sheets that they provide very little actual protection earth or sand also provide good protection if the protective layer is thick enough in short the best shelter will be found where there is a large mass of heavy material between the occupants and the source of radiation there are two principal types of fallout shelters the family or home shelter and public shelter in many rural areas the family type shelter is the only practical one since it's the only one which would be easily accessible to the people who need protection also in many rural areas public shelter facilities are very limited in some cases existing structures are readily available such as the tornado shelters so often found on the farms of kansas nebraska and oklahoma of course protection against radiation must be provided for the doorways in other cases suitable shelters would have to be built either in basements if available or in convenient locations nearby however public shelters have several advantages over family shelters for this reason the national shelter program is placing emphasis on identifying modifying or constructing public shelters to locate and mark all suitable public shelter space a nationwide survey has been conducted by specially trained architects and engineers in towns and cities all over the country these men have examined all types and kinds of buildings to determine exactly what space is available in existing structures to be acceptable under the national shelter program shelter space must meet the minimum protection factor required by the federal government such space is most likely to be found in the basements of banks churches stores public buildings or in the inner core of large substantial buildings such as hospitals apartment houses older type school buildings or large office buildings in many of these buildings a surprising amount of space may prove to be suitable in this building for instance not only the basement would provide excellent shelter but also many of the upper floors the two top floors however could be hazardous because of their proximity to the fallout which would settle on the roof and the ground floor might not be usable because of the fallout collecting on the ground still this building would have more than enough space to shelter all of the people normally living or working here suitable space can also be found in the outlying areas of cities such as shopping centers especially where there are basement selling or storage areas in certain types of factory buildings in fire houses and buildings are not the only places to look suitable shelters can also be found in mines especially drift mines where the shaft is driven into the side of a hill or in caves or in highway or railroad tunnels or in subways however in some rural areas shelters can also be found in wine cellars such as those found in california or western new york state or in large potato cellars such as those in southern idaho of course adequate protection against fallout must be provided for the entryway we must remember that shelters are not strange or unique structures with mysterious protective qualities rather they are regular everyday structures which are all around us what we must be able to do is recognize their ability to protect us size must also be considered is the space large enough to house the minimum number of people required by the government or is it too small to be approved as a public shelter then there is the matter of location is the space located in an area where shelter space is needed or is it too far from the people who will be expected to use it and there are health factors while the object of the shelter program must be survival rather than comfort there are certain essential minimum health standards does the space have the ability to maintain bearable temperature and humidity conditions when filled to capacity is the air supply sufficient for the number of occupants even when inactive people require fresh air all of these factors protection size location health factors must be considered when selecting space for shelter under the government survey if suitable the space is eligible for marking with the approved civil defense shelter sign and for provisioning with the supplies furnished by the federal government these include water and food supplies medical kits sanitation kits and shelter radiation kits however the shelter space which will be identified through this nationwide survey will not be enough to accommodate all of the american people other space will have to be improved or constructed one way that space can be made usable is by fairly simple modifications of existing buildings certain types of buildings of course lend themselves to modification more readily than others a solidly constructed building such as this for instance may have a good large basement which needs only to have certain unnecessary windows bricked up to make it an excellent shelter space or this well-built hospital may very well have a basement which would provide apple shelter space or if a baffle wall were constructed in front of an outside doorway or opening to serve as a shield or barrier against radiation the space within could serve as a shelter also additional shelter space can often be provided by expanding the capacity of existing shelters in some cases it may be possible to double the capacity of a shelter simply by installing a fan to provide a greater flow of air in other cases it may be possible to break up unnecessary doors leading into rooms and thereby increase the amount of protected and usable space in the hall some buildings on the other hand do not lend themselves to modification which will produce suitable shelter space these include modern one-story school buildings which have large glass areas and no basements modern one-story factory buildings and the average motel in all such buildings it would be difficult and costly to provide adequate protection against fallout collecting on the roof and ground in any case we must remember that protection is a relative thing and even substandard space which does not fully meet the government requirements regarding size ventilation or protection factor may still be useful in an emergency and should not be forgotten whatever the difficulties the goal of each community should be the same to provide adequate protection against fallout for every man woman and child until this goal is met no community can be said to have an adequate shelter program remember fallout is a real and serious threat as long as there is a threat of a nuclear war but fallout is one threat which we can do something about by cooperating wholeheartedly with the national shelter program by helping to improve or increase the shelter space in our towns and cities we can help to ensure not only our own survival but the survival of our families our communities and our nation so we got some what is it i kind of got because we were hanging out in the basement um because there was a concern of a tornado so that made me think about fallout shelters so um that's where my brain was sorry if i brought you down regarding other current situations um it's it's fascinating in uh raleigh at least uh when weather trumps uh the uh what's happening with coronavirus it's you know it's serious because people love to obsess about their weather here in in raleigh and in north carolina because we get tornadoes we get hurricanes we get it all so there you go uh okay so uh i collect old educational films and i show them to folks like you um and so thank you for joining us uh this next film is uh maybe this will resonate with you it's there's there's more safety films here again today [Music] see you know closeness can be important when the other person is helping you watching out for you that's a good kind of closeness everyone needs to be close to others to feel wanted but sometimes some people will try to get close and touch you when you don't want them to and that is wrong no matter who that person is [Music] you can't do that i'll tell i don't like people touching me [Music] that's right speak up you have the right to protect yourself no one can come into your space unless they have a good reason and only when you say okay you don't have to put up with anyone best way to help take a bite out of crime [Music] [Music] so [Music] oh mcgruff um many of you probably remember him from all the public service announcements that he did um but there's a couple of films that he did that were made for kids actually some for adults too i have another one that's a mcgruff film but yikes the 80s man and something else um so on that safety uh tip uh here's one for those of you who miss working in the office um you forget how dangerous it was so here's you and office safety this morning when you came to work and opened your door just because someone picked up a pencil looked over some books had a cup of hot coffee did you think you were going to have an accident [Music] no one plans on having an accident least of all this pretty little thing [Music] a door cause an accident well you never know it's a swinger [Music] what can i say [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] could such a little thing as a felt marker cause an accident [Music] or a red umbrella [Music] or a green umbrella well filing cabinets aren't like doors they don't swing at all they're square just sit there and slide in and out oh [Music] now chairs are harmless they roll they swivel and they tilt [Music] they swivel they roll and they tilt [Music] now would anyone believe that a pencil could cause an accident a sharp one [Music] accidents will happen but like most advice office safety isn't taken too seriously [Music] [Music] still it would be nice if it were [Music] you might call office safety common sense thinking one step ahead considering the consequence of your action [Music] hey [Music] it can be a simple act such as reading the label or instructions on the instrument you're using such as this one do not use on electrical fires or use the handrail [Music] or [Music] caution men at work [Music] now office safety isn't really a joke each year thousands of people are injured and crippled and occasionally even killed in senseless accidents oh it's true statistically that officers are relatively safe places in which to work but accidents can and do happen even there and they happen in just the empty-headed careless way that we've just seen all right so what do we do about it well we can start by understanding that accidents occur when someone simply doesn't realize that their action or lack of action could prove hazardous well we drop a pencil on the floor we we forget to pick it up or or maybe somebody else drops a pencil on the floor and we don't do anything about it it seems so trivial well that's what accident rates are made of trivial things and you know with with just a little bit of extra effort accidents could practically be eliminated a moment to read signs and instructions moment to pick up loose objects or at best two moments to report them a moment's pause to avoid setting booby traps this is really all it takes a moment of your time and the exercise of your good judgment you know you might start by reading your office safety booklet [Music] i love it um i have a couple of uh office safety um films i'll bust out another one this week because obviously we're missing it we're missing the file cabinets and the hallway stuff and all that so we'll bust that out um thanks everybody for tuning in uh since it's lunchtime for many of us i have a film about food and this is one that i thought i was showing last week that was made by future farmers of america but actually turned out to be a film about the dangers of fast food called nutrition meal for america diet for america anyways the film i thought i was showing was food for america and that's what this is and this is features a giant hamburger and talks about where everything comes from so here's food for america enjoy [Music] wow [Music] ever thought about where a cheeseburger comes from we're members of the future farmers of america answering questions about and telling the story of united states agriculture that's all a part of what we're learning telling kids about the farming and agribusiness involved and producing food like a cheeseburger is one way an ffa chapter can work with elementary schools [Music] that hamburger bun started as a tiny wheat seed a lot happened to it along the way producing seeds maintaining equipment planting protecting against insects and disease harvesting baking and packaging those are just some of the steps in producing a hamburger bun [Music] you can't grow a hamburger patty you have to raise beef cattle to provide the meat to grind into hamburgers that takes a lot of time and skill growing feed grain or pasture breeding cattle shipping marketing and processing are all important steps in bringing that hamburger paddock to your table [Music] if it's a cheeseburger you want that means the dairy farmer and a whole dairy processing industry must work to produce that slice of cheese special feed mixtures proper milk handling and careful breeding they all ensure quality milk and high milk production cheese making is a science handed down for generations [Music] we sometimes want a little extra on our cheeseburger like pickles and tomatoes it's back to agriculture and agribusiness for cucumbers and tomatoes that means more testing by scientists and more hard work and management by the farmer [Music] it takes special recipes and know-how to produce that little round slice of cucumber we call a pickle [Music] kids in elementary school discover that there is plenty to learn when it comes to the agriculture and agribusiness involved in the production of a cheeseburger and we enjoy sharing some of our knowledge of agricultural production and processing we're learning more about agriculture in our high school vocational agriculture classrooms in our work experience programs and in our ffa activities the agriculture involved in making a cheeseburger represents only a part of what it takes to produce food for america [Music] that giant cheeseburger that those kids were bringing oh it's so great and then all the uh um assembly line footage of food being manufactured and processed um big fan of of that genre of uh a film shows the whole process of how something is made it's great but i know what you guys have been asking for i know you went all weekend and you were thinking to yourself what i'm missing in my life is a magical creepy puppet so here we go here's parents who needs them [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] oh that hurt did you see how far he threw me oh he just got me today but it's not surprising he doesn't seem to care about anything he didn't even thank his parents when they gave me to him i guess i'll have to help him really see all that his parents do abracadabra they won't see you you'll be invisible through and through [Laughter] hi mom hey are we having eggs hey mom what's what's wrong you're invisible jimmy what who said that i did jimmy me down here invisible wow but i don't want to be invisible hey mom she can't see you or hear you i made you invisible so you can discover something what that's for you to find out when you've learned it you'll be visible again learn what i'll give you a hint you can find out by watching your mom and dad hey wait i want to talk to you just watch your mom and dad [Music] first he watched his mother and began to see all the things she does for the family [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] he around the house for jimmy and for the family [Music] [Music] then jimmy remembered that besides all the things dad does at home for the family he also has a job [Music] at work he earns money so the family can buy food and clothes and all the other things the family needs [Music] then jimmy remembered that many of his friends have mothers who also work at a job during the day thank you huh thank you for putting up the shelves and you'll be ready pretty soon okay i'll be down in a minute for the first time jimmy was really seeing how many things his mom and dad do to help the family but how could he show his parents how he appreciated them what could he do [Music] hi jimmy lunch is ready will you call your dad please sure mom just a second [Music] hey i'm visible again mom can hear me i must have learned something what'd you learn jimmy well i just watched mom and dad and i saw that they do a lot of things they make my meals and take care of me and fix things for me and help me they're nice [Music] that's right but that's not why i made you visible again but you learned something better jimmy i did remember when you didn't bother your dad when he was busy or when you swept up the sawdust that's when you showed that you really appreciated your mom and dad that's when you really learned thanks your parents like to know you appreciate them [Music] you can probably think of some other ways to let your parents know you do jimmy okay mom coming [Music] dad lunch is ready okay jim i'll be up in a minute thanks for the puppet you're welcome [Music] ah yikes uh so i wrote a chapter in a book about educational films and i one of the things i was talking about was how educational films change from from decade to decade and this is a perfect example of that um the original film was appreciate your are appreciating your parents which has the main character a little boy who goes to bed but then he gets up and he kind of opens the door and he sees his parents doing things and so he learns to appreciate the parents and how to help and as a reward he gets an allowance so in the 70s um i don't think the filmmakers thought that that was a strong enough or compelling enough argument so they introduced this really scary puppet that made the little boy invisible um and if you think about it it's it definitely is provocative to keep kids attention but i i wonder like what are the kids focusing on are they focusing on the fact that their parents do all this work for them or more are they focusing on the fact that this puppet made uh jimmy invisible um because that's what i latched on to pretty hard uh when i watch this for the first time as an adult of course is like wow if i was invisible would i hang around the house what would i do i would like you know wow that's like a superpower um so it's it's kind of fascinating in that regard and that and it's like a lot of educational films in the 70s they used supernatural elements where they use these kind of extra elements it's like i showed lunchroom goes bananas which had uh all the food in the cafeteria going on strike and it had stop animation food and for some reason a kid had a rat on his shoulder in a tv news setting but um you know so those things kids latch onto those little things and the main message might get lost um this next film is part of a series called unicorn tales and i've watched the other ones in this series and it's a very strange thing because each one is this little narrative about another about a book so it kind of references it but doesn't and and so i'm really still trying to figure this out um of the ones that i've seen and i have a couple of these this one is by far the best it's it's a musical um it features a celebrity uh or who's someone who became a celebrity uh later on in her life um and it's just so good uh this i did this part of a show called um gotta sing got a dance gotta teach where it's using musical elements to um get kids excited about whatever the concept is and this one is so good um so this is magnificent major enjoy [Music] ah so [Music] so [Music] no but it isn't the cable that checks out gary did you test the verb renee did i'd see much better with knobs from a television set but well you've got to expect a few mistakes when you're being built by humans you're a robot invented by a mad scientist like in the movie oh goodness no i wasn't always a robot actually i started out as an electric toothbrush yes with three speeds and a traveling and then before i knew it i was a hot plate in a luxury hotel in cincinnati it was awful i fell in love with the refrigerator way up in the penthouse wow but i knew it could never work out she was too far above me so i left and took a job as a jukebox in atlantic city [Music] do you know to this day every time i get the hiccups my chest lights up and i play a golden oldie very embarrassing for a major entrusted to guard the palace of the past isn't that what this place is ever since 2157 the year 2157 wow i'm in the future where are the other kids right through that tunnel [Music] but isn't it exciting i won't have to do my book report book report sure i'm the wizard of oz what's the matter it's just a book that's what i thought it was put it away don't let the grand polonie see it who if the grandparent finds out that you have books huh he can [Music] [Applause] [Music] his imperial smarminess your friend and mine [Music] our children children do not shrink back in fear your polonie loves children oh it's true i am the most powerful man in the country some people fear me and hate me others hate me and fear me but sweet little children have nothing to fear from their lovable old peloni i smell something terrible it smells like intelligence could any of you children be carrying books only me sir it's just my school books books this is a job for the pollinates [Music] i'm not the chief that's the chief how did the chair get to be cheaper [Applause] tonight [Music] um what may i ask is a dear little cupcake like you doing with nasty old school books my dear child we haven't had school or books and ages no school really why don't you get rid of that school book you can drop them in here it'll get all burned up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but i can't find this book at school property nonsense apple sugar you just need to get into the new [Music] i know you'd rather play so why don't you throw [Music] fire is already yearning is [Music] books will not make you wise and reading's bad for your eyes i am sure you agree so why don't you give all your books to me [Music] see the flames growing higher [Music] [Music] you should listen to me burning your books will set your mind free [Music] oh [Applause] [Music] [Music] no stop i've toured with you long enough my young pretty pirates take her away [Laughter] ladies and gentlemen of the court distinguished members of the jury we must decide today fairly and with an open mind no matter how guilty she looks whether the prisoner will call herself daisy bunsen is innocent that she claims or whether she is guilty now we all know the terrible damage books can do crowds your little brains with all kinds of facts make you smart make you think books are like potato chips you try one and before you know it you want another and then another and before long you have fat brains books lead to reading reading leads to school and schools lead to tests [Music] i rest my case is there anything else you wanted to say [Music] telling stories just for you [Music] when [Laughter] [Music] you can visit yesterday [Music] open up its pages and [Music] you'll find things you never knew before each word is the key to unlock another door [Music] it's only [Music] it's the major you do you really want to be defended by this this toaster actually i never was a toaster but i did spend some time as a bread warmer in cleveland once ah go ahead i can hardly wait i call as my first witness doesn't make any difference who you call no one would be brave enough to disagree with their grand paloni i call the wizard of oz oh he won't be coming from there he'll be coming from here you're gonna read that that's not fair i'm the only one that's allowed to be unfair dorothy lived in the middle of the great kansas prairies with uncle henry who was a farmer and aunt em who was the farmer's wife their house was small for the number to build it had to be carried many miles quick dorothy she screamed run for the cellar total jumped out of dorothy's arms and hid under the bed and the girl started to get him at them badly fighting threw open the trapdoor in the floor and climbed down the ladder into a small dark hole as for the scarecrow having no brains he walked straight ahead and so stepped into the holes and fell at full length it never hurt him out however and dorothy would pick him up and set him on his feet again but the old crow comfort insane if you only had brains in your head you would be as good a man as any of them brains are the only things worth having in this world no matter whether one is a crow or a man where in the world did you come from from the land of odds said dorothy gravely and here's toto too and o and m i am so glad to be at home again book report thanks but i think i want to finish reading it myself but a little while ago you said you hated books yeah but since then i made a major decision i'll tell you about it sometime in the future [Music] wow i hope you guys like that as much as i did that that is so um so good the uh i i the the connection to wizard of oz it doesn't make sense and the other ones in this series also refer to other uh childhood books or books classic books and they they don't kind of jive they don't make sense and they certainly don't have the um musical numbers that this has i mean this was over the top the great palone uh singing the songs about burning books it's so good i really really like this film and i'm happy that i got to show it to you guys um somebody in the course of uh some of the comments i think i'm youtube asked about if i had uh this film and so i'm gonna show it real quick so here it is [Music] anyone [Music] is for every [Music] [Music] if you're curious or confused get information or a pamphlet at most pharmacies or a health clinic if you need help see a doctor um another great song uh what i like about this commercial it's a public service announcement is that it um makes vd look really attractive it has attractive people doing fun things having a good time and it's it's very similar to when they started running ads for herpes medication um on television and showing like people with herpes having a great time and it's same with hiv now i think there's an hiv treatment that shows people living a full life and so back in the day though it's like bd that looks awesome i want some at least that's my take on it um thanks everybody for joining me today for lunch and uh i will be back tomorrow um one of the things i'm gonna try to do this week is have guests uh i have some people that have been reaching out to a couple of people who i've worked with over the years who kind of helped who know a lot about my films uh and have actually shown some of my films in their own setting letting them pick some of their favorite films but also i'm gonna try to get somebody who actually was in one of the films and have him come and talk well show up you know virtually of course uh and talk about uh being in the film and maybe you can ask some questions in the comments we're going to try to get that to work this week might not work but but next week
