ow that uh that took a odd turn um hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and unfortunately uh their old 16 millimeter films so they capture parts of our culture that are regrettable um and uh all that beautiful city footage and then the uh tent show which uh featured uh kind of a sideshow aspect um which uh and then a Minstrel show which was something that happened back in the day uh wasn't great so let's uh Purge ourselves of that by uh watching a film about a cathedral enjoy your Saint Paul's Cathedral [Music] for more than 1300 years a Cathedral Church dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles has stood upon the summit of ludgett Hill the highest point in the whole of the great city of London this present magnificent Oedipus familiar and beloved to all real londoners whose Dome is probably the most famous in the world is actually the third of three great churches which have stood upon this sacred spot and witnessed the passing of the centuries the first built by ethelbert King of Kent in the year 607 survived over 450 years but was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1087. the second may be seen in the background of this famous old print of Latimer preaching at Old Saint Paul's cross it was an enormous and magnificent building with Aspire 489 feet high it lasted nearly six centuries perished in the Great Fire of London in 1666. [Music] the rebuilding of Saint Paul's as we know of today have begun in 1675 taking 35 years to complete its architect was none other than that prolific genius the great Sir Christopher Wren who laid the foundation stone himself of all great English Cathedrals none is so difficult of access on the outside from the camera's point of view Western polls from the bottom of Ludgate Hill it is almost invisible with the exception of the famous dome so submerged has it become in the sea of shops Banks and newspaper officers that represent our modern Commerce it is the Dome we Glimpse again as WE peer down Watling Street our tiny Cannon alley if we do a little climbing we are rewarded with the Dome again and half the towers with a glimpse of The Gables of the Western Front and of the South Transit while if we are really persevering a different Viewpoint gives us even a better result but if one has a feeling of frustration on the outside there can be none within so let us climb those famous steps and enter by the main doors our gaze is at once Enchanted by the vision that confronts us long clean lines guide our eyes right up to the distant High altar the Nave in which we stand consists of four Bays on either side and high above the archers runs acolis from an elevated position on a level at the top of the corners is a gallery behind a modern railing of wrought iron overhead are the great transverse arches of the ceiling of the name [Music] um moving directly Eastward towards the choir we come to Sir Christopher wren's architectural medical the Great Central Dome here eight solid pears and eight Mighty archers support the cornice of the famous Whispering gallery let us take a sweep up to the lofty circular Heights above us where in Greater detail is that curious and mysterious architectural accident the whispering gallery we have a softest whisper makes it Circuit of the Dome and returns to the ear of the speaker above the gallery rise first the drum and then a row of collasters above the palastas is the inner Dome of plastic prick then almost as though he considered this just Child's Play Ren completed his tour of horse by adding a cone of brick supporting a stone Lantern and ending in a gilded ball and cross the whole gigantic burden resting finally and miraculously upon the eight solid piers here let us pause a moment and consider the superb beauty of the Dome area the space and vastness are things at which to Marvel and stand in awe and now moving Eastward again we arrive at the choir and high altar this by many is considered the most beautiful part of the cathedral the fine altar is made of Emily and Brass though occasionally hidden from view by a beautifully embroidered bottle [Music] the great bronze candlesticks are reproductions from Originals said to have been formally an Old Saint Paul's to the northwest of the choir is a portion of the organ case and directly beneath it the Stalls of the archdeacon of London and other cannons to the right of a high altar and at the end of the South Fire stalls is The Bishop's Throne magnificently carved and surmounted by a miter before leaving this part of looking that um I think the splice broke on that um so anyways I think it's weird to play uh Wagner when it's showing a British um British Cathedral especially because I think this was before World War II so the Germans did definitely do some damage over there uh so behind me I have a film scanner set up what and we gotta film uh this is consumer skills buying for long-term use enjoy [Music] is there a particular way to make a long-term purchase items that a person may use for 5 10 years or the rest of his life are there any time-tested rules to follow for long-term buying a person has to look into the future try to predict the use he'll get from his purchase he has to try to predict maintenance and depreciation connected with the purchase how well does the average person do this to find out we've asked some people to turn the clock back to tell us how accurate their predictions about last year's big purchases have been the members of our group are Stan olendorf you know the way I see it you're spending a lot of money in you well you commit yourself Charles McCants if you have an average income like I do you either don't have anything saved or if you do you want to try to keep it Lisa Harrison think of what appliances mean or anything you buy for your home when you buy right you're building for your future Ben Hatcher I haven't bought many really big things yet but I have but I've tried to be careful about but how do you know each member has been asked to recall his expectations when he made a major purchase last year and to tell us how well those expectations were fulfilled through these people's experience they and we may learn about buying for long-term use but the biggest thing I bought last year was living room furniture I thought a lot about it of course it wasn't just my decision alone my wife and I worked it out together we had decided our upper limit had to be around 900. well if we win any higher it would put a little too much strain on the budget it was hard to resist a move up to a better line but we forced ourselves to accept it that was what we had to spend would you say that's a good rule set a limit and stick to it yeah I guess so that's a little disappointing too though I I mean all the features we wanted because just a little too much but we knew if we went over our limit we wouldn't be able to meet the payments thank you before we ever got to the store we decided on price and style but there still were a lot of things we wanted to check what was the quality of the fabric did the covers come off for cleaning was that the only store you went to oh no we checked out several stores but well this one just seemed to have the lowest prices for the quality we wanted you know a lot really went into the purchase of that furniture like we tried to predict what it would mean to us in the year to come what interest do we have to pay would there be any extra charges will they deliver the furniture free of charge well in the end we realized that we just couldn't break that price barrier we'd either have to go over budget or else or else well or else buy the upholstery pieces we wanted but for the wood pieces get unfinished furniture and finish it myself and that's what I did and you've had it a year now uh almost a year yeah how wise does that purchase seem to you now after a year has passed did your predictions about it come through well a couple of things came up we got a dog that's when we found out that the warranty didn't apply to the fabric isn't that a good point to read the warranty before you sign oh but they're so hard to read all the way through but worth it well yeah oh I got a raise this year so now we can replace the unfinished pieces whenever we want so some things worked out pretty much the way we expected but there was a lot that we just couldn't have anticipated how about you Charles did you have any big purchases this year well it wasn't like buying furniture or anything but I did buy Pam an engagement ring it was about 10 months ago and I was pretty shook up you know it wasn't so much buying the ring it was what the ring meant to Pam and I guess to me too I wanted it to be just right I wanted something real nice a ring that Pam would like for a long long time somehow the sales part didn't really matter I'd never bought any jewelry before but Pam knew what to look for [Music] Pam cared about how much I could we could afford so she looked for the best ring at the best price think about well the Jeweler helped us out he told us we could consider the stone in the setting separately we could get a less expensive Stone put in the setting we wanted so you see we had a real choice if we wanted to from later on we could even get a more expensive Stone what happened well the Jeweler had a ring that Pam really liked I didn't have enough cash for it it was a little more expensive than I'd expected so I had to buy the ring on an installment plan you know that can cost a lot extra you might have gotten a better buy from a private party the classified ads maybe you're right but it seemed important at the time to have a new ring sort of a symbol for Pam and me a way of starting off our future how do you feel about it now was the ring a good purchase I think so everything turned out all right Pam and I are getting married next month well everything worked out okay for you it's too bad it doesn't always happen that way it's hard to predict the future that's for sure I know because of what happened to me about six months ago my husband and I had just bought our first washer and dryer we planned on renting a new house with space enough for them and we had worked out how much they save us over the cost of using a laundromat well at the last minute the lease fell through so now the stored over my folks basement now there's a point for you base your predictions on solid facts don't buy unless you're sure you can make use of a purchase but it's really okay you'll be able to use it later sure that's right what I'm really more interested in is what were the standards you used to pick that washer well before I went to the store I read consumer Publications they compare the different manufacturer's products I found feature for feature ratings I learned about models features and prices with that kind of information I felt ready to go shopping we found this store with the model I wanted at the right price the store seemed reputable so our only job was to investigate the features [Music] thank you [Music] oh yes Stan we got caught once like you did so we read the guarantee and talked to the salesman about it before we signed [Music] well that's what we did and that's what happened I can't imagine any way to get a better deal in unemployance except to buy a second hand well if you're gonna buy second hand you really have to know your product personally I'd rather check out the discount stores of course you have to be sure they're reliable aren't there some kind of labels on appliances SEALS or something yes you can look for seals of approval that you respect and you should try to time your purchases you may not always be right about the timing but you do the best you can you wait for a sale a bargain or a special price you buy when you can afford it sure when you get a raise I got a raise last year and I made a big purchase it was my first job in my first raise and I bought something I'd wanted for a long time a stereo Hi-Fi outfit I love music and I wanted to get the best I could I've just got a little room so I should have gotten small speakers but like I said I love music so I got big ones I guess I should have looked ahead predicted how they fit in my room well anyway the salesman and I went over everything I could think of frequency and bass response inputs outputs tape decks quadrasonic 8-track you name it in the end I had to admit the salesman knew more about stereos than I did he was an expert and I should have listened to him especially about those speakers [Music] I should have looked ahead thought about the kind of sound they'd make in my room you know next time you're after a stereo you might think about buying a kit and assembling it yourself you can save money yeah that's right you you really do have to think before you buy that's the key think before during and after the time when you buy get all the information you can don't rush into it know something about the market for the item you're buying what did it sell for last year what's the trend in pricing and in features yeah and look ahead I mean when you think about what a purchase is going to mean to you in the coming year well it makes it easier for you to judge your buying this year these people have discovered it and aware consumers everywhere have discovered it that it's impossible to achieve one hundred percent accuracy in predicting the wisdom of any purchase over a period of time yet in buying for long-term use a person is obligated to investigate to think to attempt to predict the future only then when he knows the options should a person buy [Music] man big fan of that um big fan of mid 70s stuff that just resonates with me all that the clothes and the furniture and all the electronic devices and the the cars that's you know I guess I was 10 11 12 during that time so yes very much like it all right let's Zoom ahead catapult ahead uh to the 80s maybe 90s on this this is a kinescope so this was edited shot and edited on video then it was balanced to uh film so here is health-wise hello Hospital enjoy [Music] are you sure you've got everything I think so have you got your slippers in the bathrobe and your comic books and your markers I'll let you borrow my markers if you like I've got all that well Mom's waiting in the car to take you so bye spinner buy squirt spinner do you feel nervous sort of I'll come and visit you okay bye be good Rags bye oh Rags I hope you'll be all right he's going to the hospital for a couple of days hahaha hahaha when you think of how you're growing it should come as no surprise the more we learn about ourselves the more we realize [Music] there's lots of folks who'll help us grow we'll help ourselves because we know if we're happy and healthy too our bodies will do what we want them to it helps [Music] hi squirt spinner you've had those special tests what happened well yesterday they had me pretty busy they were doing tests called x-rays most of the time I just had to lie in bed either being wheeled around or waiting for other tests what's it like to be in hospital spinner I've never been in a hospital it's different kind of interesting because there's so many new things to get used to [Music] but there's lots of kids to talk to and play with and then there's nurses they're nice they want to make sure you get better fast so they take your temperature a lot [Music] different kids go to hospital for different reasons I got to know a girl called Tammy who came here for an operation okay there you go take your temperature and your pulse lift up all right girl okay close your lips not your teeth now don't fight okay and I'll take your just relax your hand okay the nurse told Tammy and me that taking your pulse and your temperature are tests that everybody has to have that tells them how fast your heart is beating and if you have a fever or not okay in your history ah great you don't have any temperature what else did they do all sorts of things I had a urine test a what Court I had to pee into a bottle what did they want your pee for just tests what Mark did you get not that kind of a test they took a sample of my blood too I didn't like the needle much but it only took a moment and they didn't mind when I said ouch then they sent the sample down to a place called the laboratory where there are people and machines to examine it they can find out a whole lot of things about you from your blood do you know they've even got computers in there computers wow they must think you're very important you betcha they really look after you in hospital tell me about what happened to Tammy she had to have an x-ray too hey Tammy now we need you nice and straight for your picture with your arms like so good it mustn't move at all during the picture okay otherwise it might be blurry and I'll have to do it again now the camera's going to make a really loud noise but don't worry about that and I'm going to ask you to hold your breath when I take it okay I'll tell you in just a minute hey now tell me hold your breath don't breathe that noise was a bit loud but Tammy didn't move and neither did I x-rays help doctors see parts inside your body so they know what the trouble is boy they sure kept you busy I wasn't busy all the time did you feel lonely or homesick some I guess Tammy did too [Music] there's a call button by your bed so you can always get your nurse if you need something or want to talk to her when you press the button a light goes on at the nurse's desk and she knows you need her [Music] you might have to wait a moment because nurses always seem to have a lot to do but as soon as she can she'll come to you nurses know it's only natural for kids to feel homesick and they're very friendly content yeah what would you like to drink okay what would you like apple juice or ginger ale ginger ale okay I'll be back in a minute did you have to go to sleep for your test no but Tammy had to go to sleep before her operation and that was the part that worried her the most but the anise the the doctor who makes you sleep came to talk to her the night before and that made her feel a whole lot better hi Tammy Dr Johnson is here and he'd like to speak to you about your operation hi Tammy hi how are you good to see you I'm Dr Johnson and I'm going to be your anesthesiologist tomorrow I'm going to be helping you to go to sleep and wake you up when you have your operation all right okay I've been reading your chart and I've learned a lot of things about you this is your first time here now we want to make it as nice as a visit as it can be here for your operation of Tammy I need to know certain things about you that aren't right here in the chart all right have you ever you know there's always somebody asking you questions in here because everybody's got a different job and they need to know different things about you I'm glad mom was there because I didn't always know the answers you count to 100 I don't know you don't know where you can try you go as high as you can on your account tomorrow and you'll find yourself drifting off nicely to sleep and then while you're asleep the surgeon your doctor will be doing the operation [Music] when the surgeon was ready Tammy was wheeled down a hold of the operating room it was funny lying in a bed with a seat belt on but it felt kind of safe too they gave Tammy a cap to cover her hair because everything inside has to be kept extra clean now Tammy was all set for her operation an operation is where a surgeon cuts open the part of your body where the problem is you're asleep so you don't feel it then the doctor can fix what needs to be fixed and sew the cut back together with sutures Tammy had had a needle before she left her room and by now she was feeling pretty drowsy it wasn't long before she met Dr Johnson again and soon she was asleep sleep all ready for her operation during the operation Tammy's parents stayed nearby in a waiting room they were concerned of course but they were also confident because they knew the doctors and nurses would do a good job and Tammy's operation was soon over she was taken to the recovery room she didn't remember much of it because she was still very sleepy okay Danny oh just open your mouth dear open your mouth right big that's a little bit of fresh air okay it'll just help make you feel a little better the nurses check that all Tammy's body systems were set to take over again after the anesthetic wore off they made sure her body had woken up even if her mind was still sleepy Tammy when Tammy completely woke up she was back in her own room at first Tammy felt kind of foggy and sore and she had something attached to her arm it was an IV IV stands for intravenous it drips liquid food down a tube directly into your bloodstream just want to make sure this is running properly Tammy Tammy needed the IV because her stomach was still asleep and not ready to digest food normally sometimes she took medicine this way too you seem to be getting along fine and look at all the cards you got yeah it's great I've had lots of visitors too so is Tammy and every time someone comes we show them around the hospital and when you don't have visitors you can go to the playroom with the other kids [Music] yeah there's lots to do at hospitals people to meet people to talk to and some hospitals have special people to play with you they know there are often things that happen in hospital you might not understand or that might have frightened you playing at those things can sometimes make you feel better about them there are other parts of the hospital where you can play too they have Toys crayons puzzles some even have things like sandboxes so much to do [Music] in Tammy's Hospital there were also teachers at first the teacher came to see Tammy in bed but when she was well enough Tammy took her lessons with the other kids friends could keep up with their schoolwork and not worry about missing anything ah sir dogs Mr mugs loves ah surprise okay here we have our numbers one two three show me which one comes before three here's your three before and after what comes before three two two good for you there we go we'll try another one for you that's right before she knew it it was all over and Tammy was all fixed up thank the doctors and nurses who'd helped her get better then with her mom and dad she was on her way home ah gee thanks squirt it's nice to be home you know what spinner I never thought I'd say this but I missed you but just in case you get sick again we've hired a nurse what oh I'm nurse [Laughter] when you think of how you're growing it problems of modern life [Music] for billions of years the sun has provided heat and light to planet Earth today solar energy is being harnessed by science and technology to regulate temperatures in buildings on farms for warming and drying crops in industry for refining oars and other tasks using heated water and Via enormous arrays of focusing mirrors to collect heat to run turboelectric power stations what follows is a report on new advances in solar energy research and applications [Music] foreign [Music] scientists and Engineers have begun to apply the sun's potential to solve the energy problems of our planet [Music] at the solar energy applications laboratory at Colorado State University solar heating cooling and air conditioning systems are under development to test and compare these systems three residential structures were built on campus one house has an all-air solar system this all-air system function in several ways [Music] in one warm air from The Collector is piped directly to the condition space to heat it as required by the thermostat if this hot air is not needed automatic dampers directed to a rock box where the heat is stored for later use when the thermostat calls for more warmth the stored heat is moved from the rock box to the condition Space by circulating air through the heated rocks if there is not enough hot air a conventional system goes on automatically the solar system may also heat hot water for domestic use via a heat exchanger coil in the first test house the all-air system is also used for cooling cool night air drawn into the system cools the stored rocks when temperatures rise during the day air is circulated across the cold rocks where it is cooled and then transported to the conditioned space the other two houses at Colorado State University utilize hydronic solar systems the only difference between the two is the type of collector use the hydronic system works essentially the same way as the air system except that instead of air being heated in the Solar collectors a non-freezing liquid is heated this liquid goes to a heat exchanger where it heats the tank of water the hot water is then pumped to an air duct heating coil air is blown across the coil heated and circulated to the conditioned space for cooling stored hot water is pumped to an air conditioner where this energy operates the unit water from the storage tank passes through a heat exchange providing domestic hot water when there is insufficient solar energy conventional backup units take over and Supply the required hot or cold air or hot water [Music] Industries belief in and support of solar power research is exemplified by the new sheet metal trade school in Detroit Michigan the building includes both solar space Heating and domestic Hot Water Systems so to both teach apprentices about solar systems and provide new knowledge on how to apply them more efficiently [Music] in Canada the national research council is engaged in several projects testing the practicality of solar heated homes most residential and commercial buildings here are maintained at temperatures already attainable by solar collectors foreign [Music] also takes energy and researchers are already improving food and fiber production by applying solar energy to aspects of agriculture one promising effort employs stored solar energy to heat greenhouses a project underway at Rutgers University in New Jersey the water is first warmed in this plastic container then flows by gravity back to the greenhouse to be stored Underground the stored hot water warms the building after Sundown or on cloudy days fostering plant growth at night curtains are drawn around the plants reducing the rate of heat loss [Music] solar heating of buildings for Animals is also underway in Mississippi Engineers are using two systems to heat a poultry house one involves direct warming of the air used to ventilate the house the other generates warm water to provide energy at night and on cloudy days via a radiator a plastic duct with holes in it distributes the heated air [Music] thank you a dairy farm in Maryland also uses collectors a thousand square meters of them to meet most of its heating requirements the heated water may be used at once for sanitation and temperature control or can be stored in an underground silo the final goal is a simple durable economical system that could be used on almost any Farm agricultural applications include warming water for animal and dairy equipment sanitation drying crops and heating buildings for animals [Music] at this Ranch in the Arizona desert solar-powered irrigation is being evaluated nine Banks of solar collectors follow the Sun as it moves across the sky the energy gathered is used to drive a turbine pump which delivers 50 000 liters of water a minute to crops on these arid Acres such systems should prove valuable in croplands with unreliable rainfall as well as in dry regions foreign applications of solar energy is the use of sun-warmed hot water in Industry to refine minerals purify chemicals or in other processes recently a major study of trapping and collecting solar heat using shallow solar ponds filled with water was begun at Lawrence Livermore laboratory in California First Step was to assess various alternate designs [Music] full-scale field evaluations were made in New Mexico an abundance of sunshine a dry climate and flat topography provided ideal test conditions each morning water is pumped into the containers solar heat penetrates the cover and is absorbed the absorbed heat sets up water circulation currents while insulation reduces energy losses by late afternoon the water reaches maximum temperature whereupon the hot liquid is piped to a central container for use in local mining operations such poor refining represents only one of the hundreds of industrial uses for solar heated water data on the water temperatures including temperature and evaporation changes is collected by sensors and recorded in these trailers ten percent of world energy consumption is for heating below 100 degrees Celsius in the future major industrial complexes may be completely supplied with energy by such solar heat collectors solar energy may also provide large amounts of electrical power the mirrors of New Mexico's Sandia laboratory Power Tower experiment now focus enough heat to generate 5 megawatts of electricity enough to meet the needs of several thousand people the New Mexico experiment is a forerunner of a 10 megawatt solar electric power plant being built in California 1900 computer controlled mirrors will collect enough solar heat to provide electricity for a small town [Music] still other Solar Technologies are being pioneered like these solar photovoltaic cells which converts sunlight directly into electricity [Music] at Sandia laboratory a new test facility is being used to develop more effective photovoltaic cell systems one approach plastic lenses that focus more sun power onto each individual cell [Music] in the future low-cost production of materials that convert sunlight directly to electricity could lead to many new applications [Music] roof mounted cell arrays on future homes could provide cooling Heating and electricity agricultural complexes might also be designed to be irrigated by solar photovoltaic cells [Music] while very large amounts of electrical power could be produced using huge Banks of solar cells together these and other solar energy research projects are finding new ways to use the power of
