AV Geeks Lunch 3-9

hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer and welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show we just watched almost 20 minutes of uh stock footage shot by filmmakers for coronet educational films um wide variety of different things it was two reels but each of the reels were compilation reels they were silent they were horrible white tape masking tape splices um which some of them ran through okay with a bump and some of them did not do so well and there's all an overlap but uh some beautiful footage in there uh capturing chicago definitely in some other uh places and things um i like it because it's it's sometimes they the reel is themed like they all came from the same uh film shoot and sometimes it is all over the place uh depending on whatever happened i'm sure that they got somebody to sit down and just kind of tape things up and you know just like here here's a bunch of boxes tape put them on these these cores um so we watch old 16 millimeter films here some of you are eating lunch while we're doing it um i didn't get lunch ready in time so i'll have to eat after or maybe i'll eat like during some time but um here's the school for johnny pretty isn't it no it's not the tail fins of a new car or the latest abstraction by pikatis it is for the purposes of this film at least a symbol of america's future to the doctor this is the advancement of medicine to the lawyer it's the promise of an orderly society under the law to the scientists it is the further conquest of the unknown to her it's well it's just about everything and to architect joe smith here it's all that and a tremendous challenge to boot you see if we take a close look and turn it around it's johnny now whether johnny turns out to be a good doctor a good lawyer a good scientist or jane turns out to be as good a mother as her mommy depends largely on us it depends on the education we provide for johnny and jane and on that education depends our economic future our culture perhaps even our national survival his and ours time was when our schools were designed only to cram names dates and figures into our children quite often they resembled a jail where children were incarcerated by law to prepare for life today we recognize that for johnny his school days are a vital part of life itself today's schools are built with the understanding that their function is not merely preparing for life but that in them pulsates life itself contemporary school design as you see it here isn't a style it's just the freedom to solve a problem without being forced into a certain look education of course costs money and we must find the balance between giving our children the education they need and finding ways to pay for it actually the school building costs only between seven and fifteen percent of the school tax the national average is about ten percent but the way that dime is spent affects the value you get out of the whole dollar that's where joe smith your local architect comes in you see mr smith your architect must translate johnny's educational needs into a building into architecture we live in architecture work in it worship in it and find pleasure in it but what about the cost are our schools today too expensive school building costs have doubled in the past 20 years however the average cost of all buildings has tripled thanks to good planning the school building is still the best bargain on the building market today there's another fact about costs the maintenance bill for keeping up the school year after year together with the cost of financing the building is much more important in dollars and cents than the initial cash outlay of building it's the annual cost that counts building costs are determined by the climate the terrain the site's proximity to water drainage and utilities roads and transportation facilities the availability of materials and of labor to name but a few items thus there is really no such thing as an average classroom cost one school may have a gymnasium one of many necessary spaces which are not classrooms in the usually understood sense but which are absorbed in the classroom cost another school that lacks a gymnasium although otherwise identical will have a lower classroom cost nor is the cubic foot cost a good means to express comparative value cubic cost talks of cubic space inside a building but look school a may have a higher ceiling than school b and therefore have more cubic feet inside but school b with fewer cubic feet may cost more because it has a more expensive floor or more elaborate plumbing it makes a little more sense to compare the cost of the square foot of floor space but before you let any comparative figures impress you be sure you fully understand what facilities you're buying and whether the cost includes such things as excavation site costs and heating wiring and plumbing but remember most of all that a school that is built in sun baked flat land in florida where oranges grow will be different from the school it's built on a windy hilltop in vermont where apples grow you can't rightly compare apples with oranges well how then do we arrive at the cost of a good school building joe smith is going to design a new school for the city let's see how he does it [Applause] like so many things in life this job starts with a conference mr smith as you see meets with the school superintendent who explains his aims needs and budget he brings in the school system supervisors specialists in such subjects as mathematics english music science physical education and home economics each explains what kind of equipment will be needed how many children will be taught in each subject what storage will be required and many other things sometimes as many as 20 or 30 of these conferences are necessary in the end architect smith has a book full of information from which the school building program emerges he now interprets these needs on paper in the form of preliminary drawings for the science classroom for example a drawing is made which sets out the basic space and form and the type and size of equipment required these characteristics will vary widely according to the type of teaching for instance will the students be taught mainly while sitting at their desks or will most of the work be done standing up at the chalkboards the answer to just this one question will affect the amount of wall space needed the amount and size of wall boards the amount of storage what kind of equipment it will hold and the type of seating to be provided as architect smith translates his information into basic drawings he makes a continuing check of costs at the end of this stage smith has a stack of drawings together they form a building plan the next job is to merge the various units their relationship affects the size and shape of the building how well it will function and how much it will cost [Applause] noisy function such as a woodworking shop a music room [Music] or a cafeteria must be separated from functions requiring quiet such as the study of science architect smith must arrange his unit so that the traffic flow is logical and simple the older children must be separated from the smaller ones see what i mean we don't want an oversized hubert to step on little johnny yes sir more conferences state and local agencies must be consulted on their regulations of such things as sanitation ventilation fire exits ceiling heights and lighting once he knows his building plan conforms to all regulations joe smith studies the components carefully and estimates the cost of the overall job then he presents his drawings and estimates to the superintendent and the school board this is the moment when the basic cost of the school building is determined by joint action back in his office architect smith now calls his staff and consultants together the specialists whose services are part of the architects overhead to assure the best planned school for johnny the structural engineer advises on the type of structural frame which would be best for our building the mechanical engineer advises on the heating ventilating and plumbing needed for the building in relation to the terrain utility connections and climate the electrical engineer advises on the type of electrical wiring and the type and location of lights for each teaching space from all these studies and recommendations joe smith evaluates the information and makes the decisions to balance economy with quality combine utility with beauty and most of all to create a sound environment for learning now smith and his draftsman start on the working drawings they also prepare specifications in bid forms they make separate drawings of every minute item down to the choice of coat hangers silly well it won't do to install a coat hanger which johnny could bend or break broken or lost coat hangers can cost the school system hundreds of dollars from the finished drawings blueprints are made at the same time mr smith's office prepares a book of specifications it describes the materials equipment installation procedures and quality of workmanship for everything that goes into johnny's new school this book encourages wide competition among contractors bidding for the job competitive prices mean economy joe smith as the school board's agent investigates the bidders to make sure they qualify and the contract is awarded to the qualified low bidder that is this is what happens most of the time sometimes it isn't quite that simple will the previous estimates hold up have material and labor costs changed is the building market too busy to create heavy price competition sometimes these questions pose real headaches to the architect educator team even to the point of forcing a design change or holding up a contract in this case happily both joe smith and the school board are satisfied with the bid so the building starts the site is readied utility lines are installed the foundation is prepared the walls go up architect smith verifies the quality and specifications of materials and supervises the work as it goes on he makes periodic visits to the site as the needs of the individual job occasionally joe smith may have to give a change order it may be something major such as a weak patch of subsoil that requires extra foundation pilings or something very minor such as the unexpected availability of a better window sash on many jobs joe smith and the school board may agree to place a skilled inspector responsible to both on the job full-time this man is known by the colorful title of clerk of the works tired well there's still more paperwork every month the architect has to certify that the contractor has done his job and should be paid he also keeps a running cost accounting of the work we made it johnny's new school is completed now smith a little worn perhaps but occasionally still smiling inspects the finished building since all requirements have been met he signed certificates of completion and payment the job is done building the school requires professional skill and teamwork yet even more than professional confidence is needed the solution of our school building problems like all educational problems requires the understanding and cooperation of the community such understanding will soon lead to the realization that schools can and must be planned in advance sound advanced planning leads to greater economy and yes better community living advanced planning helps the architect make more careful design studies and saves money here too oh no no this isn't what we want today through participation in our school construction programs parents and other citizens will soon find that beauty utility and economy are realized by avoiding the monuments and trappings of the past they will learn that cheap schools don't pay that schools must be soundly built of durable materials to last 40 years at least in order to save money on financing and maintenance yes we build schools for them for our children people of today and citizens of tomorrow these are the problems which joe smith and you face in designing the environment that forms an important part of johnny's life and thus all of our future so that's a fascinating film um visually you know it could have just been a film strip i mean really there's no very little motion or animation um but the film itself is kind of interesting because you know who's it made for and my thinking is it's probably made for school boards ptas city councils county councils basically to try to explain why it's important to have an architect work on your school like don't go with what the general contractor is doing you need a separate professional who costs money to draw up the plans excuse me um and uh so this is uh you know they made this film uh architects who were bidding on projects like this made this film to show beforehand say like this is why we're important this is why you're paying us a lot of money um whereas a lot of people who don't know what it takes to to build a building probably like well you know just get the builder to come up with plans they've built a school before they know what a school is um so yeah films like this are fascinating in that regard these coercion films um all right i gotta speaking of school i have a film uh set up here uh let's talk about school safety [Music] this is a story about safety safety at school you know what safety means soon this schoolyard will be filled with many boys and girls most of them will remember their safety rules they will remember how to be safe at the drinking fountain they will remember how to play safely so everyone can have a good time there are safety rules for walking up and down stairs too safety and courtesy often go together at lunchtime always are busy places without safety rules you can guess what might happen do these girls know how to play safely soon it will be your turn to talk about safety at school [Music] but first let's visit a classroom which may be very much like your own these boys and girls are enjoying a story together the teacher is helping them learn how to read better now it is time for them to have their milk whose turn is it to be the milk monitor it's bill and jack's turn they have been chosen to go to the cafeteria and bring the milk back they remember an important safety rule about walking in the halls the milk is ready for them to pick up they know how to carry the trays of milk carefully but what happens when others forget the safety rules what would you do to keep this from happening in your school it is recess time lucille and her friends are having fun jumping rope they know that when they take turns everyone has a good time the boys know how important it is to take turns too good shot now whose turn is it oh someone missed now no one can play what rules of safety and courtesy would you use hallways are very special places to practice safety these boys and girls have good safety habits always safety begins in the classroom now watch carefully what happens when we forget about safety and courtesy on a warm day a cool drink of water tastes good let's stop at the drinking fountain when we take turns everyone gets a drink faster but when we forget to take turns you know what happened what would you do to keep this from happening benny and his friends seem to be enjoying a fine game of kickball there is plenty of excitement and each boy gets a turn ah but what is happening here no one meant to kick the ball over the fence but there it goes out into the street what are they going to do now what would you do lunch time is a time to eat and a time to talk with friends fred hurried through his lunch today mary needs more time fred usually cooperates with his friends but today he isn't thinking what would you tell fred to remind him of safety and courtesy after lunch the children at this school know just where they are supposed to play each group has its own play area some groups are large and some groups are small follow the leader may be a good game too except when the leader forgets about safety and courtesy now one group has spoiled the fun of the other group why do you think this happened these boys and girls know how to walk up and down stairs safely can you tell what safety rules they are following when some people forget the rules you can see what happens what are some good ideas for stairway safety [Music] all right let me re-thread this i was gonna show something it just kind of ends weird um so my take on this is that you don't turn off the speaker sound because with some projectors if when you turn the sound on and off there's a loud thump uh as the power gets to the speaker all right so i was going to show you um every once in a while let me switch here um you can actually get some good color out of the film and i basically so here's what the the telecini's little control thing does so there's uh stuff for um framing there's stuff for going forward backwards you see this play there's stop then there's some color stuff here and this is a little trackball so um if we go back to a frame this is an example where i'm going to go ahead and zero out my corrections so boom boom boom you see that the film was pretty red and i was able to adjust to get the red down by adjusting the whites and adjusting the shadows the blacks and the gamma i was able to kind of get it back to um something that was better um so that's kind of cool and what it's doing is it's controlling the uh the leds in the light source and also the camera has some settings that you can go in and adjust so that's when we adjust things on the fly so sometimes we don't need to do that the color is good sometimes you know that it's um eastman kodak act chrome so it's it fades it wasn't a very expensive film stock uh to develop and to purchase like kodak kodak was more expensive to process purchase and so uh you know the color the the dyes start to fade pretty quickly so there you go uh this next film is inquest for cleaner air and water [Music] pollution fouling of the air we breathe and the water we use is a subject of continuing concern to all of us it is a subject we cannot avoid for all of us by the fact that we live and breathe are sufferers from and contributors to pollution wherever a summer rain washes loose soil into a stream wherever fuel is burned to generate power wherever new construction disturbs the lay of the land the inevitable unavoidable result is pollution about one-sixth of the total air pollution we contend with in this country can be traced to industrial processes improvement is difficult because a rapidly growing population demands an ever-increasing volume of manufactured products nevertheless progress is being made a leader and pioneer in the movement to stem the rising tide of air and water pollution is the steel industry the making of smoke was once an inseparable part of the making of iron and steel but by the start of the 20th century simple dust catchers the earliest form of air quality control were being installed on blast furnaces research and willingness to commit major resources to minimize the pollution problems of steel making have brought dramatic progress air is vastly cleaner around steel mills today as a result of the hundreds of millions of dollars the steel companies have spent to develop and install cleaning systems these complex and expensive facilities many of which are 99 effective in removing dust particles have brought vast improvements in the air environment of the nation's steel producing cities another major improvement has been brought about by the rapid conversion to the basic oxygen process this system permits the objectionable airborne products of the steel making process to be collected and precipitated from the air before it is returned to the atmosphere almost half of all the steel produced in the united states is made this way now and the percentage increases each year air quality control systems on the bofs and other types of steel making furnaces capture thousands of tons of particulate matter so that it never enters the air these devices are expensive to build operate and maintain they make no dollars and sense return on the investment but they provide indisputable evidence that the steel industry is doing something effective about air pollution another basic raw material of steel making is water for years now since the 1930s steel companies have been conducting research programs to develop the systems and equipment necessary to improve water quality large intake facilities are required to meet the water needs of a basic steel producing plant for every ton of finished steel produced something like 20 000 gallons are needed for cleaning and cooling purposes for example mill scale which forms on the surface of hot steel is removed with high pressure water [Music] the scale and water goes into settling pits the scale settles out and is recovered huge clarifiers trap and remove oil sludge and other potentially harmful ingredients excess heat is dissipated in large cooling towers the result is clear clean water which can be recycled back into the mill for another round or discharged into a lake or stream where more often than not it enhances water quality settling basins thickeners scale pits filters separators waste lagoons all of these have a single purpose to make american steel plants examples of one industry's efforts to help preserve our nation's waterways for all the purposes they must serve today and for generations to come the american steel industry's investment in clean air and water is rapidly approaching two billion dollars the return is not measurable in dollars and cents it is measurable in a better human environment we are proud of our progress it will continue [Music] thank you the american uh institute the steel industries for uh all the work you've done to um keep our water uh and air cleaner this obviously was a puff piece uh show created to say that no steel mills are we're great look we're paying attention was because they were being fined of course and getting a lot of trouble um and you know they did do a better job but uh one of the things that a lot of industries lobbied very hard for was to that co2 was not added to the list of pollutants uh that they were scrubbing um that they said co2 occurred naturally and it wouldn't be a problem so we saw how that bit us in the butt all right it's been a while and i have more uh films uh from this series the inside out series uh and nit national instructional television i love these uh open-ended uh inside outs um you know i love any of the films that are open-ended that are left to you with you trying to uh discuss afterwards and reconcile what's going on and how how it will play out uh this one was particularly good um because it certainly it capitalizes on you know we brought up all these memories that i had with meeting a group of new kids like in the worst possible thing that happened was you're trying to fit in and then suddenly all these kids come towards you you're you don't know what they're saying and you know they seem hostile and um you know it's it's like the worst nightmare you could possibly imagine you know never mind the fact that he speaks spanish and they're yelling at him in english um yeah anyways really really amazing stuff and you know of course i was six when this came out and so it it resonates with me the time and the place and the clothes and all that stuff the cars um uh so it's a beautiful day here in raleigh but that means pollen is beginning to um show up which means that now i have to go out and wear a mask not because of covid but because of pollen it's such a delicate little flower um thanks everybody for tuning in today uh so my special guest uh we'll probably have to postpone that until next week uh uh yeah because he has to figure out his um technology so that we can have him live but i should say he is a filmmaker from minneapolis so i know at least one of you on the comments on youtube is from minneapolis so you might be able to guess who it is um but uh
