hello everybody i'm skip alzheimer welcome to our lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films most of them are from my collection that last one was actually from a another collection uh the academic film archive of north america which is in san jose california it's run by a man named jeff alexander and he has over the last couple of decades has built a relationship with many of the educational filmmakers and has basically had films donated to his collection which we helped scan and so those were from home movies or outs from a professional filmmaker whose name i can't remember and i don't have the notes handy to tell me but um you know so some of these i think we're home movies and some of these might have actually been used in a uh a professional production but you can tell they're uh it's steady they they were not afraid to use the tripod which a lot of home movie people don't do uh also the cameras were really good everything was shot really well composed really well uh the speed you know is like all over the place and that's the thing is this was a compilation reel so they shot some footage and they spliced it together and some of it was shot at 18 frames a second some of it was shot at 24 frames a second some of it might have been shot at 16 frames a second and that's um the challenge that we have when we scan films is is speed correcting it um it's not a one size fits all the other thing is um a lot of modern digital technologies don't support a frame rate that's less than 24 frames a second so when you make what's called a dcp a digital cinema package you have to pad the frames to at least 24 frames for it to play back right and that's frustrating because it's you could it's digital so you could probably go from like two frames a second to or one frame a second to you know 120 frames a second but they just ignored amateur uh stuff so it's it's a dilemma we transferred it at 24 because that's a standard for that scanner that we use and then you know we would speed correct it accordingly but i forgot to speed correct it so there you go uh let's see so uh today is the this is the first in the um what uh rick k has uh coined as the skipple header um we're doing three shows today um so uh this is the first one which is our lunchtime show then i'll be back again at three for the um hunt library show then we will be back again at at what time i can't remember what time um i just sent a link uh um ludicrous for to show camera with the uh the science museum that's at six o'clock so um i'll put a link in the um in the comments on facebook and youtube uh you'll need to register if you want to see gamera tonight we're showing the uh wonderful giant turtle movie gamera um in honor of reptile and amphibian day which is this weekend at the science museum or coming up this i don't know when it is well i'm just like flipping around don't quite know what i'm doing that's life um anyways uh i'm just going to show what i've got threaded up on the the projector or the telecini here uh it has don knotts in it which is awesome but it has puppets in it which some of you really can't tolerate so at least they're not marionettes alright here we go [Music] there once was a forest so green so deep and so far away from the rest of the world that all the animals who live there just called it deep forest life had gone on here undisturbed since time first was the animal parents carefully taught their ways to their young in most animal families the parents took charge personally of the little ones learning okay son i just watch all day pay attention now okay now who can remember what we call i know aileron very good ace other animals entrusted the important task of teaching to the wisest and most skilled of their but kind tranquility of deep forest was not to remain there was a growing world outside a world that wanted more space a world that wanted the crystal pure streams of the deep forest to drink and to water their crops the animals saw their world changing [Music] and they grew worried about their children they got together and decided to call in an expert who would know how to train their little ones to face the new realities dr harlow a boar from the state office of education a pedagogues pentagon the animal parents immediately called a meeting with dr bohr he explained his philosophy of modern education my dear ladies and gentlemen we must rise and overthrow our animal anachronisms and prove that we can be concomitant to the times our antiquated aboriginal roots have proved turbid we must extirpate our old ways and keep up with the world outside no more homespun education amateurs teach others how to be amateurs if your children are to survive everybody has to learn how to do everything educate the turtle animal to bring forth the refulgent renaissance animal the fittest survive our motto must be we can't be individuals together simply stated objective perusal of a multiplicity of contemporary phenomena compels the conclusion that maximization of pedagogical efficacy would tend to necessitate a reorientation of present goal intensive resource utilizations with concompetent restructurization of format correlation role modeling apparati and generalized obligatory curricula this new world school will be our solution and our salvation what's wrong with the schools we've got outmoded obsolescent anachronistic it's a new world for your little ones to succeed they need a new school where all animals can learn a light to blossom into true competency any questions a few of the parents were skeptical but they all wanted to get back to their everyday business so they gave dr bohr full responsibility to set up the curriculum in his new world school his first official act was to hire a teacher ms mona owl came highly recommended though she had taught only night school she got right to work planning the coming school year now let's see um diving 101 in the morning uh no no no the fishing lab conflicts um late autumn the nut gathering unit oh i forgot borrowing practice oh now where are those hibernation schedules oh dear i i need some help well i can't hire any more teachers the animals won't stand another tax hike it can be rather beastly about that sort of thing best we make do oh bye ah i tell you what let's reduce the curriculum to just four basic subjects running climbing swimming and flying oh those are basic we'll have all of the animals take all of the subjects at the same time there now don't you think that streamlines the program as soon as the curriculum was announced there were objections from the parents we don't uh want to make trouble dr bohr but the whole neighborhood got together and decided somebody had to say something you see a lot of us make a living by digging and we don't see why you can't have digging and burrowing classes i'm pleased you've involved yourselves in your children's future but i wonder if you parents have any conception of the problems of administration crowded classrooms lack of adequate funds groups making trouble reptiles are demanding scholarships then there's transfer credit problems there's environmental impact to think about i'm afraid that at presents and digging courses are not practicable but we've always done that's how we live a lot of people are saying that mr gopher hello there and so came the much anticipated opening of the new world school hello was suffering a little from new teacher anxiety syndrome well i'll just have to do the best i can the next few days and weeks were well busy posie that was wonderful oh thanks who's next now how about you sadie well it's this coat teacher [Music] i don't want to get it what you know the whole thing is dumb dumb dumb dumb nobody digs in water [Music] well how about you ronnie well i suppose my scholarship is at stake now we all know how to climb from watching the film strip who will go first i suppose the good name of my family is at stake [Music] we're next coach oh that is not the accepted method in this unit come down this instant missal made ace stay after school i'm to the top i will not fly i will climb to the top i will not fly i will climb to the top i will not fly i will fly to the top i will not climb i will fly to the top i will not climb it i will climb to the top i will not fly ace did exceptionally well in flying however he occasionally developed charlie horses from swimming practice which severely affected his performance level posey also did well in flying however the blisters from climbing threw off her landing mechanism [Music] to help ronnie prepare for the flying unit his dad read him an inspirational biography of dumbo the elephant i suppose the reputation of long-eared animals everywhere is at stake contact contact when it came to flying little gopher always succinct had this to say [Music] following little gopher's lead all the groundhogs prairie dogs and a few of the foxes and field mice stomped home complaining to their parents who immediately forced the school board to start a school of mines under the direction of a badger this school specialized in burrowing digging and other related technical [Music] courses back at the new world school running was of course one of the required courses ronnie was by far the fastest but he was worrying too much about swimming and flying sadie your time is down again today sadie was also very good at running but she missed practice frequently to help her parents gather nuts for winter ace got shin splints from running and had to keep his legs taped hey my wings ain't got shin splints you're disqualified posey had to drop swimming so she could catch up and running teacher teacher you know how hard i work yes i do you're passing with straight teeth you'll graduate tell me posy do your parents help you with your homework oh no i get it wrong all by myself but before climbing and running i could really fly by and i've always dreamed of becoming a really great olympic swimmer but [Music] i didn't notice i'm so sorry i thought if i worked hard i could get an athletic scholarship to drake university oh but now i can't run climb fly or swim all i'm taking up in school is i just feel terrible about what's happened to posey i i can't stop thinking about her oh she'll outgrow it most of those ducks just float through life meanwhile isn't our streamlined curriculum a joy for most of the students yes and no some of the parents aren't satisfied with the whole approach if you'd come and and visit the school i'm sure you'd i will as soon as i can but i i'm sure you can handle everything in the classroom i've had some very very good reports about your work but dr bohr what can we do to help posie now there are funds available i'll make out an application and so by the end of the school year ace had stronger legs but flew by jumping along the ground sadie is having adjustment problems her parents are considering sending her to the badgers private school the school where flying is left to the birds and swimming to the fishes posey discouraged now spends a lot of her spare time down at the track running it seems she wants to do something well again ronnie passed flying but developed a fear of heights he passed swimming and running by a whisker and was named valedictorian [Music] goodbye ace goodbye coach sadie you take care of yourself [Music] decided she's not ready for full-time teaching yet and flew off to graduate school for more in-depth preparation any of you dr bohr he's getting ready for the next year taking into consideration the differentiated stimulated accountability feedback strata i should be able to get some title 24 funds then a task analysis on parent-teacher student administration and curriculum planning feasibility some behavioral objectives tailored to the diagnostic multimedia monitoring contingency system [Music] [Music] so i i kind of looked this title up um and it predates this the actual story fable predates um the film by maybe for the 40s i'm not i haven't found like a real source i've just gotten kind of generalities but it was supposedly written by a cincinnati public schools administrator um about you know having a having a generic curriculum doesn't always suit all the students um but obviously that was not made for children uh you know it has all the trappings of being for children but it is not for children and that's the thing that's interesting is so they use puppets and it's like okay huh you know it's a fable um but uh yeah and then the other thing is i don't think there's a mention i don't remember there being i stepped away to get some lunch but there's a the last paragraph of the story so i can bring it up real quick um the end of the year an abnormal eel that could swim exceedingly well also run climb and fly a little had the higher average and was at the top of the class prairie dogs stayed out of school fought the tax levy because the administration would not add digging and borrowing to the curriculum they apprenticed their child to a badger and later join the groundhogs and gophers to start a successful private school so that's interesting um and then so that store that fable shows up on a lot of homeschooling sites um or specialized education sites as a justification for doing that so there you go um we haven't watched sid davis in a while sid davis of course um was uh called the king of calamity uh loved showing teens in trouble um and wouldn't rarely ever use sync sound so it was always a narrator talking and it's generally the same narrator so this one's the bottle and the throttle enjoy [Music] it can't happen to me that's what you said wasn't it bill but it can and just didn't you're not quite sure why let's see if we can find out too many minutes ago that young woman and her child were happy and healthy now their young bodies are crushed and racked with pain maybe they'll live and maybe they'll die but one thing sure the next few minutes hours or maybe days their lives will hang in the balance and you'll have to live out those minutes hours and days knowing you were responsible the police will measure out the skid marks determined where you applied the brakes give you a sobriety test and it will all go into a report that will be reviewed in court maybe you'll be found guilty maybe you won't but you'll never outlive the memory of waiting waiting to find out if the mother and daughter will live or die then the police are at you with questions where had you been had you been drinking would you submit to a sobriety test sure why not after all you'd only had a few beers you're not drunk of course you're not drunk not in the common sense of the word but your driving ability was measurably impaired how could it be you feel fine but what you didn't know was that it only takes a few beers to take the keen edge off your driving performance and slow your reaction time you see alcohol is not a stimulant it's a sedative a depressant oh sure the first few drinks make you feel more alive and responsive but actually as the alcohol enters the bloodstream it slows down normal operation of the heart and nerve centers and depresses the inhibitory mechanisms of the brain it removes inhibitions and social restraints this is what gives us the feeling of stimulation you have more assurance but less self-control and this is when the danger begins you get a superman complex behind the wheel at the very time when your driving skill and mental outlook have been seriously damaged when ethyl alcohol which is the foundation of all liquor enters the circulatory system through the stomach it's oxidized by the liver and turned into heat energy in the form of calories unfortunately the liver can only process about 3 8 of an ounce of alcohol per hour that's about the amount and three quarters of a shot glass of whiskey or a short beer when more alcohol is taken the liver is unable to process it and it passes into the bloodstream and is carried to all parts of the body as the percentage of alcohol begins to build up in the bloodstream the first part of your nervous system to be affected is your judgment center located in the frontal lobe of the brain this is the area of the brain that determines right from wrong the alcohol works as an anesthetic and we adopt a i don't care or sure i can make it attitude we contemplate stupid things like passing on a curve or a hill we become easily exasperated by the driver we feel isn't going fast enough and we take chances we wouldn't ordinarily take to pass him true enough we're not drunk at least not legally drunk by that we mean our blood alcohol content is still below the 0.15 considered by law to be legally intoxicated but those few beers we had can reduce our driving ability as much as 25 to 40 percent a report by the american medical association clearly showed that two shots of 100 proof whiskey or two 12 ounce bottles of beer can inject a dangerous amount of alcohol into our system if we're driving and the worst part is that we probably aren't aware of it even an hour after having a couple of beers our reaction time to light signals can be reduced as much as six percent in another test it was shown that after a three ounce drink it took as much as 12 seconds for a person to regain his normal sight after being blinded by the lights of an oncoming car at 60 miles an hour that would be over a thousand feet or a fifth of a mile of blind driving alcohol sometimes causes visual distortion too things become blurred and indistinct another problem which often goes unnoticed by the driver but is no less dangerous is tunnel vision tunnel vision is a phenomenon where your field of vision becomes increasingly narrow that is your periphery or side vision is decreased this makes you vulnerable to cross traffic and is often the cause of side swipe or intersection accidents the national safety council says that two normal cocktails or four beers can reduce visual acuity as much as wearing dark glasses at night now only a fool would drive at night wearing dark glasses but nobody thinks much about driving after four beers the effect of alcohol on vision is particularly serious because ninety percent of the driving decisions we make are based on how well we see so if you must drive don't drink if you do drink and must drive wait let the effects of the alcohol wear off a good rule of thumb wait one hour for each bottle of beer or each ounce of whiskey the more alcohol you take the longer you should wait until it is safe to drive because the danger of having an accident increases with the amount of alcohol in your system for instance under identical driving conditions a person with 0.05 percent alcohol in his blood that's about two drinks or a few beers is twice as likely to have an accident as a person with no alcohol in his blood with .10 three to six drinks are a couple of quarts of beer the chances are three times as great and when the blood alcohol has reached point one five percent which is the legal limit the chances are ten times as great a common misapprehension of the drinking driver is that when he first drinks that is during the absorption period as it's sometimes referred to the individual readily feels the effects of the alcohol but during the wearing off period he becomes less aware of these effects and deludes himself into thinking he is sober but he is falsely comparing his maximum feeling of intoxication with his beginning feeling of sobriety he may be far from sober and is only making a dangerous comparison we are all aware that alcohol and gasoline don't mix but many of us think it can't happen to us but it can and does in ever increasing numbers each year and it isn't until we have an accident that we seriously ask ourselves why we had that extra drink [Music] we all find excuses for drinking bills weren't so different from the rest a need to belong a desire to go along with a group try something new it may start innocently enough a few beers with the gang it is a social custom of our time but today that social custom is invading our society at a younger age than ever before the few drinks that the social drinker may take don't seem to present a serious danger but the trouble with drinking and driving is that it is always too late when the emergency arises and our reactions are too slow to avoid disaster it is readily agreed by authorities and tests that driving skills are to a degree a matter of habit build up over long periods of practice it has also been proven that the latest driving skills mastered are the first to go when under the influence of liquor therefore the older more experienced driver is less likely to have his skills seriously impaired than the younger less experienced driver one must be able to judge speed and distance follow traffic patterns make necessary adjustments and be able to react quickly to emergencies after a few drinks the good driver is no longer capable of doing this he has become a poor driver and is a danger to himself and others this happened to you didn't it bill sure you passed your sobriety test it showed you had only .08 blood alcohol about half the legal limit they can't convict you on drunk driving can they but you'll always have to face the fact that those beach party beers were a contributing factor in your accident if you hadn't had them you might have hit the brake pedal a second or two earlier those skid marks on the asphalt would have stopped on the right side not the wrong side of that young woman and her daughter the report just came through the little girl died on the way to the hospital and the mother will probably never walk again no matter how your trial comes out you'll always have to live with those facts wouldn't you bill a child dead a mother crippled not a pleasant future to ace at the age of 18. [Music] that obviously wasn't the film bionics but that was bottle in the throttle uh sid davis man he uh this is that's his his deal that's his uh his setup you know you have basically a bunch of uh um you know teenagers involved in something that goes horribly wrong and uh it plays out you get to see what happens because of their bad behavior whether it's related to joyriding whether it's related to uh jumping in a car with a stranger you know you you see it uh and it's all narrated and somebody pointed out it's like it sounds like the narrator is drunk and it's like yeah huh it sounds it looks like uh uh that's interesting it looks like facebook just blocked me for some reason that's weird oh facebook okay so um uh that's just threw me for a ringer anyways all right so i'm going to show you another film and i'm going to see if i can get facebook back we'll see what happens uh this film is i'm just going to say the title i'm going to let you try to figure out what's going on in it i got this from uh the person who actually made the film and he didn't really explain it and i was transferring it i was like what is going on here and i uh thanks to youtube actually saw an explanation of what was going on here so um this is okefenokee [Music] [Music] [Music] though [Music] pokey [Music] [Music] like i told you before [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] for very long [Music] [Music] whatever you don't [Music] [Music] [Music] you [Music] [Music] do [Music] um [Music] before you go further we just thought we'd warn them there's creatures of our head that are liable to scorn you and we've heard that it's true there are some don't get through i turn around and go back [Music] is this christmas time is blissful time and he'll keep [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is this christmas time is blissful time and he'll keep [Music] [Music] woohoo [Music] oh [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] is [Music] and you'll never go wrong [Music] like i told you before once you have tried it [Music] me [Music] so bye now y'all heard back in here all right um what an odd thing uh and so obviously it is a is documentation of what's called a dark ride at a theme park in amusement park some people said this is very similar to it's a small world and somebody said is this is a ripoff of splash mountain on facebook my friend ian um found it it's the tales of the ogee finoki and it was at six flags over georgia uh which was in which was an amusement park in georgia and according to defunct land which is a uh kind of a video podcast that's on um youtube that looks at old amusement parks and old rides and the history of them um this actually is based on uh uncle remus stories because there's a rare fox prayer rabbit rare bear and that this was actually ripped off by disney for splash mountain so splash mountain came out after this and they definitely invoked some aspects of what was in this ride uh in splash mountain i haven't been on splash mountain so i couldn't tell you uh and in fact now they've actually pulled those elements out of splash mountain um so uh because they refer to song of the south which is a movie that uh disney is not interested in promoting in the united states anymore um so uh i noticed that some of you could not stand this film but what i think is interesting is to kind of pull back a little bit and think about why was this film made like what was you know it documents the ride but for who it's not for kids necessarily it's not it's not an ad is it something that was made to show to um people at that run the park uh you know the board of six flags to say like hey this is what we did um i'm not sure it's a weird kind of historical artifact and it has the music which somebody said maybe there's a souvenir wrecker out there it's possible um but it um yeah it's a it's a fascinating thing and that's why i like collecting 60 millimeter films because sometimes you'll have these artifacts that capture something for some reason and we don't know why um and uh i have not been able to follow up with the person who gave me the film to to say like what's the deal like why did they make this who is this made for but um you know as a fan of amusement parks this is fascinating to me i never made it to six flags in georgia uh because we had carowinds here in north carolina and kings dominion and then of course we would go to disney disney world back in the day so anyways thanks guys for tuning in today um i'll be back at three um on facebook and youtube and then later tonight uh at six o'clock i'll be showing gamera and it's it's with the science museum and um you have to register and i put the um the link in the comments uh thank you calvin for the coffee obviously i needed it today and i'm gonna still be chugging along uh later today but um yeah i have to go run to the archive real quick and do some stuff but then i'll be back and we will hopefully i'll see some of you on the second screening of these uh skipple header thanks for kay everybody uh if i don't see you i'll be back on monday everybody have a great rest of your weekend and uh we will see you next time you know please rewind and love each other and that includes yourself uh as always and um you know i'm sorry if that uh okefenokee song is going to be bouncing in your head today but not really take care everybody you
