hello everybody welcome i'm skip alzheimer and this is the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films um that last one was uh i got it uh i scanned it for a film collector filmmaker craig baldwin who is uh amazing found footage of filmmaker and i've been slowly scanning stuff for him uh and he labeled this one anarchist bowler and uh there was no title on it and you could tell that at the beginning there was that weird kind of blobbiness that was water damage so basically what happens is water got on the film like droplets of water and it made it between the emulsion and the base and the emulsion began to it's because emulsion is basically like a gel it got um dilute diluted and kind of smeary and it can be really beautiful especially color footage when it happens but it can also be really horrible if it's footage that you really are invested in and you want it to be looking clear and okay but anyway so he labeled it anarchist bowler and i was like huh i wonder when this film was made it's not really telling me and the release uh title screen talks about it's made for a keystone projector so it's uh it's basically was made for a home uh showing at home and uh came out 1920 and so i looked up bolshevik bowling and brave studios and it came up uh with the title the bomb idea and i guess the premise is that there's a bowling ball and then there's a bomb and i just read a really interesting just in doing the research i read an interesting uh article that said like why is it that in cartoons we think bombs look the way that they do and they mention this cartoon as one of the earliest examples of showing a bomb looking like that and the thing is like by 1920 bombs didn't look like that anymore so but it still continued on a long history uh in cartoons and in uh comics and things like that so yeah that's an interesting little history right there um something i was super interested in when i was a kid of course because i was a big fan of the six million dollar man uh was bionics this next film was about bionics i recently watched six million dollar man that's a sad sad tv show it's very sad the music is really sad um steve austin is basically being experimented on beyond his control he should have died but they brought him back and they put a bunch of parts in him that were that you know gave him super strength but also he was always having problems with him so if you ever watch it again it's it's it's kind of an interesting thing mike you know when i was a kid and watching it when it first ran i did i only caught you know i only picked up on the cool stuff but uh yeah it's it's a really interesting kind of even the music is kind of somber um and you know steve austin's kind of sad he has moments of happiness but ultimately he is sad uh so here's a film by coronet about bionics [Music] it's a whole science the study of life systems in order to design artificial systems that copy them life systems have solved some very sophisticated technical problems for example for a long time we envied the flight of birds eventually we were able to make a few gadgets that could stay in the air for a while and after a long study of the gliding ability of birds we were able to understand some of the principles of aerodynamics and finally construct our own birds that's bionics part biology part engineering a more recent example was the invention of the analog computer a feat made possible by a careful study of how the human brain operates another example think of a barking dog chasing an unfortunate cat the excitement and activity makes the dog's heart beat faster the heartbeat is regulated by a natural pacemaker a highly modified portion of the cardiac muscle it tells every part of the heart when to beat and how fast if necessary this can be replaced by an artificial pacemaker a mechanical gadget implanted in the body to provide a constant heartbeat but there is one problem when the body is exerted the heart has to beat faster in other words our artificial pacemaker has to be able to change its beat if it can't the heart gets overworked and stops by combining our knowledge of biology with our expertise in engineering we now have artificial pacemakers which can speed up and slow down so the heart can function almost as well as normal today we're able to replace a dazzling number of parts in the human body with bionic parts and we're doing this by studying life systems one we're studying is the porpoise somehow wounds on porpoises heal without leaving any scars [Music] by studying how nature does it we hope to someday perform surgery and heal the human body without leaving any scars at all it is a curious fact that some lizards can grow new tails we hope to duplicate that natural ability so that people who lose arms or legs will be able to grow new ones the study of bionics has revealed a fundamental and very useful difference in the needs of living things and artificial mechanisms all living things need our environment to survive air water food on the other hand manufactured objects don't fare well in the environment they rust and break down if a living thing be it a plant or an animal is isolated from its environment it dies on the contrary artificial mechanisms aren't limited to our environment they can be designed to work in a vacuum this fact has enormous implications for our future in space [Applause] in space which is a vacuum we are like fish out of water our machines though are right at home it's no accident that the first landing on the moon was not by a person but by a machine surveyor one the first landing on mars was by a stationary robot viking one if you can't beat the machine join it this is a projected creature of the future the bionic person half human half artificial parts a human machine at home in space [Music] this is a clock and this is an egg a fertilized chicken egg the clock runs the egg lives the clock is a mechanism the egg is an organism a living thing the clock is made of a hundred and six parts the egg is just one cell yet no one has ever made anything as complex as a cell from the plan we can make the clock but try as we may we cannot make the egg yet we can put together a clock in 21 minutes because we have the plan the egg can put together a chicken in 21 days but we don't know that plant all it takes is the plan it's a problem of bionics the plan for the clock exists in the minds of humans the plan for the chicken exists in the mind of nature this kind of thinking has convinced some biologists and engineers that some of the same principles we use to put together mechanical devices can be applied to life itself to learn nature's plan and duplicate it to create life however a chick is created and grows automatically from a hen and a rooster it's an entirely different problem [Music] when a rich american bought a castle in england he numbered each brick and put the order on a blueprint then he took the castle completely apart and moved the whole rock pile to the united states there using his blueprint he recreated the castle brick by brick the castle ghost had to get there by himself [Music] if the castle had been a living thing though the american would have needed only one brick because the plans for the whole castle would be in every brick across the atlantic in america the brick would automatically reproduce itself and give the castle plans to every new brick the castle would grow out of the instructions even the ghost would be in the plan [Music] for years we've known that the instructions for living things are contained in genes what we didn't know is how the genes are made now we do the plant is contained in a giant molecule called dna the arrangement of elements in this molecule determines what the living thing will be already we've made artificial genes for two organisms a bacterium and the rabbit and we're trying to make human genes [Music] until the present nature has controlled evolution one day an animal came who may change all of that [Music] the thinker the one who doesn't like things the way they are [Music] the magnificent tamer of fire who's afraid of the dark in the past we could only tame nature soon we'll be able to change nature to artificially change the genetic blueprint of any human to create the exact kind of people we want [Music] to direct our own evolution but what kind of people do we want it will be an awesome power all over the world are scientists who fear what we may do with this new knowledge and they'd like to limit further research [Music] others though think we'll muddle through just as we always have the writer george bernard shaw was once asked by a beautiful woman why don't we get married what marvelous children we'd have with your brains and my beauty that would be fine he replied but what if they inherit my beauty and your brains [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] that soundtrack was awesome i really dug it um the uh you know the ethical implications of what's being discussed it's more about ethics and less about the um you know the actual technology but uh it certainly comes up now that those those issues never go away really so it's kind of fascinating uh so today uh the next thing i'm going to show is going to be kind of an experiment um so i've mentioned in the past that i digitized over 600 video tapes from nasa and as part of that there was a lot of uh stuff it was mostly educational stuff or stuff that was edited into educational programming because that's where i got the majority of the stuff was from the john glenn space center and from the langley space center in virginia and they did a lot of educational stuff um but there's also some interesting raw footage and this is footage that that was recorded and then was made available for press releases and for you know documentation etc and so um i'm gonna show this this is kind of a little longish and the reason why is because i have a um a setup i i have to talk to a doctor um nothing serious is just an annual check-in um and i don't know how long it's gonna take so we're gonna watch this kind of rom footage and what's great is some of it most of it won't be narrated and won't be edited it'll just be raw stuff so um here it is this is a space shuttle uh 49 raw mission footage so there's a lot of eva activity which is extra extraordinary vehicular activity which is people space walking so enjoy this and then when i'm done with my meeting i'll come back booster joints are being [Applause] deactivated t-minus 40 seconds and counting t-minus 31 seconds endeavors 4 redundant computers have primary control of critical vehicle functions for the remainder of the count t-minus 20 seconds [Applause] t minus 15. t minus 10. we have a go for engine start six five four three two one booster ignition and liftoff of the maiden voyage of endeavour on a satellite rescue mission [Music] houston now controlling role maneuver complete endeavors in a heads down position on course for a 28.35 degree orbit endeavour's engine is throttling down now as the orbiter passes through the area of maximum dynamic pressure on the vehicle in the lower atmosphere endeavors now one nautical mile from the launch site [Music] engines now beginning to throttle back [Music] up go ahead throttle up endeavor roger houston go traveler one minute 15 seconds all three engines now back at 104 percent three good hydraulic systems and electrical systems aboard endeavour vehicles now traveling two thousand feet per second or about thirteen hundred miles per hour altitude sixty four thousand feet downrange from the launch site eight nautical miles really good standing by for burnout and separation of the solid rocket boosters aboard endeavour srb separation confirm time two minutes twenty seconds in order to understand some of the so the complexities and the general concepts involved in rendezvous design that would be useful to understand some of the basic fundamentals of orbital mechanics for instance an orbit is defined by its perigee and its apogee the point that is closest to the earth is perigee the point that's farthest from the earth is apogee due to the pull of earth's gravity an object tends to orbit faster at perigee and likewise slower at apogee orbital inclination is defined as the angle between the earth's equator and the direction of travel in orbit endeavors inclination is 28.35 degrees orbital period is the time it takes an orbiting body to travel one time around the earth it's also affected by altitude at a typical shuttle altitude of 160 nautical miles it takes about 90 minutes to make one orbit by comparison at 3443 nautical miles it takes about four hours to make one orbit so as altitude increases orbital period also increases the direction of travel in orbit is known as the velocity vector commonly referred to as the v bar the radius of an orbit relative to the orbiting body is called the r bar a change in velocity along the v bar is known as delta v whereas delta is equivalent to change a positive grade change or a positive change in velocity at point a will have the effect of accelerating an object to a higher altitude and by the time it reaches point b 180 degrees from the burn point this is known as a positive grade maneuver although the maneuver was initiated by acceleration the object will return to its original burn point a bit later than before because as altitude was increased orbital period was also increased a retrograde maneuver has the opposite effect by slowing the orbiting object down it loses altitude but as altitude is decreased orbital period also decreases so the rendezvous rule of thumb is speed up to slow down and slow down to catch up well the majority of the burns that the intelsat will be conducting over the next few days are retrograde maneuvers maneuvers to slow it down to lower altitudes and the orbiter to a posigrade maneuvers the first maneuver of the rendezvous sequence was this morning after achieving orbit at 183 nautical miles in olmsburn was conducted to raise endeavour's perigee to 137 nautical miles which set up the initial rendezvous phasing angle and standards for maneuvers to follow the nc-1 burn which was just accomplished was designed as an acceleration maneuver at apogee in order to raise the perigee and slow endeavors closing rate this phase adjustment as it's called was intended to refine the projected horizontal distance between the two spacecraft projected at the start of the capture phase the nh1 burn which is scheduled for 3 45 pm central time tomorrow is another shuttle acceleration maneuver this time at perigee to raise apogee while it also affects the closing rate the primary intent here is to decrease the projected vertical distance or altitude differential between the two spacecraft at the start of the capture phase late on flight day two another shuttle phase adjustment will be calculated by flight controllers as with all phase adjustments this maneuver will occur at apogee in order to affect perigee adjust the closing rate and correct any divergence from the target distance projected for the start of the final phase on flight day three endeavor will circularize its orbit the shuttle crew fires their reaction control thrusters to circularize the orbit at the control box origin this will be the last in plane maneuver prior to control box start time the final phase of rendezvous begins at ti or terminal phase initiation when commander dan brandistein after burning at apogee on orbit prior will fly manually around the intelsat to set up the proper eva access angles below the intelsat prior to eva crew going to capture the intelsat satellite [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] break in position the underside of the spacecraft [Applause] okay i'm moving the satellite back a little bit match okay it was two pulses let me take them out a little bit later because you were [Applause] mounted to the capture bar is a grapple fixture that bruce melnick will later use to uh grapple the satellite after pierre has installed the capture bar [Applause] okay [Applause] is yeah i'm gonna bring the ball around okay you can bring the ball around now we'll take it slow now badge okay let's hold right there let me get up there okay i'm gonna hold right here look good i'm going to payload uh that looks pretty good um i need lost thumb to the right okay come in yell me to the right watch your right end of the capture bar on the arm okay i'm starting to push you in so y'all be right please all right yeah keep going keep going i don't see any uh [Applause] that's far enough okay that's good okay six inches that's six i'm driving in hold there hold there okay holding look at my bearings okay we just passed the spot hop the whistle comes around again let's hold here okay it looks to me like you're a little are you straight centered you think i need to go right a little bit okay that's what it looks like to me coming right [Applause] good clearance that's good [Applause] okay we got he's like you need to come down come to me i'm bringing you down [Applause] okay we got about 150 degrees to go roger bringing it down some more [Applause] now some more looks like the satellite is tending that way a little bit right [Applause] that's pretty good hold there left a little i'm gonna laugh that's a little more okay hold that holding yeah i got started we got about 90 to go let's see if i can get it in there okay should be no problem lots of clues from here okay there's my target off restaurants are clear in a little bit bruce coming in [Applause] hang on okay have to catch you next time back out back up back up okay you're clear bruce if you can get it on get everything filled down here again okay houston for your input what we're doing is uh trying to tighten the wobble with the uh approach graduate copy okay which way you need them to go you know do you want it i mean the satellite is behind me right now towards the tail for me [Applause] [Applause] but we're still cooking dudes getting straight i need to go on my back though i'm straightening the joints up here [Applause] yeah it does how long the sunrise one minute where is it going to be behind you right now [Applause] cool [Applause] there's dan bringing forwards yes [Applause] actually if we can get it further over the payload bay dan stood off that side that's the worst side you know what i think i'm going to do is i'm going to put the bar and clear the thrusters put it on stop it then i'll reposition the bar [Applause] rakib has successfully reinstalled a camera in the forward bulkhead that allows for a wide angle color views that would work [Applause] pierre continues with his uh testing of the handling characteristics of the capture bar that he will use to go out and capture the intelsat spacecraft with with your knees your knees and body lean back a little bit efficiently to clear the lamps take it out with we'll take that out with body and then the last push will be just with your arms [Applause] okay i think i'm ready to go up okay can you take a look at my this is probably a good starting position and let me get to see if you can get a picture of the pitch of my foot restraint relative to satellite or how this fighter would be okay i think i've got a pretty good visualization of that here if you don't have to help me with pitch i'd like to be able to tell pitch that well right well i'm looking at you that's where i'm going to start looking at a brick yep and i'm going to get about here so i'll stop with the legs go with the [Applause] arms you give it a point back close and it starts to go a little wildly pull back and we'll start over [Applause] okay rick preparing the perigee kick motor or the booster motor that will be attached to the innocent spacecraft in the aft portion of the payload bay as pierre through it awaits the arrival of endeavour at the close proximity operations of the satellite [Applause] we're about twenty three and a half minutes away from the point at which endeavor crosses the terminator or begins to pass from darkness into daylight that's a point at when at which the final sequence of maneuvers will be made by dan brandenstein and bruce melnick moving the arm to get pierre into the proper position to attach the capture bar [Applause] all right okay anything right now either [Applause] [Applause] nada [Applause] [Applause] anything now i got the button [Applause] one more time that's it no thank god forget it [Applause] [Applause] clear okay here we go okay do that before we start moving endeavor now sufficiently into the sunrise portion of this pass to begin maneuvering pierre in for the final uh capture phase of the intelsat spacecraft a little bit anyway real slow [Applause] no no i'm not going there until the last [Applause] but silly don't let me forget bruce melnick now maneuvering the robot arm to put pierre into the proper proper position underneath the satellite 18 i made that camera last minute [Applause] that lined up pretty good didn't we oh that discussion [Applause] give me an idea how far the end effector is i'd say about two feet okay and you're talking dead that's right that's the only dimension i'm going to ask you for when i say some different thing and the tpt armor is probably the limiting factor okay excellent spotlight let me alright with that camera yeah i can't take a whole lot of stuff in my face there [Applause] please [Applause] hey pierre how does your attitude look good except for pitch [Applause] that looks pretty good the world doesn't matter actually i might need you all left a little bit i can't tell you yeah i think you do i agree yeah i think we're coming down and going after a little bit i started bringing the ball around okay coming up that's pretty good i think it's drifting forward man it's what i call nasa porn um just that kind of raw footage i used to watch uh nasa tv back when i had a satellite dish um and just sit and sip coffee and watch the earth rotate as uh astronauts were working you know unhooking something hooking something up you know doing general work uh you know it's almost like um you know assembly line footage and that you're watching just this raw feed of somebody working doing something um so big fan of that uh so uh apologize for letting it run a little longer but um i was talking with my wife's doctor and uh everything's fine you know it's just an annual check-in uh so what do we got here so much stuff um speaking of work work situations uh here's a film about uh a problem a scale oh no direct objection to the pay but you know what i've always said we should pay more well that way we'd get plenty of help better help and if they don't work out fire them well that sounds pretty drastic actually the records show that there are other things besides salary which count maybe it's just as well she left she was never interested or very accurate in this job from the time that she arrived and we gave her every chance i went out of my way to be friendly and helpful hi there hello you're the new girl aren't you now let's see your name is pamela of course and i'm not exactly new anymore mr wiley i've been here five weeks you have well time flies doesn't it how do you like the job pam oh it's fine i guess it does seem rather routine at times well you just stick with it pam i know filings not much of a job but later on you'll get to do more important work i'd like to talk to you a about my future here mr wiley some of the other girls were saying that you well what i mean is uh i've learned this filing job very well now and i wondered if i couldn't begin to learn something hey what's that first name filing i saw one of them out of out of order yesterday we file by last name then by both initials on a common name like smith or jones that's duplicated that's very important it's one of the first things you should have learned i know how we file mr wiley well i just threw these records down in rough name order it saves time in the actual filing well just be sure your rough sorting doesn't get you all mixed up and you file them wrong yes mr wiley i'll be careful good girl now as to your future you just keep doing a good job filing you'll be ready for the next job when it comes along and as to what the other girls tell you the more you think for yourself around here the better off you'll be you'll get your promotion faster if you don't listen to other people i'll remember that mr wiley good morning catherine good morning morning nancy hi catherine i'd like you to do something for me yes you know that new girl jan adams dan adams oh you mean pam adams out in filing yeah pam adams uh what i want you to do is to keep an eye on her work you know accuracy make sure she's doing her job right now don't make it obvious that you're checking just ask her how she's doing and look at her files whenever you get a chance well all right mr wiley but i thought she was doing just fine i trained her myself oh i don't blame you training just goes so far but i'm not sure she's doing as well as she might nothing serious but i want to be sure okay mr wiley oh that reminds me those special memos on materials you gave me this morning should i put them ahead of my regular assignment did i say to well no but they look important you're going to send them to mr mayor for study aren't you yes but look just get the data specified and get those memos back to me as soon as you can but you want them today or tomorrow today of course well if i'd have wanted them tomorrow i'd give them to you tomorrow oh mr wiley yes i know you're busy now but i just wanted to talk to you a few seconds about an idea i have that might save the company some paperwork good idea why don't you just drop it in the suggestion box well before i did i wanted to find out what you thought of it well i'm busy now but i've always got time for good suggestions well i had planned to make up a draft of the form before i talk to you but roughly it's an idea to combine the warehouse report and the production report on one form well it's mostly the same information anyway by redesigning no we dropped the warehouse record form a couple of years ago it didn't work we had to start using it again but i didn't mean to drop the warehouse record just combine it with a production report i'm so sure it would work i'd bet on it like you bet me on that other idea of yours numbering the memo forms wasn't it what a mess that was remember now don't get me wrong catherine i do want to hear any ideas you might have the next one might be great and next time i better leave it to the experts i'm sorry i wasted your time mr wiley i'll go see what i can do about pam [Applause] adams well how's the new assignment nancy oh just fine mr wiley these reports are a lot more fun than filing good i'm awfully glad you gave them to me even if i'm not so good at typing them well do try to improve the typing those reports go to management yeah i know [Music] how's filing coming along pan if you have any questions about the system i'm available well i thought i was doing fine just as you suggested then this morning mr wiley threw a fit when he saw i was rough sorting the cards well i guess he was scared i was going to file them that way oh for goodness sake just forget it after a couple more months maybe he'll stop checking up on your work well i'm not sure i can wait that long so will you see what you can do can uh get me a girl who'll not be wanting to change the job she was hired to do who'll do what she's told to do and stay put okay yes i know about the high turnover rate in my division but that's not my fault i've always said we should pay more then we'd get girls who are willing to stay that would stop the turnover you don't agree all right what do you suggest a three-day [Music] week oh dave micromanager just let the girls do their work um so that uh it's funny uh well it's not funny but calvin films uh made this and they also made those other management films the alcoa ones and this one seemed like it was an extended version of that and it was later um it wasn't in the 50s actually probably in the early 60s um but you know the the outlies the same but it's interesting calvin has um repeatedly raised the hackles of people that watch it when they talk about women that are working in the offices or women working at all being called girls every single time in fact one of the films i got uh had a note on it said you know caution uh terminology is offensive to some students and i was like what is this this is a film called abc film direction and i watched it and they talk about girls again and i was like well that must be what it is um so yeah that's that's a hard one and i think maybe it's from the idea that women would work until they got married and had kids and so they were girls until they had kids i i really don't know and i'm not apologizing for it because it raises my shackles too thanks everybody for tuning in today uh sorry but kind of not sorry that i showed the nasa footage because i love that footage i love raw nasa footage and what's interesting is a couple things one it uses what's called the nasa worm logo uh and i always thought they should call it the spaghetti logo because it looks like little uh things of spaghetti and tomato sauce because the original the big blue one uh is called the meatball so why not call it spaghetti and meatballs it kind of makes sense um but uh uh i love that footage and as i said i would sit and watch nasa footage uh all day long uh what's interesting is i did do uh one of the astronauts was bruce melnick and i did digitize his personal stuff including all these photos that were taken like big rolls of uh 35 millimeter that we're taking with i guess hasselblad cameras i'm not absolutely sure what what the type of camera was but there's a lot of goofing off on those uh on those reels of film or on those those frames of film and specifically something that i guess is a thing is people doing an eva they're out in their spacesuit and they look in through the port up through a port window and kind of wave because there were every single astronaut that did an eva that was footage of that of them kind of looking in and that's the type of thing i love this to see is like what is the astronaut lore what are the things that astronauts do that you don't normally talk about um you know the fact that when i went to langley space center there's a bar supposedly there's a there's a bar for the staff on site i never got to get to it maybe one day um little things like that just really fascinated me so uh thanks for indulging me that bit and because basically i was on another call um so we'll be back tomorrow tomorrow's gonna be crazy i'm doing three shows so the first one's gonna be a normal lunchtime show then i'll do something with hunt library and we'll do films about animals and how helpful they are to man uh and then we will in the evening show gamera the invincible via zoom and i'll have i haven't got the zoom link yet
