so m [Applause] [Applause] so [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] by [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] m foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] faster continue [Music] skill bonjour um hi i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show where we just watched a french lesson um made by the folks at encyclopedia britannica uh where they put the characters in some sort of situation and then they all talk about what situation they're in and that's a way that you can learn french vocabulary um our my french class in high school did not have this that we just had ellen z the textbook and we had cassettes that we would listen to but really i think if we had film it would have added this other dimension maybe i don't know i don't know it's hard to say what i would have responded to back in the day probably if it was a computer program i was so excited about computers back then anyhow uh i'm excited about 16 millimeter film now and that's what we are watching uh films from the 80 geeks collection where we have over 30 000 films this next film is kind of interesting i have not uh compared it with the uh there's a this the title of this film is god's wonder and a meadow and there's another film called wonders in a meadow and i have not compared the two to see if it's the same content with just different narration one film is by uh churchill wexler and this one is by churchcraft so [Music] i have to look and see anyway here is god's wonder in a minute [Music] have you ever gone exploring in a meadow you can find many scenes there let's go with this boy and girl and see what different plants and animals we can find we will have to walk slowly or we will miss many of the wonders god has placed in the meadow [Music] there's a baby rabbit he saw us coming and is trying to hide from us in the grass is he watching us he lies very still he doesn't want us to see him the rabbit is resting now but he can run very fast god has given him strong legs for running and jumping [Music] he wiggles his nose as he smells the air this helps him to know who is nearby with his long ears it is easy for the rabbit to hear us walking through the grass isn't it wonderful how god helps the rabbit to protect himself in the meadow there are many kinds of grasses each kind of grass has its own seed [Music] look who is that fellow resting in the grass we call him a grasshopper it is not easy for us to see him his color is so much like the grass and plants around him here is another grasshopper can you see his long legs he uses them to hop around grasses are not the only plants that grow in the meadow all around us there are many surprises here is a tiny flower almost hidden by the tall grass [Music] see how pretty it is [Music] over there are some daisies they are much larger than the tiny buttercup we just saw a beautiful butterfly is visiting this daisy he likes to drink the sweet juices from the flower [Music] on another plant is a different kind of butterfly beautiful flowers and butterflies are some of god's many wonders in the meadow bees like to visit flowers too they gather their food from the blossoms and make honey from the sweet juices of the flowers [Music] this bee has found some golden yellow dandelions he is working hard to find his food we see so many dandelions so often that we forget how pretty they are as we walk across the meadow we see many small white fluffy balls let's pick one for a closer look this fluffy white ball is a dandelion blossom gone to seed when the wind blows the little seeds sail across the meadow that's how dandelion seeds are spread look how easily the seeds blow away [Music] what's that over there something is moving in the grass it's a baby groundhog he has left his den in the ground to take a walk in the meadow always hungry the baby groundhog is looking for something to eat there he has found some clover he likes clover best of all he has short stubby legs with strong feet and sharp claws he uses these to dig his house in the ground his ears are small much smaller than the rabbits the shape of his head and body make it easy for the groundhog to move around in his underground home what's this now there are two baby groundhogs it's more fun to have someone to play with look there see that now where did he go there he is hopping in and out of his tunnel in the ground we call him a ground squirrel because he likes to live in the ground rather than in a tree in the summertime the ground squirrel is always looking for food he sleeps in his den all winter he has no bushy tail like other squirrels who live in trees but he has the same kind of front feet to help him eat he has a beautiful coat with 13 stripes down his back his eyes are big but his ears are small the ground squirrel is one of the funniest fellows in the meadow [Music] let's stop for a little rest we can still keep on exploring while we sit on the ground here is something right here it's an ant hill many ants live here together under the ground see the pile of dirt around their door it was carried up by the tiny ants as they made their underground house ants work very hard some bring in food some work as tunnel builders to make more tunnels others stay at home to take care of the house isn't it wonderful how god has helped the ants to know how to do these things let's look at a tiny ant close up ants and their homes are among the many wonders we find in the meadow let's keep on looking and see what else we can find here is something different they are tumble bugs see the big ball the two little bugs are rolling [Music] bugs lay their eggs inside these balls and then bury them in the soft ground [Music] is push and pull pull and push over and over again isn't it wonderful how two small bugs can roll such a big ball it's hard work for them but they keep on tumbling the ball hey wait for me [Music] how's this for a spot to bury our ball look there's a turtle crawling along in the grass this turtle is a land turtle he spends most of his time on land but he can swim if he has to see how easily the shell opens and closes let's put him back down and watch him god has given the turtle a hard shell on top and below to keep him safe from danger the turtle has short strong feet to help him carry a shell house right with him when he thinks there is danger the turtle pulls his head into his pretty shell he keeps the door open a bit to see what is going on when he thinks all is safe the turtle sticks his head out for a good look around when all is clear he begins to crawl away slowly but surely the next time you go walking in a minute see how many of god's wonders you can find and then remember that god loves you and cares for you even more than he does for these his wonders in the meadow [Music] all right so um that narrator sounds very familiar and some people identified at least other work that he had done and um in particular uh he did one of my favorite films narrated one of my favorite films which i'm going to show you i've shown it before back in july but i gotta show it again uh and you can see the comparison now this is made by um churchill wexler films and features um our hero the working class hero squeak the squirrel [Music] look on that stump is it a chipmunk it looks like a chipmunk all right but it's really a squirrel a golden mantled ground squirrel we call him that because of the golden fur around his neck and head his name is squeak squeak the squirrel when a squirrel whistles others stop and listen what do you think the whistles mean all day long squeak looks for seeds and nuts he eats some food where he finds it and some he carries away to his nest in the ground a squirrel doesn't like others around when he's eating it he growls and chases them away let's see what squeak does when he meets a squirrel that he's never seen before we'll fool him with a mirror well he thinks that squirrel in the mirror will run away but he just sits in nibbles too say what kind of a squirrel is this anyway hmm looks like a squirrel but he doesn't smell right does he squeak and he certainly doesn't feel right well a squirrel like that's a waste of time and squeak has work to do if you hold very still a squirrel will come up and eat out of your hand watch how he shoves the nuts into pouches in his cheeks look at his long whiskers do you think they would tickle your hand being good to a squirrel makes him more friendly now squeak isn't afraid at all he goes right after that food if you tie the nut to a string he grabs it the more you pull the harder he pulls see how he bites off the shell to get at the nut he knows how to get what he wants a squirrel is a smart little animal don't you think so and when peanuts are hidden in a box squeak will poke his head in to get them he shoves as many nuts as possible into his pouches see how his cheeks bulge and still he keeps getting more his cheeks are so fat he can't get his head into the smaller box have you ever seen anyone work so hard to get what he wants now let's try something new we found out that a squirrel will work for food that he can use his paws to reach and pull and that he can learn simple things like finding peanuts in a box but can he learn something he hasn't tried before let's see how smart a squirrel really is here's a glass tube we'll put some peanuts in one end of the tube squeak has been watching us do you think he can get the nuts he goes right to the tube and uses his tongue to reach them he sees that the best way to get the nuts is from the open end of the tube but now his tongue isn't long enough to reach those that are left so he sniffs and licks and scratches he tries to push his face into the tube but still he can't get the peanuts that he can see shall we help him all right let's tie a string to the nut do you think squeak can learn to pull the string there he sees where the nut is but he can't get it perhaps at the other end of the tube no that didn't work he moves his nose back and forth under the nut he even touches the string but leaves without pulling it let's push the nut in a little farther and try again he's beginning to get curious about that string see him sniff at it watch now he pulled the string was it luck well we'll let him take the nut to his nest and then try it again this time he faces the tube and pulls the string with his teeth and paws here's something that will show you just how well squeak can learn a lesson we'll push the peanut far into the tube with a stick watch how squeak acts after he's practiced many many times he goes right to the string and pulls hand over hand he certainly learned that lesson well didn't he here's another test we'll put a peanut on one end of the string and the stick on the other we'll hang the two ends through a wire screen this time squeak has to do more than pull the string he has to pull the right end will he find the end with the nut hmm there must be something to eat around here someplace let's put another peanut on the string wrong again he tries so hard that he makes the same mistake over and over and then he turns to the right end of the string again let's change the peanut and the stick around will that mix him up no he's learned to pull the right end almost without looking how do you think he does it the more lessons he learns the more he gets to eat isn't sqweek getting to be a fat little squirrel now for another new problem we'll tie the peanut on the string and hang it so it's out of reach this time the string is out of reach too what do you think he'll do now at first when he sees the peanut he reaches for it he sniffs around and stretches for the nut again he even holds onto the rod with one paw while he reaches now squeak sees the string but he catches his tail on it and is frightened away we'll try again now watch him use one paw and his nose to pull the string he learned how to work the problem in just two tries here's a different test we'll hang the peanut out of the squirrel's reach a string is tied to a box that can be pulled can you figure out what squeak should do to get the nut there he got another nut to put away in his nest let's try this again see how he runs back and forth and looks over the problem he's learned that he can use a string to help him get something he wants he didn't know how to use a string when he was living out in the woods did he does it surprise you to find out how much an animal can learn oh that time he pulled the box so that it isn't quite under the nut [Music] there he did it there will never be a shortage of nuts for a hard-working smart little squirrel like squeak [Music] oh man squeak is so great makes me so happy um and you you know that same narrator asked the same types of questions of about the dung beetles and the ants and uh so it's the same guy i i think chur church craft films was a brand an alternate brand name for churchill wexler um because they did a other series of wonders and i was looking to see if i did indeed have wonders in a country meadow and i don't but i do have wonders in a country stream wonders in your backyard all of them are churchill films so i don't think they actually i misspoke i don't think they actually made a wonders in country meadow so i could do a comparison contrast between um the non-religious version and the religious version but i i have a feeling it's the same guys who shot it and did it um i'm pretty excited i just got a big batch of films from uh actually i got a couple of films from one of our viewers rebecca thank you rebecca uh one of them i hope to show tomorrow if you are around um it looks like it's a lulu um and then i got a bunch of more films from uh roof tracks of films that they weren't interested in using for their um show and uh this is one of them i've got lined up here i should also say thank you juliet for the coffee julia went to this website that i'm pointing to buy me a coffee dot com slash av geeks and she bought me a couple of coffees i very much appreciate that that is one way to keep um me alive to keep me motivated and interested um in spite of the pollen that's floating around outside coffee is caffeine is a wonderful horrible drug that uh my uh body is now running off of uh so anyways um as i said i got a film and i've shown other films in this series and this is uh pretty great because the quality of the film is pretty good a lot of the other films i have in this series are kind of beat up but this is the flynn flam man and i like that it uses the trope uh of um the drug dealer so here we go flim flam man you want to eat over my house tonight sure but i gotta call my mom first we'll call for my place i got some new records we can do a homework and huh and kids come here it's that guy over there in the doorway i wonder who he is come here kids i wanna talk to you what do you want i got something special for you might get sick or something oh mulligan what could happen it's just no good that's all [Music] i'm maggie [Music] quick diets and bad diets don't give you the essential nutrients your body needs to live and grow you need a variety of foods from all of the four food groups to live and grow you need food for the milk group to live and grow you need foods from the fruits and vegetable group to live and grow you need food from the meat group to live and grow you need foods from the bread and cereals group to live and grow you need foods from the milk group meat group fruits and vegetable groups the bread and cereal group that's called a balanced diet quick diets leaving out important foods from your diet is no good it'll only affect your health you have to eat right to do right and feel right right on [Music] is [Music] like everybody knows build a strong body [Music] is [Music] because everybody knows [Music] [Music] is [Music] everybody [Music] [Music] mrs walton just what does it mean when you hear about additives in your food well molecular additives are simply chemicals that either come from nature or made in a laboratory as we're in today and they do all kinds of things that are basically either nutritious or they extend shelf life or they make foods more attractive but just remember mulligan that they have been tested by both industry and government and they're there for a purpose so additives are important vitamin fortified foods are good for you like milk fortified with vitamin d and vitamin e rich bread one reason foods are enriched is to put back the nutrients lost during processing oh i don't think i understand that for example when flour is processed some of the vitamins are lost so before baking bread some of the vitamins are put back into the flour this is called enrichment you're putting me on no it's true honest i swear it ask my mother if you want to it's true vitamins are essential nutrients minerals are essential nutrients like iron calcium and iodine you get iron from meats like liver you get calcium from milk and cheese you get iodide from seafood and it's in our diet salt protein is an essential nutrient you get protein from meat fish chicken eggs peas beans and nuts carbohydrates and fats are essential nutrients you get carbohydrates from bread cereal spaghetti macaroni and noodles [Applause] hey listen to this diet all i have to do is eat grapefruits and eggs for two months then i'll eat is mangoes and nuts hey mike let me see this look sure manny there are a lot of quick diets in here for us you can uh lose weight gain it put on inches take them off grow hair be beautiful all in three days yeah i'd like to see that too sure me too i like to go around here longer than it is now and you don't have to worry about eating or even when wait a minute you guys will get sick or something oh mulligan stop being such a spoiled sport yeah there's nothing wrong with these dyes i miss the latest thing now yeah everybody's doing it gee i sure wish i could get a book of diets and shortcuts to eating like this here's one that you only have to eat rice grain and a few vegetables man that she'll save me a lot of time yeah hey where can we get a couple of those books [Music] someone looking to get a couple of my books me me too it weren't for me no they don't yes we do mugging on your own business yeah mulligan mind your own business because my friends here want to deal with me right kids well sonny boy why don't you run along i said your friends here and i've got a little uh business to transact don't fall for this guy these diets these shortcuts they're not good for you oh mulligan stop being stuprty cats you're too square mulligan yeah we can take care of ourselves yeah mulligan we've made up our minds please don't do it i think uh your friends have made up their minds sonny boy yeah mulligan we've made up our mind i'll get you later now who wants to see my latest book that the amazing diet that slims off inches and purifies your whole system you need four four three two four sermons a day of fruit and vegetables four servings a day of bread and cereal three servings a day of milk two of me four four three two four servings of fruit and vegetables three servings of bread and cereals and two of those that's wrong four servings of friends cereals three servings that's wrong are four servings of fruit vegetables three or four servings of breaded cereals of three servings of milk a day after two servings of meat [Applause] remember uh a balanced diet means eating the right amounts of food from the four food groups your body needs this you can't eat just one good meal and expect to feel better right away you have to eat a balanced diet regularly every day to feel on top of it all the time there's no shortcut to good health and good eating you have to eat a balanced diet each day if you eat the proper amounts of the right foods regularly you needn't take any vitamin pills or extra vitamins at all you'll get it all from the foods you eat really i didn't know that that's right and the only extra vitamin you'll need is some vitamin d which you can pick up in a couple of glasses of vitamin d fortified milk each day vitamin d is an additive in milk that's why some additives are important because they add vitamins minerals and proteins nutrients that we need to stay healthy on some additives help keep food fresh and tasty some additives are to put back vitamins minerals proteins that are taken out when the food was processed some additives are put there just to make the food taste [Music] good fat foods and quick diets are bad for you so don't try it they'll slow you down [Music] there's only one way to keep your body in line there's only one way for feeling fine there's only one way and it's yours [Applause] [Music] they'll slow you down [Music] [Music] [Applause] so [Music] but this is important how is this i'm doing my income tax what could possibly be more important than income tax the [Music] what fear scared to death oh my gosh come on you've got to help me you've got to help me get this guy guy what guy a weird and spooky guy real mysterious and strange evil mean and vicious strange mysterious weird evil being and vicious yes yes no rover no come on you've gotta help me you've gotta help me stop him very well i'll help you mulligan i'll help the kids for mulligan stew after all they they need me a man of caliber they need my help don't they yes they do very well [Music] scoff gloves [Music] briefcase [Music] umbrella [Music] collages [Music] very well then forward much [Music] boy what you gotta put up with these days with adults are essential nutrients like iron calcium and iodine you get iron from meats like liver you get calcium from milk and cheese you get iodine from seafood and it's in iodized salt you need vitamins like vitamin a which is found in uh uh which is found in um [Applause] yellow vegetables green leafy vegetables and fruits right and you need b vitamins which is found in um bread and cereal yes that's also true and and uh and vitamin c is found in uh cigarette fruits vitamin d and vitamin d fortified milk wait a minute wait a minute give me a chance where was i vitamin e greedy vitamin k i knew them i knew them all but you didn't give me a chance protein is an essential nutrient you get protein from meat fish chicken eggs peas beans and nuts and you need carbohydrates and fats [Music] come on wilbur we've gotta get to them before it's too late i'm coming i'm coming can't you go any faster faster faster [Music] what is it [Music] look they're with that guy and he's got it right where he wants them in the empty lot no on a quick diet and they'll probably get real sick too what do we do what do you mean what do we do i think you had a plan by now plan me of course your plan good can you have one no manny how's the rice good real good do you have anything else to eat today no i did just what the book told me rice rice and more rice on the side manny cause soon you're gonna be strong and pure man just keep eating that rice eat that rice man okay man i've been eating eggs and grapefruit just like the book it's a terrific diet i think i think but you want to be skinny like one of those new york models or hollywood stars being skinnies and you know i want to be skinny but it just gets boring eating eggs and grapefruit forget boring just think how beautiful you're gonna be all right see you see he's got him eating those crazy diets already he's terrible just terrible mickey how's your fish and pills oh just fine but i'm getting tired of eating fish all the time and these so sure cost a lot of money but did just what your book says so vitamin a vitamin c vitamin e protein capsules yeast minerals mickey don't sweat it just think pretty soon you're going to be the healthiest kid on the block golly do you think so i think so i know so mickey lies lies he's telling them all lies i know i know you can't feel good eating like that you can only get sick they used to believe that but he's true oh i could pulverize him and i'm on your diet where all i have to eat is eggs and vitamin pills every day for two months then i go on her fish diet and she goes on my egg diet boy we're gonna look great at a boy mike now you know what i want the rest of you kids to do a different diet no no better than that you want all your friends to be healthy strong and cool like you're gonna be right sure of course we do good i knew you did so i want you to get them to read my latest book all the kids all the kids all over the world so that they can learn they don't need any of this balanced diet nutrition none of that stuff right oh how vile you make them forget everything i taught them about good nutrition but how can we tell he won't get away with it [Music] you villains you fool wait till i put my hands at you you [Music] that's right and i'm here to tell you that all these stories what did you do right by me glasgow wilbur do you think this is too much for you please tell these young people the truth about your selling these ridiculous diets or i shall have to personally handle you myself look wilbur i've been eating these diets for you will you tell them the truth about nutrition and balanced diets or shall i have to foster you me wilbur be careful well before that's funny yes kill your little wilbur gee wolver you're funny well why don't you uh blast off wilbur before i wilbur eyes i challenge i will prove to all of these people the fallacy of your diet my duel will show what happens to people who eat these diets oh well though elizabeth what kind of duel uh mud pies or patty cakes no sir a duel of strength and endurance which only comes from good eating strength endurance yes will you accept my challenge or will you admit to all of these people that your diets are hot air i accept then let the duel begin come on let's see the doom yeah come on wilbur be careful please careful who cares about caution not i for i am on the side of right yes my friend and when you are on the side of right now nothing can go wrong you'll see because of virtue and beauty and all of those words they're important we must never forget them as well as good eating and the 444-332 and all of that because you have to remember that it is more important [Music] so [Music] oh oh come sir another laugh around the block wouldn't hurt you oh you're gonna be crazy i couldn't do another lap i'm exhausted it's awesome of course from all those junky diets in your book that rob you of all of your your good strength and your and your health oh you mean those diets oh i did this to me they sure did didn't they yeah wait a minute wait a minute not all my diets are bad there's one diet you'd really like it it's chopped carrots and carrots no they wouldn't would you no it's a balanced diet for me from now on me too and me and all out for a nice nutritious pizza i sure did [Music] don't fall for these quick diets and fat foods that are going around they're not good for you every time you leave all important foods from your diet you're not getting good nutrition you need to eat a balanced diet to stay healthy you need good nutrition to live and grow nobody can afford not to eat right nobody and don't expect to keep your health in line from eating good only a couple of days you gotta eat right all the time to feel right all the time that means a balanced diet milk group meat group vegetables group bread and cereals and you have to know the formula for eating right too it's called four four three two four servings a day of fruits and vegetables four servings a day of breads and cereals three servings a day of milk or milk products two servings a day from the meat group that's 4.32 that's four four three two one of course that's four four three two four four three two anyone knows that four four three two [Music] no [Music] [Music] tv let's slow you down [Music] there's only one way it'll slow you down [Music] do [Music] [Music] so miss joan crawford aussie davis richard kiley roddy mcdowell mary sullivan starring the new knight gallery i'm rod sterling i would like to invite you to join me for the telling of three stories represented in this gallery by these paintings to be displayed here for the first time each is a collector's item in its own way not because of any special artistic quality but because each captures on a canvas suspends in time and space a frozen moment in a nightmare my abiding concern doctor in my singular preoccupation is myself 11 hours of 12 fewer more it makes no difference i want to see something trees concrete buildings grass airplanes [Music] death is final death is it i think not mr jeremy i think there are things stronger than death and more lasting than the grave reporter i think hate is stronger than death mr jeremy and i think you're beginning to realize that join me for the unveiling at the night gallery [Music] i had to sweeten it up a little bit um i know for some of you uh mulligan stew is somewhat of an endurance contest uh but i was excited to see that one uh in that wilbur is generally the older bald guy is generally just the comic relief he's kind of he is the boss i guess of mulligan stew he make gives him assignments but he's also just a goof um just seems really awkward and it's beginning of that adults as awkward goofy people that shows up in a lot of kids films so um i think that uh showing him as someone who helped save mulligan stew along with mulligan is is fascinating because i always felt like you know wilbur was the one that was kind of clueless mulligan stew was always good and that they were always a team uh because they were in a band and of course during this time there were lots of bands uh of young people that were solving mysteries so you know that's your your um monkeys kind of um you're then there's all those cartoons that were had um the members are in a band like jabber jaw for some reason um kind of a scooby-doo but they're in a band type of feeling anyways i had to sweeten it with some night gallery at the end that promo it's pretty great um ronnie mcdowell so great i just saw him in a uh colombo episode it's wonderful he was also a film collector i should just say he collected a lot of uh 16 and 35 prints of feature films and the fbi actually came down on his collection uh somebody reported him and said that he was you know basically had this material he wasn't supposed to have and so there was a big it was a raid of his house and i think some other collector's house houses of the films that they had and i don't know how it played out i was able to find that in the time period that since i saw him in the ps the promo and when i just did this um but yeah that was something he was a collector that got in trouble and there were a lot of the hollywood actors that were collectors as well and some of them their collections have perpetuated quentin tarantino has a collection that's pretty good and has a lot of genre films that don't exist anywhere else anyhow thanks everybody for tuning in today um i should say that uh flim flam man whether you loved it or hate it hated it was the 1400th film that we showed since um last march so we are going along i mean we certainly have duplicated things i had to show you squeak it just felt like i had to show you and i've mistakenly shown some films in the past a couple of times so but thanks for being there thanks for tuning in thanks for your comments even if they're like oh god this is just going on forever uh i appreciate it nonetheless um this is why i do what i do is i collect films so that i can show them and i appreciate you guys being there and you know i appreciate you when you hit like and subscribe i also appreciate it when you buy us coffee but also just being there and telling people about what we're doing that that means a lot also you can go to avgeeks.com and see other stuff that we've done in the past but i'll be back tomorrow everybody have a good rest your day please rewind and love each other and that is yourself included and we will see you tomorrow everybody take care you
