foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter film and that was uh something that blocked Blackhawk films uh re-released originally it was on 35 millimeter in which a newsreel that was shown in theaters um Blackhawk did some amazing work in finding and re-releasing things on 16 for collectors mostly um so that's pretty pretty cool thing um so Josephus Daniels uh problematic uh in Raleigh problematic in North Carolina um look them up uh yeah he was based in Raleigh and he also uh I think believe he founded the news and observer uh in the maybe early 20th century uh uh and yeah there were some problems I'm not gonna elaborate on him but uh supposedly the trivia about him was that he there was a little like spot that was kind of a commemorative spot for uh World War One Naval uh casualties and it was named the smallest uh naval base in the United States um Daniels Hall was that named after him at NC State I don't know that's a good question but uh the Daniels did do positive stuff but he had he was kind of sketchy early on but I won't say anymore uh so behind me I have a film scanner set up uh with some 16 millimeter films and this is part of a series that my intern found and here we go let's watch some films uh I can tell you right now the title is not right so I'm gonna have to fix that so um this is community helpers and the thing is it deals with a certain time period uh and uh it's about the police and so let's keep the comments to the time period when the film was made and let's not comment on current uh views about the police because that can drum up some uh controversy sadness anger Etc in the comments so we're concentrating on the time period uh that this film was made all right so uh here is community helpers uh police officers [Music] supported vehicular purging and Grant and good reasons careful [Music] here's a site you've probably seen many times a police car speeding past with its lights flashing and its siren wailing haven't you often wondered where the police officer was going in such a hurry [Music] have you sometimes wished you could ride along to find out what it's like to be a police officer well here's your chance I'm officer Stark sorry I can't shake hands right now but as you can see I'm kind of busy I've been a police officer for almost six years now I worked the second shift we sometimes call it watch from four o'clock to midnight no matter what hours you work being a police officer is hard work and sometimes dangerous but I like it one reason is every day is different you never know what's going to happen next here's an example a traffic accident we first find out if anyone is hurt no I'm all right I need your driver's license please hey I was coming down this hill here driver's license please we'll get around to the store here just a minute I'll get the license and get yourself right in the vehicle here okay we gather all the information we can from the people who were driving the cars and from Witnesses I wasn't watching them I was coming down this hill here and I was I was seeing it okay thank you very much we try to find out what caused the accident whose fault it was and whether or not anyone broke the law we always write all the information down that way we have all the facts in case we have to testify in court hey Mr Dart would you like to tell me first what happened please as a police officer it's my job to uphold the law and to protect life and property in the community we spend much of our time helping people in different ways yes I was turning right and he turned left right in front of me into my life okay what color was the life for you man it's green and for you sir green absolutely I had a green light but sure you couldn't change this into a warning no sir I'm sorry is that all you want yes or you're free to go okay ma'am I'm gonna need a joke okay fine in particular handling accidents is just one of many ways police officers help people [Applause] sometimes police are called to give emergency care to people who suddenly become sick such as this heart attack victim police officers have saved many lives by knowing what to do at times like this sometimes we Save a Life by rushing through town to take medicine or blood to someone who's sick or injured [Music] of course police officers help people in a lot of usual ways too we direct traffic so you can get where you're going safely we give directions so people can find their way around an unfamiliar part of town we return little lost children to their parents I believe Sarah belongs to you told me that you got lost from her that's okay she was over there she was worried she was looking for him we provide special police escorts at night we watch over stores and shops making sure doors are locked and no Prowlers are around besides helping people in all these ways police officers also enforced the laws of the community the rules which tell people how to live together in peace and safety some of these laws have to do with the use of cars trucks and other Motor Vehicles police officers write tickets that remind people not to break the parking laws and block traffic using special radar equipment police officers spot speeding cars and stop them before they cause a serious accident good morning sir Matt see your driver's license you were just checked on radar at 43 miles per hour and opposed to 30 mile an hour speed zone 43 yes sir no one likes to pay for a speeding ticket but sometimes people need this reminder to drive safely and obey the traffic laws it may even save someone's life of course we police officers know that most people try to obey the law at all times oh sure they may make a mistake and get a traffic ticket or a parking ticket once in a while but they would never break the law by committing a serious crime such as robbery burglary or murder that bread cost 25 John oh come on I got a traffic ticket it's sad to say there are always a few people who will commit such crimes yeah well if you have any left come back the money in a sec fast okay come on come on you're built though too come on hurry up now face down on the floor don't move for two minutes um [Music] hello I want to report a robbery when someone calls the police to report any kind of trouble an officer gets all the information from the caller did you see any type of vehicle uh I thought I hear said it was in a white van with brown stripes did you get a license number did you get the license number no no he didn't get any license number yeah just having just just a couple minutes ago the dispatcher calls the patrol car nearest the scene of the crime robber hit the market Gregory and Oak calling car 867 suspect vehicles white van with a brown stripe 10-4 sometimes a police helicopter will be sent out to try and locate the criminals from the air [Music] okay could you tell me what happened sir when a serious crime has occurred it's the police officer's job to get all the information which could lead to the criminal's arrest we question the victim and any witnesses to find out exactly what happened we get a description of the criminal okay fine bet how tall do you think uh Miss fella was and we always write everything down so we can make a full report later on other police officers will search for additional evidence such as fingerprints I'm detective standards this is detective Ely and detectives plainclothes policemen who are skilled in investigating crimes we'll try to find other clues that could lead to the criminal's arrest did you happen to see anything which resemble that ah yeah I think when I did there was a there was a white Advantage really went burning around the corner gunman who robbed this store may have gotten away but a lot of police officers will be looking for a brown stripe on it and okay robberies are still on the increase so keep an eye on your open businesses in Stanley we got a pick up on that hold up that occurred yesterday at Gregory and Oak write this down we're looking for a white Ford van with the brown stripe another day and this is how it begins roll call the sergeant makes sure we're all here and then gives us any special instructions soon we're back on the job patrolling our assigned area or beat of course we couldn't do our job without the help of many other people the mechanics who keep our cars and motorcycles in top shape technicians who keep our radios and other communication equipment working properly the scientists who do important work in the police Laboratory and the many clerks and secretaries that handled the paperwork of a police force the investigator must be able to identify the physical evidence have you ever wondered how someone gets to be a police officer well believe me it's not easy it takes several months of hard work and training one of the ways we do this is that we properly Mark the evidence trainees study the laws they will uphold as police officers means of marking evidence they learn about first aid you know when you title tied off on on the sides breathe for a quick breaths and other ways of saving lives by the victim's mouth to feel and listen for air you want to search trainees also learn how to deal with troublemakers take your right hand put it in the middle of the subject's back that way if he does move you can feel it the block will be done in the same manner and how to defend themselves and others from Attack stopping that is stance and of course every police officer must know how to use his or her revolver four basic fundamentals must be present to shoot a well-aimed well-placed shot thank you although they rarely if ever have to fire their guns in the line of duty police officers know they must be ready just in case that's why all police officers practice from time to time officer Stephen L young the new graduates of the police academy or training school are called rookies at last they're police officers cops entrant officers by the way the nickname cop comes from the Copper Star some policeman War many years ago well that gives you some idea about how you get where I am today and what being a police officer is all about I could tell you more but right now that van could be the one used in yesterday's armed robbery I better check it out thanks for riding with me [Music] um yeah that narrator is totally Jim Stringer um who worked for Centron he wrote music for Centron he also appeared in Centron and I have this film I've shown this I think I showed this uh in November of last year but it's so good that I kind of feel like I have to show it again um here is uh caught in a rip-off featuring Jim Stringer foreign because we're already late okay no sounds and I think I am gonna get some okay well come on okay no anybody here oh just a minute Domino cam I can't see anybody I'm not gonna give you a lot I mean if you want a sermon catch Billy Graham on the two clipping goes on so what sometimes it's not even planned it just happens and it's as much the store's fault as it is ours I mean if they want you to wait on them it ought to be worth something [Music] or like there's some things that have a certain amount of class and you think you might like to have one and you look and it's like nine prices so either way it's a rip-off either they get you or you get them [Music] I couldn't care less what it'll do to your folks when they find out no chances are they're up to the same thing either on their income taxes or expense accounts that's what I mean by crap I'm not going to give you any of that righteous crap because it's not that big a deal actually there's only one real advantage to a rip-off and that's getting stuff for free can of spray paint measly can of spray paint that's what I got for free well just about that's what I'm getting to those snooper mirrors are really a laugh they're mainly there to psych you out if they can see you then you can see them and act accordingly I'm not so stupid that I don't know what I'm being watched like the funkies on the store payroll you'd really have to be out of it not to consider every customer in the store as a plan or the clerks spying on you is what they get paid for you're certainly not going to find one that will help you find what you want obviously they don't get paid well enough otherwise there wouldn't be so many rip-offs that turn out so well from our standpoint yes sir free enterprise you've got to give the merchant some credit they get together in associations and have lists of the people they think are getting to them or they've developed profiles for how a shoplifter Acts you might be surprised at how well they've got us pegged I'm not going to tell you exactly what it is that it learns them because well I said no crap so no crap I don't know but they do have codes [Music] you never can tell what the code will be it might not always be a call for a checker in a certain checkout stand there might just be a break in the music or a light blinking you never can tell and uh something else I didn't know you can literally see right through the wall or if they don't spot you that way the you've got some other scheme going man there is nothing fair about it [Music] I'm telling you this so that if you're just into it for the game you'll realize how many players there are and you won't sell your opponents short 29 will there be anything else [Music] no they've got you I mean legally don't be expected to know that if you go through the checkout stand and they ask you if there's anything else and you say no then that's concealing with intent to divert to your own use and that's stealing according to them even if it's just a little harmless Penny Andy stuff thank you you bet hair stands up on the back of your neck you get an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach you know they know is I gonna let you get out of the store and then they're gonna NAB you if you let him if you don't play it very cool oh wait I think there was something else I wanted excuse me I'll be with you in just a moment are they waiting to NAB me or aren't they yeah boy you can feel the sweats start popping out I'm not sure [Music] jeez they are under something I've got to get myself together hello and easy just walk back and put it back it's not a rip-off if you haven't got anything on that's what you think how did I get into this hey wait a minute maybe there's a way out can I pay you for this I forgot I had it would you like to come to the office and talk about this uh unpaid merchandise there's nothing to talk about I meant to pay for it no no wait a minute the thing is they won't let you pay and that shows what you're up against once you pass the checkout counter they don't have to wait until you're out of the store when you came in here for it we're here trying to get him over there at the door what's going on I think they caught a shoplifter these car keys you won't get far [Music] foreign [Music] then there's no question a dead giveaway [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] like a nightmare that's happened to somebody else only you know it's you that's you running oh my keys what do I do with my damn keys [Music] look I'm sorry man I I don't know what got into me I've just never done anything like that before come on let's you can be telling the truth and it's like he didn't hear you I'm married though I'm really sorry look you can't believe how many times I've heard that story ever you're not another human being with feelings or somebody's son or daughter that they're proud of or somebody with a great future whatever it is you know that you are you're just the same old story he's heard a million times you can't phase them you can't make them understand that this is important to you this is your future look uh can't we just forget about this I mean I know I made a mistake but I deserve to squirm a little bit but you have to crucify me please why don't you have a seat I'm sorry I had no choice my bosses I have got to put a stop to shoplifting or I'm out of a job unless the percentage of shrinkage goes down and most shrinkages shoplifting I'm not going to be working here any longer no matter how sorry I might feel for the ones who are involved give me the police would you please I'm sure you know the number if I can hang on to my job I'd like to get paid in line with my efforts now my pay is based on whether this place makes any money or not so anybody that takes a dime's worth of stuff off those counters down there is really taking money out of my pocket I know shoplifter never stops to think everybody has to pay higher prices to cover the cost of what he gets away with I've had pretty little teenage girls sitting right there and pillars of the community grandmotherly types and they all say it isn't hurting anybody well it hurts me ready on your call Mr Powers Sergeant Duncan's on the line no no you can't help yourself [Music] it's just torn out of you it's the deepest hurtness feeling you've ever felt [Music] just part fear part disgust with yourself in part maybe what's she called grief grief for who you thought you were you probably won't get a chance to be now like some of you have died and this is the funeral and that's all I'm trying to get across to you what it feels like to be ashamed [Music] there are other humiliations being looked at like you were something rotten having to sweat out a long long wait [Music] a minute [Music] mark I'm a lieutenant Sutton Lawrence Police Department I'd like to ask you some questions but first i'm required to is it true that you're going to have a record to follow you around to have the right but I'm not going to harp on all that crap do you understand each of these rights all I'm trying to get across is what it does to you the way you get hurt when you're caught in the rip-off Mark you are hereby Summers to appear before the Municipal Court eighth day of April at eight o'clock AM to answer a complaint charging you with shoplifting if you fail to appear a warrant will be issued for your arrest the Stringer um our uh protagonist in uh caught in a ripoff who also wrote the music for it uh who also did the voiceover for uh the community helpers police officers and also I like bikes but and probably a lot of other Centron films that we will be unearthing um Jim Stringer also wrote shake hands with Danger uh uh and uh we did a show with him um a live show with him long time ago back in Austin Texas where we did a bunch of the films that he worked on or he appeared in um because he also did the song The Lunatic too which is a amazing uh film about venereal disease that has a great song um and uh so he narrated during it and he said that during caught in a ripoff when they showed the film kind of as a Premiere his daughter was all freaked out to see her dad like running and getting caught and then crying it was it was intense for his daughter so there you go uh let's see so let's go back to uh the film the film scanner we've got another community helpers film uh which is medical I believe it's medical and health workers uh maybe Jim Stringer narrates this I don't know let's find out enjoy one second all right here we go foreign that's pretty loose isn't it yeah a community has many people who fix things a little bit that looked pretty good fire over here foreign foreign [Music] that's pretty loose isn't it yeah a community has many people who fix things when they break or wear out just this a little bit that looked pretty good yeah there are people who fix skateboards there what do you think of that it's good yeah now you check that and see how you like that people who fix cars people who fix roads there are people who take care of houses and plants and animals but who takes care of you when you're sick or hurt your tonsils are okay right doctors and other medical workers take care of you and everyone else in your community good how's everything out on the farm great well school's going to be out pretty soon isn't it you're going to be able to play baseball this year yes good just as a car has many different parts to take care of tires lights windshield wipers the engine your body has many different parts eyes nose mouth heart stomach are a few your body is a very complicated machine many doctors take care of all parts of the body others concentrate on just one part for every part of the body you can think of there's probably a special kind of doctor to take care of it the people in a community need many different kinds of doctors are the kids there are doctors who take care of old people and doctors who take care of children which doctor would you go to how are you doing today fine I understand you got a little sore throat there huh right the children's doctor really and do your ears hurt you at all no do you been running the temperature no no let me take a listen to you but if your children's doctor thought you needed glasses he would send you to an eye doctor which is the clear tissue just in front of the brown part of the eye it's very good okay fine just sit back now please we'll take a look here sit up towards me now and look at my nose now good both eyes this is not going to hurt it's going to harden or if you broke a bone you would go to a bone doctor Chris come on back with me yeah doctors see their patients in an office or in a hospital when people need a lot of special Medical Care their doctor will send them to a hospital since people can get sick or hurt at any time a doctor has to be ready to go to the hospital in the middle of a party in the middle of dinner or even in the middle of the night yeah it says Dr Campbell I'll be right there the people in the community know they can depend on their doctors to help them being a doctor means being able to work with all kinds of people who have many different kinds of problems hello what are you doing better can you tell us where the pain is Christ you're in the middle of my chest but if doctors had to be with all of their sick patients all of the time they would wear out quickly so doctors have lots of help from other medical workers what other kind of medical worker can you think of right a nurse how are you doing nurses are trained to help patients in many different ways you and Europe been up to I've been watching ATV the person who has to be in the hospital knows there is always a nurse nearby who knows how to help them feel better about ready for some lunch good other nurses assist in operations such as taking out a person's tonsils nurses in an operating room hand the tools to the doctor and work with the other members of the surgical team is everything all right with anesthesia fine can I have some water please sure Alice [Music] scissors [Music] some people in a community live alone and need help from medical workers visiting nurses help the community they live in by going into the homes of these people to help them do special exercises give them medicine or even cook a meals for me now point out there we are we couldn't do that last week some communities are so small that they don't have a doctor nearby visiting nurses can be helpful to the people in these communities by helping with small problems and showing them how to stay healthy any infection in the ears and the eyes are okay yeah you're pretty good I'd say so what about you Catherine did you get any of Christina's cold come here let's check your throat okay yeah okay go ah well you look pretty good too I'd say you all are awfully healthy how about if I come back next month and check you over again that'd be great we enjoy your visit a doctor's assistant may also work in communities where the only doctor or hospital is far away a doctor's assistant is trained to take care of all but the most complicated problems and can help people in emergencies the doctor's assistant keeps in touch with a Doctor by telephone Lauren oh I fell off an Implement getting ready for spring if we take a look at it all right you put something allow bandage around it I don't think you'll need to go to the hospital's fine you feeling okay if this doctor's assistant hadn't been working in this community the Man's family would have to drive a long way into the city to see a doctor's feet a day or two I think it'd be very advisable but if you have any problems you call us okay right okay how are you Sharla you have a cut finger come here let me see it oh wow you sure do let's put something on it okay let's see what we got here put the Band-Aid on it then keep it nice and clean they always make it feel better don't they yeah you know it feels better than a Band-Aid oh Mama's kiss why don't you have a kiss I'm gonna be on better oh yeah [Music] when a person is hurt or very sick and needs to go to the hospital as quickly and safely as possible how do you think he or she gets there feel fine you don't hurt anywhere at all just just your leg which leg are we talking about left leg okay where does it hurt they often go in an ambulance ambulance attendants and drivers are trained to help people in emergencies and to get them to a hospital quickly and safely other community helpers such as policemen and firemen also have special training so they can help people in emergencies until an ambulance comes okay Jordan I'm going up front okay looks like you've ended up with a broken leg and there's nothing else the attendants keep in touch with the doctor at the hospital by radio to make sure they're doing the right things to help the patient 82 to lmh on my channel they carry medicine and special equipment to help people MH this is Dwayne Perkins emic an ambulance driver has to know how to drive safely on a busy City Street on a narrow Mountain Road and in all kinds of weather the job of every person driving a car to make way for an ambulance there are other medical workers in hospitals x-ray technicians take pictures or X-rays of people so the doctor can see broken bones or other problems inside the body an x-ray okay they hurt no x-rays don't hurt okay Marty I'm gonna put this underneath your leg now raise it real slow good an x-ray technician knows just how to move people who are hurt and where to put the camera so it will take the best picture still there's emergency room patient what happened to this patient Dave he was jogging and a trip fell an x-ray technician took this picture can you tell what it is fractured his fifth metatarsal and it looks like it's angulated something another kind of technician in a hospital is a lab technician this lab technician is studying a germ that is making many people in her community sick when she finds out what the germ is doctors in the community will know how to help keep others from getting sick white side many Hospital lab technicians also run a blood bank people who are very sick sometimes need extra blood the extra blood comes from healthy people in the community who give it to a hospital you feel okay fine okay you can reach over here and keep pressure on this place a healthy person isn't hurt by giving blood because the nurses and lab technicians know just how much to take the blood is frozen so it can be saved until somebody needs it [Music] people who are in the hospital or just getting out sometimes have weak muscles and bones or need to learn how to use crutches or a wheelchair these Hospital helpers are called physical therapists and are trained to help get muscles and Bones working right again just like this and when you approach the stairs you need to get Just a Little Closer now you're going to push down or take a step up with your good legs there you go to get to the other side you want to get your toe right over the edge like this hey you did it most of us are healthy most of the time but when we are sick we know we can depend on the medical workers in our community to work as a team to give us the best medical care possible whether these people work in a big city or a small town their job is the same to help a community get healthy and stay healthy [Music] a few weeks thank you [Music] uh and I I don't think I I've got something ready uh that's going to fit the time frame but we're just going to go ahead and do this anyway this is another Centron film um this is fire safety is your department enjoy [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] yesterday a beautiful house stood here today after a tragic five that home is only a memory this was once Jimmy's room it used to be his favorite place his own private world now there's not much left Susan remembers her room too you've seen that cute guy [Music] privacy and comfort it once offered she never dreamed her room would one day look like this Jimmy and Susan's parents feel the loss too that cozy family room where everyone gathered to watch TV now is gone along with the rest of the house they work so hard for [Music] yet as the Harveys remember how their home burned they can still be thankful for one thing they all escaped the Flames unhurt fire insurance will help the Harvey's rebuild their house but even so the sorrow of this moment will not be soon forgotten every day this sad story is repeated hundreds of times as helpless families watch their homes and dreams go up in smoke what's worse these needless fires often cause serious injuries even death [Music] thank you [Music] that's why you need to practice fire safety every day let's see what fire safety is all about let's see what you can do to protect your home and yourself from the danger of Fire here's a cause of many household fires careless smoking someone who smokes in bed or when they're sleeping is taking an awful chance a cigarette dropped on a sofa on a mattress and a rug could smolder for hours then suddenly burst into flame and cause a major fire you can't stop others from smoking but you can reduce the risk of Fire by being alert hey wake up your cigarette oh remind adults in your home never to smoke in bed or when they're sleepy good hey who was he Mildred Mildred another way you can practice fire safety is to always use matches properly hold it you forgot something close the cover before striking the match that way you won't accidentally ignite the remaining matches okay when you're through the match make sure it's out before you throw it away to be sure it's out break the match in half the same rule applies when you use matches outside if the match is cool enough to break it won't start the wrong kind of Fire many terrible fires have been started by youngsters playing with matches so store matches in a safe place well out of the reach of children another thing never use a match to search for something in a dark closet there's too great a chance you might set fire to clothing or other combustibles ouch instead use a flashlight it's safer and painless too back at the fireplace there are a couple of safety points you need to remember once the fire is burning keep a screen in front of the fireplace this will prevent Sparks from flying out into the room where they could set rugs or furniture on fire when it's time to remove the ashes carry them in a metal bucket never put ashes in a cardboard or wooden box that could be ignited by hot coals put the ashes in their own metal container with a tight-fitting lid never scatter hot ashes on the ground they could start a grass fire or be blown away to start a blaze elsewhere knowing how to hang with the fresh air the vapors from such liquids are easily ignited so keep well away from any Open Flame or Sparks keep flammable liquids in their original containers and store them in a safe place away from any source of heat now here's a mistake never store gasoline or kerosene in a glass container it could break spill the contents and create a serious fire hazard so always store gasoline and kerosene in properly marked metal cans Rags that have been soaked in paint thinner motor oil or furniture polish are another fire hazard if they're stored improperly like this over a period of time oily Rags can produce enough heat to burst into flame this is called spontaneous ignition and it's a real Danger so store oily rags in a closed metal container that has an air space underneath to get rid of heat there's one kind of flammable material you don't need to store plain old trash an attic or a closet like this is a perfect place for a fire to start protect your home from fire by getting rid of trash rubbish old newspapers junk any unwanted material that could be fuel for a fire another way you can prevent fire is to be careful when you use appliances and electricity a burner left on when not in use is an invitation to disaster especially if little brother is in the mood for a hot dog so turn off any Appliance you're not using here's another Hazard an overloaded electrical outlet too many appliances plugged into the same Outlet can cause electric wires to overheat and start a fire don't make this mistake use fewer appliances at a time and plug them into the wall outlet not a not a socket attachment or an extension cord you can help prevent Fire by practicing the rules of safety let's review them be alert remind grown-ups never to smoke in bed or when they're sleepy use matches safely close the cover or box before striking a match make sure the match is out before you throw it away and keep matches out of the reach of young children use and store flammable materials properly store gasoline kerosene and other flammable liquids in properly marked metal containers away from Heat and use such liquids only in well ventilated areas or preferably out of doors put oily rags in a covered metal container to prevent spontaneous ignition and keep your home free from trash and rubbish also be careful with appliances and electricity turn off or unplug appliances that are not in use and never overload electric Outlets thank you fire sometimes gets out of control in spite of everything we do to prevent it that's why you need to know how to be prepared when fire strikes most Home Fires start at night when you're asleep by the time the fire is discovered you may have only seconds to get out of the house that's why you need to plan your Escape in advance before fire strikes here's how first tour your home and choose two Escape Routes from each room a normal route such as a dog and an emergency room such as a window make sure it's a window you can open easily it's a good idea to make a simple drawing of your bedroom Escape Routes to help you remember you can post a drawing on a wall or on a closet door by the way always sleep with your bedroom door the door can keep smoke and deadly gases from coming into the room and give you more time to escape during a fire test the door before you open it if the door feels hot or if you see smoke coming in at the edges do not use the door use your emergency exit if you think it's safe but you're not sure block the door with your body like this and open it a little if heat and smoke rush in slam the door shut after you've chosen your two exits from each room decide on a way to wake up and warn other members of your family should you discover a fire you can yell fire or pond on the walls or blow a whistle anything to wake everyone up next pick a spot outside where everyone will meet after getting out of the house there you can make sure everyone is safe once you're out of a burning house stay up never go back in you might get trapped inside finally go to the nearest telephone booth or alarm box and call the fire department we'll take over from there don't risk your life trying to fight fires or save possessions that's our department now let's see how these safety measures could save your life should you discover a fire in your home it's the middle of the night and you're awakened by the smell of smoke your first impulse should be to warn others in your family [Music] remember test the door of your first Escape Route if it's safe exit quickly get yourself and everyone else to safety never mind getting dressed just get up but if the door is hot or leaking smoke use your emergency escape [Music] leave your possessions behind [Music] outside go to your agreed upon meeting place and stay there until you're sure everyone is out safely Rick Paul run to the neighbors and get the fire department then call the fire department fire department my name is Paul West and I'd like to report a fire at 1232 South Maple to report any fire give your name and the address where the fire is burning then wait to answer any questions remember if you discover a fire in your home warn others in the house get out fast and leave your possessions behind go to your outside meeting place my name is Paul the fire department yes yes all right but now suppose a fire has you trapped in your room what should you do first of all keep calm Panic won't help stuff rugs or clothing into cracks to keep smoking gases out of the room then open the window and yell for help signaling with a towel or sheep if help is on the way put off jumping as long as possible but if you must jump slide out the window feet push yourself out slightly as you let go and relax as you fall remember jump only as a last resort now here's something that no home should be without a fire extinguisher dry chemical or carbon dioxide extinguishers are best for General household use keep one on each floor of your home and know how to use it and this device is probably even more important than a fire extinguisher it's called a smoke detector it won't put out a fire or prevent one from starting but it will warn you and your family of a fire even if you're sound asleep watch what happens when smoke reaches the detector this kind of alarm system can give you several extra minutes to escape fire that can save your life and the lives of the other members of your family no home should be without this kind of protection your home isn't the only place where you must be alert to the danger of Fire fire occurs in your school leave the building in the same orderly manner that you practice during fire drills walk quickly but avoid running in any other large building always notice where the emergency exits are so you can get out quickly in case of fire yes you can protect your home your possessions and yourself from the danger of fire if you'll practice fire safety every day [Music] remember fighting fire is our department but fire safety is your department [Music] and what may I ask is a dear little cupcake like you're doing with nasty old school books my dear child we haven't had school or books and ages not cool really really why don't you get rid of that you can drop them in here it'll get all found up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but I can't find this book if oh crap apple sugar you just need to get into them the books [Music] I know you'd rather play so why don't you throw on your box away learning [Music] [Music] two parts [Music] books will not make you wise and read he's bad for your eyes so why don't you give all your books to me thank you [Music] boss you can only confuse [Music] will set your mind free [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] [Applause] no stop hey uh thanks everybody for tuning in today we ran long I know but uh there's a lot of great stuff obviously uh and it all tended to be Centron related um even though some of these are in cornet cans um yeah that's some great stuff there and then of course I had to show Jim Stringer um because he narrated uh and then we ended with uh fire safety is your department a brand new fire safety film that we scanned uh that was part of the Cornet collection that we have but for a while uh Cornett actually owns Centron and then Centron bought it back so it's kind of confusing but we had to end with this you you guys
