[Music] owc fields it was an early film and uh there were some a lot of interesting chatter on uh youtube's comments about is this the earliest film that i've shown and so this 1906 i showed those awful hats yesterday that was 1909. um i have some films before this uh that were at least made before this you know remember again 16 millimeter came out in like 23 1923 so everything that's on 16 millimeter that was made in the 1800s 1890s or early 1900s was shot on some sort of 35 or variation on 35 millimeter or some sort of special format before it all got standardized and it got printed to 16. a lot of them got printed by a company called black hawk films which was a a bunch of collectors who kind of teamed up um and re basically took the collect the early silent films that they had that had fallen out of copyright and they put them out on 16 and in some cases like this one they put a new music soundtrack or they put some sort of sound effects on it or something um and so blackhawk got a bunch of films that were from the early 20th century uh in film and made them available to people in the uh 60s 70s 80s 90s etc um so that's what that was that was not originally from 1909 but the film was dubbed in the late 70s so there you go oh i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the av geeks lunchtime streaming show welcome everybody uh there were some other things that people were talking about um in the la in the youtube stream that i'll maybe talk about in a few and that is the push for ai colorization and motion estimation which is increasing the frame rate and sharpening i have experiences with all that technology and i have something to say about it at some point but first i want to really know and i'm sure you want to know what will bernard do [Music] we want to find out how many sevens there are in 238 are there at least 10 bernard um no how many uh seven ten times seven is what bernard 70. all right then there are at least 10 sevens in 238 aren't there all right let's multiply 10 times 7 and put it beneath 238 then we're going to subtract can we take zero from eight i don't know how to do this man well you want me cool and help you with your homework yeah that'd be pretty good maybe i could get a higher grade on it times i don't get that well what's eight times two sixteen eight times three um twenty four eight times four and three two okay is 32 less than 34 yeah okay then eight times four is less than 34. we want to find out how many fours there are in 214 are there at least 10 bernard yes are they 20 yes are there 30 yes good how many packs of beans is three bushels of beans um twelve bushels um 24. if mary and her father picked 32 pecs of beans how many bushel baskets could they fill um eight how many bushels is 36 picks nine very good copy i helped y'all here you gotta help me now oh bernard um so i have other films in that series uh i showed on the friday show the 300th show i showed what would skip do i'm always very excited when there's a old educational film that features my name um and features a character named skip even if that character is a dog um so uh yeah these are all kind of open-ended morality tales where um now we're supposed to sit and discuss what's gonna happen um next and what you would do in that situation etc uh let's see excuse me um oh yeah so real quickly uh so there is software out there that lets you de-oldify film uh there's a wonderful routine artificial intelligence routine called deolify which i have used at length and to try to just to see to try to colorize things and what i have found is it is about 75 percent there what that means is that if you it will pull out faces and make them the right color flags it has no idea what the color the flags are supposed to be clothing doesn't really know what color it's supposed to be and in fact it will change over time um and uh sometimes skin goes from pink to gray uh so um it's not there not there yet um and it's fake it's all fake color it's not real um the topaz sharpening uh upscaling software is interesting uh and i'm actually using another computer right now for something that has a lot of artifacts it was a mpeg 2 file that was compressed pretty hard and so topaz is pretty good at taking out some of that compression but again it it doesn't bring up stuff that's not already there it's kind of using tricks to kind of make us think that it looks sharper um so uh it's not there yet again um so when i see things um when people are like oh this has been restored well one it hasn't been restored it's not film restoration it is a gimmick it is like oh we've we've slowed it down we've uh added extra frames to make it seem smoother we've added color which really wasn't there and it's kind of faking it out and we've sharpened it um yeah it's it yeah there's some problems with it it's not there yet not by a long shot and then i guess i don't know if you saw recently there's this company myheritage which licensed some software that animates photos and sometimes it looks great and sometimes it looks like it's just rubber with a finger behind it moving it around and the eyeballs are going so again like you know it's a gimmick it's very much a gimmick um and it starts getting into uncanny valley when we're like you know what their fate that person's face isn't supposed to move that way and their eyeballs aren't moving the way that we like so not there yet maybe at some point then we can start freaking out a little bit about what is real and what isn't um in the meantime let's watch a raccoon's picnic [Music] once upon a time there were two little raccoons who decided to see how everything around them looked in the daytime you see usually raccoons sleep in the daytime and only come out at night to look for food that's why we don't see raccoons very often when we're in the woods willie and beatrice liked the look of everything very much so they decided to take a walk raccoon's feet are shaped like little hands and they have sharp claws so climbing rocks or trees is easy for them the black and white fur on their faces make them look like they're wearing banded masks and they have rings around their tails well beatrice and willie were so excited about being out in the daytime that they kept getting in each other's way and finally willie fell off the rock ledge beatrice climbed down head first but she had to go right back up again because that's where her brother was [Applause] going but again willie fell and so did beatrice this time they stayed down willie found a pool of water but as he was drinking something jumped out of the pond and frightened him he looked and he looked [Music] and there was a big frog now willie had often seen his mother catch frogs to eat but try as he might he just couldn't catch this one then he heard a noise he and beatrice peaked over a rock and they saw two boys who had come to the lake to swim [Music] [Music] willie and beatrice saw that the boys had left something on the rocks so they decided to see what it was [Music] whatever it was it smelled good and it didn't jump away like the frogs of course it was the boys lunch that they'd found and the sandwiches tasted just fine [Music] sometimes willie could be greedy and although there was an orange right beside him he wanted to have the one his sister had found but how do raccoons eat oranges willie found a bottle of milk and tried to get the top off [Music] willie got the top off and had a good drink but then no more milk came although he could see there was more inside well he just had to give it up anyway beatrice had found a piece of candy and just one taste was all that willy needed he wanted it too [Music] then the two boys saw the raccoons eating their lunch oh oh willie saw the boys coming and they were throwing stones well when willie and beatrice saw how angry the boys were they ran as fast as they could for home perhaps after all raccoons should only come out at night wow um so great uh let's learn about some friction friction [Music] when jane and bobby go for a ride usually little bobby who does the writing well big sister jane does the pulling but jane doesn't mind the runners are smooth and the sled glides easily over the hard well-packed snow well it did glide easily until it reached this bare spot where there isn't any snow have you ever wondered why it is so much easier to pull a sled on snow or ice than it is to drag it over a bare sidewalk or dry ground a simple experiment will help to show us the reason rub a piece of cotton over a mirror it slides easily on the smooth surface doesn't it now rub it over a rough piece of wood the splinters and bumps on the wood catch on the cotton and hold it back it doesn't slide so easily on a rough surface does it if you look closely you'll see that the ground is prettier up too and full of little bumps which hold back the sled and make it hard to pull we say there is a great deal of friction between the ground and the runners of the sled whenever two objects rub together there is always a certain amount of friction which tends to keep the objects from moving the smoother the objects the less friction there is do you think there is much friction between the snow and the sled runners friction because it keeps things from sliding easily makes them wear out for instance the rough surface of the sidewalk rubs against the bottom of your shoes and tears off tiny pieces of leather that is why the soles and heels of your shoes wear out because of friction automobile tires wear out because of friction between the road and the rubber tires knives and scissors become dull pencils need sharpening machines wear out all because of friction we cannot do away with friction entirely but can you think of ways to reduce it one way of course is to make the parts that rub against each other as smooth as possible the moving parts of machinery are made very very smooth in order to reduce friction and have you ever heard people talking about 17 jeweled watches the jewels help to reduce friction you cannot see them by looking at the outside of the watch they are inside at the points where parts rub together jewels such as rubies and sapphires are harder than steel and can be polished to a very fine smoothness watch as having a large number of jewels in them usually last longer than watches made entirely of metal yes smoothness helps a great deal but in most machines ordinary smoothness does not reduce friction enough here is a piece of metal that looks and feels very smooth but if we could examine it under a microscope we would see that the smooth surface is actually covered with thousands of tiny bumps and holes if two pieces of metal like this slide rapidly against each other those tiny bumps still cause some friction how can we reduce the friction even more by putting grease or oil between the two moving parts we can fill up all the little holes now the moving parts are actually sliding on a thin smooth layer of oil instead of rubbing against each other without oil no machine could last very long because friction would wear it out automobiles must be greased and oiled regularly sewing machines must be oiled and your bicycles and roller skates will run more smoothly and will last longer if you oil them regularly have you ever tried to move a barrel if you have you know that it is much easier to roll it than it is to slide it and so another way of reducing friction is to change sliding friction to rolling friction of course that's easy if the object is round like a barrel but suppose the object is square like a box how can we use rolling friction here that's right by putting rollers under it and we can make our work still easier if we change the rollers to wheels the wheel has been called man's most important invention without wheels to reduce friction modern land transportation would be impossible hmm to make wheels roll more easily we use ball bearings to reduce the friction between the wheel and the axle you have seen that by reducing friction we can make things last longer and we can make our work easier but you should also know that friction is very useful too have you ever tried to turn a doorknob with wet soapy hands the soap and water reduce the friction between your hand and the knot now you need more friction to grip the knob hard enough to turn it and so you'll dry your hands in order to increase the friction we increase friction in many other ways too bottle caps are usually made with ridges on them to keep your fingers from slipping the ridges increase the friction between your fingers and the cat automobile tires have rough threads on them to increase the friction between the road and the tires so they'll not skid we use friction as a brake to stop moving objects all brakes work by increasing friction and we use friction and walking without friction you couldn't walk because your shoes would not grip the ground now see if you can answer these questions how does friction help you to write on the blackboard what does this sign have to do with friction [Music] and how is this boy scout making use of friction whoa it just ended sorry i was opening up some windows because it's really nice in raleigh today and uh the film just ended how about that um anyways uh i should say that today we shipped out a bunch of uh prizes for people that won uh participating at the 300th show that we did on friday and so hopefully fingers crossed um they will show up within the facebook saying that the group that i created the bastard film encounter which was a film symposium that we did in raleigh for three years and then it moved to baltimore uh where we celebrated bastard films uh got a uh flagged for violating their profanity policy and so that's what flagged facebook um not all the other content that's loosely floating around on there with little to no uh policing it is that we use the word bastard so there you go uh so anyways i guess that's the what i should say is that um i very much enjoy uh broadcasting on facebook youtube and these other services but it is uh fleeting at some point something's gonna happen uh and i will probably get kicked off of one of those services permanently for whatever reason and it won't be fair and it won't be right uh and so i'm just bracing myself for that and so you know if i feel like it's coming i'll let you know and we'll try to come up with an alternative way this is one of the reasons i broadcast to four different streams at the same time because they get taken off of like when i played a rendezvous that film worth driving a car through france on an early sunday morning um i got taken off of youtube and facebook but it was still going on twitch and twitter now the service i'm using to get onto twitter is periscope and periscope is supposedly supposed to die this month and nobody has come up with like how how can you broadcast to twitter directly and so i might be i might have lost the twitter stream by the end of the month um so just saying i'm gonna keep doing what i'm doing and it might just end up that i'll just be on like some iranian or russian site podcasting and you know i'll caution people not to click on any links or anything on there because it's all going to be malware um but that's just the thing is like i very much appreciate our time together and i'll keep doing this until they uh remove my streaming from my cool dead hands so thank you this is for all you guys so uh this next film is um there's so many comments i can't respond to them but this next film is a film again that we have set up it's called uh tommy susie and the cardboard box this is why we do what we do why i'm constantly fighting the copyright police and doing what i do for films like this so here we go enjoy [Music] tommy is 10. susie is nine and nobody knows the age of this cardboard box there are many different stories you could tell about these people tommy suzy and an interesting thing like a cardboard box decide where they're going what they're doing and why and you'll have made up a story here's one possible story with tommy as the main character [Music] hi ted hi tom oh set the tree yes just a minute here you go all right look one arm climb down on it what's up [Music] hi oh hi tommy what's the box for we're carrying things in it no kidding no kidding carrying something in it yeah what you really want to see yeah you can pick it up if you want i gotta get home my mom wants to back early see you tommy so [Music] imagine in a public place a minute [Music] hi tommy hi susie where are you going library the library i have to look up something what's in the box not what who you mean there's a boy in that box no not a boy this this is alexander wow he's beautiful [Music] i gotta look up something so you watch while i'm gone okay poor alexander closed up in this box all this time this type of snake makes an excellent pet will often follow its owner like a dog [Music] tommy tommy alexander's gone i just turned away for a second [Music] look he must be following me get out there are cookies in the kitchen thanks mrs atwell thanks mom hey look what's your mom gonna say when she finds out you have a snake in the house i'm gonna try and break it to her gently [Applause] i think he's trying to follow me again [Music] susie house like a pet snake [Music] susie is the main character in this story the situation is different but the ingredients tommy suzy and the cardboard box are the same mama never guess what i've got in this great big box she'll imagine it's all sorts of things oh dear now look what i've done it's not broken phew that was close i've got to keep it safe imagine what a surprise that would be a broken bond but i'm not worried i know i can do it you caught it sure let you know help with why maybe i should get him to help okay what you can help me what's your name tom mine's susie what's in the box a vod it's for my mother's birthday it's still okay but we have to be very careful gee i'm lucky imagine if the vods had broken mum says i've got too much imagination but i don't think so it sure was great the way he caught the boss he's really strong probably an athlete i'll bet he could do just about anything [Music] going through the park can be dangerous it can be dangerous sometimes it's actually like going through the jungle [Music] he's brave hey tommy you sure are ready for anything what do you mean well anything that might happen you're ready for it what gonna happen going through a park it's getting windy disagree i don't think so [Applause] [Music] my god [Music] [Music] he saved it again just like superman but that's silly he isn't really superman just looks like him am i imagining things again it's going to hit the box oh he's fantastic gee thanks something must have happened to my remote control it's just a model i guess i have been imagining things again oh well it makes life much more exciting sometimes it's hard to figure out what's real and what's not you sure are strong what pulling this wagon it's nothing i mean well whatever happens you can take care of it i think you really need look i have to go soon i got my paper route where do you live anyhow we go down that away thanks for everything it was nothing he was just great like all my favorite heroes rolled into one [Music] oh well i told myself i'd get that box home safely and i did the cardboard box is the main character in our third story no no no don't oh they never hear me pleading they just throw me away anyhow trash what am i doing on a trash heap i'm a perfectly good cardboard box oh that wasn't nice i don't deserve this oh oh no they're sweeping i'll sneeze and get smaller no i don't want to get smaller [Music] oh any more sweeping and i'll disappear entirely now they've stopped sweeping oh good now if i breathe deeply i can get bigger again back in shape wonder why people do these things to me yes they just don't like cardboard boxes oh well they've left me alone now so i'll settle down for a quiet little snooze [Music] huh what's up oh no not another one hey what do you think you're doing where are you taking me oh no use hoping this one will be nice to me either i'd better do something he thinks i just fit but i'll soon fix that a girl well maybe she'll be nice to me helps no use trying i don't fit anymore hey hey stop that jiggling and wiggling hey it tickles that's not gonna make me smaller you see i told you so huh oh oh not again no no not the trash pile just when i was beginning to like these two just when i thought someone might like me at last that's cold i've got a chill oh dear [Music] i think i've done it yes i have i have i i'm saved saved by my sneezes oh now i don't mind being jiggled not a bit oh oh yes i like these two they're gonna keep me a little boy i'm not so sure little boys like me no don't stop oh i have oh dear now i'm nervous what are they doing oh oh i see they want me to carry him well i've carried bread and books before but not a boy say this is fun and they do like me i i feel as if i really belong to someone at last oh this is great hey this is great i used to think people didn't like me and i didn't like them much either but my it's so much nicer to like people [Music] you've seen three different stories about susie and tommy and the cardboard box tommy used the box as a house for alexander's snake but you could put anything you like in your story maybe your box has gerbils in it or is full of popcorn you may think of many other things to go with the box [Music] you might have the box becoming a puppet theater [Music] or a garage for toy cars all you need is a little imagination and now it's your turn here once again are tommy susie and the cardboard box [Music] um [Music] [Applause] [Music] so canadian yes um it's a wonderful film uh i think that it it uh from my standpoint i used to love a real good cardboard box this is before amazon has now become the bane of depositing cardboard boxes in my life um but yeah as a kid a big cardboard box some magic markers um some scissors uh you know lots of great fun stuff um you know like a big cardboard boxes you can play in and little cardboard boxes for gi joes and for um yeah it uh this film definitely has its finger on the pulse and of course this is 1972 which we've all decided is the year the magic year for uh 70s educational films i would have been six when this film came out so this film would have resonated with me pretty hard um of course i don't remember seeing it i do remember seeing educational films uh in school i was in ohio at the time but i do not uh remember this film
