foreign hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and try to figure out what's going on um this is uh didn't have a title this was raw footage uh shot on Kodachrome of um farm tractor footage uh silent footage of tractors going up and down a field um and I often cite this as an example of why I pretty much tried to put everything online uh because in looking at this footage I was like man there's nothing going on here there's no narrator promotional aspect to this like what's the value of this I bought it for 20 bucks on eBay I'm like well I'm just gonna digitize it and see what's what happens and I put it online and for a while it was getting a lot of attention um and it was generating ad Revenue because people were watching the film all the way through all 20 minutes and it was because there's a bunch of John Deere enthusiasts who uh love looking at early footage of John Deere tractors and this was probably shot in the 70s maybe late 60s um and it was being talked about in all these John Deere uh antique forums and it's phenomenal so um this hike holed up as a reason that sometimes I'll put stuff online it's like wow why why did you put this online this is really boring but not some people will find Value in it and they'll find something in it that they like so there you go uh this film uh I think this was shown at the Seattle World's Fair it's called Harmony enjoy foreign foreign the Indians say that the Earth is our mother she lies spread out and we live on her [Music] thank you hey protects all living things [Music] a little tree fresh air and water since each fish replenish all of us we are in their hands [Music] and then [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you some of this it was made for a World's fair but not the Seattle world's fair but the Osaka World's Fair in 1970 and this was shown in the um I guess the Washington State Pavilion um I didn't know States had Pavilions at World's fairs uh outside the United States but there you go um really kind of fascinating and it was uh widescreen shot on 65 millimeter blown up to 70. uh it was shown on a curved screen in the Pavilion shown 40 times a day uh and the article said the estimated I put I put a link in the comments that um a maximum of 20 000 people could see the film in a day I'm sure it was less than that but it's a lot of people um all right Let's uh let's watch some films about goldfinches uh it is spring here in Raleigh where we're based because there's birds everywhere and there's pollen everywhere so here's goldfish Goldfinch family enjoy [Music] thank you among all the brightly colored birds in North America The Goldfinch is one of the most useful and most admired nearly anyone from Southern Canada to Northern Mexico can see one of these beautiful birds people who have seen a tame Canary call almost any small yellow bird or wild canary actually there are no canaries native to North America this bird for example is a warbler you can tell it's a warbler by the nervous way it hunts for insects in the foliage and by its thin bill in contrast the gold finch like other finches has a thick strong bill for breaking open seeds he's a small bird even shorter than a sparrow in spring and summer the colorful male is Rich yellow with some black and one white wing bar which is sometimes hidden in fall and winter the male looks much like the female she is dog colored with two narrow Wing bars the bars of a young Goldfinch are wider The Goldfinch sings as it flies foreign by its color its wing bars and its songs what does The Goldfinch eat throughout the year some of its food is in wetter sunflower seeds in Spring bits of fresh green leaves buds tend to see dandelion seeds and summer seeds of the goat's beard catnip in Autumn seeds of wild hemp sunflowers Ragweed and thistles the thistle is a weed disliked by Farmers Farmers try to destroy thistles and their seeds here is the farmer's friend at work look at him eat thistle seeds expertly his doubt Bill Clips off a seed see how he cracks open the seed to get at the soft part inside this destruction of harmful thistle seeds alone makes The Goldfinch one of America's most valuable Birds now it's nest building time this is how a female Goldfinch builds her nest of strong plant fibers across a vertical crotch in a tree the fibers are twisted about the branches to keep them from blowing away as she adds material she also shapes the nest for size then she sits in it for long periods of time as if to see if she likes it or to see if dangerous animals or birds are about our Nest like most gold pinch nests is built in late summer after most other birds have raised their families now she makes room for the lining of soft thistle or Willow down and soon it's time for the eggs the number of eggs varies from three to six this Nest is in a thistle it takes 12 to 14 days to hatch the eggs as the female sits on the nest she often calls to the mail here are another gold finches sitting on her nest the male seems to be feeding her he brings food every 40 to 50 minutes Harvard looks She's feeding the same food to her newly hatched Young instead of feeding its young and insect the two at a time like most songbirds do The Goldfinch has a different way the parent Goldfinch crammed its own throat with much food then it pumps it out in small portions into the eager waiting mouth the male usually brings seed materials while his mate supplies dark caterpillars and insects after feeding she usually watches until her young quiet down and go to sleep then she slips away for more food here we gently removed a newly hatched young bird from its nest to watch him grow at three days he's three times as large as when he hatched and has tiny beginnings of feathers at four days the black feather spots are solid streaks at five days the bird is five times the size he was when he hatched feathers showing its wings six days old now the eyes open occasionally seven days and the eyes are more often open young goldfinches stay on the nest for 12 to 14 days after hatching unlike most songbirds those in the same nest may be of different ages when 10 days old many feathers are still inside round sheaves something like soda straw two days later most sheaves have opened so the feathers can spread out now this is the last time they will be fed in the nest now 14 days old they need more strenuous exercise how will they leave the nest will they tumble out and hurt themselves will the parent Birds push them out or carry them away will they boldly fly off these young birds have become benchesome they're beginning to explore the world outside their nests to an amazed male they have flown [Music] even away from home some young birds must be fed for a little while longer food for five goes to two the twelve thirteen 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40. and so in the story of The Goldfinch with its home building and its family life it's a story of color and song and beauty the story of North America's Goldfinch [Music] thank you those of us who work in groups have one thing in common part of our job is problem solving and the more we learn to work as a team the more success we achieve this film will describe a highly useful team approach to problem solving Workshop this Workshop is a laboratory for learning in which participants function both as individuals and as members of a group the approach can be applied to almost any field of endeavor and has advantages for the individual learner as well as for the organization in which he works let's examine this particular Workshop as it was organized by a city school district it was designed to help teachers solve some of their instructional problems this is the district superintendent [Music] or some of our teachers were having teaching problems and wanted help as well as a time and place away from the classroom to work on these problems at a District staff meeting it was suggested that we asked the assistance from a local University the university cooperated by assigning an experienced consultant to help us organize a summer workshop during our first meeting together he helped us form a broad and flexible concept of what such a workshop is and what it could mean to our teachers and our administrative personnel his role was mainly an advisory one he acted as a facilitator and a stimulator as well as a resource person he helped us identify the skills necessary to serve effectively on a workshop staff the consultant brought along another University specialist to assist in the workshop planning after the workshop started she became a co-instructor once the purpose for the workshop had been clearly defined and the members of The District staff had agreed to work together as members of a workshop staff then the university consultant gradually shifted his role and he became for the next few meetings the staff trainer these early meetings were in effect training sessions in which the staff skills necessary for conducting a meaningful Workshop were isolated and deliberately practiced ahead of time these skills included acting as a resource person agenda building assuming chairmanship and interviewing at one staff meeting we decided to work in pairs to practice interviewing this interviewing was the most important step in the workshop process Ford was during the interviews that the applicants were first to learn what they might expect of the workshop and of course what the workshop staff would expect of them under the guidance of Staff members applicants were encouraged to Define carefully exactly the problems on which they wish to work only applicants whose problems could be clearly defined and who were willing to work with others on their solution were encouraged to attend at a later staff meeting projects were reviewed and applicants with similar interests were assigned to work together now you've seen a few of the important preliminary steps which go into the organization of a successful Workshop now let's see the workshop as it actually functioned just before the workshop started we had a party for the staff and participants now this was very important because it gave us all a good chance to meet informally this gave me a chance to welcome the participants and to introduce our staff once the workshop began the participants met in small interest groups and worked with a specialist in their subject area who came from the workshop staff these interest groups accomplished a number of things at times members worked individually searching out required information they also worked with other participants interested in the same kind of problem they reported their progress to the interest group in which they worked asking for suggestions from others or possibly giving help where they could group leaders kept the participants focused on their projects and also suggested many methods of tackling the problems when a participant seemed to be having difficulty the participants worked on their projects in any manner they found suitable they were given ample opportunity to discuss their progress with their group leaders as well as with the university instructors at any point a participant could decide that he had undertaken too big or too small a project and with the aid of the group leader and the university instructor his task was redefined participants were not necessarily expected to turn in a finished project but rather to work toward their stated goals in a realistic fashion they worked on their projects at their own speed using the resources of the workshop to gain perspective now some of these resources were books from the workshop library or perhaps members from other work groups who had special skills to offer other available resources included special materials such as charts films film strips and teaching demonstrations or the group called on special Consultants who worked with them on a special problem for one day or perhaps several participants met with the university instructors at least twice during the workshop usually at the beginning and near the end in the first meeting the university instructors became familiar with the teacher's plan for work and encouraged standards of excellence acceptable to the university for those who were attending the workshop for credit each of the participants kept a daily log which outlined briefly the teacher's Daily Progress This Record was read by the group leaders as well as the university instructors so they might determine what additional help the teachers could use the staff met at the end of each Workshop day now here's a pulse of the workshop could be felt problems and progress were aired in these meetings we assisted each other in meeting day-to-day needs of the groups and we also discussed the progress of individual participants and made plans to help those needing special attention now not all Workshop time was filled with work there was also time for relaxation and the opportunity to find out what people in the other groups were doing informal exchange became a regular part of the workshop day these were the intangible values not Midway during the workshop the tangible results began to appear here is a teacher in the science group who gathers new facts for the teaching of Science in her classroom she accomplished at her own pace the things she came to the workshop to do her materials and facts were later shared with other teachers in the district [Music] now this teacher had time to browse and find new books in her field of interest in the workshop Library foreign who gathered and constructed new teaching aids for her classroom she checked with other teachers in the same grade level to see if these materials would appeal to their youngsters as well she actually tested her ideas and materials with a group of children at the workshop [Music] these teachers learn the art of sharing ideas with one another in a free give and take manner these teachers learn from a well-known educator just how Community agencies and local institutions could enrich their work with children and parents and this teacher gained an understanding of national Trends in education but the peak experience in the workshop comes to those participants who in meeting the challenge of their problem experienced new feelings of adequacy and personal growth [Music] evaluation is a necessary part of a workshop experience in the small interest groups participants had discussed each other's projects informally in the instructor's concluding interview a more formal evaluation was made and a university grade given he also suggested ways the projects could be continued after the workshop was over [Music] sharing has been a keynote to the workshop most of it has taken place in the interest groups and at the coffee hours but as the workshop draws to a close all the participants gather together to describe what they have accomplished and what they gained from the workshop experience interest groups selected a member to represent them at this meeting to describe two or three of the most interesting things the group had done they also showed new teaching materials they had developed these participants gained something Beyond University Credit [Music] s were duplicated for use by the entire District in this way letting the district benefit from the wealth of material which results from each Workshop [Music] foreign society and therefore must find many methods for its people to work together productively in groups and solve their problems and make their creative contributions the workshop is one such method in the end however we think it is the children of our district who will benefit most from the workshop for their teachers bring back to them new and better teaching methods and materials as well as A New Perspective and respect for their profession thank you thank you well that was great so I was on a call during goldfish family and couldn't get off the call I was trying to wind it down but there you go um I think we're gonna watch another black and white film uh this is encyclopedia britannica's development of communication and this one is pretty great I love the there's something very stirring about it and maybe it's the music it's the the edits it's it's really Dynamic and exciting uh so here it is development of communication enjoy from the sluggish plot of feet to the speed of light such is the story of the development of communication for essentially the speed of communication depended upon the speed of Transportation bearers of news toiled across mountains traversed vast open planes treaded their way through Deep Forest tossed upon broad expanses of ocean often they encountered storms observed the lightning in the skies but they could not know that this was one form of energy which would shatter the barriers to human contact the story of worldwide mass communication begins in the later 17th century when Volta in Italy made a discovery of extreme importance he developed the principles of the electric battery batteries make possible a continuous flow of electricity that moves with a speed of light as a second important development Watson in England demonstrated that electric current could be conducted from one place to another using the Earth to complete the circuit in the United States Henry improved an electromagnet so that even a feeble current could produce considerable attracting power on a steel rod and then another American Samuel Morse combined these three inventions the electric battery a conductor made of wire and an electromagnet by pressing a key he started a flow of electricity from the battery through the wires this caused an Impulse to flash to the electromagnet at the receiving end the impulse brought two pieces of metal together and produced a click this is the original model of the world's first Telegraph in 1844 the first public Telegraph message was transmitted over an experimental line between Baltimore and Washington DC here was a method of virtually instantaneous communication the telegram a development of tremendous importance almost overnight no news was farther away than the nearest Telegraph team [Applause] [Music] the exciting drama of the opening of a new continent flowed across Telegraph wires from the farthest outposts to the population centers in the east and as the railroads went farther west the wires of the telegraph followed providing almost instantaneous communication between distant places Only The Ocean remained a barrier in the 1860s a difficult undertaking got underway a submarine cable containing many Telegraph wires was planned between North America and Europe after many months of arduous work and after many breaks in the cable and Fresh Starts Europe and America were finally linked by a continuous Telegraph Wire the cable rested on the floor of the ocean and carried messages flashed by the keys of telegraphers on both sides of the Atlantic but despite all this progress messages could still only be conveyed as code signals then in 1876 an American speech teacher Alexander Graham Bell Came Upon the idea that waves set up in the air by the vocal cords could be transmitted over a considerable distance these waves caused a thin diaphragm to vibrate which in turn caused variations in pressure upon a mass of carbon particles next to the diaphragm these variations in pressure govern the amount of electricity passing through the wire as these electrical variations arrived at the electromagnet in the receiver they caused corresponding vibrations in another thin diaphragm sound waves set up in the receiver were similar to those set up by the voice in the transmitter Bell's first apparatus was crude and weak but it did carry his voice across the wire to a remote place where his helper heard the first sound transmitted mechanically but many improvements were necessary to make the voice not only heard but understood the telephone as we know it today was born from these simple Beginnings with the years shapes and sizes changed but the same principle operates them all carrying human voices wherever wires are strong for both Telegraph and telephone require wires but inventive Minds were already working on methods of communication that would not need wires Marconi of Italy elaborating the discoveries of earlier inventors and scientists brought out in 1896 the first practical system of Wireless electrical communication three that electromagnetic waves which travel with the speed of light can be sent out into space and then picked up at a distance by a receiving apparatus Marconi's first message was picked up at a distance of less than two miles from its point of origin only seven years later Wireless Telegraph messages were being flashed across the Atlantic invention after invention piled up in the field of electric transmission one of the Pioneers lead to Forest brought out a device called the vacuum tube in it a Tungsten filament is charged with negative electricity and the plate with positive electricity as the voltage on the plate increases more electrons are attracted to the plate thus amplifying weak electromagnetic waves vacuum tubes of all sizes soon crowded the nerve centers of communication thanks to the efficiency of the vacuum tube a new voice began to fill our homes the voice of radio this is station KDKA Pittsburgh bringing you a program of news and music the first commercial radio station in Pittsburgh opened a new era of entertainment and education over the Airways transmission towers of all kinds shapes and sizes began to dot the countryside and soon shortwave telephone messages were crossing the ocean to relieve the overcrowded submarine cables carrying human voices over the air was only the beginning hardly had radio established itself the world over when television joined the battle for the airwaves television went into millions of homes now the public not only hears but sees events as they occur entertainment news and education are flashed instantaneously from Studio or location to television screens television transmission towers and cables rapidly spread over the American continent starting from the large populated areas of the East the two coasts were soon locked in an ever-increasing network of cables and Towers but man's inquisitive mind never rests the relatively large vacuum tubes make instruments bulky electronic Engineers set to work to solve the problem of the size of vacuum tubes the answer came in the form of the germanium transistor a new means of controlling electronic impulses with instruments many times smaller than DeForest vacuum tube thus the Pioneers in the development of electric communication toiling through the past Century have given the world a nerve system whose messages travel with a speed of light foreign industrial society the average citizen carries on a large part of his activities by Telegraph or telephone unmeasurable as yet is the full effect Upon Our World of this instantaneous network of communication wire and wireless transmitters tie newspaper offices with points where news originates bringing information by teletype into the newspaper headquarters and carrying pictures by wire photo to the desks of newspaper editors [Music] airplanes carrying radio equipment and air bases equipped with radio and radar increase the safety and efficiency of air transportation radio brings Aid to ships buffeted by stormy seas radio television teletypes and wire photos disseminate important public information quickly to all the people throughout the nation [Music] 's marvelous electrical devices of the past Century have so increased the speed of communication that we now have the means to overcome ignorance and isolation and to transform the pace of the world in thought and inaction from the sluggish plowed of feet to the speed of light [Music] I mean until the end oh yeah so the spread of information um uh defeats ignorance well um I'm not even going to pontificate on this you guys know you know what it's all about um anyways uh uh where is it okay um so we've been Gathering still some songs some Jingles for um the toe tapping tournament uh and I don't know if any of you watched found footage festivals they did their toe tapping tournament they have a lot of like commercial jingles and I don't have any and I'm wondering if that's a bad thing if you think it is uh put it in the comments um what you think you think I should bring in some ad Jingles because I have some advertising stuff um and I have some stuff that I know that would trounce them but I would probably not use those uh try to make it fair I don't know yeah it seems like people are uh I think the commercial Jingles are too simple okay that's great good we're on the same page all right but anyway so here's uh um from the mulligan stew series which is a 4-h's uh TV show about a band of kids who solve mysteries about nutrition um here is it's from the getting all together series uh or uh episode and uh here's a song we call that song is it all around the world or is it a I don't know what you call it somebody called it the live crab song um yeah uh there's lots of options here um I feel like we have some strong candidates and we'll we'll start doing the bracketed tournament and we'll spread it over a couple of Maybe a couple of days a couple of weeks um but yeah uh I I think that we have some strong songs and we don't have to revert to commercials as many of you uh said um because you know we just have so much great stuff uh anyways uh thanks for tuning in today I seemed a little disjointed I'm sure
