foreign holy cow what a way to start a show I was looking for a screwdriver and then I got caught up in something else I'm sorry so sorry I'm skip Alzheimer and I apologize for showing you a silent 16 millimeter film that didn't have a soundtrack uh and then um going to get a screwdriver uh it's it's always uh every day is a challenge at AV Geeks for different reasons uh one of them is trying to re-house a uh cassette that was in a flood um to re-house the reels uh in another shell of a tape that was being thrown away and you notice that they're different sizes so that's what my brain is caught up in instead of being present with you which I should be um we watch old 60 millimeter films here at the AV Geeks 16 millimeter lunch and sometimes we have lunch and sometimes we get distracted uh and so thank you for tuning in and staying with us I'm going to look in the comments and say where's skip at Skip Skip hello skip [Laughter] um here's a film what plants need to grow this is in conjunction with uh spring that's happening and all the pollen that is covering every square inch of the outside and the inner coating of my nasal cavity enjoy [Music] thank you [Music] here is a garden full of strong healthy plants these plants have had all the things they need to grow well do you know the things green plants must have to become as strong and healthy as the plants we see here first of all plants must have water you can give them water with sprinklers or you can water them with the fine spray from a hose but the best way for plants to get water is from the rain rain falls on the leaves and drips off onto the ground the water soaks into the soil and The Roots carry the water to the other parts of the plant you can do an experiment to show how important water is to a plant fill two pots with dry soil and plant seeds in each one now water one pot but leave the other one dry look at the pots each day and water the one labeled wet if it begins to get dry now we shall speed up the moving pictures so we can see the plants grow they do not really grow this fast here we are a week after planting the seeds you can see that only the seeds in moist soil are growing now perhaps you would like to give some water to the seeds in the pot with dry soil what do you suppose will happen try it and find out you might also experiment with some plants that are older such as these tomato plants the plant on the left has been watered every day or two the one on the right has not been watered for nearly a week it has almost stopped growing we shall speed up the pictures again to see in a short time what really takes longer to happen the plant that didn't get any water is beginning to wilt now it looks as though it is dying let's give the wilted plant some water and see what happens there I guess we saved it but if we hadn't watered it for a few days more it would have died another thing green plants need is light the leaves of this nasturtium plant have grown so that they face toward the window now let's turn the pot around and see what happens with our pictures speeded up we can see the leaves turn and grow toward the light plants need light to be strong and healthy you can try this experiment in your classroom or home here is another experiment you can do to show that plants must have light plant an onion bulb in each pot and water them both but cover one of them with something that will keep out the light now one bulb will get light through the glass but the other will be in the dark look at the bulbs a few days later see how strong and green the lighted plant is and how fast it is growing the plant that had no light is yellow and unhealthy looking in this garden plot half of the plants have been shaded now let's remove the slat frame to see the plants that grew in the shade the Shaded plants are very small if we dig up the roots of a shaded potato plant we find only very small potatoes or no potatoes at all here is a potato from a plant that had full sunlight this beet plant grew in the shade this one grew in the sunshine here is a carrot that grew in the shade but this one was not shaded you can see that most green plants must have some sunlight do you know what this man is doing he is spreading fertilizer on his lawn fertilizer improves the growth and color of the grass this man is putting fertilizer around his rose bushes his plants will grow big and strong and he will have many roses on the bushes there are minerals in fertilizer plants need these minerals to make good growth these tomato plants are growing in white sand there are hardly any of the minerals that the plants need even though the plants are watered they grow poorly and may die now let's mix some mineral fertilizer in water and see what it does for one of the plants growing in sand be sure to follow directions carefully because you might give the plants too much fertilizer too much fertilizer May harm the plants now we'll add mineral fertilizer to one of the plants growing in sand but only water to the other one watch them for a week or two and see which plant gets larger and healthier looking perhaps your plants will finally look as different as these do can you tell what fertilizer did for the one plant Farmers often use mineral fertilizers on their fields If plants do not grow well the soil may not have enough of the right kinds of minerals when it rains the fertilizer goes down to The Roots the Roots carry the minerals to other parts of the plant this man is spreading manure on his Fields dead plants and animal waste add many things that plants need for good growth besides water light and minerals plants must have air in each of these tin cans we have a small tomato plant one can has holes punched in it to let in the air extra water can get out through the holes when we water the soil in both cans we can see how water stands in the can with no holes standing water keeps out most of the air the roots of some kinds of plants can grow underwater others cannot a tomato plant soon stops growing when its roots are covered with water and it gets little or no air here are some plant roots growing in a glass faced box there is air in between the bits of soil when we pour on water the spaces in the soil fill up the air goes away Now The Roots stop growing the plants get sick and may die leaves must have air too green leaves in sunshine make food for the plant the leaves get water from the roots with water and air the green leaves make food making food from water and air is the most important and wonderful thing that leaves do one more thing plants need to grow warmth many kinds of plants die in winter but trees and shrubs do not die they only stop growing some of them keep their green leaves all winter we call them Evergreens this spruce tree is an evergreen other trees and shrubs lose their leaves in Autumn they may look dead but tiny new leaves are hidden in the buds when spring comes the buds swell and when it gets warm enough they begin to open by speeding up the moving pictures we can see the new leaves coming from this maple tree bud [Music] the plants that died have left their seeds these sunflower seeds will fall to the ground [Music] now the seeds grow into new plants [Music] when you see plants and raise them yourself remember the things they need water light minerals air and warmth foreign but that will do uh Encyclopedia Britannica uh so uh interesting story slash cautionary tale uh I've been working on this uh 16 millimeter filmography.org site which is I'm trying to list every film that was ever released on 16 millimeter uh and uh I've been going through the catalog of copyright entries as a guide to fill out a lot of this information and I've been using chat GPT to parse out producer names and dates and things like that on it and it's been really useful well I decided the other day I mean we we did a thing earlier this week where I showed a song that was generated by chat G GPT based on a shot list for a film um I also made limericks and a conspiracy theory uh which I've posted on YouTube so you can you can kind of look the titles are very um conspiratorial so um you can find them there uh but anyways I was like huh I wonder since this is kind of tied into like a search engine type of thing and it has read all this data to kind of train the machine learning I wonder if it can actually find information about some of these films and just where I just give a title a year and who made it and so I did this with a Betty Boop cartoon released in 1937 called Zula hula and so it immediately brought back this result and I was like oh this is awesome and this is what it said in this short film Betty Boop is on vacation in Hawaii where she meets a native girl named Zula who teaches her how to hula dance Betty Boop and Zulu then perform a hula dance together which attracts the attention of group of young Sailors who join in on the fun however trouble arises when a jealous sailor tries to sabotage the performance but Betty Boop and Zulu managed to outsmart him and continue their dance the film features catchy music and a vibrant animation typical of Betty Boop cartoons of the era and I was like wow that's amazing it just like listed the whole plot this is like a really amazing tool and it did it like in a couple of seconds um so I found Zula hula online and I was like well I mean it can't be that exact so let me watch it and see what uh what it is and how close it got it is a complete and utter fabrication it is a completely the only thing that got right was the information I fed it which was the title of the cartoon is Zula hula it features Betty Boop and was made in 1937 by Paramount Pictures everything else in that description is completely fabricated uh Betty Boop does not go on vacation to Hawaii she does not meet a native girl named Zula there are no there's no hula dancing there are no Sailors um and I was like oh well maybe I could show this cartoon as an example to you can kind of see no it's incredibly racist the portrayal of the island natives is it's really bad so we're not watching that you can watch it on your own uh Zula hula z-u-l-a hula okay so anyways uh we've been trying to pull uh films that have uh songs in them to see which of these might be uh candidates for uh the toe tapping tournament which I think we're going to start next week um this I've shown two years ago it's uh and it's very choppy at the beginning so don't count that first song uh there's other songs in it but this is a zip code The Swinging six um and obviously America was into folk music at this time so enjoy [Music] it concerns our postal system [Applause] [Music] but now they've got a problem wasn't so long ago that communication was a simple Act but the range of the human voids is limited so man's Ingenuity found ways to bridge distance he invented writing and typographical errors to carry messages across vast distances man developed roads highways Turnpike bunions and a rare assortment of aching limbs yes up until recently communication remained a simple Act what matter if it took two weeks to go from New York to Atlanta over a month to St Louis if the letter from Uncle Ben arrived a day or so later nobody fussed the times were tuned to distance was measured by weeks and months everything was a far time off then slowly the country got up steam Commerce shook off its sea anchor and headed Westward all the width of the continent there was a new idea speed everything was coming up to date and the Kansas Cities and the Portlands Communications became the most vital aspect of our economy the post office became the prime artery of Commerce for a Time the department was perfectly able to keep up if the mail piled high put on another piece of equipment and if that didn't do it here doubled again nearly 80 billion pieces of mail literally the post office stands to be swamped overwhelmed drowned in a sea of man where do we go from here Patchwork piecemeal Solutions based upon obsolete Transportation routes will not work the answer has to be as new as the challenge is new and the post office has the only logical answer zip code mail distribution via the straight line always the shortest distance between two distant points zip code five trailblazing numbers like this one launch every piece of mail with space AIDS now that's easy to say and it sounds just fine but let's put this question right on the line what is the zip code a postal Quirk what does it do how does it work if your lend an ear we'll be glad to explain how the ZIP code eases your postal pain [Music] the first digit tells which part of the nation your letter will find is destination since the country's divided into 10 big sections each with a number to establish Direction before your letter has even departed we've already got it started [Music] the next two digits go hand in hand to a major post office Overland since each big section has town after town we need these numbers to really narrow things down we've got the section we've got the city just two more numbers [Music] these last two digits are really specific they're your local post office number terrific what a system as you can plainly see just five little numbers quick as can be but if you have a question or you have a doubt if you're still not sure what the whole thing's about just always remember zip code defined means City to city in one straight line but don't take it from us don't take it from me try it yourself you'll see it's a better deal than you get from any other post office Department yes zip code is a better deal moving the mail in one straight line straight as an arrow the time before zip help clear up two of the major problems that give the post office Department fits scene the dead letter office have you ever asked yourself this question why do postal clerks get indigestion there are many reasons I won't bother to list them it's all the stamp glue we take into our systems I guess that's as logical as a man could get but that's not the reason for their stomach upset it's from trying to read the American hand illegibly written throughout the land this letter will prove exactly what we said the name of the city simply can't be read Oakdale Oakfield oh cursed Oak Park oak wood Tuscaloosa Tuscaloosa now you've seen if the writing's no good this letter might as well be carved out of wood handwriting is only hard on your eyes just drive this problem on for size I got a letter here for somebody from Springfield Springfield [Music] there's no place I'd rather be I'm from Springfield Pennsylvania and there's been a mistake this letter is apparently for me I'm from Springfield Arizona and I want you to know I've been waiting for those letters a weekend ago [Music] you're angry and you have a right to be there are very many cities identical names Springfield is not the least disease there are 24 Springfield causing postal delays and they're all abbreviated with a two-letter phrase [Music] there's a Springfield R and the Springfield oh Springfield flaw and the Springfield MO a Springfield eel and a Springfield kid a Springfield High and a Springfield [Music] Arizona Arizona okay zip code is bringing the mail explosion under control it is as up-to-date as the computer as timely as the Fantastic zip code scanner electronically reading zip codes and sorting the mail it is a success but to make zip code work you must use it remember only you can put zip in your postal system ladies and gentlemen the Postmaster General of the United States The Honorable Lawrence F O'Brien one way we can measure the success of our ZIP code program is by the number of foreign countries who send us their postal Specialists to study our system and to determine how much of it is adoptable for their own purposes they come because of a simple fact zip code works for the Post Office private citizens to get any zip code numbers you may need including your own just call your local post office [Music] keep it all in your hands you know [Music] [Applause] get extra wild hollyhock [Music] still more wildflowers that sparkle in the desert across the hills upon the mountains and that's the water foreign [Music] thousands of miles from the Holy Land high in the Inyo Canyon of America a gnarled Bristlecone pine tree stays tenaciously alive it was a thousand years old when Moses LED his people out of Egypt sixteen hundred years old when King David wrote the song 2600 years old when Jesus walked in Galilee the venerable trees should live another 2 000 years for his garden God has created flowers that bloom and perish in a week and trees that span all of history is it any Wonder so many people find God in their Garden [Music] good um so that was made by Walter J Klein who had a uh educational film company an advertising company in Charlotte North Carolina and so some of this was probably shot in North Carolina or South Carolina um and what's interesting about it is that uh Klein was Jewish and yet they are speaking from the gospels uh for this but the idea was what he would do is he would shoot or have a proposal for a film he would shop it around to potential sponsors who would pay for the film and then it would be shown on television or be distributed to schools or churches uh and then there'd be this advertising kind of like mention I didn't catch the advertising in that but that's what that is and yes it was not made for kids not made really to kind of fold new Christians into the fold it was more Christians who like plants so specifically um I don't know I I don't want to stereotype but little old ladies and retired people who are maintaining a garden and they're like oh the scripture uh so and somebody actually was so bored by they they invoked Wonder cat I'm not going to show wondercat today I do have more Wonder Cats I don't have them handy but we can bring them out so if you invoke the name Wonder cat uh he will appear in a um puff of uh smoke that smells like sulfur um all right so uh one last little snip this is a snippet uh and I uh I've shown a lot of from the film magnificent major of the song books are for burning but there's other songs in there too and this one is really good this features a very young Tisha Campbell uh and is just phenomenal I don't have a name for this so maybe we can come up with a name for it but here's here's just that all right it's from magnificent major and I consider this a toe tapping tournament candidate you tell me if that's what you think um enjoy I don't want to have to read the book Wizard of Oz stop a movie did you ever think you might have a good time reading it a good time reading you've been hanging around this school too long anyway I should know I have [Music] what am I doing here why do I have to learn all this is [Music] the place [Music] a toe tapping tournament uh candidate let me know uh I think it is but I I'm more interested in what you guys think um and the idea is we'll do a bracketed competition starting next week um and try to figure that out uh I can't believe Nathan you donated ten dollars to have a a day of Wonder cat you know if we did this as a fundraising thing what we would do is we would start off by showing Wonder Cats and then we would take pledges to stop showing Wonder Cats um if we could have a bidding war to see who um who wins who who loves wondercat enough to outbid those that hate wondercat uh or you'll
