foreign hello hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that that looked like uh maybe some home movies somebody shot of a bunch of people water skiing um we show and we digitize actually a lot of home movies here at AV Geeks uh some personal ones uh and some for clients and some for archives and so we've been sharing those whenever we can and then every once while we do a home movie day where we show a bunch of home movies uh let's see what we got here let's watch This Is Not a Home movie This Is atomic rocket test in the South Pacific enjoy with the help of rockets scientists have gone even further and turn nature itself into a gigantic Laboratory in one of the most dramatic experiments ever attempted by man Rockets equipped with small atomic devices were prepared for launching from shipboard in the South Atlantic the atomic devices were to be detonated at an altitude of several hundred miles in order to release a known quantity of electrons into the atmosphere at a predetermined height preparations were complex and extensive to make sure that the launching device would function properly Rockets with dummy payloads were fired Mr method and prepared for launching from the Atlantic Seaboard at the time of the atomic bursts these were the flying laboratory were set up to measure the effect of the bursts at high altitude [Music] late in the day aircraft made last minute checks on atmospheric conditions with far-flung observers and instruments ready and waiting the experiment began that is just a segment we don't know where it came from but uh yeah it's exciting nonetheless and that could have again been somebody much must have taken a longer film and cut it up and then sold that segment on eBay not quite sure but it's oh it's annoying um this is not there we go sorry I had to mute on my other computer uh let's watch uh a film about cattle country brought To Us by Young American films enjoy [Music] the vast spaces of western Canada breed Hardy men like the Indian cowboy in big hat right shirt and worn leather shops like good Ranch Hand Jack of all trades pressed into service for The Rush of work at the spring branding like the Cattlemen counting is heard by the Thousand head and planning his pastures over a hundred thousand acres they are men who pitched their tent on the Rolling Plains who like a free life away from the crowd their days out of doors and their work on horseback the foothill land of the Rockies is the Canadian cattle country south from Calgary and out from the old cow towns of Lethbridge and Madison hat the Prairies are too dry for grain farming but here and through the Cypress Hills the soil and the climate are good for cattle raising streams from the melting snow in the mountains provide watering places and Foothill Springs keep the rivers free from Ice all year round the ground is uneven but between the river coolies and the long valleys stretch the high plateaus covered with a dry Rich Prairie Grass it cures on the ground in the fall making a natural winter feed and here in Winter Warm Winds call Chinooks Blow from the Pacific across the Rockies through the Crow's Nest pass licking the snow from the grass so the herds can forage this country where the Buffalo once roamed in the prairie wall is ideal range for the white band's cattle in the old days cattle used to die by thousands during the hard winter now Cattlemen stack hay near the sheltered Corrals thousands of tons of it a year to carry their animals over the hard season they also choose breeds carefully and call out poor type animals white-faced cattle herefords are most common in the West the modern Ranch Retreats his cattle for warble flies using a pressure sprayer the pests spoil the meat and make holes in the hide they lay their eggs in the hairs of the shanks the larvae eat through the Flesh and out through a hole in the back the herd is sprayed twice in the spring for prevention for healthy cattle get a better grade in the fall market modern ranching is business on a large scale when Sandy Gilchrist counts as cattle one match equals 100 heads and is holding a handful of matches along the Milk River in the spring the white-faced herefords moved to Fresh grazing Land part of the ways through the baron Valley here before the coming of the white man the Cree Indian made his home under the shelter of the Sandstone ridges tens of thousands of years ago glaciers gouged out weird formations called writing Stone and skeletons of dinosaurs remind us that centuries ago the land here was Lush and fertile pasturage for the huge Prehistoric Beasts now how did that youngster get up there where little fella hasn't traveled this way before he's not very old yet [Music] are you all right [Music] now let's see what we can do about this [Music] ah there we are hurry let's catch up with the rest of the Gang trouble again water life hey you better cheer it up fella there's a long way to go yet [Music] the ranges cover a lot of territory and moving the herd from Winter feeding grounds to Summer pastures may take several days pastors must not be overgrazed and the plan for pastoring has probably been well worked out beforehand ranchers figure on about 60 Acres of grazing land per animal so an average large outfit of 5000 head will have a range area of hundreds of thousands of Acres the cattle are separated out of the ranch and old cows and dry cows less desirable cattle are taken out and sent to the Packers the nearby grass is left for winter forage and in summer the herd moves out to the outlying areas of the range in the fall the foreman and the boys cut out the stairs for Market they work hard 11 hours a day in the saddle sometimes many of the steers have been handled only twice in their lives under half wild it takes teamwork five men working together to handle 1400 heads usually the cattle that are going to be sold move to a special beef pasture near the railroad one with good grass and good water supply so the animals will be a top weight on Market Day sometimes instead the cattle moved to feeding lots for several weeks of more concentrated feeding before Market they get a scientific diet of Wheat and barley hay and Pulp every day 60 pounds and every day that's 60 pounds of feed makes two and a half more pounds of steer till each animal is 1300 pounds of finished beef on the hook from the feeding Lots or the ranges on the road to Market cattle have right away down Main Street shipping day at the railway Corrals is a big event Cattlemen come from miles around to ship and collect they have watched the market quotations carefully to see what is the best time to sell first the fat cows and Heifers and the steers young Cattlemen come too for stock talk and fun on their own account the mark of the diamond lazy a Royal Canadian Mounted Police are on hand to check the brand marks the West has always raised cattle I'm beef for Canadian kitchens and cats for the tables of England Alaska Newfoundland and the West Indies is rolling out from the Western Canadian cattle country [Music] just ends wow uh that happens uh so someone in the comments asked a March women's history month I would say that we show stuff all the time but I'm happy to highlight uh films this one I have shown in the past but I think it was some time ago and this basically was made while it was happening so this isn't like a historical look back this is like what was happening at that time uh and this is about women's effort on the home front during World War II uh what they did basically to help in to fill the Gap left by all the men who went to go to Europe and Asia Etc and uh so this is women in the workplace who uh and what's related to that and so I'm not sure I can't remember if this is a call to get women more women aimed at women or is it aimed at people that own factories management who knows but anyways here's women in defense enjoy [Music] [Music] yesterday the pioneer woman helped to win a continent today with the same Spirit of determination and men and women are working to save this way of life working to save the nation from the impact of Total War working to build a sure defense [Music] American women are alert to the dangers which threaten our democracy today women trained in science are testing and observing and working to discover new ways to meet this threat other women skilled and unskilled are asking what can I do to help this film will show what women are doing and what they can do every woman has an important place in the National Defense program in science in industry and in the home [Music] self is vital to National Defense it's most important use is the parachutes and powder bags new substitutes are being perfected in the laboratory to meet the growing demand normal wear is hard on clothes but not so hard as a machine like this and there is a direct relation between an abrasion tester clothing and National Defense durability and economy are important to American consumers called on to make sacrifices in this emergency [Music] [Applause] [Music] defense is more than military equipment and Armed Forces defense is keeping the nation strong and healthy in this important work of Defense our scientists are experimenting with small animals to find out things about vitamins a complete report of their reaction and growth is recorded after they are given experimental food formulas during which they are carefully checked and weighed new and health-giving diets are being developed through this research [Music] modern pioneer a scientist she symbolizes the tremendously important work of women in chemistry in bacteriology in physics in nutrition in medicine in hundreds of hospitals and Laboratories throughout our country men and women who work on the production of our defense weapons must be well nourished good nutrition is not entirely a question of income thousands of women are attending three lectures on how to buy food and prepare meals which are nutritious and economical [Music] women working in industrial plants need costumes which are comfortable and safe around Machinery uniforms which meet these needs have been designed [Music] [Applause] [Music] defense Industries can be done by women today and officials of the defense program are advocating more extensive job training for women and girls these girls already trained in our new defense program are able to turn out small machine parts more women are being trained in mechanical trades to meet the shortage of skilled labor for drilled presses turret lathes Milling machines planers and welding equipment [Music] women are being recruited daily to help make planes for the nation's Air Forces three million women in factories all over the country are making things sowing strong Fabrics sewing control surfaces for our fighter planes in a war in which so many machines and tools and so much metal is required it is strange how much sowing there is women are bringing a natural skill to an important job their efficient contribution is helping us to speed up production of bombers and fighting ships [Music] one parachute takes 65 yards of silk only silk has the lightness and strength essential in making parachutes women who have had special training in the manufacture of this product are the only ones who can be employed in these factories a man's life depends on every parachute so there is no margin for error the Nimble singers of these women are capable of turning out perfect workmanship on unbelievably fast running machines [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] these highly specialized Industries are finding women extraordinarily efficient and are using them more and more in the making of Precision Instruments which are co-essential in war today all of these instruments require ball bearings or roller bearings bearing so precise that experts must use a microscope for assembling this is work in which women Excel giving it constant care and alertness women's hands thousands of them skillful patient and accurate are assembling parts precisely Dimension without which no Obama could fly and without which no mechanized land unit could move [Music] every ship that Glides down the ways must have electrical switches women today are assembling gauging sitting together riveting Drilling and making them this work requires fingers that move with lightning speed every defense worker doing her job well that's the Battle of production and the essence of Defense [Music] [Applause] women are working side by side with men on the assembly lines and in inspection units of munition factories millions of shells are moving off the production lines in our great plants from coast to coast shells the tanks and Naval guns shells for coast and field artillery shells for anti-aircraft defense women are skillful engaging and checking for minute imperfections mass production is important when you realize that a single machine gun can fire 1400 rounds a minute [Music] again we turn to the women who are asking what can I do for defense the American women's voluntary Services provides instruction in many basic skills to over 80 000 women soon the office of Civilian defense will cooperate not only with the awbs but with all other private and public agencies to Aid Volunteers in obtaining the training they want a training indispensable in war valuable in peace the Red Cross today is the culmination of the work of a woman who pioneered under the duress of a war Clara Barton its founder determined that the care of the Wounded should not be left to the unskilled today true to its tradition the American Red Cross volunteers are responding to the needs of War distressed peoples 25 million and more surgical dressings have already been sent to Europe [Music] medical science's newest weapon against death is the blood bank thousands of women today are giving their blood giving the essence of life to save life [Music] our history is full of the inspiration which our Pioneer Women left us as a proud Heritage and again today American women are stirred by that heritage serving their country in the laboratory on defense production lines in the civilian defense services and in the home which is after all the first line of defense women have always been the Guardians of the home and the children the future of our country and they are determined that our democracy shall survive and that our precious freedoms shall be preserved [Music] well pretty great um Catherine Hepburn uh commentary written by Eleanor Roosevelt so uh it's I this is again why I like collecting films and showing them is because they're not historical looked backs but they're actually contemporary they were made for the audience at the time to kind of talk about what the effort the war effort was and how women could participate um and that I think that's valuable because that's a different tone than if we had a film from the 70s that look back to that time period and actually I think I have one called the home front which talks about it um which has its own interests uh in value and in looking back so behind me I have a film scanner and uh I have a film it's kind of shrunk we're gonna see if it's gonna work uh if not we'll bounce back and watch a travel log film so here it is Beethoven in his music fingers crossed here we go enjoy Perhaps it is this personal quality this appealed to the human heart which makes Beethoven's music loved and enjoyed today as it was in his eyes Beethoven was the first to make his music available to all people this was an important contribution it reflected the growth of democratic ideas that came out of the times in which he lived [Music] he was born in 1770 in the city of bone Germany today this is the Church of the minor priors where Beethoven as a boy played the organ as a boy he must have often gazed at the Rhine which blows past the city of bone along the Rhine to the castles of German Nobles looked down on a way of life which had not changed for centuries it was a time when kings and princes still ruled Europe it was the late 18th century [Music] near the town of bone the boy Beethoven often saw the greatest States and palaces of the nobility perhaps he wondered about the great difference between such a princely palace and the little cottage where he was born [Music] the little upper room where Beethoven was born is part of the plain whitewashed Garrett [Music] and yet the family owned a piano Beethoven's father a court singer taught the boy to play [Music] at 10 he was taking lessons on the violin in later years he was to write many compositions for violin and piano including his sonatas the one we're hearing is the violin Sonata number two one of his earliest as a young man he left bone to seek a better living in Vienna there he spent the rest of his life [Music] great composers Haydn master of classic music and Mozart like Mozart's music Beethoven's early Works reflect the classic tradition of balance and design music that is often compared to the form and balance of classic architecture like Mozart 2 Beethoven wrote much of his music for wealthy patrons in the Palace of his Patron and friend Prince lovekovitz Beethoven often performed the music he played was chamber music written for the drawing room in Beethoven's time this might have been a setting for a performance of the Archduke Trio one of his chamber works [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] 's music reflects far more than the classic tradition of the 18th century for this century was also a time of change [Music] across Europe the common people were fighting for democracy they were struggling for new ideals of freedom and Brotherhood these ideals influence Beethoven his third Symphony the Heroica or heroic Symphony reflects the drama of the revolutionary period Beethoven dedicated the symphony to the great French hero Napoleon Bonaparte Who Rose to power out of the revolution Beethoven probably thought that Napoleon would preserve the Liberties of the French people Napoleon became dictator instead Beethoven denounced it people believed that the real hero of the eroica is Beethoven himself what kind of man created such dramatic music he was a man of many moods the letters he wrote to princes and commoners were sometimes strange mixtures of violence and tenderness there are many stories told of his temper he was a man who might in an outburst of Fury hurl something at a servant he was a man who growing totally deaf at the height of his career once confessed in despair I hear nothing nothing and yet although he was death they're poured from his mind a torrent of music [Music] like most composers of this period [Music] is among the first to play his works for the common people he also performed his own compositions for the nobility these included the princes of Imperial Vienna [Music] here was music that caught the glory of the Austrian Empire here was music that reflected the struggles of people under the occupation troops of Napoleon here was music that portrayed the end of Freedom was Gerta the German poet whom Beethoven knew for Egmont a historical play by Goethe Beethoven wrote incidental music the Eggman Overture reflects the heroic story of a champion of freedom his name was count Egmont as a leader of the Dutch people Egmont gave his life in their historic struggle for freedom from Spain this was the kind of theme that appealed to Beethoven and his love of Liberty the music for Egmont is powerful dramatic heroic [Music] [Applause] this is music that is quite different from the formal classic music of earlier times [Music] Beethoven's personality is a part of this romantic music you will ask me he once said where I get my ideas that I cannot tell you with certainty become unsummoned I could seize them with my hands in the open air in the woods while walking in the Silence of the night in the early morning [Music] and these ideas that Beethoven seized he sat down in notes that combined the classic music of form and tradition and the romantic music of emotion and feeling [Music] here in a suburb of Vienna Beethoven probably found inspiration for one of his greatest works the pastoral symphony along this path still called Beethoven's path he walked many times perhaps Gathering those ideas that he said seemed to come unsummoned no mortal can love the country as I do he once said that love he poured into the music of his pastoral symphony foreign [Music] Beethoven wrote nine symphonies in Vienna he continued to compose to the end of his life and always he was the unconquerable genius that genius gave to all people a world of music that they had never known it is music which Blended the traditions of classicism and the moving Spirit of Romanticism I do not fear for my Works Beethoven said and whoever shall understand them he shall be free from all the misery that burdens mankind [Music] foreign powerful inspiring majestic music for all people for all time [Music] well that ran pretty well um in spite of it being super stinky in vinegary I have another film set up the British Commonwealth and its Nations uh let's watch that [Music] all right every year in London a meeting of prime ministers takes place these officials represent independent nations which are members of an organization called the British Commonwealth of Nations [Music] the representatives of the commonwealth countries are an indication of the wide variety of Nations belonging to the organization each representative no matter the size or location of his country has an equal voice in the Affairs of the Commonwealth often called The Heart of the Commonwealth is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by the early 1960s this International partnership included Cyprus Sierra Leone Ghana Nigeria Tanganyika Uganda Pakistan India Salon the Federation of Malaysia Australia New Zealand and in the Western Hemisphere certain islands in the British West Indies and Canada areas controlled by these nations were also included in the Commonwealth so altogether Commonwealth lands covered about one-fourth of the land surface of the Earth and included one-fourth of the world's population to understand this worldwide organization we must know something about the historic and economic foundations perhaps the basic historic Foundation was begun during the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first then English sea captains such as Martin probisher Sir Francis Drake and others explored vast areas and claimed for England many parts of the world they're exploring and seafaring activities reached a climax in 1588. when English Naval forces defeated the great Armada of Spain this Victory established England as a great world sea power soon after this English settlements were established in North America Bermuda and the West Indies and later in Africa Australia and New Zealand English merchants Desiring trade with the newly discovered and settled lands formed trading companies the training companies symbolized by the flags of such organizations as the Hudson's Bay Company and the English East India Company were among the first to develop economic ties between England and far-flung areas the English East India company established in India a number of trading posts or factories between 1600 and 1700. while in Canada Hudson's Bay Company Traders enriched the British economy by exchanging manufactured goods for Furs and other natural wealth so through trade in North America and in Asia historic and economic foundations were being laid for a British Empire an Empire to which after 1800 were added lands in Africa and other parts of the world of great help in establishing European culture in these areas were missionaries who left England to spread Christianity in many parts of the growing Empire this missionary movement was to become another of the historic foundations of the Commonwealth still another historic Foundation especially in India and in Africa was the development of remote areas by Cecil Rhodes and other men known as Empire builders in 1839 the Earl of Durham a British Statesman suggested that certain colonies of the Empire be governed by their own people Lord Durham submitted a report recommending that Great Britain Grant her colony of Canada full responsibility for its own government this report of 1839 laid another of the historic foundations of the Commonwealth the freeing of colonial governments by the parliament of Great Britain thus the colony of Canada became in 1867 the Dominion of Canada a self-governing nation in 1901 Australia achieved Independence followed by New Zealand in 1907. the union of South Africa established its own government in 1909 such new nations although practically independent formed a global community of nations with strong historical and economic ties to Great Britain in 1914 the members of the Commonwealth came to the aid of the mother country in magnificent fashion during the years of the first world war by sending troops supplies and ammunition to Aid the war effort following the War the British Parliament sought to give a legal organization to the Commonwealth and to provide a method not only of entering but also of withdrawing from the organization this was done in the statute of Westminster of 1931 in which the condition of voluntary membership in the British Commonwealth was stated in these words the crown is the symbol of the free association of the members of the British Commonwealth of Nations since the statute of Westminster was issued era long a member of the United Kingdom chose to withdraw from the Commonwealth as did the Union of South Africa on the other hand Ghana and Tanganyika chose to join the Commonwealth as did several nations of Asia including Pakistan and India the Commonwealth is not only a voluntary organization but a flexible one India is a good example of this flexibility in 1950 when India became a self-governing republic the Indian people preferred not to recognize the British crown as their symbol of Commonwealth membership yet many Indian leaders had been educated in English schools much of India's increasing agricultural output was due to English encouragement of mechanized farming and many of India's growing industries were financed by English funds so the people of India elected to remain within the Commonwealth though they do not pay allegiance to the British crown here in India House in London many of India's negotiations with other Commonwealth nations are carried on in London the nerve center of the Commonwealth are also delegations from India's Commonwealth neighbors of Pakistan and Salon in addition there are delegations from Australia and other English-speaking Commonwealth Nations such as the Dominion of Canada holding these nations together are common interests and ties which may be grouped as political social and economic among the economic ties binding the member nations is trade Commonwealth Nations have favorable trade agreements with each other Canada for instance generally produces a surplus of Wheat and other grains much of the Surplus agricultural produce can be traded to commonwealth countries that need grain in addition to foodstuffs Canada is also a chief producer of steel heavy machinery and other durable goods Rich deposits of metal ore and abundant power have made Canada a cheap source of Steel for a less developed Commonwealth Nations Canada also processes certain metal ores such as bauxite natural resources of extensive water power to generate electricity have helped Canada to become one of the leading industrial nations of the Commonwealth another natural resource wood provides paper one of Canada's Chief trade items in return for its goods Canada may import from the Commonwealth nation of Ghana palm oil made from Palm nuts from Nigeria may come cacao for processing into cocoa or chocolate Automobiles and automobile parts may be exported from the United Kingdom to Canada as well as to Australia or New Zealand these nations in turn export Dairy and meat products as well as their world famous wool and mutton behind this flow of trade among Commonwealth Nations is the economic need for fast efficient payment for goods being shipped from Nation to Nation to see how this need is met we again return to London the financial headquarters of the Commonwealth where branch banks of all the Commonwealth nations are located here there is unrestricted exchange of money between the banks of India of Ghana of Canada and other member nations funds of these nations are freely converted in the offices of the bank of England thus Good Ship to one Commonwealth Nation may be paid in the funds of that nation and converted by the bank of England into the funds of the Commonwealth nation which has shipped the goods in this way businessmen of Commonwealth lands are encouraged to meet each other's economic needs the people of the Commonwealth also share political hopes and aspirations these political aspirations are met on the understanding that the government of every member nation is responsible to the people it governs thus a parliamentary government such as Canada's based on that of the United Kingdom is found in all Commonwealth Nations this tradition of parliamentary government whether found in New Zealand Pakistan India or any other of the Commonwealth Nations is an historical heritage among the problems of these governments is meeting the social needs of their peoples these needs are many and varied in some parts of India for example the standard of living is low on the other hand the standard of living in such Commonwealth Nations as the United Kingdom and Canada is much higher to promote Better Living in all Commonwealth lands many Commonwealth governments and private agencies are sponsoring scholarships to Leading institutions such as the Royal College of Surgeons in London under such scholarships and grants students from less developed Commonwealth Nations learn the newest and most modern techniques which they can later apply to the peoples of their own countries raising the standard of Health and Living Through education is a common social goal in all Commonwealth Nations sharing educational facilities in India in Africa in Canada and other Commonwealth Nations is another way these nations work together to meet common social needs just as they work together to meet common political objectives and common economic needs as nations of the Commonwealth entered the 1960s they could look back upon nearly a century of significant history as well as major achievements in political economic and social cooperation thank you I don't know if you noticed the kind of weird kind of that's because the the film has begun to curl and shrink because it's uh has an acetate base and the base is beginning to shrink and stinks like vinegar so that's what we were seeing uh uh we saw a film that talked a little bit about India as far as a British Commonwealth or it used to be a British Commonwealth let's look at India as a destination for Pam Am Airways enjoy [Music] yeah foreign [Music] jet Clipper arrives in an ancient land India unlike any other country on Earth in store for travelers are Unforgettable surprises as modern as the cities may appear there is still a mood of the ages an aura that casts a spell and carries the newcomer over centuries in time for here were well-planned cities with buildings of brick seven thousand years ago in Calcutta Bombay Delhi in cities large and small you sense a Holiness of the Hindus and a sickness of their Homeland where a spirit from the past is creating progress in the present Across the Nation foreign you begin to feel the mysticism you realize you're off the well-trod tourist Trail you're in a unique civilization one of the oldest in the life of man among the largest of all countries in one of the most populated one-seventh of the human race 438 million people thank you you feel the mood in the JAMA Masjid musk in Delhi across a belt of green Lawns is surely one of the noblest buildings in India begun in 1650 by Shah Jahan is a must [Music] tied into the people of India must include a voyage down the Ganges besides using the river for transportation they use it for cleansing the body and spirit foreign humble Believers Ponder the Divinity of the Ganges meditating for hours days years detached from body Nation the world seeking God's greatest gift they simply ask for goodness [Music] the river is also significant to the famed Indie elephant providing a pleasant interlude to a Powerful Beast whose skin is thick but sensitive to the Sun like stepping out of prehistoric times the mammoth Pachyderm is a valuable tool in the hands of diminutive man the elephant's seeming ability to understand is one of the wonders of nature the Placid Indian is deserving of this four-footed tractor and has gained the reward through character and goodness for the secret to training the giant is time patience and kindness [Music] not only in the Timberlands they also help out with the tourist trade with a minimum of spoken commands the driver steers with his feet foreign picture to show the folks back home is a photograph taken from an elephant's back if you don't get rocked to sleep this is a good way to see the sights pull ahead is Amber fort here was the capital of the ore where the Hall of Mirrors and by panels of alabaster with the finest inlay beauty is a part of their way of life expressed in their wood crafts Perfection is a form of goodness and in the Hindu Faith the person who follows goodness in this life will be born again in a more exalted position his products are collector's items across the sea [Applause] all right at The Potter's Wheel we also find the mood of India well expressed deep concern over a mound of clay describes an artist not a mere kratzmann India's arts and crafts have always been a prize abroad with an instinctive feeling for symmetry infinite patience in the background of centuries the Indian produces goods of rare excellence but what part is the elegant sorry play in the character of India besides having widespread popularity with visitors The Versatile sorry originally reflected a reverence for
