foreign all right hi everybody let me mute this uh I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films like silent handheld footage of a crow and a tree that's what that was um not everything we have is brilliant but sometimes that's what you need is just some quiet Crow footage um yeah so we've got lots of films lined up today and we're gonna go ahead and start off with we've seen films on claymation um and play clay now let's learn a little bit more about the craftsmanship in clay uh with Clay decoration enjoy oh Pottery both ancient and modern derives its shape from the simpler the cylinder the cone the sphere and the ovoid these forms have been used for thousands of years with each civilization developing its own variations and its own particular style of surface decoration decoration is used for added visual interest there are many different kinds of decoration one way to group them is according to the materials used the Potter is using the simplest material the clay itself soft's clay can be easily worked by incising by imprinting or by modeling on in modeling on the added clay must be firmly joined to the moist clay surface the clay can be left smooth or imprinted with a tool after the clay is dry the entire surface will be covered with a glaze of The Potter's choice and the piece fired fresh spontaneous effects can be achieved by incising in a soft wet clay of a freshly thrown piece simple textured areas can also be incised with a piece of a comb imprinting with coarse materials such as burlap will produce interesting textures for these textured or modeled surfaces glazes have been chosen which further reveal the surface patterns and make the piece more colorful soft clay can be easily imprinted with an embossing wheel made of fired clay single stamps can also be made of fired clay many original designs can be invented with these simple units but a mechanical and monotonous effects should be avoided sharper tools are needed for carving designs in leather hard clay the stiff clay takes a much cleaner cut than the soft clay and more precise results can be obtained many special cutting tools can be devised for a variety of effects working on and in the clay itself is only one kind of decoration glaze applied to the surface of the clay can be used for another kind of decorating applied to the dry clay the moist glaze can be carved a hard dry coating of glaze can be marked with a ceramic crayon a non-flowing glaze can be trailed on the glaze coating and colored glazes can be stippled sponged or painted on the dry glaze surface glaze painting is usually done with different colors of the same glaze with which the piece is covered for best results with a glaze carving glaze is applied to a green piece and the carving is done while the glaze is still damp to retain the design a non-flowing glaze was used to take the mark of a ceramic crayon the glaze on this plate was mixed with corn syrup this produces a hard crust-like surface and the glaze coating dries and with a non-flowing glaze this texture will not be lost in firing two or more methods are often combined to produce a richer effect glazed trailing is most easily done on a flat or nearly flat surface with a thick bodied glaze a third kind of decoration makes use of a clay slip applied to the clay piece and later covered with a transparent glaze slip is usually applied to a green piece for better adherence it must be applied thickly to withstand the solvent action of the glaze after the clay design has been applied it is covered with a coat of colorless or colored transparent glaze glaze can be applied to the unfired slip painting or if desired the piece can be best fired before glazing clay slip can be trailed on for strong line patterns the consistency of the slip can be varied from a fluid to a pace depending upon the effect desired slip can also be brushed into incised lines this is an old Korean technique called Mishima when the surface is scraped clean the design is clearly revealed one of the most effective uses of slip is a method called is graffito slip is used to cover the entire piece and when it is dry enough to handle the design is scratched through it in the wax resist method the design is first brushed onto a green piece with melted wax or a wax emulsion when the wax is hardened a clay slip is brushed over the entire piece a great variety of effects can be obtained by using different colors in both the clay slip and the glaze in this method the piece must be best fired to burn out the wax before the piece is glazed white clay slip can be colored by the addition of powdered commercially prepared under glazed colors here colored clay slip was used under a transparent glaze these under glazed colors can also be obtained in the form of chalk or paints imagination and courage to try new combinations of effects from these age-old techniques sorry um there were so many like gaps where they were just footage of the guy just kind of doing some impression or doing some something on the clay piece that I got lulled into this sense of like yeah it's still going and there's no music so um no outro music um so sorry about that uh Colorado River let's learn more about that uh Circa 1947 and we have a lot we could probably say about the Colorado River now so here we go Colorado River enjoy [Music] of all the rivers in the world the Colorado is one of the most beautiful and most useful from the southwestern United States depends on the Colorado River for Water and Electric Power the river source is high in the Rocky Mountains fed by the Clear Mountain Springs and melting Snows of Northern Colorado this River drains nearly a quarter of a million square miles of land including parts of seven states for hundreds of miles along its middle course the Colorado Flows In narrow Canyons which It is worn in the surface of the Earth here man has set aside one of the most beautiful parts of the river's course as Grand Canyon National Park a little farther down the river the giant Boulder Dam creates Lake Mead an article Lake 115 miles long the largest Reservoir ever made by man at the start of its long journey to the Pacific the Colorado is a clear Cold Stream that runs swiftly between its Rocky Banks but as it flows along it picks up sand and silt the river loses its clear blue color and becomes muddy in this region the rocky Bank support so little vegetation that only Hardy wild Burrows can survive and without vegetation there is nothing to stop erosion of the soil every rainstorm sweeps even more mud and sand into the river to be carried Downstream this load of sand and mud helps the river to carve its Channel deeper and deeper into the Earth because each sharp edged grain of sand becomes a tiny chisel driven by the river current at the Grand Canyon this is what the river has done after the Colorado has gouged out this tremendous Gorge a mile deep 4 to 20 miles wide and over 200 miles long from a plane High over the canyon we can see the river eating its way into the flat Plateau land of Arizona over a thousand square miles of This Magnificent Canyon area has been set aside by the government of the United States as the Grand Canyon National Park Colorado runs swiftly through the park the racing River and Rocky bottom for many dangerous Rapids suspension bridges built across the Canyon from one steep wall to the other carry the pack trains of sightseers narrow trails along the canyon walls give the tourists a close view of the rushing muddy stream below the Grand Canyon the Colorado flows into Lake Mead the reservoir created by Boulder Dam the level of the river has been raised to form this tremendous Lake between the canyon walls over 115 miles long the lake covers nearly 230 square miles Lake Mead is a popular Recreation Area with excellent facilities for pleasure booting and swimming the lake is also a Fisherman's Paradise yielding black bass and other varieties all the year round but the most important function of Lake Mead is to store great quantities of water by building Boulder Dam man has controlled and made available for use the Colorado's raging current before the dam was built the river alternated between a small stream and winter and vast floods in summer now the Lower River below the dam is completely controlled as the dam keeps the flow constant and nearly uniform Boulder Dam itself is tremendous made of six and one half million tons of concrete and steel the highest dam ever built by man the top of the dam is Broad enough for a four-lane highway above the dam spillways carry the water down to the Lower River while huge intake Towers feed clear silt free water into the PowerHouse below the dam the boulder installation develops more electricity than any other plant in the world over a million horsepower is generated here for distribution throughout the Southwest to More Than 3 million power users below Boulder Dam the Colorado runs South for 155 miles until it reaches Parker Dam source of the water supply for Los Angeles water taken from the river is carried by an aqueduct 250 miles across the desert to Los Angeles both Arizona and California are benefited by Parker Dam Parker power plants send electricity into Arizona and for California Parker Dam stores a much needed supply of good domestic water a large pumping station starts many millions of gallons of water a day on the journey across the desert to Los Angeles along much of the way the water is pumped in giant pipes which run up and downhill through the mountains in the nearly flat desert areas the water flows in open canals finally it reaches the reservoirs of the Los Angeles water system from Parker Dam the Colorado flows South to Imperial Dam the source of irrigation water for the desert farming country of Southern California through the All-American Canal goes river water to irrigate the rich Imperial and Coachella valleys while on the Arizona side The Gila Canal carries water to other farmlands Imperial Dam creates no large Reservoir it is designed to divert water from the river into the irrigation canals one side of the dam is a sluice that lets water go through and on down the river the other side of the dam has roller Gates that control the flow of water into de-silting basins these de-stilting basins are necessary because the river water has picked up a heavy load of sand and silt in its Journey Down from Parker Dam the water is kept in the desilting tanks until the sand and silt has settled to the bottom then good clear water flows into the channel which is the start of the All-American canal this canal runs approximately 100 miles through the desert carrying water to irrigate the fields of Southern California's dry interior the canal gets its name from the fact that it lies wholly in the United States instead of Dipping into Mexico as older canals in the same area have done when the canal reaches Imperial Valley Water is carried to the fields by feeder ditches many fields are completely flooded to prepare them for crops that require a great deal of moisture a system of little dikes directs the flow of Priceless Colorado River water to change a Barren desert into rich and productive farmland Alfalfa is one of the chief crops raised in Imperial Valley and tremendous yields result from the ideal growing conditions of hot sun and plentiful water melons are another crop that thrives in Imperial Valley these cantaloupes are shipped in refrigerator cars to markets all over the United States yet only Cactus and lizards could survive here without the Colorado water large areas of the valley are used in growing flax this is a very valuable crop as its seeds produce oil and its fibers may be used in textiles there are also many acres of sugar beets growing under irrigation without the help of water brought by the irrigation canal none of these crops would grow besides carrying water to Imperial Valley the All-American Canal also feeds another entire irrigation system by way of the Yuma canal this canal carries water to the Yuma irrigation project The Yuma project is an irrigation development which supports many large plantings of citrus fruits at the East End of Imperial Dam are the head works or the Gila canal just as for the All-American Canal on the California side of the river water diverted into the Gila Canal system must have the silt removed in large settling basins then the clear water is carried by the canal for irrigation in the Gila Valley of Arizona below Imperial Dam the Colorado is a sluggish muddy river that flows through desert and irrigated lands in Mexico for 80 miles until it finally empties into the Gulf of California so man has turned the Colorado to his own use the Colorado benefits our Southwest and indirectly the whole United States Boulder Dam prevents the river's destructive floods and provides vast quantities of electric power Dam stores river water to Supply Los Angeles and its neighboring cities Imperial Dam diverts water from the Colorado to irrigate farmlands the size Beauty and usefulness of the Colorado make it one of the Great Rivers of America like I heard the music play and then like raced over to the computer obviously I'm a little uh multitasky today I'm trying to print up some DVD labels um and also trying to play with that chat GPT to do some Ultra menial tasks for AV Geeks and having some success but um yeah anyhow uh behind me I have film scanner and we've got some films set up let's go ahead and learn about uh being a carpenter enjoy [Music] wow Dawn and some one of the things I really look forward to in my work [Music] summer months are when we really move it's when I contract most of my work now I Make It or Break It for the whole year [Music] I feel pretty good about getting the summer job with Ted I'll get a lot of practice using the skills I learned in class during the school year Mike and I start early to take advantage of the long day it's hard work and it's long work we're outside [Music] I guess what got me into the field was the satisfaction of building something from ground up being your own contractor you're in business for yourself you are responsible for everything that happens at each stage you've got to hire the subcontractors the other construction specialist you need for all the jobs you can't do yourself and you've got to work with them to make sure they follow your specifications when you're on your own you've got to know what you're doing in most areas of carpentry from putting up the structure finest finishing work [Music] [Applause] I get real satisfaction when a project gets close to finished where there was once nothing just empty space there's now a room [Music] every stage requires skill and knowledge you have to know your materials and tools inside out because if you don't it's easy to make a mistake on your bidding I've been really lucky to be Ted's assistant he isn't just teaching me a lot about construction skills he's showing me the importance of planning being able to draw a good-looking functional design is okay but you've also got to know how to price right yeah now I need the price on the outlets I have to get solid estimates for materials I buy and tools I rent and for any expert labor I'll have to contract and 17.85. George what do you what are you going to try to do retire on me early for instance on this Den I'm building I've got to get an accurate fix on the electrical needs and the electricians got to tell me how much money and time he thinks it will take to do the job 1785 is a 25 increase since last week you gotta watch these guys that's what I mean by pricing finally I take my estimate and plans to the customer by now we've talked several times and I think I know his needs but a customer isn't always sure exactly what he really wants built you've got to talk it out will it add value to the house well it given the kind of extra space he feels his family wants will the look of the den go with the look of the house I have to be satisfied that I can give him what he wants at the price he wants before I take the job build a reputation for Quality that's the most important thing Ted's taught me I'm learning some of the basics of working with wood in vocational class at my high school I guess I'm lucky I'm getting a pretty thorough education in the fundamentals I don't know if I want to be a carpenter or cabinet maker or mailman I just like working with wood I have to know my math and geometry pretty well to get through Drafting and I have to know how to read a blueprint that's the trick of seeing how a room or building will look on paper it's more than just learning a trade mastering the tools or really annoying the materials it means being a pro just cd5 with the right grade you should use on subfloor Mr reader Gap right always use a rough grade on subfloor but there's no sense in wasting a smoother board where no one's going to see it but there's something else that's more important than that Mike what else should you check out I guess you should check the building code you have to find out what thickness the board has to be the pro would do that Mike's right being a pro is the key phrase you hear around here you see in today's economy you've just got to offer more building methods everywhere getting more sophisticated and people are demanding higher quality but I think guys like Ernie pound here are more than willing to meet the challenge no no no no not too steep of an angle Ernie man doing a door jamb isn't easy you're getting the hang of it Ernie I just want you to be able to Chisel the letter perfect so you can winse through any requirements into a good job all the school training is starting to pay off I really feel I'm getting better at this [Music] the one building this office tower [Music] my chances look good about getting into The Apprentice program at the local competition here after four years as a union Apprentice I'll be a journeyman maybe doing different jobs at sites all over the area one month I might be working on an office building in the city and two months later I could be doing a job in the suburb miles away starting as an apprentice I'll be helping top carpenters in all kinds of jobs learning the little skills of the trade that really make you good maybe I'll be a roof on one job for a few months and in the union or the company I work for will have me doing something else like putting up subform on a new building [Music] or drywall in a new office [Music] or doing finished carpentry in the showroom of a new store in the union program I'll get a lot of different kinds of experience and I'll get to work beside the pros and the other construction trades like operating engineers iron workers [Music] welders bricklayers and stone masons they work in the structural phase and electricians [Music] they work in the mechanical phase to make sure the building is going to function right and lavage and Painters they handle the finishing stage they're the ones who make the buildings look good these are just trains you see on a site real drawbacks sometimes at coffee bake you see the guys taken can last for months if there's a building slot and work on some construction sites can be a little unsteady when the weather's bad especially in winter still you don't go through the hassles of running your own business like contract Carpenters you do a straight job and you get a straight check I like that another thing about being an apprentice is that the union will send me to a vocational school maybe one day a week or so sounds like a lot of time and work doesn't it but who knows I might just end up as a foreman one of these days hi Ernie well miss Sims these are beautiful plans you've drawn up but I think we'll need to make more room for this terrible at the end of the second floor you're right Ernie I'll have the adjustments ready by tomorrow great [Applause] it's a dream maybe but it's sure worth a try Ernie can have that construction work not me man I don't like working Outdoors the pay may be good but the chance of layoffs makes me nervous besides what I want well it's the craft of it all I like to see just how well I can handle a tool and shape that wood exactly I'm happiest when I'm working on something that's going to turn out beautiful [Applause] [Music] [Music] big saws and joiners to smooth out rough board tools you just can't take out to a site I want to work in a mill because you do custom jobs finish carpentry like this kitchen cabinet a builder ordered for a new house he's putting up [Music] or unusual orders like these wooden columns for the front of a courthouse middle workers make a lot of Windows and Doors special items where the work's just got to be exact [Music] of course millwork's got its problems too to slow down in general construction usually means a cut back at the Mills and you're always working in the same place [Music] for me that's okay the kind of work I want [Music] yeah that's good Tony but the runners aren't quite parallel better hand playing it some more get it perfect starch on the Belt Sander foreign any area of carpentry you've got to have the desire to master your tools and your craft and you have to be exact I strive for that exactness and I make my students strive too because once you've been through tough training you can work on just about anything if not as a carpenter then as a Millman or a cabinet maker thank you for the skills you're picking up Mike you'll be able to do just about any kind of job that uses wood yeah I like that idea sometimes I think about all the different places I might end up from building highways to working on ships maybe I'll just want to do small jobs in the country or be part of a big Crew putting up a shopping center [Music] working with fed and using all the things I learned this year in vocational class it's going to be a good summer [Music] thank you [Music] straight up 70s it was wonderful absolutely wonderful and you know nowadays I'm like yeah be a carpenter man learn how to be a carpenter or a plumber or electrician that's that's where the money is right now because there's such a lack of those jobs and there's so much demand at the moment um so there's my advice don't go to film archiving School learn how to become an electrician all right I've got a new film another film here and it's about comments asteroids and satellites maybe I I have to check the title uh enjoy foreign years ago the sun its planets and their moons formed out of a great condensing cloud of dust and gas but not all the material In This Cloud was used up in these formations what was left formed the minor members of our solar system [Music] thank you Comet shine mainly because the Sun causes gases they contain to glow like a fluorescent light air causes the glow of meteors as meteoroids plunge into our atmosphere from space [Music] asteroids Shine from light reflected from the Sun light however it is produced can give us information astronomers use telescopes to gather the light reflected or produced by comets meteors and asteroids to get information about their composition astronomers use a spectroscope that spreads this light into a spectrum of colors astronomers can also use radio telescopes to study meteors radar waves broadcast toward meteors bounce off them these Echoes can be recorded as photographs for study probes have been sent on Journeys into deep space to return information about the size composition and movement of the minor members of our solar system asteroids are planet-like bodies and have often been called planetoids for that reason they follow generally circular orbits around the Sun like the planets in a wide region that lies between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter the asteroid belt only about three thousand have been charted and named all are relatively small only one asteroid is barely visible to the naked eye the rest require telescopes for us to see when a telescope is used to photograph the asteroids Clockwork moves the telescope to follow the background Stars across the sky when the films exposed for several hours the stars produce bright round images but the asteroids moving in their orbits produce elongated images called Trails this is the Trail of the asteroid arrows arrows sometimes comes within 15 million miles of Earth not far as Cosmic distances go asteroids tend to collect in groups called families probably because of the gravitational influence of Jupiter Jupiter's strong gravity may also be the reason for many asteroids rather than a single planet between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter as all the other planets were forming Jupiter's Great Mass could have Disturbed the orbits of the asteroids instead of coming together to form a single planet they spread out and maintain their independent orbits perhaps several bodies the size of the largest of the asteroids formed originally but in the course of thousands of millions of years collisions produced many smaller fragments from such a series of collisions thousands of small asteroids that exist today may have been formed foreign these bits of asteroidal debris may also be responsible for another kind of interplanetary Wanderers that we sometimes see flashing above us in the night sky these are the meteors although they're often called shooting stars they're of course not stars at all most often meteors are caused by tiny particles not much larger than grains of sand these meteoroids Blaze into hot luminous gas most of the tiny meteoroids that become meteors are destroyed in their fiery collision with the Earth's atmosphere but occasionally when a meteoroid is large it will not be totally consumed by friction and it will reach the ground then it is called a meteorite the fall of large meteorites can produce craters this meteor crater in Arizona is more than a kilometer wide it's rare to find meteoric craters on the Earth erosion from wind and water wears them down most craters on the moon were formed in the same way but have remained with little change because there is no atmosphere as there is on Earth only a few large meteorites survived the fall to Earth each year they usually find their ways into museums most are of just three types there are Stony meteorites these are pretty much like ordinary rocks metallic or iron meteorites are mainly composed of iron and nickel and a few meteorites are a combination of the Rocky and metallic types there is one rare kind of meteorite that contains compounds of carbon [Music] most examples of this kind of meteorite have been found in The Frigid regions of Antarctica [Music] these carbonaceous contracts as they're called fall all over the world but quickly disintegrate when they land on the ground but those that have come to Earth here in the Antarctic become buried in the snow and ice and remain preserved for hundreds and thousands of years movement of Antarctic Ice eventually brings the meteorites toward the surface and as top ice evaporates meteorites are left behind black against the Antarctic whiteness easy to be found by interested scientists carbonaceous chondrites are unusual in that they contain organic substances carbon compounds that are found in living things these meteorites raise questions about the origin of life in the universe and whether there is life beyond Earth very few meteoroids actually reach the surface of the Earth most are destroyed as they plunge into the Earth's blanket of air 100 million enter our atmosphere each day such micrometeorites that can pit space vehicles have been collected on the paddle arms of devices like this one [Music] in Space the capsule opens exposing its paddle arms to the micrometeorites covered on Earth the capsules have brought back evidence that the Earth is surrounded by a vast cloud of these tiny particles [Music] periodically the Earth's orbit carries it through thick swarms of meteoroids resulting in meteor showers this with perhaps a little exaggeration records a spectacular shower that took place in 1833 the explanation for meteor showers that recur yearly or in longer periods can be found in a third type of Wanderer between the planets comets a comet is composed of an enormous spherical head of gas and dust that is usually many thousands of miles in diameter streaming out from the head is an immense tale often millions of miles long the source of a comet's tail is material in its head within the large head is a much smaller sharply outlined nucleus the nucleus is a mass of Frozen gases and meteoric material a few miles in diameter as the comet approaches the sun it is heated by sunlight this heating thaws the solidified gases near the surface of the nucleus and also releases some of the meteoric material the gases absorb energy from the sunlight and glow pushed away from the nucleus By the Light pressure and the electrified particles from the Sun that we call the solar wind the continuing flow of dust and gases forms the long tail of the comet the tail would gradually be lost as the comet moves away from the heat of the Sun and material stops flowing from the nucleus some comets travel around the Sun in periods of less than 100 years While others come past only once in thousands of years and where do they come from perhaps from a vast Storehouse of comets at the very fringes of the solar system matter left over from its formation a cloud of comets may be forty thousand times as far from the Sun as Earth is but dislodged by gravitational interactions from passing Stars an occasional Comet may be nudged out of this cloud and begin a long slow fall toward the Sun Halley's Comet is one of the best known it makes an orbit around the sun about once every 76 years Halley's Comet moves through the solar system in a direction opposite the direction in which the planets move its orbit like those of most comets takes it far out of the narrow region of space the planets travel through the commas elliptical orbit carries it from a distance farther out than Neptune 30 times as far from the Sun as Earth is to a point in space within the orbit of Venus hallease was the first comet whose return was predicted although its appearance had been recorded many times throughout history when it passed Earth in 1910 its tail grew to be more than 100 million miles long [Music] Halley's Comet returned to the vicinity of Earth in 1985. after it had rounded the sun in March of 1986. five space probes rendezvous with the comet carrying instruments to electronically observe its nucleus measure its size and electromagnetic properties sample its dust and gases [Music] this computer enhanced photo taken by a camera on one of the probes shows in a regularly shaped nucleus a large lump with a smaller lump attached it is about 14 by 7 kilometers in size some 10 miles long and 5 miles wide the surface of the nucleus is rough covered with craters the nucleus rotates once in about two days probes found the clouds of dust surround the nucleus and it's covered with a thin layer of an intensely black substance there is a strong outflow of dust particles from it in the form of narrow jets these particles seem similar in composition to the carbonaceous chondrite meteorites found in the Antarctic the contact between the probes and Halley's Comet was brief Halley's Comet will not return until the year 2061.
